I am so sorry op but I think it's more on the inverse side. Percy's powers are so in tune with him that even with limited time, he was able to access a large arsenal of them. Sure he hasn't specifically trained to fine tune his powers but unlike the other big three children who have all experimented their powers before, he always ends up in mortal peril everytime he has to come up with something new. So unlike others who have kind of tried and tested and put a few limits on their powers, Percy just goes with it. He doesn't think about whether he can or not, it's always a case of "I must".
Iapetus is going to kill Thalia and Nico, so I have to find a way to stop him. But I am half poisoned and bruised, I can't fight him. Oh okay so I will just use the rivers in Underworld for help. They are water right?
Akhyls is going to kill me and Annabeth here, we aren't strong enough to fight a primordial. She is going to choke us with poison. Annabeth's going to die. I am going to die. Annabeth's going to die. Wait poison has large amount of water or even liquids. I can control it!
And each time he proves himself right he goes Oh cool, that's helpful. With no idea how world transcending his own abilities are. Were it anyone else they would have let their training and mindset of myths limit their imagination and their ability to fight. But Percy hasn't been trained traditionally, he has never put a limit on his own power. He does with it whatever he needs to and he doesn't let a pre defined set of rules or ways inhibit him. "What do you mean I can't overpower a Primordial in her own domain with her own poison? Of course I can. Poison contains water, it's liquid. I can totally do that."
I think Percy using less powers in the first series has more to do with his trust issues with it. See Percy has deeply internalized his self loathing and self esteem issues. He sees himself as a burden, a troubled kid who only causes problems. He doesn't want his powers to do that, to destroy everything in their path. So he keeps them coiled tight and shut. He needs it to do precisely what he wants, which it does almost always. He starts trusting them but but then at times when he he lets a leash loose, his powers do crazy shit like, blow up a volcano, lift an entire river bed from its roots, level a creek, start a hurricane or other disasters, so he keeps them tightly leashed.
We can see evidence of that with words like "a pull in my gut" "I felt something inside me break" "something uncoiled" and so on.
Whether he does it consciously or not, it only serves to benefit him because everytime his opponents foolishly think,
Enemy: I know all that you can do Perseus Jackson.
Percy: ........
Percy: Damn, even I don't know everything I can do. It's cool that you think you know all I can do though.
*obliterates the monster with something new he comes up with*
Percy: Ha didn't know I could that but boy am I glad it worked. See this is what I was talking about.
Either way I do agree with op on a few things like children of Hades have the most potent abilities, most broken ones but I think their lack of stamina does hinder them. And I mean Nico has known about his powers for even less time than Percy while neither Thalia nor Jason are very creative.
I think Hazel comes really close due to her versatility and creativity. Magic, mist and her own powers along with her fighting prowess. Her and Meg McCaffrey should have been compared to Percy more so than others given they were in similar situations and have such strong abilities. Technically Meg is a child of the Elder Gods.
I think Rick should have explored a bit more on the big three children and their powers.
The point I was trying to make is Percy is so powerful because of his lack of traditional training or traditional fighting knowledge. He learns by hands on experience, adapts on instinct and improves by finding loopholes or getting a better grasp of his already present abilities.
can we/rick talk more abt how extremely inexperienced percy is with his powers in comparison to many of the other big 3 kids
like it’s actually very interesting to think abt if you think abt the connection they each have as a scale to how connected they are to their godly parent (not like emotionally lmao but their godly heritage if that makes sense)
like if you think of nico and hazel those two are arguably the most like in tune with their powers both having used their powers since they were very young and being forced to kind of connect with their godly side much sooner/faster then the others
thalia and jason being second since thalia is literally the second in command to a literal goddess and as a soldier camp jupiter would definitely push jason to know his limits but they both haven’t reached that ease that nico and hazel have — thalia probably could’ve reached it if she hadn’t been snubbed at 15 and wasn’t scared of heights lmao and if jason had probably any type of support that wasn’t pushing him to just be better or focused more on his powers then physical strengths
both thalia and jason also started very young with using their powers yet both had that small blocker of other mortals/people around in comparison to hazel and nico
like hazel and nico are both so small that they’ve been taught to mostly use their powers not that they can’t fight but they rely a lot more on that rather then a sword unlike jason thalia or percy but i think that also just goes with the age that they are since their so young and were taught at that young age to lean on their powers that’s simply what’s easier
then you have percy who literally just found out half this shit was real like 5 years ago and knows nothing abt his powers like genuinely the amount percy leans more on his physical strength bc that’s all he’s had up until he was 12 in comparison to how much he leans on his actual powers is crazy especially if you look at the difference between how much jason or nico rely on their powers at their ages in comparison to how much percy did at those ages
it’s also interesting how that plays into people not taking him very seriously people see him as much more mortal and “weak” bc of it
not that any of them are doing it wrong obv it’s just very interesting to think abt
i think this also plays into percy’s morals a lot ? i recently saw a post saying nico wasn’t scared of percy when he was taking down an army and had hades with a sword to his neck yet annabeth was when percy was choking that goddess in tartarus even tho it was self defense which is all true but if you boil it down to those key points you can really see the clear distinction between the morality of nico and annabeth in those moments and how they know percy in that way as well
