Hi, can you tell me about btrfs? It was a default choice for the filesystem when I installed fedora on my laptop and I read little bit about how it is different from like ext4 and what cool stuff it supports etc. But I newer, like, utilised all that stuff in it. So, if you don't mind, can you tell me what am I missing and how do I utilise it potential?

btrfs! what is btrfs? btrfs is a copy-on-write journaling filesystem with various other goodies. my experience is mostly using it on one disk on my personal machine, which seems to be what you're doing with it also. you may have heard some bad things about btrfs eating your data silently and then the mailing list being really mean about it, and all that is true but it's only true if you're using btrfs raid4 or raid5, which you aren't. for our use case there's absolutely nothing to fear- btrfs is an absolutely rock solid filesystem and i wouldn't accept any other for my daily driver

i was planning on writing this whole long thing summarizing my notes because when i was learning all this stuff i couldn't find any source that had everything i needed in one place. but that was 4 years ago, and since then fedora switched to using it by default. nowadays there are a bunch of articles explaining all the fundamental concepts and commands and such. the two linked at the bottom ive read and can vouch for, and they cover basically all the intuition for the concepts and commands and such. so im going to focus on cool things you can do with a COW filesystem

basically all the cool things you can do are snapshots. snapshots, better explained in the links, are lightweight copies of entire file trees. you can, for instance, take a snapshot of your home directory and then be able to access all your files at the time of the snapshot whenever you want, even if you change them in the "real" version. but you can do better than this. if your subvolume layout is correct (and don't worry, fedora's is), you can rollback to a previous snapshot whenever you want. with a little configuration you can make all your root snapshots bootable, so you can select in grub or whatever which version of your filesystem you want to boot into. with a little bit of doing, which im not sure is easy on fedora but certainly might be, i got my computer set up so that my boot directory is just a btrfs subvolume on my regular filesystem. if an update breaks my setup, which does happen from time to time, i can go back to exactly the state i was in, files packages kernel and all

you can and should use btrfs for your backups also. not local snapshots, those aren't very good backups, but incremental backups to an external drive or over ssh to another machine. for this i use btrbk, which is a pretty simple script that just makes use of btrfs features to make safe, fast, and reliable backups to wherever you might want them. then, because it's using native features of the filesystem, recovering from just about anything is dead simple. you can send over the subvolumes and mount them wherever. the one thing is that for most of these you need a bootable drive with btrfs and enough drivers to work on your system. whatever you used to install fedora should work fine

and with that you basically need fear no file loss event, big or small. i mean i wouldn't give up git or anything, but now you can retrieve your desktop layout, your browser settings, your /etc, whatever you want. its absolutely magic. since doing an install with this btrfs setup 4 years ago i have had absolutely nothing break in a way i couldn't fix in under 15 minutes, even running arch objectively badly. imagining life without snapshots feels barbaric now. its one of a handful of things which are just objectively better on linux for any user at any skill level. data loss is a choice, and it has been for almost a decade. take my hand

additional notes:

APFS: yeah apple has this too. time machine is a brilliant piece of software and the apple ppl are lucky to have it. however! i have needed to actually go back and use my backup like 2 times ever. most of the time i just use the snapshots locally. plus afaik you don't have the same range of options to deal with snapshot size- i dont hang onto my steam directory for very long

ZFS: if you need raid id say zfs is definitely better (zpool is awesome). but a lot of the things you can do with snapshots and subvolumes on btrfs aren't actually possible on zfs. a rollback on zfs is a very specific action which invalidates everything that came after- it's not to be done lightly. with btrfs you just move subvolumes around and they're available whenever you need them

encryption: its annoying but you should put your filesystem inside of lvm inside of LUKS and it'll work fine. its the same as using LUKS normally, and once it's open it's the same as using btrfs normally. this would probably suck for multiple disks, in which case you should use zfs

hibernation: use LVM to have a swap partition and call it a day, storage is cheap these days. ive heard swap files are improved somehow (?) but i dont use one and there really isn't any reason to

compression: imo not a showstopper or anything but it comes in handy. i wouldn't expect huge gains in space usage (storage is cheap anyway) but a lot of modern cpus are good enough at compression that it's actually faster to store everything compressed bc the bottleneck is disk IO. you can test what algorithm and level works best for you, and tune it by subvolume. on my nvme i dont notice a difference, but my server has some hard drives and compression speeds things up

Oooo, loaded question that one! In truth, it's less that I like Surface tablets and more that there's nothing that does it like them.

