Another perfect example of how masking to help prevent covid keeps us *all* safer from *all* airborne illness.
by Tamara Schneider
Lingering respiratory viruses set the stage for chronic lung disease, mouse study shows
Doctors have long known that children who become seriously ill with certain respiratory viruses such as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are at elevated risk of developing asthma later in life. What they haven’t known is why.
A new study by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis may have solved the mystery. The study, in mice, shows that respiratory viruses can hide out in immune cells in the lungs long after the initial symptoms of an infection have resolved, creating a persistently inflammatory environment that promotes the development of lung disease. Further, they showed that eliminating the infected cells reduces signs of chronic lung damage before they progress to a full-blown chronic respiratory illness.
The findings, published Oct. 2 in Nature Microbiology, point to a potential new approach to preventing asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other chronic lung diseases by eradicating the persistent respiratory viruses that fuel these conditions.
“Right now, children who have been hospitalized for a respiratory infection such as RSV are sent home once their symptoms resolve,” said senior author Carolina B. López, PhD, a professor of molecular microbiology and a BJC Investigator at WashU Medicine. “To reduce the risk that these children will go on to develop asthma, maybe in the future we will be able to check if all of the virus is truly gone from the lung, and eliminate all lingering virus, before we send them home.”
About 27 million people in the U.S. are living with asthma. Many factors influence a person’s likelihood of developing the chronic breathing illness, including living in a neighborhood with poor air quality, having exposure to cigarette smoke and being hospitalized for viral pneumonia or bronchitis while young. Some researchers — López included — suspected that the link between serious lung infection and subsequent asthma diagnosis was due to lingering virus in the lungs that causes ongoing damage, but a direct link between the ongoing presence of virus and chronic lung disease has not been previously shown.
López and first author Ítalo Araújo Castro, PhD, a postdoctoral researcher in her lab, developed a unique system involving a natural mouse virus known as Sendai virus, and fluorescent markers of infection. Sendai is related to human parainfluenza virus, a common respiratory virus that, like RSV, has been linked to asthma in children. Sendai behaves in mice in very much the same way that human parainfluenza virus behaves in people, making it an excellent model of the kinds of infections that could lead to chronic lung disease.
Using the fluorescent trackers, the researchers could observe signs of the virus throughout infection. After about two weeks, the mice recovered, but viral RNA and protein were still detectable several weeks later in their lungs, hidden away in immune cells.
“Finding persistent virus in immune cells was unexpected,” López said. “I think that’s why it had been missed before. Everyone had been looking for viral products in the epithelial cells that line the surface of the respiratory system, because that’s where these viruses primarily replicate. But they were in the immune cells.”
Moreover, the presence of the virus changed the behavior of the infected immune cells, causing them to become more inflammatory than the uninfected immune cells. Persistent inflammation sets the stage for chronic lung disease to arise, the researchers said. Indeed, seven weeks after infection, the mice’s lungs exhibited inflammation of air sacs and blood vessels, abnormal development of lung cells and excess immune tissue — all signs of chronic inflammatory lung damage, even though the mice appeared outwardly to have recovered. Once the infected immune cells were eliminated, the signs of damage diminished.
“We use a perfectly matched virus-host pairing to prove that a common respiratory virus can be maintained in immunocompetent hosts for way longer than the acute phase of the infection, and that this viral persistence can result in chronic lung conditions,” Castro said. “Probably the long-term health effects we see in people who are supposed to be recovered from an acute infection are actually due to persistence of virus in their lungs.”
The findings point to new ways to think about preventing chronic lung diseases, the researchers said.
“Pretty much every single child gets infected with these viruses before the age of 3, and maybe 5% get serious enough disease that they could potentially develop persistent infection,” López said. “We’re not going to be able to prevent children from getting infected in the first place. But if we understand how these viruses persist and the effects that persistence has on the lungs, we may be able to reduce the risk of serious long-term problems.”

character notes on v1's design team mel, cas, and belle......mel was the head and originator of the project, the one who developed blood-absorption plating and largely conceived of v1 as a counter to the earthmover. cas was software lead, who was able to produce a new generation of supreme machine intelligence suited to fighting in the earthmover. belle was the hardware lead, who understood how to make v1 lightweight yet sturdy, and integrated a proper system to actually work with mel's new plating.
