I was originally only going to comment in the tags, but as I was typing them, it occurred to me to look for ASL workbooks - and I found what looks to be a fantastic website for learning ASL that is 100% free!
The best time to learn sign language would be as soon as you're old enough to comprehend it. The second best time is now. If you ever plan on having or working with kids, or even if you already have kids, this could be a great resource!
Quick fun fact I learned in ASL class:
Babies can begin signing as early as a few months old. You don’t have to wait until they’re 9-12 months to start communicating verbally; the parts of the brain that process and use language develop before a baby is able to speak intelligibly with their mouth. Teaching your kid sign language early means that they can communicate effectively months ahead of schedule, when compared to peers that only speak a spoken language.
Additional fun fact: this jumpstart in language is thought to be a possible way to avoid the “Terrible Twos”; that phase of a toddler’s life is thought to be largely due to a toddler being unable to effectively communicate their needs. If a two year old has already been speaking for a year and a half, they’re far more able to communicate to you what’s wrong. Heck, they might also start reading earlier; languages with a fingerspelling component, like ASL, mean that any speaker needs to be able to spell unfamiliar words and ask about them. This can jumpstart a toddler’s ability to recognize letters as components of a word, and teach them to spell, read, and eventually write these letters to communicate.
Which, of course, lends absolutely zero credence to the theory that ASL will inherently stunt someone’s spoken language skills. If anything, sign language fluency makes acquiring any language, spoken or not, easier rather than harder.
#first of all this is incredible#second of all THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN SAYING FOLKS#we should be teaching litcherally everyone sign language from day one#you get all the benefits of being bilingual#plus the benefits of being able to communicate without having to hear/speak#like being able to communicate in high-volume environments. or silently. or UNDERWATER#and communicating in a comfortable way with D/deaf people. HOH people. mute people. nonverbal autistic people. BABIES#AVOIDING THE TERRIBLE TWOS#WE SHOULD ALL BE LEARNING SIGN LANGUAGE#for real schools should teach sign language and english at the same time#...and this is where the epiphany happened#obviously this really only works for people who can actually use ASL#like. americans. and canadians i think#but yeah just my thoughts#byrd chirps

Ok SO
Canonically his dad is a cop and there are a couple jokes about his parents not loving him, dudes dad straight up said "actually, do we love you?" Like sir damn anyways im taking that and running with it SO
Giving him a fucked up situation of him and his dad always butting heads and both of them escalating things constantly, and as he got older the ends to the arguments went from getting grounded or punished to getting kicked out or Duncan just leaving, probably escalating to his dad kicking him out semi regularly and eventually his mom or dad telling him to come back home to make a kinda fucked up cycle
And like i know they gave the convict kid a cop dad for the laugh like its not that deep at ALL
but like that sets up sucha fucked power dynamic and i want to use that
and we never find out what got Duncan sent to juvie for the first time, its said off screen while some characters are spilling embarrassing or dark secrets and in my fucked up world either he accumulated a couple charges while he was kicked out, indirectly the fault of his dad
or worse but more tempting
he got kicked out and his dad arrested him for trespassing
so like idk i just love the idea of a pyromaniac, vandal convict who has no respect for authority or mutual trust having the tragic backstory that his first time getting arrested was at the hands of his father
#daddy issues deluxe edition#duncan angst post complete#Duncan doesn't know how to de-escalate and needs to get the last word#he gets that from his dad btw#so running away is almost like winning#idk how Canadian cops are so im using american cop mentality#which is typically the “shoot first ask questions later” mentality#i think despite his Dad caring about him hed do hurtful shit and only regret it later#and i sincerely doubt they'd talk about it#so it just drives a deeper wedge and makes whats “normal” that more intense#:D#i love taking things too seriously i love overthinking behavior#duncan total drama#jester jabbers#headcannon#angst#total drama#idk man

every day I am shocked the Midwest accent is real
#I just didn't KNOW that many people who had noticeable midwest accents until I like. moved here.#though my grandmother was originally from minnesota before that side of the family moved to washington when she was small#and you could occasionally hear it in certain words#(one of many scandinavian-american families that went 'this weather sucks' and moved from the midwest to the west coast)#I have a pnw accent which is one of the lesser-known regional american accents#I don't know if it's still very strong but at one point it was noticeable enough that people kept commenting on it#in a 'what the fuck is that' kind of way because most people don't know the pnw accent exists#but I also confuse people because I lived in the South for so long#I don't have a southern accent but I do have some dialect quirks that have been picked up over the years#the people who have been most confused about my accent have been canadians from bc lol#the bc accent is very very close to a washington accent but not identical#then I said 'y'all' and they gave up and went 'where...are you from. what is that.'#(this is a true story)#I also now say parking deck which I *think* is a georgia thing? or that part of the south anyway#I never heard it before I moved to atlanta#your girl

Canada Day
Darius, standing in the smoldering remains of the Crow & Hammer: So, what have we learned?

