the tiktok ban is obviously horrific and an infringement on american rights but it is so fucking funny seeing these politicians freaking out about potential chinese propaganda when tumblr had an actual russian spy ring that all the users knew about and nobody gave a shit

uuhhh in other new that lmk s5 trailer dropped and people are very
mixed
for context the new season is being partly animated by wildbrain i think. flying bark is still working on the show but probably due to all the other projects they've been working on like the atla movie the animation is off.
its understandable that people are upset. lmk has some of the most consistently dynamic and lively animation ive ever seen, and going from that to ok animation kinda sucks. as a culmination of a lot of what the series has been building up to people were inevitably going to be disappointed
at the same time people shouldnt harass animators. like ever. no amount of trying to petition or anything will change the s5, people are just trying to do their job and theres no probably no major changing to the finished product by now. and theres still a lot of that lmk charm in there, and we haven't even seen the whole season yet to judge it. flying bark is still working on it, and even if the animation never reaches the peak of the old seasons it still has the same writers so at least the writing has the chance to live up old standards. idk though we'll just have to wait and see
#i do think they could have just delayed it after dealing with other projects but with the anniversary lego might have jsut forced them????#and with how the animation industry is i guess they didnt have a choice#tbh im still really sad about the downgrade but after rewatching the trailer a bit more its not that bad despite the tweening#we've been spoiled with the other seasons but i think people will get used to it at some point. maybe#though i cant forgive some of the new stuff like li jing and that dragon tiger duo they do not fit the artstyle at all#though for li jing i think the problem is mostly proportions and how small his eyes look#but the dragon and tigers snouts just look bad.#ok looking at it again i think it looks weird because theyre dissolving. the design's still off but it wasn't as bad as i first thought.#but the proportions and shapes feels like it just isn't from lmk#idk i could nitpick but negativity is tiring and these guys have big shoes to fill for a show they werent prepared for it was inevitable#for any last takeaways please do not be mean to the animators#also studio changes are normal so its not some horrible injustice or the sign of the end times im more upset lego didn't handle it better#i still hope s5 is good and i want to believe it'll still be satisfying by the end the plot so far sounds pretty interesting#or atleast that the atla movie is good enough to compensate#and if im feeling greedy there will be a 6th season that gets better#and there are still good shots throughout all of this so maybe it'll work out with the season as a whole#with how popular it is in china i dont think its out of the question#idk though a lot of information is still up in the air so i guess we just wait#lego monkie kid#lmk#monkie kid#alttalks

also also I know everyone likes to talk about how good of an archon Venti is because he left mondstadt to do its own thing and hey look Zhongli's doing the same now with his retirement but I also like how the story shows it isn't without flaws, with so much freedom in the city it's all too easy to take control with power, Mondstadt's people may be free but they also don't have a god to actually uphold the ideal they stand for and how personal freedoms conflict, discrimination(eg. against Eula and her clan) is allowed because the people are free to do whatever they want, the fatui really wormed their way into mondstadt during the webtoon + nearly did with Davalin bc the people of mondstadt do whatever they want so Jean is overworked and the knights are ineffective(according to Diluc), and how mondstadt might have been the least free place for the common people during the Lawrences rule despite being the region governed by the archon of freedom
Zhongli at least first tested his people were ready before retiring, Venti kinda acended, organized a bunch of celebrations for his people, then left them to have fun with their newfound freedom only interveining when things get really bad
#to be fair zhongli's only left his people for a couple of years so who knows maybe if he left them for long enough#despite honing his nation on honesty and contracts things would delve into chaos too#or a capitalistic mess and we all know what it's like to live in one of those#now if liyue didn't have plot-armour-due-to-chinese-region-in-a-chinese-game............#my thoughts on liyue are 'god i wish its story was actually about the common folk common folk#but what i know of the chinese government is the communist party represents the common folk#so in reality it's more like common-folk-party-does-so-good-for-the-common-folk see????'#i really like liyue and its environment too!#wish they explored its flaws too and didn't present it as perfect due to china-chinese-media-relationship!#all of liyue's plots are like 'it's the time of the common folk i want to tell stories about the common people'#'(but also hold on to tradition and respect the traditions which are represented by the adepti)'#can we pls have some actual flaws like the rigidity of contracts and lack of change and rule of tradition#instead of 'contracts are good and honest and also change as the times change for the good of the people'#like yes zhongli at least tested his people before implementing that big change of stepping down#but also if the game didn't have to put china in a positive light tbh idk if he would have done that#as it might be more interesting to explore his archonhood ideal in both its good and its bad#and may have focused more on liyue's difficulting in changing and adapting to the modern tiemes#if venti is the god of freedom and is too free at times then zhongli the god of contracts is too stagnant at times#i have. complicated feelings about liyue due to my complicated feelings about being raised chinese#so mondstadt my fav for representing and giving people freedom#genshin talk