mel is an eccentric who has been ill most of his life due to severe lung and skin damage resulting from pollution and fire exposure without proper protection. his poor health has caused him to be consumed with his creative pursuits, v1 being the culmination of a near decade of dedicated work and dreaming...as a result, acutely aware he has little time left to know it, mel cares deeply for his creation and does everything he can to connect with it. he is viewed in many ways as unstable, but cas and belle can see mel's genuine enthusiasm and confidence in what they have made, what was born from so much isolation and late nights pushing his declining body to its limits. his interest lies in the art of what he has made, not so much conceiving the end of the war but instead simply wanting v1 to create an irreplaceable new generation of machines. one that cannot be outdone, immune to obsolescence. however, he dies before the new peace is established, never knowing his child was shelved without ever having a chance to prove itself the way he knew it would. cas and belle are the ones who advocate to save v1, just in case, not wanting to see mel's dream die with him even when it's been rendered obsolete under the one condition mel couldn't have predicted. they oversee v2's creation, hoping it will carry mel's torch, and terribly let down when it goes the same way as the first. too expensive. too unnecessary. it can't be sold.
cas is the most existential of the group, aware of the machines' capacity for sentience and knowing v1 will be much more capable than most given how he programs it. it gives him terrible anxiety and insomnia, haunted by creating something so perfected for war yet that could know itself, could develop an identity in the horror of its reality. he finds little comfort in mel, who wishes more than anything to see v1 become much more than any other machine, to truly achieve that standing of "supreme", while belle thinks little of such things as long as it ends this damn war. it makes cas much stricter about protocol, attempting to prevent what he believes to be the cruelest fate imaginable for v1 - no treating v1 as anything other than a war machine, keep to drills, to training, affirmatives or negatives to its performances. cold grades, nothing else. this, of course, fails terribly - it comes to a head when, during one-on-one training with mel, v1 calls the medics for him when he passes out due his oxygen running low. cas knows how he programmed it, he knows it was never taught to give assistance...it saving mel proves it's already thinking outside of his parameters, and he can't stop it. in addition to preserving mel's legacy, cas insists on v1's storage rather than dismantling it because destroying it now would be too cruel after he made it this way.
belle is largely a utilitarian, though she is often angry and rough in her approach because she's exhausted by war. she works very closely with mel, putting her genius together with his to make anything he needs a reality as she believes this is their last ticket out. the earthmovers are killing everything, killing them - she often feels like she must have lost her mind, the way so many others take this never ending war as a given, as the default for humanity. she puts everything into making v1, her skill enabling it to work at full capacity on just 1% of blood. she develops the feedbacker, perfectly complimenting mel's blood plating and the quick, clever brain cas has programmed. she's lightning fast with her fixes and she places her dreams on v1 in a way similar to mel but without the sentimentality - she needs out, she wants it to be done, and she's willing to do anything to push through her own limits to get there. belle is shocked when the new peace is achieved without any implementation of what they all worked so hard for...and while she can't be upset about her one wish being granted, there is something bittersweet in seeing their prototype now go to waste. she endorses the creation of v2 as a way to see their work at least continue on to maintain the peace, but is aware of how much of a longshot it is. still, she is forever proud of v1 and v2, believing they truly had created the best.

Covid is not just a cold or “mild” even when you’re vaccinated. my mom died from Covid in October. her body could not remember vaccines because her immune system was broken from Lupus. she fought for 5 long weeks intubated before succumbing to lung failure. I will have to live with this forever and I’m only 24. I am so tired of people saying it was her pre-existing conditions or acting like her death was inevitable or telling me to sue her doctors. “Covid kills people” is not a fucking conspiracy

Update
Hey everyone. Long time no see. I want to once again thank you for your patience in waiting for updates, reassure you that none of my fics are abandoned, and give you an update about what is going on.
So, longest story short, I've been in the middle of both a physical and mental health episode that started around April but has only since gotten worse. I have a compromised immune system, but it's not enough to keep me house bound full time. It just means I get sicker more frequently and more intensely than others do. What could be exhaustion from a hot day could easily turn into a flare up of fever and leave me in bed. If I get too emotional reading something and cry a lot, it has turned on me and gotten me sick the next day in the form of sinus infections or a bronchitis flare up. It's something I've struggled with for almost my whole life and it just hit me back to back to back these past few months. On top of my pre-existing lung conditions which always suffer in the summer with the heat, I just got dogged down very fast and I was spending more time in bed sick than I was outside of bed able to function normally.
On the mental side of things, I had to change dosages of my migraine medication a few months ago, and it led to me having to go to the emergency room. Since then my finances have been struggling due to a cost I didn't expect and since I live alone, it has been hard for me to play catch up. It's drained me emotionally and along with normal depression, and I was just trying to survive paycheck to paycheck. I am still not in a place I want to be, but I realistically can't wait to be in that place, because who knows when, or if, it'll ever come.