Darius: And what did we learn last year?
Aaron, sighing: The same thing.

i don’t know much about mcgroarty but i do know that i love his fake sounding name
98% of what i know about rutger is that he's an american umich boy and although many of you seem to be very invested in umich i must admit i don't care. this is fine though
ANYWAY rutger mcgroarty IS a top tier American Hockey Player Name. many American Hockey Players have exceedingly fucking fake sounding names and this amuses me greatly
#asks#i think american ones specifically because hockey is WAY more niche in the us vs canada#so an average canadian hockey player (while definitely upper middle class) is solidly a normie b/c of just the cultural ubiquity#like any given Friends' Brother is a semi-serious hockey player#meanwhile in the us it's /generally/ a slightly more wealthy group who is also /generally/ more likely to name their kids something Diffren#either that or they're from michigan/minnesota (same Normie category)#(this is all my limited observation + conjecture)

i was talking about this to a friend the other day but something i see ppl say often that really really pisses me off, is when people start hating on america, but it becomes clear they’re hating not on the state of america, but on the american people- and theyll say something to sort of like. exclude. american ethnic groups, as like a way of being like “yeahh fuck all americans they should all die IM NOT RACIST THOUGH!” except they do that by being like “yeah and there were american ethnic groups like natives and creoles and whatever…uhh but yk those americans. They killed all of them. So they’re not around anymore ergo not included.”
i just hate that. Like if you want to say you hate a whole population of people you have to acknowledge that you’re hating a whole population of people, you cant back out when it starts sounding really racist because by doing that you’re just sort of saying we are either extinct, or our whole continued existence on this land is null. Like either say you hate all americans and include us, or if that doesn’t sound right, then don’t say it at all!
#personal#Its me member of a marginalized american ethnic group#Creole/cajun existence and native existence shouldnt only exist as an afterthought to stop u from sounding like a piece of shit lol#Also when ppl refuse to say “white americans” but add that disclaimer it sounds a little bit like they’re including#Non native non white americans#And I don’t think i like that#Also like. You can hate a country without hating the people#I hate england I dont hate british people#I hate canada and spain and australia and france#I dont hate canadians or spaniards or australians or french people#Like when you start going on about hating specifically the people it is really impossible not to get racist about it

also a lot of people seem to think i’m from boston because of my accent. i have had like multiple actual americans confirm to me that i don’t sound even remotely like i’m from boston but canadians are often extremely and inexplicably certain about this.
#a bizarrely frequent assumption seems to be that i am not canadian#not in a racist way although sometimes that too#like people often think im american or british

I've gotten really into French-Canadian music in the past year or so. I've probably posted about this song before – it's one of my favorite songs about America ever written.
The original lyrics are of course much better than my attempt at a translation. But for what it's worth, I've done my best to put it into English, because I think this song deserves a wider audience.
America Crying
Another day, I’m up with the sun Bags under my eyes from my four hours of sleep I take a couple drags on a cig, got my vitamins Then chug a dishwater coffee to pep me up
I take the Florida Turnpike Tomorrow night I’ll be back in Montmagny, Quebec Being a trucker ain’t exactly the rock-star life But you get to see a lot of the country
Most of all, it makes you realize that behind the beautiful scenery There’s a lot of inequality and faces lined with pain
And I keep asking myself: In the midst of all this hypocrisy How do all these people manage to still believe in life? It’s so sad that, sometimes, when I get back home As I’m parking my old truck I see all of America crying in my rear-view mirror
In the back of my trailer, I’m hauling all the excesses of my era Frozen over-abundance, injected, plastic-wrapped Our good intentions fail and fade We stuff ourselves on carelessness While at the bottoms of these containers, the surplus rots away
And I keep asking myself: What will our children do When there’s nothing left but ruin and hunger? It’s so sad that, sometimes, when I get back home As I’m parking my old truck I see all of America crying in my rear-view mirror
On Interstate 95, dreams go up in smoke A car in flames on an off-ramp – a fatal accident And stuck in this traffic jam, there’s no respect for death Everyone is leaning on their horns, in such a rush to get nowhere
And I keep asking myself: Where are all these people going? So many cars everywhere, the world has gone crazy It’s so sad that, sometimes, when I get back home As I’m parking my old truck I see all of America crying in my rear-view mirror
Another highway truck stop – I pull off to grab some junk food I must admit the “soup du jour” ain’t made with much love anymore Chain-store service has killed off human warmth On the TV, another sicko has just gone on a shooting spree
And I keep asking myself: How do these poor people manage To go their whole lives without love? It’s so sad that, sometimes, when I get back home As I’m parking my old truck I see all of America crying in my rear-view mirror
But I’m not exempt from all this, either When I’m driving alone at night Sometimes I wonder what on earth I’m doing Out here in the middle of nowhere I think of all the moments I’ve missed out on With Mimi and our two girls And I get this fucked-up feeling Of being a stranger in my own family
And I keep asking myself: Why the hell do I work so much? Far away from the ones I love All this just to “play the game”? It’s so sad that, sometimes, when I’m far away from home Sitting in my old truck I feel all of America crying Somewhere deep in my heart
#music#translations#french canadian music#american culture#les cowboys fringants#lyrics#musicblogging#french translation#i also gotta tag this for my own reference:#us politics#us election#current events#because this song has taken on a whole new level of meaning for me this week#it's very poignant to see ourselves viewed through the eyes of our neighbors to the north#whose take on us is - i think - often more perceptive than anyone else's#a lyric like this makes me feel so painfully seen and known#that it somehow both hurts and comforts me at the same time#cosmo gyres#Youtube

I really really need to stop reading things that I know will make me angry, but I guess on some level I must enjoy hating my fellow people
#surely the comments on this r/canada post about refugees fleeing trump's deportations into canada will not be awful#'we need to close the border to keep out the illegals. build a wall and make trump pay for it. also deport international students'#like i genuinely expected that and i still looked so this is on me#but i do think canadians are worse than americans when it comes to anti-immigrant sentiment