tbh i can't really ever see yao as warm towards human strangers. I don't know what the current state of hetalia fandom headcanon pool is, but while i guess you could make an argument that some nations might be more invested in interacting with their populace and having proper conversations/deep connections to some ordinary civilians (even if they're undercover/have concealed identity etc) idt yao is that type of person (at least in modern day)
he goes to buy breakfast from the little stall downstairs 2 blocks away and might hang out for a smoke at the public playground/exercise installations with some old grandpas but generally he's just living among them, nothing special about it. like he'll laugh at memes/douyins and go through the motions of human life, if he's in a mall and something stupidly unfortunate happens to the person 5 before him in line, he laughs and also takes a video if it's actually ludicrous, but overall his attachment to normal citizens is the average human's attachment to a random stranger. 0/10 would not hold the door for a person just because they supposedly make up his existence—much more focused on arriving on time or acceptably late to his meeting to spare the 5 sec it would probably take.
generally tho i feel like it's mostly a result of complicated feelings on nationhood, maybe somewhat from apathy, but also like efficiency and prioritization of his r/ships with other nations over humans that most likely will not remember him or that he will need to care about in the future. this is also partly bc of his personality too I think he's warm to ppl on whims or if that hospitality is extended to him first (cannot imagine him being mean to any old grandmother selling snacks), but otherwise he's just passing through. their existence is separate from his and it's not that deep, compared to his neighbors and others who've spent centuries to millennia interacting with, being shaped by, and shaping him
ig all this is to say that i can't really see him making any kind of ""special"" bond with some human he just met on the street as sometimes happens in fic

Again not a dungeon meshi reader/watcher but every time I hear about that laois guy I get reminded of how my system had/has a hyperfixation on dragons so intense that we got that big fancy dragonology book and we treated it like the damn dragon Bible for like years
Now, obviously, we understand that there's different interpretations on mythical creatures, and no one interpretation on a dragon is necessarily gospel, but that multiple interpretations on the classic tale of beasts of scale and fire are completely valid and to be expected!
however if you call an Eastern dragon a coatl I'm going to come to your house and slaughter your family
#THEY'RE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT#yes they have similarities but coatls have WINGS typically and dont usually have other limbs. they're more serpentine birds#meanwhile Eastern dragons (Chinese depictions for example) don't typically have wings and are more lizard-like#like Mushu !!!!!!!! Mushu is an Eastern dragon#and then there's drakes and wyrms. which are entirely different bc they can't really fly#drakes are more like draconic horses or dogs. no wings but four limbs and a tail with a reptilian appearance#wyrms are more serpentine with no limbs and no wings. though i think some interpretations of wyrms give them like.. two forelimbs#then there's wyverns. wyverns have two legs and two wings instead of the typical eight limbs (four limbs two wings)#(i also perosnally hold true to the interpretation of wyverns with poisonous stingers for tails but that's just me cause i think its cool)#..... how much of this is just me talking abiut dragons#explodes.#oh yeah and obv there's the HTTYD interpretations which i adore! they're interesting#the designs are so fascinating and from what ive seen seem to have some science behind them#and arent just the typical western style of dragons. which nothing wrong with the western style it's a classic ofc#but it's still fun to see some variation!!#and ofc there's WOF#which holds true to Western dragons in simple anatomy but has its own variations and of course its own lore#then there's. fuck i forget the name but it's a fantasy story based in China i believe#i loved it so much it was so cool#anyways it had a dragon character named Seryu. I love Seryu. he my favorite#anyways i liked the interpretation of dragons there bc iirc it held true to ummmmm some Chinese mythology involving dragons#cause Eastern mythology of drahons is . so much diffetent than Western#Western dragons are commonly very monstrous creatures‚ usually very animalistic#they tend to embody the Christian concept of greed/gluttony hence why they're so typically monstrous/villainous#which i find interesting but i wont get into that#meanwhile. i wanna say Eastern dragon legends more revolve around the idea of a dragon as more of a godly/fae-type creature?#that's probably a poor comparison but that's how i interpreted it. agian im probahly wronf about all of this#im some weirdo rambling about dragons on the internet. dont trust me explicitly#i need to get more dragon mythology books#HELP I REACHED THE TAG LIMIT I DIDNT THINK THAT WAS POSSIBLE GOOD LORD OKAY I'LL SHUT UP NOW