And the third thing is my lovely beta. She is an essential part of my creative process, I bounce ideas off of her, she makes sure my writing doesn't sound like shit, all the good things that come from a beta. But she is also my best friend. Due to my situations and her situations, we have had a lot less contact in the past few months and I don't want to add to her stress with what's going on. She is also on the other side of the world, so trying to find times that work for both of us has gotten harder. And I want to spend the time I do get with her on just being us, not having to fuss over fanfics.
The updates will start again fairly soon. Just give me a little more time to try and settle into my new reality.
I appreciate you all so greatly, thank you for reading this update, and once again thank you for your patience.

The wheel dictates Aron must suffer an asthma attack! 👻
This ask was so interesting to write because Aron doesn't have asthma, but I found a way to make it work! I hope you like it!
Cross posted on AO3 and Wattpad
Deep breath (Sam x Aron)
Aron loved her job.
Growing up, she always knew she wanted to go into the medical field. She’d struggled with her health and chronic pain for as long as she could remember, and many of her family members did as well. She watched her own father battle cancer for years, a battle he lost. When he passed away, she knew she wanted to do something to make a difference in the medical field.
However, she never thought she’d be capable of medical school, since she barely was able to make it through high school. So that was a dream she gave up on pretty early on in her teen years.
However, when she turned eighteen and learned about magic from her late grandfather, he offered to find her a job at a hospital in the demon districts. Aron wasn’t sure how the legal aspect of it worked, but after about four years of training there, she had a medical degree. Finally she was a doctor, working with demons and humans alike, while also improving her magic skills.
Unfortunately, not long after she was finally officially able to call herself a doctor, her own health took a turn for the worst. Her seizures became a daily occurrence, her paralysis episodes becoming more intense, and the pain was unbearable. So, she had to quit the job she loved so much.
Then, after receiving a proper diagnosis of chiari malformation and then the surgery to treat it, she was finally able to go back to work. Her boyfriend Sam- who happened to be an incubus, had stood by her side every step of the way as she returned to work.
The first few months were incredibly difficult, but no one could deny her increased mood as time went on.
That all being said, her complicated history made it even harder for her to take breaks when she needed it. It had been about a year since she returned to her job, so she had gotten used to the long hours. Human illness wasn’t contagious to demons, so she continued working when catching sickness she could work through, and asked other doctors to cover human patients until she was better.
She made extra sure to take precautions around sick demons, not only for her own sake, but also for the sake of the incubi. She didn’t want to get sick from demon illness, and she sure as hell didn’t want to get the others sick as well.
But that didn’t make her immune. Even the most effective ways of preventing herself from catching something didn’t stop her from coming down with something.
Over the last three years, a new illness began spreading around the districts. It was believed to be brought over between planes, but no one could pinpoint the exact cause yet. It caused symptoms that heavily resembled a human illness known as asthma, a chronic lung condition that causes inflammation in the airways.
This new condition wasn’t exactly like asthma. It only lasted anywhere from a few weeks to a year, instead of being lifelong. It also caused fevers, not high enough to cause a problem but high enough to cause discomfort.
Aron and her colleagues had been looking for better treatments for a while to lessen the symptoms, and had begun prescribing steroid inhalers to the humans who contracted the condition. Unfortunately, the demon's immune systems were killing any possible effect the medication may have, so they were stuck on how to treat them.
Aron was currently drawing blood from a young witch patient. Her recently dyed hair- dark brown with baby blue streaks- was in a claw clip. She had on simple black pants and a blue t-shirt underneath her white coat, a name tag hanging around her neck.
The room felt extra cold, but she could feel herself beginning to sweat a little bit underneath the layers of clothing. She tried to brush it off as her own issues with temperature regulation. She smiled at the patient and gave her instructions to check out at the front desk before stepping out.
She walked through the hallway, planning to do some paperwork until the next case, when she started to feel a heaviness in her chest. She cleared her throat, feeling her breathing become a bit labored.
As she kept walking, it was quickly becoming harder to breathe. It felt like she was under water, gasping for air as she began coughing violently. She desperately tried to fight for air, the strain of her coughing sending waves of pain through her head and neck.
Tears began streaming down Arons face as her lungs burned from lack of oxygen. She leaned against the wall, her throat feeling like she’d swallowed sandpaper. Her head felt like it was going to explode.
“Doctor Anderson?” she heard a voice call; it sounded like her coworker but she couldn’t make out the sound over the volume of her coughing and the ringing in her ears. “Aron? Aron!”
She heard the sound of a door opening, and some commotion before feeling something being placed against her mouth. An inhaler.
“Deep breath, take a deep breath,” she heard them say.
Aron parted her lips and took the inhaler in her mouth, inhaling the medication, then repeating. After twice, they pulled it away, placing a hand on Arons shoulder. “You okay?”
