Sometimes it hits just how tonally different The Dragon Prince is from virtually every other kids show on TV and I lose my mind. I'd argue something like Infinity Train gets closest with its emphasis on psychological horror and morality, or even Transformers: Prime (if you know, you know) with its severe focus on war (aka one of the more lowkey episodes is a main character having a suicide bomb forcibly strapped to their chest). Steven Universe Future and Jurassic World: Camp Cretaeceous/Chaos Theory are also probably honourable mentions.
All of these shows have mature content in them, which isn't different from more popular shows like Owl House, She-Ra, or even ATLA, but often times in aforementioned three that content is presented in lighter ways and/or interrupted by bathos (this is true for She-Ra in particular). Most of TOH's heaviness is reserved for S2 Hunter or S3 Luz; ATLA has some episodes that particularly emotionally heavy (The Southern Raiders, Zuko Alone, the Southern Air Temple) or are quite hitting in exploring themes of colonization (Imprisoned, City of Walls and Secrets, Northern Air Temple), but a good deal, I'd say even the majority, are also pretty fun shenanigans, too. To be clear as well, a lighter tone is not a Problem never mind a negative (ATLA has a very strong thematic point to its own about the sanctity of children and childhood amid the horrors of how imperialism strips it away), but it is a tonal difference.
And it's not as though TDP doesn't have episodes where there are fun shenanigans (Callum and Rayla's initial exploration of Xadia in 3x02 is nothing but fluff, Soren and Corvus are a more gay comedic duo in 6x02) but the series more or less operates like "What if every episode was The Southern Raiders?" due to its consistent emphasis on grief and morality. They use words like kill and death and murder all the time.
From the pilot / opening episodes
and to when characters are having breakdowns because they murdered someone (and we're still supposed to like them) or have done horrible things, with the show's heaviness ramping up particularly from S4 onwards.
When loved ones die (and the show has a body count of 20+ named characters who have died, six seasons in, some even being children) the show depicts mourning in all its stages and ugly glory. The sadness, the anger, the revenge, the desperation, shifting blame and cognitive dissonances, thinking you had moved on only for that wound (which never fully healed) to be ripped wide open again.
Characters get tortured by being electrocuted or having their blood frozen in their veins or beaten up (5x08). There are successful assassination attempts (1x03, 3x02). People, even children younger than the main cast of characters, are put on trial with the death penalty (4x06, 6x09). Within the first three episodes, a character is running down stairs and tripping over dead bodies.
Sometimes three different characters in one episode will be having a breakdown or dealing with something absolutely devastating to their emotional state (2x08, 3x07, 6x01, 6x09, 7x01). The magic system is a trolley problem on steroids. Do you kill a monster to feed starving kingdoms, or to save yourself, or to save someone you love? What makes it a monster? What if the monster isn't a monster? What if you have to kill a child? What if it means killing your child? What if it means killing yourself?
There are two characters who canonically have cannibalized other people, one being a blood-drinker / vampire variant.
This doesn't mean the show isn't fun or funny. One character consistently thinks bathroom humour is funny (while being one of the most tragic characters in the entire show). The characters cheer each other up, take care of each other, are goofy, etc. The show is ultimately hopeful.
But the emotional weight afforded to the choices the characters are making, even good-intentioned ones with unforeseen disastrous consequences, the way show focuses on their emotional processing (or lack of) is very unique in the landscape of western animation, especially to this degree, I think. Never mind the increasing amounts of blood. Nor does this make the show inappropriate for children! Tiny me was morbid as fuck at 7 years old, I would've loved it, and I know many kids from ages 7-12 who do in my work as a tutor. But when people say "TDP isn't like most kids shows," I think what that means is sometimes lost in translation in conflating it with what people usually say aren't 'just kids shows,' when TDP... really, really isn't.
The show begins with assassins sent by a grieving mother to execute a father and his child in revenge for the father killing her partner and child, and it never lets you forget it.

Hey!!
Are you a fan of:
She ra
ATLA
The Owl House
Kipo
Wendell and Wild
Amphibia
Mitchells vs. the machines
Gravity Falls
Dead End
Puss in Boots and the last wish
Into the Spiderverse
Then I have a movie for you!!
Nimona is a movie coming out tomorrow, June 30th that’s been 7 years in the making! It’s based off the tumblr webcomic turned best-selling graphic novel of the same title.
It was originally being made by Blue Sky Studios and was going to have a theatrical release aimed around 2021, but after Disney acquired them and shut the studio down the film was scrapped. The movie was only about 10 months away from being finished, and it was shut down after Disney execs had pushed back against the queer themes/characters in the movie. BUT, Annapurna studios picked the film back up and finished it!!
Onto the film itself!
The movie follows Nimona, a spunky shapeshifter who teams up with the knight Ballister Boldheart (previously Ballister Blackheart in the graphic novel) after he was framed for a crime he didn’t commit and sent on the run. His ex-boyfriend, Ambrosius Goldenloin, is tasked with hunting them down, but is conflicted between fulfilling his duty and his feelings.
The animation style is stunning and dynamic, and the visuals are so so good!! I would highly recommend checking out the movie and supporting it when it comes out, this is a big step for stylized animation and also queer rep in animation as well!
But the best part is that it just looks like an amazing movie!!