I love these books so much but holy shit does carthak’s worldbuilding drive me crazy
#like okay. I can ignore the funky parts of worldbuilding for most of it because most of it is in Tortall and the bits you see#are like really COOL and add a lot of depth other vaguely real life vaguely Europe fantasy worlds don’t do#big fan of everything happening past tortall#but carthak and the copper isles drive me batshit#Carthak is worse for me because I studied the Middle East/swana/west Asia whatever you wanna call those areas#plus a decent amount of Central Asia#and very specifically the linguistic and social development#and it’s bad enough that all of Africa is kinda mixed in with it#but none of it makes logical sense to my brain because it’s all thrown together#I’m trying to write a fic set in Carthak and keep getting distracted and making it even longer because I’m trying to make the worldbuilding#make logical sense#like I’m basing it vaguely on the Islamic empire at its largest extent which is what I think it’s supposed to be#with the bazhir as an alandalus equivalent that got separated from the empire then conquered#like fine. that works.#but having the Nile equivalent in the west is really fucking with me#also the implication that china is in the west hwat do you mean china is in the west but central asia is in the east#I just wanted to write a toxic ot3 getting together/breaking up fic about how Ozorne is both Varice and Arram’s freedom and prison okay#now it has an entire year of plot#either the distances in this world are really really fucking small or really fucking massive#and/or they have fascinating levels of ship based cultural exchange that tortall has managed to avoid entirely#also fuck basing ozorne on ozzy Osborne I’m making him look like my old classmate#I’ve started making worldbuilding decisions based on which accent I want people to have

#so listen. i am DELIGHTED that chinese media is filtering into us culture. the fact that this is happening bc of looming tiktok ban#is peak irony. PEAK irony i say#that said. the name being xiao hong shu = little red book is uhhhhhhhhh Something#and ik the official stance is unrelated but mao zedong's little red book is so notorious that i find it. uh.#well. that's a hell of a coincidence ok#and i recognize that maybe i have not deprogrammed all the anticommunist propaganda but i also cannot understate that the communist movement#of china had very VERY detrimental effects on A LOT OF PEOPLE.#(they died. i'm saying a lot of people died not just of war but of like. starvation. It Was Bad Ok)#also they tried to delete history. china has MILLENIA of history and for a while there the ccp just. encouraged it toward oblivion#mom didn't get sun wukong as a kid and relatedly *i* did not get sun wukong as a kid and i'm salty as hell about it#*obviously not to say nationalist party wasn't without problems? idk i'm sure it had its issues as all parties do#i'm not a historian ok i am a lay person who has seen communism be glorified in its current states and. um. its current states are not good#i really super wish the current biggest examples of communism that we have aren't what they are. (shitty. they're shitty)#ALL THIS TO SAY. HAVE FUN ON REDNOTE the cultural exchange happening rn is so fun and exciting!!!!!#just. be careful;;;;;;#(against what i have no idea tbh?? i'm not sure they can anticapitalist any more than any other place on the internet. but nevertheless.)#fez talks#current events

No wait I'm rewriting this to get my feelings out.
First of all, CN confirming that Caleb and MC were adopted, beyond being incredibly questionable and completely defeating half the fandoms arguments of 'gege is just a cultural thing' because. it's no longer just cultural, it is a legally binding contact that ties people into a family. If they weren't legally adopted that would make sense, but mixed with the LEGAL PROCESS and the term 'brother' makes it very family-lense. Is so fucking foolish, my brain hurts.
Because you can't just dissolve an adoption, its actually harder for an adoptee to cut ties with their adoptive family than it is for bios to do so. There are far more things in place for biological families to severe ties. It's also easier legally to do so. It certainly doesn't magically disappear just because someone died? That's actually ridiculous??
But also, its incredibly traumatic as a process to try to dissolve an adoption, and normally sits on the adopters shoulders to do, and pretty much always has to come before the process is finalised. You can't just go through every legal process, and then go 'actually changed my mind' and file some paperwork? There's an entire legal system in place... And even if it was easy to do. MC has LOST their family to death, and now is being told they don't HAVE family, because legally they're being shoved aside by a system that irl (while has its place), is incredibly corrupt???
In what world would a person face waking up one day, to a TEXT mind you, saying 'yo ur no longer bound as family to the only people who took care of you, godspeed, have a great day, oh ye pick up some paperwork I guess so we can really finalise how alone you are.'
You can complain about the translation all you want, but the way CN has framed adoption in general is disgusting, and the way it's being treated as a plot point actually makes my blood boil a little bit, and I think EN did the right thing in fully fucking ignoring it.
CN needs to get consultants, because adoption is already treated as either some peoples saviour complex, or some kind of subpar way to shove some kids into your family (because you have to i guess???). This entire thing is fucking ridiculous.
Also you can take this as Caleb critical if you like (it's not, it's PG-Critical if anything because I play the game and I'm not MC, and I don't think I am MC when I play), but he's also not a real fucking person, and he doesn't have to hear some of the shit people say about adoptees and live with it digging into his chest like a criticism of everything he can't control.
So maybe, just maybe, we need to stop making jokes about adoption dissolution, and give the 'they're not blood siblings so its ok' shit a rest. AND MAYBE, we need to just accept y'all can like Caleb, and still criticise things, because critical thought is actually a really good thing to practice.

