Most of my autistic friends expect that their friendships will one day out of the blue blow up in their face as people vent built-up frustrations about behaviours that annoyed others that was never ever communicated to them, and/or because of whats called "the double empathy problem" which describes one of the main ways allistic-autistic communication goes sideways. Ive been in social groups - discord type groups - where the autistics get kicked out because we are speaking plainly and askingd questions, and the mods or admin or other authority figures interpret these questions as deliberate insubordination and challenges to their authority, get "tired and fed up" with "the disrespect" and start kicking people. I have seen this happen in disability groups.

And its not all black and white. Like sometimes I can pick up on social cues because I have deliberately learned them, or learned them the hard way. I can even sometimes say one thing and mean another, but I dont often. I might pick up on one cue and totally miss another. Sometimes I just dont know why someone is saying something, theyre obviously implying something but I dont know what. This can get tricky when someone wants to indicate something without being able to be quoted about it, and sometimes I need to ask them to clarify and if theyre still dodgy I have to guess and hope I got it right.

And sometimes we're aware of unspoken rules but we dont recognise their authority over us because theyre bad or nonsensical. We tend to stick to rules if we understand them and they make sense. When theyre crap rules, I dont care how much money someone makes I will treat them the same as everyone else. I dont care how many high status cars someone has, we are equals.

Im getting off track - my point is that basically every autistic I know has ongoing trauma of friendships and social groups suddenly turning on them for no discernable reason and no warning and absolutely no previous indication that anything was wrong - sometimes after being explicitly told everything was ok the day before. This happens to us all the time. Its so damaging and so hurtful.

Personally I dont second guess as a general rule. I someone has a problem with me I trust they will tell me about it and we can problem solve and introspect. If Im not told, no matter what vibes Im picking up bc I dont know if the vibes are real or my own anxieties, I will act like nothing is wrong. If someone wants to blow up at me that has reflects zero on me and entirely on their inability to speak up about whatever was bothering them. Thats not a me problem. I cannot do anything with zero information.

Lemme induct you in an autistic way of bring and introduce you to a script you can use. Something like "hi friend, can I talk to you for a second about the meeting yesterday? [If Y continue, if N ask when you can talk to them about it.*] So I dont know if you noticed, but you spent the whole time tapping your fingernails on the table, and honestly the noise was distracting and mightve been irritating for some people. I just thought you should know bevause I dont think anyone else was going to bring it up with you. Could you please find a quieter way to stim/do what you need to/move in the ways you need to to concentrate. Ok thank you, no ones super upset just mildly irritated I think. I just figured someone should actually tell you"

Or even "hi. You spent the whole meeting earlier tapping on the table and it was pretty loud. Could you please find a way to be quieter in meetings, its just a bit distracting for some people? Awesome thank you".

Just be polite and straightforward, say what you want and what the problem is. Assume competence, sometimes we make deliberate choices against the status quo for important reasons not cluelessness. And give time for them to figure out an alternative, be undsrstanding if they cant. Just use your words, communicate clearly. It might feel a little confrontational but believe me its not as bad as bring dropped as a friend or fired out of nowhere. That sucks**

*Dont just say "can we talk", give a reason, otherwise they will likely spend the time between notification and meeting inventing every worse case scenario they can possibly think of. A couple words of context goes a long way.

** I came across a youtuber who, idk for sure if theyre autistic but they talk with an extremely flat effect (meaning, little tonal variance between words, not much expression in the voice, every word comes out more or less the same, "robotic"), which is an autistic trait. They mentioned in a video that they had a 'normal' job before youtube, until one day they found themself fired, given reason was their flat effect scared people and made them seem unfriendly and unhappy to be there and interacting. Sounded like it was completely out of the blue. Thats a job lost due to ableism though possibly no one involved sees it that way. Some people cant change how they speak or dont want to. Shouldnt have to. But at least mention it, see if the person is willing to adjust, and consider if it truly disqualifies them from being able to perform the job or is it just a little unusual.

I saw some snippet of a callout post for an autistic trans woman where they list social faux pas she committed, and I think we allistic people should all feel 100x more ashamed of not telling people in the moment how we feel about what they're doing. I think its extremely evil and cruel to not only lie to an autistic person and blame them for it but also to feel justified shaming them for your behavior. And it's currently the social norm to do that

Do you have a good resource for story beats/templates? Story mapping?

(I assume you mean a resource to track story beats and mapping and not a resource for generating them. Forgive me if I am mistaken as I have no advice for the latter.)

I learned story mapping/beats/pacing by trial and error and I don't recommend that because it's like banging your head against a brick wall every time you sit down to write.