in a hyperthetical modern au, what tv shows or music you think your characters would like?
Oooh okay, let’s see…
Mara would probably be a true crime/a really good fictional crime show girly I’m ngl. They’d probably watch and try to see if they could solve the mysteries before the presenter lays them all out, and get really upset when the police don’t do their job or the legal system fails the victim’s family. I think they’d see it as kind of a comfort of like “I’m not the only one who’s been through terrible things” and resonate really heavily with the victims. (Also ATLA, but they don’t tell anyone that)
Daisy would love Gravity Falls, The Owl House, bluey, She-ra, etc… like really well made kids tv shows.
E likes action movies
Aiden doesn’t watch tv. Unless it’s a documentary about how a fortune-500 millionaire made their wealth, or about like Alexander the Great’s rise to power or smth. And he will sit there and criticize the information the documentary presents because he’s a fucking nerd and probably already knows it all.
Mojave would absolutely watch like sit-coms and dramas. I personally don’t venture into this genre very much, but from what I’ve heard about them Mo would probably be into Friends, One Day at a Time, Full House, and other kinda like… light hearted family type sitcoms.
Z.N. Ines, despite what you may initially think, would NOT be into procedural tv shows (though I do think they’d find something like judge Judy hilarious). They’re probably more into comedies than anything else.
As for EOD… who needs tv when all the world’s a stage 🙃

Most Disturbing Animated Kids Show Competition!
have you ever seen something from a children’s show that was so disturbing it made you think “this was made for kids???” Well, we’re going to vote on which show is the most disturbing! disturbing in this context refers to moments, themes, and concepts which are scary/disquieting/nightmare fuel.
There will be four rounds of voting. The first round will have sixteen brackets, the second will have eight, the third will have four, and the fourth will have two. For the first and second round, each bracket will be up for twenty-four hours. I will decide how long each bracket in the third and fourth will be up as we approach the date.
The shows are as follows:
Adventure Time
All Hail King Julian!
Amphibia
AtLA
Camp Cretaceous
Carmen Sandiago
Clone Wars
Danny Phantom
Dead End Paranormal Park
The Dragon Prince
Ducktales (reboot)
Gravity Falls
Hilda
Infinity Train
Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts
Miraculous Ladybug
My Little Pony
OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes
OTGW
The Owl House
Rapunzel: Tangled Adventure
Rebels (sw)
RotTMNT
Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power
Star vs the Forces of Evil
Steven Universe
Summer Camp Island
Teen Titans (2003-2006)
TMNT (2012)
Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia
Voltron: Legendary Defender
My criteria for this list was ‘western animated shows that started after the year 2000 and are explicitly for audiences 14 years old or younger.’ I have not watched all of these shows, but I have watched over half. If one of your faves didn’t make the list, I’m truly sorry. Tell me which show and I’ll include it if I do something like this again. By ‘most disturbing,’ I mean the show with the most disturbing concepts, themes, and/or moments.
The brackets will be organised by the show which started the latest against the show that started the earliest. Then, the show that started the second latest against the show that started the second earliest, and so on. Here is a diagram:
And here is the matchups for the first round, in the order they will be fighting:
Teen Titans vs Dead End Paranormal Park
Danny Phantom vs Kipo and the Ages of Wonderbeasts
Avatar: the Last Airbender vs Camp Cretaceous
The Clone Wars vs The Owl House
Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated vs Amphibia
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic vs Infinity Train
Adventure Time vs Carmen Sandiago
Gravity Falls vs She-Ra and the Princesses of Power
TMNT (2012) vs The Dragon Prince
Steven Universe vs Hilda
All Hail King Julian! Vs RotTMNT
Rebels (sw) vs Summer Camp Island
Over the Garden Wall vs OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes
Star vs the Forces of Evil vs Rapunzel: Tangled Adventure
Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir vs Ducktales (reboot)
Voltron: Legendary Defender vs Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia
Propaganda is welcome. Please reblog this post for a larger sample size. The first poll will be up in twenty-four hours