Her coughing calmed down, an ache still in her chest. She opened her eyes and looked at her coworker and friend, who had short blonde hair and big, silver eyes. “I’m…I’m okay…”
Aron was instructed to go home after an evaluation which revealed she’d contracted the illness. She argued otherwise, but was left with no choice. They sent her home with an inhaler and some pills.
She had a tight frown on her face as she stepped inside of the mansion.
“Doofus? What are you doing home so early?” Sam asked her as he started to walk over.
Aron put her hands up and stepped back. “Don’t come near me, I’m contagious.”
He huffed and crossed his arms. “Human sickness can’t hurt me, remember?”
“‘S not human sickness,” she countered. “It’s fucking demon asthma.”
“Oh,” he said, the attitude leaving his tone. “Shit. What can we do?”
She held up the inhaler and pills wordlessly, not speaking.
Sam sighed and stepped closer, making her frown at him and step back. He gave her a pointed look. “I can handle some asthma, doofus. What, are you going to just stay away from me until you’re better?”
“That’s literally the only thing I can do to keep you and the others from being sick,” she said, beginning to walk up the stairs. "I hate my fucking job," she added in a grumble.
"No you don't," he sighed. “You can’t just stay locked in our room. I’m gonna need to get in there eventually.”
She paused and leaned against the wall, being hit with another coughing fit. She held the railing of the stairs as she tried to keep herself upright. Immediately, Sam was beside her, stopping her from falling and gently rubbing her back. “Sheesh. You’re gonna cough up a lung.”
“So will you if you don’t get away,” she told him as her coughing finally stopped. She didn't truly want him gone, but feeling sick made her grouchy.
“Whatever. Come on, let’s get you to bed,” he said, carefully picking her up and taking her to their room.

No. 1: RACE AGAINST THE CLOCK Search Party | Panic Attack | "If only we could hold on.” Characters: Spike Trivet, Charlotte James (oc) Pairing: None Verse: Main ( Twitter timelines ) Mentions: Sadie Cullen (oc) Christian Cage
Tumblr media
He shouldn't be there. He knew it wasn't a good idea to be standing outside her office after everything that she had done to the man that he considered a father figure, but Spike Trivet couldn’t stop himself. His chest was so tight he felt as though his own ribs were going to be what caved in his lungs. He knew precisely what this feeling was; he had felt it a thousand times before, and over those years he knew exactly where he could go and where he would be his safest to express his feelings. He always knew that the office of Charlotte James was going to be a safe haven for him in the height of his hypochondria.
He assumed that this particular bout with his anxiety disorder was brought on by the birth of his son Arthur just hours before. Having a new baby in the home, his mind was so much more aware of all of the germs that could possibly bring harm to his young child, and it made absolutely everything in him feel as if his very being was spinning off its axis. He knocked lightly on the door, as he had thousands of times in the years they had known each other, but something just felt incredibly different this time. He felt like this was the start of a betrayal he didn't want to have to make. "Charlotte?” He cursed his own voice for sounding like a sheepish child afraid to bother their mother.
“Come on in, sugar,” Charlie called from her spot on the other side of the office, where she was trying to refill a few small drawers with supplies that she would need for the rest of the night. "I was wondering if I was goin’ to see you or if certain people were goin’ to keep you away from me.”
“You knew it was me?” Spike asked in surprise.
“I know your voice by now, sugar; of course I knew it was you. When you're like this, just like when I'm upset, you're accent gets particularly thick when you're having a hard time of it. What's goin’ on, darlin’?” the small Texan blonde asked, turning her wheelchair to face him.
Spike took a deep breath, trying to steady his heart that he felt was ready to beat out of his chest before his gaze fell on the blonde in the room for the first time since he had walked in. “I'm sure that you heard that my Sadie gave birth yesterday to our son, Arthur. I know that I am needed, but I'm not so sure that it is wise to be this far away from her and from them so soon after she has given birth. His immune system hasn't formed yet, and I don't want to take the risk of bringing something back to him that his little body isn't used to and perhaps wouldn't have encountered back home. You know how germs can be different in different areas.”
Charlie reached out to take the younger man's hand and give it a gentle squeeze. “You're goin’ to do just fine, y’know,” she told him gently. “I know that being a new parent is a scary thing, especially when you didn't have the greatest role models growing up. I know I was terrified when I had my Ollie. He's going to be just fine. The fact that you're worried about what might happen to him shows that you are already a better father than yours was.”
“My condition,” Spike chose his words carefully, “doesn't deal well in times of high stress; I'm sure you've noticed by now.” he let out an almost bitter laugh. His right hand squeezed tightly on the head of the cane that he was leaning on. He always felt strange using it in her office because he wasn't using it as a true mobility aid but more as a fashion statement and a statement of power, but it was a comfort item for him in moments like these. “If he finds out that I've been here, he's going to have my head,” he added with a sigh.
