Rating asoiaf characters based on how likely they are to use pocket sand:

Jon Snow - my hot take is that people are very delusional and wrong about Jon. It’s not that he’s too “honorable” or “good” to use pocket sand in a fight coz he’s definitely not above using dirty tricks. But you gotta ask, which Jon is it? Agot-acok!Jon is def not using pocket sand because he thinks it’s dishonorable and a coward’s weapon. Asos!Jon is 8/10 gonna use pocket sand because fuq honor. Adwd and beyond!Jon is 0/10….he’s got something far more devious in his pockets - broken shards of glass.

Dany - yeah she’s using it, 7/10. She’s a smart girl. Like her actions in Astapor and Meereen show that she’s not above using dirty tricks to get ahead. Now how much pocket sand is she willing to use and against who? That’s the question…I can see her hesitating if her opponent is a small child.

Arya - for sure using pocket sand 10/10. There’s no denying it. She’s actually studied which types of sand are the best suited for different situations. But she’s quick enough that people don’t know what happened until she’s far away.

Bran - he doesn’t even know what pocket sand is so 0/10

Sansa - she knows what pocket sand is but she’s usually not willing to use it because it gets her clothes and hands dirty. If she’s really pushed…maybe? 2/10 but she’d gladly watch someone else do it

Robb - oh 20/10 using it no doubt. He’s been pushing Jon to get on the pocket sand trend for years to no avail

Theon - went with Robb to the pocket sand factory for a boys’ date out. 20/10 using it and with RELISH

Ned Stark - knows what pocket sand is, is unwilling to use it himself, but will turn the other way when he sees his buddy whip it out 0/10

Cat - yeah she’s using it, I’m not willing to debate over this 10/10

Davos - um yeah 10/10 using it….look sometimes you have to use all the tools available to you to survive

Jaime - trick question because which Jaime? Pre-hand chop Jaime? Won’t use it on principle. It’s cowardly and stupid. Post-hand chop Jaime? Yeah….he’s using it because he has to so 8/10

Brienne - look she doesn’t want to use it, but a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do 6/10

Pod - *confused* “why would anyone carry sand in their pockets to a fight?” 0/10

Howland Reed - was actually the one who invented the best sand for it and is mass producing it. Probably used it to defeat Arthur Dayne 100/10

Meera - come on, she’s swamp person and howland’s kid so 20/10 using pocket sand

Why doesn't GRRM like Romance? All of his characters with romantic subplots end up dying.

Oh he LOVES Romance... as in the Romantics, a literary movement.

The thing about the Romantics is that a lot of the love stories end tragically, or go through hell to get to the happiness (Jane Eyre, for example). We're all seeking to find a purpose to our life; love, in any form, is a satisfactory answer for many. Even religions often point to this; the Bible itself says God is love.

All life ends in death. That's the reality of this word; to quote Neil Gaiman: death, the high cost of living. Thus, exploring how love enables a conquering of death, even if you don't believe in an afterlife or don't know what you believe about that, is something that many writers want to explore.

Martin's world can be a bit cynical, but if anything I think that makes the beautiful moments shine brighter. I also don't think every ASOIAF romance will end tragically. Sam and Gilly I believe will be happy in the end. I also think Arya and Gendry have a good chance, and Sansa and Harry I think will be happy enough. I wouldn't rule Bran and Meera out either. I do think Dany will die, but I think her life and legacy will live on (possibly physically through a child with Jon). Jaime and Brienne--I do think Jaime dies, but I don't see that as a hopeless ending.

I'm also going to quote Arthur Miller's Tragedy and the Common Man again, even if I don't agree that tragedy is inherently more optimistic than comedy. I do think this speech of Miller's makes a great point that people miss:

The tragic right is a condition of life, a condition in which the human personality is able to flower and realize itself. The wrong is the condition which suppresses man, perverts the flowing out of his love and creative instinct. Tragedy enlightens-and it must, in that it points the heroic finger at the enemy of man's freedom. The thrust for freedom is the quality in tragedy which exalts. The revolutionary questioning of the stable environment is what terrifies. In no way is the common man debarred from such thoughts or such actions...

