I am procrastinating on my uni assignments so here’s the 2012!TMNT main cast ranked on who would be homophobic/transphobic

6 - April

You cannot convince me she isn’t a 2012 Tumblr girl like… look at her. She spent most of her teenage years debating with homophobes on the internet. She would 100% watch supernatural and 100% ship Castiel.

"Would she fetishise mlm relationships?" NO. She would also watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer and ship Fuffy. She reads yaoi AND yuri in her spare time.

If she swoons over a mutant and an alien getting together, she will 100% do the same for a gay couple.

Probably taught the others not to be homophobic (mostly the top 3).

While I cannot imagine him ever being homophobic, I can imagine him being transphobic when he was younger.

BUT I only think that because the primary school biology textbook was his bible when he was five.

As soon as he had access to a more “advanced” biology book, he learnt his mistakes.

Had a deep understanding of gender before his brother understood the differences between them as a result of this.

4 - Mikey

Thinks LGBT+ people are awesome, however his only exposure to gay people is rupaul drag race so his views on them are stereotypical.

He would probably be taken aback if you introduced him to a gay man who isn’t flamboyant, but he would adjust after a bit.

He would definitely say “You don’t look gay” though.

Aside from April, he would be the most angry when hearing homophobic/transphobic comments.

3 - Leo

The middle point between homophobic and not homophobic for the group (even though she's seconds lmao, the group is just not really homophobic).

I headcanon her as a trans lesbian so any homophobic/transphobic thoughts she would have are a mixture of her sheltered life and internalised issues.

Nothing extreme though, but her mind would get hung up on two girls holding hands on the street for multiple days.

She would also go through the 5 stages of grief for every unprompted homophobic thought she gets.

Everyone helps her overcome this, especially after she discovers herself and comes out.

2 - Raph

I am sorry, but he would probably use homophobic language before meeting April.

However, that’s due to him not understanding what he was saying. He probably thought gay was a synonym for stupid.

Once he understands who LGBT+ people are and what they face (AKA being scolded by April), he would probably feel really bad about it.

He wouldn’t really apologise for it verbally, but he would 100% kill a homophobe after that so everyone understands he’s changed.

Mikey would then make fun of him for being homophobic which would get him really mad. It's revenge for Raph calling him gay to insult him and brushing his genuine anger off.

I am not sorry, this dude was definitely homophobic before meeting the Turtles + April. Like, actually homophobic.

His dad is homophobic so it comes from that.

He called Donnie the f-slur behind his back to the rest of the group. To put it lightly, they were not impressed.

The first moment where he questions his behaviour is when April rips him to shreds over it, but it’s not until Raph pulls him aside to express disappointment that he realises how bad his behaviour is.

Probably goes MIA for a couple of days undergoing serious reflection on his life and beliefs. He then comes back to apologise for his behaviour.

He takes some time to truly overcome his bigotry, but he gets there eventually. Like Raph, he'll kill a homophobe after the ordeal.

Perfect culmination of his arc....

Hi! If at this very moment you had to pick one larry moment that makes you feel good (not the best, not the most momentous, but just a larry moment that makes you feel good), what would it be? Could you share it, please?

What a lovely ask! So, today is Thanksgiving in the US, a day that for our indigenous peoples is a day of mourning, as it originally comemoriated a massacre and obviously preluded genocide. That being said, in our late stage capitalist society, it is also a federally sanctioned day off in which service/retail/minimum wage workers have (often) a rare vacation, and a chance to gather with their family and friends. This year, the holiday is especially significant, because it’s the first time people here can get together safely for a holiday since the vaccines rolled out.

With all that in mind, I’m at my sister’s house with her three bebes and husband, her two gay besties, and my parents, who are? Oddly? Doing just fine with the married gay couple lol. SO. The Larry moment that I find most pertinent today is the picture of them with Lou T’s newborn baby, domestic and cuddly on the couch with the babe held between them, the most glowy, embarrassing puppy love ALL over their faces, Harry with exhuberant dimples, Louis with his fringe so long and teeth so sharp with his jawline just growing into its length. They were SO YOUNG. And so obviously teenagers in love. And that baby between them represented everything that they hoped and dreamed for themselves, a taste of a future filled with family and chaos and stinky feet and half-eaten turkey plates but devoured dessert. A future where family was the glue, found family, birth family, made family. Friends that become family.

