Welcome to A Gathering of the Greatest Gumshoes! During this month-long event, I’ll be counting my Top 31 Favorite Fictional Detectives, from movies, television, literature, video games, and more!

SLEUTH-OF-THE-DAY’S QUOTE: “There’s an old saying: ‘Don’t change anything. Ever.’”

Number 12 is…Adrian Monk, from Monk.

“Monk” premiered in 2002, at a time when I often feel good old-fashioned detective shows were on their way out, at least in the United States. Classic series like “Murder, She Wrote” and “Columbo” were nearing the end of their respective runs, and more and more people were gravitating towards what might be termed crime drama rather than Whodunnit storylines and Sherlock-Holmes-esque antics. With that said, it’s remarkable that Monk lasted as long as it did. The show ran for seven full years of straight television airtime, and was even briefly revitalized for a TV movie spin-off just last year: proof that the show’s legacy has not faded away, even after it ended nearly 15 years prior. Considering the final episode of the series broke the world record for the most viewings in cable television history at the time (a record which has, I should clarify, since been surpassed), it’s clear the series struck a chord with audiences.

I think a big part of the reason why comes from the title character: Adrian Monk himself. Monk is one of the funniest and most interesting detective characters in television history, in my opinion. He was a very different kind of sleuth, some would argue, compared to many popular detectives of the past. The humor of Monk, you see, is different from that of characters like the aforementioned Columbo or Sherlock Holmes. In those cases, these were characters who, for better or worse, everyone knew could get the job done. If they did have a silly side, it was usually either a façade to hide their inner steel, or it came from their own passions creating chaos for those around them. Monk is slightly in the latter category, but in a different way. Monk, you see…is a man who lives in fear of his own shadow. And I don’t think I mean that entirely figuratively. Sometime before the start of the series, you see, he lost his wife in a mysterious car bombing incident. The event caused an already mentally fragile Adrian to have a complete nervous breakdown, and he still hasn’t quite come out of it. As a result, Adrian Monk has become a man who is paranoid about just about everything around him. He’s a hypochondriac, has severe OCD, and his mind contains more phobias than you can really list in any concise way. Some are rational, but many are completely unfounded. He’s scared of snakes, needles, heights, enclosed spaces…even MILK he looks at with a sense of dread. Milk, I say! And that’s just to name a few!

The humor of Monk, as a result, comes from watching this man battle his own constant fear of the UNIVERSE, as he panics his way through every situation, fretting and fussing and cowering even as he scopes out scenes and picks out clues. It’s not surprising that his enemies underestimate him or that others around him get annoyed, because he’s not just pretending to be a buffoon: he’s legitimately just a constant wreck! However, through all the goofiness this setup presents – and there is a LOT of goofiness to be found – Monk is NOT an idiot. All of his overwhelming fears and nervous habits come from a very sad and fundamentally broken place, and there are times, throughout the series, where Monk shows not only a tragic vulnerability, but also a sort of inner fire and strength. When the situation calls for it, Adrian can be brought out of his shell, and shows there’s a lot more to him than just a whimpering clown. I think this is the crux of what makes the character so much fun to watch: we know he isn’t faking all this lunacy, but we also know that, at the end of the day, Monk will make the right choice, and will find some way of bringing the criminals involved in any case to justice. Many actors were considered for the role of Monk, a lot of them really big names. Some include Alfred Molina, Stanley Tucci, and the late John Ritter. In the end, the role went to Tony Shalhoub, who was sort of an actor-on-the-rise at the time. It was Monk that made Shalhoub recognized nationwide, however, and is the role he is likely best known for to this day. It’s not hard to see way: Shalhoub handles every scene absolutely perfectly, making Adrian just as sympathetic and heroic as he is absolutely ridiculous. The result is one of the most wonderfully comedic, but still competent and fascinating, characters in detective fiction, in my opinion. From battles with Tim Curry to solving the case of his late wife’s murder to trying to figure out if he’s scared of blankets or not (yes, really), Adrian Monk may not be the bravest of super sleuths…but he's certainly one of the greatest.

What other fears do they have?

peppino struggles with scrupulosity and fears being evil. his dad and grandpa used to say he looked and acted like some bad guy's hired muscle when he was a young man because he was an arrogant foolhardy brute, and it really got to him. he's internally prone to ensuring his actions align to his moral code and behaving as he feels a hero ought to, even if he views himself as a failed hero.

Why do they have these fears? Are these fears innate, trauma-based, or generational?

a mix of all three. one of his innate fears is deep water and pepp's never been a strong swimmer, so he avoids bodies of water bigger than a bathtub as a rule ( swimming in pasta / boxes of old pizzas is a different matter entirely, obviously ). his fairly traumatic tour of service and the death of his twin brother right in front of him left him an absolute mess of neurosis. and i think being raised by a family of famous heroes instilled in him certain fears of straying from the heroic code of honor laid out by his ancestors and of the monsters they've fought for generations. while he tries to judge everyone based on their own merits and how much harm / inconvenience they're actually causing him in the present, he's wary of beings like pizzaface / pizzahead on principle due to his family's history of encounters with beings like the pizzamancer.

he's faced them like he faces every problem in his life: head - on, fists swinging. he's had mixed results, obviously; he's still a very volatile and anxiety - prone person, but he's not completely unable to function like he used to be. so. progress!

I won't negotiate with the evil that has been trying to kill me my whole life, but you can die for it right now!

I have never been able to drive to any predictable means, but when no transportation is around I I might attempt to drive because the police patrol to take me to hospital, and cars have shot guns position that I perfer because a driver is not the dangerous one because weapons don't need insurance, but the police don't like me with the shoot gun position so I am always able to get the back seat I perfer their company despite a bus having far more space. yet I am free to ride in the back of police patrol vehicle because I won't ride a bus because the privilege to kill people is not worth while because it is wrong you judge a clown who has little to no confidence "failure wish" is a problem of my existence because I didn't fail in to kill my biological mother becuase And uncomfortable thief in the wound can still enough resources.To understand the nature of resources to have caused my mother death's in the womb because if I didn't cost resources of my mother sbe would not. have died. Understand I hate anyone who demands a fetus pay for insurance to protect her and you in the womb as a pedestrian won't be fascist like you!