There is a misconception of tragedy with which I have been struck in review after review, and in many conversations with writers and readers alike. It is the idea that tragedy is of necessity allied to pessimism. Even the dictionary says nothing more about the word than that it means a story with a sad or unhappy ending. This impression is so firmly fixed that I almost hesitate to claim that in truth tragedy implies more optimism in its author than does comedy, and that its final result ought to be the reinforcement of the onlooker's brightest opinions of the human animal.

For, if it is true to say that in essence the tragic hero is intent upon claiming his whole due as a personality, and if this struggle must be total and without reservation, then it automatically demonstrates the indestructible will of man to achieve his humanity.

I do think that, if, say, Dany's arc ends in a heroic sacrifice, it's not her being destroyed by her demons, nor is it anything other than her demonstrating, in that act, the very best of everything a human being could possibly be.

George usually writes his male heroes falling for women and girls who are on the margins of society or don't fit in their standards (Ygritte, Val, Meera, Tysha, Gilly). The men who like "traditionally beautiful" and highborn women are outsiders themselves (like sandor and baelish) or minor characters

That is very true! George has said before that he writes what he knows, and he has also said that characters like Lyanna and Arya had shades of him in them. Meera is written very similarly to Arya imo. They do not fit the mould, and yet men like Rhaegar, Jon, Gendry, and Bran love and admire them.

Brienne is also unconventional and yet she has pretty suggestive, interesting interactions with Jaime.

George loves unconventionality because he himself is unconventional, it seems.

What are your top 10 favorite asoiaf/got characters (including pre-agot ones)?

Aaaaaa anon are you still there?? *it’s been 84 years* thank you for the question!!! unfortunately i am very basic. as i said before, i was not really very invested in house targaryen until house of the dragon - i really like the POV style of ASOIAF, and the “historical register” style of f&b didn’t really appeal to me, though the show got me hooked. but i’m afraid this list is still made, basically, of characters from AGoT onwards.

1. Tyrion Lannister. (Have I ever told anyone this? I rarely mention it. it’s a very subtle aspect of my personality having Tyrion as favorite character of all time ever. Anyway I started rereading ASOIAF with @thistle-and-thorn and when i got to Tyrion’s first actual appearance - that moment with Jon and Ghost - I had to stop and take a breath because I wanted to cry. that is how much he holds my heart. tyrion is not a character tyrion is my friend)

2. Bran Stark. (I love my magic child. My boy who is a tree who is a wolf who is a bird who is a king. Ah!!! *cries thinking about him*)

3. Sansa Stark. (I think it scares me a little how much I read Sansa’s chapters and go like “oh, ok. I get you, I see you”. it’s the dissociation from reality. it’s the duty-driven interface with the world. it’s the struggle to keep the heart soft. it’s the love for women and songs. it’s seeing the world as a tale and people as characters in it and breaking apart when they don’t play their roles and bending reality to fit the script. it’s the unreliable narrator thing; the misshapen memories; the denial. it’s the misplaced trust in older men who are responsible for your education and will most certainly abuse you. it’s missing home and safety and childhood and innocence, it’s being your father’s daughter despite everything. anyway sansa is very relatable and i’d die for her in the battlefield)

4. Alicent Hightower. (Thanks HOTD for this, I guess?! But Alicent Hightower invaded my house and took me hostage.)

5. Brienne of Tarth. (Because Joanna D’arc, that’s why.)

6. Brynden Rivers. (I have a type, I think? It’s cunning, horrible men filled with regret for their choices for me)

7. Meera Reed. (She reminds me of my mom sometimes; that says a lot about Meera, my mom and, most of all, about me, but the point is: I think Meera never did anything wrong in her life and she makes my heart clench with pain)

8. Elia Martell (characters who haunt the narrative! Characters who haunt the narrative!! Everyone say her name now.)

9. I have to say this is 100% because of HOTD and their amazing characterization work, but I am overwhelmed with affection for Viserys I Targaryen to the point of tears.

