not gonna lie i was talking about prototaxites, but looking at the wikipedia page that doesn't seem to be confirmed as a lichen at all like i thought it was, so i may have spread fake lichen news... ancient lichens are on my list of stuff to research for the lichen iceberg deconstruction video i've been working on, if it ever gets finished, so i can put in a correction there.

if anybody has papers on prehistoric lichens either confirming or denying the statement i put on the lichen iceberg meme. please recommend it to me. i can't go on spreading potential lichen falsehoods on the internet like this

Ask prompt fill for @thedarkstrategist from this ask meme: Will They/Won’t They Prompts Shadowzel - [ TRAINING ]: during a sparring session, the sender and receiver end up on the floor, leading one of them to seizing the upper hand and straddling the other. the receiver has an unexpected realization of their feelings regarding their sparring partner in the process. This got a little away from the original prompt but I'm pleased with how it turned out, I think. :D Hope you enjoy!

“You’re being very quiet, Lae’zel,” Shadowheart says casually, gnawing absently at a bit of jerky as they walk through the deepening Underdark. “One could almost have the bliss of forgetting you were there.”

“Chk,” Lae’zel grumbles. She doesn’t look towards Shadowheart, or at anyone, but stares ahead of them into the darkness. Her catlike eyes gleam in the brief flickers of light from the glowing mushrooms and bioluminescent lichen. “Do not press me, istik.”

“Let her be, Fringe,” Karlach says in a low voice. “Business at the creche went pretty bad.”

“I’m well aware,” Shadowheart says. She squints thoughtfully at the back of Lae’zel’s head. She did not go into the ruined monastery with Tav and Lae’zel and the others - but she saw how they came out. Tav and Gale and even Karlach looked very grim indeed, and Lae’zel has been nearly silent in the time since they departed the mountain pass.

It’s… unnerving, frankly. Shadowheart had begun to grow used to their verbal spats, to the energy with which Lae’zel would rise to their moments of conflict. It was an oddly comforting certainty to know that at the moments when the tension in her mind grew too much, she could lash out at the gith and find her a willing opponent. Lae'zel gives as good as she gets; there is fire in her.

Or there was - but now it is gone. Lae'zel's indomitable confidence seems to have left her along with her certainty about the creche's aid. She seems strained and tense, silent, watching the dark not like a predator but like prey.

And Shadowheart cannot help but prod at that strange and uncharacteristic reticence. She wants to see how deep it goes, and what it takes to light a spark in the ashes of the old fire.

"At least I no longer need to worry about the Prism," she says airly, shooting Lae'zel a pointed look. "Or will you demand it from me again, simply for spite?"

"You may keep it," Lae'zel says flatly. "You still dishonor a githyanki relic with your touch, but Vlaakith's will has sullied far more. I care not."

Shadowheart purses her lips, prodding again. "Are you sure?" she says dryly. "Or do you simply fear to be bested again in trying to take it from me?"

"Fringe--" Karlach says warningly, and Tav makes an uncomfortable noise under her breath-- but the blow has struck home, just a little. Lae'zel's gaze flashes over her shoulder at Shadowheart, her eyes narrowed.

"You did not best me, istik," she says between her teeth.

Shadowheart smiles. That anger sounds familiar. It sounds like Lae'zel, and not just the broken shell of her. "I suppose you often allow yourself to be pinned to the ground with a knife to your throat, then?"

"Kainyank..." Lae'zel hisses. "I had offered you a trial at first light. It was you who sought to underhand me and end the matter by stealth. You would not have survived a true test of blades."

"You sound very certain of that," Shadowheart shoots back. "You have no idea what I'm capable of."

"Perhaps it is about time I found out," Lae'zel says curtly. "Perhaps a proper demonstration of force will convince you to cease your endless jabbering."

"Certainly." Shadowheart's smile goes tight. "Whenever you like, feel free to show me, and we can see whether you can--"

The gith moves like lightning. Before Shadowheart has finished speaking, Lae'zel spins with a wordless, enraged cry, pushing Karlach aside one-handed and crashing the other hand against Shadowheart's jaw. At the same time, she hooks one leg behind Shadowheart's knee, sending her with a crunching, lung-clearing thud into the fungus-padded ground. Shadowheart's vision flashes, and for a moment she can't breathe, something inside her head doing a remarkable impression of a bass drum. 

She comes back to herself to find Lae'zel's weight pinning her into the dirt. The gith has her blade out and pressed not to Shadowheart's neck but against her chest, the point nicking a skin-deep cut between the plates of her armor. Her other hand is tangled into Shadowheart's hair, holding her in place with a firm, implacable grip.

For a moment, Shadowheart flares with rage, and she gathers all her energy to struggle against the weight holding her down. But something gives her pause - an entirely unexpected glint in Lae'zel's eyes beneath the veneer of anger. She can feel the twitch of the tadpole connection between them, the flicker of shared emotion, of unspoken meaning without words. Do not press me, istik. I do not wish to kill you. I have nothing left.

Silence. Shadowheart doesn't move, and neither does Lae'zel. And Shadowheart feels a flicker of strange sympathy go through her, all at once. With the fall of the creche, Lae'zel is utterly alone, tossed to the wolves of this alien world to find her own way after a life spent in the safety of regimen and duty. She is alone just as Shadowheart is, sent from the creche on a mission that has no clear purpose she is allowed to understand. And she is afraid, and perhaps she has always been afraid, showing her teeth like a wounded animal.

Perhaps Shadowheart has always been afraid too.

"I think you've made your point," she says in a low voice. It isn't an apology, but it's the closest either of them are likely to give. 

Another long pause. Then the knife recedes. Lae'zel draws back, then moves from her straddled position over Shadowheart's body. She doesn't speak, just sheathes the knife and stands, looking down so that their eyes meet. Then she turns and walks away, striding forward into the darkness ahead.
