lots of common reactions i get as a mute person

all the following are peoples reaction when they assume i am deaf, the most common assumption

- flustered and lifts hands to try and sign and then lowers them when they realize they dont know ASL

- flustered and starts to sputter and talk before settling on mouthing things at me

- mouths “can you lip read”

- talks really loud at me (which wouldnt do much if i was deaf so idk)

- goes to find something to write on

- sometimes if i type on my phone in my notes when i need to say something other than yes or no people will go to literally take my phone from me to type back instead of literally anything else

- signs some of the more common sign, i get thank you a lot (especially in customer service situations, which is where most of these happen)

- if it is someone on the street saying something and they assume im deaf when i sign at them they usually just disregard me which is actually really nice

these next ones are when people dont assume im deaf, which is rarer

- talks to me normal

- talks to me like im dumb

heres a few nice incidents

- guy asked me if i was mute in spanish and i nodded and he asked if i knew spanish and i was like not really lol (live in a heavily hispanic area so i picked up on enough to understand) and he switches to english and shares about a talk he had gone to recently about mutism

- girl working at sonic assumed i was deaf and ran inside just to grab her phone to help me which i thought was really sweet so i just didnt correct her

- just today i was using the self checkout at a gas station and the guy behind the register sees me getting frustrated with the card reader and slides over a piece of receipt paper that says “tap works better” and i am like “i dont have tap” and i decide to just cancel the self checkout and move to him cause hes got good vibes and he holds the bag up and raises an eyebrow allowing me to have a choice in it which i dont often get. when i am leaving he signs “have a good day” super slow and obviously practiced a lot, and the fact that he obviously learned that just in case this happened made me really happy

- every time someone has happened to know ASL in public, its always surprising how many hearing/verbal people know ASL, almost always because they are CODA

- the enthusiastic gay man at my eye doctor who got so excited when he saw i signed even though he doesnt know it, because he thought it was so cool

- every person who goes “oh you speak ASL” and then immediately thinks about thay sentence and kind of 404 errors out as they realize you cant speak ASL

- the tiny middle aged mexican woman who has worked the store at my school the entire time ive been going there who knows me because i always go there for caffeine and snacks, and manages to always communicate with me despite a couple language barriers and will often berate me if i dont get water with my caffeine or if i dont get food, and who also wishes me happy holiday for every holiday that comes around, and was also very visibly worried when i had to rely on a cane for a few months

- my painting professor who always takes so much pressure off because hes so blunt, when i came in with a cane everyone danced around asking about it and he walks in and goes “what the hell happened to you??”, the most recent thing that made me laugh is we were talking and i was using TTS and as we are walking into the studios he goes “im gonna go talk with Ronnie, give your thumbs a break” and then we both started laughing

the worst interaction ive had

- had one of my professors numbers which happens sometimes because it makes life easier and she texted me out of the blue saying she “had a dream she was at my wedding and i spoke my vows” with heart emojis and i did not know this woman at all and i was like…what the fuck…not only is that unprofessional but also ableist