10. Jaime Lannister (I mean book Jaime, of course, the idiotic, dangerous, impulsive man with an identity crisis and lots of Gender; the whole Tyrion/Jaime/Cersei combo own me completely to be honest but you asked for 10. 11 would certainly be Cersei; and from a certain point of view Jaime and Cersei are like the same person the same thing something something one soul two bodies - so Cersei’s in, right?)

I need to talk about my version of Rand polycule where aside from Rand, Elayne, Aviendha and Min, Mat is also a member. Still not sure if I ship each combination of pairs of this polycule but I do believe the show could make it work.

Lan x Nynaeve is my beautiful otp even since I read the books over a decade ago.

And ofc I also ship my fishwives Moiraine x Siuan.

However, ever since the show started I realised I could be into any combination of characters as long as they are given some scenes together*. The cast has so much chemistry!!

ok so i haven't technically published any o my  fics yet but im getting an ao3 account so i will do soon so you can read them in full in a bit if you wanted  

here some starters anyway i didn't kno i it meant just first sentence or all the whole line so i did the line some are wip because i don't think i have ten that are finished im  still pretty new to writing my own fanfic and i tend to rite really long ones as well so

1) Sansa thought she had long since given up the idea marrying for love.  ( my theonsa wedding  i actually did post one on here was i going make it way longer and more extravagant but i   like how this turn out tbh)

2) “you know, I do believe I owe you an apology”    aaron / katelyn wedding 

3) “ I’m not sorry, why should I be? You never were sorry for what your family did to me . ( throbb - or it becomes throbb eventually - starts it just theon being angry  i wrote this  one after watching that ep it th e scene there theons says i deserved everything i was like oh hell no you did not - 

4)  There was a part of you that always knew it could not last. A part of you that knew he would not stay. ( throbb - you are robb - don't ask me y i wrote  is one in second person it as a experiment - a failed experiment  i you will)

5) they had a great many cats now and although he loved them all he did have  a particular favourite ( soft modern au throbb ft cats i devoted like a full page to just describing each cat they have in detail lmao )

6) Andrew liked cats more than people. people had not been kind to Andrew but cats had never once let him down.  (omg this is just me describing Andrews cats and literally like  noting else happens  theres not even any other characters in it just ya boy and a orange kitty living in harmony aha  i just like to write about cats give all my favs cats 

7)  Andrew’s ragtag collection of strays made me uneasy, he didn’t like them ,he didn’t trust them and he absolutely did not consider himself to be one of them. ( the infamous zombie fic of doom)

8)   I could still remember Andrew’s funeral and how Kate  had lied that day ( umm is this a aaron  based  fic because nobody writes about aaron  i have to do it myself and fuck you all for that )

8) Shireen loved to read her books were her greatest treasures for when she was  with the heroes from her stories she never felt alone ( queen shireen au one day i will finish this one - one day)

9)  theon greyjoy was no stranger to taunts but they no longer cut as deep as they once had. ( theon kills ramsay fic because we all know he should've - no offence  to sansa obvi sansa is it - and i guess teres a slight theonsa ) 

10 ) He had a rude sense of humour and she secretly  liked it she knew she shouldn’t but she did all the same  (theonsa this is  wip )

I like to imagine all the 'mundane' things that could happen between scenes. How many dumb songs do you think Bronn has made up about Tyrion and Jaime while travelling with them? How many things did Jaime say to get on Brienne's nerves during their shitty roadtrip? How many times did Arya grumble threats to kill Sandor? Did Meera play fetch with Bran and Summer? Who cut Arya's hair neat when it started growing out again? Was it Gendry? Sandor? Jaqen? What kinds of things did Jon and Sam and the gang joke about? How many gifts from far away did Davos bring Shireen? Do Dany and Missandei regularly do each other's hair? Do Grey Worm and Daario play Chicken? I just have a lot of thoughts.

