the problem with writing a fantasy loosely based on a historical culture is you need to decide how "loose" you're willing to go. like yeah i know they didn't have silk but fuck you there's a literal god sitting right the fuck there and of course he would want that shit. but also would the protagonist know what the fuck a book is?
#sorry i'm bouncing between my novel and B&D's next chapter#at least we know they had cannabis#god and his weed smoking polycule#edit: btw if anyone was curious the answer is no#i'm willing to fudge some years bc fantasy but not by the thousands that separate this time period from books as we think of them#which is annoying bc linen was also not a thing yet#or it was super expensive#so guess who needs to go change a bunch of instances of the fucking word linen#every so often im struck with the question 'wait was that a thing yet?' and it's like a 50/50 shot i need to rewrite something because of i#probs closer to 80/20 because even if it exists it exists in a much different context#like the linen thing#at least it makes some good jumping off points for learning about history#nothing like asking what sorts of dates (fruit) would have been available and in what season to send you down the rabbit hole#and find out scientists revived the extinct judean date palm with 2000 year old seeds#and the fruit tastes like honey#big fan of the fact the first one that they were able to grow was a male and they named him Methuselah

I think the other thing i love about Conclave is some of my favorite poets and writers are queer people who are/have been profoundly devoutly religious like the moment i found out benjamin alire sáenz went to monastery and was on track to becoming a priest before becoming a writer I was just like "Aha! That's what it fucking was, that's where this philosophical torturous burden and deep empathy for others I'm feeling from your work comes from" deeply intellectually curious devout clergymen are such interesting people, its delicious, you cant get that shit from anywhere else
#or like james baldwin#they always have some kind of deal like truly never not fascinating#and then there is also the connection between one's craft being linked to godliness and needing things to be extremely well made#the devotion to extremely well constructed custom garments and pressed linens and food and ink and wax seals and painstaking paintings#gay af honestly - the catholic OBSESSION with aesthetics and creation and suffering for art#makes me want to write an essay on this movie#also wonder how this would feel if i wasnt catholic and didnt speak a romance language which meant i didnt need subtitles at all#like what if i didnt know the sins or the papal selection process or about the flame/smoke#conclave 2024#conclave

hey babes remember this project
(yeah neither do I it's been months and months) (who wants to make a wool coat in the height of summer anyway)
But! The last weeks have been rainy and too cool for July/August, and reminded me that autumn is right around the corner and Christmas will be here sooner than I think.
I actually finished weaving sometime in spring, I don't remember when exactly; didn't make an occasion out of it. I made 3 lengths of fabric total
... which, as it turns out is Quite A Bit! Look at that stack :) You have no idea how satisfying it was to hold all that in my arms.
Return of the King for scale
Each of these is about 55cm wide, and 230cm long which is insane, considering that I started out with a 4.5m warp. Granted, about 40-50cm of that are wasted on the loom and another 10% or so loss has to be calculated in (because of course the warp doesn't stay straight, it goes around the weft which means it becomes shorter) AND the threads being wool they have a lot of stretch to them. But still, that's a lot of shrinking, for a fabric that's still loose enough to fray. No wonder clothing was valuable as fuck, it's not even the amount of work that goes into it, but the portion of that work that's essentially wasted. And if I had wanted to make a tight fabric, an actual broadcloth, I would have had to calculate in a lot more shrinking.
I finished this in the washing machine (I think 30°c with no spin cycle and no detergent? But I'm not sure about thaz, I forgot 59nwrite it down I think). Then I gave each piece a lanolin bath. I may have overdone it a little? Some of the wool feels a tiny bit - well not exactly greasy but soapy. Whatever. It does improve the wool's hydrophobic properties and makes it feel a little softer.
And all the pieces fit!
This was very satisfying
I did not, however, have enough of the lilac linen that I originally wanted to use for lining. So I bought another fabric, the only one I could find that I liked: A very, very lightweight brown linen.
The listing: This is very light and transparent! Me, opening the package:..... oh wow, I didn't know it would be this light and transparent
I hope it will work. There's only one way to find out.
That's all I have for now! I have cut out the front and back pieces, and now it's just sewing, sewing, sewing.
#I am determined to finish this thing this year#I actually quite like the linen gauze the wool is already so heavy it might b good to have smth that doesn't add much weight#& i still have the lilac for pockets#wizard bathrobe adventures#crafts#look what i made#handweaving