went to a nearby university today since an author whose book I'm reading teaches there and I wanted to ask some questions. wandered until I found something called the deans office and then made a very quick assumption where he might be and asked for directions to that department and the lady there said "oh are you looking for [name], the [job title]? Shes in [room]!" So I just said YES and thanked her and went to [room] where I was just like oh are you [name] and she immediately just said "YES come in!!!" no questions asked she looked bored as fuck and also had the rainbow stuff going on in her room so maybe she was oh what do they call it "enthusiastic about female baldness" but i apologized for intruding and explained that i was directed to you but I'm actually looking to speak to [authors name], and she didnt know who that was, definitely not this department, hmm weird, so we chatted and she looked him up on her computer and asked me about my research which is when I clarified that I'm not a student I just started reading this guy's book last week and realized i happened to be working in the area where he teaches and figured I'd try to speak to him which she thought was super dope so she printed me off a map of the campus and highlighted how to get to him she was really great I wish I hung out with her instead of going to find him and getting shut down hard as fuck the people in his department practically rolled their eyes at me which I absolutely expected but yeah I guess you can just go to universities and talk to faculty so long as they're not also media darlings. So I just been looking up a bunch of people (lesbians. mostly) who do their thing at other universities and have information about things I want to learn about because to be honest I don't really know what school is or life really I just show up places and start asking questions and that seems to be half of the work now the problem is there's this 2 part seminar I really really want to go to about careers in a field of study I'm interested in but its undergraduates only and also invite only but basically I'm thinking of just showing up and acting normal and shaking hands and all of that and by the time they realize I shouldn't be there they'll be like ahh well you're not hurting anyone with your driven curious nature and enthusiasm for learning so sure buddy why dont you stay. I mean how else am I supposed to know if I should sink years of my life into pursuing it? I want to hear the professionals speak to the undergrads and pretend I'm one of their kind so I can really immerse myself in the experience and can from there make an informed decision okay perfect yeah sounds like a plan

i think the scariest thing as of late was hearing young people in my womens bible study thing at church be super enthusiastic about wanting kids (nearly all wanted multiple of them) now this is not concerning on its own but let me add more context they were mainly talking about wanting kids and wanting to live a pretty good life and reach several milestones like finding husbands before... the rapture happens im sorry what (if youre reading this going wtf dont worry me too that is a normal reaction) i just- i dont know, it always scares me when people i know with questionable beliefs in anything want children. it is genuinely so scary, as an advocate for children's rights- because i believe EVERYTHING starts at home, with parents and guardians. statistically speaking, leaving the church is becoming more popular. realizing you are gay is happening more. several of these peoples children in the upcoming decade may very likely grow up and fall out of religion, leaving the church or realizing they are queer as they see the effects of christian nationalism, as they use the internet, as they go to public school (because affording private school in this day and age is NOT possible for the upper middle class group i was raised in at this point, i dont see it being super feasible in the coming years) and are exposed to other viewpoints.

and what will then happen, if these kids become atheists? if they come out? these people ive grown up with- these potential parents- i see them potentially being cruel or horrified about their children not turning out like mini versions of them, of not believing in god- i see them weeping about their kids going to hell. i see their kids potentially falling into the same fate as me, having to hide who they are or being punished. old and cruel traditions being pushed again and again, the same cycle, as these people forgive their parents for everything and never reflect on their feelings. the same cycle continues.

my point isnt "these people should not have kids" because i think that can lead into questionable territory and a lot can change. i am still technically assuming things about these people after all and we are all so young. but i worry a lot about extreme religious people's parenting and the indoctrination they will put their kids through... i hope i can be a voice for kids in the future who need to hide.

Welp I'm not gonna lie, it's all looking very, very strange

However, I do think there is a real possibility they are going for the Tom Brady celebration and that Chris is throwing a bash afterwards. I see it like this: Chris has a very, very parasocial relationship to Tom Brady (much like we do to him) and has always been super super invested and crazy about him (even to the point where he was ASKED about how he felt about Tom being a Trump supporter in a fucking interview. And Chris was disappointed but still loved him. It's absolutely a parasocial relationship)

Considering the many, many parties he throws in general for random reasons, I find it very very probable that he would throw a bash at his house after the game today, where Tom Brady will be present for the first time as a spectator, and they have said in articles it's going to be "a huge celebration of Tom Brady."

Now, why would some of his co-stars be there? Even the ones who aren't super football enthusiasts? (Renner is easy, he's gone to games with Chris before, but RDJ and Hemmy is more strange)

I honestly think they saw it as a chance of press and a reunion. They've all said before how hard it is for them to get together now. They're all on break from working which means none of them have any other engagements to keep them away. They also have no other ways of getting press in the media, other than feeding articles etc. Going to the game, getting photographed etc is a great way to get some press during this off time. And then afterwards a party with their old pals as a reunion, perhaps even staying in Boston for a few days to hang out etc, since no one is working currently. I don't find it far-fetched that Hemmy and RDJ would go for that, considering how close they all were/are.