"Well, I'm certainly not going to tell him that would be breaking patient confidentiality. So unless you tell him, I don't know exactly how he would find out, seeing as there's no one else anywhere near the office right now. If I can be totally honest with you, sugar, I don't care if he finds out either. I don't care what he thinks of me anymore.  I know you've got it in your head somehow that you need him but you never have, and if he's going to try to stop me from doing my job and try to stop me from taking care of someone that I have taken care of for years, that's his problem.” She guided him over to a chair in the corner of the room, using only the motion of her chair to suggest his own movements.
Spike slumped down into the leather chair without a word, allowing the tip of the beak of his bird skull-adorned cane to collide with the brick wall beside him, the noise shaking him from his thoughts. “I need to pull myself together,” he spoke, almost angrily, “but my mind is already so emotionally spent.”
“I’ll get you a glass of water for now,” Charlie spoke up, already moving to fill a disposable cup for him. “You relax; take as much time as you need. We aren’t even goin’ live with Zero Hour for a bit yet, so you don’t need to worry about call time anytime soon. I can get Jill to get you access to a quiet room if you need it, if I need to see anyone else before you’re ready. We can give Sadie a call. It’s only, what? Ten or eleven there?”
“Can I just stay with you for now?” Spike asked in the same small voice that had called her name a few minutes earlier.
Charlie smiled softly. “Of course you can. I can also make you a cup of tea if you want?” I keep a little bit in my office in case I need a little extra push to get through the more painful nights. I may not have a kettle, but I do have a Keurig,” she laughed lightly.
“Charlotte, even in my current state, I would never dream of such an abomination,” Spike shook his head with a smile, “but thank you—for everything.”

Unnatural (v1-2)
(Chapter List)
MATURE CONTENT WARNING : This story deals with some disturbing themes. Check the tags. IF any of these are triggers for you or will disturb you... then DO NOT READ!!
Saphron didn’t know what she should feel, as she stood beside the crib, inside of Vale Memorial’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Before her, lay Jaune, his small, frail body nearly covered with wires, and tubes. Breathing and Heart monitors beeped just to her side. He was alive, and had been airlifted here from Ansel. She and her mom arrived two days later.
A cold knot formed in Saphron’s stomach. One of dread, pain and longing. Part of her wanted to hold Jaune, to cuddle him, to let him suckle from her, another, a darker part wished he would just die. That he would cease to be, and stop reminding her of their bastard of a father. Her mother had been right that he would never again hurt her, or anyone. Delivery of her video testimony plus the results of a paternity test sealed his fate.
“I hope he gets raped every day for the rest of his life.” Saphron growled, as she watched Jaune’s bare chest rise and fall. “Fifty years is too little… he should die.”
Tears started to fill Saphron’s eyes. Memories of his nightly visits, and special trips, flooding her still healing mind. She didn’t hear the entrance of her mother as her mind went back to the night of that last attack. The day her mother finally protected her, and the day she found out…
“Saph?” Jasmine asked as she gently placed a hand between her daughter’s shoulders. “Are you okay? Do want to go have a rest?”
Saphron jumped a little at the touch, but settled quickly, and just shook her head.
“He’ll be okay. The best doctors in Vale are looking after him.” Saphron looked at her mom, and started to sob. “Saph?”
“What if I don’t want him to be?” Saph choked out as she was enveloped in a warm, protective hug. “Am I a terrible person for thinking like that?”
“No, you’re hurting, and have been hurting for a long time.” Jasmine whispered softly. “What happened wasn’t your fault, nor was it Jaune’s You’re both innocent… and I should have protected you better.”
Saphron continued to cry into her mother’s chest as Jasmine just stood there doing her best to comfort her poor broken child. A clearing throat caused Jasmine to break free of her thoughts and look at the doctor that had just entered the room. “Can I help you?” Jasmine asked, her tone relatively sharp. After her former husband, Samuel Falleaf’s actions… Jasmine found she had little faith in others.
“Mrs Arc, Ms Arc… I… um… I here to discuss Jaune’s condition with his mother, so if Ms Arc would be so…”
“Anything you have to say, she has a right to hear.” Jasmine cut him off coldly.
“Okay.” the young Doctor consulted his tablet, before speaking. “Jaune did reach full term, and preliminary post birth examinations showed no issues… however…”
“What is wrong with Jaune?” Jasmine asked bluntly.
“He has ILD, or Interstitial Lung Disease, which is a complicated way of saying his body is attacking his lungs, and because of that is causing him to have elevated blood pressure which is giving him heart issues.”