Gratefulness never goes amiss, and in and of itself isn’t a bad thing to celebrate. All cultures used to have harvest feasts and festivals to celebrate before the long winter, and today is that day for me… the last light before the snowfall, the leaves before the barren trees. I’m thankful for my found family that IS my blood family, and thankful for the DNA that brought us together, and that reminds us that our ancestors survived colonization and are in our blood today, binding us to this land, this continent, this turtle island. I’m thankful for you all here, this online community of happiness and gayness and Larry-ness that allows me to write and heal and be silly and loud and fucking flamboyant. I’ve made so many friend here that I treasure. Like seriously, people who have saved my sanity and made me a better human. I love you all, and I wish you all healing and family and love on this day. Hey. I don’t like posting this because I like to be a positive person and this is a really cool and positive fandom, but I need to say please avoid melodicalmusic on DeviantArt/doggiebeats on Quotev. Initially I thought it was just someone who was missing the point, but they are far worse and actively harmful. (notes under cut)

melodicalmusic/doggiebeats is the author and illustrator of an au fic named “Velo Life”. At first glance it is harmless, the art is fine. The story revolves around a mask named Pap (a papillon dog) doing things, being an assistant to the monarchy, and dating Fox. Sometimes other masks get chapters, but the overall focus is on her oc, which is fine, as ocs can be good. The problem isn’t conception, it’s execution.

Transphobia: Melodic decided to cast Leopard as a non-binary intersex character. It was a fair design choice, other than the fact she referred to them as a “pseudo-h*rmaphodite”, which is medically outdated, as well as the inclusion of ‘pseudo’ is more offensive than the slur alone. Leopard has biological cubs, despite most intersex (obviously not all) being infertile or unable to carry children showing a lack of research on the topic, as well as it being a very dysphoric situation for many trans and intersex people.

Leopard was referred to as a “quing”, combination “queen” and “king”. Now. Mull over it. Okay stop mulling, because she had every inch to just use “Monarch”, such as “Monarch Leopard”, as well as titles like “Their/Your Majesty”, which works for both kings and queens, so it should have been suitable for Leopard.

Unprompted, she backpedaled saying “But I wanted Leopard in my AU to be a actual female. Cause I think it's for the best. Everyone kinda hated Leopard, but I love everything she does. No not Transgender, just really a female.”. Besides the fact she took it in her own hands to decide that a mask played by Seal was ‘now a cis woman’, she implies that trans women are not women, calling cis women ‘really a female’.

In her fic, the only other trans character is Egg, who is exceptionally ambiguous to being trans, not specifying if Egg is NB, FTM, or if he as well was going to be intersex. She dedicates a chapter to pride month, yet a lot of the focus is on the cishet masks (Pap (her oc), Frog, and Fox), as well as a concerning ship of T-Rex and Poodle, as everyone knows that T-Rex is somewhat coded to be a child, since Jojo was only 16 when she performed. Despite claiming to respect trans people, she only had two trans characters, and decided that one of them wouldn’t be trans anymore because “I admired the high-pitch voice that was fitted for the Leopard, it just suits SO well. Even if the show kept going, I always hear the digital high vocals.”. Call me crazy, but that’s not a reason to make a man a cis woman.

As a trans man, Leopard was disgustingly handled in the show with the panel first week, accusing Seal of ‘tricking’ them for wearing drag and acting feminine (not acting like a woman, acting feminine), and I hoped it wouldn’t leech into the fandom. Clearly I was wrong.

Homophobia: Where to start with this. As stated, she changed Leopard from a NB intersex character (in her original canon) to a cis woman. In the fic, Leopard is married to Nick. I don’t need to tell you that she made Nick x Leopard into a straight ship. She made the only gay ship tease in the show into a straight ship. I wish it ended here.

Somali, an oc, has potential. Not here, but he has it. Somali is gay. If you think I’m undermining his character, that is his character. Somali likes magic and theater, and is very flamboyant. He is a gay walking stereotype. In his description, it is stated, “The story is that he turnout Gay, Of course Pappy was Supportive, but she knew it wasn't fair, especially through everything she's involved.” If you need me to translate: Somali broke up with Pap after realizing he was gay. Pap saw that as unfair, and that she was a victim of being lead on because he found out he was gay. Yes, Pap is making Somali being gay and dealing with his internalized homophobia… about herself. She goes to the point of calling him her nemesis. Which is a... toxic way to refer to someone who broke up with you on clean terms.

