Centipedes. It was an innocent question, one of genuine interest, and yet it left Simon's hands idle on the surface of his laptop's keyboards. Fingertips stilled into the sloped surface of the keys, thumbs draped over the curve of the spacebar in a state of stagnancy. It had been what, a good decade of distance between now and then, yet that never seemed to matter to the pathways carved within his mind, fast tracked like a dog playing fetch with it's owner. Claustrophobia hadn't necessarily been the issue to him, not in the slightest. In a way, the restriction was comforting in knowing that there were no hands that could possibly be behind his wedged back, latched down lid denying any access to the crown of his head. Or so he thought. That sliver above, assumed to be for airflow, a bare minimum at that, became the entry point for entities worse than hands alone. The sensation of slick, segmented figures came sliding down from his hair, needle like appendages scrambling for purchase in his scalp on the inevitable dislodging of their landing. It was enough to make Simon stiffen, the short, intentional breaths snapping against his windpipe in initial shock. That wasn't a spider, too many legs. Far too elongated to be a scorpion. They didn't bite. That would have made sense, would have cut out on the suspense on waiting for it to happen. The sting of mandibles never came, didn't give his mind something to latch onto as finite. While his eyes were draped in dingy cotton, he didn't need to see the way their carapace had a dull sheen under the less than ideal lighting conditions, legs a never ending tapping along his nearly barren body. They were finding the rhythm to his fear, seeming to linger where they made the man’s pulse jump. There was more than one, Simon was well aware when some had made it to the ounce of clearance between his back and box, skittering helplessly in a serpentine fashion against the nape of his neck, firing the nerves underneath sweat sheened skin. It was pathetic really; being a relatively lightweight insect and having him pinned under each and every leg of theirs. It wasn't what they did— it was how patient they were. As if they had all the time in the world to undo him. Layer by layer, strip him down to the tissue, burrow into the sinews of muscle and scrape along the ivory of his bones. There came that dog again in that moment, bounding over with what it believed to be helpful, a way out of the current and into a moment that had some semblance of control, the possible lesser of two evils. Rocco. And Simon—he couldn’t move. Couldn’t even blink, because they were on his face now. One paused on his cheek, just beneath his eye socket. Simon remembered to breathe as he came to, ripping his balaclava clean off and hurling it square onto the floor, smashing it beneath his booted heel for good measure. The skin stretched over his face was scored with words in a language nobody should ever have to be fluent in. Currently snapped into a detached, learned stillness while his gaze became anything but his own while leaning down to grab at his mask once more. Gloved hands shook it out, flipped the fabric to reveal it had been nothing but a loose thread. These cotton balaclavas tended to run soft when overused, hence why he owned so many. Into the bin it went, hands returning to the keys for a brief moment to reply. I’d say I’ve got a healthy respect for anything with more legs than morals.

Last Monday of the Week 2025-01-20

Getting the juices flowing, wait, no, not that way

Listening: Atarashii Gakko! is a thrash rock girl group who do these incredibly convoluted and elaborate music videos, I think I saw Pineapple Kryptonite ages ago and forgot to look into them. Their new thing is Tokyo Calling which is a great high-energy song. Terrifically catchy.

Reading: Finished The Spear Cuts Through Water. I love some gay boys who only know how to express their love through punching.

Towards the end the focus of the story starts to slip in a way that works really well with the framing device of the Inverted Theater in which the whole story takes place, as the story slowly moves from being about the protagonists to being about the world they leave behind.

At times I found that the book slowed way, way down, and at other times it moves you through pages at a breakneck speed. The slow sections aren't bad but they could be a little frustrating.

This is very good at selling you the image of the Whole World Around You, between the constant snippets of external thought interjecting onto your story, and the casual way the story moves up and down layers of narrative, you get a very expansive and layered look at the world. Closing out the book by going into the acknowledgements with no warning was incredibly jarring and is such a cool trick to pull off this well.

Watching: Watched John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum while crashed on the couch trying to convince my slightly sick partner to eat more.

That's John Wick alright. Increasingly he doesn't have to say anything because we all know the deal. It's hard to get this kind of contextless context on mainstream media so it's cool that they can do it here.

As always: my conception of the people of this world is that they're the Faeries, they are the Seelie and Unseelie court, their world is layered on top of ours but basically never interacts except in extremis. There's a tiny bit of bleed through from normal organized crime but that's about it, otherwise they're simply too bizzare, their motivations too foreign. They clearly don't care about like. Real Money that much, they have their own currency that buys you seemingly Anything You Want, from the right guy.

Also watched American Psycho again after a long time. I forgot how much fun this movie is, he's so awful. The man has zero rizz!