nico who’s on the cusp of godly hood in a way - being hades ambassador and spending most time in the underworld - he looks at percy as this hero who fights and kills and wins so that’s what he was letting percy do and he was watching it in awe
yet annabeth knowing percy stopped him yes in fear but in fear of the fact that that is simply not percy percy is the most mortal demigod we’ve met (him and piper tbh) he’s lived his life with mortal morals and he barely uses his powers bc of it so when he’s using his powers to literally kill a goddess like who tf is that ?? and who would he have been if he had gone through with it
i think that’s a pretty easy summary of why percy doesn’t really use his powers much as well he’s always seen himself as just some guy he doesn’t really like ppl calling him a hero he doesn’t really show off (on purpose/without reason) he’s just fighting to survive or to get shit done which is a very human trait percy is a very humble guy and it would just be crazy to see how much more powerful he’d be if he wasn’t bc ik a lot of that is what’s holding him back
also i think it’s interesting to point out the fact that percy used a sword when fighting hades in comparison to tartarus when he used just his powers id be interested to see what nico/annabeth would’ve thought if they were in each others shoes in those moments
also interesting that in both cases he doesn’t go through with it (killing a god/goddess) for 2 different reasons but what would they have done if he did …
i’m realising the purpose at the start of this is very different then what it ended in but i’d like to hear what ppl think if i’m just yapping or if anyone else knows wtf im talking abt lmao

The Marshall's in my area usually doesn't carry Rick and Morty merchandise, but even they can't deny the thrill of the annual holiday marketing blitz. 🎁
And apparently, socks are in season!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love how this package looks like a pint of ice cream.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rick wants YOU to buy these double-sided socks!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If those aren't enough, these socks come in a festive box. I actually love the artwork on this one.

After this adventure, I went to Five Below. I figured that new calendars would be coming out soon, and sure enough:

Yeah...I wouldn't want to look at Jerricky for an entire month. Summer bench-pressing Rick is still hilarious, though.
They also had smaller versions for your desk or cubicle:

Five Below had to get in on the sock action, too.

No matter how long Rick and Morty airs, that season one promo image is never going away. Personally, I'm still waiting for more Crow Rick merchandise. Come on, Adult Swim, he's the best thing in the show! 🐦‍⬛

are you alright ?
c.g
warnings: none, fluff
carl grimes x f!reader
info: carl and reader are both 15/16 (s6) this is set in the alexandria era of the walking dead. carl never lost his eye !
Tumblr media
you’ve known carl for a while. since you got to alexandria a few months ago. you still remember enid introducing you to everyone. you were nervous, not knowing how people would react to a new girl joining their group. you met everyone, it took you a while to learn their names, but you got the hang of it. carl, enid, ron, mikey. even though you’ve been here a while, they don’t know anything about you. well, not really. they don’t know that you were alone for more than a whole year after your family were ripped apart in front of you, they don’t know-
enough about that. you and carl have never really been fond of eachother. always bickering about something. you didn’t hate carl, hate is a strong word, you just don’t get along. that was, until, the alexandrian walls got smushed by a falling watch tower. walkers flooded in like water in a bath. people started dying. you heard screaming and went outside to be met with a bunch of walkers. you backed into an alley between yours and carl’s house, trembling at the sounds of the walkers gnawing on peoples flesh, the dead eating the living. you hit your head on something, wincing at, the pain. you could hear the screaming of terror or pain from their victims. your thoughts were put on a halt at the feeling of someone grabbing you…
a walker. you shoved it away, reaching for your knife in your waistband. it’s stuck. you began thinking of other ways to pierce through its brain, but then a knife stabbed through the back of its skull, blood spilling all over your body. the walker dropped, revealing carl standing there, a knife in his hand.
“are you alright? it didn’t bite you, did it?”
you stayed frozen, not knowing what to do with yourself as he quickly checked you for bites.
“no.” you managed to croak, and he looked up at your face.
“and you’re sure of it?”
you didn’t reply to that. he pulled you both through a door and into his house, before blocking up every door and window. his family always keep wood in the basement, especially for things like these. almost like they expected it.
he sat you on a chair and looked over you again, seeing the blood seeping from your head.
“walker did this?”
“no. i hit my head.” you mumbled, looking down as he lifted your chin, inspecting it.
“we better cover it. it could get infected.”
you didn’t protest, just sitting there as he got out a first aid kit and put rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab. your face scrunched at the pain as he dabbed your wound. he noticed, he didn’t stop though. knowing that it was for your own good.
he bandaged the cut as you still sat there, the silence uncomfortable.
“done.” he finally spoke up, you flinching at the sound.
“thanks…” you mumbled, rubbing your eyes. everything had happened so fast. “where’s your family?” he looked at you. “i think their at glenn and maggie’s, their alright.” he smiled.
you felt your face heat up when you saw that grin. he brushed a strand of your hair behind your ear. this was probably the first time you’d every gotten along. and to be honest, it felt nice. for a while, you just sat there, gazing into eachothers eyes.
then he cleared his throat, stepping back. “what do you suppose is going to happen? out there, i mean.”
you looked at him and shrugged, your face still pinky from before.