So my sister finished She Ra with my 10 yo nephew and 7 yo niece. She asked me last night for other shows like it and I can't believe I'm struggling to come up with some! She's already seen ATLA and LOK. Owl House is going to be too weird for her and insanely she wasn't interested in Gravity Falls (absurd!). Young Justice seems a little old for a 7 yo. My nephew doesn't like the animation style of X-Men Evolution so has turned that down. They did do an episode of Sailor Moon which my niece LOVED but my nephew found Usagi really annoying 😂😂
What am I missing? I think they're going to like things with story arcs and less episodic so I didn't recommend Teen Titans tho the kids might like it. They're trying to watch something altogether tho. Thoughts?
#resource request#and just to be clear#anything they said no to is NOT a reflection on me#Owl House is great#and Gravity Falls is superb!#La de da#furi has a family

Out of curiosity, what other fandoms are you in, what genres of shows do you like and can I theoretically interest you in another pathetic one-sided wet cat energy ship?
been wondering if I should just redirect to my main or actually list as many fandoms I can off the top of my head. it's um. it's a lot.
ace attorney (all games including aai duology, the layton crossover and tgaa duology), my little pony, my hero academia, assassination classroom, the disastrous life of saiki k, toilet-bound hanako-kun, spy x family (anime only), buddy daddies, little witch academia, mob psycho 100, I'm in love with the villainess, omori, undertale/deltarune, homestuck, danganronpa, master detective archives: rain code, ghost trick, atla/tlok, phineas and ferb, steven universe, gravity falls, ducktales (2017), amphibia, the owl house, infinity train, young justice, some general dc comics/animated movies (I've read a chunk of flash and green lantern comics from the new earth continuity), she ra (2018), nimona, the ghost and molly mcgee, I've... watched a bit of miraculous ladybug but not every episode (a bit of a mess of a show but has its enjoyable parts LMAO), welcome to night vale, the amazing digital circus ig?? there's only 2 episodes out what does that count for, and probably more I missed out idk
idk if I have a specific genre I like, I'm not typically into live action, but I am curious what you're referring to
I don't really post as much on my main but you can check it out if you want @pinklovely05 but I think I covered just about everything I listed there

making a post 😼
i really enjoyed atla :3 i saw a couple scattered episodes when it was coming out as a child but never actually followed the plot or got to know it outside of the general premise so it was really interesting finally seeing what the fuss was all about. it reminded me a lot of hxh (gon and aang kind of have similar things going on) and i like how it knows when to be funny and when to be serious. im usually like....not into kids shows in the way i see people get into say. she-ra or the owl house or the like. but i know atla is important for my generation...and it really exceeded my expectations in a lot of ways :) everything was set up very nicely and i like how it all converged
im steadily learning that prince zuko is everyones favorite so im not sure id have anything new to say about him but yeah i was enraptured by zuko. i love a character that writhes in pain on the floor gripping their head going grrrhhh im so stupid! im worthless! i have to prove myself at my own expense or i dont deserve anything! really just characters that beat themselves up and also have anger at the world i resonate with a lot. also his scar. me too boy
i think if i watched this show as a kid he'd be a pillar of my personality. i also like sokka just for the sake of stupidity. sokka and aang being stupid together was pretty lovely. + bumis an mvp for me. i still need to do some digesting but i think i could really dissect azula. she reminded me too much of my own mean sister for me to like her but at the end when she completely broke apart i was like daaaaamn azula. i love seeing girls have mental breakdowns. i think zuko couldve had a little more screaming and crying like she did
but thats my thoughts :) had no business whatsoever being a nickelodeon show but as a making fiends fan i stand behind nickelodeons ability to have hidden gem unconventional shows