What are things you would praise Sansa Stark for? Do you think it matters that some of her accomplishments were achievable only due to the help she received from other characters?

As to the first question, there are two qualities of hers that stand out:

She learns from her mistakes. She might screw up, and she might screw up badly. But generally she seems to reflect on where she went wrong and at least make a considered, self-aware attempt to better herself. She shows actual growth as a person. She’s shown herself to be highly adaptable, mentally resilient and, eventually, shrewd. I think at this point she has a survivor’s mentality, and it will serve her well going forward. She’s also one of the very few characters left who has not had any sort of direct, first-hand brush with the supernatural (beyond, in the books, being a latent warg herself, of course) — no dragons, fire zealot priests, ice monsters, sorcerer-assassins, greenseers and so on. If the story will end with magic being stamped out or sent back into an ebb, she seems the best-positioned to deal with the “real” world.

She’s the best kind of sieve. She’s able to process experiences and relationships with people and filter out the bad while keeping the good or the useful. Her relationship with Cersei is a good example of this: Sansa is able to filter out Cersei’s bad qualities (cruelty, lack of care for people in her charge, being power-hungry) while retaining what it is about Cersei that can improve her (namely, giving as good as you get and not taking anyone’s shit). She does it with Littlefinger, too — she learns how to schmooze and glad-hand and persuade people without going too far and while having some higher purpose than herself in mind. This is related to the first point, but not quite the same.

As to the second question:

Tyrion is alive now only because Jaime and Varys bailed him out before he could be executed — on top of Podrick saving him at the Blackwater and Bronn volunteering to fight for him at the Eyrie.

Dany is where she is because three dragon eggs were given to her because she’s a Targaryen and for absolutely no other reason. This is on top of characters like Jorah and Barristan backing her up continuously; she also has people left in Meereen to clean up after her when she leaves.

Arya had Yoren to get her out of King’s Landing, Jaqen to help her escape Harrenhal and Sandor to keep her alive until she could get to Braavos.

Jon got a priceless Valyrian sword because his dog overheard the ice zombies in time and Jeor Mormont was feeling generous. He also had Yrgitte to help him assimilate into wildling society and Sam’s bottomless well of historical knowledge.

Bran had Jojen, Meera and Hodor to get him to Bloodraven’s cave, and had Bloodraven communicate important information to him.

Jaime had Brienne to get him back to King’s Landing when his hand was hacked off.

Brienne in turn had Catelyn to help her escape Renly’s camp and then Jaime to give her a priceless Valyrian sword.

Davos was knighted for smuggling onions.

Sam had Jon to protect him from bullies at the Wall.

In other words, who exactly in this story hasn’t had help from other characters? If Sansa’s character arc is “compromised” because she received assistance, what are we to make of characters like Tyrion and Arya who always manage to have someone to whisk them out of a jam, or someone like Dany who can keep failing upward ad nauseam? Sansa’s not the beneficiary of anything that anyone else isn’t, and then some.

How can S7 be your favorite?? Like ok fine its better than S8 but I literally tear my hair out during the conflict between Arya and Sansa. Tyrion develops a brain tumor, characters teleport across the world, and we get to watch Daenerys flirt with her own damn nephew and even though they have zero chemistry he still bangs her at the end?

I shall gladly share my counterarguments, anon!