“i’m not sure.”
about a month later, everything was back to normal. ish. there were not walkers, but about half of your people were gone. including the leader. so now, rick grimes has taken over for her. you and carl fought less, and lately, you’ve even began to catch feelings for him. you haven’t said anything, just in case he doesn’t feel the same. but everyday that feeling gets stronger. and soon, you’re bound to pop.
you’re at ron’s house with carl, mikey and enid. enid clearly has a thing for carl, which makes you feel left out. especially when he flirts back. it makes your blood boil. mikey and ron are playing a video game while carl is reading a comic and enid is next to him. you’re just standing there, really. half the time you don’t even know why you’re there. and then you see enid touching carls sleeve. that was the last straw.
you cleared your throat, “i’m gonna go get a drink.” you left the room quickly, going to the kitchen. you sat at the island for a while, before carl came in.
“something wrong?” he questioned, raising an eyebrow. “you kinda stormed outa there.”
you just looked at him, not replying.
“y/n, really? i’m trying to help here.”
“does what happened a month or so ago not matter to you? what was that?” you blurted.
he sat next to you. “i could say the same thing.” he looked at you.
you didn’t know what to say to that, and just sat there.
“i didn’t think you were comfortable with it.” he claimed, his eyebrows knitting slightly.
“what’s that with enid then?” he looked at you, slightly surprised.
“there’s nothing with enid. nothing. I promise. i’ve told her to stop, but she won’t listen.” he got closer, “it’s you that i like, y/n.”
you looked at him, “and you’re sure?”
he chuckled, rolling his eyes. “yes, i’m extremely sure.” you smiled, he held your chin. “you’re beautiful, you know?”
“I’ve never kissed anyone.” you quickly quipped, he smirked. “even better.” your lips joint.
that was your first of many kisses with him.
Tumblr media
this was my first ever time writing, thank you for reading! (i accidentally deleted it like twice and had to re-write it, damn)
i know it’s quite short and not the best but i tried and i hope to get better!
please leave suggestions or tips and tricks if you have any, i hope you enjoyed!

Four almost dads take a little girl to a pumpkin patch and nothing bad happens
-
“Will!” Leo shouts through a rainbow, scaring the shit out of the blond as he preps dinner
“Jesus fuuuu-freaking Christ man what do you want ?” Will saves just in time, still getting used to having impressionable ears around 24/7
“Pumpkin patch!”
“Pumpkin patch?”
“We need to go to a pumpkin patch”
“Aren't you supposed to be wedding prepping?”
“No shut up, I just learned Jason’s never gone”
There is a muffled call of “I've been to a patch of pumpkins before” from somewhere on the other side of the rainbow.
“Babe a garden doesn't count!” Leo yells back before returning to Will “Also it would be fun to take Katie she needs a pumpkin”
The eight-year-old perks up at the sound of her name, having been too busy in her own world of coloring to pay attention to grown-ups. Today the drawing is of Festus, a welcome break from her usual repertoire of what they're pretty sure is her bio dad being brutally ripped apart and eaten by Cyclops.
Nico is sitting right next to their foundling at the table, a research text in one hand and his sketchbook in the other as he picks his way through the spellwork of his current case. But Will can tell his husband is listening by how he’s no longer taking detailed notes.
“ Anyways ,” Leo continues on, his gestures getting bigger in his excitement “I found this place that-“
Leo’s arm goes right through the rainbow, disconnecting the call. Will takes the opportunity to go sit at the dining table with his family before Leo calls back so they can all be in the frame.
“We can go in the middle of the week,” Leo says without greeting as the rainbow reconnects “It's not like Katie is in school or anything right now”
It's true, she's not. She legally barely exists at the moment, just enough for Will and his husband to be her foster parents, making it so the truancy office is none the wiser. Right now they are focused on her mental and physical health, getting her into doctors and helping with her episodes. She obviously has some PTSD from her time in the swamp, and she's still underweight as well. They only just got an order in for braces for her weird backward knees, but it's still a week out until they are ready.
Therapy on the other hand they were able to find through The Program. Dr. Block isn't a demigod nor does he have the sight, but his sister is a child of Dionysus making him in the loop on the magical world. They have more mortals with halfling families joining these days, their family members living to adulthood opening doors on both sides.
It's probably the best that she's not in school at the moment, she's only been officially theirs for a little over a month since they brought her home from camp. The kid is still a little unsure about getting left again, and still very unsure of the outside world in general. The only places she truly relaxes are the di Solace apartment and the Way Station.
“Also there will be fewer people then” Leo presses on “easier on Chiquita and spotting monsters”
“Neeks?” Will checks
“I don’t have anything time-sensitive,” Nico says with a shrug before turning to the eight-year-old “You wanna go on an adventure Mostriciattola?”
Katie looks taken aback by being asked her opinion on the planning, so it takes a second for her to pause before thinking it over and then nodding with a smile.
“Perfect!” Leo exclaims “You have some days off next week right -”
So next Wednesday the five of them pile into Will’s little four door and drive out of town to the pumpkin patch.
They were able to find Katie a pair of green heavy-duty rain boots in her size from the Way Station’s collection, and she has her new favorite pair of embroidered overalls stuffed into them. It had been fun getting ready this morning, their little apartment bustling with the addition of Leo and Jason. Leo helps Nico get the kid ready by putting her hair in a pair of french-braids, and Jason helping Will pack the cooler. They have gone on double-date outings like this before, but the addition of Katie is making it extra joyful.
