#My art#Handplates#UT#Papyrus#I have not been able to get this idea out of my head for like - days now lol#It's only solidified the more I read! I'm partial to the English cover but I like the original as well :)#There are just so many fun lyrics! Especially for Papyrus specifically#''Everything I've been told I believe and yet people that I love just leave'' Gasterrr#''I think I'm old enough to understand so there's no reason to hide from me'' Sanssssssss#Once I returned to the scene of Sans trying to lie to him I just fjdslahfd these lyrics would Not leave me alone lol#I'm also Extremely partial to the second verse surrounding blindness and willful ignorance - his vision problems literal and metaphorical!#I wasn't planning to start a Handplates playlist but I guess by this point it's kinda too late haha#I also tried a different style of shading for this one ā™Ŗ Trying to style match a bit hehe#It's fun! Scratchy - tho some of that is from still using my usual brushes lol#I was Very inspired by watching the comic creation playlist - so cool! Very fun to watch and pick up ideas hehe#I knew I forgot something lol dang it - forgot the dash between WDG-2#S'what I get for using pre-plates references :P#For just a quick little thing I'm fairly pleased overall tho :)

skully who r u [fae skully + a ramble on his possible background]
we have less than a day before we get the ending for this event and IM. NOT READY. im not ready to hear about how skully is a person from the past (and we're thinking 200 years or so), nor am i ready to go back to twst to hear that he's dead in our time and he's really the founder of modern halloween that nrc celebrates
... that's assuming he's human tho
and fortunately or unfortunately, there's hints that twst has been dropping that leads us to think otherwise
firstly: ears WHERE
Tumblr media
in his live2D, you dont get to see his ears At All. not even a hint of an ear lobe. we know twst to be very detailed and deliberate with their designs so why did they choose to hide his ears
in his illustration, u can see a hint of an earlobe, but it's still very much covered
Tumblr media
and as we know, when we look at malleus and lilia ears, we Know that they have pointy ears marking their pure fae ancestry. soooo skully..????? šŸ¤Ø fae skully real?????
i partly market the fae skully agenda bc PLS. WHAT IF... MEET . . .. .. IN OUR TIME. .. .. .. .... . PLS... . ... . .. . ..... šŸ„ŗ WE SEE HIM ALIVE BUT A LIL OLDER AND WAUGHHHHHHHHHHHHH pls i cant handle this yall
secondly: there is still that part in Episode 1-4 of skully saying to us "moshi... ne, moshi" instead of "moshimoshi", and a lot of ppl shared that the belief of supernatural beings not being able to address someone more than once is at play here. which would at least indicate to us that skully is at least not ur regular human being. and that is one thing about skully that we Can be sure about
on what skully may be, myonmyon put out a thread about how skully may be at least inspired by the Fear Gorta, a fae whose folklore was created from the irish famine. it's characterized by a skeletal appearance who wears tatters and rags. it can be benevolent or malevolent, but if u treat it kindly, it will bestow good blessings upon you. Fear Gorta also refers to Hungry Grass, which, if one steps on a cursed patch of grass (which i assume the fae created), they will always be hungry, no matter how much they eat, and will eventually die from starvation
ok why the irish famine? myonmyon and a few other theorists on twitter have speculated on skully possibly being inspired by (or maybe even being the twst equivalent of) the irish immigrants who moved to america, and from there, the tradition of halloween spread, resulting in the modern halloween that we know of today. it makes sense too given skully's character of spreading halloween to his fellow peers, who don't know what halloween is
oh but i don't mean to end this post here, no not yet. because there's a really interesting thread that i also found by Y_wwwsomething about how skully even got his viewpoint of halloween. i do like this thread because they kinda argue against skully's halloween being based on samhain, which a lot of people initially thought that that was his halloween. but samhain, even if it does have its scary side, is still a festival with feasting and noise, still very unlike skully's halloween. if anything, they suggested that the briar valley halloween is much closer to samhain.
my personal conclusion was that skully's halloween is based on all hallow's eve, and he's from a catholic family who celebrates halloween in a solemn manner. however, this thread is suggesting that skully idolizes the victorian british gentlemen and consequently the victorian halloween
let's look into the victorian halloween first. we note that the victorian halloween that was celebrated was often done by the upper class. several online sources will tell you that their halloween parties is, funnily enough, purposed for matchmaking. many halloween games involved girls looking into their futures, whether it's eating apples at midnight while looking at the mirror or looking at whatever object is in their apple or cake to see if they'll marry or die alone. halloween for them is less focused on fright and more on lover's passion.
however! their halloween parties are also dramatic in that they turn off the lights and only leave candles on, and when they greet guests, it's either by putting their own hand on the guest's shoulder or a glove filled with sawdust.
