Maybe Sonic's parents microwaved him as a baby to give him special speed powers so he could be a great warrior and save the planet from disaster?

So my partner and I created some fan-parents for Sonic. He has a dad and a parent. Sonic was created lab-baby style and thus some dormant genetics regarding his brighter color and eyes came through. He was also born with female characteristics. They were not expecting him to have super-speed either as neither of them possess such abilities.
More under the cut.
His father, Dwight, has lightning powers that he will later display and unlock via Frontiers. Ja’ni, his parent, can control and create ether which is the substance through which all life and matter exist and it comes through as star and space-like abilities which lends to Sonic’s future fascination with stars, space, and similar.
Dwight has always been a very cutthroat man, ever since his parents were murdered by GUN-like wannabes for simply being super-powered Mobians- something that the humans never were fond of.
However, his resentment and rage goes unchecked and starts to bleed into how he intends to raise Sonic. He reveals plans to Ja’ni about growing the child into being a sort of super-soldier and leading a resistance against the humans. He wishes for Sonic to be his legacy and to assist him in carrying out his plans to wipe humanity off the face of Mobius and take back their planet. He wants to protect Sonic and his family.
Ja’ni only wishes for Sonic to be a kid and not have to worry about starting a war that he never chose to be a part of. After trying to change Dwight’s mind and failing countless of times, Ja’ni makes a difficult decision.
In the dead of night, Ja’ni ends up stealing Sonic away, traveling across several dimensions, and surrendering him to a group of owls, one of which is Longclaw, to be raised into a happy life away from the hardships and conditioning he would have faced. In this dimension, Longclaw is not killed.
Ja’ni sticks around in the dimension, but takes care to never interfere with Sonic’s life, only keeping tabs on him to make sure he’s… alive. And Sonic seems all the better for it. He’s made a lot of friends, is a world-renowned hero, plus, he’s trans, so that’s cool! Good for him!
But there may come a day where they are all reunited. Especially, when a certain father discovers the dimension where his son has been taken to. However, things are not quite as they were before and that has its own unique challenges.

Meet my MC: Ella
TCH Masterlist
General
Book: The Cursed Heart
Love Interest: Kieran
Pronouns: She/her
Birthday: March 19th
Zodiac Sign: Pisces
Birthplace: A tiny village
Current location: The Moon Palace
Found Family: Kieran, Longclaw, Sir Monty, Oleander
Magical Animal Friends: Leaf, Plum (thistle bat), Kieran's ravens (occasionally, depends on the day)
Personality: Kind, caring, trusting, patient, loyal, curious, accepting, resilient, honest, imaginative, stubborn, clever, empathetic,
Many believe that Ella's kindness and willingness to trust others is her weakness, but it is truly her greatest strength. She defeated the Sun Court and a power-hungry Fae after all. She even was able to get Kieran to warm up to her, which seemed like a near-impossible task for a while. Her warmth and generous nature shine through in almost all her interactions.
Physical Appearance
Hair: Orangy redish, wavy with curls
Eye color: Blue
Height: 5'6"
Hobbies
Reading: She picked up reading while in the Moon Palace and became a huge bookworm. Kieran would often have to pry books out of her hands to get her to come to bed.
Healing: Despite this technically being a job, she loves being able to help others. She often finds herself reading about all the different Fae plants and learning more about their magical properties from Longcalw, which she finds fascinating.
Ice skating: Winters were normally brutal in the village she grew up in, but her parents would take her to a nearby lake to ice skate on days when the weather was decent. She became very good at it and often would challenge the other village children to races and "skate-offs," as she called it. She explained ice skating to Kieran and he couldn't believe that humans would willingly stand on blades just so they could move on frozen water.
The Past
Childhood: Ella has always been a curious girl. She often would find herself wandering into the woods despite her parents warnings. She dreamed every night of the world the was just past the woods, wonding whether or not the grand, magical tales her parents would tell her before bed were real.
Besides her curiosity, her mother trained her in the art of healing. Ella would often assist her in treating those who were ill in the village and others in neighboring locations. As a young child, she could tell you about any plant growing in the woods, whether it had healing properties, and if it was safe for humans.
When her parents died from illness, the owner of the local tavern took her in. That is where she stayed and when she was old enough, worked until the beginning of TCH 1. But, she did dabble in healing here and there when someone was ill. I like to believe that if fate hadn't brought her and Kieran together, she probably would of become the village healer, following in her mother's footsteps.
The Future
What happens in my HC: Honestly, I'm not really sure yet. I know for a fact that Ella and Kieran get married, but I'm still unsure if I want Ella to stay mortal like how book 2 ends, or somehow find a way to make her become immortal. Maybe I'll have to expore this in a fanfic someday, I'm just not sure when I'll make up my mind lol.
What doesn't happen in my HC but is fun to imagine: Kieran gives up his immortality at the end of book 2. Ella and him get married, have kids, and grow old together. I touched base on this in a fic I posted here. Genuinely want to continue this because I loved writing it soooooo much, so stay tuned lol.

My own Sonic 3: a very bad dumb thesis
I haven’t been able to physically stop thinking about the third sonic movie so I was like fuck it I’m gonna write all this down but fuck it’s so long now. I did this instead of sleeping wtf.
Part 1: old characters and their arcs
Sonic
Sonic’s thing in this movie is finding his destiny as a hero and where he belongs in the universe. It has to end with him saying bye to his human dad John or whatever his name is because I’m pretty sure these movies are meant to serve as origins. Or at least that’s how I’m treating it.
I think our first look at sonic after the last movie would be him struggling to lay low. He would be doing small-town hero work and trying to explore green hill as much as he can but he’s got a bit of a “when will my life begin” “part of your world” shtick going on. He’s itching to get out there and he’s also kind of questioning his own origins. He doesn’t know what he is or where he’s from except that he’s a hedgehog with power he doesn’t understand.
I like imagining a scene where he rewatched that hologram from Longclaw over and over looking for some sort of clue about his origins but he just can’t find anything. Later in the movie perhaps he’ll reuinite with Longclaw or maybe she’s like dead or something idk.
So when he hears about Planet Mobius for the first time he is immediately intrigued by the idea of other people like him. So he has to choose between earth and that new place. And then when Shadow comes into the mix and introduces the chaos emeralds, which are revealed to share the same type of power as Sonic, that throws an extra wrench into the mix.
Overall, Sonic’s arc is just taking everything he learned and experienced in the last two movies and using it to become the hero of Mobius and he leaves and becomes the Sonic the hedgehog we know today.
Tails
This is his realizing he’s a badass arc. He probably has one of the more simple arcs of the cast. He starts out wanting to be like Sonic, but after failing to be like Sonic, he realizes he can only be like himself.
Tails’ real shining points are in his relationships with other characters. I want a montage of Sonic and Tails broing out and doing dumb kid things. Tails just thinks Sonic is endlessly cool and Sonic thinks Tails is endlessly cool and Sonic protects him from danger and they have sibling vibes and aghhh
I also like the idea that Tails and Amy know each other because I think that friendly reunion would be cute. I know Tails said he didn’t have any friends on his home planet but Idk I just want a scene where Tails shows up after Amy and Sonic have already been introduced and they’re so excited to see each other and Amy’s like “you’ve been taking care of him all this time? Thank you so much!” To Sonic and they’re just good friends and they hug that’s all I want
Knuckles
Knuckles’ whole deal is an internal conflict between his past and his future, his sense of responsibility with his true wants. He’s been on earth for a bit, he’s becoming accustomed, he’s vibing, but he’s sort of latched onto the idea of assuming Sonic’s responsibility of looking after the master emerald out of guilt for the actions of his ancestors.
Yes, his people obviously didn’t deserve to be slaughtered, but the master emerald was there thanks to their recklessness, and now he must protect it not only from those who might use it for evil but as the final remnant of his past.
So he’s kind of latched onto that idea and still holds some of his previous ideals about honor and legacy. However, as the story goes on we see him break from his ideas of preserving the past and rather paving way for the future. And also just letting himself catch a break and getting over the guilt and the responsibility he’s put on himself. Part of this breakthrough is through Amy which I will talk about later.
Also he hates Rouge. But also kinda digs her. Idk they just argue a lot but also they fight and it would be so cool. I talk about it more in Rouge’s section
Also the part in sonic 2 where knuckles hoists up Tails like he’s his little brother that’s. That’s the vibe with him and Tails. All three of them are brothers and Sonic and Knuckles fight a lot but they will kill for Tails and they’re bros.
Part 2: new characters and their personalities (and voice headcannons)
Rouge
first scene of the movie is her trying to steal the master emerald. After teaming up with shadow and Robotnik, she inevitably gets betrayed and has a change of heart, then switches to the good side.
I want her to be the funniest character in the movie aside from Shadow. She will be the snarkiest, campiest, bestest girl. And I want the animators to go all out giving her expressive character acting and charm. However, while doesn’t take herself too seriously and isn’t afraid to crack a joke or tease an opponent, she’s also fucking deadly and incredibly cool. Let her be cool because she is cool.
I imagine the movie would start with your standard good vs evil teams, but at some point Rouge gets redeemed and switches over to Sonic’s team and Sonic begins to go with Shadow to find out more about the chaos emeralds and his past.
Anyway, the most interesting relationships she has in the movie are with Knuckles and Shadow. The very first scene of the movie I think should be Rouge and Knuckles meeting, then bantering and flirting, her trying to steal the emerald, and them fighting before she escapes. When she gets her redemption they continue to argue and banter, but it’s cute and they’re on the same team now, even if Knuckles insists he doesn’t trust her.
Her friendship with Shadow I think would need several scenes dedicated to it cause I really want them to bond. I want Rouge to take him under her wing and implant the idea of mistrust in Shadow’s head and then have to deal with the repercussions of treating him that way after her redemption. I want them to trauma-bond. They’re gonna be besties and then there will be a fallout but they’ll be left with a profound respect and admiration for one another.
Now, for the biggest debate in all of sonic history. Should she keep her boobs? I say yes because it would be funny to see parents get offended by a bat with boobies. But also as a woman it’s nice to see those kinds of body types in a non-sexual context and movies like this are no exception.
Also if you haven’t already seen I am a firm believer that she needs to be voiced by Wendie Malick. If you need convincing, go find my proof of concept animatic that is totally serious and not a shitpost.
Amy
In this movie she’s a general, sort of like in forces, but she still prides herself on being very cute and is still super sweet. She’s just a little more level-headed and has more of a goal since she doesn’t already know Sonic and wouldn’t have a motivation otherwise.
Amy comes from Mobius. She is going after Rouge after finding out she has a chaos energy detector and needing to find out that she’s up to.
Her relationship with Sonic is not necessarily romantic as I imagine that the moviemakers wouldn’t want to include that. However, it’s like the closest it can possibly get without crossing the barrier. I want to play with the idea of Amy being the more level-headed, caring, and detail-oriented one of the group. She’s there to remind everyone to slow down and use their heads. I want to see a scene where Sonic becomes overwhelmed and feels the need to rush into battle, but Amy centers him and time literally slows down, like a slo-mo shot, she becomes his anchor in that moment and is the only thing able to slow him down.
After Rouge’s redemption, they become besties and we can have a girl power moment during battle.
She also has a moment with Knuckles after he learns she’s part echidna which inspires him to think about a possibly different future for the echidna legacy as he’s never heard of a hybrid echidna before. Before that moment, the two would have likely butted heads.
I like the head cannon of her being Anna Kendrick. But for some reason, when thinking about it originally my first thought for her was Kristen bell. Idk I think it fits
Shadow
honestly I think that prime would be a pretty good blueprint for Shadow’s personality in the movie as he’s fucking awesome in that show, but I think the key difference is giving Shadow this sense of grief. He’s just full of anger and sorrow and fear because he just woke up from this 50 year stasis and is suddenly confronted with a lot of responsibility and stuff going on. Like a cross between his debut self in SA2 and his prime self.
Other than that, make him reckless and impulsive but also have this inflated ego and sense of justice or righteousness. But also let him get a little cocky during a fight and crack a joke every once in a while. You know, personality.
His role in the story is he’s brought back by Robotnik in order to complete the Robotnik family legacy and to harness the chaos emeralds to take over the world.
He has already been exposed to the information about the Chaos emeralds and so part of his role in the story is actually introducing this stuff to Sonic.
Like, I want a scene where Shadow explains how Sonic’s power and the emeralds’ power are one in the same, yet he doesn’t know why or how, and he shows Sonic how to use chaos control.
I think initially he and Sonic would be similar to Knuckles and Sonic in the second movie where they just kind of fight and Sonic is like “who is this chump” but as each of them become genuinely curious about Sonic and the emeralds and Shadow gets suspicious of Robotnik, they sort of convene and try to find the truth. And they’re each trying to bring the other to their own side, but then they realize they’re kind of on the same side anyway.
And then at the end we find out his dramatic backstory with Maria and Gerald. I physically NEED us to see his backstory in the movie it would be so good. I want to see Shadow being created. His adventures with Maria and them bonding, and then her tragic death. And I want Maria to be played either by some random Disney channel child actress who will become a pop icon in the next 5 years or a random child actress from a very sad movie I’ve never heard of.
Also, if paramount wants the fans to be happy, all the Sonic and Shadow fights need to be animated by sonadow shippers I don’t make the rules that’s how you please us.
As for Shadow’s voice, I’m thinking Norman Reedus. He’s just kind of a badass and I think he could suit the role well. Also I find it funny
Part 3: the Jim issue… the jimssue. Nevermind
Eggman
So, you may be wondering: how is eggman supposed to return if Jim Carrey retired? Well I have an idea and I think it’s fucking hilarious. My pitch is thus: Jim Carrey is not OUR egg man. OUR egg man that we see in the games is actually agent stone
We all know agent stone is kind of fruity, so what’s fruitier than taking your dead lover’s name, bioengineering yourself beyond recognition to achieve his intellect and completing his family’s legacy of project shadow in his honor?
Then it could even tie in to Knuckles’ theme about the difference between carrying on a legacy and letting it take over who you are as a person. While he’s no Jim Carey, I still like the actor for Stone and think it’s such a stupid idea it just might work.
Plus, I imagine Eggman ends up following sonic to Mobius and I love the idea of every evil plot that he commits in cannon being fueled by him grieving his dead gay lover Jim Carrey who’s identity he stole.
Part 4: Misc
(Btw if you’re wondering why I haven’t mentioned any of the new human characters yet that’s because I don’t care about them)
Other things include a shot of mobius where we can get a bunch of character cameos in the background like team chaotix or cream and Vanilla.
We can get a modern band to do a cover of escape from the city because I feel like that’s the song everyone knows but we got to get crush 40 to do a remastered version of live and learn.
Knuckles needs to stop talking like a robot it’s weird especially in the end scene of sonic 2 why does he talk like that. I imagine that considering they’re giving him his own spin-off series this will end up being toned down but I just hope it’s not laid on as thick in sonic 3. I’m fine with him not understanding earth stuff cause like he’s an alien but he doesn’t have to speak in fractured sentences.
Pumpkin hill leitmotif. I don’t care where I don’t even care if they don’t go to pumpkin hill just put in the doo doo doo-doo doo-doo doo-doo-do-
Part 5: conclusion
So yeah I think that’s it…
…
Bye.