Hey y'all! Do you have any recommendations for things to do or not do when sewing clothing? Basically, where to start? I've made doll clothes and a few skirts for my nieces, but I don't wear skirts or dresses and I am doing fine on pajama pants, so I think the like easiest thing for me to start with will be shorts? Probably like quilting cotton, elastic waist super simple ones, I just don't know a good pattern to try and don't know enough about clothing patterns to know how to pick a good pattern
#the person behind the yarn#I mean a couple pairs of like cotton or linen-ish shorts (if I can find any linen) with like patch pockets would be great#but I think my ideal item of clothing would honestly be like just-below-knee length shorts#but the poofy kind? that has like an elastic gather at the bottom?#like somewhere between joggers and ren-faire-ish pants#full range of motion! large pockets! will stay in place when I Move Weirdly as I am apt to do!#those are on my list to make someday#it would also be cool to have a machine washable poofy pirate-y shirt#except I know I strongly dislike wearing long sleeves because I get them caught on things#or inevitably just push them up above my elbows#idk if there's a sleeve equivalent of those just-below-the-knee pants?#those are longer term goals I'm starting more reasonably: shorts

Does anyone have any recommendations for easy beginner sewing projects, specifically for simple clothes? (preferably items so simple you can draft it yourself or there's a free pattern available)
I'm trying real hard to break out of my decision paralysis
#sewblr#sewing#clothes making#idk what else to tag to get sewists' attention 😭#I am currently looking at apron tutorials so i can make one for mum's christmas present#but i would like to have another lined up after this#so i dont just stop at one thing because my brain's like well ''that's enough dont need to do more''#i have mostly linen and cotton fabric so i cant really do something with stretchy fabric rn

The best thing about Italy and Europe is that linen just- exists here. I can go buy a shitty cheap 100% linen dress like I would go to Fry's and buy a shitty cheap 100% polyester dress in America. Absolutely revolutionary for my wardrobe. I can't actually buy wardrobe enhancements because I have a carry-on suitcase, but the fact I still have the option is amazing.
#I can't wear polyester because something about my sweat clings to the fibers. I can only wear >60% natural fibers. I've slowly been#weaning all poly out of my wardrobe. The restriction helps a lot preventing impulse buys; but here my impulse buy is only restricted by $$#i am absolutely not crying over the $350 linen women's suit jacket I saw :( UGH it was GORGEOUS and GREEN. I want a linen suit so bad#but honestly it's the kind of thing I should just spend a thousand on and get bespoke I think. It'd look better and feel classier#if you're spending that much money on a thick linen knit in the first place.#Okay tag essay: but can we talk about linen knit fabrics? I've seen so many beautiful linen weaves this weekend I'm losing my mind.#I think there was a kind of Tricot or Bird's Eye knit linen simple-curve dress that blew me away. The amount of work you can do with#two colors and a fashionable knit is insane. Then you wear a jacket over it and the linen is still light enough to wick away sweat but#heavy enough to look fashionable and stay flat. There's really this talented balance of texture that shines in linen. I love linen so much#Anyway! I should've made another post for this but none of these ramblings are important lol#I'm really tired after Anacapri. and dinner. Dinner was kind of dumb. There was confusion about what I wanted. We just wanted#appetizers to share but they gave me a whole plate of octopus. Which I feel bad about eating and don't like the texture after 10 bites.#So I had to give it to dad. Long story short I didn't want to eat anything at all; I wanted to WRITE. But I didn't write. I ate.#I'm already like 10 pounds heavier than when I left lmfao. It's starting to pack on my hips. Damn you Italy!#ptxt

bought some fabric (that i did not need) because it reminded me of tree bark
what should i do with it? my first instinct is a corset, but i also think a skirt could be fun? maybe.... a tree themed outfit/costume....
im not sure how much i have because i bought it as a piece by weight, but i think its a couple meters!! ill measure it when i get home
#i think i need to not jump to corset every time i think of a fun project BUT. tree corset could be fun#there was another piece and i Sorta regret not getting it but also. i shouldn't have bought THIS#i probably have enough to make whatever i want anyway it seems like itll be a decent piece#it was also 'curtain' fabric so it might be wide too#but its gonna be a totally fine weight for a garment so idc#it was the most expensive piece too. as it always is#(the other two things were directly for planned projects. tho the linen look i didnt neeeeeeed)

my list of hyper-fixations is like a refined gentleman of great affluence.
Linen
Chinese silks (mostly guandong silk)
fountain pens + inks
art history
handmade watercolors
film cameras
long wool coats
#i really don't get too caught up in media stuff for the most part#its like oh yeah i'll enjoy this thing and get inspired by it but typically i wouldnt say im like focused on it#there was a period of time where i was like dedicated to learning as much about linen as i could and i would say that was hyperfocused#and not just an interest