so we could have a situation here where skully, just like jack with christmas, may have observed one (1) party and misunderstood the victorian halloween, taking from it only the scary aspect and mixing it with any prior beliefs he may have had. it doesn't yet explain why he spent halloween alone, and tbh the catholic halloween celebration alone is already a near exact match of skully's definition of halloween, so im not very on board with this. could be that they are also loose enough to be festive? but im not sure
but im very interested about skully's possible reverence for the british gentlemen, which inspired his love for jack skellington! in the victorian era, they were defined by their birth (so if they were born to aristocratic parents), but men could also make themselves into gentlemen by growing their wealth and influence. some men have occupations that are respected enough to call them gentlemen (i.e. army members, members of the parliament). eventually the definition of a gentleman is one who received education from certain elite universities, but this is towards the end of the victorian era, so when trying to become a gentleman back then, it was much harder. so of course men tried to climb to become gentlemen. charles dickens actually wished to be recognized as a gentleman and so he wrote about it in great expectations.
and this is what interests me: during the irish famine, it's noted that british rule still stood on ireland, and if anything, the british elite even worsened the irish famine as they controlled trade between them. irish goods were exported out to britain and other countries while the people had nearly nothing, which either killed them off or pushed them to migrate. interestingly, british penal laws had it that irish catholics especially were suppressedā€”among their laws included that their land and home were confiscated by the british parliamentary officials in ireland
so what am i trying to get at here? it's that there's probably a nonzero chance that skully looked up to the gentlemen of britain... or if we're thinking in twst terms, the gentlemen of the queendom of roses. and this may be influenced by whatever was going on in his hometown, whether it's something akin to the irish famine and colonization or something else. a desire to be free? a desire to be more than what he is right now? it would very much be similar to sally and jack: sally, in how she wanted to be free from dr. finkelstein's controlling parenting, and jack in how he wanted to not just be the pumpkin king and tried to take over christmas. it also sort of mirrors leona's and jamil's desires for themselves too, how they want to be free to do the things they want to do and make an impact around them
what's even yummier is considering that if skully is a fae, or at least a nonhuman creature that has a distinctive ear shape, then he might take shame in his fae nature as he may perceive that the ideal gentleman is a human, which is similar to how sebek takes shame in his human nature. hence, his ears would be covered by his hair in order to hide this and mingle among the gentlemen.
anyway. idk how i went from "skully is a fae" to "skully is probably an irish catholic suppressed by the british colonial rule and wants to social climb hence he looks up to the ideal british gentleman, sees jack skellington in that image, and aims to be like that so that he can make something out of himself" but we ball ig
anyway, im cooked for tomorrow, im not ready yall :(

instead of taking the fact that they only showed certain parts of the metatron and aziraphale talking to mean that aziraphale is omitting information. consider that those scenes are there instead to support what aziraphale is saying and prove that he's telling the truth. u feel me

Ive seen the lie theory and the coffee theory (bad) but what I think REALLY happened was that everything played out as it seems until the elevator. So Metatron makes his offer, they have the argument, Aziraphale has second thoughts (LITERALLY almost says "I think I've made a mistake"). Metatron definitely knew that Crowley could never accept and did that on purpose to break them up, because he was intimidated that together they could perform such a strong miracle at the beginning of the season, and he knew that together they would foil Heaven's next plan. But anyway I think when Aziraphale is standing outside the elevator and hears about the second coming and his face drops, in that moment he KNOWS he fucked up. He knows that it would be a mistake to go back to Heaven. But he still gets in the elevator because in that moment, he determines to be the man on the inside for the "group of the two of them." I think now he intends to act like he wants to be the supreme archangel, but as soon as he finds out what the plan is with the second coming, he's going straight to Crowley so they can stop it. Evidence for this is the way his face DROPS when he hears Metatron say the second coming, and that slow sideways look he shoots Crowley right afterwards, not of longing or indecision but of fear. His last look to Crowley isn't tearful but wide-eyed and wary, like the look you give your friend across the room to signal that something is wrong. So that's my theory.

Makima, devils and self-fulfillment
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dumping some Makima and CSM thoughts after a part 1 binge bc I think about her forever and ever. Iā€™m sure Iā€™m forgetting some devil lore, feel free to correct what i get wrong/whatā€™s been confirmed. On the table of contents thereā€™s why & how Makima got fixated on Chainsaw, her revealing liking for the country mouse and discussion of her nature & emotions & desires. Was the scorpion doomed to be a scorpion?
The most of this post was thought of during a conversation with @saccharineomens and I donā€™t think it makes sense to jump into the spiral it sent me on without first laying down the interesting groundwork theorizing she did:
"Thinking about how makima herself wants to be deified. I wonder whether she recognizes the difference between Love As Worship and the love that Aki, Power, and Denji had. She says she wants to help humanity by having Chainsawman eat the ā€œbadā€ devils, but why does she want to help humans? Because she was ordered to by the Prime Minister? No, her drive seems much more personal than that, it seems like she teamed up with the PM for contractual reasons. (In the most recent chapters we see governmental members wanting certain devils to be eaten, too. What was Makimaā€™s relationship with them? Sheā€™s too independent to just follow THEIR orders, sheā€™s Control.)