Game of Thrones - 60 JON VIII (pages 628-640)
Jon receives some get well presents. Lord Commander Mormont bequeaths him with Longclaw, and Maester Aemon bequeaths him with philosophy and a warning for the road ahead.
-
Jon thanked all the gods that no one but Ghost saw him writhing on his bed, whimpering from the pain. And when at last he did sleep, he dreamt, and that was even worse. In the dream, the corpse he fought had blue eyes, black hands, and his father's face, but he dared not tell Mormont that.
Milk of the Poppy giving folks all the trauma fluffing dream sequences.
working through stuff or enigmatically prophetic dreams = 🥛
"- There will be more, though. I can feel it in these old bones of mine, and Maester Aemon agrees. The cold winds are rising. Summer is at an end, and a winter is coming such as this world has never seen." Winter is coming. The Stark words had never sounded so grim or ominous to Jon as they did now.
*has never seen in the 8,000 ish years since the last Long Night.
Yet the wolf sword actually seemed lighter than the blades he had wielded before. When Jon turned it sideways, he could see the ripples in the dark steel where the metal had been folded in on itself again and again. "This is Vlayrian steel, my lord." he said, wonderingly. His father had let him handle Ice often enough; he knew the look, the feel. ... The bastard blade glittered in the pale sunlight, dark and deadly. "Valyrian steel," he declared solemnly, trying to sound as pleased and proud as he ought to have felt. "I heard of a man who had a razor made of Valyrian steel," declared Toad. "He cut his head off while trying to shave." ... "I was heir to my father's blade once," he said mournfully. "Heartsbane. Lord Randyll let me hold it a few times, but it always scared me. It was Valyrian steel, beautiful but so sharp I was afraid I'd hurt one of my sisters. Dickon will have it now."
Valyrian steel = 🥛🥛🥛 Because Longclaw is brought up throughout the chapter, for this chapter, I'm only counting mentioned Valyrian steel objects, even if the razor is just a tall tale. Although if it was the name it would only be one extra drink...
"Ser Endrew?" Jon did not know the name. "Ser Endrew Tarth, a good man. -"
Tarth? Brienne's from Tarth! Is... that... related or relevant, or did GRRM run out of names at some point?
"- He's bringing the hand your Ghost tore off the end of Jaffer Flower's wrist. I have commanded him to take ship to King's Landing and lay it before this boy king. That should get Joffrey's attention, I'd think... and Ser Alliser's a knight, highborn and anointed, with old friends at court, altogether harder to ignore than a glorified crow."
Ooohhh, he doesn't know how thoroughly Joffrey cleaned court, or how little Joffrey cares about anything that's not himself, or himself abusing his power over people... everyone can see several ways this might go wrong, right?
... Murphy? Murphy what are you doing? Noooo!!! Stop, stop, it's already going so wrong!
Jon made himself smile back at them, but his heart was not in it. He knew he should be pleased, yet he did not feel it. His hand ached, and the taste of anger was in his mouth, though he could not have said who he was angry at or why.
My guess? part of that is the pain and recent trauma Jon went through, coupled with the fact that he just got "Off-brand" Ice.
He was just given the thing that he's been craving for much of his life, but it came from the wrong person. When there's that much emotional attachment to idea or event, having it be not correct in any way can be very upsetting. It's like a taunt or a tease "here's a taste of what you wanted, but you have to enjoy it knowing it will never be the 'real' thing, it will only be a shadowy imitation of what you wanted" and that's because there's a major component missing. But when it comes to this specifically? The most vital component is missing, because strip it down to its base, it's not about the accolades or the sword, but the emotional connection and acceptance from Ned. The removal of that final barrier between Jon and the Stark family.
His friends meant well, but they did not understand. It was not their fault, not truly; they had not had to face Othor, they had not seen the pale glow of those dead eyes, had not felt the cold of those dead black fingers. Nor did they know of the fighting in the riverlands. How could they hope to comprehend? ... ... and suddenly he found himself remembering how he'd found him, that day in the late summer snow. They had been riding back, and there he was, white fur almost invisible against the drifts. He was all alone, he thought, apart from the others in the litter. He was different, so they drove him out.
Now back up a moment, Jon. As I recall it, Ghost was the only one of the pups who'd even opened their eyes, these were newborns trying to suckle from a dead wolf. Did they drive him out? Or is it more likely that he, the eldest of the litter, or at least the fastest to start adapting to their new environment, tried to go looking for something that he could actually ingest? Did they drive him out, or are you projecting your own feelings of alienation onto Ghost?
Maester Aemon: It's easy to throw everything away for honor when you have nothing to lose.
I feel like it's important Aemon (formerly of House Targaryen) is the one who gives him this speech, both as someone who has faced the same losses Jon's about to, but also as one member of the Targaryen bloodline to another, a bloodline that puts so much importance on their blood and their status that comes from that blood.
For Aemon to stand there and say "I've made the hard choices, and you will have to make them as well, but my choices aren't yours, you have to decide what's right for you" while I know (roughly) where his choices will lead... It just feels very much like "family doesn't begin and end with blood, it's also a choice." No matter what Jon decides now or later, it's a choice. Not destiny, not fate, not some biological imperative, just. A Choice.

I HEARD YOU LIKE MOVIE SONKNUX AND LEMME SAY THAT I HAVE A MORBID FASCINATION OVER HOW THEIR DYNAMIC COULD GO WITH THE TRAUMA AND LONGCLAW AND ECHIDNA AND EVERYTHING OH MY GOD
SHAKES YOU SHAKES YOU IM SO GLAD WE’RE ON THE SAME PAGE OMGGGGGGGG
The fact that the director expressed how much he cares about their relationship makes me SO EXCITED AND HOPEFUL THAT THEY’RE GONNA HIT ALL THESE POINTS FOR THEM, ESPECIALLY BACKSTORY WISE AAAHHHHHH
I get. So Much out of the thought that these guys have been against eachother before they even knew who they were (due to being pitted against eachother by the Echidna and Longclaw). After the Eggman betrayal, only then will they finally get to decide how they feel about eachother without the input of anyone else, especially on Knuckles’ end.
ALSO I’VE MADE A LOT OF BACKSTORY ASSUMPTIONS ALREADY BUT HERE ME OUT: If Knuckles truly is still the Master Emerald guardian in this canon (along with being around Sonic’s age), its obvious why he wouldn’t be anywhere near the Longclaw attack, he’s being kept safe away from it. And maybe that’s how it is for him in general. Whilst Sonic got to have a childhood where he favoured his freedom and need for adventure over keeping his powers hidden, Knuckles might’ve been heavily sheltered due to the role he would soon take on. Maybe his only knowledge of what’s beyond his tribe is from their stories (how he could know about Sonic). I think this concept already provides some of the contrast these two characters have in most canon, especially when you consider that Knuckles doesn’t approve of how impulsive Sonic can be to a dangerous extent (yknow. such as getting caught by the Echidna when he was running around causing Longclaw to get left behind while he fled to Earth).
Having that contrast still present in some area of their life is especially important when considering that their movie selves actually can relate to eachother more than most canon due to (presumably) both of them growing up alone in the world without a family. It might be too hopeful to assume this will get addressed well, but I think it can be something so unique to these interpretations that I at least want fanon to make something out of it if it goes under the radar.
Speaking of my last paragraph, let me end this LONG response off with my favourite thing ever to come from this potential concept: Again, Sonic knows what it’s like to be alone, considering the emotional strife he went through (it made him cause a HUGE POWER OUTAGE), but he ultimately found his family and got accepted by at least one person. If he finds out that Knuckles was/is going through a similar thing, and Robotnik’s betrayal (potentially featuring a stolen M.E.) just made him stray even further from a “happy ending” like Sonic’s.....how do you think he’s going to react.
#it’s literally 8am and you’ve already got me infodumping LMAO /POS#I’D LOVE TO HEAR SOME OF UR THOUGHTS TOO THOUGH DUDE WE MIGHT BE ON THE SAME BRAINWAVES#BUT IF WE AREN’T I’D LOVE TO KNOW WHAT I’M MISSING OUT ON OEOOEOOEOE#I LOVE THESE GUYS SOBS#sonic movie 2#sonic#sonic the hedgehog#sonic the hedgehog 2#knuckles#knuckles the echidna#this isn’t really about sonknux/sonuckles/knuxonic as a ship so ??#vics silly brain zone

Sonic Headcanon please
Ok, here it is! another 40 headconnons! hope you enjoy!
• Sonic has a lot of family, his first being his biological family Queen Aleena, Sonia, and Manic, his second family (aka adopted family) is Jules The Hedgehog, Bernadette The Hedgehog, and Charles The Hedgehog, (also Scourge is Bernadette and Jules' biological son, making Sonic and him brothers) and last but not least, Longclaw, she was Sonics last guardian before Eggman took over the world completely, oh! And Tails is still Sonic's little brother
• Sonic knows sign language and he considers it his first language
• Sonic likes to view himself as the oldest, even though Scourge is older by ten seconds and Shadow is physically 16 (we are not counting the 50 years he was frozen in time)
• Given the fact that Sonic basically has three moms, he's come up with a way to distinguish them when he calls, he calls Aleena - momma, Bernadette - mom, and Longclaw - ma, he refuses to call any of them "mother" saying "it's too fancy for me"
• Whenever Sonic takes on a new form, they don't just disappear. They instead end up living inside Sonic's mind until he calls them to help (I can make another post explaining this a bit more if anyone wants it)
• Sonic didn't meet Tails until he was eight, which would make Tails 1 at the time (I have a complete timeline in my head, I just need to write it out XD)
• Sonic knows how to play the guitar and would take song requests from Tails. He'll sometimes write songs for Tails as well
• Sonic can sense spirits
• During the Phantom War, when Sonic was captured, he was chained to the wall (think of snatcher from ahit) with his legs locked up (similar to the cuffs Elsa from frozen had, except both legs are in one cuff)
• During Sonic's capture, Infinite would make Sonic feel as though he lost his arms/legs/hands with the phantom ruby's power, he'd also take advantage of Sonic's Aquaphobia by making him think that he was in the middle of the ocean during a storm
• Sonic doesn't want to worry anyone about what happened in the Death Egg, so he's bottling it all up, he thinks he's sneaky, but everybody knows somethings wrong
• Sonic still has Chip's necklace/bracelet in his room on a pillow. He makes sure no dust settles on it
• Sonic may be optimistic and not take things seriously, but there are times, rare as they are, when he sits down, skips all the jokes, and be serious
• Sonic's been teaching Silver sign language. He finds it funny how Silver lights up whenever he learns a new sign
• When Sonic was rescued, he was malnourished, he had lots of injuries, and most of his muscles atrophied. He spent the first few days bedridden and two months in a wheelchair and, after some physical therapy, he upgraded to crutches. He had to stay in the med bay area so the nurses could keep a better eye on him, but either way, he didn't want anyone to see him like that, and those who did don't bring it up, for his sake
• After the Phantom War, Sonic preferred to be outside more often than before. Tails stayed by his side, working on one of his smaller projects
• Sonic considers Mighty, Ray, and Knuckles as his brothers
• Sonic knows how to use a hoverboard thanks to Manic
• Sonic kicks in his sleep if he doesn't run around when he's awake, once he accidentally woke up Tails by breaking the lamp beside his bed, so now whenever Tails knows he didn't run around that much, he moves everything away from Sonic's bed before he goes to sleep
• Sonic and Tails are roommates
• Whenever there's a thunderstorm, Sonic lets Tails sleep with him
• When Tails was younger, Sonic would read him bedtime stories, sometimes even play a few lullabies with his guitar
• Sonic gave up his childhood when he was separated from Longclaw, having to learn to take care of himself, having to fight at the age of 5, lead an army with Sonia, Manic, and Sally a year later, and ending a war at 8, along with taking care of, and raising a 1-year-old two-tailed fox, Sonic didn't have much time to not worry about what would happen next (even though he never shows it)
• Sonic learned to be positive no matter what because not only did everyone around him need the positive energy, but it was also his way of telling a crumbling world under the rule of Eggman that, no matter what he did, he will never stop fighting, and he wasn't going to be knocked down by hopelessness
• Sonic is viewed as a symbol of hope by many (^)
• Sonic loves to tell stories of his adventures to children. It was also one of the things he looked forward to during the first war (aka The Robian War)
• Sonic's quills are sharp enough to pierce metal
• Sonic is an adrenaline junkie
• When Sonic was showing Knuckles around the city for the first time, he recorded the experience. Sonic will never forget the look of curiosity and wonder on Knuckles' face
• Sonic loves to record all sorts of moments, but his favorites by far are the first-timers, like bringing Tails to his first amusement park, or secretly recording Shadow trying chili dogs for the first time, or even Silver's first time seeing rain!
• Sonic doesn't remember the events of 06
• Sonic doesn't do it as often as he used to when he was younger but he does sometimes throw concerts with his siblings
• While raising Tails, Sonic hired Vector (who would be 13 at the time) to find info on Tails parents, Sonic doesn't hear back from him until a year later (Sonic thought he ran off with the money) where he's told that Tails' dad is nothing but scrap metal and his mom was killed during the Robian War, he was also told that Tails name was Miles Prower, Sonic thanked him and paid him extra for his troubles
• During the Robian War, after Sonic was on his own, he didn't meet a lot of hedgehogs, so whenever he had a health problem, he didn't go to the doctor (mostly because the doctor at the hideout didn't know how to take care of hedgehogs and would get frustrated with Sonic) instead he would learn to take care of his health by himself, this has lead to poor decision making
• Growing up wasn't easy, especially when the people around you are afraid of getting hurt by your quills, so when Sonic had his quills bent and pushed into his back during a fight, he couldn't ask someone to help remove them, so he would simply find a waterfall, sit under it and let the water dislodge the quills, afterward he'd go home and shower
• Sonic knows how to make flower crowns thanks to Cream
• Sonic likes to visit the Chao Garden, he also has a chao he calls Indigo
• During a new years party when Sonic was 9, he introduced Mighty and Ray to Vector who, then introduced them to Espio and Charmy. Sonic took lots of pictures of them and gave copies to Vector (Charmy was only a few months old while Tails was 2, and Ray would be 5 when this happened)
• Sonic didn't know how smart Tails was until he made a TV out of paperclips at the age of 5
• once, when Sonic was 12, Sonia tried to get him to comb his quills to be more organized. Sonic learned the hard way by having her drag him by his shoes back inside the castle, but not without dragging Manic down with him since he was laughing while Sonia chased Sonic

i know we are on a got hate hiatus so this is a mockery meant as a joke it's not even rage filled. maybe you don't remember this because of how random and utterly hilarious that benjen saved jon snow from.... something... (? i wanna say wights) in s7. like he came back from the dead in s7, had a different hair colour (for some reason his hair was a horrendous red/orange??). so he throws jon on his horse, saves the day, maybe he dies but i'm not sure, and it is never explained what happened to him during the six seasons he was gone and his different hair colour. it's the funniest mystery i've ever witnessed. benjen stark deserved better <3
Firstly, we are never truly on a GOT hate hiatus, even if we’re not openly talking about it as much. Also, Benjen deserves better, present tense. And he’s gonna get that better story, in the books.
IIRC what they did with Benjen was turn him into the Coldhands figure in their version (even though GRRM has explicitly stated that Coldhands isn’t Benjen). Their explanation was like... he got attacked by wights and he was brought back by the singers as half-wight/half-human, and he can’t go south of the Wall so he’s just been hanging out up north since book 1 (apparently never caring to get in contact with anyone in the Watch, not even during the Great Ranging). And then in season 7 during that episode that made even casual show-watchers start to realize how ridiculous the writing was, he turns up at the last second to save Jon after he almost drowned and then he swings a little fireball around at the zombies (sacrificing himself) and sends Jon off on his horse. I don’t remember the hair color change, but it wouldn’t surprise me. They really did like giving the Starks the wrong hair colors.
Now, you’ve prompted me to go on a little rant, because what really pisses me off about that deus ex machina-Benjen moment is that Jon was somehow miraculously okay. So... he goes out on an expedition beyond the Wall (with no hat/scarf/clothing for his head or neck) and they immediately lose all their food and water. Then he’s stuck on an island in the middle of a frozen lake surround by the literal fucking gods of winter who “bring the cold”, so it’s probably sub-zero (Fahrenheit, I’m American) temperatures. Then he fights a battle after having not been eating or drinking water for like at least 12 hours. Then he falls into a frozen lake in multiple layers of heavy fur, somehow he gets out on his own (with his sword in his hand), and then is immediately put on a horse while still in sopping wet clothes and rides off into the cold wind. And then hours later he arrives unconscious on the horse (how exactly was he holding on?).
By the time he gets back to the Wall... excuse me but his organs are failing if they haven’t failed already, and, IIRC (I’m not looking up the scene to rewatch it), he wasn’t shivering when they got him off the horse, which means that his body is no longer trying to regulate his temperature and you’re not going to be able to fix this shit with just some blankets and the magic of wishful thinking. So, unless you’ve got some medieval form of heated IV saline and warm humidified oxygen, HE’S DEAD. VERY, VERY DEAD. Oh, and apparently he suffered no frostbite, not even on his nose or ears. Big shift from the books, where Jeyne Poole gets frostbite on her nose from the escape in the snow. (Also, if you want to try and make the excuse of “well maybe the power of R’hllor made him cold-resistant” or whatever… no. It’s not stated or implied that that’s what happened. Post-res Jon in the books may react differently to temperature, but in the show he was presented as just being a revived human with an unaffected body.)
The show is just all-around absolutely ridiculous in the portrayal of injuries, especially since they constantly talked up how much they prided themselves on the “gritty realism”. You’ve Jon getting shot like three times in the back and somehow not getting a punctured lung (and recovering fast enough to lead another ranging beyond the wall before the wildlings arrive from either side). You’ve got Arya getting deeply stabbed multiple times in the stomach and then jumping in a dirty canal (if the blood loss or organ damage doesn’t kill her, the infection definitely will). You’ve got very little or no armor (see: every Jon battle scene) and no appropriate cold-weather clothing. You’ve got Jorah having all the dermis (and hypodermis too, I think) flayed off his entire upper body. You’ve got Jaime somehow surviving getting tackled off a horse into a lake/pond in full battle armor and somehow coming out the other side completely unscathed and un-sunk to the bottom. I never saw 8x5 but weren’t a ton of main characters in KL as it was being burned? And no one felt any effect from the dust and smoke inhalation? The most fantasy-like part of the TV show was everyone’s miraculous plot armor against any sort of bodily harm. Unless, of course, you get stabbed once in the stomach with a dagger when you’re a woman getting put down like a dog, then you bleed out and die in 20 seconds.
The most infuriating thing is that the books are comparatively on a very strong level of realism with injuries. Just using Jon as an example (because he seems to be George’s personal punching bag), he suffers second degree burns from his right forearm to his fingertips, and he has to constantly flex and move his hand to keep the muscles from stiffening up. When he gets shot in the leg an entire chapter revolves around it being treated, and the injury has lasting effects on him, he has to walk with a crutch for weeks. When he gets assassinated, he thinks of himself as only having been “grazed” by Wick’s knife, but blood immediately wells between his fingers when he puts his hand to his neck, and the next moment when he tries to reach for Longclaw he’s suddenly too weak to grasp it. So we can infer that the slash wasn’t just a graze, the knife probably hit his carotid artery.
GRRM puts so much care into making the physical traumas and their consequences realistic, just like he does with the mental trauma of his characters. I know we joke about stuff like “the more she drank the more she shat” but I personally love that GRRM was like “nope, if you drink unclean water it’s not gonna end well for your digestive system”. The show just full on winged it and made different standards for reality wherever and whenever they felt like it, failing to portray physical trauma just as badly as it failed to portray mental trauma.
#i have a really specific pet peeve about medical/injury unrealism in media#like no matter what genre your story is in (fantasy. dystopia. etc) the human body needs to react to everything in the way a human body does#and if what you’re going for is ‘gritty realism’ then it better be fucking realistic#unless there’s a direct clear explanation. like dany hatching the dragons and being fireproof only for that special magical process#and then she ends up getting burned the first time she rides drogon! no fireproof plot armor#ask#anon#anti got#long post#edit: adding these tags#tw gore#tw gore mention#tw injury#tw injury mention#tw medical trauma