Playing: I got my hands on a Lenovo Legion Go at a steep discount, so kicking the tyres on that. Mostly so far I watched my partner play through a few levels of Portal for the first time, which is fun! Truly one of the great games to watch someone play for the first time, even if they constantly badger you for hints.

It's a fascinating little device, shockingly powerful all things considered, I was extremely surprised despite knowing that it's basically a 1650 strapped to a lightweight performance AMD laptop chip. You can just run (low and change) Forza Horizon 5 on this!

I'm not used to controllers in 3D so I will probably stick to platformers and 2D RPG's and visual novels on this for the most part but it'll if nothing else serve as a platform I can plug a mouse and keyboard into and use as a spare PC if I want to do local multiplayer stuff at home. I want to work on a rig to make it an HTPC/gaming console type deal too.

Currently running Windows so I can get a feel for the expectations but it will get Bazzite'd at some point.

Making: Sketches and modelling to figure out some furniture. I found out that my hardware place does online cut-to-order plywood which is a huge boon for my project brain. I can cut wood at the makerspace in town and I still might, but you have to check what they have on hanger or order in some plywood which can get expensive fast once you add in saw time.

Trying to design a folding coffee table that turns into a side table when I'm not using it. I hate coffee tables but there are times when you need one. Current plan is oscillating between all wood or finally breaking down and buying a bunch of carbon fibre tubes to make something stupidly complicated.

This is pushing against not so much my skill level as much as my faff limit. Like. There was the option of doing this in brazed aluminium. But ideally I can do as much of this as possible at the free library makerspace and I don't want to deal with safely doing brazing at a library makerspace.

I also because I have brain worms want this to take down relatively small, because at all times I am thinking about Just Walking Out. Carbon tubes mean I can make it mostly slot and bolt together. Brass was an option but it's so expensive, and while aluminium tubes are an obvious choice I think they are simply piss ugly. I would genuinely do painted PVC first tbh.

Tools and Equipment: Caddy is a really neat project

I've used nginx for HTTP/S and CGI for many years but much of the Weague infrastructure runs on Caddy for simplicity. It's an HTTPS server with a very easy to use configuration structure, fully automatic HTTPS, that works even on local networks, and with a really solid plugin system for CGI. It is less performant than nginx but most of the time nginx is simply not your bottleneck. If you want your project to Just Work, whether that's static site hosting or a more complex application, Caddy is easy to deploy and low maintenance. No more hoping you get cron emails when your cert update fails!

Next time I run into an issue with my personal site infra that requires fixing by editing nginx.conf I'm probably just going to migrate to Caddy.

Oooo, loaded question that one! In truth, it's less that I like Surface tablets and more that there's nothing that does it like them.

The windows tablet market is a hellscape where most of what people use them for is lightweight chromebook note block stuff that requires little to no computing power, so most of what's available from most companies is just kinda meh.

You have tons of Lenovo/Thinkpad stuff that tends to run on pentiums and low power i3s and whatnot, it'll be able to play a youtube video but that's about it.

For higher performance there's like two or three models by lenovo, Dell has a few good ones, you can go the gamer route and buy an asus ROG thingie that looks gaudy and like it's made for 15 year olds, but either way you're gonna be running short on something if you just want something basic.

Gaming tablets are high in power but at that point you might aswell buy a laptop since the battery life is atrocious, the lenovo ones are alright but quite new and hard to get used, and I just dislike dell out of principle because they're a terrible company.

So that means generally the only real answer lies in Microsoft's lineup since they offer sleek but pleasant designs, and their performance isn't so through the roof that you can't use them without wall power, but still good enough to do general tasks and basic gaming which is exactly the sweet spot I'm looking for!

The personal answer here is that the surface Pro series specifically covers a large area of specific things I'd like in my secondary device: Portable, decently long battery life, good performance for how long it lasts.

The main purpose for wanting one is so I can use it to watch videos in bed before sleep on a larger screen, to be able to play basic games when I'm away from home, and as an auxilliary screen to put somewhere on my desk when I need it for other stuff like reference pictures or whatnot.

Having a touchscreen is a godsend there since it's so much easier to operate something with just bapping it with your fingers instead of operating a trackpad, keyboard, or mouse so it's the easiest choice for that kind of "no brain" use to me.

The other issue is price, since most of the other companies only recently jumped on the windows tablet bandwagon they're hard to get used, but surfaces are available online for cheap the further back in generation you go.

Currently I've got a Pro 7+ with an i7-1165G7, 16GB of ram, and 512GB of storage + a 128GB micro sd card installed. The i7 is an 11th gen intel model which means it has the blazing fast iris Xe integrated graphics and anything I can really see myself playing on this thing it handles swimmingly (minecraft, warframe, any game from like 6+ years ago).

