I've been told I'm actually insane for this one. Let's see if I can bring it to a close in less than two years this time.
Written with the brilliant help of @morbid248 !!
Summary:
Arthur Lester is dead. The last thing he remembers is the panicked run through the witch’s lair, with John’s voice guiding him in the darkness of the tunnels, and Yorick at his belt narrating his doom. A sharp pain in his abdomen, the blade piercing through his flesh, emerging on the other side, as blood seeps out of his body and lands in heavy droplets on the ground. John’s pained scream, calling his name. Darkness. Then he wakes in a painfully familiar place, with a familiar voice in his head. But there are still promises to keep – promises, whose weight hangs heavy on Arthur’s shoulders. Breaking Kayne’s deal threatens eternal suffering not just for him, but for everyone he’s ever loved; yet how can he find his way not only back to England, but to the right time, the right universe? In this place of wrath and tears, Arthur, and the entity within are forced to reckon with the past and with the future. Old wounds are opened, new knowledge uncovered. Will they light a fuse on the relationship with an old foe, risking everything they've worked for — or perhaps, gain an unexpected ally for the final day of judgement?

I'm listening to the new light the fuse podcast with tom and chris and I'm absolutely struck not only on the fact that they finish each other's sentences 24/7 but mostly on the fact that they individually don't use the pronoun I when talking. It's always We and Us. chris uses I only when he's complimenting tom. and tom at a certain point talks about writing, so chris's activity. it's like they have one single mind, they spend so much time with one another the lines are blurred.

Live blogging of the Podcast Jam's Pilots (Part 1):
First of all, I want to say congratulations to everyone who participated. Making a podcast is hard, making one with a time limit, through the internet, improbable but somehow possible.
1° The Ichorus Rot
I was so excited for this project and it did not dissapoint but went above. I was expecting something like the first few episodes of TMA, where Theodorus would read their findings and that would be it, but the team went ahead and produced a full-on radio play with 4 (?) voiced characters. That's incredible. I felt like I got a great introduction to each characters, and if you asked me to describe the personality of each I could. The sound design is gorgeous (i have so many questions of how they made that happened) and with the incredible soundtrack it puts you right in the setting and most importantly the mood.
It reminded me a bit of Sherlock Holmes, but with the great twist of making the detective a doctor.
There's just this one bit, I do understand the distortion as Theodore is talking into the recorder but it is a bit hard to understand (especially if you don't have headphones). This is just to say, I am asking for a transcript.
2 Beyond Repair
Oh no, doctor AIs. I really like the time they take to describe the ship, the camera/monitor details. Again I am astonished at the fact that this is again like an (radio) audio play.
What used to be canada? (What happened to canada!? Did it fell along with western civilazation, but then why is Italy still kicking?).
Oh shit, the AI has turned against them. Poor AI, I bet it is over worked.
I also really like the concept of a wellness cruiseship, because it allows a nice excuse to really get inside the characters mind.
3° The Garden of Baffling Beats
The audio is a bit low.
Uuu. Recent management change? Interesting.
Hey, give the Baseliks their own article piece, love the detail that they are shy.
Carnivorous cats!? That checks out. The journalist wants to pet them, jeje.
Also, werewolves? I love werewolves!
Really liked all the work that came in building the garden.
Aww, thanks for the shoutout.
4° World Fuse
Dont remember the name of the MC, but I too, repeat my order in my mind and then messed it up.
Aarush, thats their name. Also, Harlequeen August? (That is a statement name).
Yeah Aarush, no one trust the goverment for a good reason. So funny Queen and Aarush just started fliriting (?).
Is Queen an independent detective?
Idk if I like Indigo, but I am very intrigued by her. Aaa, candy is a lawyer. That explains things.
Wow, Queen, Aarush, stop fliritng, it is too funny.
Wait, queen is the fuse? I didnt really payed attention to the first exposition lines.
Aww, this very creepy voice is very protective, that is sweet.
I really like that most of the episode took place in a coffee/flower shop.
5° The Block
I really like the music.
Not gonna light the eq/reverb effects make it a bit difficult to understand.
Also, space, aliens, Tamareans!? Podcasting. I really like how podcasting is taboo in their culture, thats so funny.
Hey princess, stop being so harsh. You are alive arent you, dont matter if it is cartoonish.
Velma, he of the four trails and well known peneaut allergy. That is such a title, love it.
Humanoid form? They have humans!?
I really like the radio/cable format, is great to be able to jump between stories of very different moods.
I like the bear. I will watch the movie.
Ahg, re-runs. Donovan, you are the mentors of mentors.
I do hope they stick around. I did not understood half of it, but I loved it. Did i mention how good is the sound desing and the music. Amazing.
6° Schrödinger's Pledge
Oh good, water desing, its so cool. The sound design is so coool.
Better question, what is a sororety and a fraternity, and do I have those at my college? (I really hope not).
Uuu, they are childhood friends (?) Acuantainces (however you spell that word).
Love that Helen will jump in a pool just because.
Jared is like a good jock ?? Idk, but I like him.
Mentaly disturbed, such a weird way to say it. Oh shit, the ableism.
Her mom was a part of this sororety, thats so interesting.
Uuuuu, its through a line-phone that you contact the dead? So cool.
Also I really like how you could feel the Sority (?) lider walking around the room.
I am curious about how Helen's mom died. Uh, she died in the river and Helen jumps into a pool.
Oh no, poor Helen.
Oh, not her mom, ohhhh. Shes not dead...yet.
Okay, props to whoever desing this. So much water, its amazing.
Ohhh, and back to the begining, really nice circle.
Oh, toxic female friendships! Toxic female friendships!
Whoever sound-design this, please tell me your secrets.
Pagan Dupount, thats such a name. *A legacy must be paid*.
Wait, isnt Dupount also the name of the evil queen in miraculous? (Sorry).
Is Helen now going to be the Queen Bee? Jared is like "I have contacts".
As someone who loves the dark side of academia, I am in love with this. (Even if I still dont understand how fraternities work, like really, does anyone?).
7° Gavin's Window: Lost and Found
Right into the *ambience*.
"Is there a gift shop in the train station?" Asking the good question.
I really like how the sound design pulls you into the rttpg, like normally I dont listen to actual play or d&d stuff, but I think that this is a good getaway for me.
So Gavin is the GM. That is interesting.
Awww, I really like this candle story.
Uuuu, I want to know what Gavin saw. Are they human?
WAIT! POST CREDIT SCENE, POST CREDIT SCENE!!!