This is a Spoiler review, so if you haven’t seen it yet and don’t want spoilers, don’t look. (Also no pictures)
I make it no secret that I am a Sonic the Hedgehog fan. I have been since I got the Genesis as a kid and I have been through its highs and lows. One of its best high has been the first Sonic Movie, where after a terrible redesign they delayed the movie to improve it and got rewarded with being the third highest grossing movie of 2020 (granted, the Pandemic also happened). That movie was also the last one I saw in theaters. So with Sonic 2 coming out, I finally returned to a movie theater to actually see it. That’s right! I still haven’t seen Spiderman: No Way Home!
So I am writing this the day after seeing it. If my scheduling is correct, it’ll be almost two weeks for you guys. So this is your last chance to see it if you don’t want spoilers. But for me, I’m okay with spoilers. Sometimes knowing it in advance will still get you excited to see it. Like for example, I’m pretty sure everyone knew the other two Spider Men were going to be involved but even knowing that I bet it was still great to see them on screen together. But is Sonic 2 worthy of bringing me back to theaters?
The movie begins back on the Mushroom Planet. Robotnik is still alive and using the quill and his equipment, created a big energy beacon to lure someone towards him. Who noticed it? Three lizard men. The Eggman lured them in and defeated them, hoping to use the Ring they used to escape to a more technological place when Knuckles shows up. Wanting to know where he got the quill, Robotnik sees an opportunity to get back to Earth and get revenge on Sonic the Hedgehog.
Sonic, meanwhile, has been secretly trying to be a hero. He even stopped an Armored Truck Robbery. But he also destroyed a city block. And since his disguise was so obvious, Tom warned him that using his powers to try to become a hero isn’t a good idea. Being a Hero isn’t about making yourself look good, it's to care for others (or something like that. It's basically the “great power/great responsibility” bit). So Sonic promises to wait as he is home alone while Tom and Maddie go to Hawaii via ring for her sister’s wedding.
But on night 1 Robotnik arrived and brought Knuckles. Knuckles is proving to be a tough opponent for Sonic as he stops Sonic’s attacks and punches him through things. He also reveals it's not his power that he’s after but the Master Emerald. Sonic looks to be done for until Tails arrives just in time to save Sonic. So Tails' story is he’s from another planet who discovered Sonic after his big Sonic Boom in the first movie. Since then, he’s admired Sonic from afar and basically was watching him like a reality show.
That was until he found out Knuckles was coming for Sonic, so not wanting to see his hero die, found a way to travel to Earth and find him. A thing to point out is they redid the scene from the End Credits of Sonic 1. It goes with my theory that at the time they didn’t think it was going to be that successful even after the Redesign, so they added that scene with Tails and his original Video Game voice actor as a reward for those who helped make Sonic change.
But now that the movie did gangbusters, they made a sequel. I’m glad they kept the voice actor as getting a celebrity kid would just mean future movies would have an older sounding Tails. I also believe they redid that scene in Sonic 2 for the off chance new viewers who haven't seen that scene or the first movie won’t be surprised of a Tails ex Machina showing out of nowhere. Since I’m here, there are definitely more Sonic Scenes than Human scenes (which is good) but the Human Scenes don’t interest me until Sonic is involved so I’m gonna skip them until they connect.
Speaking of humans, at Tom’s Sidekick’s house, they discover the map Longclaw gave him leads to the Master Emerald. A big plus even if you never saw Sonic is they really show how much Longclaw’s sacrifice really means to him as she gets one last scene via Hologram Message. So Sonic, with his new buddy Tails, must travel to Siberia to find the compass that will lead them to the Master Emerald. Meanwhile Robotnik convinces Knuckles of an alliance to “help him” find the Master Emerald. But revealing to the excited (and honestly best addition to the Sonic Mythos in my book) Stone that he plans on betraying the Echidna to get the Master Emerald.
In Siberia, they wear disguises to wait out the snow storm in a bar or something when Tails translator makes things worse. That’s when they discover the truth and plan to throw them in a fire. But the only way to save themselves and the map they forgot is to compete in a battle… A Dance battle. So here’s my criticism of the movie, it seems more kiddy than the last one as Robotnik is more goofy, there are fart jokes and this dance scene replacing the Quicksilver scene of the last movie. Still, they won thanks to Tails hologram and got a place to stay for the night.
Good news, they found the compass. Bad news, thanks to answering a text, Robotnik tracked them and went for the attack. We get a pretty cool Snowboard scene and Knuckles revealing why he’s so adamant on getting the Master Emerald: The attack that took out Longclaw also took out his remaining Tribe. So he is the last Echidna. They make a small connection but Tails trying to save him ruins it. Sonic throws the compass at Tails but Robotnik makes the interception. Tails is hurt and Sonic goes to save him from the avalanche as Robotnik retreats with Knuckles wondering if he made the right choice.
Now to talk about humans. While teasing the Ring Bearer, Tom accidentally gave her the Sonic Ring instead of the wedding ring. With Sonic calling needing help, Tom ruins Rachel’s Wedding by punching the groom and bringing snow to Hawaii. Don’t worry, Rachel is not mad at Tom for long, because the entire wedding was a trap to get to Sonic. GUN used Project Catfish to set up an ambush to capture Sonic and Tails and locked up Tom for trying to release them. With Maddie wanting to free her family and Rachel looking for revenge on her hubby to be, they use Tails tech to beat GUN.
Of the humans on Sonic Side, Rachel is my favorite as her wanting to beat up her fiance for lying to her all this time only for him to take a taser shot for her made her fun to watch. Luckily for them the Master Emerald location is close to Hawaii, but Sonic realizing people got hurt because he failed to step up has him running across the ocean to reach the island. Knuckles and Eggman reached it first and Robotnik was about to go for the backstab until Sonic arrived. The two did an impressive fight but Robotnik grabs the Master Emerald and becomes all powerful.
Thanks to a mutual saving, Knuckles becomes Sonic’s friend and with Tails arriving with the future Tornado, go to follow Robotnik to Green Hills. With the Power of the Master Emerald, he uses the metal around him (that GUN accidentally provided) to create what happens when you combine the Death Egg Robot with MCU Hulkbuster’s design. The Trio arrives and tries to stop him but apart the Machine is virtually unstoppable. But with the Real SuperPower of Teamwork (don’t worry, that isn’t a line in the movie), they manage to get the Master Emerald out of Robotnik.
Since Sonic was the distraction, he is hurt and by the time he gets to the Master Emerald, it breaks freeing the Seven Chaos Emeralds that was used to make it. Seemingly hopeless with Tom and Maddie by his side, Sonic goes Super Sonic and stops the Death Egg Robot from crushing him, then defeating Robotnik sending him to his presumed death. Knuckles worried that with such power, the Sonic they knew is no longer there. But a double summon of Chili Dogs proves he’s still Sonic.
Letting the Power go because he isn’t ready for it, and with Knuckles restoring the Master Emerald (but without the Chaos Emeralds), the three of them vow to be its guardians. It ends with them playing baseball and then going out for Ice Cream with Sonic calling Tom his dad. But after the credits, they couldn’t find Robotnik’s Body. We see Stone in disguise, so Robotnik likely did as well. But they also found a project 50 years in the making: Project Shadow.
While I won’t say this movie is as good as the first, I still found it enjoyable. Plenty of stuff to have a Sonic fan happy but enough content that I believe someone who isn’t into the Sonic series can still enjoy it. The emotional arc of Sonic, the growing friendship with Tails, the turn to the good side of Knuckles, there’s a lot to enjoy. And they made Knuckles naivety be because he’s a fish out of water instead of just being dumb. There are a lot of enjoyable scenes with the Sonic cast and the Humans aren’t so bad when they’re with the rest of the Sonic Cast.
So if you’re curious, I do hope you see it. There are a bunch of jokes I didn’t mention that were pretty funny. But I will admit it does feel like it was cut in some places. Still, I think you can have a good time with it.

So, about the movie...
At long last, a week after it came out, I was finally able to see the Sonic movie. The Daytona 500 being held across the street from my favorite theater and conflicting work schedules had been keeping me away, but now I’ve finally seen it. And it was...
Decent!
Which is way, way, way, way, way better than a movie with this awful premise has any right being. That’s for damn sure. I enjoyed my time at the theater. I don’t know how they did it, but they did it. If you like Sonic and haven’t already seen it, you will probably get a kick out of this film. If you don’t like Sonic (or Jim Carrey), there is very little in this movie for you
Okay, now that that’s out of the way, it’s time to break that whole movie down. This will contain full spoilers for the Sonic movie
This movie kinda gave me deja vu because it’s set up so similarly to the Bumblebee movie. Both open with a slavishly faithful CGI sequence on another planet to ensure long time fans that the creative team gives a shit, but a conflict sends the title character to Earth. There, they form an emotional bond with the human lead as they’re pursued by the bad guys, who are working with the US government and tracking the energy signature of the title character. This setup worked extremely well for Bumblebee, because it’s so similar to the usual plot of Transformers. For Sonic, it was... a mixed bag. But it worked better than I expected
(This shot does not happen in the movie.)
That opening though, huh? Green Hill Zone looked great, and I was pleasantly surprised to see they did, in fact, use the Hyper Potions track from Sonic Mania in the actual film. (The piano rendition of the Green Hill theme used later was also lovely.) Longclaw was also interesting. I’ve seen one person bring up all the bird-themed ruins in Sonic 1 and 2 as a possible source of inspiration for the character, and I think that’s a valid take. And man, the echidnas! I wasn’t expecting that AT ALL. I guess that was probably the Knuckles Clan or something? I would never, ever picture them being alive during Sonic’s lifetime, but like... I guess Knuckles had to come from somewhere, right? If they do another movie with Knuckles, will the rest of his kind have died out?
Sadly, though, this sequence felt like it was over in a heartbeat. We barely see Sonic’s life on his home planet, and we’re expected to feel emotional over Longclaw’s sacrifice when she only gets like three lines before Sonic is sent to Earth. This is a common theme with the film--it goes for these big emotional beats that it just does not earn with its rapid fire pacing
Anyway, then we fast forward and Sonic’s a teen. This is actually kind of an interesting one if you’re constantly neck deep in Sonic Character Analysis like me, because it’s a pretty different take on the character. It’s hard to give them credit for doing something somewhat fresh with the character, though, because like... how much of that was intentional, and how much was just Hollywood writers trying to squeeze a generic action-adventure movie out of Sonic? (Honestly, it’s probably mostly the latter.)
The closest other piece of Sonic media to the movie would probably be Sonic X, a story in which Sonic isn’t really the protagonist. The Sonic of the anime is fairly emotionally distant. He cares deeply about his friends, and does nice things for them, but he’s totally fine with running off on his own for extended lengths of time, and he doesn’t really talk about his feelings. He’s not the character the audience is meant to sympathize with, but is instead this cool older kid who Chris wants to impress. This is pretty much in line with how Sega likes to depict the character. He cares about his friends, but he’s also cool with being a loner. It feels like he only runs into them incidentally, usually when Eggman is causing trouble, and then when the crisis of the week is taken care of he’s back to going on his own adventures. There’s a reason why one of his catchphrases is “long time no see”
The Sonic of the movie is the polar opposite. His main conflict is that he’s lonely and desperately seeks friendship. He’s also an overly-eager, extremely earnest goober. He literally flosses twice. (Which I loved.) I’ve seen him compared to Silver, and honestly, that’s not a bad comparison. I did like it, though! I don’t mind Sonic being a more emotionally open character, like he was in a lot of older Western media. I mean, he cried in like the second or third episode of SatAM
It’s just that, like many things in the movie, it feels less like a deliberate creative choice and more like a logical string of decisions to make when writing a generic action-adventure film for general audiences. Sonic’s the only one of his kind on Earth, so of course he’d be lonely. He has to have some sort of arc for audiences to connect with him, and if he’s gotta be accompanied by James Marsden for the whole movie, well, his arc’s gotta be about them becoming friends
I’ve gotta say, though: Ben Schwartz is great as Sonic. As much as I like Roger Craig Smith, I wouldn’t complain if he became the new main voice of the character. And thanks to the redesign, he looked great. I can’t imagine how nightmarish this movie would’ve been if Sonic wasn’t cute
My main fear with this movie, though, was that Sonic wouldn’t really be the protagonist. As a fan of Transformers, I know all too well that the cost of doing a full CGI character usually means that said character can’t really be the star of the film. Optimus and Bumblebee aren’t the stars of the Transformers movies--they’re supporting characters who are primarily present for the sake of the action scenes. The humans are the real stars in those movies, and the robots are barely even characters. I was terrified that Sonic would be the same, with the actual character I paid to see taking a backseat to James Marsden The Cop
I’m not quite sure if they struck the right balance there, but they did better than I worried they would. Sonic is central enough to the film and gets enough screentime that you can easily say he’s the protagonist. BUT there is absolutely too much of Tom and his family. The human cast is fine, the performances are fine, and there were a few good jokes, but every time the movie tried to get me to care about Tom’s life I was bored out of my mind. It’s just so trite and passionless. The other characters barely felt fleshed out at all, including Tom’s girlfriend (wife?) and Agent Stone. The little girl who gives Sonic the shoes had some cute moments, though
I do, however, love the part in which James Marsden is walking around in a San Francisco t-shirt, to remind us that he’s planning on moving to San Francisco... which then becomes the excuse for Sonic to think about San Francisco and accidentally send his warp rings there, which becomes the excuse for the buddy road trip aspect of the film. And as much as that was a focus of the marketing, the actual road trip part is like... maybe 20 minutes of the movie? There’s like three scenes with Sonic and Tom on the road and then they’re in San Francisco for act 3. The movie tries to act like they’ve formed this deep bond and I just did not give a shit. I don’t care about the cop. All Cops Are Bastards, and that absolutely includes Tom, whose dream in life is to join the extremely corrupt San Francisco PD
The whole excuse for Sonic having to sit in the passenger seat of a car going the speed limit for a good chunk of the movie is also, just. Stupid. If he doesn’t know where San Francisco is and time is of the essence, just... give him a map?
And then there’s Jim Carrey. I was worried about this one. The previews tended to highlight his most Jim Carrey Being Wacky moments, and as fond as I am of movies like The Truman Show and Bruce Almighty, that’s just. That’s not Robotnik. I was pleasantly surprised by the actual movie, though! I thought he was pretty good. I’m not sure what incarnation of Eggman I’d most compare him to, but like... it was close enough, and he was entertaining enough. I’d pay to go see another movie with him as Robotnik. Sure. (Especially with how he was looking at the end of the film.)
There were some other little interesting tidbits here with Eggman, although again, a lot of that is less “let’s do a new take on Eggman” and more “let’s do a marketable movie with Eggman in it, which requires us to explain some stuff.” Like him straight up just being a normal human from Earth, with none of the confusion present in the current “two worlds” canon of the games. Or him apparently being an orphan who was bullied in school, and who trusts machines more than other humans. It’s a safe way to depict the character in a Hollywood movie, but I thought it worked
The way they got to his nickname was kind of funny, though. Like, obviously they didn’t put Jim Carrey in a fat suit, and thank god for that. So instead of mocking his weight, the nickname is derived from the egg-shaped robots he uses. Which made sense, I guess. It at least felt logical for this incarnation of Sonic, who had annoyingly been calling Tom “Donut Lord” the whole movie, to make up the nickname “Eggman.” (Said robots, by the way, were a weak point of the movie to me. They just didn’t have that Eggman whimsy and felt very safe and very Hollywood. Honestly, though, if they had just made Robotnik’s ship grey and slapped some hazard stripes on it, it’d probably be fine.)
As a whole, I thought the humor of the movie was... okay. Sonic had a lot of good moments thanks to Schwartz’s great performance, as did Robotnik. There were just so many weird lines, like James Marsden telling Robotnik that he was breast fed, or the agonizingly long child trafficking joke with Sonic in the duffel bag. Stuff like that
The action was great, though. They definitely owe a lot to the Quicksilver scene in that one X-men movie (I forget the one), but they had a lot of fun with Sonic’s powers and it felt extremely true to the character. Seeing him do one of his Smash poses during the San Francisco fight was great. The action scenes were an absolute delight
And then the ending. Oh, that ending
So, I had already heard that Tails shows up in the stinger before I saw the film. And when I heard that, I expected it to be like, the classic Tails origin story. Maybe Sonic would return to his planet, and run into this precocious kid who decides to follow him around... but no! Not at all! Tails is already the Tails we know and love. He’s already an inventor, he’s already tracking down Sonic. I’m shocked that Sonic actually stayed with Tom instead of running off to have new adventures, but hopefully this is a sign that more characters will be brought into the fray if they make a sequel
And boy, they better make that damn sequel. This movie had a great opening weekend and a positive reception. They have no excuse not to. GIVE US SONIC AND TAILS GOING ON AN ADVENTURE
Other stray thoughts
Holy shit they put Sanic in the movie
The Sega logo animation meant that Kiryu from Yakuza was in this movie for a few seconds
The pixel art credits sequence, which featured both the Sonic 2 special stage and Get Blue Spheres as well as the Eggman logo screens from the Studiopolis Zone boss, was cute
The Saturn logo could be seen on the diagram of the other habitable planets
Robotnik had a label for “Badniks” on his circuit breaker. I wonder if the drones in the movie are intended to be Badniks, or if we’ll see actual ones if a sequel gets made
Also, was it implied that Robotnik committed war crimes for the US government
One of the government guys who I think only got one line was played by Garry Chalk and as such sounded exactly like Optimus Primal
I can’t tell if Sonic getting a red race car bed was an intentional shout out to the Archie comics or if it’s just a coincidence, but I loved it
A dude about my age wearing a Sonic Mania t-shirt literally stood up and clutched his head in shock when Tails showed up
After the movie a very excited kid got his mom to take his photo with the Sonic display in the lobby. Afterwards he was so excited that he flossed
I can’t believe they talked about Olive Garden so much