When I felt ethical obligation to avoid expenses of our government to get over driving issues I didn't think of my self-worth rhat hate your vehicles enough to suffer temptation to destroy them, and I did try to over come my hardship before I got disability because I needed a job and so I did try to before but when I am learning to drive it is not pragmatic for any dependable use because a few minutes use or 8 miles to and from work is one ride because it was never used to go to work again!

The first attempt to handle drivng to go some place to attempt to have confidence but Performance anxiety can create mental health issues but typical my confidence reaches panic and second attempt typical panics so bad my mind creates the ethical argument and increased phobia because I can't swin and don't jump fearing weights and I fear needles and blood shed because I am not murse, it is not ethical right to change my phobia, don't pretend you can't drop dead to my solution that I am free because you are not free to attempt man slaughter n your negligence because I don't you therefore don't commit homicide because your guilty of thr attempt every time until drop.dead from your unhealthy behavior so die aleady I am not patience to care.

I have a severe phobia of needles and have to get my COVID vaccine tomorrow so here’s how I think some one piece boys would react to their s/o having a panic attack over needing a shot.

Boys the cave and don’t make you get it

Ace- he knows it important but seeing you cry breaks his heart. He just can’t handle seeing you so distressed. Holds you tight telling you “it’s ok babe, you don’t have to.”

Sanji- no ones going near his Princess/prince with a needle. How dare you make (y/n)-swan cry you monster! Makes you your favorite comfort food to calm you down.

Luffy- “well why the hell do you have to get one if you don’t want to? Chopper stop scaring (y/n)!” No one can explain why you need to have a shot. He’s not going to let anyone do anything that makes you upset.

Franky- crying as soon as he sees you cry.

Eustass Kid- fucking pissed. “You coward it’s just a little needle! Damn idiot if it scares you such much just don’t do it!” Can’t emotionally process seeing you so distressed

Zoro- one little shot can’t be the important right? It’s your body if you don’t want to he won’t force you. Can’t think of any other way to get you to stop crying. He hates seeing you cry.

Buggy the clown - probably also scared of needles so he gets it.

Comforts you but makes you get it

Sabo - he hates to see you like this but your health is more important! Has you sit in his lap and holds you tight as the doctor gives you your shot. Wanna go get ice cream? You deserve some ice cream.

Ussop- he’s get it, he probably understands how you’re feeling better than anybody but your health is important. He’ll hype you up telling you how tough you are! A tiny needle is no match for the mighty (y/n)! Distracts you with stories while the doctor give you the shot. He’s so proud of you after! You’re a total badass for facing your fears!

Marco - as a doctor he knows you need to get this shot but he’s also sympathetic to his you’re feeling. Assures you that your fear is normal and it doesn’t make you weak but you do need to be brave for him.

Doffy - He wants to cave and let you have your way but protecting you and your health is more important. You’ll do it for him right? Let’s you cry and shake in his lap as the best doctor in Dressrosa gives you your shot.

Katakuri - This man is so soft but his patients can run out. You have to have this shot but it’s ok he’s right here. He’s a comforting but firm. Holds you tight and has you keep your eyes on him. His experience comforting countless little siblings shines through and he’s there to hold you after and tell you how brave you are. You’re definitely getting a treat after.

What are The gym leaders + hop and Leon scared of if they were in a phobia challenge?

Aoooo this is another interesting one. Sorry this took so long I really had to think on it I wasn’t really sure what you meant by phobia challenge so I just went with what everyone’s biggest fears are. 

Milo-  Arachnophobia  (fear of spiders) Most are bug types and death to his specialty but mostly he doesn’t do well after an incident in the Wild Area where he crashed face-first into a Joltik in its web

Nessa-  Athazagoraphobia (fear of being forgotten) she has always wanted to make a splash and to make sure her name was forever remembered in history it’s why she works so hard at her modeling and gym leading careers

Kabu-  Atychiphobia (fear of failure) He strives for the best and when he doesn’t succeed he begins putting himself under so much pressure that he ends up making his fears come true. Its why he was in the minor leagues for a while. The fear has gotten better with age but it still lingers on particularly hard days. 

Bea-  Belonephobia (fear of pins and needles) she always had to be bribed to get shots as a child with sweets and even now she can’t look at the needle or else she will faint. She doesn’t talk about it. The only people who know are her family, Alister, and Opal (because she knows everything) 

Alister- Scopophobia (the fear of being seen or stared at) his mask actually helps with this fear because it doesn’t feel as much like they are staring right at him. But it does say several times in-game that this is a huge fear of people looking at his face and is why he wears his mask. 

Opal-  Gamophobia (fear of marriage) it’s a fear she had more in her youth than now, but she just couldn’t stand the idea of getting married and feeling like she belonged to someone and losing her identity. It terrified her honestly that she would meet someone she loved enough to give up her sense of autonomy. But now she’s older and has lived her life so it doesn’t bother her nearly as much anymore. 

Bede-  Autophobia (fear of being alone) He grew up in an orphanage and he essentially snapped when Rose abandoned him. I think it’s safe to say he has some separation anxiety issues. 

Gordie-  Coulrophobia (fear of clowns) I don’t know why I have it stuck in my head that he had a bad birthday experience with a clown trying to make him laugh but he just felt like it was out to get him, but I’m going with it. 

Melony- Acrophobia (fear of heights) she just likes her feet firmly planted on the ground thank you very much. She has to cover her eyes when she takes a Corvinknight taxi or she keeps yelling at her co-passengers to stop shaking the carrier when it’s just wind turbulence. 

Piers-  Nosocomephobia (fear of hospitals) He is pretty empathetic and just can’t stand the weight that surrounds a lot of hospitals. Plus with his and Marnie’s parents out of the picture, it’s possible he might associate hospitals with that

Marnie-  Tonitrophobia (fear of Thunder) it’s just so loud and she can’t help but think something bad would happen every time it makes the Spikemuth roof shake. Piers tries to sing and play songs for her to drown out the noise. Again gotten better with age but she does still jump from time to time. 