Somali eventually teams up with Rottweiler, Pap’s brother (who abuses her, despite it being out of character in every means) and is. Evil, and he hates Pap now apparently. We can’t go a minute without the gay oc being evil huh. Somali being gay doesn’t add to the story, it just suggests the only reason he stopped dating her was that he was gay (which is bad and offensive in Pap’s eyes) because he is not shown to fall for Rottweiler, or have any crushes on other male masks. His homosexuality is an accessory tag, and it’s really not a good one when he is the only gay character with a lot of lines.

Ice Cream and T-Rex are the closest ones to not be tokens, as Ice Cream has a job at a diner and T-Rex gets lines, but T-Rex is only used for exposition, and again, a child shipped with an adult mask. Peacock’s and Rabbit’s role outside of the first chapter is to have a rocky relationship, being forced to rekindle their relationship after Pap tells them to do so for a love festival. Several of the female masks are bisexual or lesbians, but they add so little to the plot, that I don’t even remember which ships are which. Every [since Leopard used to not be but is now] main character is heterosexual and cis (Pap, Fox, Leopard, Kitty, Frog, Turtle, Rottweiler) which doesn’t imply that she actually is that pro LGBT. Drawings of hers for Ice Cream and Egg are captioned “Just something Gay for you guys to see~” (fetishizing much?).

Ableism: One of the ocs in the fic is a Red Panda, who is related to Panda (don’t be confused, animal wise they are not closely related at all). In the fic, Red Panda suffers from PTSD due to an accident which caused her to be disabled in the leg, who uses a single-leg-crutch to walk. The physical disability is handled well enough, not being a hindrance or made fun of, but her personality is the worst. Red Panda is a cowardly and sniveling child, scared of her own shadow and completely incompetent. Her PTSD is very thinly written, not giving her any specific triggers or reasons for anxiety. If her PTSD was presented with her being afraid of entering a vehicle or certain smells that would relate to the accident (rubber, smoke, leather), it would make sense, but Red Panda is scared of everything. On a dare, Frog tells Kitty to impersonate a mask. Kitty impersonates Red Panda, making fun of her cowardice, which can be an actual attack on people who have PTSD (like myself), Kitty justifies herself, saying she couldn’t think of anyone else, Red Panda immediately accepting it. Being a minor character, there is no time for her to develop, and the Red Panda we were presented with is already a mess.

In the same chapter that Red Panda is introduced, Axolotl (mentioned a lot later) dares Fox to remove his prosthetic arm. I don’t need to need prosthesis to know that asking someone to take their ARM OFF is unfunny and uncalled for. Pap, Fox’s girlfriend, decided to take the time and kissed the welt, commenting that it “looked interesting”. Don’t- don’t do that. Don’t kiss people’s scars or cuts or welts or anything related to their disability, especially without permission. Axolotl was being ablest to Fox and somehow Fox didn’t know better and forgot to tell her she was acting uncivilized, despite being one of the smartest masks in the canon.

Condoning Incest: One of the ocs in the fic is an Axolotl. The axolotl is Frog’s biological sister, Frog having Turtle as his adopted brother, which in fic Turtle is stated to have been adopted in Frog’s family for over 15 years. In the axolotl’s description, it is stated “Though Axolotl is a relative of him, She deeply has a crush on him. Which maybe weird but hey, Turtle's Adopted. So not a big deal”. No, it’s not ‘ok’ because Turtle is adopted, especially since they’ve been related 15 years. It’s not like Frog and Turtle are ‘close enough to be brothers’, they are related by law. Axolotl is presented to quirkily force a kiss on Turtle in one chapter, which she is not punished or condoned for 1. Sexually harassing him 2. Committing incest and putting it on his conscience, OTHER than her getting salmonella, which all characters who kiss Turtle are prone to getting (Ice Cream in chapter was stated to have fallen sick after kissing him). Axolotl is treated completely fine and Turtle has her in his band, regardless of the fact she is predatory towards him. Additionally, Axolotl is treated as a babysitter towards all of the children on the island, despite, again, sexually harassing someone she is related to, which people saw happen.

Incest is a harmful thing that can cause people to self-deprecate themselves or worse. It’s not a quirky “ha ha, they kissed, so funny!” because Axolotl DOES want to prey on Turtle. She DOES want to be with him. She didn’t CARE about his feelings, in the moment or after. It wasn’t a cute kiss on the cheek, and it wasn’t funny.