Leo drives because Will is sleep-deprived and Jason shouldn't and Nico hates it and if Leo doesn't he gets car sick. Something about being able to feel the machine working while the world moves around him, but when he drives he can just be the machine and it's fine. Whatever, Will passes out fifteen minutes in anyway.
Katie wakes him when they get there, climbing over Will in her rush to get out. Then she's doing that excited stim she does, a little stomping dance from foot to foot, before giving a spin so she can shake Will's arm.
“I'm up I'm up” he laughs, Katie gives him a huge grin and then speeds off to see what Nico and Leo doing in the trunk.
“Okay,” Jason admits as he steps out of the shotgun passenger door  “This is not a patch of pumpkins”
It is very much not a single patch of pumpkins. The place was at one point a family farm, most of the original buildings have been repurposed into things like gift shops and cafes. There is a large corn maze off in the distance, hand-painted wooden signs showing the way to the pick-your-own orchards and caramel apples. There is a playground made of hay bales and a paddock of animals to pet and feed.
With the leaves just changing color and the air slightly crisp the whole place feels cozy and autumnal. Both Katie and Jason are looking around in amazement, Will wonders if their kid has ever been to something like this before
Fortunately, the place isn't crowded. There are what looks like a handful of families and one group of preschoolers on a field trip. This is good, because they all figured out fast that Katie struggles with large crowds, becoming quickly overwhelmed. They haven't figured out if it's her PTSD or obvious neurodivergence yet, but Will suspects it's a combination of the two.
When they start off towards the buildings Katie quickly falls behind, even with everyone walking slowly. It is hard for people over six feet to compensate for a little girl with a disability, so Jason gleefully crouched down to ask if he can carry her. Then the big softy has the kid perched on the crook of his arm bent close to his body. Katie's smile is blinding, one arm holding onto Jason's shoulder the other free to stim on the floral embroidery of her overalls or to point when she spots something interesting.
“Fuck that's cute” Leo murmurs to himself before catching up with his fiancee and taking his free hand in his own
Tumblr media
Katie directs the group with her gestures, for a kid who still won't really talk she communicates very clearly. The four of them are perfectly happy to go where she wants, a lot of it is peering at plants and decorations until they find the menagerie of animals behind a wire paddock. They scrounge some quarters between them to get pellets from the coin-operated machine, totally worth it for the little giggle the cows get out of Katie when they eat from her hand.
Nico is audibly surprised so many of the barn animals aren't running screaming from him, that is until they figure out that the cows are obsessed with Jason.
“I hate this” Jason gripes, but he's not moving away because Katie is half leaning out of his arms to pet the cows and get all slobbered on. The ones not getting loved on by the kid are inching closer staring at Jason like he has something they want, a few of them attempting to mouth at what they can reach of his sweater sleeves.
“I think they have peacocks in the next pen” Nico points with a shit-eating grin.
True to his word, the next paddock is full of birds, and the two peacocks and single peahen are staring down the son of Jupiter like they want to eat him. Jason lets out a little puppy whine of distress.
That gets the girl's attention, turning back to the blond with a concerned face and papping at his cheek with a bovine-slobber-covered hand.
“It's okay,  I'm okay” Jason tries to reassure her, but Will can tell the expression doesn't reach his eyes by the way she frowns.
They have found that Katie does this thing, where she will study your face for a long moment until she finds what she is looking for. It's a little unnerving, big dark round eyes boring into your own with such intensity many people become taken aback. Will finds it reminds him of Nico as he tries to parse some dead something out of your aura, or when an Aphrodite kid is looking into your love lines. Taking a peek into parts of you that only someone touched by the divine can do
They have no clue what she can see in people when she does that, but it feels like she's looking deep into your heart and separating out your true intentions.
Also, the longer Jason has worked on his own mental health the shittier his poker face has become, so for Katie he's not a hard egg to crack. She wipes cow spit off on his sweater and points to the hand sanitizer dispenser.
“Ready to clean up” he asks, trying his best to keep the relief out of his voice, Katie nods yes and points again.
Katie directs them to pumpkins next. It's a small hay ride to the patch, lame compared to the ones back in Texas though Jason looks a little spooked by the rattling of the cart, past an apple orchard heavy with dark fruit. The kid has no interest in the trees, she's off following the hand-painted signage to the pumpkin patch before they are all of the tractor bed. Nico is quick to follow her, and they are in the waist-high grass before anyone can stop them, though Leo hangs back for a moment to squint at the tractor.
Will immediately starts to fret watching his husband and kid toddle about into the tall grass “What if there's ticks”
“Can't you like, psychically remove ticks?” Leo asks.
“I can check for lyme disease and stop spirochetes, it's not the same”
“I think it's too cold for ticks now” Leo tries to reassure.
“I can zap the ticks off” Jason supplies plainly like it will help anything.
Leo gives his fiancee one of his patented ‘babe that's ferial wolf shit’ looks “You are not zapping ticks off the kiddo” he tells him.