Raihan- Kind of want to say he’s too dumb to have fear but that is a lie  Dentophobia (fear of dentist) I just don’t see him too keen at the idea of someone poking at his chompers and scraping his teeth and the sound of the tools, gross. He goes to a dentist that knocks him out to do cleaning and maintenance. 

Leon-  Hypochondria (The fear of illness) he doesn’t like the idea of getting sick and not being at 100% when so many people count on him. So he is the kind of guy to wear a mask when it’s flu season and he has to be somewhere crowded or uses hand sanitizer when someone sneezes/coughs then shakes his hand. 

Hop- He fears disappointing others (couldn’t find an official name) especially his brother. There are so many people counting on him and it does make him question his actions a lot of times and how they will reflect on Leon and Sonia.

I was actually in the process of redesigning my OCs when I saw the post (thanks to Sims inspiration and wanting to update how I draw them), so it was perfect timing! Guilty Pleasures: She loves taking bubble baths. Bring on the bath bombs and fragrant soaps, and the (pink) rubber ducky is a must! She also loves stuffed animals (especially pandas). And it surprises a lot of people, but she’s also an avid fan of anime/manga and video games.

Phobias: Accidentally losing one of her earrings, which keep her balanced. She’s particularly afraid of what she might do if this happens, because she loses control of herself and becomes truly evil. A past experience in regards to this also makes her uncomfortable around sheep. (Even toys or drawings of sheep. She will get a flashback and start sobbing, apologizing to the ‘poor sheepies’ until they’re out of sight.)

What They Would Be Famous For: Probably owning the only fashion-themed amusement park in the Ego World, or her fashion designs.

What They Would Get Arrested For: Being a public nuisance, like getting too hyper and making too much noise. Because honestly, if someone told her to shut up she would only get louder to spite them. She’s not afraid to get in a fight though, so maybe that too… Maybe for throwing a heel at someone. lol

OC Most Likely To Murder Them: It. He gets along with Pan better than Aurora, but he can only take so much of her 'hyper hyper happy happy joy joy’ personality.

Favorite Movie/Book Genre: romance and rom-coms. The blossoming love between two people! The heartbreaking 'is this it?’ fights! The oblivious misunderstandings! Burnt dinners! The hand holding, the hugs, the kisses…! (You get it.)  

Least Favorite Movie/Book Cliche: When everything turns out to be a dream. Her Host loves this cliche. She hates it because 'what was the point of it all if it never really happened?!’

Talents and/or Powers: She’s a talented fashion designer. She likes to draw, like her Host, but when she became interested in clothes when she was younger she was frustrated that she couldn’t wear the clothes she drew. So she learned how to sew and began making her own clothes. She’s also very imaginative and ambitious.

Why Someone Might Love Them: She’s fun to be around, always a bouncing ball of energy! She likes pretty things, and considers everyone around her to be pretty in their own way. She’s the person who will convince you to try that new thing, or who will say 'Let’s go somewhere, my treat!’ when she sees you need cheering up. She’s also ready to kick ass if anyone dares hurt her friends or loved ones.

Why Someone Might Hate Them: She’s so hyper… Some people might find her hyperness endearing, but some people find it exhausting. She’s also had people judge her before based on her girly-ness, interest in fashion, and how she looks like a typical anime girl, but she doesn’t let it bother her.  

How They Change: She hasn’t changed all that much since I first created her back in middle school. She’s grown a lot more mature emotionally, I think, and she’s more careful about other people’s feelings.

Why You Love Them: She was the last of my Egos to be created, and she’s probably the best representation of who I wish I was. She’s daring, outspoken, bubbly, made a career for herself doing something she loves… I love her because even though that’s not me and probably never will be me, I still like to think that she’s cheering me on. “Don’t be afraid! You can do it!” lol

Guilty Pleasures: He has a collection of weird t-shirts that he’s both bought and designed himself. He also has a collection of light sabers that he may or may not have bought off the Ego World’s black market that trades in Other World (Worlds of Licensed Series) objects…

Phobias: Becoming a soft goody two-shoes like Aurora… Gag.

What They Would Be Famous For: Nothing. He’s too lazy to really stand out much. And he’s fine with that.

What They Would Get Arrested For: Disrupting the peace. He’s got a temper, and when it flares he’s liable to kick/hit any object unlucky enough to be in his way. Be it a trash can, car, mailbox… He’s broken his toes for kicking a brick wall before. He’s also got problems with authority figures since he doesn’t like being told what to do, so if the police show up it would just escalate the situation. There was also the time he bombed Aurora’s house, but that was years ago, when he was jealous he wasn’t my only Ego anymore. He was a lot more evil back then, and Aurora (being the kind soul she is and understanding how he felt) didn’t press charges.

OC You Ship Them With: Apocothea. She keeps him in check and doesn’t put up with his crap, yet somehow sees the… best… in him…?

OC Most Likely To Murder Them: Pandora. She gets fed up with his gloomy outlook on life and gets cranky when he gives her attitude. They get into lots of arguments over nothing, especially with their quick tempers.

Favorite Movie/Book Genre: Horror/Suspense. He likes movies with lots of jumpscares, gore, and freaky nightmarish scenarios. They get his blood pumping and while he’s not that evil enough to enjoy people getting hurt, he likes to think about what he would do if he was trapped in that house trying to escape the serial killer. And of course, though he’s not a clown or even named after said clown, he likes Stephen King novels.

Least Favorite Movie/Book Cliche: It was love at first sight. He doesn’t believe in it, and if he sees that cliche he skips a few minutes past it or turns a few pages ahead, hopefully to a less mushy scene.

Talents and/or Powers: He’s great at video games. He actually earns money by playing video games for people who get stuck on them. They send him the game, he plays past the part they got stuck on to the next save, he sends it back. He’s been debating lately if he should start livestreaming, but his laziness in acquiring the equipment and setting up a room for it is currently holding him back.