Hemmy bringing his mom is also curious to me - we didn't see his wife, but his mom. Interesting.

As for the vendor/MUA/hairstylist thing; one of them posted the story WITH A GOAT which was cut out when it was shared on here (🙄 for obvious reasons. Certain blogs on here are trolls and legit just looking to rile you up, please stop believing them) and others are coming because I do believe it's going to be a big, big event. I do believe there will be a lot of celebs showing up, like Wimbledon, in order to get some press and attention. They can't promote their works so this is a great way to get their names out there.

I also think it would be odd if the OG's would come now, to the game (if thats the case) when the "wedding" was supposed to happen soon. Why would they go like two weeks before only to go back home and then come back? That's weird. Unless they actually got married already this weekend, in which case the whole MUA/vendors/hairstylist thing makes no sense. It also doesn't make sense they would go so soon or late to the wedding, depending on when you think it would be. Do we honestly think he's throwing a massive 500 people wedding on a week day?? (lets put aside that if thats the case then he's clearly not the person he's put himself up to be because no "grounded down to earth" person would throw a massive wedding spanning over several days like that)

Not to mention this is all coming right after we found out he in fact DID NOT go on the Bermuda trip and the proof has been out there all along. And yet "sources" came and said they had seen them there. Do you have a theory on why you are so sex obsessed?? Honest question

my mother was always extremely frank and morally neutral about sex so ive never had any of the reservations that i commonly seen in other people (not their fault, a lot of parents just feel gross talking to their kids about the shit they need to hear) so having unfiltered conversations about anatomy and relationships at home was normal which meant talking about sex with just about anyone never felt awkward. non-sexual nudity was v normal in my family as well so i really have no qualms about like. being naked or talking about normal body stuff (obv i only do this around other adults who are comfortable w it)

so thats why im not at all reserved about it but as for actually being sex obsessed, as an adult, sex has just always been super fun and positive for me. ive always been able to very enthusiastically say “i like this, dont like that, tell me what you like” and having that conversation has literally never been a bad thing. i think the reason i took so well to kink-related conversations about consent and boundaries and safewords is bc i was already doing that of my own accord. so yeah. sex fun and good.

thats why im obsessed with sex as an activity, but im also obsessed with sex as a subject because a lot of cultural norms about it are absolutely batshit insane and based on peoples personal biases and nothing more. shit people pick up from their parents, religion, disgust reactions, the way some people are incapable of being normal about adult women being sexual, the way people with personal sex hangups project them onto anything and everything. im not equipped to write any kind of thesis on all that but god it would be SO cool to do that someday.

First of all, I am also very scared that they'll put Acosta and Kenny together romantically. They're both young "cops" so they'll be working together as partners in crime, neither of them have any family, Kenny seems to be the only one willing to be nice to Acosta. They might do an "opposites attract" with their personality type of thing. The loud, outspoken women with the kind, quiet guy. I'm not a fan of Acosta but I know I need to cut her SOME slack because I too would be freaking out if I ended up in that town. Here's to hoping Acosta and Kenny just become friends... Not romantic partners.

On to Kenny and Sarah: Kenny knew how much his mom appreciated Sarah. She almost saw her as a daughter! So to have Sarah betray their family in the way that she did, he absolutely despises her for it. There is a part of him that knows she was manipulated but at the end of the day, SHE made the choice to let the monsters in to kill his dad. She wasn't forced. Sarah has her own free will.

In terms of romantic chemistry, I don't see it between Sarah and Kenny. I do not ship them in the slightest. But if you mean chemistry in the sense of Ricky and Avery acting off of each other then yeah, sure I see it! Kenny and Sarah meant something to each other. They cared about each other. To be betrayed like that... I personally wouldn't be able to forgive my father's murderer let alone get into a relationship with that person. In the future, I do see Kenny not necessarily forgiving Sarah but being able to... Move on? And be able to work together to accomplish what needs to be done.