Fetishization of Japan: Pap is a weeeeeb. Pap is stated to be Japanese (her last name being Akita) which is confusing on account of the fact Rottweiler and her family are not shown to be Japanese? Anyways, Pap uses broken Japanese, completely unsparingly, and just says it in a way she expects everyone to understand her. It’s not Engrish, she speaks English well enough, she just adds it in sentences, and Melodic doesn’t even offer translations at the end of chapters. Phrases used are arbitrary, one some reason ending with “translator”. Entire sentences can be in Japanese, making the story hard to follow. If this fetishization of the language was limited to Pap, it’d be more tolerable, but other masks, ones who have no reason to know Japanese, use it as well, equally poorly.

Xenophobia: Some reason the USA and UK masks are all good guys (other than Rottweiler) but the German masks live in a ‘badlands’. German Monster teams up with Rottweiler and is his girlfriend, while German Dragon sexually assaults Kitty when they go through the badlands. There is no rhyme or reason why they are the scapegoated ‘evil’ series, but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Inability to handle criticism: I tried. I tried my absolute best to tell her that what she was writing was harmful and past borderline offensive. I told her that Somali was a gay stereotype and very poorly presented, not getting a personality out of ‘likes singing’ (which all masks do…) and ‘is evil gay’. She didn’t care. We told her she was using slurs and that turning a mask played by Seal into a cis woman was offensive and transphobic (as well as Leopard already poorly being handled). She didn’t care.

In fact she more than didn’t care. She called us insensitive and whiny. Quote from her, "Now, I been feeling upset about some Haters/Karens harassing me on my AU ideas. And yes that's dumb.” Karens. You know, the stereotypical older women who hate the gays and trans people and bully people doing their jobs? Karens? Yeah, no. A Karen would be against any characters being trans or gay, insisting the show is for families, not telling them to stop using literal slurs (which have been outdated over 20 years) and to actually write gay characters. She genuinely acts like she can do no wrong and that everyone that doesn’t fawn over her is bad. This has nothing to do with the quality of the writing and the lack of grammar, this is about how she is unapologetically offensive and writing triggering content for the sake of being ‘quirky’.

I’m not saying “go rally against her” or “dox her” or “flame her story”, I’m suggesting please don’t give her attention. She’s clearly a child, and she’s not willing to change. All we can do is limit how much attention she gets until she grows up.

when i first watched 'the clothes don't make the turtle.' i was just. so blown away. like the show already had queercoding sprinkled in all over the place, the warren and hypno epsiode was already proudly unsubtle in what its trying to show but like,,,

that episode is what *really* cemented this show in my mind as well,, gay . here lemme grab what i had sent in a really long discord message when i was rambling about it the night i saw it

ok ok looking at some of the thoughts from that night . i got a bit into ideas about how masculinity is handled in media in general and i could cut it but i think its relevant enough.

things like donnie cheering on leo going WOO WOO in that one shot . like it could be justified as a joke about him being over the top flamboyant. but it doesn’t have that mean feeling to it at all. this whole episode felt so fucking proud . and like . i try to think a good amount about how male dominated most shows are ya kno. like how yes i love seeing casts like this show has , partially for gender envy/goals reasons but just in general , , male centric casts are the norm . thinking back on any of the cartoons we have watched together ,, with the exceptions of just a couple, there is a much higher amount of shows with mostly male casts . and this show has inherited that fact , being a remake , and in this culture in general but it still breaks gender norms in such interesting ways , at least in this ep. forget your objectifying scenes of women having a makeover scene , here’s these guys doing it . for 8 out of 11 minutes in an episode . it’s just them having fun being proud of their appearances, their identities, of *who* they are not falling into toxic masculinity and just embracing self love in a way so inherently queer they are not seeking to impress any girls in this episode . girls are not even mentioned . they are doing this for THEMSELVES even if it is partly hallucinations.

look whenever i see something that really strikes me as queer but in a more intangible sense i like to break it down and dissect it until i feel like i have a grasp on why i have that sorta reaction to things.

but yea. this show is very gay. and i love it so so much.

Okay real talk the way rottmnt’s queercoding works makes me so emotional like we have a gay main character where it’s never said that he’s gay, and there’s never any quote-unquote “proof” because romance and relationships aren’t the focus, he’s just allowed to be confident and fruity and gay and no one ever mentions it. It’s not weird, or noteworthy, this is just a gay teenager who’s allowed to be himself, and the reason he is so visible in his queerness is because he never had to hide it. He’s got the confidence of a queen because, why wouldn’t he? There’s no romantic relationships or even hints of attraction in regards to any of the main cast, but he’s still queer, because queer isn’t just as simple as attraction, it’s a community, it’s subculture, it’s a second language in much the same way he picked up snippets of spanish from Nuyorican neighborhoods. We almost never get to see characters with all the other aspects of being queer without any romantic subplots attached, a queer character that’s allowed to just. Be. And even rarer is a young gay character with all those traits, safe to be comfortable with their own identity, with all the habits and codes of someone confident in who they are and actively immersed in the subcultures.