Why Someone Might Love Them: He’s… It. lol He’s an Alter Ego who by all means should be trying to take over the world and plotting evil deeds, but either due to his laziness or from the influence of those closest to him, he just isn’t that into it. He’s just a cranky man that loves to kick over trash cans in my Sims game. lol

Why Someone Might Hate Them: He rubs a lot of people the wrong way, and with good reason. He’s not very social not because he’s shy but because he hates people in general. He comes off as rude when you first meet him, and he likes to glare for no reason. (He probably thinks it makes him look tough.) Honestly it’s a wonder people like him.

How They Change: He’s changed quite a bit since I first created him in middle school! He’s probably the most changed of all my OCs. At first he started out as a wolf demon, but after a few weeks he became my Alter Ego in a human form and stayed that way. He still has fangs, they’re just smaller. They serve no purpose, he just looks good with them! He’s also not as evil as he used to be, but like I said, I like to think that Pan and Aurora are a good influence on him.

Why You Love Them: He was my very first Ego! Way back in 6th grade I used to write and draw my own stories and share them with friends, and he got a pretty good response from them and they wanted to hear more about him. I wrote conversations between me (the Host) and him during free time in class and my friends loved reading them, and it kind of took off from there. Aurora was created next, then Pandora, and even though they were fictional characters I’d made up they started to feel like a second family to me. And they still do! lol

Guilty Pleasures: She likes knitting and has so much yarn she doesn’t know what to do with it. She spoils her cat Cupcake with so many toys she doesn’t know what to do with them all. She has so many recipe books she doesn’t know what to do with them all. She’s actually a very neat person though, so another guilty pleasure would probably be cleaning. lol

Phobias: Heights, needles, and spiders (like her Host). I feel bad she shares my phobias. (Sorry, Aurora!) She’s also afraid of sharks, ever since she watched Jaws years ago and had nightmares for a week about them. She knows it's not good to be afraid of sharks and they get a bad rep, so she's trying to overcome that fear.

What They Would Be Famous For: Her cookies! She owns a bakery and while her cakes, brownies, and cupcakes are delicious, it’s her cookies that rake in the most dough. (Ha.) Every customer has their favorite, but hers is her creamy peanut butter cookies. They’re so soft and chewy, and she sprinkles peanut bits in so there’s a little crunch too!

What They Would Get Arrested For: The day Aurora gets arrested for anything is the day the world ends. She’s too pure, too innocent, to do anything resulting in arrest. She apologizes to insects when she has to capture them before setting them free! She gives away too many free samples at her bakery! She cries when she accidentally forgets to water a plant and it dies! If she ever gets arrested for anything, Pan and It may legit seek revenge to restore her honor…

OC You Ship Them With: Marcus. He’s sweet, she’s sweet! Their relationship might be normal and therefore a little boring to some people, but they love each other and are happy just to be together. They’re like an old married couple. lol

OC Most Likely To Murder Them: Not a single soul. Not even It. (Anymore.) She’s too kind for this world. An angel!

Favorite Movie/Book Genre: Generally anything except horror and war movies. She gets too nervous and scared watching horror, and gets too emotional watching battles with people fighting and dying. She tends to like comedies the most though, since they’re usually upbeat and make her laugh. She’s also a sucker for heartwarming stories. Those Chicken Soup for the Soul books? She’s probably got the whole collection, regardless of the intended audience.

Least Favorite Movie/Book Cliche: 'I had to do it. I had to kill them.’ She refuses to believe that killing is the only option no matter how dire a situation might be and will visibly get upset when she comes across this cliche. When she gets upset her face reddens and her lip wobbles, and if Marcus or Pan is with her she might rant to them about all the other options the protagonist had.

Talents and/or Powers: She is excellent at cooking, but baking is her specialty! If she’s mastered a recipe, she’ll master it again until it’s even better. And if she finds a new recipe, she will pull an all-nighter until she’s perfected it.

Why Someone Might Love Them: She’s such a sweetheart, bless her. She’s what the world needs more of: just honestly pure, good people. She’s the person who if she came across someone in need, she would give them everything she had. If you’re feeling down, she’ll do all she can to make you happy again. She’s definitely the mom friend.

Why Someone Might Hate Them: Some might consider her too good. Like It. He gets annoyed when she does things out of the kindness of her heart for no reason. He just doesn’t understand how someone can be that selfless. He thinks of her as a crybaby and she worries a lot, so that irritates him too. And others might be suspicious of her at first, wondering what she’s hiding or what she wants. But once people get to know her, they adore her and look to her for advice if they need help. Or just want free food. lol

How They Change: She’s probably the one who has changed the least. She’s always been the angel on my shoulder, the do-gooder. Someone has to keep the peace with the other two Egos around, after all.

Why You Love Them: Aurora is the one who resembles me the most, both in terms of looks and personality. There are some differences, though. She’s not shy, just quiet and reserved. She’s more comfortable with confrontations than I am, especially if it’s a matter of right vs wrong. I don’t have a problem with horror and war stuff. I wish I knew how to cook/bake. And I don’t think I could ever be as selfless as her. Basically, she’s a goody goody two-shoes, like It says. But it’s not a bad thing!

Phobias: Moths. When he was little a big one got caught in his hair and he accidentally smashed it trying to get it out. It was messy and gross.

What They Would Be Famous For: Hopefully for his paintings! He does all kinds of paintings, and has even had a few displayed in art shows. He likes doing landscape art the best, because he loves plants and nature.

What They Would Get Arrested For: Not that he’s looking to get arrested, but he’s secretly always wanted to experiment with graffiti…

OC You Ship Them With: Pandora. Just when he thinks he knows her, she surprises him and he loves it! She makes him see how exciting and fun life is, and she’s always encouraging him with his latest art project and boasting about his paintings to her friends.

OC Most Likely To Murder Them: Probably It. It and Reim don’t see eye to eye a lot… Reim’s pretty optimistic, and that clashes with It’s pessimism. They don’t exactly hate each other, but they get on each other’s nerves. “You threw off my groove!” “Fuck your groove!” Yatta yatta…

Favorite Movie/Book Genre: He loves animated movies. As an artist, he really appreciates them and considers them art, so he’s constantly rewinding scenes because he was focusing on the style or shading instead of what was going on. As for books, he likes fantasy. He likes escaping to another world, and fantasy can be anything and everything, just like a painting.