Please let me know what you think, the love always encourages me to write more ;) Love you all, please enjoy!
Warnings: none
♡♡♡
If you've ever had amnesia, you'd know that things seem very quick.
Little flashbacks of what you're guessing to be your backstory come back in little spurts that never last long enough and are gone too soon. They leave huge, gaping holes in your background information from what your favorite color is to who your parents were. Try your story on for size.
You were Y/n Wachowski. A sassy, quick-witted teenage girl with a love for speed and a sharp tongue. Parents? Unknown. Distant relatives? Undiscovered. Hometown? Who the fuck knows. You were sent to live with the Wachowski's as your permanent foster parents after you were discovered wandering around the woods by a couple of hikers. They said that they found you wearing a ripped and dirty jumpsuit with pastel colors that looked like it was ten times smaller than your size. When they had tried to confront you, it was almost as if you couldn't hear them, your mouth open and unspeaking. Eyes wandering, glossy and unseeing.
You couldn't remember much about your past. Most of the time it was like looking at a blank sheet of paper, ready to get into the printer but it's out of ink. After being diagnosed with a concussion and severe amnesia, you were seen as unfit to take care of yourself, so that was how you ended up with the Wachowskis. But just because you were lucky enough to have loving and patient foster parents didn't mean that you had an answer to every question they asked. You had no idea what your favorite color was, what you liked to do in your free time, or even if you were a night owl.
It was like you didn't even remember who you were. Like you had just been born, only you weren't a baby and were instead a teenager. It got incredibly lonely being a child with no memories, and the kids at school found you very creepy. But it was okay. Tom and Maddie made sure to give you as much love as was humanly possible, and when the bullying at school got to the point where they would follow you home, they switched you to homeschooling.
It appeared that you not only had no existing memories of your past, but you also had barely any idea how things on earth worked. Whenever someone mentioned examinations, vaccines, bucket lists, and even governmental agencies, you had no clue what they were talking about.
Not everyone was as patient as Tom and Maddie were, unfortunately. Most people would assume that you were kidding when you asked them what a protractor was or why people ride animals. It all seemed so strange and new to you, like Tarzan when he was visiting the human world and not the ape land he was familiar with. But out of it all, there was one thing that you became absolutely fascinated with.
Cars.
The faster, the better. You seemed to have an unchecked need for speed that tickled at your mind every time you got behind the wheel. Whenever Tom allowed it, you'd take the truck or his old squad motorcycle out for a spin in the abandoned corn fields where you could do as many tricks as you wanted without putting anyone else in danger. One of your favorites was driving backwards.
It's during one of those days where our story finally begins. The Montana sun was high up in the sky, beating down its scorching rays onto the untouched pavement. A flock of birds fled for the telephone polls in an attempt to escape from the ever increasing sound of revving coming from the abandoned corn field near Crazy Carl's traps for the supposed "Blue Devil." In the midst of the dead and crusty corn stalks, there sat a young girl on a very old squad motorcycle. Her hair fluttered gently in the slight breeze running through the air, a pair of sunglasses perched delicately atop her nose in the absence of a helmet. Before her stood a makeshift riser composed of some old wooden slabs she had "borrowed" from an old tree house a little ways south. A smirk played across her lips as she kicked up the bike's kickstand and revved the engine.
"Alright, Y/n, if you make this jump, you'll be the most famous girl in Green Hills…" Her words got lost in the wind as she took a deep breath and began to ride towards the jump, her speed increasing with every passing second. The distance began to decrease, her growing closer and closer until an abnormal electric blue blur zipped past her. Startled, she swerved, momentarily losing control of her bike as she slowed to a stop, planting her boots firmly on the ground. Chest heaving, she flipped her sunglasses up onto her forehead and slipped off of the bike, looking around the empty field to see if she hit anything.
What was that? She wondered.
Unbeknownst to her, a couple feet away from her, hidden deep within some dehydrated bushes was a royal blue hedgehog. He had been on his way back to his cave after taking a turtle for a little joy ride down the interstate when he spotted his favorite human on earth, Star Chaser. She was the most amazing girl he had ever seen, and lived with Donut Lord and Pretzel Lady. He would make it a priority to hang out with her every time she was out practicing her racing tricks, a dopey grin spreading on his face every time he saw her ecstatic smile. She just never knew he was there.
More than anything, he wished that he could get to hang out with her just once. Just for one day, spent full of speeding down the empty country roads and flying over makeshift jumps and laughing about the funny faces they made from the wind hitting their skin. But he knew better. He had to stay hidden, just like Longclaw said. Never stop running, and always stay hidden… alone.
There was something about her that just drew him to her, something familiar. He watched with caution as Star Chaser searched the field a bit more, her footfalls making satisfying crunching sounds on the long gone plants. Her beautiful e/c eyes searched the grounds before her for whatever had interrupted her practice. Finally, after she was satisfied with not having hit anything, she got back onto the cycle, flipped her sunglasses back on, and zipped away, leaving a trail of smoky exhaust in her wake.
The blue hedgehog zoomed back to his cave himself, dodging trees and bushes with expertise. The whole time he ran, he couldn't prevent his mind from wondering what life might be like if he were somehow able to live alongside the humans. If he could have a conversation with Star Chaser that didn't exist in his imagination, to maybe even discover why she seemed so familiar. What would life be like if he didn't have to hide?
♡♡♡
Just when things finally start getting familiar, the concept of moving decides to rear its ugly head in. Y/n had found out that her foster dad got a promotion, a job in another city with a higher ranking and a wider variety of donut holes to snack on. That meant that they were going to have to leave Green Hills.
But, knowing her, she shoved the grief and frustration so far down inside her until it became nonexistent. Maddie had left on a trip to see her sister, leaving Y/n and Tom alone. They had had a freak power outage the night before, leaving Tom a bit on edge. His phone kept ringing off the hook as his coworker was just a bit dependent on him, and had no idea if he should just ignore the 911 phone calls or pick them up.
“Remind me to drive by the library tomorrow,” Y/n set down her latest novel on the counter by the car keys. She watched as Tom stole a bit of frosting off of the cake and scrunched up her nose at the lack of sanitation. “I need to return this before we get fined.”
Tom nodded just as his phone began ringing. He held up a finger to his daughter and leaned against the counter, lifting up the phone to his ear as he began to talk to his wife. Y/n turned to the fridge and was trying to decide whether or not she was hungry or just bored as she did her best to not listen to them talking about the move. Just as she was about to reach for the watermelon, a loud clattering noise came from outside. Tom and Y/n exchanged an alarmed glance and quickly shuffled over to the window, childishly trying to shove each other out of the way so they could get a good look.
“Shit,” Y/n swore as she took in the knocked over trash bins sitting next to the garage.
“Watch your potty mouth,” Tom scolded, but a smile still stayed on his lips. “The racoons are back.” Y/n watched as he quickly turned towards one of the junk drawers and pulled out Maddie’s bear tranquilizer gun. She snorted.
“You better not be using my tranquilizer gun,” she heard Maddie’s voice say over the speaker. “That’s for bears.”
“Good,” Tom grinned as he loaded up the machine. “Now I know it’ll work. Y/n, stay inside.” Y/n scoffed as he hung up the phone and opened up the back door. Yes, of course she was going to stay safely inside like a crappy sidekick and miss the potential action of scaring trash pandas half to death. Grabbing an extra flashlight, she raced out after her dad to see him pressed up against the side of the shed, holding the gun and flashlight near his face. He jumped once she saddled up next to him, putting her flashlight in front of her like her own makeshift gun.
“I thought I told you to stay inside,” He narrowed his brows. To his dismay, Y/n only shrugged.
“You did. I didn’t listen,” she grinned, making it obvious that he had no other choice than to let her stay. He sighed, but nevertheless nodded. On a quick countdown from three, the two burst into the shed, waving their flashlights around like mad men.
“Green Hills PD, put your paws up!” Tom hollered. Y/n slowly made her way out from behind him, flashing her light around the empty room until it finally came to a stop. Her eyes widened in shock and her jaw nearly dropped to the floor as she tried to make sense of what exactly she was looking at. An electric blue creature wearing white gloves and tennis shoes stood before them, holding what looked like a gold wedding ring between his forefinger and thumb. She couldn’t tell what was stranger: the fact that he existed or the fact that he seemed oddly familiar. The creature’s green eyes flashed from hers to her father’s before he let out a small, nervous chuckle.
“Uhh, meow?”
And then, Tom screamed. His fear and the sudden introduction of the loud noise caused Y/n to scream, too, which finally led to the little blue creature screaming. But the longer Y/n stared at it, the more she began to experience a slight hint of deja vu. She couldn’t seem to shake the feeling that she had seen this thing before.
“Wait,” she whispered, barely loud enough for her dad to hear, but the blue creature’s ears perked up. He turned his attention back to her and the second they locked eyes, the same sense of familiarity began coursing through his veins. After all of those days spent watching her from afar, how did he never notice the e/c eyes? Where had he seen them before?
Unfortunately, Tom just had to go and ruin the moment by pulling the trigger on the tranq gun.
“Dad, no!” Y/n cried, but it was already too late as the dart sank into the blue creature’s thigh. They could only watch as the animal looked down at the needle in his leg and slowly looked back up with a hurt glare.
“Ow,” he whined, his eyes already beginning to lose their concentration. Y/n was about to take a step towards the creature, but Tom wrapped his hand around her arm to stop her. The creature’s eyes floated over Tom’s shirt, zeroing in on the words that littered the old fabric. “San… Fran…sisco?” He muttered. The ring he had been holding on to loosely slipped from his fingers, and began rolling across the floor. As its velocity increased, it began expanding, deying all laws of logic as a portal overlooking the given city appeared. Y/n and Tom’s jaws dropped to the floor as they watched the creature stumble, dropping his little bag through the portal and collapsing onto the ground. Y/n’s heart ached for the poor thing as she fought to get out of her father’s grasp in order to help him.
Within seconds, the portal closed up, eliminating the slight wind that had appeared. “N-No…” The creature whimpered before finally passing out. A thick silence crossed over the three as Tom’s grip on Y/n’s arm loosened, both humans trying to figure out what the heck they just witnessed.
“What the actual fuck?” Y/n breathed.
“Language…”
♡♡♡
“Yes. Let’s shoot the poor thing and then put him in a cage,” Y/n rolled her eyes sarcastically, watching as her father poked the blue creature resting inside of their dog’s old cage. She batted at his hand, and gave him a death glare, but he just sighed.
“Come on, kid, what if he’s an alien?” Tom asked incredulously, turning back to the sleeping creature. He nudged its head with a metal spatula and sighed.
“I don’t know…” Y/n sighed, resting her head on her knuckle. I mean, she had to admit he was kind of… cute. The nostalgia that he was causing was just an added complication. There was something about his entire being that seemed eerily familiar to her, but she couldn’t for the life of her figure out why. Tom slowly withdrew something that had fallen onto the padding; an electric blue quill. The two slowly leaned closer to inspect the object, noting the little blue bolts of electricity that whizzed across its surface. It absolutely fascinated Y/n, while Tom seemed a little more apprehensive. He turned away from the cage and set it down on the counter, running a hand over his face.
“This is nuts,” he whispered. Y/n took the opportunity to get a little closer to the being, scanning his body with careful eyes. She debated reaching through the bars to touch him, but before she had a chance to, his eyes slowly popped open. Her eyes widened and she stayed perfectly still as he pushed himself up to a standing position and made his way to open the cage. Her breath catches in her throat as he finally looks up at her and gives her a small, sheepish smile, stumbling out onto the counter top. Even in the given circumstances, the only thing that the girl can think of is how absolutely adorable he is.
...wait, what?
“Star Chaser?” Y/n quickly turned her attention back to the present and furrowed her brows in confusion. Who was Star Chaser? “Donut Lord?” The blue being slurred, holding on to the cage for support. Tom swiveled around at the sound and scoffed.
“So the Blue Devil can talk. You’re not here to abduct us are you?”
“YOU abducted ME,” the Blue Devil replied defensively, pressing his hand against his chest. Y/n rolled her eyes and stepped between the two, looking the being in the eyes.
“I am very sorry for that-”
“Why are you apologizing to it?!” Tom cried, running his hands through his hair incredulously. Y/n just rolled her eyes.
“I told him to just leave you alone. But, if I may ask, who are you and why were you in our shed?” She finished. Tom facepalmed behind her while the Blue Devil did his best to concentrate his fatigue on the beautiful girl standing before him. Gosh, her eyes were pretty…
“I-I needed a safe place, and Donut Lord’s house was the only place I could think of, Star Chaser!”
“Why does he keep calling me Donut Lord?” Tom asked warily, slowly reaching for the tranq gun. Y/n quickly shot him a glare and he let out an annoyed huff. Even though he was her foster father, they acted like siblings with good-hearted and frequent quarrels.
“Because you talk to donuts,” the Blue Devil explained. “And then eat them when they get out of line.” Y/n snorted, trying her best to contain her laughter by pressing the back of her hand to her mouth. She didn’t notice the small smile that formed on the blue hedgehog’s face as Tom shrugged, nodding his head slightly.
“Fair. Why is she Star Chaser?” The Blue Devil got a distant look on his face, a small, thoughtful smile still lingering on his lips.
“I’ve watched her race out in the fields. It’s amazing how fast she can go. Sometimes I wonder if she’s trying to chase the stars out of the sky…” A soft smile slowly formed on your lips at his words. No one had ever talked about you like that before.
The distant look on his face was suddenly replaced by one with worry. His eyes began frantically glancing around the room, Y/n being able to practically see the alarms going off in his head. “Wait, where are my… Why am I still on earth? Oh no, I lost my rings!”
“Rings?” Y/n furrowed her brows in confusion. Just then, a loud rumbling sound came from outside. It had such an impact that it shook the entire house, startling the chimes that Maddie had hung up above the sink. The three looked around in confusion.
“What’s happening? Is this your mothership?” Tom began panicking, walking briskly around the table towards the window. He jabbed an accusing finger at the nervous hedgehog. “I do NOT want my daughter getting probed.”
“Dad, stop,” Y/n sighed, following him towards the window. “You’re the one who abducted him. Can’t you be just a little bit sentimental?”
“Thanks,” the hedgehog muttered just loud enough for Y/n to hear. She stood next to her foster dad at the window and peered out the glass. A giant grey vehicle that had been passing stopped and began backing up towards their driveway.
“What the hell kind of make is that?” Y/n muttered. The Blue Devil was by their side in a second and was peering through the window too. Once he caught sight of the ginormous lab van, he let out a squeak and pulled the white curtains shut.
“They’re after me!”
“Who’s after you?” Y/n questioned in concern. She got pushed behind Tom as he stood protectively in front of her, eyeing the Blue Devil suspiciously.
“And what does that have to do with us?”
“I don’t have time to explain, but you have to help me!” He pleaded. Y/n felt her heart sink for the creature, her instant gut feeling telling her that they had to help him. He was in danger, albeit he was apparently a runaway. Unfortunately, Tom had different ideas as he furiously shook his head.
“No, we don’t!”
“But Dad-”
“Y/n, enough,” Tom ended her protests sternly. He turned back to the blue hedgehog and furrowed his brows, wondering what reason he could possibly have that would need them to help him. “Why should we help you?”
“Well, my legs, which normally would be classified as legal weapons, feel like spaghetti. I need your help, please! It’s life or death.” The Blue Devil’s green eyes pleaded to Tom. Y/n slowly made her way out from behind her dad and glanced down at him. He knew exactly what to say in order to get Tom to help him, didn’t he? It was almost as if he had been there all of those times when Tom was wishing for someone to come to him in their time of need. His facade crumbled and he caved in almost instantly.
“Alright, fine. Y/n, take him up to the attic. I’ll take a look at what’s going on outside.” Tom ordered. Y/n nodded and motioned for the blue hedgehog to follow her. They quickly scampered towards the stairs, and as they began to walk quietly up the flights, Y/n noticed two things. One, Crazy Carl was right after all. The little “Blue Devil” was a lot larger than she had expected him to be, measuring up to be about half of her height. And two, the thing was having a horrific time walking. With a strangely racing heart, Y/n slowed down her pace and offered her hand to the being. He gave her a small smile and accepted it, wrapping his gloved hand around her own.
“My actual name is Y/n, by the way,” she finally spoke in an attempt to break the hurried silence. “But I like Star Chaser better.” He smiled beside her, trying to figure out why the girl before him seemed so familiar.
“I just thought it suited you. My name’s Sonic. Sonic the Hedgehog.”
“I knew you weren’t an alien,” Y/n said as she let go of his hand to pull down the ladder. She picked the hedgehog up and set him down gently inside the attic. His name kept ringing throughout her head on an endless loop, like it was supposed to bring back some big part of her life, but it always came back empty. She gave him a small smile and was about to head back down when he stopped her.
“Wait,” his dreamy green eyes were full of concern as he looked straight into Y/n’s. “Be careful.”
Y/n appreciated how genuinely concerned he was for her safety. It was a beautiful gulp of fresh air amidst all of the others who thought she was crazy or weird. At least his sincerity made the fact that he had been basically stalking her and her family for a while now a little bit less creepy. Y/n gave him a reassuring smile and closed the attic door, racing all the way back down to the main floor where she skidded to a halt by the door.
There was Tom, with some very strange looking man sporting a signature Man with the Bowler Hat mustache standing in the Y/n slowly approached her dad and watched as the man turned his attention towards her.
“Oh, I didn’t realize you had a daughter,” the man smiled creepily, sending shivers down her spine. She scrunched her nose as Tom wrapped his arm around her shoulder protectively.
“I have a name,” she raised her brows skeptically. “Y/n.”
At the sound of her name, the man got a shocked look on his face, his eyes widening to the size of saucers as he stared intensely at her. Tom and Y/n exchanged confused glances before the man quickly snapped back into reality.
“Y/n…” he repeated. “Interesting. Anyways, where was I? Oh, yes,” he suddenly propelled himself towards Tom, becoming very uncomfortably close to his face. Y/n slowly sank into her father’s arm in order to back away from the strange man. “I was spitting out formulas while you were still spitting up formula.”
“I was breastfed, actually,” Tom responded, mildly weirded out. Y/n’s face contorted in disgust. What the hell was this conversation?
“Nice,” he nodded. “Rub that in my orphan face.”
“Okay,” Y/n spoke up, finally having enough as she pushed the two apart. “Listen, I have no idea who you are and why you are here, but I think you should be leaving.”
“Ooh, fiesty one,” the man nodded, narrowing his eyebrows at you to the point that the folds on his forehead nearly overlapped one another. “Doctor Robotnik, I-”
A sudden thump sounded from the kitchen, startling the man enough to make him shut up. Tom and Y/n froze, running through every possible excuse in their minds as to what that could have been that wasn’t Sonic. Y/n turned to Robotnik and offered him the best sheepish smile she could muster.
“Um… Racoons?”
Robotnik gave her a fake smile and shouldered his way into the house. Y/n and Tom scrambled to follow him, praying to god that their little blue friend wasn’t sitting on the kitchen counter. Thankfully, once they reached the kitchen, they were greeted with a friendly racoon, shoveling handfuls of celebratory cake into its mouth. Y/n breathed a small sigh of relief through her mouth.
“See? Racoons.” Tom spoke defiantly, placing his hands on his hips. Y/n began to search the room quietly for any sign of Sonic while Robotnik was preparing to leave. They had almost gotten him out the door when he stopped and backtracked. In confusion, Y/n and Tom followed his gaze and their hearts stopped.
He slowly held up the lone electric blue quill for all to see.
“Looks like I was right,” a shit-eating grin formed on his face. “Note the lack of surprise.” He pointed to his monotone expression and Y/n could already tell that she fucking hated him. She slowly began to back away from him when a floating egg shaped orb harnessing a bright red laser became very interested in Tom. Y/n’s heart raced, back growing tense as she began to hesitantly back away until Robotnik gave her a warning glare.
She wasn’t going anywhere.
“So, let’s try this again. Where. Is. It?”
“Look, man, leave her out of this. We have no idea what ‘it’ is,” Tom exclaimed, beginning to hold his hands up in surrender. Robonik simply shook his head and pushed some buttons on the gloves that he was wearing.
“I hate liars. You have five seconds to tell me where it is. Five… Four…” He began to count down, Y/n only being able to watch in horror as the white orb came ever closer to her father, the menacing light flashing. Daring someone to challenge it. Tom stared, his facade crumbling with every second that was counted down, trying desperately to find a way out. Things were looking to death when a sudden electric blue blur shot out from behind the counter and stood in front of Y/n, hands outspread in protection.
“Wait!” Sonic cried. “Don’t hurt them!”
Y/n looked down at the little hedgehog in shock, and was startled when Robotnik let out the most girlish scream anyone had ever heard come from the pipes of a man. Then Tom punched him in the face.
“Yes, go Dad!” Y/n whooped as the Doctor crumpled onto the floor, unconscious. Their victory was short lived, however, as the second she finished talking, she was dragged behind the counter by Sonic to avoid getting hit in the face by a laser beam. The three watched in horror as the Wachowski’s custom designed kitchen became destroyed by the angry red bots, shooting around with no instructions as their master was now taking a nap on the floor. Before Y/n even had the chance to ask what they should do, they noticed that Sonic was already missing. Looking frantically around the room, Tom motioned up to one of the kitchen cupboards, and sure enough, there was Sonic preparing to jump onto one of the bots that was probably scanning for their heat signatures or something equally significant. The two shook their heads rapidly, but Sonic simply gave them one of the most adorable sassy nods Y/n had ever seen. He leapt onto the robot, trying desperately to smack it as it spun around like a horse without a head.
“This-was a… horrible idea!” Sonic screamed before he got flung off the robot, sailing through the air, and landing straight into Y/n’s arms. He offered her a sheepish smile, and Y/n rolled her eyes, a smile still playing across her lips. She set him down just in time to see her dad knock the bot out with a frying pan. It careened to a halt and collapsed onto the ground.
“Alright,” Y/n nodded, kicking it once with the scuff of her shoe for good measure. “Shall we get out of here?”
“Yes, please.”
♡♡♡
The three runaways were able to pull out of the driveway just as a bunch of other Men in Black vans were pulling up to the house. Tom sat behind the wheel while Sonic sported a shotgun, and Y/n crouched in the middle of the backseat with no seatbelt. Because this was living on the dark side, and on the dark side, we don’t wear seatbelts.
“Okay, so now that we aren’t running from scary doctors, what the hell is going on here?” Y/n asked, leaning forward on the console and resting her head in her hand as she turned to Sonic. He leaned his head back against the seat and sighed.
“Well, I just might have been the reason for that big power explosion… and now people after me. To make things worse, I lost my rings to a place that I’ve only ever seen on your dad’s skin tight T-shirt, and I have to make it to the Mushroom Planet or else I’m putting everyone here in danger.” He finally took in a deep gulp of air after pulling out that whole explanation in one breath. Y/n furrowed her brows in concern.
“Mushroom Planet?” Tom asked, his lips pressing into a firm line.
“You must have lost them in San Francisco,” Y/n said. Suddenly, Tom jerked the wheel to the right and pulled off to the side of the road, unlocking the doors in the process.
“Alright, get out.” Y/n and Sonic stared at him in confusion.
“I’m sorry, what?” Sonic narrowed his eyes slightly. Tom leaned forwards and opened the passenger side door for him, running a hand down his face.
“Look, this is the worst time for me to be getting into trouble with the law and my daughter doesn’t really need a track record. So, you can go off and have good luck with finding your weird little Mushroom Planet. I’ll hopefully wake up in a hospital room soon with a successful colonoscopy and a happy, totally sane teenage daughter, so goodbye.”
“What? Dad!” Y/n started to object, her blood boiling in irritation at his insensitivity. Sonic shook his head and gave her a half-hearted smile as he slipped out of the car.
“It’s okay, Y/n. Goodbye, I guess…” But instead of leaving, he just stood there. Staring. Y/n turns to stare at her father too to double the effect.
“Why aren’t you leaving?” He groaned in frustration.
“How the hell is he supposed to know where San Francisco is?” Y/n laughs, and Tom sighs in defeat, knowing that she’s right. He gives her a half-assed glare, but as usual she was refusing to back down. Sonic doesn’t notice the small smile forming on his own lips, his appreciation for this strangely familiar girl increasing with every second he spent with her.
“It’s West. Straight shot.” Tom finally tells him. Sonic nods.
“Okay. West. Cool. Cool, I’m totally cool with saying goodbye right now,” he exaggerates, swirling his gloved hands around with the hurt clearly evident on his face.
“I’m not,” Y/n grumbles, pressing her cheek against the rough leather of the driver’s seat. Before anyone could say another word, Sonic shot off in the given direction faster than the speed of sound. Y/n’s jaw drops open along with Tom’s as they look down at the spot where he once was.
“H-holy shit,” Y/n stuttered.
“D-did he just-” Tom didn’t even get to finish the sentence before Sonic came back, only this time soaking wet. He was sporting a nice fish on his head and a bunch of seaweed hanging on to his quills, which accented his sarcastic expression perfectly. Y/n tried to stifle her laughter by pouting and turning to her father as he rolled his eyes.
“So, as I crashed into the cold, dark Pacific,” Sonic began, sending a wink in Y/n’s direction. “I noticed a couple things. A, I have no idea where I’m going. B, salt water stings. And C, I shouldn’t even be on this planet right now but I am. Why? Because you shot me.” Sonic’s eyes narrowed.
“I know,” Tom sighed, turning back to the road.
“You shot me!”
“Okay, you don’t need to rub it in,” he sniffed, glancing at Y/n out of the corner of his eye. “She was there too…”
“She didn’t shoot me,” Sonic stood up for her. Y/n gave him a kind smile as he began listing off characteristics on his gloved fingers. “I’m wet, I’m cold, there’s a fish on my head, and clearly I’m not going to be able to do this on my own!” Once he finished, Y/n slowly reached out to him and pushed the fish off his head, watching as it flopped about helplessly on the ground.
“You do owe it to him,” she subtly pressed, leaning back once again in her seat. Tom stayed silent for a moment, staring firmly at the little blue hedgehog for what seemed like forever. Finally he caved and started the ignition once again.
“Fine. Get in.”
“Really?” Sonic and Y/n chimed in hopeful unison. “You’re going to help me?” He shook out his fur at such a high speed that once he finished, it poofed out like a dramaticized afro. Y/n giggled in her seat, not being able to handle how cute it was. Butterflies began to wander around in her stomach.
“I guess it is sort of my fault,” Tom hesitantly admitted.
“Actually, it’s entirely your fault,” Y/n teased. He gave her a playful shove, but snorted nonetheless. Sonic quickly climbed into the car and slammed the door shut behind him.
“Road trip!” He cheered, looking excitedly around the car. Y/n cheered along with him while still trying to shake the eerily feeling of familiarity. Tom shook his head, squeezing the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white.
“What the hell am I doing with my life?”

