not to bring tiktok drama on tumblr but like every time a ‘scandal’ comes out with one of these ‘production companies’ that make fan films i always hope we’re finally gonna discuss how they professionalize something that should be an hobbyist endeavor… and yet every single time i’m disappointed.

#like I know we’ve been talking about it here on tumblr and i remember seeing like one or two videos on tt about it #but other than that creators really don’t seem to be engaging critically with the impact that the very nature of what they’re doing has #and look i truly do love the art that some of the people involved in the project make #like arone is truly one of the most talented cosplayers i know #ethan is an amazing actor and I’ve followed him since before he was even in the marauders #dorian is a great writer and idk the others as well but I’m sure they are all great artists #((naming the just cause i feel like being vague would be worse in this case))#and i do believe they engaged with the project with the best of intentions #without knowing or trying to afford grace on past controversy #and it truly is a horrible predicament to have your work be tainted like that for something you had no control over #but like i do think we should be questioning the very idea of how this fanfilms have been made is inherently a problem #like fanfilms are essentially fanfiction on camera #so as long as a few cosplayers want to get together with their iphones write a script and shoot at the local park I don’t have a problem #but if you are putting in place a product that somehow requires you to fundraise consistently for two years then I have a problem with it #ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE SELLING THE SCRIPT TO DO SO #cause even if that script hadn’t been ai generated #that script is fanfiction and you do. not. sell. fanfiction.#seriously like… do we need to go over our abc again?#like fanart and cosplayers are a bit different in the sense that people sell fanart/do commissions and they can be professional cosplayers #but for any other fanmade project that requires you to put pen to paper (or keyboard to chatgpt ig)#you need to be engaging with several ethical questions regarding any exchange of money #and personally i don’t think that there’s been engagement with those ethical reflections #and this isn’t about any of the people involved and not even about mischief productions specifically #it’s about a wider issue in how we have been collectively normalizing a way of doing things that should not be normal #and like yes star using ai and being overall not good is bad but like can we talk about EVERYTHING ELSE please

I'm back from my trip and ready to return to the drawing things for Sparkstember grind, I mean, well, I need to rest first for even a little bit and also get used to having more than 1 hour of free time a day tops. Yeag it's been kind of intense but still a great adventure and a good time. And most importantly, I have this photo from it

#i love how easy it is to pose this plushie to make it look like it's showing you something #a 'look! behold!' type of pose #you wouldn't believe how many times i had to fight very hard against the want to buy myself another plushie #at least 5 times over the course of this single week. but i prevailed!#some other highlights from the trip: visiting a huge cave #absolutely MAGICAL experience. hard to believe that these kind of places really exist in this world and can be visited #also stepping into the sea. not enough of it though i need to be submerged in water for a longer period of time still #hmmmm. what else. it was all very good. OH YEAH there was an exhibition of old instruments in one place #including stuff like keyboard instruments like harpsichord and pipe organ etc which was AWESOME #and i return from this trip adding 4 new magnets to my magnets from my travels collection. really good number #anyways i think i needed this even just as a sort of way to reset completely #but ofc it's also great to be able to do whatever i want with my time now (temporarily)#i was ready to forget that this would ever be the case again #ok. next big trip that i'll be talking about incessantly this time: in just a bit over 2 months #goosepost

hey so important heads up for users of amazon (especially if you have your ebooks through amazon):

if your account is locked (such as because of repeated failed login attempts from an unrecognized device, as an example), the ONLY way to unlock it is by providing information about your recent amazon purchases that have been made within the past year. if you have made no amazon purchases within the last year, there is no way to unlock your account.

in other words, if you have for example your entire ebook collection associated with your amazon account and that's your only way to access it, and you don't purchase something for a year, and amazon arbitrarily locks you out for some reason, you will permanently lose access to ALL your books with zero recourse.

I spoke to a customer service person at amazon today to try to unlock my account, who explained that in the system on her end there is NO other option to unlock an account except verifying the recent purchases, and if there hasn't been a purchase recently enough that option isn't available to them to access.

so uh. fuck amazon to hell for their ability to steal all your books at random and give you no way to get them back.

#luckily i share a separate accoutn with my sister where we pool our ebooks for a bigger collection we can both read #and the account i got locked out of was my personal account #so like in my case I didn't lose anything except my wishlist and record of what seller I bought my favourite keyboard from #but like jfc now I'm like. what will happen if this ever happens to my ebook account????#like fuck me guess it's time to figure out if I can download an actual file for the books from amazon #and start keeping all the actual files of the actual books on my storage hard drive #like for FUCK'S sake there's nothing these days you buy digitally that is actually YOURS #always a middle man holding access who can steal your goddamn shit from you at any time #makes me insane #like sorry that I don't want to participate in a fucking protection racket where I have to pay amazon a yearly tithe #to guarantee my continued access to the items I literally purchased and own #me posting

if i finish the unnamable-50k-words-in-november challenge im gonna use that as an excuse to buy myself a new keyboard. as a reward. as a treat.