Your opinion is controversial but you aren't alone in seeing their chemistry because I have seen a few people jumping onto that bandwagon. Not many, but a few!

OK this one wont be super long bc ill be accompanying it with doodles but, u know the drill, under read more so i dont stretch people’s dashboards out

im gonna start with rinne i think he is VERY enthusiastic. he’s so happy to be there man. like he’s usually loud and kind of obnoxious regardless but this brings it out even more, most fans eat it up bc thats just his persona now, right. if any older fans show up he gets a bit softer/quieter to accommodate for them because he trusts them. 

if he notices fans being too shy/awkward he’ll try his best to hype them up and make them feel welcome i.e everybody be nice to this fan or i’ll blow this whole place up! but at the same time it’s like the second he sniffs out that they’re nervous he becomes a bit more pushy (WELL-MEANING OFC) AND IT CAN GET TO BE ALMOST SCARY… HE WILL EITHER GET SOFT AND UNDERSTANDING OR HE WILL EXPLODE ON U AND TRY TO MAKE U EXCITED WITH HIM THERES NO IN-BETWEEN… he will point out that ur nervous and ask u why that is. maybe poke a little bit of fun. obviously not enough to make you cry or whatever but enough for you to shake a little bit, so that after you leave you can look back at the pictures and memories like damn im actually glad rinne amagi helped me out of my shell

hes like an apex predator he can sense fear but instead of k wording you he forces you to do peace signs with him in photos

niki like always is super friendly and welcoming. he tries his best to make fans have fun! he isn’t nearly as pushy as rinne and doesn’t really pry. he makes small talk and if he thinks you smell nice he Will point it out! he will compliment and laugh a lot and overall be very silly. 80% of any event he’s playing footsie with rinne under the table and occasionally during fan meets they’ll start play bickering both for The Bit and also because they cant go too long without doing it it sustains them. 

one concerning thing about niki is that regardless of the circumstances he will always ALWAYS accept food, even though he is not supposed to. he sneaks off to eat snacks to prevent hunger pangs and if any fan catches him while offering food he will most assuredly be like oh hell ya, which is why the other guys are constantly on the look-out for him. while almost all fans do it in good faith i can imagine he’s gotten sick from at least one instance of this happening but he never learns because he cannot for the life of him turn down stuff he can eat. kohaku and rinne literally always have an eye on him to make sure his breaks stay short and to haul his ass back to the table 

himeru is perfect. like as a meet and greet idol he is exemplary. it’s almost scary. he gives the perfect amount of small talk, compliments you just enough, smiles the whole time. holds your hand for enough time, brushes his hair behind his ear acting all handsome, laughs at anything and everything that might be a joke….it’s like he has a mental checklist for every encounter. he studies this shit every night before an event so he has it down to a T. he makes meeting the others feel like youre talking to the teletubbies 

like rinne he senses fear and while he doesnt push like rinne does it’s almost like. he’s smug about it. he knows he’s that good! HE’S SO RADIANT YOU CAN’T LOOK AT HIM FOR TOO LONG…

ok lastly kohaku! kohaku i feel like would definitely try his best to copy himeru. he thinks the other two are not good examples, so partly himeru’s trying to show off because he knows kohaku is watching. being good friends with aira also has him practicing this a lot with him, too. but on his own kohakuchan is good at talking to people, slightly less good at maintaining eye contact or handshakes but he’s working on it! you can tell he’s new to it but he’s trying his best so it makes it all the more endearing. 

the other three point it out a lot when they think he or the fans can’t hear. not in a malicious way theyre just happy to see kohaku’s having fun. his encounters definitely feel a little more rushed but not because he necessarily wants it to be over you can tell hes just a bit more nervous to be 1 on 1. sometimes the other guys do something stupid in the sidelines so he can get angry and have him let loose. anyways Be nice to him

I never write Neji because, I don't know, I dont have him figure out and I haven't found the angle through which he would interest me. (I'm not saying he isn't interesting! But we haven't clicked yet.)