The two absolute best ways to perfect your pacing and story mapping skills are:

Read a lot of books or screenplays, depending on which format you're writing

Outline, outline, outline

Reading helps build the muscle for beats and mapping because you ingest it to the point that when you encounter a pacing issue, you know it. You feel it in your belly.

As for outlining, it's an age-old tool for a reason. Personally, I hate outlining and often don't do it, but those stories and scripts are often the ones that need the most editing.

Beyond that, this may sound silly because it's kind of a cliché in the business, but the Save The Cat books are full of great tools and tips for pacing, character, etc. It started as a how-to for screenwriters, but now it's a whole media empire of instructionals for writers of all genres and formats, including novels.

You could try that resource (or one of the hundreds of copycats... see what I did there?) to build up your story mapping skill to the point where you know when to ignore those Save The Cat rules.

There are also a lot of other online tools in which you can enter character info and scenes to make pacing easier. (When writing More Than Stars, which had eight—yes, eight!—lead characters, I used a program that turned the character arcs into a graph just so I could keep track of it all.)

From the moment each of them were on screen, I was like “😏 Oh… 😳 Oh… 😭 OHHHHH….”

Steven is quirky and sassy. Marc is reserved but protective. Jake… uhm… well he speaks Spanish /hj, and he looks out for people (in the comics at least). But to see them as an accurate representation of DID is so awesome, especially for DID systems themselves.

Steven is great, I love Marc… Jake absolutely deserved a bit more screen time.

Okay so I remember when Moon Knight first came out, I was like “Hell yeah” and then like forgot about it because college… and then last year after I graduated, someone on Twitter (before I deleted my account) was like “hey, now’s a good time to rewatch Moon Knight” and I was like “Eh, fuck it. I’ll rewatch it.” Little did I know that this would not only reawaken my love for the Moon boys, but to fall down the Oscar Isaac rabbit hole was something else.

Sadly, yeah a bit. Again, going back to giving Jake more screen time so that we can get a better idea of who he is. I get it. It was supposed to be a buildup to this mystery of like “oh why are Marc and Steven having these blackouts?” But mannnnn now I want more Jake. And more Steven. Also that Kaiju fight at the climax of episode 6 always throws me off.

Uhmmmmmmmm… I don’t know.

After my first watch, kinda. Again I was in college and I was focused on college things. But after my first rewatch after a couple years, YES.

In this Chili’s I don’t gatekeep (except for AI bs). I am always excited when someone has watched Moon Knight for the first time and someone either writes fan fiction or draws fanart (like me), or just rambles about the show or the comics, I’m happy.

Oh my god yes. You guys in the Moon Knight community (and extended Oscar Isaac community) that write fanfics, MAN YOU GUYS WRITE SOME SAD SHIT. AND SOME SAPPY SHIT. There was one where the Moon Boys are like a father figure to a teenage reader and like…. MAN I WAS SOBBING AT SOME POINTS. You fanfic writers always deserve your flowers for your time and dedication for keeping us fans who can’t write for shit entertained whilst we wait for more. Especially after the news we got that about Moon Knight’s eventual return, we’ll definitely to keep ourselves occupied with the wonderful fanfics and headcanons about the moon boys. I love you guys. It was immediate. Watching Steven flounder then discovering the tragedy that is Marc. I started on the show, then began collecting the comics.

what’s the thing you love the most about your Blorbo?

I loved the representation of DID, autism and childhood trauma.

We barely got any Jake in the show, and he’s such a fantastic character in the comics. Comic Jake is the only way I can imagine him. Moustache and all.

Depends who’s fronting. Steven’s an ambivert: extroverted to avoid the feeling of loneliness, introverted in his hobbies and day-to-day. Ace Attorney fandom.

I know why people don't like Turnabout Bigtop. I am among the people who dislike Turnabout Bigtop.

But I GET why people like the case. I'm not going to be one of those annoying people who just blindly dump on it because I hate those mfs too.

Thing about Bigtop isn't that it sucks. Thing isn't the weird grooming stuff (though that is a huge part of it). It's not that it could've been good.

It's that - in my personal OPINION - it could have been *great*.

I think it had the potential to be one of the best third cases in the trilogy. It had everything; a fun and goofy setting fit for a pretty dang goofy lawyer game - where the environment itself had jokes and quips and one-liners and mishaps and tomfoolery written all over it, it had the previous case introducing a very interesting and important plotline that gave background for one of the more well-loved characters while also introducing an equally fucked up and lovable new one who was a child forced into a shit childhood of naivete in a CIRCUS with another character who was very naive and childish - whose interactions could have been funny and cute and reflective of said shit from the previous case (seriously she becomes such an important character in the 4th case, WHY would they not include her in this one for some character development? How did they fuck up letting a CHILD explore a CIRCUS?? That would have made the interactions flow MUCH better).