Safeguard Armor.
Magic Armor for Dungeons & Dragons 5e.
Tumblr media
The Chaos Den (a DnD5e podcast you should check out!) asked us to try our hand at creating some armor for one of their players, Gizmo. They're a giant tree (like Groot) and a Cleric, who fuses armor to their body. As such, they're not very good at Stealth.
We designed a few things for them, including this lighter armor that lets you feel a bit more like a tank in some circumstances.
Safeguard Armor
Armor (light or medium), rare
“This armor has several gems of varying types adorning the arms, shoulders, chest and back. Though they provide no additional benefits to defense, they are imbued with abjuration magic and arranged in such a way to provide magical protection that other armor of their type lacks.”
Whenever you cast a spell that grants a bonus to AC, the bonus increases by +2. Safeguard. When you are hit by an attack that deals non-magical slashing, piercing or bludgeoning damage, you can use your reaction to gain resistance to that damage type, including the triggering attack, until the start of your next turn.
Join us in Discord or on Twitch every Mon\Wed\Fri to create new D&D Homebrews like magic items, monsters, or subclasses. If you want to support Cloaks & Capes check out our Patreon for 622+ magic items, monsters, tokens, maps, and more for just $3\month.
We add over 30 new items a month.

Listening to the Light the Fuse podcast today and it’s honestly making me angry? Listening to TC and McQ talk about this movie and how much thought they put into it, but also at the same time how last minute and unplanned all of this was I’m so incredibly disappointed with this movie.
In Haylee Atwell’s episode she’s talking about TC and the car chase, and filming that it’s making me so frustrated because a new character didn’t deserve all of that. I don’t want a new character to steal Ethan’s screen time and ruin what should’ve been a fantastic car chase. Ethan was driving for less than a 90 seconds in this whole great big scene and it’s all just focused so much on Grace and her relationship with Ethan and I want to scream. I don’t like her one bit and this podcast is only making it worse.
They HAD a superb, wonderful, and beloved female lead we did not need her like that with Ethan. I am here for TC focused stunts and islaethan and that is all.
(and I’m also so incredibly disappointed we never got a single awesome stunt with RF and TC and HA got TWO??)