So is she wanting to better humanity for the accolades, or out of the goodness of her heart? She sees the big picture. She sees any small sacrifice as worth it for the end result, and sheā€™s ruthless. Perhaps she thinks that a more sedate human race would be easier to control? But Makima doesnā€™t loathe humanity. She never acts like she sees all humans as lesser. She loves humanityā€™s creations, like good food and movies. She just wants Good Things all the time
She says she prefers the country mouse BUT adds a story where she helps exterminate country mice like vermin. She likes the simplicity yet rejects the idea of being simple. Makima the complex individual you are"
~
The story itself seems to prefr the country mouse. Well- it strikes a balance, shows that a risk to live good & fully can be very worth it, but still that stability over ambition is preferable, proning having a simple happy life over fame, a simple job instead of a dangerous one, etc etc. And I do find Makimaā€™s answer on this so so interesting, she prefers the country mouse, but this preference isnā€™t out of affection or sympathy but because of how relaxing it feels to exterminate them when they cause problems.
Order satisfies her. Her order satisfies her. She likes the action of rooting out disorder. Maybe this is the devil part, like how Power especially wants blood and drinking it, I feel thereā€™s an itch to every devil, and for Makima itā€™s a very rigid world view/morality/standards & making things follow her rules and submit to her order.
And maybe this is why sheā€™s attached to humans too, why she felt it was worth it to stick with the government- because devils are chaotic by nature (itā€™s a whole plot point that hell is essentially a free-for-all battleground for example), meanwhile humans are the species that universally rule Earth with systems they invented and instilled. They made then enforced rules, complex and intricate webs of them. She feels alienated amongst devils but she understands the humansā€™ need for an orderly organised society, and now she wants to be part of it. Control and conquest require social dynamics after all, requires civilizations or groups. War is chaotic while peace is, well, peacefulā€” Makima resents her sisters for being death, famine and war, things that throw the world in such chaos. She wants a world of perfect order, no matter how much collateral damage there will be if the end result is control.
This is even more interesting if you consider that yes, Makima is untouchable of her own design, she deifies herself with her omnipresent amount of control and the sway over others that she seeks and encouragesā€” There is this urge to dehumanize her for it, that yes, she is the devil of control and that means she was never going to be any different, have any more feeling be any less uncanny. And I love part 2 so much for this, because it shows us the war devil and the famine devil and we see how frankly uncharismatic with poor self-discipline they are, Nayuta too, and it helps us realize just how much Makimaā€™s success was self-made.
She admires Chainsaw Devil, the Hero of Hell, because he had his own code and his own rules and he made Hell, the chaos pit, submit to them unfailingly. Wherever he goes he decides what he does and what happens to the people he encounters but does so consistently, he has his mechanism and his rules that he always obeys, and he fulfills them every time. Itā€™s still a mystery the why of Chainsaw Devilā€™s behavior back then and how it works exactly, maybe Pochita left hell because he was tired of these rules he lived by like chains, but still, he was a servant to his code. Makima would have been glad being killed and eaten by Chainsaw Devil because itā€™d have been becoming part of his design, his conquest, his domination, sheā€™d have been part of that ā€”hisā€” order. Through her death she would be shaping his world and be part of a conquerorā€™s making history. Like how she appreciates the country mice that die for the sake of order. Like how sacrifices must be made to herself, like listing the name of every person whose life was lost to the Gun Devilā€” All for the ~greater good~, for her vision for the world. Conquest always thinks its reasons are justified.
Tumblr media
And she does mention with the country mice thing that she goes out to a friendā€™s farm every year! She has a human friend?? That she visits yearly and she genuinely likes it?? Ultimately she lives a busy city life because of her goal and drive and her urge & satisfaction with overseeing shaping the world herself, but part of her, like so many characters including Angel and Aki and Reze, wishes she could live a slow peaceful country life. Moviegoing and dogs and mice in a farm- Wouldnā€™t it be so much simpler if Makima could find fulfillment and happiness in being a farmer, in keeping control of her own farm, getting satisfaction from exterminating vermin and expertly getting everything right, the right crops grown at the right time on the right soil? Here, too, in a way itā€™s trying to have full control of an ecosystem, but her goals would be easier to achieve and better, without ceaseless sacrifice or much pressure. But Makima wants grandiosity and her goal does matter to her on a fundamental and moral level, she does think she knows whatā€™s best for the world, and with the power to change it why wouldnā€™t she strive to? Visiting the farm is just a break, just something she does in fall to help out and just in time to see the vermin extermination. It calms her, then itā€™s back to actual work.