And also Warren and Hypno are roommates.

Random Barian Headcanons

Long ass post because I didn't want to lose these

Seriously, it's random but I didn't want to lose them. Feel free to add to them if you want.

Since Nasch and Merag are technically still known as Reginald and Rio Kastle they inherited the Kastle parents' estate which included the mansion and a massive monitary portion. They both decided to be smart and invest a chunk of the money and the rest is in multiple savings accounts so they can dip into it when needed.

All of the boys got full time jobs to help with taxes, bills and to support Merag's pursuit of higher education.

The boys would die for her. She's like their mom and little sister all in one.

The boys let her take her pick of rooms first because no one wants to fight with sister/mom.

The first couple months of them living together were complete chaos. It took a while for them to understand that they were all on the same page and just trying to get by.

It took them even longer to come to realize Vector wasn't a mass murderer anymore and to kinda accept him for the mess he is.

They help each other out when needed.

Alit, Nasch, Merag, and Gilag are the only ones that can drive. Nasch only has his motorcycle, Gilag has a VW bug, Alit has a "clunky shit wagon", and Merag has (the Yu-Gi-Oh universe version of) a two door Honda Accord.

Alit's car gets passed around between himself and Nasch when he has to run errands. Nasch hates his car because it's falling apart but it still runs.

Vector is learning to drive and Gilag is teaching him. He's not bad at it and will get better with time.

Out of the four, Nasch is the best driver. He's the road trip driver whenever the seven decide to go anywhere together.

Vector and Durbe can cook basically five star meals. The first time vector actually took the time to cook, people were super shocked that it turned out amazing.

Nasch

One of those people that writes in half cursive and half print and it frustrates him.

Had a major identity crisis after the numbers war but then realized because his and Merag's souls were thrown into Reginald and Rio's bodies they lived on in a weird way. Merag coined the term "full body donation" and Nasch stuck with it. It helped him cope.

He also had trouble coming to terms with the realization that he's gay. He told Durbe first who's response was something along the lines of "Dude, I knew this entire time."

He gets super confident as he gets older and it looks good on him.

Merag

She decided to pursue higher education with the desire of becoming a nurse pratcicioner specializing in the burn unit.

She's the one that everyone goes to when there's a problem.

She can do math like nobody's business.

Can't cook to save her life

Vector

The most mentally damaged after the numbers war. Merag forced him to go to therapy to see if they could do anything. He obviously doesn't tell the entire truth to the therapist with the fear of being called insane and dropped off at a mental ward.

He got put on anti-depressants and has been doing better day by day.

The other Barians were cautious around him because mass murder and stuff but once they saw how he was struggling they all decided to keep an eye on him.

He hangs out with Yuma occasionally and they do dumb stuff. Vector enjoys the company of someone he doesn't live with

Gay AF and total bottom boy

He's not afraid to be flamboyant and it's hilarious

Gilag

He's secretly got a big heart and is very patient.

Watches trashy TV like "the real housewives" and whatever movie Allit forces him to watch.

Works the night shift of security at random museums around Heartland. He loves it because it's quiet most nights.

He has printing handwriting. The first time he left a note on the fridge Mizael thought he typed it. This caused an uproar and when he came home they made him write in front of them so he could prove that his writing is actually that pretty

He works out with Alit every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Everyone knows not to bother him when they know he's working out

The cleanest of the Barians. Everything in his room has its place and he always makes sure it gets put back.

He's straight but supports those who aren't with all his heart.

He also loves plants. He's got a lot of those too.

He cares deeply for any and all sort of animals. He rescued a box turtle he found that had a broken shell and was missing a leg.

He kept it and he adores it. It's name is "Ares" because it was a fighter from the get go.

He enjoys studying different ancient religions and societies. His favorite is roman.

He needs reading glasses and picks the larger frames because its more convenient to him.

Durbe

He writes poems and short stories in his free time but would never let anyone else know

Nasch insists that his entire personality can be defined in the phrase "washed up meme". Durbe will never admit that it's true

He can't swim but loves water

He developed a fear of heights and won't go in elevators if possible.

He loves going to the self published books on Amazon and reading the really shitty ones. He's got a collection now and it's a problem.