“It's always been fine before, I just get staticy and they fall right off”
“Anyways” Leo breaks in, “I think it will be fine”
Will's worry spiral is interrupted by Katie’s little ‘whoop’ of success, holding a pumpkin bigger than her torso above her head. The three of them clap and cheer as Nico tries to help steady her on the uneven muddy ground, but she is not deterred. She's carrying the gourd through the dead cattails and goldenrod back to the group and looking very pleased with herself.
Katie plants her big orange prize at Will’s feet and is then dragging Jason into the grass and vines by the hand, determined to get him a pumpkin too. Leo and Nico switch places as the small child guardian, Will’s husband with his own much smaller pumpkin on his hip.
“There are no ticks,” Nico tells him, sliding his free hand into one of Will’s back jean pockets, knowing his worries as always “I can tell they sprayed”
“Okay,” he relents a little, leaning into his husband's shoulder.
“Do you want to go get a pumpkin?”
Will pulls his lips thin, watching Leo struggling to keep Katie from eating a frankly ginormous grasshopper as Jason snacks on a rogue pumpkin flower.
“I promise there's no ticks”
“Promise?”
“Promise” Nico squeezes his butt with the hand in his pocket “Also I don't think Leo can keep both of them from eating bugs at the same time”
“Fair enough” Will relents with a snort of laughter, and wades into the grass to join the commotion.
After paying they drop the pumpkins off at the car, no use hulling them around. It also gives them a chance to get drinks from the cooler and remove the bits of dead plants off Katie. She doesn't look to mind all of the fussing over her, everyone picking bits of foliage and seeds out of her hair and clothes as they spot them, she's perfectly happy to sit on the ledge of the trunk with the gourds, drink her juice-box, and kick her boots against the bumper.
“Not sure where we should go next,” Nico asks as he studies the map Will nabbed when they got there “What else is there to do now that we have pumpkins?”
Jason tilts his head to the side like a confused dog “I thought you said you have been to one of these places before”
“Yeah but that was for like, a zombie outbreak” Nico confesses with a shrug “This is the first time I've gotten to explore without the undead”
“I mean, you could add the undead” Leo teases, Katie perks up excited at the idea.
“No” Jason and Will monotone together, both Leo and Katie huff and complain good naturally and then grin at each other like the little goblins they are.
“We can just wander around” Will supplies, peering at the paper over his husband's shoulder “There's like food stalls and stuff”
“Sound like a plan?” Nico asks Katie, she smiles around the last of her juice box and nods.
They pick their way back across the gravel parking lot to the main buildings. Leo is squinting at the pick-your-own tractor that is currently loading the preschool group as they pass “There's something off with the tractor”
“Leave the tractor alone,” Jason tells him.
“But-”
“Leave the tractor alone,” Nico and Jason say together, Leo sighs deeply and dramatically.
They get caramel apples at the cute little stand, mostly because Jason has never heard of them and the way Katie’s eyes get big and excited at the colorful display of toppings. Will insists on making sure they are cut (because choking hazards and the feral idiots chewing on the sticks), but that doesn't stop his kid from forgoing her fork to excitedly scarf down her treat and becoming incredibly sticky, it's very cute.
“Do not lick her” Leo warns his fiancee with a threatening plastic fork, clocking something in Jason’s posture and clueing Will in that it's time to clean her up.
“ But ” Jason starts, looking conflicted “but puppy -”
“Don't lick my kid” Nico reinforces, Jason gives a huff sigh of defeat and pitifully watches Will clean Katie off with a wet-wipe.
Katie acts like he's trying to waterboard her, squirming and trying to suck the excess charmel off her fingers. The wet-wipes quickly get abandoned so Will can take her over to the hand washing station situated by the port-a-potties. The eight-year-old is fine washing her hands on her own, so Will gets one of the bandannas out of his bag to sneakily wet under the spigot.
“Ah-ha!” he laughs at his kid as he wipes her down, her face scrunching against being cleaned  “Got you.” She gives him a stink face when he's done and then drys herself off on his sweater sleeve, he guesses that makes them even.
They wander for a while after that, either letting Katie lead the way or encouraging her game of musical adults that consists of getting passed from one pair of arms to another at her insistence. There are gardens and decoration displays to look at, lots of things to climb and explore, and photo ops at every turn. It feels like someone is always taking a picture, and no one is being sneaky about it, Will even catches his husband setting his lock screen to a photo of Will holding their kid among a huge patch of mums and marigolds and smiling to himself.
Eventually, they make it to the back of the property where the corn maze is. The thing is huge and intricate, the map on the plack showing that it has shapes of stars and moons and a smiling jack-o-lantern in the design.
“Do we wanna race?” Will asks, hand in his pockets.
The normal double date plan when they do something like this is a competition, either splitting up as couples or one pair against the other to see who can get through faster.
Jason is not a competitive person, not like Will can be, and neither tends to be Nico. At least until Leo Valdez is in the picture, whatever it is about that man brings out this sibling-like competitiveness in Will’s husband. Something about their part goblin part I-have-known-this-person- way -too-long-and-lived-through- way -too-much-of-each-others-bullshit esk relationship just makes them egg each other on in the right circumstance.
This time they have Katie though, making the teams uneven.
Leo has that covered “You wanna see if we can beat your dads at the maze” he asks the girl.