Least Favorite Movie/Book Cliche: Not really a typical cliche but… He really hates noir style stuff. Noir movies annoy him to no end because there’s no color and he wishes he could restore the color so bad. He needs color! And when people talk noir style, with the witty and flirtatious old-fashioned banter. It’s just so cheesy to him… This extends to books as well. He prefers deep conversations between characters rather than quick one-liners.

Talents and/or Powers: He’s an artist, so he’s well-rounded in a variety of mediums. Painting, drawing, sculptures, photography… He enjoys painting the most though!

Why Someone Might Love Them: He’s a down-to-earth guy that has his goals set and has a plan to achieve them. He knows what he wants in life and he also knows not to get his hopes up. He does hope his dreams come true, but if not he’s got plenty of back up plans. He’s just a nice guy in general, always ready to lift the mood with a joke or a grin.

Why Someone Might Hate Them: For people like It, optimistic people can be annoying. No matter the situation, Reim looks on the bright side of things and his pleasant attitude and charming smile can make It angry. Because life sucks, and It knows it, but apparently Reim doesn’t. Reim’s not optimistic all the time, however, and he does have days where he’s a little moody or depressed, but he tends to keep to himself those days (so of course It doesn’t know that).

How They Change: Reim started out as a painting I did my senior year, so I thought it fitting to give him the painter career in my Sims game. Until that point I didn’t know much about him but watching him interact with my other characters has helped me flesh out what kind of person he is. He looked more emo and brooding in the painting, but in Sims he’s a cheerful guy who enjoys life, so I like that change in him.

Why You Love Them: He’s the character I didn’t know was going to be created. But I’m glad I did that painting of him years ago! Before I made him in Sims, I wanted to do more with his character and knew I wanted him with Pandora, but that was about it. Originally Pan was with someone else from an Other World, and for reasons it didn’t work out, but I think she and Reim are a perfect match. They balance each other out.

Guilty Pleasures: Obsessed with Itachi from Naruto, so she has a collection of Itachi merchandise that shouldn’t even exist (her father knows people). She loves anime/manga and video games, and rock/heavy metal music. She also enjoys fan fiction (smut included, but she is picky about it).  

Phobias: This woman has no fear. You should be the one afraid.

What They Would Be Famous For: Not exactly famous, but her old classmates still remember the day the teacher was late and Apocothea calmly walked up to the front of the class and announced the teacher had been in a horrible accident and she was in charge now. She spoke with such authority that no one questioned her, and she proceeded to pass out copies of the 'worst fan fiction she had ever read’ for them to read and critique. It turned out that the teacher had been in a car accident (from speeding), and when the principal delivered the news everyone turned to her in fear. Of course she hadn’t really known… She just saw an opportunity and took it. She needed beta readers for her first fic, after all.

What They Would Get Arrested For: She’s too clever to get herself arrested. Anyone who leaves fingerprints and DNA samples is a Class-A moron. But if she did get arrested, somehow, it would probably be for making the police officer feel like an idiot. Or she would just ignore them and do the opposite of what they ordered her to do out of pure spite. Challenging authority and whatnot.

OC You Ship Them With: It. She wins all the arguments, basically, but they’re stupid arguments to begin with. They bicker back and forth, but it’s from love(?). I don’t know… Their relationship is kind of hard to explain. lol There’s not a lot of typical romance between them, but they do have their moments that say 'Yeah, they’re a couple alright!’

OC Most Likely To Murder Them: Nobody’s brave enough to even try murdering her. She’d murder them first.

Favorite Movie/Book Genre: Like It, she enjoys horror. Except where he’s the guy to think 'what would I do if I was trapped in a house with a serial killer?’, she’s the girl who thinks, 'If I was the serial killer, I’d go after them this way… That guy’s an asshole, anyway.’ She also likes murder mystery novels, but she’s always disappointed when she figures out who the killer is halfway through the book.

Least Favorite Movie/Book Cliche: 'The chosen one will save us!’ She doesn’t buy into the whole 'only this person can do it’ trope. Really? Only that person? But he’s an idiot. What if he dies? Then what? Guess the world ends.

Talents and/or Powers: I guess you could say her skill at Guitar Hero is a talent. She’s undefeated with all the Guitar Hero games (every mode, even expert). Other than that, she’s very talented at pretty much anything and everything, but especially at making people feel uncomfortable and fragile in her presence.

Why Someone Might Love Them: If you can get past her intimidating exterior, she’s a pretty cool gal. She’s kind of like Hana-chan from Fruits Basket… The things she says can come off as strange and threatening, but if you become her friend she would quite literally kill for you. She also has a younger sister named Analyse, and you can definitely tell they’re sisters from the way they look and talk.

Why Someone Might Hate Them: She’s very blunt, and if she doesn’t like you she won’t hold back on insults. Lots of people get offended when she does this, but that’s kind of the point. She can also be crafty in the way she talks to people, so sometimes they’re really not sure if she’s insulting them or complimenting them.  

How They Change: She’s changed just a little since I created her. Her relationship with It before was very one-sided, and she liked toying with him. She still likes to, actually, but it’s more affectionate now. She’s always been confident and in charge, but I think being with It has taught her that a relationship requires more teamwork and less blackmail.

Why You Love Them: Again, she’s one of those characters that displays traits I wish I had. She’s not afraid to be assertive, she loves herself for who she is, and doesn’t give a damn what other people think of her. And she gives off this vibe, like you really don’t want to trust that smile she’s wearing. Her calm but menacing demeanor really compliments It’s personality too, I think. He’s fire, she’s ice!

Guilty Pleasures: watching YouTube/EgoTube videos, memes, taking internet quizzes… And surprising Aurora on a regular basis with flowers and chocolate like the romantic sap he is!

Phobias: Puking and cuts on the skin. When he’s sick he gets very agitated and nervous and will refuse to eat solid food in case he can’t keep it down. (Soup and water only, basically.) With cuts, it’s not the blood he fears but the sensation of skin splitting. It stems from when he was a teenager and got a deep cut on his knee. Little nicks while shaving are no biggie, but papercuts make him lightheaded and make his skin crawl.