In capitalism, even the one at the very top of the ladder is ultimately alienated from others and often unsatisfied by their lifestyle, always wanting more and more power because surely thatā€™s the extra edge they must be missing to be contentā€” like how Makima thinks she wants to dominate Chainsaw Devil instead of being his equal. And she says it herself too, she likes humans the way humans like dogsā€¦ā€¦.. And she keeps so many dogs :( Makima prefers the country mice because theyā€™re calming to root out, maybe because she usually mainly deals with city mice. Itā€™s very easy to equate humans to the mice in this allegory because itā€™s pretty direct and sheā€™s already likened humans to lesser animals compared to her. Sheā€™s self-isolating by design for her design but she still craves relationships and contentment, and the dogs are the embodiment or her want for bonds and occasional simplicity because there is no possible ulterior motive, no way they tie back into her wider plan. Theyā€™re her personal lifeā€” something that feels so alien when speaking about Makima. Personality and individuality and likes and preferences and friends they visit every year. She likes how easily she can train a dog and how they become putty in her hands, at her beck and call, how much they love her and how much she enjoys their love. How simple and straightforward and easy it is. She keeps them because she likes being loved by them and loving them, and sheā€™s gotten and raised so many. A conqueror always wants more and more and more, is never satisfied.
Devils and agency
Tumblr media
Like Power the blood devil wanting blood and having a fixation on drinking it like with Denjiā€™s, or how it was shocking that the violence devil was pretty tame and nice and how he himself theorized it was because he was a fiend and possessing a human bodyā€¦ Thereā€™s something to be said about nature vs nurture with the devils. The way they reincarnate and always embody their fear makes it seem categorically like nature, that they always always end up fulfilling the role they were named after and born to fillā€¦ Outside influence theyā€™re helpless but to conform with. Like the humans accepting their spot in the social ladder and the shittiness of their living conditions and job under capitalism. Makima craved being equals with someone despite being the control/conquest devil, Angel Devil despite claiming to be a devil who likes to see humans dying was haunted by their deaths and wanted to avoid ones like Akiā€™s. The Ghost Devil being ironically haunted by Himeno, seemingly helping Aki in her memory out ofā€¦ Lasting affection? Or maybe it was less about being haunted itself and more about it recognizing how Himeno haunted Aki, and acknowledging that, with the memento, paying her respect to the ghost of her. Itā€™s Angel Devilā€™s devil nature that makes him like human suffering, so then is it his angel nature too to still care about their deaths? Is there truth to this or is that just personality, just our confirmation bias haunting every part of their identity like it might in their own view of themselves too? We do know different reincarnations of devils do have different personalities after all.
Yoru, war devil, is the most interesting one when talking about the nature vs nurture debate with devils. There is how through her we see the perhaps the most the consequences of a devil stopping being fearedā€” we see a horseman for a concept as universal and horrifying as war be reduced to some bird who needs a contract with a human to have any power even just on the situation when meeting Asa. And through the story we get to know her better, and it becomes clear that her goal is fueled in good part by simply wanting to be remembered and respected through fear. Liked, validated, seen a powerful. But what is more isolating than war? Or control? We also see Nayuta accepting othersā€™ house rules. If part 1 shows perhaps the futility of running away from the truth, with Denjiā€™s memory, with escapist coping mechanisms, with passivity and denial under a corrupt system and with abusive relationships- running away from your own feelings and from the reality of things and from all that you are, more complex than simply human or devil or both or neitherā€” part 2 builds upon the theme of cult of personalities, the chainsaw church, etc. The apocalypse is coming, but this celebrity superhero might save us all, or doom us all uh, dunno. The hero of hell reliving the cycle of pressure from responsibilities and expectations, maybe the part will end with Denji running away like Pochita did~
But yes, on the reverse, I think Famine is a very interesting example of how a devilā€™s namesake may be more innate than coerced by circumstances. One would think that a famine devil would only like inflicting famine upon others, not being famished itself, but Famine has a bottomless stomach that can never, ever be satisfied, sated. I struggle to find a psychological explanation for this, except that maybe instead of her being hungry itā€™s her feeling empty when sheā€™s not eating, tasting and having that high sensory experience that releases serotonin in humans, sort of like drugs? But I do take this as a step towards the compulsion theory overall, feels like a reach in the consistency otherwise. And compulsion does not mean itā€™s something that they like nor that itā€™s something that they fight against, pretty neutral, just a nature that nudges you towards one path. Maybe itā€™s even just their go-to for entertainment. Maybe itā€™s the only thing that makes them feel right and whole. But still the debate remains, what is it, a compulsion or an urge or an itch or an active desire or a conscious chosen want? Does it change anything in practice?