After the Storm (Chapter Four)
AO3 Link
“ Shit, ” Tom mutters, the first time he’s sworn in nearly a month.
How had he not realized something was wrong? Sonic had been acting suspicious for a while, long enough for Tom to pick up on. And he’d caught the way the kid deflected questions. He could list off the things he actually knew about him and his life, and most had been stuff from the roadtrip.
- he’s a hedgehog
- he’s from another planet
- he had to leave for some reason
- he’s been on earth (and Green Hills, specifically) for about ten years
- he lived in a cave and had presumably stolen most of what he needed
And everything past that was a mystery. Why he’d left his home planet, what had happened to his parents (did he even have parents??) how he got his powers, what his powers actually entailed ....The kid’s basically a bundle of mysteries.
And that was fine. There was no rush in trying to learn everything. All that mattered was that Sonic was safe and happy and had a home. And yeah, Tom hoped he’d open up eventually, but all the parenting books said to be patient and that was fine by him.
But...he’s reconsidering that, now, especially after Sonic just apparently decided he had to leave with no indication of when or if he’d be returning. Maybe he should have pushed. Maybe he should have made Sonic stop deflecting, made him sit down and have a conversation, explain that this was Sonic’s home and that if something was upsetting him he could talk about it. Maybe in that case Tom wouldn’t be stuck wandering through the forest at 3 am in his pyjamas.
Unfortunately, that’s what he’s doing.
Maddie had managed to stop him from running after Sonic immediately, though she’d had to physically throw shoes and a jacket at him and make him wait long enough for her to grab a flashlight.
“Look for footsteps,” Maddie said, as she dug through the closet. “He just took off, right? He’s probably not thinking about where he’s going.” Tom’s expression must have changed or something, because she followed it up quickly. “He knows these woods well. I’m sure he’s safe, he’s just…” she sighed. “I’m gonna stay here, in case he comes back.”
“I don’t think he’s gonna,” Tom said, rubbing his face with the palm of his hand.
“It’ll be okay.” Maddie handed him a sweater and a flashlight. “Put your shoes on.”
“Right,” Tom said. “Right. Okay.”
“You’ll find him.” Maddie kissed his cheek. “It’s gonna be fine. We got through the whole evil government scientist thing, didn’t we?”
Yeah, the evil government scientist might have been easier. At least then Tom kinda knew what he was doing. Protect the kid, get him to San Francisco, don’t get arrested. Sure, things didn’t work out like he planned - he certainly did not intend on getting as attached as he did - but at least there was a plan.
Right now, he just feels like an idiot wandering through a forest, which is exactly what he is. There are some footsteps, but even with the flashlight they’re hard to see, and Tom’s not even certain they’re Sonic’s.
“Sonic?” he yells out. No response. He wasn’t really expecting one.
He keeps going.
--
Sonic wakes up with the sun, watching the first rays of light poke between the trees. He’d originally found the cave soon after ending up on earth, so it’s been a while since he’s actually had to sleep outside, and overall? Not fun. 0/10. Do not recommend.
Not that he really has a choice. He’ll have to find a new cave, or something like it. Could he sleep in a tree? That might be something to try.
(He thinks of his bed at home, warm and soft and cozy and not full of splinters, and shakes his head.)
It’s a nice day, at least. Warm, but not too hot. The sunrise is beautiful from where he’s standing.
(Maddie would love it.)
He shakes his head again. Not going down that road! Just gonna focus on….on the trees. And the grass. And the flowers. Nature’s nice! He’s fine, out here all alone. Sure, he’s lost, and covered in dirt, and kinda hungry, but...it’s pretty, at least? It’s fine. He’s fine.
He gets up, dusts himself off, and starts walking.
--
He gives up when he passes by the tree he slept against for the third time.
“I’m lost,” he mutters, leaning his head against the bark. His knowledge of the forest was pretty limited, for how long he’s been there. But he’d never really ventured too far - staying by the town always seemed a better option. Easier to find food, easier to keep from getting bored. Out in the middle of nowhere, there’s only berries to eat and squirrels for company, and both are pretty terrible options.
He turns around, so his quills are against the tree, and slides down, collapsing into a heap at the base of the tree. He’s tired, and hungry, and lonely . He’d forgotten how bad being alone was, cause right now there’s nothing more he wants than to squish himself between Tom and Maddie, put on a movie, and pet Ozzie.
But then he remembers last night - Tom, staring at him, confused and afraid, hand singed by powers Sonic doesn’t know how to control. He thinks about Longclaw, shot because of him, probably dead because of him. He thinks about power outages, and evil scientists, and all the many ways he could hurt people without even trying.
It’s not worth it.
( He’s not worth it.)
And yet in the back of his head he can still hear Tom, trying to calm him down, saying his name…
Wait.
Hang on.
Sonic stands up, and immediately crashes into Tom.
“ Sonic! ”
He could run. Couldn’t he? Run like he did last night, run like he’s been doing for his entire life. Run away, again, and give up on the idea of ever getting to be happy.
Run, he thinks, but his legs don’t move.
“Sonic,” Tom says again, kneeling down. He practically falls over, actually. He looks about the same way Sonic feels - covered in dirt, exhausted, sleep deprived - but there’s a relief in his eyes. “Are you okay?”
Yes. No. Maybe? No. Does he know what being okay is? Has he ever been okay? Is that even a real thing? Is -
“Alright, bad question. Just - talk to me, please?”
“Hi,” Sonic says.
Tom tips forward, sitting on his legs. “Good enough.” He takes a deep breath, rubbing his face with his hand. “Please don’t run again?”
Sonic hunches in on himself, shoulders raising. He nods.
“Okay. Okay,” he says again, still rubbing at his face. “Are you hurt? I should’ve brought some water or something,” he says, sighing. Sonic just stares at him, silent, too many words running through his head to actually say any of them. “Sonic? It’s okay, I’m not mad, I just wanna know what’s going on. I just need you to talk to me.”
The words tumble out. “You came for me,” he says, and then starts crying.
“Hey,” Tom says, scooting forward. “Hey, here, c’mon,” and he keeps scooting forward until suddenly his hand is on Sonic’s head and Sonic’s face is buried into his shirt, and it’s definitely covered in dirt but it feels like home . “It’s okay,” he says, along with a bunch of other stuff. Sonic can’t really make out the tone, but he gets the meaning: he’s safe.
“I’m sorry,” he says, except it comes out more like m surree . He thinks Tom might be petting him.
He doesn’t move until he absolutely has to, and even then he’s still nestled close. Tom’s definitely petting him, running his hand through his quills repeatedly.
“I’m sorry,” he says again, clearer this time.
“I’m just glad you’re okay,” Tom says, and then, “ are you okay?”
Sonic’s not sure he has an answer to that. He shrugs.
“Fair enough,” Tom says. “Can you tell me what’s wrong?”
I’m scared of hurting everyone I care about , he thinks, and I’m not sure I actually count as a person, and I don’t even understand why you wanna help so much , but out loud he just repeats himself. “You came for me.”
“Of course. Maddie had to stop me from running outside with no shoes.”
“ Why ? I - I hurt you, I ran off, you barely even know me! I almost got you killed like, five times after knowing you for a day! And then you let me move in with you, even though I - I’m -”
“You are not finishing that sentence,” Tom says, cutting him off. But he doesn’t get it.
“Longclaw said to never stop running. What if - what if it wasn’t to protect me? I don’t want anyone else getting hurt, but all this bad stuff keeps happening and the one thing that’s always there is me . So...so if I’m alone, then everyone else will be safe.” He nods his head once, decisively, daring Tom to argue with his logic. Tom...actually doesn’t seem to have an argument. He’s just staring at Sonic. “I’ll grab my stuff, first, but -”
“No,” Tom says, surprising Sonic. “No, absolutely not, you are not just leaving. I’m not letting you just walk out because you think it’ll protect me. That’s not how this works.” Tom makes a sound - laughter, almost, except without the actual finding-something-funny part. “That’s my job. Literally, my job is to protect people, and even if it wasn’t - that’s a parents job. Not a kid’s.”
“I’m not a kid,” Sonic protests.
“Okay, you’re whatever the word for a baby hedgehog is. Protecting is still my job.”
“Then what’s my job?”
“Your job is very important. Your job is to be happy, and learn about the world, and grow up.”
“But...I managed it before. I was fine on my own! I mean, up until the power outage, but I was doing fine before then! I can do it again, I can -"
“I’m not leaving you alone,” Tom says firmly. "Whatever happens, we'll handle it. You don't need to be on your own before. I'm not letting you get hurt again."
Sonic’s crying again. Or maybe he never actually stopped? Either way, his face is getting very damp, very quickly. Tom’s petting him again, slowly, very carefully.
“What if I mess up again?” Sonic asks, wiping at his face.
“We’ll handle it. No matter what it is, I promise, I’m not gonna leave you alone or kick you out or anything. Just...talk to me, okay? And Maddie. We wanna help you.”
“Okay.” This time, when he wipes his face, it actually stays sorta dry. “Can...can we go home?”
“Of course,” Tom says, standing up and brushing himself off. “Want me to carry you?”
That had never even occurred to Sonic as an option. He nods his head. It takes a moment for them to figure out the logistics of it, but pretty soon he’s nestled up comfortably and Tom has figured out the right angles to avoid quills, and they’re on their way.
Sonic falls asleep about two steps in.

