I sent an email to the admissions dept for the school with the radiography program I'm interested in (despite it maybe not being feasible for me as the most competitive program in the state outside of MD programs) and they replied sooner than I expected to set up a call talking abt transcripts and I am so crazy nervous
#oughh bro i have to send over my lackluster transcripts with a whole lot of Ws and Cs and an F#and go like okay so i know it LOOKS bad but... hear me out.....#i know the worst that could happen is the guy tells me theres just no way im getting in without an associates first#which sucks because i already have a bachelors i dont wanna have to redo gen eds ffs#they only admit like 20 people into this program a year so i feel like i cant mess up talking to the transfer admissions guy#he might actually remember 😵‍💫 even if my embarrassing transcripts wont be memorable enough#like i did end with a 3.5 gpa but also i was in school for like 8 years and i did exceptionally bad#for a variety of reasons including but not limited to: family deaths. (toxic family stuff). poverty. coming out. twice.#my grades shot up once i was eligible financial aid finally and not paying out of pocket while working 1-2 jobs#it still looks terrible#idk how to have the confidence of the average cis white man who walks in with a 2.1 gpa to an interview for med school#personal stuff#im so nervous#like#if this maybe works out and things maybe go to plan i might have like. an actual career? that i enjoy? that feels fulfilling?#a career that can actually go places? so many modalities to choose from. i can help people. and i can go home at the end of my day#and make art and not think about whether what im making is furthering my career or not#also xrays and radiology are just. soooo cool. i love bones. and organs. i looove getting imaging done at my appts because then i get#to ask them questions about what theyre doing n how it works.#i wish id felt more confident when i was younger that maybe i could succeed in sciences

Update: BLS class & Microbiology
Hi tumblr!
I just wanted to hop on here and give an update. So, I haven't touched the BLS course material since Monday, and I didn't even get to do as much as I had wanted :( It's okay though! That class isn't until January 8th, today is December 6th, so I still have plenty of time to get that done and be ready for the in-person portion of getting my certification :) I'll do at least an hour today, like I planned. Also, since I want to be a sonographer, that means either going to sonography school right away, or doing rad tech and then furthering my education for sonography. Either way, these programs are COMPETITIVE! I was looking up if my GPA (2.6) would even have be eligible to apply, and it can be depending on the program. However, I was reading an advice post from those who do admissions into these programs, and she was basically saying that while that is the MINIMUM to apply, most years the LOWEST that gets accepted is a 3.5
I can get to a 3.6, but I'm gonna have to retake several classes and get A's in them T_T It's okay though! I'm happy my GPA isn't a total lost cause, and also I feel much more ready for college now than I did when I was a freshman. This also means I NEED to get this BLS, so I can get some work experience in this field because the post also said that some students had even lower GPA's (like maybe a 3.3) but they had other strong things about their application (other degrees, work experience, and A's in the important classes like math and science).
She said it's dependent on the program obviously, but work/volunteer experience, your interview (if they do interviews), and entrance exam scores can help strengthen your chances.
So I need to be:
Getting my BLS so I can get some work/volunteer experience
Retake classes to raise my GPA (As preferably to raise my GPA as much as I can) Since I'm paying out of pocket, and only get 3 tries at a class, if I feel burnt out, then I will take a break. I am not ruining my chances at getting into this field because I want to rush it. Good things take time.
Look into strengthening my interviewing skills
Look into what is tested on in the entrance exams, and work on studying for those too
1 and 2 are my main priority right now though, and I'm not anywhere near being able to get into a program T_T There aren't even any good ones near me. There's two at two community colleges, which I thought were better than for profit, but these community colleges aren't CAAHEP accredited either T_T They are both JRCERT. I've heard if your school isn't CAAHEP accredited, then you shouldn't even bother because you can't take your exams T_T I'm gonna look more into this
I've been trying to register to retake microbiology, because I failed it :( However, the system my school uses keeps saying it's full when it ALSO SAYS there are 2 spots available...I didn't know you can register with an add/drop form (lol) so I submitted one of those. It says it'll take 2-3 business days so...hopefully I get in T_T Wish me luck! Also, I can't believe how many departments and people I have emailed about this issue and NO ONE has gotten back to me! My school is honestly really lousy when it comes to getting back to you. I sent out like 3 emails asking for a counseling appointment. Nothing. I went in and she made me an appointment right then and there. There was no one else waiting to make an appointment...yet no one could get back to my email. My sister said she's had them HANG UP ON HER! She was in high school at the time and doing dual enrollment. Her high school counselor said he'd call them, and they ended up hanging up on him too...smh.
Anyway, enough rambling, I am gonna go and I will be back later with hopefully good news that I got my class! :D

did i ttell yyall bout that time i accidentally took a quantum physics class . u should hear it. it says more abt me than my mbti ever will
my first deadly yet obvious mistake was letting my cousin* help me put my schedule together. in my defense it was my first semester ever at uni and i was taking any and all help i could get. "ur doin premed u might as well take this chem class in case u need it for ur major later" he says. "ok" i say.
*this is the one notorious for building bombs in his kitchen sink. yes he was 2 semesters from getting his bachelors in chemical engineering b4 deciding it was boring and then swapping to computer science for funsies. why do you ask
so yeah the class is named some benign thing like "intro to chemistry principles" with a large footnote that its only required for a handful of STEM degrees, but it therefore covers any and every intro chem credit u will ever need. so im like awesomesauce. might as well since this uni is notorious for idiot credit transfer policies 👍
first week or two is also fairly benign. prof mentions the class is gonna b pretty intense due to the material itself being pretty intense, this isnt really an intro course so hopefully u took ap chem, and im like sure its a 4 credit class. i didnt take ap chem in high school bc our chem teacher Sucked (2/15 ap chem kids my year got a 3 and everyone else failed) so im a little nervous but prepared to hate myself the rest of the semester. pretty cool. chugging along. i dont actually have to teach myself as much basic chem as i thought bc most of its pretty intuitive but im waiting for the other shoe to drop
add/drop deadline passes. my schedule is now set in stone
everything was still fine for a bit. but as per The Rules, somewhere around the 2nd of 4 midterms stuff starts going off the rails and im like. bestie WHAT is happening.u want me modeling WHAT in this janky software from the 90s that responds if and only if it feels like it? wtf is a pi orbital? wtf is hilbert space??? (pause) ARE WE DOING QUANTUM MECHANICS in my INTRO TO CHEM CLASS
(also side note im taking 17 credit hours this semester. the other classes included calc 2 which sucks fat nuts despite the fact im taking it for the second time…its been like 2 years bc i took it in high school… and japanese 101 which ended up being worse than the ACCIDENTAL QUANTUM PHYSICS class in many ways)
so yeah i cried a lot. i got like a 60 on my final and scraped out with a B-. somehow even with Also A B- in my calc class my gpa didnt drop below my scholarship minimum of 3.5 until i failed illustration 101 later. and then i got really disabled. and then covid happened. and now ive been on academic probation for like . hang on doing math. 3 years. and also havent been able to get that resolved to take classes that entire time. and i need to go get that figured out so i can apply to another school UUUUUUGGGHHHHHHH f my gay baka life
tldr: stay in school to draw yuri on ur notes or jesus from bible will put u on academic probation for 3 years

Hey can I ask you something off topic?