“So, what does that all mean?” Saphron asked, peeking out from her mother’s embrace.
“It means we need to isolate him, and start treating him with a corticosteroid, and oxygen therapy.” The doctor replied.
“Why isolate him?” Saphron once again asked from inside her mother’s embrace.
“The medication is an immune system suppressant, so while we are treating him, we will need to keep any additional vectors of possible contagion or infection at a minimum.”
“So I won’t be able to be near him? Hold him? Feed him?” Saphron asked, her voice wavering.
“Um… I… no, I’m sorry, until he is stabilized we will have to keep him isolated.”
“DO what you have to doctor. Do anything and everything you have to.” Jasmine spoke up as she tightened her grip on her sobbing daughter.
“Rest assure, we will.” the doctor prepared to leave. “I will make the arrangements for his treatment to begin shortly.”
“He’ll be okay, right?” Saphron asked, her face still buried in her mother’s chest after the doctor had left the room.
“He’s an Arc, he was born too stubborn to give up.” Jasmine replied to her daughter, even though her blue eyes, shined with held back tears. “He’ll get through this… he will.”

Hundreds of thousands of people have been affected by long covid but it's still widely misunderstood
Covid may seem like a thing of the past for many of us, a nightmare we left behind at the start of the decade, but for some, it never ended. Long covid affects hundreds of thousands of people in the UK, including many who only had a mild case of the virus.
Officially the illness affects about two million people in the UK but some, including researcher Mark Faghy, argue that figure isn't accurate and that the real scale of the problem has been “swept under the rug”. Sarah Barley-McMullen, 54, originally from Derbyshire has been living with the illness since 2021.
After having mild symptoms when she was first diagnosed, she thought she could carry on living like normal. Then she lost her voice and started suffering from hearing loss, chronic fatigue and the inability to cry.
Sarah has had to start using a walker to get around and wears a mask in public to ensure she doesn't catch covid again. Her particular case continues to evolve, with more symptoms that are changing her life year on year.
It all means that Sarah is unable to work at her high-level academic job at the University of Derby. She said: “I was never hospitalised, so I stayed at home because I wasn’t that Ill, but then I never got better. My hearing got worse, I started to lose my voice and I made an appointment with the GP and they said to keep an eye on it.
“It started to severely affect my mental health, I am such an extroverted person and I loved my job but I just couldn't do it. Then after months I got back in touch with the GP and they realised I sounded Ill so they took me in and found I had a partially collapsed lung.
“I was a senior academic and the University of Derby was great, but I found that I had chronic fatigue. For example, I would have a meeting with someone one day and then be completely wiped out the next. It has completely flipped my life upside down.”
Since then Sarah has taken medical retirement and been included in a national study of the condition, working with academics to research and understand it. Sarah has urged the general public to keep testing because covid may still impact vulnerable people.
Professor Mark Faghy, a clinical exercise science expert at the University of Derby, has been working closely with Sarah and a number of other patients. He said: “It's such a broad condition, with over 200 different symptoms so it’s really hard to pinpoint and sum up.
“Unfortunately it’s an inconvenience to people, when you look at the numbers people don’t put that into context, two million people in the UK have this condition, but if you put it into everyday context it is one in thirty. You could fill every single football stadium in the UK with people suffering from long covid. That is the reality but people don’t want to talk about it.
Sarah continued: “I got Covid again in January and it left me with an auto-immune disease, all my joints are painful and I can barely move. People don’t understand that it's a vascular disease, you have mild symptoms like a bad cold or flu but if you have a weakened immune system then it will affect different organs.
"Long covid happens when you ignore covid and don’t rest, you don’t allow your body to catch up and then you develop these conditions. The pandemic is far from over. ”

How to Improve Your Lung Health and Prevent Breathing Problems
Maintaining lung health is essential for overall well-being, especially in an environment filled with pollutants and allergens. Tips to Improve Lung Health
Avoid Polluted Areas: Air pollution can significantly harm lung tissue. Avoid areas with high pollution, wear masks if necessary, and opt for indoor activities on days when air quality is poor.
Exercise Regularly: Cardiovascular exercises like walking, jogging, and swimming improve lung capacity and strengthen respiratory muscles. This increases oxygen supply and reduces the risk of lung infections.
Stay Hydrated: Drinking water helps thin the mucus in your lungs, making it easier to breathe and reducing the risk of respiratory infections.
Quit Smoking: Smoking is the leading cause of lung diseases. Quitting smoking improves lung health and significantly reduces the chances of developing chronic bronchitis or other serious conditions.
Use a Humidifier: Dry air can irritate the lungs. Using a humidifier in your home adds moisture to the air, which helps keep your airways moist and clear of irritants.

