Just to add on here, when this happens within a word rather than within a larger phrase, these are called cranberry morphemes! (to oversimplify a little bit, a morpheme is the minimal linguistic unit with both form and meaning – for example, both "cat" and the plural suffix "-s" are single morphemes because they cannot be broken down further)

Anyways, cranberry morphemes are named as such because "cran" is only used in the word "cranberry" and not elsewhere, i.e. you can't really form a new word by adding "cran-" onto the beginning. There's definitely others, this is just the most famous example in English (also, it's completely possible that in some varieties of English "cran" is still a thing outside "cranberry"? Not sure)

A good example in another language is "öldök" in Hungarian, found only in the word "szemöldök" ("eyebrow").

so weird how in english some words are really just used in expressions and not otherwise… like has anyone said “havoc” when not using it in the phrase “wreaking havoc”? same goes for “wreaking” actually…