I'm 19 and still in highschool but I feel like I missed out on life, y'know? Like, I see all my peers out there participating in community service, having jobs, going to clubs. There's a junior I know that has a 4.0 GPA while a senior like me is stuck with a 3.5. I didn't have a car or did any of my family members since I started HS so i wasn't and still isn't able to go to school clubs, get my driver license because I have nothing to practice on, etc.. I just feel like, why am I still trying? Everything in life depends on these key factors. Or do they? I am so lost. I'm almost graduating and it feels like I'm nothing? I don't even know what I'm doing and I'm very scared.
I feel comfortable talking to you because you seem very real? Lol and an adult 😭
I guess what I'm trying to ask is how are you?
Like, how did you do it?
Ofc you can ask, it's very sweet that you trust me and reached out!🖤🖤🖤
One thing I can say for certain, right off the bat, life absolutely DOES NOT depend on these factors. It may seem like it, partially because of society and partially bc everyone around you is talking about the future and driving cars and doing w/e, but there is no, one (much less right) way to experience high school, nor the life you live both in between and afterwards.
That being said, I'm not gonna lie and say there was nothing you missed out on, yes, high school could've been more exciting, but that same thing can be said about literally anything and everything, and this portion of your life is barely the tip of the iceberg. The real good news here is high school isn't supposed to be the best part of your life!!
(Imagine if it was, you'd feel equally as weird leaving it behind, just for different reasons. It's good to feel like you're ready to move beyond wherever it is you're stuck... that means you're maturing and ready for new things.)
Based on the things you've said, I'm also presuming that one of the reasons you might feel so lost is because, like you mention, you're not immersed in any big community like the ones you notice your classmates in, such as band, sports, clubs, etc. That's something I went through too, but is easy to remedy with time. It's very possible that this sense of distress is due to boredom as well as a lack of satisfaction (among the rest of it all, i don't want to downplay your feelings), which is why it might seem so difficult to imagine something else for yourself, even if that doesn't mean it's not out there for you to find.
There are many communities out there for you to explore, as well as hobbies to start, and it's not, and never is, too late to start doing what you see your friends doing. Even if it's not possible for you currently, there will always be clubs to join, jobs to get, community service to do, and even make more friends!!
(Some simple hobbies I enjoy are coloring books, word searches, crocheting, lanyards, diamond dots, journaling/scrapbooking... things I can do while watching TV, and etc! I can always go more into depth about this, too kasdjfkad)
It's not easy getting your butt out there to start these things, I admit, but it does end up snowballing once the process starts. Even if it's just something little, like asking to join your friends even if you just sit on the sidelines, picking up trash around your neighborhood, or applying to work somewhere close by with limited hours... you never know what's going to stick until you try it! And you're never obligated to stay if you hate it, either.
As for your GPA, don't give a shit about that. I know it's hard NOT to compare yourself to others (i struggle with that, too... my roommate is nearly two years younger than me and is graduating college in three years while i've been in school for FIVE), but a 3.5 is an AMAZING gpa to have! It's also not reflective of anything. I know it might seem like it is, but the second you gradutate, your high school grade concerns are going to be the LAST thing on your mind. Plus, if going to college soon is one of your plans, I can 100% assure you that more schools are going to accept you than you think (i barely graduated high school and got into almost every four year i applied to)!
It's hard to give you any other advice without truly knowing the situation you're in (what your long term goals are and how you plan on getting there, + what's legitimately and physically stopping you), and I don't want to make this conversation all about the things I did (really what's helped things improve for me is just taking time to be okay with going with the flow and getting on medication, lol) but you shouldn't feel like you're trying for no reason. It might be confusing, you might feel lost or even abnormal under the circumstances you see around you, but graduating high school is a weird transition period in life ANYWAY and feeling confused about where to go is normal (I can bet that junior with 4.0 is stressing so hard about their future, too. You're both working hard, just maybe for different things! You're honestly very brave to admit this, a lot of people keep these emotions to themselves and sometimes until it's too late to fix them).
You have so many options ahead of you. Even if you don't know what they are yet, or it takes a lot of patience to find them, this isn't the end of your happiness nor should you internalize it feeling that way. Whether your future consists of taking time off for yourself OR staying in school, working, traveling, volunteering, or etc., in any order and in any way you want, you deserve to be kind to yourself as you make the journey of figuring out what it is that you enjoy doing. You don't have to have all the answers right now, many of them will come with time, and even if they don't, that doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong nor need to compare yourself to others.
All in all, I hope this wasn't a waste of a read for you. Really I'm sending all my love and tons of luck your way...!! I know what it's like to feel like there's no conclusion to something that requires one, but just as I learned (and we all do, eventually) to be okay with proceeding to no end, you will too. And in a way that will bring you so much joy!🩵🩵🩵
Thank you so much for allowing me the opportunity to speak on these questions. I'll always be here if you need anything or have anymore questions, and I'm excited to hear about whatever you decide to do next, whenever that may be! It will come.

So I’m from the cold state of North Dakota meaning I got the great liberty to go to the public school system….. IT IS HORRIBLE..
School 1. This is the school that did nothing when my mom saw signs of adhd and autism. Apparently doing my homework, talking to my mom, watching SpongeBob, and playing with something is normal in their eyes. This is also the school that we had the most problems with, mostly the teachers. This was my 2nd grade teacher and my middle school gym teacher. My 2nd grade teacher decided that I had no diagnosis and I was nothing but a lazy whiny crybaby, not only did she tell tell this to my mom but she told ME this to MY FACE. I was about 7-6 years old…. Then there is my middle school gym teacher. He teased me over my name, next my classmates joined in, well we went to the guidance counselor asked me and my mom if it was ok if he could tease me but not my peers… boy mom was angry and that is how I left that school.