The night before they leave Lys, a storm rages.
It keeps Robb awake most of the night, his pitiful wails cracking like thunder between the flashes of lightning. For most of the night, she holds her restless infant son close to her chest, whispering soft soothing words against his downy dark head of hair. When he does sleep, she sits in the rocking chair Jon had built for her during her pregnancy, one of the only things she's sad to leave behind when they leave in the morning.
"Sansa?"
She turns from where she stands at the window, the rain lashing out against the glass making it hard to see; but over the wind and the rain, she can hear the rage of the sea. "Afraid, is he?" Jon speaks softly, approaching her where she stands with their son, dressed in only a pair of old, wrinkled breeches. "Let me take him, you need sleep." She opens her mouth to protest, but Jon shakes his head, reaching for Robb without hesitation. "I have slept enough, let me care for him now." Robb fits perfectly into the crook of his arm, his weight warm and comforting. "It's going to be a long few days." Their days of travel would take them back across the Narrow Sea, back to the North, back to a place neither of them had thought they would ever see again. "Get some rest, sweetheart." His other hand reaches out to finds its place at the back of her head, drawing her forehead close enough for a kiss.
Only after she's placed a kiss to her son's feather soft hair, she nods, stepping back from where they stand. "This... Is the right thing to do, isn't it?" She asks softly, raising her gaze to meet his just one last time. He can see the fear that reflects in her eyes- not for herself, but for their child. Despite how beloved the Stark's might be, despite how beloved she was to the Northern people, a child born from the coupling of two half siblings would not be welcome. Not anywhere. But... She thinks of Rickon, she thinks of Arya, of Bran... of all the North... She knows the right answer long before Jon gives his solemn nod.
"I'll protect him." Jon says softly, his tone one she's only heard once before; i'll protect you, I promise. "I'll protect you both, Sansa." She smiles, inclining her head as she gazes at the man she loves, the man she knows would give his life in an instant if it meant protecting her. If it meant protecting their son. Without saying it, he understands her true fears, the only thing that could ever keep her from returning North to save her brother and their home. "Go. Rest." Softer still and she nods, leaning in so he might kiss her mouth, soft and slow.
As she drifts off to a dreamless sleep, the storm outside calms, a sign perhaps that their journey might still yet end in peace.