What They Would Be Famous For: He’s a very relaxed guy who honestly doesn’t stand out much, but his friends know him as the tech guy. Computer or game console acting up? Marcus knows how to fix it. TV or phone bugging out? Call Marcus, he’s your guy.

What They Would Get Arrested For: Like Aurora, he would never get arrested for anything. He’s too nice to do anything like property damage or fighting, and he’s never gotten a ticket for anything in his life.

OC You Ship Them With: Aurora. They’re so precious together, too good, too sweet! They dote on each other and probably unintentionally make other couples jealous. lol

OC Most Likely To Murder Them: It. Another goody goody two-shoes frustrates him even more than one. The only thing It appreciates about Marcus is that he’s not above using swear words (unlike Aurora). And maybe the fact that he’s willing to fix It’s laptop and game systems for free.

Favorite Movie/Book Genre: He really likes documentaries and informational books. He’s always interested in learning something new, and he’d much rather watch an hour-long documentary on EBS than watch the newest hit movie. He was the kid in school who always read the assigned Literature, Real World History & Ego World History, and Science books for fun.

Least Favorite Movie/Book Cliche: He doesn’t like when a side character you grew attached to suddenly dies. They make you care about them, only to kill them off! What the hell?

Talents and/or Powers: Talented with fixing all things tech. He does claim it’s his superpower! lol

Why Someone Might Love Them: When you find a genuinely nice guy who cares a lot about you, you struck gold! Aurora loves his soft, sensitive side when he’s alone with her and also loves his corny jokes. People in general like how laid back he is, as he’s very patient and knows everybody makes mistakes. He’s the guy who will walk an old lady across the street if she needs help, the guy who literally climbed a tree to get a cat out of it (sneaky little Cupcake!). Nice guys do exist, and he’s one of the best!

Why Someone Might Hate Them: Again… There’s people like It. They get annoyed with the whole 'nice guy act’, especially once they learn it’s not an act at all but just how he is. They might get jealous when they see how much other people like him, but more often than not they come around, especially after he helps them with something and expects nothing in return.

How They Change: His character hasn’t changed much, either. He’s thoughtful, kind, cheerful… He’s popular with everyone he hangs out with, because he gets along with pretty much everyone. He’s polite, open to new things and opinions, and though he admits he might be a little boring to be around he also doesn’t mind. Such a great guy!

Why You Love Them: He and Aurora are a pair of cinnamon rolls, too sweet, too pure for this world! Even though I created him long before I met Alex, he reminds me of him. lol Marcus is the perfect example for how you should treat your loved ones, and anyone you meet, really. He’s like the Mr. Rogers of the gang, I guess you could say. He just wants everybody to respect each other and be kind to themselves and others.

Sorry if this got super long, I just really love these characters. lol Also! When I was reading your OC post I found it really cool that some of our characters have birthdays either on the same day or really close, that made me smile! :D

“- effects are hardly anything groundbreaking, the CGI isn’t actually that well done but the film is fun enough”, Mute finishes yet another of his annoyingly informative rants. Whenever they watch anything together, he somehow manages to conjure up facts about it out of thin air – Rook has tested this ability on various occasions and even drunk, Mute is a fountain of fun facts about any series or film in existence. Normally Rook doesn’t mind listening to him spewing knowledge as he’s curious by nature, but today is… a little different.

“I have to pee”, Rook announces.

“Can you get some more popcorn on the way?”, Glaz replies before turning back to Mute. “I liked the premise but it wasn’t really that scary, I saw it as more of a comedy.”

Rook is glued to his spot on the armchair. The other three are lounging about, Twitch sipping her ginger ale while spread out on the beanbag chair and Mute and Glaz lazing on two different ends of the couch, all of them relaxed, visibly having enjoyed the film and looking forward to watching more. Rook still isn’t moving. It’s only eight, they started early because some of them are planning to go out for drinks later, Rook definitely not among them, and yet he’s frozen and his knees are weak and just thinking about the long way to the toilets makes him nervous.

“Oh, we can watch the original to the Ring or the Grudge next”, Twitch suggests with sparkling eyes, “I’ve seen both and they’re great.”

“Ask Ghost Boy over here whether that’s alright with him.” Mute points in Rook’s direction and the two other pairs of eyes follow the indication. He must be very pale because Twitch’s expression immediately grows concerned.

“Julien, is everything alright?”

“Splendid”, he lies through his teeth and forces a smile, “does, uh, does anyone else need to use the bathroom? Maybe?”

Mute is the first to start laughing. “Are you – are you fucking serious? You’re too scared to go alone?”

“Listen”, he begins but realises soon that there’s no coming back from this since Mute hit the nail on the head, the long hallways freak him out and the flickering lights and all the doors and he’s not going to go alone, he’d rather piss in a bottle than wander through the corridors when the base is this deserted already and fine, he’ll let his friends mock him if only it means he won’t have to venture out all on his lonesome.

“You’re adorable”, Glaz says with a grin. “We haven’t even started with the really scary ones.”

“Are you afraid of the ghosts haunting this place?” Mute raises a meaningful eyebrow. “Hm? Just imagine how many people must’ve gone through training here at Hereford only to end up dying in the field, being executed or just bludgeoned to death, dropped in a pit and forgotten. And what about the ones who died here? You’ve heard the stories from Mike.”

“This isn’t funny”, he murmurs but Mute quite obviously disagrees as he’s wearing a sickeningly gleeful expression now.

“Maybe they shuffle through the halls when we’re not here, looking for meaning in their undead life, rotting and festering corpses, the combat gear falling off of them in pieces – and they can still fight, you know, probably have more experience than we do, so if they see you and if they’re hungry, you’d better run – and they’re always hungry.”

“And maybe”, Glaz adds, “they’re clowns.”

Rook rolls his eyes and refuses to admit that the prospect of hearing dragging feet while stumbling about in the darkness is now not only going to strike fear into his heart but also make him run away screaming. “You guys suck. The only stupid clowns in this building are you.”