2. This school I started during 5th grade. And my class was tiny, during my first year there, there was only 10 of us. Well my peers decided that they didn’t like me because I didn’t grow up with them. This caused a lot of teasing and bullying. Well jokes on them! I remember one of my boy classmates getting into a fight in the bathroom and ended up hurting his head on the urinal!
3. This school was part of a small area being only 1,200 people and it was a big drug town. I grew up in this town for a long period being were my mom and my unofficial stepdad lived. But again a lot of teasing and they wouldn’t follow my 504 accommodations. And with my step dad being a angry drunk we had to move anyways.
After that we moved to the capital of North Dakota, Bismarck-Mandan. This allowed me to be close to my half sister and her family. So that moves on to…
4. This was a mixture of Mandan middle and century high. Again this was ANOTHER place that wouldn’t follow accommodations. This was also the start of Covid so I had to do online. Didn’t like it there due to no stimulation for my brain which caused me to fall asleep in class.
And lastly my first school in Colorado….
5. This school was a online school as I was just starting to go on Remicade. And this school was the best by far! When my mom found out about them not following my 504 and got angry the vice principal told her “I’m so sorry mam we’ll fix it please don’t sue us!”.. i am happy to have gone to the school and will always be grateful for them allowing me to be one of there first seniors to graduate with a 3.5 gpa and #3 of 23…
thank you D6 online academy for letting me be apart of your class of 2022. GO NAVIGATORS!…
I’ll post more about my time in North Dakota schools tomorrow… good night everyone and thank you for letting me rant…

Hi Dr. Matt, I too am a college youth coming to you for advice, well actually more like concept. What does GPA actually mean, in terms of my ability to get jobs/go to grad school/etc. I grew up in a very "4.0" or bust household and while I've broken free (god that first B was freeing) I have less than 0 ability to actually add context to these numbers. Help?
Hi, anon!
So let’s start from the top and be real broad for you and other folks who might be in different circumstances:
GPA = Grade Point Average. Each institution may calculate this differently. I occasionally have to do them by hand, but why the fuck would you do that is the better question here.
GPA is usually a number between 0.00 and 4.00. Students who fall below a certain GPA at college/univ level (for many institutions in the USA, 2.0 is that number, which is a C average) go on something called Academic Probation
The reason Academic Probation is a problem is because if you are on Academic Probation for multiple semesters, you may be ‘Disqualified,’ I.e. Kicked out of your college/univ.
So in this sense, GPA functions as a way of demonstrating to the University and the people giving you Financial Aid that you are making satisfactory progress on your degree, and you are ‘worthy’ of continuing to receive subsidized education.
While that’s a shitty way of conceiving of humans and education, that’s the system we live in, and that’s essentially why it’s really important for people to be aware of their GPA.
It’s not that that number defines you or your intrinsic worth as a human, rather its that that number gives you access to other things.
Now, on that note, let’s talk about GPA in terms of social value, economic value, and social and academic mobility. It’s going to be a long conversation, so I’m putting it under the cut.
-------------
Depending on your field of career and study, average GPAs are going to vary.
Engineers, for example, go through such difficult classes that they have notoriously low GPAs. Like anything from a 2.0 to a 3.0 is solid and anything higher than like a 3.3 is considered by many in Engineering fields to be really good.
Many STEM fields are like this. Chemistry, Kinesiology, Physics, Math, Engineering, Biology, Bio-Chem, etc.
In many Social Science and Humanities fields, GPAs are less important than research and analytical abilities, writing strength, communication abilities, teamwork stuff -- transferable, “soft” skills essentially.
That being said, when you are trying to move up, academically or economically, GPA may become a factor that you start to think about--especially when you are applying to a type of specialized or graduate school (certification programs, nursing programs, teaching certificate, Masters degrees, PhDs, etc).
Many programs have GPA limits on their programs in order to thin out their application pools. Nursing programs may have a 3.0 minimum. Masters programs may ask you to have only gotten X number of Bs or Cs.
I want to emphasize here, however: GPA minimums depend on the program itself.
Prestige is one of the main driving factors behind demanding a certain GPA. Places with prestigious programs and jobs have the notoriety that brings them loads of applicants, which in turn gives them the ability to raise standards.
The top 10 schools in the US are going to be able to demand a 3.5 GPA or higher for admission.
The top firms in a city can say that you need X amount of experience in X area to be hired onto their team.
-----------------
When it comes to applying to graduate school stuff (law school, Masters programs, PhD programs), I would focus less on whether or not you have a freakishly high GPA and more on your extracurriculars, your publications, research opportunities, writing abilities, analytical skills, and the hard skills necessary for your chosen field (I.e. Knowing MatLab or Python or GIS).
The reason for that is that you don’t really choose a graduate school so much as you choose a supervisor at a graduate school.
So if you can connect with a potential supervisor and are able to demonstrate to them that you A) are an asset to their program and B) have the skills necessary to do the work, then they are often the ones who decide whether or not you get admitted.
Supervisors can often smooth over lumps and bumps when it comes to admission of graduate students because THEY will be the ones overseeing your work before the Univ/program is.
Example: When I applied to one of my schools, the potential supervisor I was working with coached me in how to structure my research statement. They also advocated for me in admissions, and I did, in fact, get into that school (even if I chose not to go). For my other choice, I worked with a different supervisor who helped me get funding to help me secure admission as well.
So in this way, it is far more important for you to impress a supervisor than to have the best GPA of all applicants.
--------------
Now for the rest of y’all who aren’t thinking about grad school or a certification program, you may be asking, “Will my GPA affect my ability to get a job in the future?”
And first off, I want to sort of break down the notion that your degree = your career. Only something like 30% of people end up working in the field they get their degree in, so that tells you already that GPA and choice of Major kind of doesn’t matter in terms of being able to make money.
But more to the point:
Generally speaking, most (like, 95% or something) jobs do NOT require you to list your GPA on your resume or any other application materials.
Some positions may ask you to demonstrate proficiency in a given area or hard skill. Some positions may ask you to provide proof that you completed your degree. But usually, this proof is given to a company AFTER you have applied and accepted an offer for the position.
Example: after I accepted my job, I was asked to submit proof of my Masters degree, because my offer was contingent on me having the credentials I said that I did.
Now, if you are fresh out of school and don’t have much experience, but you’ve got a bangin’ GPA, that may be something that you consider listing on your resume to demonstrate to employers that you are a smart cookie, simply lacking experience.
If you are a new graduate in a STEM field specifically, and you have a bangin’ GPA and are looking for work in STEM, then you may also list that on your resume.
But I want to emphasize that you don’t have to. It is your choice. And in this scenario, you would only do that if you were applying to a highly specific position where that mattered and if you felt that it would help you.