"Did you get it?"
Brienne nods, extending out her hand to drop into Sansa's palm a small vial. Something else that Lys was known for were their potent potions and poisons. Sansa had heard Cersei speak of them, had heard the rumors of those poisoned by the queen. "Thank you," she goes on, making her way across the room to where the single trunk of their belongings sits. Kneeling down, she slips the vial into a pocket on the side, a place where it will be safe on their long journey home.
"What will you use it for?"
Sansa rises up from the floor, turning back to face her new loyal knight; once, she had wished with all of her might to have gone with Brienne, to be saved before she could be sold to Ramsay Bolton. But now... She casts her gaze out the doorway, where Jon stands outside with Robb, giving him one last view of the only home he's only known. Now, she can't imagine her life any differently, despite the pain of the past. "To protect my family." She turns back to Brienne with a slight smile. "I hope I won't have any use of it." Brienne nods again, understanding. "It's time to go, I think." Sansa offers her sworn shield a smile and inclines her head, reaching out to gently touch Brienne's hand. She watches as her face softens, the smile transforming her features, filling them with warmth. "Take me home, Brienne."
Together, they step out into the sunshine.
When she steps out onto the deck, the air is cold.
She makes her way to the railing and wraps her hands around it, the sea stinging cold as it splashes her face, her hands, her skirts. But she does not try to pull herself from the spray, but rather closes her eyes and shivers- she's not felt this feeling in so very long. She opens her eyes and there in the distance, she can see the docks of White Harbor. It has been a long few days but she knows soon they will step foot upon Northern soil and from that moment on, everything would change.
"Sansa?"
Turning at the sound of his voice, she smiles; they'd been here before, over a year before, but sailing away from the North and the danger. Now they're sailing right back in. She wonders if he's thinking of the same thing. He's found his old furs and hers as well, for she sees it there in his hands. "We'll land soon," he says as he steps up beside her, draping her old cloak over her shoulders. "Are you afraid?" She holds fast to his gaze for a moment before shaking her head. "I didn't tell you, but... I wrote to someone of our arrival." Her gaze, which had turned back towards the sea, snaps back, a brow arching in silent surprise. "We can't land without anywhere to go, Sansa." He says softly, reaching out to tenderly touch her hand that still yet grips the railing. Her skin is icy cold. "It's Samwell Tarly." She relaxes, but only a little. That is a name she can trust, only because Jon trusts him. "I can only hope that my raven reached him in time." There had been no time at all for Jon to wait for a response from his old friend and so they would land in White Harbor and head to the spot that he had established in his letter and hope that Sam would be there waiting. From there, he could only hope that the rest of his plan would fall into place.
Though she doesn't speak, she nods, knowing just as well as him that this was their only option, their only plan.
It had to work.
"Put your hood up."
It's Brienne's soft command to her lady and when Sansa turns her blue eyes to her knight, she's smiling gratefully as she does as she's been bid. Her red hair would be known anywhere, even now, and she knows how quickly the rumor of a Stark looking man and redhead woman arriving in White Harbor would spread if her locks were seen by anyone.
With Jon leading the way, they make their way down the center dock and towards the spot known as the Seal Gate. From there they head along a path that is not without traffic- White Harbor is a port city and there are always ships arriving and departing, thus making it a lively enough place despite the cold, snowy climate. It is where the trade for the entire North happens, it is how the rest of the kingdom survives. They step off the main path after so long and they're heading down an alley- Sansa almost opens her mouth to ask Jon if he's lost his mind, but to her surprise he merely gestures ahead to where sure enough, she sees a building come into focus.
"Talk to absolutely no one." Jon says softly as they approach the door, knowing it was quite against his better judgment to bring Sansa to a place such as this. But with Longclaw strapped to his hip once again, he feels powerful, he feels confident. As if this was where he was always meant to be. The North was his home, it gave him strength, it gave him courage. "And stay close to me." He can see she looks worried but she nods before she clutches Robb closer to her chest, hidden beneath her cloak so well it is as if she only carries a bundle. Brienne behind her, they slip single file into the door and out of the cold, Northern air.
Sansa has never seen a place such as this.
It's as if every glance she gives the room, she's met with women in various stages of undress. There's a man fondling one woman's bare breasts for all to see in a corner and there's a rowdy table cheering in another as one man drunkenly kisses the girl trying to pour him another drink. It's a brothel, she realizes, a place she's certainly heard of, but certainly never experienced before. She can't help but to wonder how Jon knows of this place.
Pausing, Jon scans the room; for a single moment, he thinks all is lost, that Sam did not receive his letter in time. But then, as if by some miracle, he spots the round faced man across the room in the darkest, furthest corner. Sam sees him as well and is on his feet as they approach. "Jon!" He greets, clapping his old friend on the back; once, he had thought he would never see Jon Snow again, but there he was, alive and well. He gestures towards Sansa to take a seat and Jon guides her into a chair, leaning in close to whisper something into her ear; she nods and makes no movement to remove her cloak's hood, despite being inside and out of the elements. Jon and Sam sit as well, leaving Brienne to stand just off to the side, her gaze daring any one of those within the room to cross her. "I was surprised to hear from you. Everyone thinks you to be dead."
"Aye, I'm glad to know that. They won't be expecting us." Jon replies, sparing a quick glance to Sansa beside him, who's closed her eyes; she looks as tired as he feels. But their night is not yet over. "Tell me what you know of the North. What is happening?"
Sam opens his mouth as if he means to speak, but then promptly closes it, as if he's uncertain as to what to say. "There is something..." He begins, glancing towards the hooded girl beside Jon, as well, jumping when he finds himself peering into her intense blue stare. "Something I found while at the Citadel." He clarifies, turning back to face Jon, knowing these next few words he had to say would change everything for him. "About you."
"About me?" Jon asks, blinking, clearly surprised.
"It was a diary entry for the High Septon Maynard, he wrote about the annulment of Prince Rhaegar's first marriage and his secret wedding with a girl of Northern blood." Sam speaks slowly, carefully, watching as Jon's face begins to change. He doesn't know, and yet, something tells Sam that somehow he does. "Her name was Lyanna Stark." The cloaked woman beside Jon gives a soft little gasp and Sam casts another glance her way and see she looks as shocked as Jon, though she too holds a strange look of understanding. "According to Maynard, Lyanna gave birth to Rhaegar's son and heir in Dorne and died from childbirth. The child was never found, but they assumed him to be dead. Perhaps buried by a kind soul who witnessed the birth."
Jon can barely hear Sam over the sound of his beating heart. Beneath the table, he feels Sansa touch his leg- a warm touch, a comforting touch. He slips a hand over hers, giving it a gentle squeeze. Somehow, before Sam finishes, Jon already knows what he's going to say.
"You're that son, Jon." Sam speaks clearly, but quietly, so they are not overheard. They are lucky for the loud, rowdy crew in the room; no one pays much mind to their table in the darkest corner. "Rhaegar was your father, Jon, your real father." Jon blinks and for a moment, gives no other reaction, making Sam wonder if he's heard him at all. "Jon... You know what that means, don't you?" He asks and Jon blinks again, not yet speaking, though he does meet Sam's gaze.
"It means he's the true heir to the Iron Throne."
The woman beside Jon speaks for the first time, the sound of her voice causing Sam to nearly leap from his skin. He turns back to her and though she's not lowered her hood, she's sitting up straighter, a new confidence to her body language. He opens his mouth to speak but he's cut off by the sudden wailing of an infant. And it's coming from the woman. Sam watches in absolute shock as she fumbles with the cloak she wears, revealing for the first time that she carries a swaddled baby in her arms, a babe nearly as small as little Sam had been when he first met Gilly. She hushes the baby softly and he quiets after several moments, content enough to suckle his mother's finger in place of her breast. At least for now.
A quick glance around tells Sam that lucky for them, the baby's cries were not heard. Now that he looks closer at the babe she holds, he can see that the child looks quite like Jon- from the dark curls to the shape of his features; it was a Stark child, that much was certain. Now it's Sam's turn to understand what's right there in front of him. This was Jon's son and most certainly the woman beside him, whoever she was, was the infant's mother. "My father was... was Ned Stark." It's Jon speaking for the first time and he's shaking his head as if he doesn't believe the words that have been spoken to him.
Before Sam can speak, it's Sansa that's turning to him, her hand warm upon his shoulder now. Her touch guides his gaze to her face, swiveled in his chair entirely, just so he might face her. "Don't you see...?" She speaks softly, her words so quiet in the loud room that Sam cannot make out everything that she says to him. "This will change everything, Jon, for the better." They were not half siblings, they were cousins. Together, he the heir to the Iron Throne and she the heir to the North, they were a powerful alliance that would gain them more support than simply being Sansa Stark and the bastard of Winterfell. Her words must be the ones he needs to hear for after several long moments, he nods, swallowing down whatever fear and anxiety surely is rising up within him. Then he turns back to face Sam across the table and gives one more, stronger than before, nod.
"Tell me everything you know, Sam."
And he does.
The snow falls swiftly, blanketing the world around her in a fresh cover of white.
She shivers; not from cold, but from fear.
Ahead of her, Rickon stands with his back to her, his Tully touched curls gleaming in the pale moonlight. He's grown tall as a man, but she still recalls the day he was born. She opens her mouth to call his name, tears in her eyes, but her voice does not come. Running and running and running, but she cannot seem to reach him, she cannot seem to touch him. And then suddenly, she's there, just an arm's length from where Rickon stands. His name is a whisper on her trembling lips and slowly, painfully slow, he revolves on the spot.
Her mouth opens in a silent scream.
It is not Rickon, but rather a rotting corpse that most certainly is Robb; he holds Greywind's severed head in his hands, blood splattered all down his front. She closes her eyes and when she opens them, the face is her father and it's Lady's head that tumbles from his hands to land at her feet, golden eyes blinking up at her. Somewhere, in the distance, comes the howl of a lonely wolf.
Closer the howl comes, closer, closer...
She wakes with a gasp, breathing hard, fear still yet clinging to her skin.
"Sansa?"
It's Jon; he stands across the room, Robb cradled in his arms, though the baby sleeps peacefully. "A nightmare, sweetheart?" He whispers as he comes closer, sinking down onto her side of the bed, one hand reaching out to take hers. She trembles, her skin frightfully pale; it's been a long time since she's hard a nightmare that's left her in a state such as this. "Tell me." To his surprise, she shakes her head; it was truly a fearful dream, if she doesn't even wish to speak on it. That was how it always used to be, back in the beginning, back when she first came to him from Ramsay Bolton. He still recalls the nights where she would pace the floor til dawn, too frightened to sleep. He still recalls the nights where she would cry herself back to sleep with her head in his lap, her body simply too tired to fight the need to sleep.
"Why are you awake?" She asks instead, reaching out to tenderly stroke their son's forehead, the only thing that could bring a smile to her face right then was him. "I didn't hear him cry."
"He didn't," Jon admits softly, turning away from her then as if shamed by something. "I couldn't sleep." He goes on, softer still, closing his Stark colored eyes against the emotion welling within him.
Now she understands.
"Oh, Jon..." She murmurs, reaching out for him as he had done for her only moments ago. Her touch brings him back to her and she brushes her fingertips along his jawline, his stubble rough against her skin. Sansa cannot imagine the feelings he must be feeling right then- they had not spoken of it since they found themselves the small room to rent, thanks to Sam's help. All his life, Jon had wanted nothing more than to be a true born Stark, the son of Ned Stark. But he had accepted the hand dealt to him in the form of his bastard status for at least in that he still had a family, brothers and sisters and a father that never once made him feel less than any of the other children. And now... Now...
It's not until he feels her brushing away his tears that Jon knows he's begun to cry. Sansa gently removes Robb from his grasp, tucking the baby carefully against Jon's pillow before she turns back to him and takes him into her arms. She holds him for what might be a moment or a lifetime, he loses track of the time that passes as she whispers soft, comforting words against the shell of his ear, her delicate fingers stroking his dark curls.
"Ned Stark will always be your father," she says when Jon's tears have all been spent. " He knew the truth all along Jon and yet, to keep you safe, he pretended you were his. That is what a real father would do for his child." Sansa smiles, gesturing towards their son that sleeps so soundly in the bed beside them. "It's what you would do for him, isn't it?" Jon takes in the sight of Robb and slowly his lips curve with a small smile.
"Aye," he agrees, turning back to her. "I'd do anything to keep him safe."
"I know," she puts her hand against his once again, giving it a tight squeeze. "And that's how father felt about me, about you, about all of us. It is because of him that you're here with me right now, Jon. You owe it to him to be as good of a father as he was, if not better." He nods; he knows, he knows. He just needed to hear it from someone else. His hand still in hers, he draws her down to the bed and they slide into place on either side, warm beneath the thick furs.
And with their baby tucked safely between them, they drifted back to sleep.
When Jon wakes, he knows what he must do.
Sliding out from beneath the covers, he dresses in the dark and slips from the room, leaving Sansa asleep in the bed with the baby. He heads down the hall three rooms and stops at a single door, raises his hand and knocks.
He knocks until finally, the door swings open.
Though Sam grumbles a curse when he sees Jon standing there, he steps back so he may step into the hazy darkness of his room. "There's something I need you to do for me." Jon says the moment the door has closed behind him. Perhaps it's the tone of voice in which he speaks, but almost at once, Sam is alert. "The mother of my son... The woman I'm with... I need you to marry us." Before, marriage was not an option if they came back North, it never would have been accepted. They knew what they were returning to, they knew what would happen, but they came anyways. They came because their baby brother was in shackles in a cell and the monster who held him held their home hostage, too. But now... The best thing that could ever come from the truth of his parentage... They could love each other openly. They could proclaim their child the heir to Winterfell as well as the Iron Throne. Though a crown of his own was not something Jon wanted, he knows what will happen if he does not seek out his birthright. He swore he would do anything to protect the family he had made with Sansa and so he would. "Marry us. Today. And then we will claim what's ours."
Sam nods.
"But where are we going?"
Jon glances over his shoulder to where she follows behind him, her red hair threatening to free itself from the confines of her cloak's hood with every icy gust of wind. "You will see, we're almost there. Watch your step," he guides her over a fresh heaping of snow and she sees this new path leads downward, towards a gathering of trees that she almost at once recognizes. "Ah, you've spotted them." He chuckles, gesturing towards the vibrant red leaves that guide them along the rest of the way. "It turns out every town in the North has a godswood of its own." They're beneath the canopy of trees now and Sansa pauses for only a moment, taking in the sight of the frozen godswood. Once, she had thought she would never return North, let alone stand in a quiet godswood. "I know it isn't Winterfell's godswood... But..." He trails off for now she's noticed Sam just ahead, standing beneath the heart tree, a knowing sort of smile on his lips.
"Jon... What... What is this?" She's gazing back and forth, from Jon to Sam and then back again, as if she expects one of the men to vanish entirely.
"I told you I would do anything to protect you, so let me." Jon says softly, his hand coming up to catch her cheek, gently, lovingly. "Marry me, Sansa. Right here, right now." He watches as her face changes, her surprise melting into pure joy, the smile on her face lighting her up in a way he's not seen since the day Robb was born. "And then we will go and take back Rickon and Winterfell. We will find Arya and Bran and we'll be a family again." She nods, a strong solemn nod, her chest swelling with pride and love for the man that is offering himself to her entirely, in a way she had once thought never to be possible. "When the North is ours again, we will head south and I will take the Iron Throne from the Lannister's." He vows and her surprise returns. "In a world where Cersei Lannister rules as queen, you will never be safe. And she will never let the North go. If we wish it to be ours and only ours, we must take her down, too." He would fight any man, any army, and any monster if it meant he would keep her safe.
Tears flood her eyes despite the smile on her lips and she nods again, allowing Jon to take her by the hand and lead her towards the heart tree where Sam stands, still waiting for them. And then...
Then they get married.
The first place that they go is just east of Castle Black.
And just as Jon said that they would, they find the camp of wildlings that Jon had once allied himself with. Tormund at their command, he holds the power of two thousand fighting men and Jon knows that if there's no one else in all of the North that he can count on, he will always have Tormund.
"I wonder who will be more excited to see you?" Sansa's voice breaks into his thoughts as they approach the camp, voices already carrying along the winter wind. Jon grins, tossing a glance over his shoulder at her where she walks, Brienne close behind, the baby bundled and carried in a sling she's fastened around her torso, happily snoozing despite the chill of the wind. "Tormund or Ghost." Jon chuckles and nods, having been thinking about his wolf since the moment they set forth on this journey to find Tormund and the wildlings.
They don't have long to think for suddenly comes the howl of a wolf.
All three of them come to a stop at the end of the camp, where tents and huts have been erected as shelters from the icy cold, fires built in various places to offer as much warmth as possible to the elderly and children that sit around in groups. That is when Jon spots the wolf- he's running from the center of the camp, faster than Jon thinks he's ever seen him run before. Someone screams as Ghost leaps through the air, landing on Jon and knocking him back into the snow. More yelling, more voices. Chaos follows as the wildlings gather, thinking the white wolf was attacking a stranger, not greeting a beloved friend, until finally a loud voice booms above it all: "Little crow!"
"Good boy, Ghost," Jon is laughing, trying to push Ghost's paws from his shoulders so he might at least sit up. It isn't until Sansa sinks down and puts her warm hand to the wolf's back that he turns away, instead far more interested in her and the baby. A shadow crosses over him and he tilts his head back, looking up into the grinning face of his old friend. "Tormund." He greets as the orange haired man reaches down, offering a hand, which Jon takes and allows the wildling to pull him up onto his feet again. The two men embrace but even when they pull back, Tormund can't help but to clasp the younger man on his shoulder. "Edd," he says, seeing the dark haired man now approaching as well, a stunned look on his face.
"You brought the big woman!" Tormund breaks in with a wolfish grin, his eyes seeking out Brienne that stands just behind Sansa, a hand on the hilt of her sword. "And a... Baby?" The only thing able to drive his attention away from the lady knight was the sight of the sleeping baby in Sansa's arms- a baby that he sees looks unmistakably like the man standing in front of him. "You must have a lot to say, if you've come all this way." Tormund says, offering Sansa a smile before he turns back to Jon. "Come, let's get the lady and littler crow out of the cold." He gestures for them to follow him and so they do, falling into step as if they'd never even left.
"Are you ready?"
Jon's voice in her ear makes her shiver, but she nods, a wane smile on her lips. "I am." She says, perhaps with more confidence than she truly feels. But she is a Stark, she is the blood of Winterfell, she is strong. She is brave.
The door they stand outside of suddenly opens and a steward appears in the door way, gesturing for the pair to step into the room. They have left Robb behind with Brienne and Sansa feels lost without her son near. But there is something else she must focus on; the present, so they might have a future. And now was not the time to tell anyone the truth about Jon and his birth. Once they had full Northern support, they would tell all of the Houses at once, before they take back Winterfell from the Bolton's.
Together, she and Jon walk along the length of the room, towards the single table that sits in the hall. House Reed is a modest house, but they are loyal and fiercely so, it only made sense for this to be the first noble house they seek support from. Howland Reed sits behind the table with just a single man, perhaps his maester, standing behind him. "When they told me Jon Snow was at my gate, requesting an audience with me, I thought it to be lie." The man says as they approach, a smile tugging at his lips. "But here you are, Jon Snow, alive and well it looks like." He rises up from his chair, stepping around the table so he can come and stand before them. "You are your father's son, bastard born or not, you have the Stark look." In truth, Howland is somewhat taken aback by the resemblance, it is as if he's peering into his old friend's face again, not his son. "Welcome to Greywater Watch." For the first time, he spares a look at the cloaked woman beside Jon; she is tall and thin, but with her hood pulled up there is little he can see besides her ivory features and the blue eyes that peer back at him. "To you too, my lady." Intense blue eyes, he notes. He feels as if he's seen eyes like these before, but he cannot place it.
"I thank you for your warm welcome, Lord Reed," Jon greets, clasping hands with the man for a moment, offering him a grin. "I imagine you understand I've come for a reason." To this Howland chuckles, though he shrugs as he makes his way back around to the chair he had vacated just a few minutes before.
"Aye, there must be. The whole North thinks you to be dead, it's been well over a year since you were last even rumored to be seen." He replies as a door behind him opens and two servants step in, bringing ale and chairs, all of which are offered to the guests on the other side of the table. "Many say all of House Stark is dead, you know." Jon's face darkens but he gives a solemn nod, taking the seat offered to him only after he's ensured the young woman beside him is seated, too. "None of your younger half siblings have been seen in years." Again, Jon nods, his hand clenching into a fist beneath the table. "And the poor oldest girl. Married to that bastard Bolton." Reed scowls, shaking his head. "I imagine he had her killed, he got what he wanted out of her when Winterfell became his."
"Sansa Stark isn't dead."
Both men turn to the woman seated beside Jon. Hands reaching up, she pulls back the hood of her cloak, revealing for the first time since she stepped foot in the North the rich red hair that every Northern man would know. "By the gods... Sansa Stark!" Howland Reed jumps to his feet in shock, shaking the goblets of ale atop the table in his haste. Those blue eyes, that red hair... He knows her because he knew her mother, because he once knew Sansa when she was but a little girl. "You're alive," he whispers, tears filling his eyes without shame, hands trembling as they settle upon the top of the table.
"I'm alive because Jon saved me," Sansa says with a smile for Jon, though she returns her gaze to Howland, head tilting as the man looks torn between falling to his knees or jumping for joy. "The North was not safe for me, not with Ramsay Bolton in Winterfell and Cersei Lannister in the South." Reed is nodding, listening despite the whirlwind of emotions rushing through him. "We need your help." She goes on, softer, never breaking eye contact with the man in front of her. "Winterfell belongs to me, to Jon. To House Stark. Please... Please, lend us your support. Help us take back the North." Her pleading is unnecessary, Howland Reed knew he'd have done anything she asked of him.
Silently, Howland Reed drops to his knees and unsheathes the sword at his hip, offering it up in the North's gesture of fealty. "I once pledged my life and sword to your brother, Robb Stark, I will pledge it to you now. To House Stark." Sansa swallows, her heart racing as the man speaks words she never once thought to hear again.
Beside her, Jon puts a warm hand on her shoulder and she knows that they're one step closer to saving Rickon and taking back the North. It was only a matter of time.
Soon, they would truly go home.
Somehow, against all odds, they have done it.
It is not all the houses- some are loyal to the Bolton's now- but it is enough to muster an army together. The heads of all those houses, along with Tormund and Edd, sit in the war tent with Jon and Sansa, the first night all of them have come together. For hours now they've been inside, so long now that the candles Sansa had lit when darkness fell were now dripping pudles of wax on the tabletops.
"My lords, we thank you again for the support you give us." Jon speaks, glancing around the room at all of the faces. "Before we depart for the night, there is something else we must speak of." Some of the lords exchange glances, but more nod, encouraging Jon to continue speaking. Despite the little time they've spent together, these Northern lords have begun to develop a respect for Ned Stark's bastard son. In truth, some had already made the decision to follow him wherever he went, as they had followed Robb Stark and Ned Stark before him. "Sam," Jon gestures for his old friend to step up beside him, looking somewhat uncomfortable as all the eyes fall upon him instead. "Sam found out something while in the Citadel, from a journal entry of the High Septon at the time of Robert's Rebellion." Many of the men in the room know who Jon speaks of, they remember those days when Rhaegar Targaryen and Robert Baratheon fought for the throne and Robert won.
"What does this journal entry speak of?" One lord cuts in, perhaps uncertain as to what this has to do with anything at all.
Jon sighs, his heart racing; he isn't certain at all how the Northern lords will take the truth of his birth. But this was it, this was the moment. He could only hope that when the truth came out, these men would remain loyal to at least Sansa, to at least the son and heir she's given them. "It spoke of his anullment to Elia Martell and his secret marriage to Lyanna Stark." A collective gasp goes up among the tent, more looks exchanged by the lords as the information sinks into their brains. "Rhaegar and Lyanna had a single child, born in Dorne after Robert Baratheon ascended the throne."
"Marriage? He kidnapped her." Another lord speaks out.
"A child?" Another cries out, the realization of such a thing already dawning on him.
"Aye." Jon lets out the breath he's been holding, yet again glancing around the room, taking in the various degrees of emotion upon all of their faces. Beside him, Sansa is still, but she holds her head high as she listens to the conversations breaking out all around them. "I know it is a lot to take in, but as Sam as pointed out to me when I too expressed disbelief- why would the High Septon have reason to lie?"
These words sink in and the lords circle back to Jon, their side conversations and remarks tapering off. "If there was a child born, where is it now? Dead?" They all know what Robert Baratheon would have done if a child of Rhaegar's was left alive.
Jon shakes his head. "I am that child." He says the words simply and they fall from his tongue much easier than he had thought they might. For several moments, there is nothing but stunned silence and it only deepens his fears that these men will not remain loyal to him.
"Then you are heir to the Iron Throne." It's little Lyanna Mormont, named in honor of his mother, the youngest of all of them in the room. "I had thought in you we might find our new King in the North, but we've found more than that." Her dark eyes hold steady to Jon's gaze and he's surprised to see the quickest flash of a smile on her stoic features. "Are you asking us to help you reclaim the Iron Throne, once you have Winterfell?"
Jon shakes his head, rising up to his feet now, staring out at the lords. "I'm asking you to do whatever it takes to keep the North safe, to keep her safe." He gestures towards Sansa, who's blue eyes widen slightly in surprise; this was not the way she had thought him to take things. "Sansa Stark is the heir to the North and I am bound to keep her and the North safe. Just as you all are." He puts a hand onto her shoulder and his touch is warm, encouraging. Before all of the eyes in the room, she slides her hand into place over his. "None of us will ever be safe if Cersei Lannister sits upon the throne, even if we take back Winterfell." Jon goes on, stepping around the table then so he can stand closer to all of them in the tent. "I am not asking you to sacrifice your men for me or for what might be my birthright. I don't care if the Iron Throne is mine or yours or yours," he sighs, another shake of his head. "The only thing I care about is keeping the North safe."
"You have House Mormon'ts support, Jon Snow. In this and whatever comes next." Lyanna says after a few beats of silence. Murmurs of assent follow, much to Jon's relief.
"The North still needs someone to lead," Jon says, speaking more words that surprise Sansa. Words that he had never once mentioned to her until this very moment. "You wish to have a King in the North, but what you need is a queen." He turns back to face her across the table that separates them. "Queen in the North," he says, before he sinks to a knee, Longclaw presented to her in his gesture of loyalty. She is his queen, no matter what his Targaryen blood might say.
"Queen in the North," Brienne echoes from where she stands at the far side of the room, dropping to her knees without hesitation. One by one, every man in the room rises and then falls, the only sound that of the steel against sheath as the Northern lords offer their fealty to the young woman that's now risen to her feet.
Queen in the North, Queen in the North.
The words are an echo, a chant; she sucks in a breath as her eyes find Jon's, his lips curving with a smile as he gives her a nod. Her fears begin to fade and she holds her head a bit higher and looks out into the sea of faces, knowing it was them that she could count on. Once, she had nothing but fear to live on. Once she had been alone. But out there she sees faces of men who were loyal to her name and her house, men who would swing their swords in her name, men that would die to protect her. In these loyal men, she has protection, she has what she needs to bring her family back together again.
And so she nods, accepting the crown they offer.

Thoughts on a Sonic Movie sequel
I don’t have my thoughts fully organized yet but I’ve been vibrating about this movie for over 24 hours by now so I’m just ramble here
(note: I know Mobius and mobian are not words anymore and Sonic’s world in the movie is nothing like cartoon/comics’ but I use them because it sucks not having a name for things. I didn’t want to do it to avoid confusion but it is what it is, take it up with Sega for refusing to name things)
Metal Sonic must absolutely be in the sequel, and I’m not even a big fan of the guy, it’s just obvious. Robotnik’s entire shtick in the movie was wanting Sonic’s power to power his machines. He keeps the quill by the end of movie and clearly plans to use it. Also, no better way to spice up a sequel than a brand new enemy, and in recent years Sega has been very keen of establishing Metal Sonic as THE Eggman Robot. So yeah, make it happen. No better way to finalize Eggman’s origin story here.
Speaking of that, a lot of people (including me) disliked that Robotnik’s machines in the movie completely lack the whimsical designs they have in the game, but at the same time I understand that this is a version of the character that actually works for a government and is therefore a little (just a little tho) more down to earth. So now that he’s alone and independent I think his machines’ designs should change and get closer to the game ones.
I wonder if the Mushroom Planet will just become Eggmanland. Normally Eggmanland doesn’t exist because it’s his goal but in a setting with multiple dimensions I feel it would work, he’s not building it by destroying people’s lives.
In fact I loved the they established right from the start that there are several dimension and that the rings are a well known way of travelling through them. It opens up endless possibilities for settings in the future while keeping the focus on Sonic and the other mobian characters because they know all these dimensions already and might even live on them.
Now, Tails. I am so hyped for a completely new take on this boy. I spent the entire movie thinking how Movie Sonic would be thrilled to meet Tails as a friend. It’s going to be great, but certainly very different from their dynamic in the games. Mostly because Movie Sonic is way more childish than his game’s counterpart and Tails in the teaser already looked like a confident and determined hero (and even kind of fast too), so I don’t think they’ll have a idol/fan relationship like in the games, I doubt there will even be a significant age gap mentioned. Which sure, big departure from canon, but I loved their take on Sonic so I think it can be good. Also honestly, to this day I don’t but Tails’ canon age. Younger than Sonic? Sure. Half his age? Weird, especially given that he’s never, ever treated any different from Amy and the other teens. So if the movie decides he’s a teen it won’t be any kind of big deal.
I guess he might still come to idolize Sonic for some reason? He might have come for Sonic because Mobius is in danger and he knows of Sonic’s power somehow (Longclaw is alive and told him? The threat is Robotnik and he let slip that someone defeated him once? Are they gonna bring the Angel Island prophecy mural? Honestly there’s a bunch of options since we don’t even know why Sonic has the powers first of all). So in that case he might have built up some idea of Sonic as a savior, so it will be interesting to see how they clash with what the guy actually is (though obviously Tails’ gonna come to like him anyway).
And Sonic might want to live up to his expectations? I mean, Sonic’s a cool kid that loves to impress. The entire movie there were only adults around rolling their eyes at him, so if he gets a younger brother that is already all over him? Man he’s gonna love him. He’s gonna really get into it. He’ll definitely bite more than he can chew and get in mortal peril and learn a lesson about not being so arrogant, while Tails learns that he has to pull his own weight as the sidekick if he wants a hero’s tale to unfold. There, it’s a perfectly good kid movie script, Paramount Pictures can start giving me money any time now.
The Longclaw theory only makes it better because what if she raised him too? What if he grew up all his life hearing tales of a brother he never knew? What if he looks so confident from the get go because he’s already inspired by a hero he might be destined to meet? What if his powers/mutant tails have the same origin as Sonic’s power so he has this idea that Sonic will understand him more than anybody else?
See my main point here is that is hard to pull Tails’ canonical backstory of “I was a lonely bullied boy and then I befriended Sonic” when the first movie already did a good lonely kid story, so I’m trying to imagine some twist to it. Sonic was a kid with a big heart who quickly got attached to humans and movies and pop culture and simply enjoying life. So I’m wondering if Tails would be different, if he’s a kid with a mission as shown in the teaser and not very into the silly antics Sonic gets himself into. If he’ll just try to get Sonic into some big hero job without any idea of how Sonic feels, or why he is attached to Earth, or why he is a hero. A universe where what Tails has to get from Sonic is not an adventurous spirit or confidence, but compassion and fun. Like, if this ends up with long travels and Sonic showing Tails the wonders of Earth and the like it will be extremely cliche and yet I’ll love every second of it get on it already Paramount.
It would also draw some parallels between Tails and Robotnik, and I always love when that happens. I’m not trying to picture Tails as a Mini Robotnik here, I can’t imagine the dude having any kind of evil goals, but he is the kind to get caught up in his genius sometimes and can be kind of arrogant too, so I’d like to see that. Jim Carrey has talked a lot in interviews of how he sees Robotnik as someone with a Sonic shaped hole in his heart. I’d like to watch someone get said hole filled. Joy and fun aren’t exactly inherent to kids, if Tails comes from some sort of harsh situation/crisis he might’ve not had the time to care about these things. Give Tails a friend. Give Tails his friend.
I had other things to say in this post I think but I’m too overcome with love for those two to function right now. I almost teared up just from seeing Tails in the screen. You’ve put them both in the screen already Paramount. Now do both in the same scene. Please. That’s all I want
#sonic series#sonic the hedgehog#sonic movie#tails prower#dr. robotnik#dr. eggman#cannot remember which tag i use for him and honestly it just got more confusing#sonic movie spoilers#unbreakable bond#so good to have this tag back it's brotp loving hours here#by which i mean 3 am

