i actually wanted to move this out of tags because i don’t think i’ve seen it anywhere else but i just wanted to say how tickled and slightly emotional i am that zach hyman picked number 18 to wear with the oilers. in jewish tradition the number 18 is one with a lot of symbology and corresponds to the hebrew word for “alive,” chai (the eighth and tenth letters of the alphabet are chet and yud) and it’s considered good luck. for bar/bat mitzvahs and weddings it’s traditional to give gifts in multiples of 18 to wish someone good luck and life. considering zach’s background (like. jewish high school lmao), if he was actually allowed to pick this number and wasn’t assigned it, i can’t believe this wasn’t deliberate and kind of fitting for a new beginning.
#EVERY BODY BE CALM#EVERY BODY BE CALM BE COOL BE COOL BE COOL#I MIGHT HAVE TO GO CRAZY AND BUY AN OILERS JERSEY HELLO ?#zach hyman#edmonton oilers#i’m about to make an Extremely Silly purchase

Sept. 29, 1994 - Montreal, CAN – Montreal Canadiens defenseman Mathieu Schneider sports a “Bettman Sucks” label on his head at a team practice Thursday in Montreal. The label refers to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman who may lock out NHL players sometime between a conference called for this evening, Thursday Sept. 29, 1994 and the Saturday deadline for a settlement in the labor dispute.

Me nodding along to your tags on that post about Hanukkah and assimilation: you’re right and you should say it
i’m glad at least one person could make some sense out of that, thank you.
#also sorry you sent this several days ago my bad#anyone else thinkin bout hanukkah this year and just -sadly sings the sufganiyot song to self-#that may be an extremely specific example but the mood is what matters#anyways. the tension between myself and not knowing if it’s ok to publish asks or if the person wants me to answer privately#thecookieoftroy

like sorry to make another post about this but the older i get the more it bothers me, the point of chanukkah is that it’s about the refusal to assimilate into the dominant culture even in the face of violent force. traditionally you don’t even get presents, you only get small amounts of gelt/money; it’s not mentioned in the torah, it’s a minor holiday. so the irony of it getting blown out of proportion so jewish kids don’t feel left out about christmas just really grinds my fuckin goat. it’s a nice holiday and it’s fun and wintery but the point of it has gotten lost in the commercialism chaff. like you think the macabees would fuck with “mensch on a bench” or chanukkah bushes? lmao (also the fact that the maccabees were kind of violent extremists is another thorny issue all on its OWN but that’s probably another level we do not need to get into today)
i think that’s why the posts from non-jews (when you barely see anything about any other holiday, even the really important ones) bug me so much. like it’s obviously well-intentioned but it completely misses the point and does absolutely zero to learn about the actual religion. it’s not just jewish fucking christmas.
anyway welcome to my hockey sideblog where today i will be lecturing you about assimilation
#my own family is maybe quite guilty of this assimilation#by extension of christmas maybe? like. especially the younger generation where every year there’s almost more pressure#to be part of ~the holidays~#idk i’m just saying my family definitely has treated hanukkah as an excuse to gather during this time like everyone else#like i would never look down on other jews for getting hyped for hanukkah bc my family certainly has#but the thing about this that bothers me more than any other year#and by ‘this’ i mean like. seeing goyim wish me a happy hanukkah.#is the. like. complete lack of compassion and understanding during yom kippur#among other holy days but like. jewish people don’t get time off work for our holidays#not even the most important ones. and hearing christians (and like. christian adjacent atheists) get upset about ‘missing’ christmas#when they couldn’t have given a shit about any other religion and their struggles#idk how this all ties together i think what i’m trying to say is#i can feel the palpable falsity of someone wishing me a happy hanukkah but knowing nothing about any other holy day#and that falsity has never been more clear to me than it is now because#christians have proven that they believe they are genuinely more important than any other religion#because they should be the exception to the rules of public health and safety#and if they cannot get a pass to celebrate christmas then they have to right to disregard the rules anyway#IDK this really ran away from me. in conclusion: good post amanda