Why did you elbow me? 190
Achilles Castle part 92
Lemonade and lies PART 35
Kate: pov oh no that could kill me, i have a heart condition. The Dr asks what type I have, how long I have had it for and if anyone else in my family has one. I have arrhythmia and I have had it for about 5 years and I'm the only one in my family who does. The Dr asks what caused my heart condition, I  say as a matter of fact a bullet. The Dr asks me to repeat what I just said because she thinks she didn't hear me right. Oh no you heard me all right. I will give you a few minutes to let it sink in. By the way, I was shot at a funeral, my Captains funeral

Dr Springfield: pov I'm going to need an explanation or a story for this. Kate starts out with I was a detective at the time. Well that makes sense cops are always getting shot by suspects. She gives me a little back story about what led up to her shooting. Mr Castle explains that she went into cardiac arrest in the ambulance, had a collapsed lung and needed a chest tube. She was immediately taken into emergency heart surgery.
Castle: pov The bullet nicked her inferior pulmonary vein and left ventricle, she then went into cardiac arrest again they had to use the paddles and do manual cardiac massages she then flatlined they eventually brought her back to life,  she had severe blood loss. She spent 1 week unconscious in the CICU before waking up. She was on disability for 3 months, has a heart condition and PTSD, her immune system is also weak.
Dr Springfield: pov I don't know what to say, that must have been hard since it was your Captain's funeral and everything that happened with him was probably still very much fresh. Kate says very much. um you said before when I mentioned the epi-pen you said that  it could kill you, is that because of your heart condition. Kate says I guess, I'm not 100 percent sure how it would affect me. Yeah, let's not take that chance.
Kate: pov Dr Springfield suggests I take an allergy test on top of the blood one. It's the safest option for me. She would just have to swab my mouth and draw some blood then send the samples to the lab. I should know the results in a few days. It's recommended that I keep some benadryl at work or on me in case I need it and to never drive after taking it.
Castle: pov Dr Hazel Springfield grabs a swab out a cabinet to swab Kate's mouth for the test. Once that is done we are sent downstairs to the lab so she can then get her blood drawn for the blood test. Dr Springfield has notified the lab that Kate has a heart condition so that way they are prepared. After a few minutes of waiting Kate's name is called.
Lab tech Lauren: pov Dr Springfield notified us that Kate has a heart condition, that way we could monitor her more closely. After talking with them both and learning about Kate's medical history and how it all happened I get the supplies ready to draw some of Kate's blood. I decided to put a pulse ox-meter on her finger and a heart monitor just in case another lab tech is monitoring her blood pressure. Captain  Beckett which vein is better to use.
Kate: pov they are all rough i’ve had so many iv’s and blood draws that my veins are not the best. She eventually finds a good vein and draws my blood with no problems. I have to wait a few minutes to see how I feel. I can hear someone in the waiting room complaining because it's taking so long. The same person says  why does she need two lab techs. The receptionist replies to the rude person saying she has health issues and they want to take extra precautions with her. The same person replies that she doesn't look like she has health issues,  probably just doesn't like needles. He then goes on about people faking illnesses to get special treatment. I’m free to go. I decided to comfort the person about what they said. The lab tech is standing next to me, I ask who said that about me. The receptionist points to a man wearing a black shirt and jeans with a small child next to him. The man named D'Arcy looks a little bit angry. D’Arcy I understand that you were the person who said the mean thing about me but I don't think this is the example you want to set especially for this little guy sitting next to you. Because it's not cool to be mean to others you know what else isn't cool having a bullet tear through your chest and needing emergency heart surgery just to survive. I lift up my shirt to show him my thoracotomy scar.
D’Arcy: pov I’m so sorry I had no idea that happened to you. I'm having a rough day and was angry and took it out on you which is not okay. what is your name by the way, she says Captain Kate Beckett. Oh so you're a police officer she says yes and explains as much as she can that is kid appropriate before its my sons turn. You know what I feel so horrible about the way I treated you. My son suggests that we buy her lunch but I don't know what she can have. Is it okay if I give you a 20 instead so you can get some lunch, since I don't know what you can eat. She says an apology is all she needs but thanks for the offer anyway, maybe pay for another stranger's meal instead.

Castle: pov I manage to make it to the car on my crutches, before we head back to the precinct we are stopping for lunch. To be continued.  …….

*Otto asked for Naida and Rayman to accompany him to a different room after he had finished his testing. Rayman got up from the sofa and gently set Pearl down to rest. He kissed her forehead and tucked her in before he would go with Otto. Demona would sink into the floor and take the form of Rayman's shadow and no one seemed to notice. Murfy and Globox were too occupied with watching over Pearl as the parents went to meet with the doctor.