Even Twitch is joining in now, stabbing Rook in the back: “All I got from this was two zombies eating a clown, asking each other ‘does this taste funny to you?’.”

“Hey, I’m not making fun of your weird phobias either”, Rook pouts and earns a collective snort.

“You superglued a rubber spider to my hand while I wasn’t looking”, Twitch reminds him with a sour smile.

“You hung up a bunch of fake snakes in my room”, Glaz contributes.

“And you always make me order on the phone.”

“To be fair”, the Russian addresses Mute with a chuckle, “hearing you switch from your usual snarky self to a stuttering teenager as soon as someone answers is pretty entertaining.”

“I’ll go with you, Julien”, Twitch butts in before a fight can break out on the sofa. “I can get the popcorn and you don’t have to die of fright. Alright?” He just nods meekly and pulls her up on her feet before they step into the hallway. “At least you’ll have Elias keeping you company later, right? So you don’t even have to be alone.”

She’s right and it’s the only reason why Rook agreed to watching scary films on Halloween of all days – if it’s on his mind, he sees shadows flitting about everywhere, feels someone’s gaze in his back yet never catches anyone looking at him, has the odd sensation of being followed. It even goes so far as for his brain to make up noises, like the one he just heard at the end of the… wait a second. “What was that?!”

Twitch frowns and stops walking when she notices her companion is petrified, both unwilling and unable to take even one more step. The corridor is long, some of the doors ajar and the lights relatively low which is why Rook has no idea how she can look this calm. “I don’t know. Something. Come on.”

He’s shaking his head insistently, jumps when there’s a different noise now, coming from directly behind them. Slowly, he turns around, catches a glimpse of movement and then all of a sudden, someone – or rather something – steps out into the long corridor, moaning and moving decidedly inhumanly, and all that Rook sees is a mouth full of needle-like teeth, blood-spattered clothes and fucking clown make-up.

The very first thing he does is scream in panic and has no brain capacity left to realise just how high pitched it is; the second thing is starting to run. He turns tail and books it, ready to outrun this monster, escape this fucking building and run to the SAS living quarters because he’ll be safe there. Instead, he collides full force with Twitch, making her scream, and together they tumble to the floor in a heap of flailing limbs and panic. He tries not to let this deter him from getting away, begins crawling blindly and only then the laughter and the soft words register.

“Julien, Julien, please. It’s me. It’s okay. What are you doing?”

At first he can’t place the voice because there’s no logical scenario in which this person should be here, but when he peeks over his shoulder, the nightmarish, grinning mouth has disappeared and given way to a wide smile which can only be Blitz. Next to him, Twitch groans and slaps at him in dismay. “If you reacted this way on a mission, we’d probably all die. Get off me!”

Even a few seconds later, after the frightening apparition who really turns out to be none other than Blitz has helped them back up, Rook is still struggling to slow down his breathing and his pumping heart. Fortunately, Twitch doesn’t seem eager to gloat and instead takes pity on him, excuses herself for the sake of popcorn and leaves him alone with his lover. Who is grinning like a fox. “Shut up”, Rook snaps at him, “that was not okay.”

“I’m so sorry, I really didn’t mean to startle you”, Blitz replies softly, peels off one of his gloves and cards a soothing hand through the young man’s hair. “But I’ve been working hard on this outfit and wanted it to be a surprise for you – Dom told me you love the design of scary clowns, so I did my best. How do you like it?”

That fucking - “I hate it. I hate everything about it. I absolutely despise clowns, mon cœur, and had you asked literally anyone else, they would’ve told you. Don’t ever do this again, goddammit, my knees are still weak.”

“Oh. I didn’t know that.” Blitz actually looks sheepish and disappointed and yet Rook wants nothing more than to tear off every single part of his costume.

“Why do you have this anyway? Why did you think this was a good idea?”

“I love Halloween”, he replies timidly and okay, at this point Rook really can’t be upset at him anymore. With a sigh, he pushes his lover back into the room he came from – Blitz’ own room, so Rook really could’ve guessed who it was – and makes out with him for a while, both to cheer him up and to calm himself down. Regardless, the outfit doesn’t get any less terrifying, not even if he stares at it for a while.

“Alright, but I don’t”, he grumbles and snuggles up to his German who gladly uses the opportunity to lightly massage his back and pull him closer, clearly intent on making it up to him. “But it’s not your fault. I’m fine as long as you don’t leave me.”

“Well”, says Blitz and his tone of voice indicates nothing good, “I was planning on going out with the others dressed like this in about an hour. But you can join us and I’ll hold your hand the entire evening, if you like.”

Rook is about to give him the puppy dog eyes and whine about being scared when he’s alone (which wouldn’t even be a lie) but halts all thoughts upon hearing voices. Very familiar voices. He twists out of the hug, puts a finger to his lips and motions for Blitz to pull his balaclava back on. Blitz complies, grinning, obviously aware of Rook’s spontaneous plan, and they exchange a series of gestures, nudges and waggling eyebrows as they wait for the two people to come closer.

As soon as Blitz throws himself through the doorway with a truly frightful snarl, Rook peeks out after him so he doesn’t miss anything. He catches the momentary surprise on both Montagne’s and Bandit’s faces, the two previously deep in conversation, yet whereas Montagne’s expression remains slightly shocked, Bandit’s turns to genuine horror – he lets out a terrified shriek which somehow ends up even higher pitched than Rook’s but instead of running away, he jumps into Montagne’s arms without hesitation. The gentle giant catches him competently, holding him bridal style as Bandit keeps screaming and at this point, Rook barely manages to hold back his laughter.

So much for appreciating clown designs, he thinks. Maybe Halloween wasn’t so bad after all. And maybe he should go out for drinks after all because he bets everyone is dying to hear just how heroic Bandit acts in the face of danger.

TWO HEADCANONS FOR YOUR MUSE THAT YOU’VE NEVER TOLD ANYONE :

Lotion: Jughead really likes using lotion. He’s got problems with dry skin that gets itchy in the winter and easily burnt in the summer so he combats this with different lotions. Most are unscented or have a subtle manly scent, but when he’s stressed out he has a secret stash of honey lavender lotion.