I do really like Kankurou and Tenten as a friendship, so I'm thinking maybe when Kankurou is in Konoha they spar every so often? Neji lives AU. Kankurou doesn't know Neji much, just to the extend that he's part of the Konoha 13 so they are vaguely appointed. But maybe he sees him around at times and I mean, he's a little pretty. He could ask Tenten if he's free. She might be excited about the gossip potential of seeing all of this unfold so she encourages it.

Or maybe Neji's having a rough time because of som clan shit or idk and Kankurou asks Tenten "Is you're teammate okay? He's been looking stressed out lately." and she explains a bit and Kankurou goes for a chat and offer a spar to Neji to distract him for a bit. After all Kankurou's not foreign to councils and heirs bullshit haha.

I had never thought about them and it's a bit hard to imagine I think because I ship GaaLee too much haha. (But then again I do ship KankuShika extensively, so that shouldn't stop me.)

I imagine Lee being over in Suna and sparring with Kankurou, and he's very enthusiastic about it because he is who he is, giving advices and praising Kankurou for good moves while they spar. And it's pissing Kankurou off that Lee is so much better than him that he has the time to do that while fighting 😂 Lee would be like "That was a great parade Kankurou-san!" while counterattacking with no struggle and Kankurou feels a little taken pity on. Lee is genuine, of course, but well, it's not rubbing Kankurou's ego the right way. He needs to come back to Lee for something he can win this time and flatter his self esteem with a bit. Maybe that thing is flirting, who knows?

I have an AU I have never written for yet that among others includes KankuSai. It's mostly a BDSM smut AU with Kankurou as a Dom. Sai's non-binary and not super experienced. They're the one of Kankurou's partners that he is the most gentle with. It's mostly a work of proving them that they are very much desirable and that there is no need to overpass their boundaries and do things that they're not comfortable with or that make them dysphoric to find ways to 1 feel good themselves 2 make a partner feel good.

For a more canonverse thing, I can actually also see it with Sai being the most proactive one in them getting together! Trying to hit on on Kankurou and his technique is probably... You know. Sai. At times too blunt, at times convoluted in an obscure way because he's read that in a book. And at first Kankurou is wondering if he's just making fun of him and is pretty confused by the whole thing, but eventually he decides to give it a try. After all he does have that much to loose. At worse it'll be weird between them but it's already weird, so. And it goes well! Sai is actually a bit funny and nice an interest, even if his communication is not always easy to understand. So they do it again and eventually I suppose become a thing.

Whats your view on the Case of Päivi Räsänen that she is not guilty of "hate speech". She says its a win for freedom of speech. Which i partly agree, i also dont think its hatespeech to quote the bible and explain why you dont agree with a certain lifestyle, but i think tolerance (not acceptance) is nice and sometimes you can just shut the fuck up. I also dont comment on other peoples relationship, because its not my relationship. Also i dont feel comfortable with someone from an ideology which has a long history of censorship (blasphemy laws) in the past.

Supporting freedom of speech is super-easy when we agree with what's being said. But that's not why it's there or why it's needed. You don't need freedom of speech when everybody's in agreement and likes what's being said. It's much harder to support it when it's something we strongly disagree with or even find appalling and vile.

There's a distinction between supporting what someone says, and supporting their right to say it. And a further distinction between holding and arguing ideas we might not like, and someone actually inciting or advocating violence or the violation of people's rights. Or being compelled to go along with them. It's okay to be a Xian and to believe that everybody needs salvation through Jesus Christ, but you don't get to go round to your work colleagues and tell them that they need to accept Jesus or burn in hell, even if you actually believe it. It's okay to be a Woke and to believe that the world is controlled by invisible nebulous power forces, but you don't get to insist others be trained to believe the same.