If you’re applying to anything that is not an internship or a STEM entry job (like a new engineer, a new lab assistant, etc) there is no reason for you to put your GPA on your resume. That should not affect your chances for a position.
------------
That’s probably plenty of food for thought for now. But anon, you can breathe. I got your other message and you are doing fantastically. Try to understand that the number isn’t as important as your competence and understanding in the material you are learning.
For right now, focus on building the skills. When it comes down to it, people would rather have a doctor who understands what to do to save their life than a doc who got a 4.0 in undergrad.

FE3H College/University AU: Blue Lions Part 2
Here's part one
I definitely should be doing my college work
Sylvain
Sylvix vibes here we go.
Sylvain manages to keep a GPA of 3.2-3.5. Surprisingly enough, Sylvain is NOT dumb in school! While he does some "skirtchasing," he does it to keep people's attention away from Felix. While he crushes super hard on Felix, he doesn't want Felix to be overwhelmed with people coming at him should the majority of people find out. Felix absolutely hates socializing, and he respects that.
Joined the baseball team due to the sole fact that Felix simply asked him to join a club with him. He found out afterwards what the club is, but did not hesitate to join it with him if it meant being with Felix more. Sylvain's a pretty decent player, but nowhere near as good as Felix or Dimitri. He often times finds himself staring at Felix's ass if he's crouching during practice.
He helps Felix prepare for debates often, which is how Felix helps Dimitri win debates. He even goes and watches the debates just to see how the arguments play out.
Hilda is his gay best girl friend; she makes a terrible wingman, but he's Hilda's wingman for Marianne (or Edelgard depending on your ship).
Likes smoking weed with Hilda and Claude. He tries cigarettes, but found them nasty. Drinks socially, and prefers whisky and wine. He's gotten Felix to smoke weed with them. Occasionally the four of them smoke together and snack on Taco Bell at 3AM.
This dude most days is late to class. The only day he's not late for class is when Felix drags his ass to class that morning. Most people just understand that Felix and Sylvain are best friends and Sylvain needs someone to get him out of bed.
Definitely asks Felix to homecoming as "bachelors," but people slowly catch on to Sylvain's shenanigans. Oh, Felix pushes him over calling him a "fucking idiot" and decides to go.
Sometimes braids Felix's hair and keeps extra hair ties on him in case Felix breaks or loses a hair tie. Also happens to keep bobby pins on him.
Bonds with Felix's cat and the cat only likes Felix and Sylvain. Sometimes Felix will fall asleep in his dorm and he just sits there and thinks about how much Felix is like the grumpiest cat in the world. Also thinks about his sweet side being like his cat.
He gets drunk on New Years Eve with Felix and ends up kissing him. That makes Felix realize he's absolutely fucking gay and Sylvain becomes the biggest mess of a man the following day; not only by having a massive hangover, but by also remembering he and Felix kissed.
Highly favors Mercedes's baked edibles.
Dedue
Maintains a GPA of 3.5-3.7; this man is very good at learning and learns hella fast. Typically does a minimal amount of studying; rumor has it that he's got photographic memory.
Lives with Dimitri at his home and has given the excuse that he and Dimitri are cousins. In reality, they just call each other adopted brothers to one another.
Studies with Dimitri sometimes, and is great with animals. When he can, he takes care of Dimitri's dogs needs (cleaning, bathing, feeding, etc.) while Dimitri is at a game or at a debate meet.
He's probably apart of the basketball team, honestly. He's got the height for it like have you sEEN hIs heIGHT?
Is apart of the horticulture club for sure. Ashe is also apart of the horticulture club and that's how they get to learn that they both love plants. Dedue appreciates the more colorful flowers and vegetables. When the club does fundraisers, he bakes most of the baked goods to sell and it's always a hit.
When the Blue Lions get together, he sometimes will bake edibles for the group.
Probably works part-time in the library after talking with Ashe, hearing how much he likes to read.
Is very good with animals but he will never tell you that. He prefers his animal-handling stay with taking care of Dimitri’s dog.
Most people are intimidated by him and find it nerve-wracking when they have to work with him. Ashe and Dimitri both have seen him be a giant teddy bear, though. He just wants his damn flowers and to cook or bake for people.
Has an apron that Dimitri custom ordered for him that says “Kiss ‘De-Chef’.” Dedue questioned Dimitri when it was gifted to him. He thought that if he wore it when cooking with Ashe that maybe it would give him a hint that he likes him.
He probably writes amazing poetry, let be honest. You can’t just not love flowers, cooking, baking, be a gentle giant, and not be expected to write in some way.

College Advice
My brother was like, hey if you have any tips… So i wrote this! And then thought, there’s lots of people on tumblr just now going to college too…
Theres nothing in here about covid or making sure you have enough money– because i dont know anything about being a student during covid and i wouldnt give the same advice for getting money to everyone (and i wouldnt always know how anyway). I assume in the advice that the reader has enough money, because my brother does. That makes a big difference! Someone struggling for money wont have the bandwidth or time, probably, to do a lot of the stuff i advise. Edit: ugh i forgot, this is about US schools, specifically liberal arts US schools. Sorry about that!
Also, I didnt feel right taking the affection out of it once i decided to share it publicly. Help yourself! I may not have as direct an interest in your life, but there’s nothing in there i wouldnt wish for anyone going to college right now. (there’s also quite a bit that I think applies to anyone regardless of whether they do college or not).
Hi ******!
College Advice:
Work: No matter how important your work is or how much you have, take at least one day off a week. No schoolwork or working for money or any kind of work at all that day! (if it works better for you to take a half-day here and there instead of the whole day, that will do). More than one day is preferable, but there may come times when you have So Much To DO that sacrificing your free time doesn’t seem so bad and even one day off feels like too much.
I’m sure you’ve had plenty of this already, but people will keep telling you (by things they say and don’t say) that what you accomplish is the most important thing. It is not. What is most important is up to you– but I think it’s being your own authentic self. That’s complicated of course, but it boils down to: you already have everything you need in yourself, and keeping in touch with what you really truly want and love comes before everything.
If you flunk out of school and all your nightmares come true and you still remember who you are, I will consider you to have succeeded. (but if you do forget– and so many things conspire to make you forget!– I will still be proud of you).
GPA: It’s not the same as it was in high school! I won’t get into specific numbers because different schools have different ways of calculating it, and different rates of gpa inflation etc. It’s mostly bullshit. Unfortunately, if you want to go to graduate school, it is bullshit you have to pay attention to, but even then it’s not as all-important as it was in high school. You don’t need a 4.0, not even to become a doctor or a lawyer. A 3.5 or 3.6 is plenty for the highest ambitions, especially given that you’ll be doing extracurriculars.