Last Monday of the Week 2023-07-24
Back in the saddle.
Listening: I am not a huge fan of true crime, not because I find the subject distasteful but because the way people go about it grates on me as an annoying blend of unrealistic fearmongering and misinformed wannabe vigilanteism. I do however also admit that I haven't really engaged with true crime in many years, so I asked my brother to recommend his favourite true crime podcast or whatever and he pitched me on My Favourite Murder.
Starting from E1, I've been through two or three episodes. Mostly my opinions continue to hold true, every now and again one of the hosts says something that is the kind of batshit thing normal people say about crime and it blows a fuse in my head. I will stick to it long enough to form a real opinion.
Reading: Finished Seven Surrenders, on the train back from Zurich, this morning. Once again I immediately want to start the next book, I'll probably buy The Will to Battle after this posts.
The world of Terra Ignota is so engaging to read about, it's big but with a tiny cast, futuristic and archaic. It must have been so hard to pull off these reveals and ideas without them just seeming kind of stupid because on the face of it, they are.
Watching: Nothing, I've been traveling until this morning.
Making: Made a cool tomato/chickpea/coconut curry based on Adam Ragusea's recipe, modified for scale, what I have available and my tastes, which included use canned chickpeas, frozen green beans, swapping tomatillos for small vine tomatoes, and working with my usual spice blends.
youtube
Oh, I also completely ignored the step of passing the sauce through a sieve because I've been eating the cheapest prepared bakery sandwiches I can find while traveling for the past week and I feel like I need to eat a lot of whole vegetables this week.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The application of very heavily browned vegetables is a nice trick, and with the addition of sugar and coconut cream makes for a very pleasant and rich flavour even though I kind of overshot the chili heat because I'm still not used to the extra-hot chili powder I have now.
Playing: Nothing, due to The Travel.
Tools and Equipment: I gotta pitch the 1kg or less laptop. I've mentioned Calcite, my personal laptop, plenty of times, but this past week of traveling has really shown how handy something this light is. Calcite complete with my 65W GaN charger and various dongles lived in my backpack as I hoofed it around several cities and it was so light that I barely noticed.
It's worth it to be able to use a full size computer when trying to compare accommodation and travel arrangements on the go, rather than trying to fiddle it out on a phone, but if your laptop weighs much more than a kilogram it can quickly become a slog to carry around.
Calcite is a 13 inch HP Envy x360, but the new 14-inch model and the HP Pavilion Aero 13's are both really good and relatively affordable compact laptops that I recommend frequently to people who want light laptops. Lenovo makes their 13 inch family of thinkpads but they're much more upmarket. If cost is no object there's of course ultralights like the LG Gram, and ultracompacts like the Onemix One Netbook 4.
If we're honest, an iPad would probably fit this role well, but I don't have one of those.

Con Man Coin Master! - EP12 of 20 - Tourist in Terrath
Will Bob be swindled by Menides?!
A greedy Lux bureaucrat, Coinmaster Menides controls the Imperium treasury. Pompous, opulent, and elitist, he is largely responsible for hastening the corruption of Lux culture, profiteering from hollow religious rituals and mandating strangling taxes on its honest people. Worshiping money over truth, he was instrumental in convincing the High Feather to exile Father Geno, inadvertently lighting the fuse of the Imperium Revolution. Hungry for power and prestige, he quietly saps the lifeblood of the Lux people for personal gain and would rather lord over a decaying culture than see his veiled scandals and secret allegiances come to light.