And that's pretty awesome, to be called Katie’s dad, Will is still getting used to it. She hasn't called them ‘dad’ yet, at least not out loud (but that's not much of a surprise, she doesn't say much) but she's acknowledged them as such in other ways. Mostly in how she reacts when others call them her dads, pointing or agreeing when they do.
Like now, with Katie nodding and confirming. She does an excited little hop before turning to Will and Nico and sticking out her tongue.
“Rules?” Jason asks, knowing his fiancee.
“No powers, no inventions, no weapons, no explosions, no flying, no talking to the dead” Will ticks off on his fingers.
“And no talking to birds!” Leo adds.
“I can not control what the birds have to say to me” Jason defends
“To the middle or the end?” Nico breaks in before they get into another spiral of how far passive powers can go before it's cheating.
“Uuuuuuh”
They all look at the laminated map of the maze stapled to the plack to decide, Katie points at a tower structure towards the center.
“To the tower?” Will asks
Katie smiles and nods yes.
“To the tower it is!”
“Couples or blonds vs brunets” Leo asks the child.
Katie thinks for a second, grins, and then tugs Nico over to Leo.
“Then it's settled!”
Per camp rules, the youngest gets to count down the start of the race. Katie does so with her fingers, the second she gets to zero Leo scoops her up under his arm like a sack of potatoes and sprints off down the tunnel to the right, Nico hot on his heels. Will can hear his kid’s giggle through the dried plants as she’s sped off.
“Oh we're totally losing this aren't we,” Jason asks.
“Yep” Will confirms, and they both set off to the left.
“I gotta ask” Jason starts as they wander through the half-dead corn “How are you three doing?”
“Good, I mean” They take a turn to the right past a quaint little scarecrow, Will putting his hands in his hoodie pockets against the breeze punching through the leaves “You’re probably hearing it all from Nico”
“Yeah but I wanna hear it from you”
“It’s pretty awesome,” Will can’t help but smile remembering the little patter of bare feet inbound for a hug every time he unlocks the door at the end of the day “I wish I was home more, but we knew that was going to be a thing from the beginning. I can’t deny that coming home to a full house doesn’t make my day”
Jason grins at that “She has a way of lighting up the room doesn’t she”
“She really does” Will agrees “and she’s already doing loads better. I’m really proud of how well she’s done today”
“Yeah Leo did good finding this place”
“He totally did. We just want to wait a little longer until we take the next steps, I want her a little more back on her feet before she makes a big decision”
“Hm?”
“We want to ask her if she wants to be adopted,” Will says “It's really her choice, she might still have other family out there”
“But you want to adopt her?”
“Gods yes,” Will says tipping his head back “More than anything, we should have done it from the jump”
“You should have” Jason agrees matter a fact, but he's already bitten Nico’s head off about this “But she's here now”
“She is” Will looks both ways at a fork as Jason sniffs the air, both deciding left at the same time “She always felt so right”
“What are you gonna do if she still has family out there”
“I mean we're looking” because they are, because it matters “Nico has feelers out on the dead end, but it's been no luck so far. She deserves that opportunity”
“And if you find her family?”
“Then we take it from there” Will shrugs. He doesn't want to give Katie up, but everything he's been reading about adoption says that kids do best with their family of origin, or even just keeping bio family in their life. Will and his husband are ready to do whatever they need to do for their kid.
They lose the race, getting to the tower finish line a bit after the other half of their group. Nico is holding Katie in a front carry, looking like an adorable mix of tickled pink and hating life. Leo on the other hand is laughing so hard he's bent at the waist with a hand braised on the wooden structure to keep himself upright as he wracked with mirth.
“What happened?” Will asks
“Katie called me ‘dad’-” Nico starts.
“No!” Leo interjects as he catches his breath “ Chiquita what did you call him?!”
“Papi!” the kid declares, a quiet chirp and so so proud of herself, turning to look at Will in his husband's arms with a big smile.
Nico groans but doesn't correct their kid, pointing his face to the sky in a proud ‘why me?’. Will can't help but melt at the sight.
“Aw,” he coos “is Nico your dad?”
Katie frowns at Will like he's stupid and shakes her head no. “Papi” she insists, quiet but firm. Then the whole world changes as she points to Will next and declares “Dad”
Will points to himself “I'm Dad?” Katie nods yes enthusiastically, he can feel the smile that's splitting his face as he chokes out “I can be Dad”
Katie smiles impossibly wider and reaches for him, and who is Will but to take his kid out of his husband's arms and hug her close.
“Are you crying” Leo bullies
“No” Will sniffles wetly, then sneezes because of the lie. Katie startles at the sneeze, looks at Will like he's gross (fair), and squirms to get put down.
“I think your adoption talk is going to go well,” Jason tells him as his kid toddles off to torment Leo, clapping him on the shoulder.
