The last song that was written, the last lyrics that were written was (for) the song “Hooked.” It starts off with the line, “I’ve got the fear / I’ve got the human fear.” And I realize that so many of the songs had an underlying theme of fear to them. But not necessarily succumbing to fear, but more like overcoming fear. “The Doctor” is about the fear of leaving an institution, and “Bar Lonely” is the fear of leaving a relationship. “Night or Day” is the fear of committing to a relationship. But fear is fascinating because fear is universal. We all experience fear. We all experience the same fears. But how we respond to it is individual. And that’s how we find who we are, our personalities. And overcoming fear feels good. That’s why we watch horror films or ride rollercoasters — because you overcome fear and then feel very alive for having done so.

i try to avoid pretension bc people who are smug about dumb shit make me mad but i do feel good about having no spotify no netflix no disney plus no streaming services other than tvnz on demand (completely free) and arovision (supports the last remaining film library in aotearoa) and the dvds/cds at the public library and when i listen to music its almost always on cds on my discman or albums ive bought off bandcamp. if i have to i listen to music on youtube but my adblocker is good so i never get ads. and i literally never feel like im missing out on anything and i save so much money and the money i do spend is going straight to libraries and individual artists and the occasional opshop. like idk man people seem to be very reliant on slop websites charging them increasingly high fees to feed them more and more ads and i simply do not experience this and i want you to know that its actually very possible for YOU to experience peace serenity and more money in the bank as well. its not even hard. take my hand🖐️ come with me the wonderful world of not giving money to billionaires and never watching another ad again in your life

garden life is such a vortex of a song. because it’s all cute and moody and then you look deeper and apply some basic logic to the lyrics. like. you feel less alive than when staring out of a window when doing anything else? you’re resigned to shaping yourself around the feeling your loved one creates? life in full bloom can be captured in ones and zeroes, what is this, a simulation? you’re chilling and dreaming together. on and on. and then. what comes after me? after the weeping willow metabolises the alcohol running through its system? sorry, we cant listen to an assortment of 2-5 minute songs in the car like usual, we have to listen to this 44 minute long autobiographical song ive been listening to almost exclusively for the past week

idk whats a better situation for lord huron existing as a band in their own universe:

being some mysterious cosmic force/spirits that both metaphorically and literally haunt the Whispering Pines studio playing all these songs as a way of capturing/reliving the stories that created them for a reason we will never fully understand

something i realized this weekend while listening to ttpd was how much she felt like these two relationships failing was her fault — if she had been the mastermind, why couldn’t she MAKE it work? in fresh out the slammer alll of the language she uses is about making sure she doesn’t fuck it up again — “now that i know better i will never lose my baby again” — and, obviously, being in prison implies you committed crimes that earned you jail time. BUT, what she realizes by the end of the album, is that she’s not in control, and that’s not a failing on her part, that’s just true to the nature of life. going from the ways she can force something to work at the beginning of the album to “please change the prophecy” to finally surrendering her story at the end of the manuscript. she couldn’t have forced them to work, she just did the best she could do