Hey, now with three episodes left and another war coming their way, when do you think Jon and Dany will get married? Also, a stupid question, but what's with Tyrion betraying Dany? Why? I spent the last year avoiding all spoilers and info about the show and now I keep seeing this. P.S. I love your blog, it's always been a light in times of darkness for Jonerys shippers
Hey friend!
Thank you, I’m really glad you like my blog. I’m just going to use you ask to answer a bunch of other questions sort of related. Please forgive me for hijacking your ask.
First things first, let’s talk about how the Night King was killed.
Foreshadowing for the end of the Night King
We are all freaking out because the end of the Night King and his army of the dead was not something most of us expected to happen so soon, nor did we expect it to happen the way it did end up happening. Personally, I feel like there are many loose threads that have yet to be probably taking care of in regards to the magical storyline. Having said all that, there was foreshadowing for how things did end up going down. On my prediction post on April 9, 2019, I wrote the following (you can read the rest of the post HERE)
6. The Valyrian steel dagger that Bran gave to Arya will play an important role, perhaps even be used to finally destroy the Night King.
The dagger was quite prominent throughout season 7 including making an appearance in one of the text Sam was reading in the citadel, perhaps it’s even one of the texts he brought along with him to Winterfell. We are clearly meant to see this as an important object.
Going off this I believe that Arya’s training as a Faceless Men is important to the endgame. I don’t think she went through that training just to get revenge. The Faceless Men worship the gods of death and the Night King has been described as Death incarnate, so there very well could be a connection there. If we take GRRM at his word and we won’t see the typical fantasy trope of the good guys coming together to destroy the evil monster, then the other very typical fantasy trope of the hero battling the monster in a sword fight might not be the route that GRRM goes in. It might very well be that in order to destroy the Night King characters will have to work in unison to do whatever needs to be done to destroy him.
I don’t know how one destroys the Night King but perhaps it has something to do or it’s tied to the shard of dragonglass the Night King has in his heart.
Now, I was wrong about the other stuff and didn’t think things would go down exactly as they did, however, I did recognize the importance of the dagger and that it would play an integral role in destroying the Night King.
So, now we find ourselves having dealt with the dead is time to deal with the living. Now, we actually had foreshadowing for that as well, and I actually picked up on it right after season 7, however, I completely ignored myself and decided to take my prediction in a different direction. But let’s look back to what I wrote on September 19, 2017, season 7 was very much present on my mind and this was my immediate impression after watching the season (you can read the full post HERE)
Generally speaking, I think we’ve been going about predicting the ending of the series the wrong way. Most of us assumed (not wrongly) that the Wight Walker/Others would be the final enemy, the last battle of the series. But now, I don’t think that will be the case.
While the WW/Others SHOULD have been the ultimate enemy (in-universe) and threat to all of Westeros, they won’t be. Why? Because the nature of man is to pursue and retrain power and even battling a natural disaster (the WW are somewhat symbolic of climate change) won’t dissuade those who want to retain power, to give it up. Think of our current issues with climate change, while it might seem like a no-brainer to combat it many people don’t care or don’t want to fight it because fighting it would diminish their bottom line, i.e. the money.
Having said that I believe that the Wight Walkers will be defeated by the end of episode 4. I think they’ll come pretty far south but I don’t think they’ll get to King’s Landing.
So having dealt with what should have been the ultimate threat to humanity our heroes, those who survive should be able to go home and have nice quiet lives. But unfortunately, our heroes live in Westeros so the war is still not over for them. There is one more enemy that they must battle but this is not some mythical antagonist, no just a human one: Cersei Lannister assisted by Euron Greyjoy (in the books it’ll be the reverse).
I’m not sure how Cersei’s defeat will go down but if the Red Keep hasn’t gotten kaboom yet, it probably will. I still believe in the Valonqar theory so Jaime will bring an end to his twin sisters reign. I think she’ll be defeated by either the end of episode 5 or the beginning of episode 6.
I’m not quoting myself to brag because I ended up being completely wrong about how things unfold. but at some point, I was right, when I allowed my instincts to guide me.
Having said all this, what I’m really trying to get at is that there was clear foreshadowing for how things were going to go down this season. We all just chose to ignore it, but the foreshadowing was there. Which means that anything that happens from now on should have already been foreshadowed.
What we need to do now is to accept what we are being told and not what we would like to see. This is something I say all the time but it’s hard for me to do as well, as the evidence above shows.
Tyrion’s Betrayal
Before I answer your ask on Jon and Dany, I want to answer your ask about Tyrion’s betrayal.
I believe it was last fall when Frikidoc told us the Tyrion would be tried in episode 6 for betraying the Starks.
After season 7 my initial instinct was that there was something off about Tyrion. I couldn’t put my finger on it, however, in that same post from September 19, 2017, I replied to a comment:
I can’t see anyone dying after Cersei, so it’ll have to be before that or during it.
I think Jaime’s death is a good bet. In the past I would never have guessed Tyrion but, I donno, after this season I can see it happening. There was something off about him.
I’ve always thought that there would be a good chance that Jorah would die and I still think that’s the case.
For me to feel that way, they had to be putting something out there for the audience to pick up on. Again, later on, I chose to ignore it, but the feeling had been there. So, the foreshadowing is there if the story goes that route.
There are other clues in the books that hint at Tyrion’s betrayal and you can read those HERE.
Now, to Jon and Dany.
This morning has been extremely frustrating for me as it seems the entire fandom has forgotten all the foreshadowing that has been laid out throughout the series not only for the union of Jon and Dany but also for their child.
The parallels and connection between Jon and Dany have been laid out on countless metas and post so I will not reiterate them again here. However, I will note, what I would consider, the foreshadowing we’ve been given the last two season.
Marriage between Jon and Daenerys
First, the theme of “togetherness” that was introduced in season 7. This word is woven throughout almost all the interactions Jon and Dany have with each other. It’s actually the last thing they say to one another when Dany agrees to sail to Winterfell with Jon.
Additionally, Littlefinger very pointedly tells Sansa, before he dies, that a marriage between Jon and Dany would make the unstoppable. I’m paraphrasing here. Again, touching on the theme of “togetherness” introduce in relation to Jon and Dany.
This season, we have Davos boldly announcing that what Westeros needs is a just Queen and am honorable King and that Jon and Dany would make an excellent pairing in that regard. This is as bold a statement as it comes and a truthful one.
Point being, that the themes surrounding these two have always pointed to them coming together to form a complete package, two halves of a whole. I see no reason why they wouldn’t be married.
By the way, this isn’t even taking into consideration Jon’s Targaryen heritage and how beneficial it would be for the two of them to unite their claims.
Jon and Dany’s Child
The first hint of this is from season 1, however, it doesn’t get picked up again until season 6 when Dany tells one of the khals who is holding her hostage that she will never give him a son.
In season 7 we get no less than 5 clues hinting at a child between Jon and Dany.
The first conversation between Tyrion and Dany where he brings up the issue of an heir. (This happens in the Painted Table Room)
The second conversation between Tyrion and Dany where he once again brings up the issue of an heir (I think this one is by the fireplace)
When Jon tries to return Longclaw to Jorah, beyond the Wall, Jorah tells him to keep it so that he can pass it on to his children.
When they are sailing back to Dragonstone after the Wight Hunt, Dany tells Jon that the dragons are the only children she’ll ever have.
At the Dragonpit, Dany and Jon once again talk about Dany’s belief that she can’t have children but this time Jon challenges the veracity of what Mirri Maaz Durr said.
They went out of their way last season to let us know that a child between Jon and Dany was something that could very much happen. You don’t get this amount of foreshadowing for nothing.
The moral of the story here is, that what happened in episode 3 did have foreshadowing, we might have read the foreshadowing incorrectly or missed it all together but it was there.
So, in short, I still expect Jon and Dany to marry.

That was Rhaegar's dagger? It is confirmed?I hope so because that battle was weird
Hello Anon, Thanks for the ask & sorry for the delay in responding. I’ve been grappling with my disappointment with s8e3.
First of all, am a woman who isn’t misogynist and isn’t troubled by the fact that Arya Stark was the one to kill the Night King.
Her show avatar has proven herself to be very capable and I think the spar between her and Brienne in season 7 was meant to hint at it. Also, we’ve seen through various seasons in the show that every chance Arya got, she practiced her water-dancing moves. And then when she was in Bravos, she eventually learned stealth & moves that she exhibited during the fight. This book quote about her:
“Swift as a deer. Quiet as a shadow. Fear cuts deeper than swords. Quick as a snake. Calm as still water.”
isn’t unfounded and would perhaps be even more relevant to her character arc in the books. So yeah, she could well deliver the final blow to the Night King.
What troubled me the most are these questions:
1. What was the Night King about? Was he simply suicidal and wanted someone to just kill him? (I’m trying my best to not include sarcasm here but you can assume..)
2. What was Jon’s entire character arc about?
Is his destiny the Iron Throne? Yes, perhaps. But is that the most important thing about him? To gain political power & sit the Iron Throne? If so, the SHOW did a very bad job of proving him capable. They’ve shown him being a sad, unwilling person who is constantly thrust into positions of power and get killed or nearly get killed on various occasions. (I’ll stick to the show version due to REASONS)
3. Imagine what if Jon had remained dead?
- NO ONE WILL BE BOTHERED ABOUT THE ARMY OF THE DEAD.
- Daenerys will at some point return to Westeros and claim & win the Iron Throne.
- Winterfell will remain in the hands of Boltons’ and if by some miracle, the Starks win it back, they’ll bend the knee the moment they see 3 dragons and the six kingdoms marching on them. Cersei’s “no one can hold the North” was in light of the absence of dragons but Dany has 3 of them so… it’s just common sense really.
Sidenote: Dany, a monarch, is listening to snide remarks and taking so much bullshit only because of her respect(love) for Jon. She would not even be there if it weren’t for him. Also, normally, when the KING bends the knee, every twat with a tongue doesn’t get to go behind him and question the Queen whom the said King bent the knee to. I don’t know what the show is trying to convey.
- (Continuing from what if Jon wasn’t resurrected…) If Dany never went beyond the Wall, she won’t lose a dragon & it would have to be Bran’s crossing of the Wall that’ll be its downfall & not an undead dragon.
- Eventually, there would be a war and it might end up the same way. With Arya making the final kill right before everything is seemingly lost.
Also, I haven’t mentioned f(?)Aegon storyline here because even if he’s a Blackfyre, dragonseeds can ride a dragon & Dany might still find a 2nd dragon rider. Besides, I’m trying to think in the show-only-universe.
4. As for the dagger that killed the Night King, the showrunners explicitly stated that Arya hit him in the same place in his chest where the children embedded the dragonglass. First of all, how did she know where to stab him and why was there a gap in the armor (mind you, the Others’ armor has magic is not the regular steel thing, its Ice magic)? Did someone tell Arya where to hit him or was it coincidental?
Fluke of luck, I’d say!
6. Why did Theon have to die? Bran literally asked him to run to his certain death. Like… wtf?!!!
5. To top it all, D&D saying that they did it for shock value/unpredictability was a bit of a wtf moment for me. We’ve HAD 7 seasons and 2 episodes of unpredictability and now was the time for ANSWERS!!! If Bran had spoken SOMETHING instead of sitting and warging into ravens of the Raventree hill (dead tree reminded me of it lol), explained everyone’s role without giving away the ending perhaps but in a way that it would have made sense in the end, I’d be okay really. Something like, “Jon, you’re a watcher, you go watch! Arya, you be NO ONE.” I know, so lame but I didn’t get 2 years to write the scene!!!
For all these reasons and more (but that’s not the point of this ASK, I just realized), you have to forgive me for being critical of the WRITING for this episode.
Now, coming back to the actual ask - why I think the dagger was Rhaegar’s
We saw this image in s7:
The text reads:
When Aegon the conqueror forged his Seven Kingdoms, he and his descendants would often decorate their blades with dragonglass feeling a kinship with the stone. The royal fashion for dragonglass ornamentation soon spread throughout the Seven Kingdoms to those wealthy enough to afford it. Hilts and pommels were and are the most common decoration for dragonglass if too brittle to make a useful crossguard. Indeed, its very brittleness is what relegate it to the great houses and the most successful merchants.
The dagger is Valyrian steel with a dragonbone hilt (black colored) and a ruby embedded in it. Needless to say, it belonged to the Targaryens. We know of only one recent Targaryen who was all about rubies – Rhaegar Targaryen.
“Rubies flew like drops of blood from the chest of a dying prince, and he sank to his knees in the water and with his last breath murmured a woman’s name.”
In season 7, when Littlefinger(LF) gave the dagger to Bran, he confirmed it’s the same catspaw dagger that was sent to kill Bran and so Bran should have it. And Bran passed it on to Arya.
This catspaw dagger, as you must surely remember, was taken by Catelyn to King’s Landing where LF vouched that he owned it at one point but he had lost it to Tyrion when Tyrion lost a bet against Jaime.
In books, there’s a very famous Tyrion quote (which leads me to believe in Tyrion-traitor theories)
“Whatever you may believe of me, Lady Stark, I promise you this – I never bet against my family.”
Long story short, Tyrion tried convincing Catelyn of his innocence but she wouldn’t listen and took him hostage.
There’s another Jaime chapter in books where he’s trying to discuss with Cersei who would’ve sent the assassin after Bran and then said that it “used to be” in Littlefinger’s possession but he actually lost it in a bet to Robert Baratheon.
Now before I share my views about how Robert got his hands on that dagger, we have to think how Littlefinger got his hands on that precious heirloom of the Targaryen dynasty. He just took it from the armory.
Robert didn’t really care for gold - where it came from or how it was spent as long as he had enough to support his “lifestyle” (drinking & whoring). And I believe Littlefinger has not only been stealing coins or diverting funds from the Crown, but he was stealing other tangibles assets as well.
“His last letter mentions the rebels only briefly before beseeching me to ship him some old tapestries of Robert’s.”- Cersei: (ADWD)
Here, LF had sent her a request for Robert’s “old” tapestries. OLD? Robert just died, like less than 3 years ago and Baratheons still ruled the Seven Kingdoms even if it’s just in name.
Petyr laughed. “Perhaps I shall. Or better still, to our sweet Cersei. Though I should not speak harshly of her, she is sending me some splendid tapestries. Isn’t that kind of her?”
In this context, I think “old” really meant Targaryen era tapestries that can be found lying neglected in some basement underneath the Red Keep. Which implies, most of their relics are up for taking only if one knew where to look. So, in my opinion, Littlefinger took the catspaw dagger from the royal armory at some point and gave it back to Robert in a public setting where everyone could see it exchange hands & conclude that Petyr was NOT the owner.
Finally, I think that Rhaegar Targaryen possessed the dagger on his person when he rode into the battle at the Trident. I believe it was a combat necessity to carry both- a dagger and a sword. Surely Rhaegar, the Dragon Prince would have carried his Valyrian Steel dagger with him.
As for Robert, he took it from Rhaegar as a winner’s trophy when Rhaegar fell but due to his deep-rooted scorn for Targaryens, never really cared for it afterward.
I hope this makes sense because I’m not really the one for writing metas. I’ve tried to answer your question but I’m too impatient. Lol Lemme know if you have any follow-up questions.