Will grins and wipes at his eyes “I think so too”

Notes:
How ‘Papi’ actually happened
Nico and Leo are discussing different words that are the same in both Spanish and Italian (Katie is pointing at things to demand their names in both languages)
Leo AuADHD no filter ping pong ass brain Valdez: lol it's so funny that ‘Papi’ is a word for dad in both languages
Katie (pointing at Nico): Papi
Nico: 🥲
I have also settled on what the Katie Stare actually is. She has always been able to see and manipulate things that take the form of ‘fibers’, breaking down make-ups and patterns they hold in her mind (a legacy gift). So technically she pinging into the neuro pathways in the brain and getting what is a basic ‘vibe read’. If you asked her what she was doing she would only be able to describe it as a ‘vibe check’. It's not super strong, Will’s a better lie detector with just his allergies, and she has to focus to use it but it gets the job done. I like the idea that a lot of powers are not always understood on the scientific side because of how demigod culture is under-researched with all the dying and all, but there are technicalities to gifts if people decide to study them.

#the first time he did it in unmortricken i was like Fuck Yes and little did i know he would just keep doing it the whole time#DESPERATELY hoping they keep both of these things. i Love when characters have tiny little habits sprinkled in their actions#to me these things kinda sorta symbolise him no longer being afraid to really be himself#like he no longer has to hide certain things about himself that inside of the cfc wouldve made him appear ‘suspicious’#since he IS like so much different than any other morty ever#also barely related but like. em is fundamentally such a good character bc everytime we see him he’s feeling something different#in his first appearance he was cold and distant because at the time he was new to being free and was strictly focused on his goal and wasn’#even sure if it would work#in his second appearance he seemed hopeful and honest both of these things just being a trap to get the people of the citadel to trust him#and his old colder self unfurling near the end after he successfully becomes president#in his third appearance he seems giddy almost. he’s constantly giggling before and after sentences and he’s super eager to just Get The Hel#Out. and also to reveal the truth to morty prime. make it so that he doesn’t have to be the one to shoulder everything anymore.#and this fourth appearance. apart from a few little details he really just seems happy and comfortable. the entire episode he was just doin#whatever he wanted and nobody got in his way at all. and i could not be happier#normal about this character!#rick and morty#evil morty#rick and morty spoilers#odiespeak

Consider:
Leo Valdez was not born. Instead, two pairs of hands form him from bronze and steel and gold. His hair is copper wires so thin they bounce like natural curls, and his eyes glimmer with silver flakes. The joints of his body are plated so delicately, so perfectly, the segments are near indiscernible, smoothly gliding over each other. Faint traces of fingerprints and flecks of impurity are deliberately left behind for their uniqueness, a form of impossible signature of his creators.
Most importantly, gilded bars curl around each other in his chest, protecting the red-red-red flame that pushes his eyes open everyday, that beats in tune with his thoughts, that heats his body to expand and grow.
A metal child is not so different from a human one, and yet is so far from it at the same time. He is curious, about the world, about himself, and he picks apart toys and TV remotes and his arms, spilling their secrets before his constantly shifting eyes. He does not cry from fatigue or thirst or hunger, but a bump, a dent, a scratch never fail to draw tears. He splashes in the rain and snow, carefully bundled in waterproof coats and jackets, and runs from baths like he's possessed, fire flickering in fear.
The first time he meets someone like him, an endeavour he had long thought hopeless, it is a malfunctioning dragon others call for the death of; he is too unpredictable, too dangerous, too broken. Leo looks him in ever-shifting eyes glimmering with silver and sees himself if the cage in his chest ever bends, cracks, shatters, if the gears beneath his skin ever jam and stick and wear down irreversibly.
It is not golden flowers and godly aid that preserve him; just as he'd done for his twin-in-all-but-appearance, he creates a new body, with new fingerprints and impurities mapping his design. His hair is more bronze than copper, now, and his eyes more gold than brass. The plates of his joints scrape against each other faintly, and the gears of his bones grind together uncomfortably — he only had so much time, so much material to use, he could not polish every element of himself in the way he wished, but it holds together.
Most importantly, he reinforces the cage in his chest, coats it in layers upon layers of metal, to ensure his flame will not go out in the explosion, that Festus will be able to salvage it and lay it gently in the chest cavity carefully carved in his new body, bringing it to life.
He returns to Camp, movements more clunky and mechanical than should be, and his siblings finally pin down his segmented limbs, his shifting eyes, his clicking fidgeting. They are ecstatic, just as fascinated with him as they had been with Festus, and he lets them. He lets them take him apart, piece by piece, clean out the sand of Ogygia from his organs, polish and oil his gears until they glide against each other, press new fingerprints, new signatures of belonging, against his skin.
Most importantly, they craft him a secure, intricate cage, with golden flames licking up the bars, with delicate chains shielding it from the elements, and his flame settles inside it, flickering happily, finally truly, truly comfortable in the cage of his body.
Leo Valdez may not have been born, but he was crafted with the most loving hands imaginable, and is that not so much better, for a son of the Craftsman?

I find it sad, pathetic, funny and cute in that cartoon network is airing the old man and his seat two times tonight in a row. All I do is sit around the house and get drunk and cry-I would never waste my precious free time watching Cartoon Network, but I happened upon the schedule for the night and I think it's funny, silly, in a really pathetic way that it feels like Rick has the same drunk sad drunk soulfully loveless aimless energy as much as I do, just sitting on a TV screen instead of real life

I wished pjo had focused in on modernization of the mythology. Not just "if this thing from the original myths are now this" but make new myths.
Think the reason we notice when certain things aren't right to the original myths is that Rick tries so hard to only give the feeling that the mythical world has adapted, not changed.