Tattoo: Jughead has a small crown tattoo above the knuckle of his right thumb. It was an impulsive choice, always loving his beanie and the crown look it carried. He didn’t consider himself quite royalty but the meaning was very dear to him. Overtime when he became the Serpents he had it re-inked to remind himself of his duty.

THREE THINGS YOUR CHARACTER LIKES DOING IN THEIR FREE TIME :

Movies Jughead loves all sorts of movies, and if he’s not writing on his laptop or even scribbling down ideas on a napkin he’ll most likely be found watching a movie. He prefers to go to the Bijou but the internet holds a lot of promising movies for him to watch. He’s a bit of a purist, choosing to watch the movie before making any judgements but he’s normally a fair critic.

Writing Another hobby he has is writing, whether it be on the book he’s making about the town or just the random adventures he thinks up it’s something comforting for him to do. He’ll nurse a cup of coffee, normally taking too long and ending up with a cold cup, and write until his eyes are sore and burning from staring at the screen.

TWO THINGS YOUR CHARACTER REGRETS :

Not fighting to see Jellybean more Jughead honestly misses his sister and despises himself for not trying to fight to see her more often. They talk on the phone occasionally, (normally when their mother is busy at work or asleep) but it still leaves him with a deep sadness.   

Not saving the Twilight Drive In Jughead has came a long way from when he was staying in the drive-in but he misses the simplicity of taking someone to see a movie, talking quietly if it’s an especially bad one and just having a nice time. The spot where ti stood holds a lot of pain for him, and he tries to avoid the area as much as he possibly can, choosing to keep it as far from his mind as possible especially knowing why it was taken so unfairly away.

TWO PHOBIAS YOUR CHARACTER HAS :

Trypanophobia This is the fear of injections. Jughead isn’t scared of the needles found in tattoo guns for they don’t actually penetrate in deeper than the upper layers of skin. But shots / getting blood drawn is a whole other thing. He would rather wait until the last moment to get any medical care related to injections and needles, sometimes even avoiding a flu shot just so he doesn’t have to deal with it.

Coulrophobia Jughead absolutely cannot stand to be around clowns. It all stems from watching It at a very young age, the tv was left on after FP fell asleep and he woke up to see a terrifying clown. It left him with a lasting phobia of clowns and he prefers to keep as much distance between himself and the colorful performs as possible.

Let’s Talk Types;Ghost

Info on ghost and partial ghost types in the Sonaverse

Ghost types! Associated with trickery and mind melting paranoia,they are the masters of people’s phobias.

The type was named for its similarities to actual ghosts,although,you won’t see Ghost types actually walking through walls or going invisible,not unless they have the ability infiltrator at least.

They are most known for their ability to manipulate people’s senses,causing themselves to *appear* to do crazy ghost things. This also allows them to cause people to hallucinate their greatest fears,with enough practice of course.

Mainly active at dusk and dawn,Ghost types are well adapted to low light environments,although they don’t do well in total darkness,they can still see well in dimmer settings. This allows them to have a slight leg up over their dark type cousins,who get flashbanged by the sun just by going outside for two seconds.

Notorious in battle for their trickiness and cruel mind games,some people make the mistake of comparing them the dark types. Dark types target a general fear that exists within everyone,a real,rational,physical fear,well ghost types target specific,much more irrational fears,phobias,and trauma,like someone’s fear of drowning,clowns or needles.

Ghost types,much like dark types tend to be a bit paler then their non-ghost relatives,although they tend to look a bit more actually dead and less ‘I haven’t seen the sun in 6 months’. They vary greatly in colours,but purples are common.

They do not glow in the dark like dark types,aside from their eyes,which will glow,though,some parts of their body,such as hair and scales,may capture and reflect light in a way that create the illusion of a faint glow.

They seem to by tied to shadows,based on the names of a lot of their moves,but in actuality they cannot manipulate shadows at all,ghost energy just happens to look like stereotypical ‘shadow magic’. Add the fact that a lot of people are scared of things lurking in the darkness,and shadowy figures looming over them,the Ghost types association with shadows becomes much clearer.

They make use of psychological warfare in fights,aiming to distract and cripple opponents through hallucinations and irrational fears,and their ability to sense fear allows them to better pin point what they should be showing a person for maximum fear.

Most ghost type species are more predatorily inclined,requiring plenty of protein to thrive,although not all require this diet to survive.

Ghost types have a unique reputation for being driven and focused when it comes to combat,even when they’re ‘playing with their food’,and most ghost types will struggle to not crumble under the weight of their own fears,or when facing down a particularly angry dark type.

They are known for efficiency and stealth,their ability to warp peoples senses makes passing by enemies a breeze for any ghost type with enough training to keep their cool. A notorious ghost type was Deadhand,a British sniper during WW2,with her dual Ground/Ghost typing and infiltrator ability,she made quick work of her foes,able to move around the battlefield unseen.

Ghost types are strong against other Ghost types,due to their ability to target fears,as well as psychic types,who’s psychic powers makes getting specific fears just right even easier for ghost types,crippling the psychic types,who primarily rely on mental strength in most combat situations.

Ghost type energy can’t touch Normal types,but thankfully,Ghosts can’t be hit with normal,or fighting type energy,it will simply miss,or phase straight through them,unless an ability like scrappy is at play

Ghost types resist Poison and Bug. Bugs are a common phobia,and ghost types being supposed masters of phobias,would obviously come out on top. Poison it a trickier one to pin down,although it’s possible that ghost types developed a resistance to poison to appear more ‘dead’ to scare off potential threats,a trait that seems to have stuck around to modern day

Ghost types are weak to dark,and ghost. Dark types trump based on their control over darkness itself,and their mastery of true,raw,physical fear,and ghost,for reasons discussed before hand,two ghost types can target each other’s raw fears,revealing things most ghost types would rather not face.

Fear is a chain reaction in the brain that starts with a stressful stimulus and ends with the release of chemicals that cause a racing heart, fast breathing and energized muscles, among other things, also known as the fight-or-flight response. The stimulus could be a spider, a knife at your throat, an auditorium full of people waiting for you to speak or the sudden thud of your front door against the door frame.