*Otto takes them to another room and shuts the door behind them. Otto makes sure the two are seated before he gives a diagnosis.*
"Her condition is not good at all. There is a severe infection in her lungs. There are even signs that there might be damage in her lungs already."
"Do you think it has to do with the fact she ran away from home the previous night? She was out in Demona's cave for a few hours in the middle of the night."
"I think that she may have had the infection in her system already, but the situation that happened last night could have triggered it to progress faster. She was already sick long before she ran away, it was just not as strong as it was currently.
It's possible that she may develop some lingering effects due to the damage in her lungs. Things like asthma, shortness of breath, I think her immune system may also be compromised. Rayman? You mentioned before that Pearl was once a prisoner to the Rabbids, did you not?"
"I did. Yes."
"It could be that she got this while she was imprisoned there. She's lucky to have escaped before her condition progressed. I'm going to give her a round of antibiotcs, but I am also going to give you a script for an inhaler. She may need this for the rest of her life.
Please, don't blame yourselves for this. You wouldn't have known."
*This wasn't fair. This wasn't fair at all. Does this mean Pearl was never going to experience a proper childhood?
Tumblr media
*Professor Barranco the Third had better hope he never encounters Rayman again, or he will be sorry.*
Tumblr media
The child held tight on Rayman as the doctor started to make some exams, the child just looked at rayman scared looking for protection from her father, she has never been close to a doctor and that shows it, clinging onto her father with her hands, only allowing Otto to grab her arm for the blood test that she didn't like. The red paint again the thing that she didn't want to see. Her face went more into her father's clothes as she tried her best to not look.
When Naida got called to see Otto, the mermaid rushed out of the room and sat on the other side of Rayman to let Otto run the tests. Her hand went to caress Pearl's head as she looked at Otto with concern in her face as she tried her best to be strong, but in reality she was scared, she went to hold Rayman's free hand to comfort both, him and herself.
"What is it, Doctor? Please be honest"
Said the mermaid as she looked at Rayman with concert swallowing a lump that was in her throat, holding onto Rayman with fear.

I need to rant this is a rant about covid n the flu n all that shit.
I have a coworker who refuses to wear a mask, we arent mandating masks at the moment but this coworker said if we start to, they “need to let her know in advance so she can put in her two weeks”. This bothers me because of just how selfish it is.
She claims she didnt get the vaccine, had covid once so she doesnt care if she gets it again, and refuses to wear a mask. Lemme break this down.
She didnt get the vaccine. She 100% could, just chooses not to. The reason the vaccine is there is so those who can get it do, making them less likely to get covid. “But its just a flu it didnt hurt me when i had it i dont care if i get it-” theres people out there who cant get the vaccine. Those who cant have compromised immune systems and other conditions that makes them significantly more susceptible to getting covid and or dying from covid. Essentially the point of the vaccine is for people who dont have compromised immunity to go get it and prevent those with weaker immune systems from getting covid themselves. For example, i get the covid vaccine because my mom has a weaker immune system, covid could literally kill her. Its also a point that if you go in public while having covid and not knowing it/not caring, you could give it to strangers. This could cause that stranger to have a “little flu” like some call covid, or it could cause them to have major respiratory issues, or kill them.
Next, she said covid was just like a flu and she doesnt care if she has it again. Similar to my point before, if she has it then she could transmit it to folks with weaker immune systems. “But it was just like the flu it doesnt matter if others get it-” for others, it may be more than a flu. Some have died from covid yes but others have got pneumonia, had lung damage and other traumatic experiences. Just because one person with covid sees it as a bitty lil flu that doesnt mean everyone will experience it that way.
Last she refuses to wear a mask. Sorry to repeat myself but the point of the mask is to protect others so they dont get it, not for yourself.
The ideology that covid is some lil flu and theres no reason to get the vaccine and all this n that, its inherently selfish and harmful. So many people say about “why do we act like this with covid but not the flu, the flu kills people” thats the fucking point of the ~flu vaccine~ that ignorant asshats also refuse to take.
History proves that vaccines n masks n all of this works. In the US, polio was killing people and making people sick. In the 50’s, hospitals were full of sick patients, kinda like they were in 2020 with covid ridden patients. Heres a graph of the deaths and cases over time.
Tumblr media
The cases and deaths all significantly went down roundabout 60’s and 70’s. The polio vaccine was created and given out starting in 1955 as a shot but later was given as a liquid drop orally in 1961. Theres been little to no cases of polio in the US since the 70’s.
What im trying to say is that if we treat covid how we treated polio, it can be gone. For that to happen, get the vaccines, wear the masks, be considerate and conscious of those around you.