How do you feel about the depth of the world building, and the target demographic and "realism" of the fantasy? The world and show is whimsical. It's targeted to a diverse audience, yet deal with some deep emotions. It's not aligned with human nature. Kings, queens, and generals don't charge in the front lines. Melodasies and fart flowers don't make a lot of sense, but they're entertaining concepts. I feel it's a sketch of the world that lets you focus on the core story and relationships.
I think there's a few things to keep in mind with TDP, specifically
The type of worldbuilding that typically gets included in fantasy
The type of worldbuilding that gets included in similar shows of its ilk (Steven Universe, She-Ra, The Owl House, and other contemporary kids' shows)
For fantasy, I'd say that TDP's worldbuilding is probably more 'shallow' due to the fact its a TV show, and the two season novelizations notwithstanding (which are already packed full of plot and written for a younger audience), it is much, much easier to do detailed worldbuilding in narrative fiction than visual media. Visual media can get away with communicating visual worldbuilding and splendid visuals, but in order for us to learn history or culture or anything along those lines, it almost exclusively has to come with dialogue, which is time consuming and you have to make sure the scene is still engaging; you don't even have the room to info dump a paragraph or two the way you could get away with in a book
So TV show worldbuilding, I'd say TDP is doing its best, considering its runtime and that worldbuilding is absolutely a priority. The expanded look at Xadia and Sunfire elf culture was one of my favourite things about S4
But in comparison to other kids' shows out there that are airing, or have recently aired? TDP is on a whole other level I don't think will be matched anytime soon. ATLA probably has a leg up on cultural worldbuilding (which also makes sense given the run time and nature of bending) but even then, there are plenty of things we know in TDP that we don't know in ATLA, such as history that goes hundreds and thousands of years back, local laws and judicial systems outside of one Earth Kingdom town, what more than one type of culture conducts as a funeral rite, etc.
Of the three other examples given, I think SU has the best worldbuilding, but we still don't really know what the Gem colonization of other planets was like. TOH develops some worldbuilding ideas, but never really wholly takes them to fruition, and even when I was more favourable to She-Ra while it was airing, worldbuilding was never a strong suit or seemed to be a focus of the series. Which is fine, as not every fantasy show wants to prioritize worldbuilding, but damn if I don't love it when they do, since it's one of my favourite parts of the genre as a fantasy reader and writer
And there are definitely kings, queens, and generals who have fought on the front lines in the past; it was expected for them to be involved in warfare. Melodaisies and fart flowers aren't grounded in a worldbuilding need, but neither are our silly real world equivalents of something like say, kazoos and whoopee cushions, that exist for no real reason other than that they're Fun and can be made by human hands. (And there are flowers, and even stink bugs, that do emit smells in nature.)
TDP definitely prioritizes a Top-Down approach in terms of writing from theme first and foremost and then weaving things in as they need, which they've acknowledged. The show, understandably as a story and something operating under story constraints, is more than willing to place plot and theme over logistics, but most stories are, tbh. So I think the sketch is detailed, but the focus is on how the characters interact with each other (and the theme accordingly) and the world is largely built around it - there's a reason it's not a world with a whole bunch of other continents, after all, simply because it didn't need to be. If you're interested in more thoughts in this vein / how TDP constructs itself, I'd recommend checking out this meta I wrote here <3

I LOVE CREATING!! - I will definitely be posting a lot of my writing projects, art, and ocs! some projects I will be posting about :3 (nobody is even gonna know what half of ts means LMFAOO) (all of these stories are really corny) enjoy my confusing synopsisesisies Bite the Hand That Feeds You: Follows a ragtag crew of bounty hunters as they navigate Somniare's unforgiving lands. The crew's leader, Damian, begins to question his identity and experience strange symptoms after a high-stakes mission brings them to a Dead Zone. Things begin to shift as the presence of animalum increases, the Rot spreads, and war overtakes hybrid West Somniare. LOST: A liminal space hotel horror about a girl who runs away after being framed for a murder she did not commit. After walking along the side of a deserted highway for hours on end, she comes across a bright hotel. With nowhere to go, she enters and quickly realizes something is off as the smiley-masked staff attend to her. Inner Circle: “Angel” is the son of two high ranking members of a Scientology-esque cult. He attends an over-glorified rich kid private school sponsored by this “Church” and he’s fairly popular. An all around pleasure-to-have-in-class, student-council-president, academic weapon. He is closest with his friends, Heloise and Samson. But they bring disgrace, and now there is blood on Angel’s hands. Found dead in his dorm bathroom, he ends up in Purgatory where he meets a demon boy who is not what he seems. and a lot, lot, lot, lot, lot, LOT more stories, ideas, and ocs I have lmfaoo! you can really tell i read too many ya novels and watched too much tv and had too much time to think as a kid
ANYWAYS!! Please feel free to interact as we probably have something in common!! I will likely just be posting stuff about my own projects and stuff about my interests!!

Ok I think it’s time I had a more detailed pinned post lol
hey I’m vriska (not my irl name ofc, but I go by it on here)! I like music a lot (especially mcr, ptv, paramore, thursday & also pink floyd, primus, queens of the stone age, etc). I also sing and play guitar & bass, & will occasionally post song covers.
I also really like Homestuck, the danger days/tlotfk universe, riordanverse, she ra, atla/tlok, the dragon prince, the owl house, & bnha (though I haven’t watched the last 3 in a while [or even finished them])!
DNI: Please DO NOT INTERACT if you’re pro-israel, homophobic, transphobic, terf/radfem, racist, sexist, anti-abortion, anti-vax or bigoted in general.
ao3: Karkitty
spacehey: xFunGhoulx (I made it on an impulse and hardly ever actually use it check it lol)