The windows tablet market is a hellscape where most of what people use them for is lightweight chromebook note block stuff that requires little to no computing power, so most of what's available from most companies is just kinda meh.

You have tons of Lenovo/Thinkpad stuff that tends to run on pentiums and low power i3s and whatnot, it'll be able to play a youtube video but that's about it.

For higher performance there's like two or three models by lenovo, Dell has a few good ones, you can go the gamer route and buy an asus ROG thingie that looks gaudy and like it's made for 15 year olds, but either way you're gonna be running short on something if you just want something basic.

Gaming tablets are high in power but at that point you might aswell buy a laptop since the battery life is atrocious, the lenovo ones are alright but quite new and hard to get used, and I just dislike dell out of principle because they're a terrible company.

So that means generally the only real answer lies in Microsoft's lineup since they offer sleek but pleasant designs, and their performance isn't so through the roof that you can't use them without wall power, but still good enough to do general tasks and basic gaming which is exactly the sweet spot I'm looking for!

The personal answer here is that the surface Pro series specifically covers a large area of specific things I'd like in my secondary device: Portable, decently long battery life, good performance for how long it lasts.

The main purpose for wanting one is so I can use it to watch videos in bed before sleep on a larger screen, to be able to play basic games when I'm away from home, and as an auxilliary screen to put somewhere on my desk when I need it for other stuff like reference pictures or whatnot.

Having a touchscreen is a godsend there since it's so much easier to operate something with just bapping it with your fingers instead of operating a trackpad, keyboard, or mouse so it's the easiest choice for that kind of "no brain" use to me.

The other issue is price, since most of the other companies only recently jumped on the windows tablet bandwagon they're hard to get used, but surfaces are available online for cheap the further back in generation you go.

Currently I've got a Pro 7+ with an i7-1165G7, 16GB of ram, and 512GB of storage + a 128GB micro sd card installed. The i7 is an 11th gen intel model which means it has the blazing fast iris Xe integrated graphics and anything I can really see myself playing on this thing it handles swimmingly (minecraft, warframe, any game from like 6+ years ago).

Bought it for about 500€ last winter, which is extremely good value for what it is, seriously!

TL;DR: Surfaces are the least bad choice in the tablet/convertible market, they're expensive but previous gen models will still do all you'd ask from one without much issue.

My super-causal reviews of some lightweight linux distros

I recently dug out an old laptop that ran windows 8.1 and installed linux on it. Since it's not my main computer anymore, i decided to distro hop a bit on it. The computer is roughly a decade old and has only 2 gb of ram, so lightweight distros it is. What I mean by lightweight is that they put little strain on the underlying hardware in terms of for example RAM or CPU useage. Of course, Linux distros in general have much lower system requirements than Windows ever-growing requirements and size, but there are still significant variations in system requirements. So lightweight distros are light by Linux distro standards. Here are reviews of four I've tried out.

Lubuntu and Xubuntu. I'm going to lump them together because they are both variations on Ubuntu, just with different desktop environments. Vanilla Ubuntu uses Gnome, while Lubuntu uses LXQT and Xubuntu uses XFCE, which are both lighter desktop environments. Xubuntu I think is more friendly to older hardware, while Lubuntu abandoned that goal some years back and nowadays don't even have official minimum system requirements. So Xubuntu is probably better as a light-weight version of Ubuntu, although they are both kinda heavy. And well they're both Ubuntu, and carries a lot of that distro's advantages and disadvantages. Ubuntu due to its focus on user-friendliness is easy to run, and you can get help easily online if something goes wrong due to its large userbase. On the other hand, the developers of Ubuntu, Canonical have gotten a fixation on their own "Snap" file format. And It's just a worse version of flatpaks. They're fine when they run, but take ages to start up, which is annoying. Despite their names, they are not snappy. Overall I prefer Linux Mint, which is based on Ubuntu, but which uses the superior flatpak file format by default instead.