Among other things, Season 7 made me actually care about the Night King. I got invested in the Army of the Dead, when I had always considered that to be more of a “B” plot behind all of the politics and scheming. Even though I’m pretty sure the show itself wanted me to to feel the opposite. The characters certainly did. And in Season 7, they finally brought that conflict to the forefront and the season finale being all about arranging a ceasefire was kind of awesome. And no, I don’t care that it was all for nothing, or even that Viserion died for nothing. They still had to try, and I dunno, it may have been bleak but that’s just the kind of show that Game of Thrones is. It didn’t feel pointless to me. Cersei’s final betrayal led to Jaime leaving her at long last. I have no complaints about that whole truce storyline. 

I agree that the Sansa vs Arya storyline could have been handled better. Rewatching Sansa sentence Littlefinger to his death gives me so much satisfaction every time, but honestly he’s the main problem in that plot for me: His evil is too on the nose for a character that always worked with subtlety. I could have lived without the shot of him looking on with a nefarious grin as Arya discovered Sansa’s old letter. That was just too much. Like most people, I think it’s ridiculous to hold Sansa accountable for a letter that she was coerced to write as a child, but I guess they wanted to give the old Arya/Sansa rivalry some resolution and give them something to do other than wait around in Winterfell. I definitely prefer this over just omitting them from the season. (Looking at you, Bran.) 

Ah, speaking of that sweet summer child, this was the season that killed Bran. And then everyone in the show and the fandom proceeded to forget it happened. Seriously, it’s genuinely uncomfortable for me in the last two seasons to see everyone just explaining away the Three-Eyed Raven as “Bran is weird now.” when both he and Meera have already flat out confirmed that Bran is effectively dead. In short, I don’t mind this being the end of his story. I just kind of wish the show didn’t act like he was the same person anymore, because he’s not. He is The Three-Eyed Raven, speaking through a body that once belonged to Brandon Stark. That’s about it. 

I truly don’t agree that Tyrion lost his intelligence. I know that’s a common complaint, and I could write essays about why it’s not what really happened, and misses the point of his character arc. It all comes down to one particular line “Faith makes fools of people.” Tyrion expressed this as the reason he never subscribed to faith. Until he met Daenerys. He took a chance on her, he lost his cynicism. He also underestimated Cersei, because he was analyzing her with the mindset of what she was like in Season 4, before she totally went off the deep end. S4 Cersei? Would have kept her word to Jon Snow. If only for the sake of her kids, or because Tywin would have made her. But that’s all over now. Tyrion makes stupid decisions in the final seasons because he’s not the heartless pragmatist he was earlier on, 

Jon and Dany lacking chemistry is another complaint I see a lot, and sure, that’s kind of subjective...but all I have to say is, did you see the boat scene? (No, not the sex scene, the other one.) Dany holding his hand? Seeing his scars for the first time? Pledging that they will fight together? Jon bending the knee was a major fuck-up for his character, but damn if it didn’t melt my heart for these two. That’s not even getting into the scene where Drogon and Jon meet for the first time. You just know Dany is thinking “He’s good with kids, too?” Sorry, I’m Jonerys trash. I don’t really care that they’re related either. This is Game of Thrones, they’re Targaryens, and they didn’t grow up together. They only found out after it happened. It’s far more harmless than Jaime and Cersei, that’s all I’m saying. 

I guess Season 7 just got me really excited for the rest of the show. It was quick-paced compared to the others, it really would have benefited from three more episodes...and the constant fast-travel does get frustrating once you notice it. But seeing Sandor, Gendry, Tormund, and Jon all traveling together...stuff like that, just makes it worth it. The combinations of characters that hadn’t really interacted before, and the emotions they wrought. Theon’s reunion with Jon, Brienne’s reunion with Sandor. The return of Jorah. Viserion’s death. Jaime finally leaving Cersei. Every moment that Davos is onscreen. I appreciate the greater scope story, but also the smaller details. I giggled as much as Missandei during the “Many things…?” scene, I squealed like everyone else when Gendry finally came back from rowing. Season 7’s finale isn’t my favorite in the show (Season 6’s finale is just so hard to top) but every moment was incredible. I still get chills during “He’s never been a bastard…”
