How can I physically create a species that can see/detect all light wavelengths? I'm very willing to handwave why evolution would do such a thing. The important reason would be these species are seen as supers or godlike sorts. The only thing is that the species needs be is look fairly humanoid and around our height and the main eyes look fairly like human ones do.
Tex: If you’re handwaving evolution, then use technology. This wouldn’t be inherently part of a species, since it wouldn’t be something that could be reproduced in children's naturally, but if others are ignorant as to the exact technologies being used by that species, that could easily come across as something superpowered or godlike.
Feral: I wonder what you mean by “all light wavelengths.” The electromagnetic spectrum is quite vast with wavelengths ranging from “smaller than an atomic nucleus” to thousands of kilometers in length. In physics, microwaves, radio waves, and gamma rays are all considered light, but seeing that range would make for some very weird eyes and a very crowded visual world. You use the phrase “see/detect,” and I would definitely say that “detect” would be a better idea and broaden the scope of how someone might detect, physically sense, the full spectrum. For example, humans can in fact detect infrared light through touch sensation as radiant heat. This is why incandescent light sources (fire, tungsten-filament bulbs, etc) create “heat.”

My entry for @catmask 's and @frogcroaks ' contest, Monster Mayhem!
I chose the theme Wisteria Will-O-Wisp for flower symbolism and will-o'-the-wisp folklore. Also because of the color purple ← My favourite color 💜
Thank you for hosting this contest where I can try out monster designing and good luck to the other participants. Peace and love on planet Earth!
#monster mayhem#monster design#creature design#character design#monster#creature#will o' the wisp#digital art#original art#digital artist#artists on tumblr#IT'S DONE!!! Completed two days before the deadline... 🥲#I was rotting away from concepting this it was shockingly haaaard#Until I got inspired by an old monster sketch in my highschool sketchbook lol#Anyways I don't usually do monster designs (I mostly prefer character designing; usually humanoids)#And I *know* I could just design a humanoid monster but...#...I can't resist designing a cool monster honestly#I'm using Tumblr to submit this because I'm not used to Google Drive#And I feel I will fuck up using that so... Where do human skin colour or racial traits come from in sci-fi worlds that don't take place on earth especially completely fictional universes? Especially if I want to do lots of deep history and there's quite a lot of things I want to do with very old historical stuff so people are looking into history 40000 years or several million years ago. Obviously people will evolve and there's a whole lot to take in, not just culture. But that also means I need to describe the appearance of these people - and that's going to evolve in their own way. I'm not sure how to approach this?
Mod Note: We’ve covered this twice from a repeat asker:
1) https://scriptaworld.wordpress.com/2024/04/01/submitted-via-google-form-where-do-various-human-races-come-from-when-building-a-sci-fi-story/
2) https://scriptaworld.wordpress.com/2024/08/11/submitted-via-google-form-follow-up-sci-fi-races/
Tex: Sci-fi worlds presume that they are artificially-created, ergo, from the mind of another worldbuilder. All of our fictional literature in the genre is completely made-up, and bears only variable degrees of resemblance to reality according to an author’s or other creator’s wishes. This can often - and has often, to this day - include(-ed) biases such as racism, sexism, and classism.
An ideal approach is to talk to people of different ethnicities and see what they think of modern and contemporary depictions of themselves in media, and what they would like to see of themselves in media. This method allows others to take in a variety of perspectives, and the ability to critically think about their own biases on many subjects. I would examine which cultures you’re building off of, and see how to interact with people from those cultures.
Licorice: A very Earth-bound assumption is being made here, namely that when people are historically organised into distinct cultural and linguistic groups, each with its own unique history, they will physically look different from one another as well. There is no reason why it has to be this way on a fictional planet. The author can choose for physical appearance (skin colour, hair texture, eye colour, facial features, etc…) to simply not be a factor in ethnicity. If it is essential to the story for characters to recognise each other’s ethnicity at a glance, this can be done through clothing, hairstyles, tattoos, body modifications and so on.

Search engine comparision
Google: Three ads before the first actual result, which is not a helpful one. The following results also aren't helpful.
Bing: There are four ads, each so large that you have to scroll down to see the actual results (none of which are helpful).
DuckDuckGo: Two ads before the actual results. As usual, the actual results are the opposite of what I searched for.
Ecosia: No ads, but no helpful results. However, about 0.02 trees were planted as a result of my search.
Conclusion: It is impossible to find answers to difficult questions simply by using a search engine. However, out of the search engines surveyed, Ecosia had the fewest ads and most trees planted.

Should I write/finish six poems by the end of the month (so ten days) to submit and try to get published in an online journal. I will make $10 if I do LOL
#but it would be really cool to be published#I’m published but only as a journalist#so news articles are all that come up when you Google me#which. I do not like 👎#I’ve been looking into a lot of literature and poetry magazines lately… I have a ton saved that I’ll submit to Someday…..#anyway the due date for this one is the end of the month#and they accept up to six pieces at a time soooo#might as well increase my chances by submitting six :3#most other magazines pay WAY better but this one has a cool theme so 😁#ellyposting