I would advise keeping half an eye on the numbers, and not straining yourself for even one additional 0.1 above your target, whatever you decide that is. If you decide not to do graduate school, you honestly could get any GPA as long as you don’t end up on academic probation (which i think goes on your permanent record? Or maybe not. I was on academic probation my last semester of senior year and i’m still not clear on whether it’s on the transcript somehow). After college, people only care that you have your bachelor’s, not what your grades were while you got it. They mostly won’t even care what the bachelor’s is in! It’s very strange, after all the work you’ve put in! (many of them only care that you had the money to go to school, very disappointing)
Extracurriculars: I did a lot of different ones, and still don’t feel entirely qualified to advise about them, because I hated most of them. My mistake was doing things I thought I should do instead of what I wanted to do. I think you should do what you want, even if there’s no existing group for the thing you want to do, for a few reasons. 1. You should enjoy yourself! Having fun is a very serious matter! Keeping the joy of living alive in your heart will make living feel worthwhile, of course, but it will also give you courage and the power to stick by your principles and keep pursuing your goals. 2. It doesn’t actually matter to graduate schools WHAT you did for extracurriculars; what they’re looking for is evidence for what kind of person you are, and they judge that that’s shown through HOW you do your extracurriculars (with commitment and integrity etc) rather than which ones you do. (even so, don’t let the “commitment” part keep you stuck in a soul-sucking activity!)
Choices: You’ll be told you’re supposed to choose your major on a certain timeline, do this and that and everything to very specific deadlines, all very proper. Of course, the more deadlines you meet, the easier things are. But on the other hand– human beings are not machines. You’re allowed to change your mind! Even after you were supposed to be sure! It’s much better to listen to your own misgivings and really look at them to figure out what you want as soon as you know they’re there rather than pushing them down in a panic because you’re not supposed to have them. If they’re ignored, they won’t go away, and they’ll eat at you, and one day they’ll ruin things. (this may be what midlife crises are made of).
Friends: I know you have an established way of having friends, very different from mine, and that’s a good thing! I also know a lot of people take going to college as an opportunity to finally allow themselves certain things. There’s all kinds of takes on this, from putting on a poorly-done accent to binge drinking to coming out. It’s much better to stretch your legs this way than otherwise, I think. We need all the autonomy we can get!
My advice here is: trust yourself. Listen to even your very quiet instincts. They’re there for a reason. You may elect to ignore them, but consider them first, and reject them afterwards if you must. The extreme end of this is Having A Bad Feeling. Listening to that has saved me from some sticky situations! A more mild form is the weird feeling of dissonance between you and an old friend. There are many reasons you may feel that, but unfortunately, in college, one of the most common reasons is that you’re becoming different people who aren’t so suited to being friends as your high school selves were. It’s painful! At the same time, it’s okay to love someone and not be together forever– but I suspect you already know that!
The one thing I would absolutely forbid is isolating yourself. It may seem impossible from where you are now, but that’s what I thought at the beginning too. College is a weird place, not exactly school and not exactly work and not exactly home, and it’s too easy to slip into anonymity. Tell your friends how you feel, good or bad! If you feel like you’re imposing on them, impose!! If they love you, they will prefer inconvenience over learning later that you were in pain and said nothing.
How to Learn: It’s true what they say, that teaching is the best way to learn. Your peers may not always welcome this– I was rather disliked in study groups for always explaining the answer, before I reined it in a bit (things were still awkward unfortunately! possibly for other reasons lol). Of course, other people’s jealousy isn’t your responsibility, and you may sow discord with your brilliance with my full blessing. If you’d rather not do that, my advice would be to become a tutor and/or TA in the subject(s) most important to you at your earliest convenience/whenever they allow you to. It really does make you an expert!
Humanities: They’re going to make you read a lot. Excessively, some might say! You’ll learn which readings are actually necessary to pore over, which ones you may skim, and which ones you may skip altogether. Please don’t feel guilty for not always doing all the reading! Almost no one does all of them. I didn’t even do all of them, and I was a stickler for Doing It Right.
Papers: my tricks are the Purdue OWL website (for brushing up on grammar, looking up how to do those goddamn finicky citation styles, seeing examples of finished papers in those styles), outlining, and rest time. Leaving time between drafts of a paper helps a lot! (that being said, I will be very surprised if you make it all the way through college without turning in at least a few first drafts. It’s not the end of the world, and if you’ve got a knack for it, the professors may not even know the difference! Very amusing). Reading through what you’ve written out loud also helps, however silly it may feel. It has to do with how your brain processes information, and hearing what you’ve written is different enough from seeing it that you’ll be more sensitive to errors and weirdnesses.
STEM subjects: For these ones, it’s more important to do all the homework, because they may only give you one problem per concept. Be very literal about how you interpret things, that’s how folks in STEM usually expect you to think. Office hours are gold, if you can get them (and if the professor isn’t an ass). TAs are hit or miss. Readings are usually super important, relatively short, and can be read multiple times for more benefit.
General knowledge: Don’t forget to think critically! You’d think that’s all you’ll be doing, but in fact most professors only want you to regurgitate their own thoughts back to them. Very disappointing. However, that doesn’t have to stop you! You can always think: “Who benefits from this? What voices aren’t I hearing from in this story?” (even in STEM there are stories). “Why is this important?” In general, don’t stop asking questions! This is where I think true intelligence lies.
I’m sure you don’t need ALL of this advice– please don’t think I don’t think you know what you’re doing! I’m being a little over-cautious not because I don’t trust you but because if there’s any chance of my mistakes and accidental successes helping you do better than otherwise, I want to give all of them that opportunity. Kind of a shotgun approach!
All my love,
Autumn!

So it begins
This is a journal, diary, a void just somewhere i can put my thoughts without feeling like i’m just screaming into a void.