And because of all of this earlier, devils being self-fulfilling prophecies with their role is not in unsignificant part nurture, because doing their atrocities is how they stay rememberedā€” feared, powerful, knownā€” hell and devils are a very isolating place and breed after all, and we do see devils can want companionship. Existentially, itā€™s their purpose and how they justify their place in the world, in the terrifyingly vast and unknowable cosmos.
We still know so little of what makes Chainsaw Devil so special, why his carnage is so self-controlled. Despite a chainsaw maybe being possibly one of the most "nature" thing you can beā€” a tool to cut things, a human tool that can be helpful for many things, something to be wielding by another at their judgement on what they decide, but mainly something to cut, a tool suited for carnage, to hurt and to destroy. A blade with a toothed chain, spinning around and around and around endlessly on the same road at the same pace. Such aā€¦. Innately circular concept. And yet the Chainsaw Devil is his own, not driven by an urge or by chaos but his very own brand of order, his own unique assigned purpose, a "if you call iā€™ll come running to help" policy equalizing everyone. He chooses to withhold his destruction and interference otherwise, and then he chooses to be used. If itā€™s a choice, of course.
Maybe this is what inspired Makima so much, that Chainsaw Devil could decide what to make of himself despite expectations or innate role. Because even Hell he decided & managed to subjugate under his will and whim, with a precise vision and process. When Chainsaw Devil acts like Denji or is defeated, Makima clicks her tongue and loses her admiration and respect. Makima admired and liked Chainsaw Devil, but only as long as he matched her great image of him in her mind, as long as he followed he rules for what she thinks he should be like. She admired him for his unrivaled self-made success, but once he stepped out of that to truly embody self-fulfillment and agency, disappearing from hell to live on his own road at the beat of his own drumā€¦ Well. Surely that was a mistake she has to correct. However their second battle ends, the better conqueror will have prevailed and sheā€™s happy about that, all in the spirit of domination and subjugation.
Imo Makimaā€™s biggest tool, similarly capitalismā€™s most helpful effect for its own purposes, is complacency. Resignation and passivity helps uphold the system and go along the flow of the will of the people in power. Aki and Reze go along with orders even when knowing their job is trash, etc. In Angel Devil especially we see him go along with the flow uncaring about anyhing, and we discover it was in part due to Makima taking away memories that motivated him. If every devil decides this is just how things are and how things should be thatā€™s what theyā€™ll continue to be and do mindlessly, not pursuing a better life like Chainsaw Devil and Denj and not seeking to change the world like Makima. I think even Makima veils herself to a lot of things, she doesnā€™t like to think deeply about some things, like her desire for connection, or how making bad movies disappear is strenuous and unsustainable and requiring sacrifices at bestā€” how her judgement is as subjective as anyone else. How liking the country mouse and her friend back at the farm and her dogs could be not devoid of sentimality. Wanting bad movies erased is her one biggest show of selfishness, of pettiness and individuality, itā€™s about her tastes, simple as. About how she can have tastes, and cry seeing a scene of people hug, and want things that arenā€™t logical, her ideology and mind twisted into a pretzel to avoid acknowledging that she doesnā€™t live and breathe purely for the mission sheā€™s made a single-minded robot out of herself to accomplish. Nayuta is assertive and selfish and loud, Makima is manipulative and strategically both for her goals and for coping hollow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Everything in her plans and goals she says is for the greater good, necessary evil, manufactured happiness the way sheā€™ll have decided for peopleā€” and thatā€™s the thing isnā€™t it, like with War, itā€™s the crack that shows it was all truly about herself after all. Her self-made deification still had the flaw that a self made it. Makima is not omniscient, and itā€™s not Chainsaw Devil the not-so-fellow-kindred-soul conqueror who gets the best of her, but a city mouse, a dog, someone she would have never thought to respect, Denji.