sukuna being ancient is also him readdy to kill everybody then himself when he sees you going out with something that by FAR does NOT cover your ankles. like full on short skims dress and he’s just flabberghasted
asdjkjlfajlksdflasdjkfas man genuinely thinks unless the clothing is three layers stacked and tied with an obi you're essentially walking around in your undergarments......... and there's no way. youre some kind of "scandalous whore," right???
and don't even bother trying to explain shit like mixed fabrics to him. he hisses seeing you come home just in shorts and flips flops... the concept of polyester would kill him AGAIN on top of all that.
this man acts like he's such hot shit meanwhile u might as well start buying him butter pecan ice cream while you're out, too
#sukuna#just bc i was texting my mom about my grandma's butter pecan obsession...#anyway i was literally just starting on a paragraph about him being confused about modern clothing LMFAOOO#specially business casual wear bc WHAT DO YOU MEAN WOMEN HAVE TO WORK????#this is not his japan !!!!!!!!!#LMFAO HE'S SO FUNNY he's such a loser honestly like sir#someone get him a playboy magazine and a cigarette and some good linen sheets it will fix him i promise#love u anon mwah#caitie things#anon

how it feels to want to dress very fancy and accessoried but unfortunately have the autism where i think im supposed to just be lounging in a field naked or in like. a plain linen dress. and any accessory or makeup or nail polish or ehat have you makes me want to rip my skin off
#cant wear rings bc they make my fingers feel heavy cant wear bracelets bc they move when i dont want them to same with necklaces cant wear#dangly earrings bc they r heavy cant wear small earrings bc they poke me sometimes and also headphones and also my ears r only barely#pierced. cant wear makeup bc it makes my face feel fake and also im bad at it and also would only wear it in weird freak ways cant wear#nail polish bc if it isnt perfectly smooth or chips At all i have to rip it off. cant wear tight or fitted clothes bc they restrict movemen#cant wear super loose flowy clothes bc sometimes the fabric bunches up weird. this is the hell im in#i just have to like. pick my bsttles. bc every clothing is slightly stressing but i can like. sometimes handle having more of the things#like if its a rly good day and a bunch of other autism specifications r met i can handle wearing a bracelet. but if one thing goes wrong i#start getting so insanely overstimulated -_-#bc do you know how difficult it is that i want to wear like. historical dresses. and other very structured clothing#but to also know that i get insanely stressed out wearing anything other than loose pants and big shirt. and even loose oants and big shirt#sometimes stresses me. im like currently being stressed out bc my sports bra (only type of bra i can wear) is a little bit too tight. UGH#idk. maybe magically like an 1890s gown is exactly the type of clothing that would suit my delicate idiot constitution. i wouldnt know#also disclaimer i couldnt be lounging in a field naked or wearing a short linen frock bc im fucking allergic to some varieties of grass. and#i get itchy. -_-

guess who got folklore print fabric to make a folk dress skirt
#I've just prewashed it and also pulled some fabrics from my stash for the lining#I'm gonna make a really simple skirt#like REALLY simple - should take me maybe a week or so to make it completely by hand#and that's including all the other shit I have to do lmao#now I need to find a cute fabric to make a simple top out of#and also get some more linen for undergarments#and I GUESS I'll need an apron at some point#(but first I need to decide what style/era I'm actually going for lmao. I'm thinking roughly late-19thcentury-working-lady but also idk)#OH and I'll need some tie on pockets#it's a good thing I'm in no rush#though I'd like to have an outfit by summer#to wear at my exhibit and also just generally at events

ive spent the last 24 hours in a haze of reading momfluenced and scrolling through the instagrams of all the momfluencers the book mentions and ohhhh my god I have to delete instagram and fling my phone in the river when I’m a parent. you know how being a communist with a weird gender lets you see through the matrix of social constructs sometimes? these ladies are patching the matrix back up with cute gingham as fast as I can tear it down
#does that make sense. like. the thing I’ve found most personally clarifying about leftism is the ability to hear someone tell you#‘life is hard’ or about the contradictions of capitalism and realize it doesn have to be this way#but momfluencers are so squarely of this moment in capitalism and in misogyny and at the same time what they’re selling can be attractive#you know.#my posts#reading tag#and unfortunately I do like the momfluencer aesthetic. not the minimalism but I like linen and chunky pottery and sage green and wood. u kno