Bought it for about 500€ last winter, which is extremely good value for what it is, seriously!

TL;DR: Surfaces are the least bad choice in the tablet/convertible market, they're expensive but previous gen models will still do all you'd ask from one without much issue.

It was a default choice for the filesystem when I installed fedora on my laptop and I read little bit about how it is different from like ext4 and what cool stuff it supports etc. But I newer, like, utilised all that stuff in it. So, if you don't mind, can you tell me what am I missing and how do I utilise it potential?

btrfs! what is btrfs? btrfs is a copy-on-write journaling filesystem with various other goodies. my experience is mostly using it on one disk on my personal machine, which seems to be what you're doing with it also. you may have heard some bad things about btrfs eating your data silently and then the mailing list being really mean about it, and all that is true but it's only true if you're using btrfs raid4 or raid5, which you aren't. for our use case there's absolutely nothing to fear- btrfs is an absolutely rock solid filesystem and i wouldn't accept any other for my daily driver

i was planning on writing this whole long thing summarizing my notes because when i was learning all this stuff i couldn't find any source that had everything i needed in one place. but that was 4 years ago, and since then fedora switched to using it by default. nowadays there are a bunch of articles explaining all the fundamental concepts and commands and such. the two linked at the bottom ive read and can vouch for, and they cover basically all the intuition for the concepts and commands and such. so im going to focus on cool things you can do with a COW filesystem

basically all the cool things you can do are snapshots. snapshots, better explained in the links, are lightweight copies of entire file trees. you can, for instance, take a snapshot of your home directory and then be able to access all your files at the time of the snapshot whenever you want, even if you change them in the "real" version. but you can do better than this. if your subvolume layout is correct (and don't worry, fedora's is), you can rollback to a previous snapshot whenever you want. with a little configuration you can make all your root snapshots bootable, so you can select in grub or whatever which version of your filesystem you want to boot into. with a little bit of doing, which im not sure is easy on fedora but certainly might be, i got my computer set up so that my boot directory is just a btrfs subvolume on my regular filesystem. if an update breaks my setup, which does happen from time to time, i can go back to exactly the state i was in, files packages kernel and all

you can and should use btrfs for your backups also. not local snapshots, those aren't very good backups, but incremental backups to an external drive or over ssh to another machine. for this i use btrbk, which is a pretty simple script that just makes use of btrfs features to make safe, fast, and reliable backups to wherever you might want them. then, because it's using native features of the filesystem, recovering from just about anything is dead simple. you can send over the subvolumes and mount them wherever. the one thing is that for most of these you need a bootable drive with btrfs and enough drivers to work on your system. whatever you used to install fedora should work fine

and with that you basically need fear no file loss event, big or small. i mean i wouldn't give up git or anything, but now you can retrieve your desktop layout, your browser settings, your /etc, whatever you want. its absolutely magic. since doing an install with this btrfs setup 4 years ago i have had absolutely nothing break in a way i couldn't fix in under 15 minutes, even running arch objectively badly. imagining life without snapshots feels barbaric now. its one of a handful of things which are just objectively better on linux for any user at any skill level. data loss is a choice, and it has been for almost a decade. take my hand

APFS: yeah apple has this too. time machine is a brilliant piece of software and the apple ppl are lucky to have it. however! i have needed to actually go back and use my backup like 2 times ever. most of the time i just use the snapshots locally. plus afaik you don't have the same range of options to deal with snapshot size- i dont hang onto my steam directory for very long

ZFS: if you need raid id say zfs is definitely better (zpool is awesome). but a lot of the things you can do with snapshots and subvolumes on btrfs aren't actually possible on zfs. a rollback on zfs is a very specific action which invalidates everything that came after- it's not to be done lightly. with btrfs you just move subvolumes around and they're available whenever you need them

encryption: its annoying but you should put your filesystem inside of lvm inside of LUKS and it'll work fine. its the same as using LUKS normally, and once it's open it's the same as using btrfs normally. this would probably suck for multiple disks, in which case you should use zfs

hibernation: use LVM to have a swap partition and call it a day, storage is cheap these days. ive heard swap files are improved somehow (?) but i dont use one and there really isn't any reason to

compression: imo not a showstopper or anything but it comes in handy. i wouldn't expect huge gains in space usage (storage is cheap anyway) but a lot of modern cpus are good enough at compression that it's actually faster to store everything compressed bc the bottleneck is disk IO. you can test what algorithm and level works best for you, and tune it by subvolume. on my nvme i dont notice a difference, but my server has some hard drives and compression speeds things up
