Nifts & neves
Niece and nephew aren't the original English words for children of your brothers and sisters. The original words were nift and neve, cognates of German Nichte and Neffe. Niece and nephew were borrowed from Old French and gradually supplanted nift and neve, until these became obsolete. The French words have the same Proto-Indo-European ancestors as Nichte and Neffe, so they're cognates, but very distant ones. Click the graphic to learn more.

Nestled along the rugged coastline of Italy, the Cinque Terre unfolds like a vibrant oil painting that captures the soul of Mediterranean life. Picture five pastel-hued cliffside villages, each one a jewel nestled against the azure waves of the Ligurian Sea, their colorful facades reflecting the warm golden hues of the sun. Amidst the scent of lemons and fresh basil, the air is filled with the laughter of locals and the distant sound of waves lapping against the rocky shore. Cozy trattorias spill out onto cobblestone streets, inviting you to savor homemade pasta while gazing at breathtaking vistas — a dreamscape of terraced vineyards ascending the hillsides.
As twilight descends, a soft glow envelops the villages, illuminating the narrow paths that weave through this idyllic haven. Lanterns flicker above intimate cafés, where the clinking of glasses and soft murmurs meld into a soothing symphony. Here, time slows, life feels richer, and the essence of la dolce vita permeates every corner, inviting you to linger just a little longer in this coastal paradise.

Manarola, Cinque Terre National Park, Liguria, Italy

Known for its pastel-coloured houses that slope down to the Mediterranean Sea, Manarola, seen in today's image, looks like something straight out of a fairy tale. Set on the rugged cliffs of the Ligurian coast of Italy, it is one of five villages that make up the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Cinque Terre National Park. The name 'Manarola' could be derived from the Latin 'Magna rota', which in the local dialect became 'Magna roea' (big wheel), referring to the large wheel of the village's historic mill.

I keep circling back to the idea of APH Genova having long hair in modern times. Except it's kinda ugly and choppy because his ass is too cheap to go to a hairdresser. I wouldn't be surprised if Feliciano takes pity on him and offers to cut his hair (for free!!) sometimes--

Considering he was born just fourteen years after corsica got indipendence from Genoa in 1755 (and barely 15 months after France bought it in 1769 - the dates of acquisition from one republic to the state are a bit different) I'd say he himself was of italian descent at this point lol. It's also pretty obvious by looking at his surname but both his parents were born in italian-ruled Corsica