#Fumi rambles#Chainsaw man#makima#analysis#meta#The goal is moreso me dropping thoughts than being flawless on every aspect of the lore so if and when i get things wrong b mercifulā€¦.#Maybe her liking of control is why she remembers the ww2 authoritarian fascists. I donā€™t want to say the word jic for tumblr search#Pity is never a factor When mercy is a sign of a talentless actor#And as you grow its hold on your throat starts to falter And once you go beyond pure humanity's border#You will come back like a dooooog šŸ˜#Thisā€™d be a different topic but. I donā€™t think makima likes denji as much as one of her dogs. If so iā€™d say it was in the moments where#she brought him to movies but even thenā€¦.. i think she has more fondness for her dogs bc w denji it was indifference and derision#I love you please humiliate me / strip my dignity and laugh my honey#God. God iā€™m fine. Iā€™m so okay about csm#Makima has a cryptic but strong sense of morals?? That doesnā€™t align with ours obvi but#ā€˜Someone like you has no right to wish for a normal life do they?ā€™ What do you meannn what do you meannnnn#What is this contempt for denji. Does she see herself as moral or part of those that are city mice bc theyā€™re undeserving of a calm life???#Maybe famine only feels fed on humans and their blood šŸ¤” or their fear. man idk idk idk idk but i wanna see more of her quirks#And before someone says ā€˜but every demon likes to drink bloodā€™ power is especially fixated on it tho cmannnn#Did Angel lie when he said he liked seeing humans die?? Did his haunting thing become worse after meeting Aki?? Did he suppress it#because he feels like he doesnā€™t belong as a devil??? bc heā€™s suppressing his memories of the villagers he cared about??#Has he just been trying so hard not to care for so long. Passive bc he thought thatā€™s all he could or should be#AGHHHHH#Spoilers#Thereā€™s a lot more iā€™d have liked to touch on like the popular theory that Makima was *raised* by the government#and iā€™ve seen a take that the ā€˜my friend at a farmā€™ thing is all euphemism from makima about her troublesome human killing job ykyk#but i think the phrasing is too literal and natural for that. The snow and soil talk everything. Itā€™s a perfect allegory but it can be both

Tbh Im just thinking of something that im really curious and doesnt let me asleep. What was cdream planing to do once he was inside the prison? Bc if it was just contain the revival book then...why he had the plan to not stay too long in there? cpunz kinda implies the plan was meeting soon after cdream was imprisionated when they reunited post prison break. So what was his plan? the little we see of cdream in prison before he kills ctommy was him just passing around the cell and getting bored and starting to be starved by csam. Was it a plan to united the server, stay imprisoned a few weeks and then come out acting as if he changed? well that'd make sense, also could explain why he insisted so much in that he changed or leave forever even with people he and everyone knew wouldnt buy that at all like ctommy or csam after ctechno escape. But that stills makes me uneasy bc he didnt try that much. He didnt try to act like he was "reformed"(meaning as what the server expected to him to act if he reformed not in a way saying imprisoment is a was okay or acceptable way to help someone), he tells ctommy he burned the books when ctommy asked him to write novels as a way to say sorry.
Im just thinking what was he planned to do inside the prison? just stay there and rot for an indeterminaded amount of time? idk if the "contain the revival book" as his only motive fits bc then why he seemed to have planned with cpunz to meet soon and also planned that cranboo explodes tnt to trap a visitor with him? And the "trying to act as if he changed" while it makes more sense to me, it also doesnt convince me 100% for what I just said. Maybe a combination of the two? it could be, a person can have multiple reasons to do something. But idk, what do you think was cdream plan once he was inside the prison?
-Cleo
That is The question isnā€™t it -Why put himself in prison?
And the thing is I canā€™t really give you a definitive answer because we just donā€™t know. There are lots of variables and we just donā€™t have enough data to determine the answer, especially when we donā€™t even get his pov or get to see 80% of his lore. The best I can give you is my theory on why I personally think he did it, which I have talked about [here], based on the information we do have and assuming heā€™s not completely crazy, and is following some form of logical plan, however flawedā€¦
For starters, one of the things we do reasonably know based on the amount of times it comes up including the finale is his larger desire and motivation - "Always the goal has just been that it's all one united server, that everybody follows the same rules, there's no countries there's no, you know, any of this it's just one giant like family." [clip], ā€œI want everyone to live and be happy togetherā€ forever [clip], (after spending time in Dreamā€™s head we get Tommy saying) ā€œYou just want things to be simple.ā€ [clip] and then of course -> ā€œI just donā€™t want to ever be alone.ā€ [clip]
Thatā€™s the base line - Dream does not want to be alone, he craves community and family, a world where everyone is happy and together.
So keeping that in mind, for starters I donā€™t think he did it to ā€œcontain the revival bookā€ and honestly Iā€™m not even sure where that reasoning came from, I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever seen it and it really doesnā€™t even work as you point out, one reason being that Dreamā€™s stay was meant to be temporary.
I also donā€™t think the reasoning of uniting the server works either because for starters the whole server isnā€™t even present for his arrest and the ones who are there werenā€™t necessarily big enemies before that. Besides technically he already did a better job uniting people against him during Doomsday. Now maybe that was a side bonus or goal but I donā€™t think itā€™s the main reasoning.
But yes, I do think it was a means to be seen as reformed or less of a threat by the server. I go into some of that reasoning in my other post. I think it was about providing a pathway to him not being enemy number 1 anymore. Because people had been rallying against him even in a time of mostly peace with the biggest example being Lā€™manberg planning to assassinate him in cold blood in the Green Festival. Everyone was against him, even his friends and everyone lived in such fear and hatred of him no one would even hear him out. I mean I think the dethronement conversation is a great example of this (I provide a good bit of transcript in this [post]). Everything he said was seen as unreasonable and malicious and he was left alone with no way to mend these relationships. Everyone wanted him dead, but he didnā€™t want to die and while he could just leave to protect himself, we know he didnā€™t want to be alone, so instead his made a plan to a path of him being redeemed in the eyes of the server.