Linux Lite: I dislike this distro. I have reblogged a post that recommended it, and there is one big problem with it: It's default web browser is Google Chrome. That could be forgiveable if I could just go into the distro's software manager and install firefox and uninstall Chrome. But chrome is uninstallable from the software manager and firefox is only avaialble as a snap without command line tinkering. Hard pass, I want to easily get rid of Chrome, Google's proprietary monopolistic mess and snap package firefox is just as annoying here as it is in ubuntu. Linux Mint has an xfce version, the same environment xubuntu and Lite uses, and I haven't tried it yet, but I suspect it's superioror to both of them just because of the lack of Snap bullshit.

AntiX Now this distro really impressed me. It's built to run on anything. "256MB RAM is the recommended minimum for antiX." which is insanely low in 2023. it's one of the few distros to still support 32bit versions. It doesn't even have a desktop environment by default, instead it uses window managers to create a GUI. I was shocked to discover you could install desktop environments from the package manager. And despite everything, it works perfectly fine. It's not super challenging to use, the installation works fine. There are sane default programs like libreoffice and firefox, and a decent selection in the package manager. The window manager desktop is easy to use and very responsive. It was very fast and responsive even when running from an usb stick. Impressive distro to remain perfecatly useable even when it's so light. I will stick to Mint as my daily driver, but if you have an old computer with a low amount of ram, use Antix.

recent changes that have brought me so much joy

1. Routine de-cluttering

One of the biggest mistakes I've made in my semi-minimalist/decluttering "journey" is thinking that I can get rid of everything that doesn't serve all at once.

Which in itself is the product of a whole other, more foundational mistake: thinking that I can know immediately what doesn't serve me and then get rid of it.

With a few exceptions, de-cluttering does not really have to be a massive, intervention-style purge. I've had a much more gentle, yet persistent time with monthly and quarterly unburdening.

Putting things in a bag, out of sight and then revisiting once I realize I never reached for those things once. Emptying out one storage container or a corner of my closet or my bedroom to the point where there's more breathing room, a little bit of absence. And then letting myself adjust to the space, to how it feels to be lightweight and maybe even free.

2. Buying a timed safe + a safety deposit box ... for my devices

Okay here me out:

I have a chunky Dell laptop, very wide. The biggest timed safe I could find did not accommodate this laptop, not to mention the other things like my smart TV remote, my smartphone, my mp3 player.

The freedom is just incredible. Not to sound overdramatic, but I'm deadass.

Before I tried it, I knew how the basic principle would work in theory: if you try to resist a temptation, you have to commit a lot of precious mental energy to that resistance; conversely, if you just remove the temptation as any kind of viable option, you don't have to deal with the decision fatigue that comes with resistance.

I knew this in theory, but it was all that and so much more in practice. With my TV, my phone and my computer all put out of reach (typically for the 8+ hours of my workday plus the hours of 9:30 pm to 6 am to give my sleep hygiene half a chance), I've begun to embrace a much more present existence. For example:

Focusing more on my workday, improving my productivity and my colleague relations.

Writing in my notebooks again, brainstorming, writing stream-of-consciousness, etc. without running the gauntlet of trying to do it on my laptop where distractions abound

Reading my e-reader and physical books again! This has been the biggest and maybe best shift. Getting to read all the stuff in my library without trying to do it on (you guessed it) my laptop. No more competing noise near me, just me and my book.

Getting back into "single-use" devices, i.e. my e-reader and my mp3 player. I've never been diagnosed with any kind of attention deficit or adhd or anything like that, but I routinely will be using 3 to 4 devices at once for no conceivable reason. Now though, even if I choose to stay plugged in, it feels really good to be on one frequency instead of like 5.

Ordering out less. My Grubhub-ordering had become a bit of a reflex, especially in the mornings. I've gotten into morning meal prep now to give myself a better prepared option. This in addition to my phone being fully out of reach has curbed my fast food and overspending by A LOT

I'm building up the nerve to attempt a true dopamine fast, over a two day weekend up to a whole week.

3. Respecting the enclosure

I'm reading this book on writing (as I often do) and one of the first major tasks in the book is to create your "writing enclosure". Whatever you need your setting to be to produce your best work, to get down to business quickly and comfortably - build it into your enclosure.

I'm in a fluid, shared living situation, so I tend to draft my laptop all over the place. Now instead, I keep my laptop set up, along with my USB keyboard, mouse, and adjustable tray - no more cramped typing! no more stiff neck from looking down!