5/28/2020
I’m living in the u.s. my dad is German and my mum is American, while we live in the u.s. they’re laid back parents and have let me drink in the house on weekends since i was 15 or 16.(note: i got held back in first grade after moving from england so despite being born in 02 i graduate in 21) Being 17 i wanted to experiment, I've vaped but personally i don’t see the attraction so i tried weed as it’s starting to become legal. I figured i’m nearly an adult so what’s the big deal. Like an afternoon drink i enjoyed smoking. It helped me relax and be more open about myself and put on this picture perfect filter even if i was just talking to friends. And unlike nicotine i never craved it or felt like i needed it which is why i don’t fuck with nicotine. So life moves on like normal until October. they found some trash from a cart i opened, unfortunately my siblings have ruined weed for my parents as all my siblings who smoke decided to make some dumb life decisions (which i don’t want to type out) and are in my parents eyes not in the best position. Rightfully from their experience they’re against it, it’s not unreasonable to see the cause and effect relationship. lots of yelling and arguing ensue i don’t remember it too well but i didn’t get punished somehow. Fast forward to December My parents are worried for my grades, this year i was spending half my time at a technical school and my other half at my main high school. Perfect grades in technical school but my main school wasn’t the best. I had flat C’s with a b+ in English. In my eyes i had bitten off more than i could chew this year as i decided to take college algebra/trigonometry a class covering two years of college math in one, i suck at linguistics so Spanish class was rough, Chemistry is known for being tough, English always came easily to me but that class takes up a lot of time. So in my eyes my grades could be improved but to an extent it was justified and for the past two years i was on the high honor roll maintaining a 3.5+ gpa so it’s not the end of the world. To them they think that weed is what’s making my grades the way they are that i’m a stoner who just smokes pot all day and that’s all i want to do with my life. This makes me horribly angry for two reasons. The first being i - hate - potheads, ironic but if all you want to do is smoke with your life frankly i think you’re a boring person with no aspirations in life which isn’t what i want for myself i feel unbalanced and shitty if i’m not sober for a few days i would maybe smoke 2-3 times a week at night after i was done with my day or on the weekend with friends. So that’s the first thing that upsets me they think i’m a pothead who just wants to smoke weed all day. the second reason this makes me angry is that they’re completely fine with getting drunk, now i’m not calling my parents alcoholics (my dad doesn’t even drink that much it’s mainly my mum ) but shit at least once or twice a week my mum will be pretty fuckin drunk. which again is an okay thing to do they’re adults it’s their right my problem is that if the world is starting to put weed on the level of alcohol why is it so horrible if i get high occasionally to put off some stress like she does occasionally. Now i didn’t get to ask her this specific question but i did say “so it’s okay for you to get drunk but i can’t get high” to which she responded “i’m an adult, you’re not” if you trusted me to be adult enough to handle alcohol what makes me smoking any different. second semester we have 2 more “big” arguments about my grades, they keep relating it to pot. So at this point i had to 3rd person myself if you will. on one hand i didn’t believe pot to be affecting me as i thought i had control over it and never abused it, i knew what abuse looked like because of my siblings but never felt that way for myself. On the other maybe it is effecting me but i don’t realize it. So to humor the idea i go sober for a month, nah school is just hard it’s not weed. Idk if i typed this already but i understand if you don’t want to smell weed, or have it in your home but i don’t see the harm if i’m not bringing it anywhere near home. At around this point we entered quarantine, i didn’t mind online school however now my mum was hounding me constantly about school, if even one assignment was missing it would lead to more arguing. Now i know to a certain degree i didn’t give a fuck about the online work because at this point my grades weren’t going to be able to go down however i did 80% of my work. If i can’t understand trig in school what makes you think i can teach myself so for the most part i did school. At a certain point i felt this switch was flipped and it happened right around when quarantine started and since then i haven’t felt comfortable in my own home. it constantly feels tense between me and my mum i couldn't tell you what we argue over but i can’t even go hang out with friends without feeling like i’m doing something wrong, which makes me want to stay in my room all day which then makes them upset because they dont see me throughout the day which then leads to an argument and me storming back up to my room. so now that i’m in this cycle of shit frankly i just want to cry and enjoy my last summer but now i’m being threatened with being kicked out despite not even finishing highschool. i turn 18 in 9 days i don’t think i’ve ever been scared for a birthday. when i’m not crying and feel more level headed i do think about actually moving out though.
I mean if i broke it down what’s so horrible about only making 25k a year you can easily live in your own apartment with insurance and enough to save for the future and emergency, I've done the math and it just keeps cycling in my head because all my life I've been taught i need to go to college or make more than 60k a year but after doing the math, why. why put myself in debt if i can live comfortably, i mean shit any job paying something like $15 an hour (in the midwest) isn’t going to be anything to be proud of but if i can sustain myself and grow a retirement fund why not if i meet my partner they most likely have the means to sustain themselves so it would be easy to live together and currently i’d rather be sterilized then have a kid so that’s not an expense i want to think about as it’s something i do not want.
I want to finish highschool but living in my parents house makes me feel constantly on edge. In retrospect after writing this and reliving the past school year if i didn’t or if they didn’t know i smoked pot most of this would have never happened.
also i need a fucking job again at least it will get me out of the house
i’m posting this for my own sanity if you think i’m a dumbass tell me off in the comments if you have similar experiences, advice, encouragment etc feel free to put it in comments i appreciate feedback but frankly couldn’t care if you think i wasted my time in posting this

Happy New Me.
This post is real. It’s my life and everything that 2019 was. It’s not over yet but it’s already been a crazy year and I wanted to share. There are names of people from my life in here. I love everyone all my friends, I’m so lucky.
Usually when I write these posts I write them on New Years Eve. It’s a reflection of the year and what I’ve learned and where I’m at in life. Well this year, I started writing my reflection mid-July. Maybe by the time you read all of this you’ll understand, that when something happens the only way to remember it correctly is to write about it as you’re going through it, and that’s what I’m doing this year.
Remembering things correctly....
I remember that the start of the year was good. I went to Florida in February and got to get away from the cold Midwest winter for a week. Even planned a trip to Mexico in March or April for September, it looked to be a great year!
May 31st is a day to remember. I had gotten a phone call that had resulted in pure heartbreak. Roughly 3.5 years of my life had been, lessons learned but nothing short of wasted. Many missed opportunities had flown by because I put myself on hold for him. It was the worst feelings and the overall agony of having to deal with the aftermath. It was also the most freeing day of my life, I no longer had to pretend to be someone I wasn’t for people who probably never really cared that much anyways. It also amazes me the amount of information you find out when it’s all said and done. Being lied to for so long really hurts, the whole thing really hurt. As Taylor Swift once said “I’m not your princess, this ain’t a fairytale, Im gonna find someone someday who might actually treat me well” You know I won’t go into anymore detail, because it’s not worth it anymore, but it never really was, huh? But enough of that.
June was another rough month, we lost our dog Marley to a tumor. Marley was the best dog anybody could’ve asked for. She cuddled, gave hugs, made us laugh, and she was the selfie queen. She was my best friend! Losing her was another blow to the heart. Although we lost Mar, we gained Mag. Mag has some of the same characteristics as Marley and she fills the void. ❤️
June, July, and August were months of finding myself again, and reconnecting with old friends. I had connected with people I haven’t talked to since sophomore/junior year of high school.