That was the plan right. Everyone defeats their villain, gets their revenge, but instead of him ending up dead like they wanted he is alive in prison and now that heā€™s stripped of his power, fear is more removed allowing for relationships. No longer is he this unstoppable evil overseer but just a person. Or so was I think his intention. They would keep him in there for a bit, realize not everything is his fault, that he isnā€™t this big evil tyrant, get their satisfied comeuppance and then people would let him out. Consider Badā€™s reaction to visiting Dream [post] - heā€™s done bad things but he deserves better than to suffer - that is a whole different reaction than the person willing to have him murdered completely - dead forever - by Tommy a few days prior.
Anyways, if that was his goal, then why didnā€™t he try to act reformed upon his escape? Wellā€¦ that was his original plan. By the time he escapes he has spent months being starved, isolated, and tortured, his mental stability ainā€™t exactly top notch at that point and based on those things even happening in the first place, his belief that people would think heā€™s reformed or allow him back into society has likely been squashed. Clearly, he didnā€™t think his previous friends would torture, starve, threaten to kill him if he ever leaves, even try to kill him when heā€™s already locked up. He underestimated their hatred and fear of him, so I doubt he had much faith at all for them to even let him have a chance to be ā€œreformedā€ or just not wanna kill him at that point, since again most of the people heā€™s interacted with up until he escaped wanted him dead or promised to kill him.
However, I do think there was still that underlying hope. You can hear that hope bleed out of his voice in his conversation with Sapnap as he goes from trying to reason with Sapnap as an old friend even with the offer to start over, to sounding just as insane and malevolent as he did with Tommy [clip] -> [clip] -> [clip]. He tries so hard to avoid the fight that Sapnap is setting him up for, he tries so hard for them just to not be enemies. But him escaping prison is evidence for Sapnap that Dream is still hostile and even the torture is not a good enough reasoning for that escape to be anything but proof of his violent ways. And you can hear the switch in his voice the moment he realizes the only way people listen to him is if heā€™s the villain they see him as, if he finds their weakness and exploits it, threatening to destroy something they love (sound familiar doesnā€™t it?ā€¦)
As for his encounter with Tommy, after spending time with him in prison and then Tommy trying to kill him while he was in prison, I donā€™t think he thought there was any world where they werenā€™t enemies. Tommy already proved himself to be hostile and he, despite his fear of Dream, even came to get the weapons and confront Dream in the exile area, knowing Dream was going there, proving to still be an active threat. And what does a rattle snake do when a threat appears? They rattle, they rattle make themselves appear big, they make the threat afraid and send the threat away. And that is what I believe Dream is doing with Tommy in that confrontation. Heā€™s making him afraid, so Tommy will be too scared to come after him. I donā€™t think he ever intended to make good on his threats, because honestly, there are other people on his priority list to get revenge and make suffer. And heā€™s saying the same things he said in the finale, we know was staged, about how heā€™s targeting Tommy specifically and Tommy being the main fun to torment on the server.
Now this plan does end up backfiring a bit because the moment Tommy returns home he immediately starts to form a group to go after and kill Dream, fortifying Tubboā€™s house to serve as a base and gathering gearā€¦ etc. Itā€™s because of that, that I think he leaves the creepy disc in Tommyā€™s basement, to make him more afraid so heā€™s too scared to come after himā€¦ so to me Iā€™m not sure we can say he didnā€™t try to act reformed, I donā€™t think he was given the chance. Even with people like Foolish, who doesnā€™t even know him, heā€™s on rocky terms with. It doesnā€™t seem to matter what he does after prison, he can mind his own business - lock himself away and not bother anyone for months or go through with his threats and theyā€™ll still wait outside his door to kill him and sneak into his house in the middle of the night to slit his throat. Hell even if he had done as Techno had and built a cottage in the middle of nowhere, I bet people still would have come after him. Heā€™s Dream after allā€¦
So Dream is clearly dancing on the edges of insanity and unable to gain any credit of change from people after prison, but as you point out, what about in prison. He sure didnā€™t seem to go out of his way to act reformed in prison and that was before the torture so does that mean this theory of him trying to be ā€œreformedā€ in the eyes of the server isnā€™t his goal? Well no, not necessarily. As Iā€™ve already mentioned, we can see the way he acts with Bad is very pitiful and making himself seem small and unthreatening to be let out, and we see him apologize to Tommy in his first visit and such. This though doesnā€™t appear to last long, but I think that is because he was experiencing lots of isolation, and not isolation that can be distracted from with like watching a movie or something (because he has nothing) - isolation without really anything to quell it. If youā€™ve watched videos relating to isolation or know much about it then youā€™ll know that it tanks mental health real fast. Therefore Dreamā€™s insanity sets in fast. Leading to his desperation for human contact, so then instead of acting all good and getting reformed and paying for his crimes and being remorseful and such, he starts acting out like throwing himself into lava and burning the clocks just so Sam has to come visit him. His misbehavior then I think is a symptom and consequence of the prison conditions not necessarily part of his plan. He also calls it a prank so he probably didnā€™t think itā€™d go that much against his plans of seeming better, but clearly Sam doesnā€™t seem to appreciate his pranks and starts becoming more hostile and such, which shouldnā€™t suprise us given Samā€™s behavior in the prison even early on. In addition, even Samā€™s response to Ponk in the tour of the prison and what he says to Bad later about using food as a means to get information, Iā€™d say itā€™s fair to assume that Samā€™s intense demeanor likely started early on, meaning I think Dreamā€™s food was being withheld early on, before the dropper was added. And thatā€™s besides the fact that going from eating steak to a few raw potatoā€™s would be a huge food reduction and cause issues anyways. So even before things get real bad, Dreamā€™s mental stability is dropping real fast and you can see it from each visit he gets. There is genuine mental decline there even if Dream does also seem to use it to his advantage. I mean who knows what Sam did for Dream to stop talking altogether in protest in Sapnapā€™s visitā€¦ bare in mind too, if we look at the timelines Exile only lasted 9 days, countries only last a month or two, things went really fast so itā€™s not unreasonable for Dream to think his sentence would be short. But then ā€œforeverā€ is being thrown around even by his own friend and thatā€™s when he probably realizes his plan is falling apart.