It's not just the right to the ideas you have or believe, but how you go about exercising that right. It's the difference between "speech you hate," and "hate speech," which is supposed to be about targeting and inciting. But I would argue similar to things I've said before about my own criticism of Islam. I'm allowed to hold anti-Islam views. I can write about them. I can make my arguments and put forth my evidence, quote the scripture, etc. But I don't get to call for Muslims to be hunted down and killed, or to violate their right to their religion. That doesn't mean I can't insist they be held to the same standards as everyone else with regard to how they practice it. They don't get to block roads while praying. They don't get to hang their daughters upside down in a garage to beat their feet for failing to properly recite the quran. The laws of the land still apply.

There's a few reasons why that's important.

There's a liberal principle that laws that are applicable to a society should be created such that you would accept those laws regardless of what part you play in that society: rich, poor, male, female, black, white. (Of course, "antiracism™" and CRT activists explicitly object to such neutrality.)

Or to put it another way, rules you use to control someone else's speech can be used by them to control yours. Political parties do not remain in office forever - except in a dictatorship - and you don't want to create or give them the weapon that they can use against you.

I've been watching what's been going on in Ireland, and as far as I can tell, it's a disaster in the making. Especially the "for the greater good" language. Not only is this an ominous portent of authoritarianism, but even if this isn't misused by its creators, they will not hold office forever. i think in a modern AU setting they def do double dates or big couple hangs, but i dont know if i think they do it a lot cause they already do spend a lot of time together. i feel like gaara is very selective in who is in his close inner circle and thus who he actively seeks out to spend time with, and generally i dont see tenten and neji as having breached that, or sakura and ino so i dont think hes super invested in double dates but would still do it for Lee. temari and shikamaru (and Kankuro if he ever commits to someone) its like technically yeah that would be a double or triple day but they’re family so they always do stuff together anyways so it doesn’t feel quite as specific unless its like an occasion.

And I agree that finding AUs in which PV is crazy is quite a rarity, and probably fate brought us together on purpose so that we could create more similar AUs with PV 😈

Actually im not done thinking about codotverse Riddler's Super 50. Do you know how interesting I think it is that he has and drives around a 1949 Super 50? I think it's so fascinating and intriguing and I'm going to try to put it into words

1949 Buick Super 50s are collectors items right? Buick and other car enthusiasts jump at the bit to get their hands on one, because it was the first time in years that buick had produced a brand new design for their cars, and they only sold it for a year. I consider this design to be very classy, sleek, and very dramatic. All things I would also consider mr riddler.

Now what I find most interesting is that he actually drives it around. I dont know how common it is for collectors to drive their cars about town, I assume common enough because you cant really just let it sit there otherwise it can become damaged, but also you cant really drive them around too much bc theres a higher risk of external damage as well. So probably they just drive it around the block once a month. But I dont think collectors will drive their 1949 super 50 across country. That's FAR too much of a risk to damage. But Riddler did! He drove it all the way to georgia and Minesota! He actually uses it like a car and not like a glass figure. (I assume. granted i dont think there was any reference to him driving the 50 specifically but that is the only car that has ever been mentioned and when he's scolding Query and Echo he refers to them taking care of his car in the singular so I'm assuming thats his only car)

It's like he wants to be seen as classy, and I would say even gentlemanly as shown by him having said car and his 1866 Derringer (things I personally think are classy and gentlemanly), but then breaks and distorts that image by using these items with their original intended use instead of preserving them. It feels like hes intentionally breaking the 'rules'. Probably mostly to show off, but also it makes a statement about his whole mindset of refusing to be controlled and not wanting to be forced into place. So he acts out even in the smallest and most insignificant ways. idk. I lost my train of thought.

Anyway i just think its interesting that he went through all the trouble to get this cool car then kind of break the 'rules' with it.