Going out with a bang: The best and worst of season 7 of Voyager
by Ames
Tumblr media
The final season of Voyager wraps things up nicely for the crew that’s traveled 70,000 light years to get home. You can tell that the whole arc of season 7 is culminating with the arrival back home as we get more and more glimpses of Starfleet in the Alpha Quadrant, the episodes start to really show the growth of the characters over the course of the show, and things start feeling more and more final.
So come in for a soft landing with us here at A Star to Steer Her By as we ignite the fireworks fuses to light up our best and worst picks from the season. You’ll see a good mix of ooh’s and aah’s below, as well as some explosive accidents that regrettably went off in the middle of a crowd. Set your sights below or listen to the bangs over on the podcast (jump to 1:09:39 for the season chatter), featuring some audio-exclusive picks from guest star Liz. Oo, sparkly!
Top Three Episodes
Somehow, we had a lot of agreement for pretty much this whole season, so both our tops and bottoms lists are going to be quite short. Here are the episodes that piqued our fancy:
Tumblr media
“Endgame”: Chris Let’s start at the end, as we are wont to do on this podcast. And the end, overall, is pretty good as an episode! There’s Borg Queen, there’s time travel, there’s Klingons. What’s not to like? But what really stands out is the Janeway-Janeway dynamic, as we’ve seen before that Kate Mulgrew has really great chemistry with herself. It’s a wonder to behold.
Tumblr media
“The Void”: Jake While this episode might be a little similar to “The Time Trap” from The Animated Series, is that such a bad thing? We get to see Janeway start up her own little mini-Federation in this space pocket and things really pay off! Score one for upholding your idealistic worldview for a change! Plus Jonathan Del Arco as Fantome is just too cute for words.
Tumblr media
“Author, Author”: Caitlin There’s a lot going on in this episode, and all the individual pieces are actually quite thought-provoking. From the doctor’s fanfic episode depicting his plight throughout the show, to the crew’s amazing depictions of their caricaturey selves, to the “Measure of a Man”–style debate about the rights of an artificial being (dang, that’s topical), there’s some good discussions to be had here.
Tumblr media
“Shattered”: Ames, Chris This episode could easily have made it onto our Best Time Travel Episodes list if we’d thought to include it. The conceit of having the ship split up into different eras is just so damn clever and allows for a lot of fun references to past episodes without feeling forced. “Shades of Grey,” take note: this is how you do a clipshow in science fiction.
Tumblr media
“Critical Care”: Ames, Caitlin, Jake EMH at his best. While it’s a trend that the Doctor’s personality has gradually turned toxic by this season (more on that below), putting him in a situation clearly in his wheelhouse is a strength. The moral debate of how to treat patients with different treatment coefficients is such a smooth allegory for medical ethics disparities today. It makes you angry. It makes you start connecting the dots. This is what science fiction is for!
Tumblr media
“Homestead”: Ames, Caitlin, Chris, Jake The one on all of our tops list is one that you would never have expected if you’ve been following along since the first season. Your hosts here at SSHB have grown to be such great fans of Neelix (some of us more slowly than others) because of his consistent writing, his profound character development that builds upon his traumatic backstory, and of course his excellent portrayal by Ethan Phillips. And this episode sends him off in such a touching fashion it brings a tear to your eye. Go Neelix!
Bottom Three Episodes
But not everything from this season is sparklers and champagne. There were also some icky missteps, missed opportunities, and true bombs along the way home. Grab the first aid kit; these are going to sting:
Tumblr media
“Flesh and Blood”: Chris While there’s a lot of good fun to be had in a hologram revolution, this two-parter faceplanted on the landing. Making Iden into some kind of megalomaniacal nutjob utterly compromised the point of an episode that should have been about freedom, the rights of workers, and difficult choices in where your loyalties lie. The way Iden took power so fascistically took the easy way out by negating those conflicts.
Tumblr media
“Drive”: Ames, Caitlin I try to be a big Tom Paris defender on this podcast (like in my defense of “Threshold,” which I still stand by), but boy howdy, does Tom blow it in this episode. The way out of an argument is NOT by proposing to your girlfriend at the spur of the moment. I’m no relationship counselor, but that sounds like the worst time to go making lifelong commitments. Try listening to her first, flyboy. Sometimes you make it really hard to defend you.
Tumblr media
“Renaissance Man”: Ames, Caitlin I am so utterly confused by this episode. The whole thing feels like it deflates at the end when we realize the Doctor really only had step one of a plan underway and everything else just happened by coincidence. He’s cleverer than that! He outwitted every member of the crew, but he couldn’t outwit two turd people? And that ending love declaration to Seven is just gross and makes me not like him anymore.
Tumblr media
“Body and Soul”: Ames, Jake Speaking of the EMH being gross, this episode is just a full 45 minutes of cringe. Sure, Jeri Ryan is nailing it every moment, but the takeaway we get is that the Doctor shows no remorse for nonconsensually exploiting Seven’s body, it’s really all Seven’s own fault for never indulging, and she’s the one who apologizes at the end? Doc, I rescind putting you on my Ideal Bridge Crews list. Pulaski all the way.
Tumblr media
“Nightingale”: Chris, Jake Sure, it’s a running gag among Trekkies that Ensign Kim never gets a promotion, but I never realized it seemed to be so present on the show as well! If you ever wondered why Harry is our forever-ensign, look no further than this episode in which he’s given a taste of command and fails so spectacularly I’m surprised he had any pips left at all. You did Harry dirty, episode. Real dirty.
Tumblr media
“Natural Law”: Caitlin, Chris, Jake Finally, one long Prime Directive debate that wasted way too much time with portraying some noble savage tropes and didn’t leave enough room for the actually interesting part! It’s so late in the episode that the Ledosian surveyors get into the Ventu bubble that we really only glossed over the cultural contamination of it all. Oh, and Chris reminds us that he hates Kleg the flying instructor for reasons.
All that’s left now is our full series retrospectives, and hey, they’re both out already! Check out our Top 5 Voyager Episodes and Bottom 5 Voyager Episodes lists as we wrap up our journey and get ready to move onto the next era in our show watching. Follow along wherever we take you over on SoundCloud or wherever you get your podcasts, raise your glasses with us over on Facebook and Twitter, and stop being gross to Seven!

Hi, I’m that new anon you replied to with the mcq explanation. Just wanted to say that that’s absolute nonsense! And thank you for the quotes
Haha! I agree! Doesn’t make much sense to me either, but I wanted to be true to the source and give you his own words:) Due to the strike Rebecca can’t give interviews at the moment but I think the plan was to get her on Light the Fuse Podcast discussing this, so we will see what she might add to his words. Prior to strike she had one interview where it seemed like she was not very happy with how her storyline went in this film *sighs*
