So I looked at the live action nadder and thought “not bad but also not great”

Then I looked at all the nadder designs we got over the years: the original, the animatronic and the live action. Specifically their heads

And that made me realize what I find so off-putting about the new one:

The mouth is less beak like, the horn on the nose is *massive* for some reason and the horns on stormfly‘s head are smaller and also just slightly curved. Which yeah, not a big deal, but it just...wasn't hitting the way the original design did for me. So I tried to make my own version of what I'd make the live action version look like (although this is just like a base concept, so not as spiky, or colored accurately and stuff; it's more about the general look):

I wanted to keep the beak but...gotta give it to the live action, it just didn't work out. I did like the bigger nose horn *however* i would have made it more similar to the animatronic's. I also would have kept the larger horns on the head, they make the dragon look far more imposing in my opinion. Also bigger nostrils. These are tracker class dragons for fucks sake, make them look like it! And something that annoys me on all of the live action designs: the teeth. I don't care if it's "unrealistic", these are dragons! All the dragons have these small teeth and i really wish they had kept at least some of them bigger, even if it's just for the look of it

I think that I've only drawn Ford like. 3 times in my entire life. so here's some Fordsy (and some Fiddsy. and a Bill I guess)

learned something about myself lately

#i dont think its even the fact almost all my characters are somewhat beasts in one way or another. i just #really like tails and wish i had one myself #and then my oc designs are a little tame theyre mostly human shaped with animal features. but they always have tails #my eyes have recently been opened to the appeal of long whiplike unicorn tails.. so flowy and curly #something about the tuft at the end being long and swirly just does something for me..#maybe it would make sense to change auggies tail shape so it looks like a meteor. her design is mainly pink with hot pink accent #so it would be cool to use that and orange to make it look like a fire meteor.. maybe itll help complement the blue/green in her design #head full of ocs today so expect a ramble later #if i had a tail i think it would be long with a kink. so it kind of folds over once but not in a curl #when it wags its kind of a swaying motion. i have thought about this a normal amount #yapping

One thing I noticed that interested me was that the Nine Headed Demon's magic has no shape, unlike the most other magical characters.

I assume this is because it is tied to Chaos, but then I realized that I don't believe we see Macaque use geometric magic either, and the ending of season implies he has some times to chaos.

do you have any good resources for drawing rodent heads? your blog has had me buzzing with ideas again and I'm currently charging my tablet for the first time in ages. Thanks in advance!

this is the only advice I can give you right now

I'll always recommend the book The art of animal drawing by Ken Hultgren! I believe they had sections on mice, squirrels, and rabbits (not rodents but some anatomy can be similar) unfortunately I don't have any online resources.

#I think probably the main thing I see that sometimes makes rodents read as not super rodent-y #Is having a snout with a mouth in front like a dog's #Whereas rodents usually have their mouths a little more under their heads #And they're less head + snout and more just cleanly wedge shaped #I think having that look can work with some stylizations and still read as a rodent but if you're going for a more toony look