Anyone happen to know of any good books in the same vein as The Age of the Vikings by Anders Winroth, but about ancient/traditional Chinese history and culture? I realize that's an INCREDIBLY broad topic, the history of that area stretches way longer than that of the vikings ever did. But I'm in that "I don't know what I don't know" stage of learning about the area and its history.
I'm not looking for anything that focuses on modern/recent China, I'm looking for something that covers the mythologies, philosophies, and nitty-gritty culture details of the area's ancient history in as much depth as possible. It doesn't have to cover the ENTIRE history (I doubt a book like that even exists), even just something about one or two dynasties works. In fact that's probably better, because you can get more in-depth if you focus on one era.
And when I say "nitty-gritty culture details", I mean it. Nothing is off the table. I want to know how clothing was made and cleaned, what city sanitation looked like, how illnesses were treated, and all that stuff.
If the book(s) also happen(s) to touch on the mythology/philosophy/culture of nearby areas as well, that's just a bonus.
...also it/they would have to be in English </3
EDIT: I'll also take documentaries and, like, youtube recommendations if there are any historians online who've made videos like what I'm describing.

just found out the lead singer of taiwans biggest death metal band is also an active parliament member since like 2015.... and is still active as a death metal singer. he's a pretty standard taiwanese center left anti communist from what i could gather. which like as a leftist i dont really agree with but i also dont know enough abt taiwanese politics to like make a full judgement. though he seems to be a standard liberal nothing remarkable, radical, or new, not overtly horrible but just bland. but that was something i definitely did Not expect. apparently he's very pro indigenous rights and self determination for indigenous people but being in a centre left mega party like the DPP does not seem like the best way to achieve that. But yea, just thought I'd share
Tumblr media
#chthinic collabed heavily with collage last year and ik natsuki (lead singer of collage) is very pro indigenous rights and posts abt it a#lot of instagram and i really appreciate the amount of political stuff on her platform. its all very progressive tho v much limited to tw#so idk. i kind of got the cibe of some groups that see taiwanese indigenous issues as seperate to the larger issue of colonialism and#indigenous rights all over the world to conflicts such as palestine. where some other groups have a lot more of the collective consciousnes#and idk. my view is limited and i didnt see that much but when i go back i def wanna look for more political groups in tw and learn about#the political landscape there for leftism. theres a lot of potential in tw imo#chthonic* natsuko**#edit: overall i think that like.. i get the spirit but i feel like for many taiwanese the identity of tw has been everyone united agaisnt#china which i can understand from the perspective of the indigenous ppl that had their land colonized by the japanese then had to share with#the fleeing kmt settlers. but like i dont think that its the best approach to say only china bad rather than big governments threatening to#take your land by force is bad. because idk my take on china and tw is that regardless of the historical claim or wtv. taiwans indigenous#people have been there long before the han ever stepped foot. and china isnt all good as seen in its treatment of the uyghers and tibetans#but is overall not nearly as bad as the west paints it to be. china is neither fully a communist paradise. and has many capitalist undertone#s influence the government ever since deng xiaoping came to power. personally i never fully agreed with mao. i think mao was a necessary#figure in the beginning and let power go to his head and i believe zhou enlai always shouldve been the founder of the PRC#fuck the kmt.. never liked the kmt and it seems as they are also slowly losing favor in tw also. and like... hmm#i need to do more reading tho. none of this is like 100% set in stone how i feel bc theres a lot i dont know