Sure, the gods mention how they're precieved and worship can change them. But that's only presented to us in terms of Roman sides of them. How messed up some of the gods interpretations are could feel a lot less sour if we got more confirmation that "Yeah, they're like that because of how the world now sees them and what they represent has corrupted who they were originally."
You can't tell me that thousands of years have gone by and there's not a single new monster. That a god didn't get mad once and made mothman or something.
There are a lot of modern mythologies without an actual tie to another religion.
Give me Loch Ness being a mortal who slighted Poseidon or a water god in the area it's now in.
Big Foot,Jersey Devil,The Tennessee Terror,Sea Serpants of the Gulf, the wolf woman of mobile etc
Heck, even other more recent ones like Slenderman and the Rake
I much rather have that then have gods and demigods be heavily involved or the cause of wars with very sensitive causes(what the fuck were you thinking with WW2 and Civil War Rick. Wtf)
But yeah. Honestly think seeing modern legends be used would be cool. And I must reiterate specifically those not already tied to another religion or culture. Legends that aren't sensitive to brouch on. Feel very important to mention when talking about crypids(especially as majority are in America) cause if you just look them up lot of them might add legends from native culture to the roster and they're already tied to something.
Anyway. Just thoughts on my brain I wanted to share. Think modern beings in pjo could've been so cool. Like America is full of folklore that was made post colonization,it wouldn't be shocking if the gods created part of that.

The art is lovely and now I'm gonna ramble because that's what I do when I care about something.
For the love of women, please PLEASE can fan artists remember to add muscle to their Shadowhunter ladies? I'll commend Bowater for cleverly giving James that sculpted and lean look without making him a beefcake (nothing against beefcakes, I'd love to hug them), but Cordelia is once again suffering from Arms And Shoulders Too Slender It's Hard To Even Imagine Her Picking Up A Sword. There is some there, yes, but artists shouldn't be afraid of giving particularly Female Main Characters weight and toned muscle. Cordelia is supposed to be nearly the same height as James as far as I can remember, and she's curvy, and full, and she wields a sword like it's second nature to her. Please explain why she looks so tiny in James' lap.
Also I'm pretty sure marriage runes are supposed to go over the heart whenever possible (thinking about Will's parabatai rune being over his heart instead -- he didn't get Tessa to draw over the scar, did he??) and... either I'm looking at the picture wrong or James' rune is not over where his heart should be.
For the matter, where are their other runes and scars?? James' Voyance rune isn't even on his hand. And I'm pretty sure he's right handed. I could have that wrong though.
Another thing: no one can ever decide what Cordelia's hair looks like and it's the funniest thing to me. This is what happens when all you do is vaguely say the colour is like fire but also like rose petals but also a flowing river of those things but also is Red (probably for redhead, but then from there I never understand where the rose petal analogy comes from considering the typical rose is a deep bloody colour -- I do acknowledge the existence of those light orange varieties though which might more closely resemble red hair). In the end, I'm glad readers can infer what they want and imagine the characters how they like.
Anyone else think James looks like he's built like a tennis player? Oddly specific, maybe, but it was a thought I had. Mostly the arms and somewhat narrow body.
James' hair is nice, his eyes are an interesting take on gold in the shadows. Bowater managed to also make him look closely related to his father, so bravo for that.
In the end, the focus is obviously on the marriage runes and not other physical aspects outside of it being clear that this is James and Cordelia. Bowater's style is very beautiful and elegant. Love the way fabric and lighting is done too. I'll add also that it is possible to be a smaller person who is slender but still strong so I mean Cordelia's not necessarily done wrong, I just interpret her appearance differently. Obviously, they're both hot and they're both attractive and I have my qualms with the series, chronicles, and author -- the fandom I am so-so on, though I'm still here, aren't I? And I'm taking the time to ramble about my thoughts on a piece of fanart -- but this is good. Gorgeous, even. Both James and Cordelia are beautiful.
#side note: am I the only one who thought cc made a mistake trying to describe james as handsome in cordelia's eyes#as opposed to matthew being the beautiful one#when there has always been a deep and aching strange beauty to james??#james herondale#cordelia carstairs#vaguely crediting charlie bowater though it isn't like you can't find a dozen more copies of this with the credit#also yes I mercilessly picked this apart because I am still trying to find avenues to express my dissatisfaction with tlh#I search for flaws what else can I say#I am aware of it but it's hard to turn those thoughts processes off#maybe I'll write a post at some point all about the authors I once Loved that I am now deeply critical of#a lot of people would hate me for it but eh#also we all know about the marvelisation of cinema#but is it time to talk about the marvelisation of book series/worlds?#or perhaps it has a better and more book-focused name? the jkr approach? rick riordan's marvel-esque flaw? the sjm plague? the clare affair?#we'll workshop it#maybe it's the curse of middleschool-YA series and the issue of aginh readers in fandoms#and I don't mean this as discriminatory against anyone older in fandom because there is not really a limit nor should there be#for most media#but the issue of when the readers grow up amd authors try to accomodate for that -- not necessarily by making their work more adult --#but by making MORE because there is also an influx of new fans and they want to stay relevant while retaining the old#it's a whole thing though I'd need to sit down to properly organise my thoughts to talk about it