They had a pretty good, sympathetic killer imo, a morally dubious victim, an asshole of a client (who was pretty flat admittedly in-game, but I like his weird, topsy-turvy reasoning for it in the anime. Also, I think Max being kinda a dick would have bode well for the themes of Farewell since most of his clients up to this point have been like...nice? Not nice, but sympathetic, but him having to defend someone who's innocent but a prick would have shown him that just because someone is an asshole, doesn't mean they deserve to suffer for it and that they have the potential to grow as people, which is almost a complete foil to what Matt was. Ultimately, I would have loved the contrast of them as clients and I think it would have also served as character development for Phoenix, especially with his low-empathy tendencies).

They just didn't think that far ahead. They just didn't execute it well enough. They just decided to make three of the adult characters fight for the hand in marriage of a teenage girl. (Bat's part of the story was actually kinda good if he was just YOUNGER, I think him doing that for Regina would have been a stupid thing someone in the circus would do to impress their crush. Damn you Ace Attorney and your weird treatment of underage girls!!)

It just flopped and that's ok.

Even though it kinda sucked, it can still mean something to me.

Though I will admit that there have been a lot rumors, and while some of them underestimate my capabilities, there have been ones that hugely overplay it, too. Especially my ability to "create life". You see, I can swallow and store more than one thing at a time, and I can also store a Snail or a Noodlefly Egg. That isn't widely known, but it is known that other slugcats cannot do these things, so when others see me spit up multiple things, or 'conjure a Snail out of nowhere', they think it's me doing crafting. It's very silly, I know. Folks often go for such strange explanations for things, when the answers are so simple! Maybe I should have told them, but… I think it's more fun this way"

Yuri's dialogue (JP) is so fascinating to study, like... the repetitive use of certain words/phrases that others use sparingly but he uses constantly. the way it feels like his vocabulary is more expansive than what he uses, but he defaults to a "comfort" level of speech. the way it mixes in with his sort of "street talk" words and the sheer level of informality. the way his "street talk" phrasing is contrasted by the tone of his voice (on that note, people I know who also know JP are also very endeared by these aspects of him so I KNOW IT'S NOT JUST ME!!!).

'cause the thing is, he uses phrases that yeah, other people do use, but he uses a handful over and over and over (contrast to other characters' sparing use of repetition). it's actually... really refreshing? it sounds more relatable and less "video game/anime/JRPG/RPG" writing or something, idk. like closer to how a real person would speak.

I do my best in my translations not to make things sound too stiff across the board, but Yuri makes it so easy. it's why I'm so interested in translating all his lines in Vesperia, like... the actual, original tone for him with his original wording because it's smth Eng only players don't get to experience ('cause even if you listen with JP audio, if you don't know the language, ofc you're gonna miss out on context. it's nobody's fault for not knowing, just... they unfortunately miss out). the thing is, there are a lot of times when the lines in and of themselves are not contextually incorrect in the English ver (usually the situation for smaller scenes, because they altered the text outright for more important stuff which was the stuff that originally set me off, but there were also plenty of cases of just vocal tone shifting with the correct context that still gave off the wrong impression), but Yuri's tone is shifted away from the original in Eng even though it's completely and perfectly translatable.

I am by no means about to translate the entire game because let's face it, I really don't care that much for Vesperia on the whole. I'm kinda stuck with it because Yuri's there lo and behold I actually am WAY more engaged in his stories in Rays, Link and Asteria because it's an amazing character put into circumstances where he actually gets to shine and feels more alive, which Vesperia did not provide nearly as well with its very disjointed story. also, Tales gachas have banger stories that are arguably better than the mainline games, and they regularly make Yuri a very central character to the gachas. Crestoria was also about to do it until they pulled the plug on that game and I'm pretty confident something interesting has been lost to the world. also I just generally don't have the energy or motivation to do that, so... I'll only be focusing on Yuri's lines, especially because his stuff is where the bulk of the messing around was. he's just insanely fun to translate for and I love burying myself head first into his speech.

will I actually finish this project? dunno. will I get around to posting it? whatever I get done (so all of it if I complete it), and if I decide to call it quits then I'll post what I have at the time I decide that. will it take a long time? probably, but I can always mention stuff along the way...

According to the "City Of..." novel, Buffy gave Angel a flower once and he keeps it in his apartment in "City Of" even though it's been squashed at this point, and they hadn't preserved it or anything.