So by the time, Tommy visits again Dream is not in an optimistic and good mental state. Plus if I remember right, I believe Tommy said heā€™d visit a lot and even suggested being his like ā€œtherapistā€ but then didnā€™t come back until a month later on Feb 21st. So maybe Dream wrote the books but in his frustrating of being left alone and Tommy not coming back, ended up burning them.
In other words, I think originally the plan was for people to come visit and talk to him and see that heā€™s not such a bad guy and that his punishment has been sufficient to then be let out. But things fall apart fast. Isolation and boredom starts to set in, food starts to be limited, and people donā€™t visit. He just didnā€™t want to be alone -> and now is left entirely alone.
Then his plan to trap Tommy happens likely way later then it was supposed to because I doubt he expected it to be a month before Tommy returns, and he aims to make some form of amends however minuscule or least have them learn to cohabitate, but that doesnā€™t go to plan at all, in fact Tommy calls him names and bickers and whines the whole time and 9 days later after Dream expresses his love for the cat, Tommy kills it as well as starts doubting the existence of the Revive Book (the only reason they left him alive in the first place). So after spending weeks in boredom, isolation with low levels of food, and after over the week that was supposed to happen (based on the prison waiver signed) of listening to Tommy bitch and dealing with his punching and calling him names, and even while experiencing the terrible conditions still being adamant that Dream deserves this, Dream beats his head in in a fit of mania. And that I doubt was planned either, and certainly helps ruin his bigger plan.
So what was he planning to do in prison? I think be visited. I think write notes and letters to people and such. I donā€™t think it was about being reformed or redeemed per say or that Dream believed he needed that (though a fair argument could be made that that was part of it) but about just not being enemies. In an ideal situation heā€™d become friends again with people, but I think heā€™d have settled for just being seen as some guy again and not having everyone trying to kill him. Like how Bad didnā€™t become his friend during prison or after but isnā€™t necessarily actively seeking him out to kill him. Dream just didnā€™t want to be alone and I personally think the only way he saw a way to not be was to put himself in prison to be let out by the server when they were ready to not want to just kill himā€¦ but as it turns out they never stopped wanting to kill him, they were only held back by the knowledge of a book he had. And instead of going from big bad villain to just some guy, he became nothing more than a book instead. Instead of gaining friends to not be alone, his friends became his enemies and he was left to rot completely aloneā€¦ and after almost an entire year of suffering, heā€™s still enemy number 1, heā€™s still hunted down like a dog, they still want to kill him. Only this time, instead of stabbing him in the back at a festival, they make a deal with god just to kill him and break into his house in the night to kill him. In the end, if his plan was to be let out and let back into society as no longer the enemy, then his plan failed so spectacularly. And whether there was a moment specifically in prison or out where his plan became no longer feasible or whether it was unrealistic from the very start remains unclear. Though you could make an argument for each, Iā€™d say both are probably trueā€¦ I think it was perhaps the only option at least in Dreamā€™s mind to have his family back and yet I also think it was probably damned to fail from its very conceptionā€¦

are you confident more then ever about buddie canon?
Hey Nonnie
I was already confident about buddie canon - now Iā€™m sure and living my best life.
That was a dream of an episode - I really didnā€™t think we would get anything that blatant and loud until 8b - itā€™s all been set up so very perfectly - I cannot wait to go through the impending angst - itā€™s going to make the moment we go canon feel even more rewarding than it already was going to feel!