I finally did some fun summer things, went on a wave runner, stayed out till 3am multiple times, went to six flags, maybe even had a little too much to drink once or twice.
In June I got 3 tattoos. I got the Chicago skyline on my forearm because Chicago is my favorite city, I love the lake, the parks, the excitement! I got a lotus flower with the quote “life is tough my darling, but so are you” as the stem on my collarbone because well life is tough and sometimes you gotta show it whose boss. And I got the sun and the moon on my back because well to be honest I thought it looked cool. In July I made the decision to move away from Lowell. I wanted to move to Indianapolis, so that’s what I did. Summer ‘19 was one for the books the summer I truly figured myself out!
August was great too specifically because Lover came out and Taylor Swift ALWAYS knows how to help. Who knew that “Death by a Thousand Cuts” would describe my broken relationship perfectly. Who knew that even though I wasn’t in love anymore “Lover” would still give me hope that someday I’ll find a man, and I want to have a love as strong as the one described in “Lover” who knew that “cruel summer” would be so relatable, I mean “I don’t wanna keep secrets just to keep you” and “I scream, for whatever it’s worth, I love you, ain’t that the worst thing you ever heard?” I absolutely love, lover, and Taylor’s music ALWAYS helps, during happy and sad times.
Thanks to Frankie and Jordyn for being there as soon as my heart broke, you’re both really great friends and I appreciate everything you did for me! Now that I’m all better we all have to go to Chicago again just for old times sake, plus I’m well rested now, unlike last time.
Then Nick for being such a great reconnection!. No matter how long we don’t talk for, we always come back, now that we’re older it’s better I think. We’ve had some really great times, I didn’t want the summer to end! I’m glad that we still live pretty close to each other so we can still hang out sometimes!
Remember those reconnections I mentioned? Kyleigh, Sarah, Cameron, and Jordan I even made a new friends Meghann and Omar! Thanks for being great friends all summer!! Y’all helped me more than you’ll ever know and I appreciate all of you!
Now it’s September, summer is ending, but the fun continued. I got another tattoo three hearts for my sisters and I. I saw the JONAS BROTHERS for the first time in 6 years which was seriously so amazing!!! I forgot how much fun it is screaming SOS and burning up with them! I officially moved to Indianapolis in September, and instead of going to Mexico like I mentioned earlier, I left for California for 10 days. I got to meet my west coast family for the first time, and that was sooooo much fun! We had a great time getting to know each other and piecing things together family wise! We also had fun exploring San Francisco! I already can’t wait to go back there. Jenna thanks for having us! And Kyleigh thanks for going with and hanging out! I also got a tattoo while I was in California too. It’s an airplane with the quote “I’ve got the world to go” y’all I LOVE traveling. The jet lag killed me for a long time after we got back 😭
October is here and I feel okay. I’m full blown living in Indy now. I have an interview for a second job, I also applied for an internship in California so we’ll see what happens. I might be in Canada for new year’s so that extremely exciting! I passed both my A term classes with “A’s” so my GPA got a boost and my confidence did cause I had so much going on during a term yet I still pulled off good grades!
November is next and I will keep you updated.

Student Loans Cuts
I love it when ford nation made cuts to osap , I was one of the lucky students effected by these osap cuts and let me tell you how much i’ve been effected , So I typically get about fourteen hundred but this year I am only receiving six thousand where as my little sister is getting fourteen hundred.  We both live on opposite ends of the province and about 7-9 hours away from home , With these cuts I now have to budget wisely and try to pay off bills from this summer and on top of that find a job .  I live off campus and my rent is close to $500 , Now I have to pay almost $600 for textbooks . And if I want to go to university next fall I have to maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher to get into the program I want.
I know Ford doesn’t understand how much these cuts effect us students but coming from a family where the only parent who works is my mother and she has to work really hard to pay rent for a place that charges her more for working they won’t be able to help me in the school year. ( I didn’t expect my parents to anyways).  My goal is to go to university for acting but minor in sociology ( or major in sociology and minor in theatre we ain’t sure yet) As a twenty one year old student and having anxiety and panic attack disorder it has already been hard trying to manage school and trying to survive life on my own.
Ford Nation I know you think what you did to OSAP will be beneficial to us students but it  effects us more then you ever will understand. All my life I had to work twice as hard to get to where I am today and with your cuts to funding you are limiting the potential of students and future students , You are limiting our ability to learn.  You are also making it harder for us to achieve great things from limiting our opportunities .
So as a student who was effected by both the strike in 2017 and the osap cuts I thank you for making  education hard for students like me  everywhere.

Classroom integration wasn’t an entirely positive development for black educational prospects. That argument, completely out of vogue, needs airing amid our reacquaintance with the busing controversy of 50 years ago. When Senator Kamala Harris exposed Vice President Joe Biden’s opposition to federally mandated busing in the early 1970s, progressives congratulated her—and that’s understandable. Busing fostered the integration that many districts resisted even after the Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education rejected the “separate but equal” doctrine, which had condemned so many black kids to substandard schooling. Thorough studies have confirmed that busing improved the scholarly performance of countless black kids.
Certainly, the underfunded one-room schoolhouses in the old South had to go. Something else that has to go too, though: the idea that any black student is only being properly served if white kids are studying next to him. That misimpression, fostered by the school-integration movement, has yielded a disturbing by-product: a harmful psychological association between scholastic achievement and whiteness.
Many on the left dismiss as a racist fable the notion that black teens often say their nerdy peers are “acting white,” bristling to even read it mentioned in pieces like this, claiming the whole scenario has been refuted. Deniers even lit into President Barack Obama for his famous line about the black kid with a book in his hand being called “white.”
In fact, this charge grew out of the integration era, as Stuart Buck documents in Acting White: The Ironic Legacy of Desegregation.
Over time, open white resistance to black kids in these schools receded as attitudes on race changed. However, a cultural meme casting school as “white” had set in and has become self-perpetuating since. The “acting white” charge can thrive even in extravagantly funded schools where nonwhite teachers are as exquisitely sensitized about racism as humans can be, quite unlike the nasty, dismissive teachers that black kids encountered decades ago.
It may seem counterintuitive that the “acting white” meme would persist beyond what caused it. But this is how cultural memes can work. A useful analogy would be the wariness some black people retain even today of hospitals, a legacy of the Tuskegee experiment, during which researchers left black men’s syphilis untreated. A meme can be especially tenacious when it is useful for other purposes. Teens of all stripes seek ways of defining their subgroup, fostering a sense of group membership, and even of acting out. In black-teen culture, one way of doing this is to embrace the idea that studying is “white.”
More useful is a rarely addressed study by Clifton Casteel from 1997, in which white eighth and ninth graders tended to say they did homework for their parents, while black kids said they did homework for their teachers. That is, they had a quiet sense that school was not for what “we” are at heart. Or, Harvard’s Roland Fryer has shown that while the number of white kids who report another white kid as a friend increases with that kid’s GPA, the number of black kids who report another black kid as a friend increases with GPA at a much lower rate, and then plummets after 3.5. Fryer even notes that it is specifically black kids who give evidence of putting in special effort who have fewer friends, not the ones who manage to excel while making it look easy.
Add to this body of research the decades of journalism on how black kids are tormented as “white” for liking school, up to the present day. John Ogbu wrote a book carefully documenting the association in Shaker Heights, Ohio. After I wrote a book in 2000 with a chapter addressing it, I received—unsolicited—well over 100 letters from black people explicitly attesting that they were teased as “white” for liking school, many saying that their grades went down as a result, as well as from concerned teachers wondering what to do about black kids telling them that this charge was being lobbed at them. One letter-writer said black kids called him a “nerd” in the early 1960s because he liked school, but that they called his younger siblings “white” for the same reason by the end of that decade.
Data are piling up on what makes for a good school, and racial diversity is not the best, let alone the only, answer. Reading should be taught via phonics, not “exploration.” Teach for America has gathered data revealing just what makes for a good teacher, even to poor students, including careful attention to the abilities of each student, fostering parental involvement, and the “I do, we do, you do” method of imparting skills (first via demonstration, next involving the whole class, then assigning each student to do it alone). Education must focus less on sociopolitical ideology and more on the nuts and bolts of schoolteaching, such as creating a curriculum and maintaining order. Teachers’ unions should be more open to longer school days. The idea of school ending for the summer so that kids can help their parents with the harvest must be rethought, of course, which also underscores the importance that schools always be air-conditioned.
President Obama condemned “the slander that says that a black youth with a book is acting white.” But that slander didn’t exist in the old days and need not exist today. We just have to get past an unintended variant kind of slander—assuming that a black youth has a book because he goes to school with whites. Desegregation forever, indeed—but let’s not forget that lots of learning can go on in all-black schools as well.

Hi!! I’m a undergrad psych, sociology and women’s and gender studies student in New Brunswick Canada. I hope to eventually go to grad school. I want to eventually be a clinical psychologist. I hope to work with trans* youth, and deal with eating disorders specifically as well as other issues. In your professional opinion, what’s the best way/how do I specialize in that regard. Thanks!!
Bonjour, Je viens aussi du Nouveau-Brunswick! If you go to a certain small liberal arts university in southern New Brunswick that’s known for having a lot of Rhodes Scholars, located in a small English-speaking town on the edge of a swamp, then we probably went to the same school. In terms of becoming a clinical psychologist, there are a couple of things that you can be doing now to try to make that dream a reality:
As an undergrad, it’s critical that you focus on your grades. Specialization isn’t something you really need to worry about until you reach graduate school; for now, you just need to worry about keeping your GPA as high as possible. Graduate programs in clinical psychology are highly competitive - you typically need a 3.3 just to apply, but to have a realistic chance of getting in, you need at least a 3.5, and ideally more like a 3.7 - 3.8.
If your school offers an undergraduate honours program, take it. (If you go to the school I’m thinking of, I know they definitely have an honours program, at least they did in 2012). If you have the opportunity to do an undergraduate thesis or honours thesis, you’ll also want to do that - a lot of graduate school programs require that you have an honours degree, and an undergraduate thesis gives you a nice polished piece of academic writing that you can submit as a writing sample for your applications.
Get research experience. Ideally, you should be volunteering or interning in a psychology research lab, but if you aren’t able to get a position like that, any research experience will do. Research in your chosen field would be a bonus, but it’s not necessary. Volunteer to do research in a related field - biology, zoology, sociology, anthropology, anything. I had a computer science research internship, and I still have that on my academic CV. Graduate school, even for clinical psychology, is mainly focused on research, and it’s really important to prove to potential supervisors that you are experienced and capable of performing high-calibre research with minimal supervision.
Give yourself lots of time to prepare for the GRE. For most programs now, you’ll need to do both the general GRE and the psych-specific GRE. These are tests that you shouldn’t wing the night before - invest in some practice tests and give yourself a couple of months to prepare. I wrote mine at the end of August, so I had the full summer to do vocabulary flashcards and practice the math. Some schools place huge emphasis on GRE scores, and low scores can get your application thrown out, even if it was otherwise promising.
Do some research about potential schools you’d like to go to and potential careers. You have the option to do a PhD or a PsyD - the PsyD involves less research than a PhD, but it typically won’t allow you to teach classes at a university or work in anything but clinical practice, so think carefully about what your career goals are. You might also consider going to medical school and becoming a psychiatrist - they can prescribe medication, which is really helpful if you want to work with trans* people - or you could also consider a MSW program.
Start researching potential graduate supervisors at least six months before you apply for grad school. When you apply to a PhD, you are applying to work with a specific professor at that school, and they should be a match for your research interests. This is where you specialize - look for professors who specialize in trans* issues or eating disorders, or both. I recommend that you not restrict yourself to Canadian schools - Canada does not have that many available PhD programs, and you’ll give yourself a lot more options if you also consider graduate programs down here in the USA. A lot of American PhD programs guarantee full funding for all students, including international students, so cost is usually not an issue. In general, you should be looking to apply to at least 10 schools.
Consider trying to get some volunteer or practical experience. Again, in your field would be ideal, but it’s not necessary. Suicide hotlines, YMCAs, community programs for inner city kids, homeless shelters, women’s shelters, advocacy groups and hospitals are all excellent places to start getting some experience in mental health - this is good for your resume, and it also helps you confirm for yourself that hands-on mental health work is what you really want to do. I actually took two years off after my undergraduate degree to work full-time in mental health, and I’m really glad that I did.
In general, though, the best advice I can give you is to not give up. This is a tough career path, and the road isn’t always going to be smooth. You might have major setbacks along the way - a bad GRE score, a lower GPA than you wanted, problems finding research experience, rejection from programs, etc. It’s important to dust yourself off and keep going. If your undergrad GPA isn’t up to snuff, try getting a master’s degree in something and trying again. If you get rejected, apply next year. Don’t let the odds freak you out. There is no deadline for achieiving this dream, and if it takes you several years and several tries before you get there, that’s okay. Best of luck to you!
