She Would Be King (🇱🇷 Liberia)
[image1: book cover: a navy background with stylized waves, inset is a painting of Black woman with red hair, facing away; image2: map showing Liberia on the west coast of Africa; image3: a vintage photo circa 1900 of an African-American Liberian family in Western clothing]
She Would Be King
Author: Wayétu Moore
World Challenge Read for 🇱🇷 Liberia
Review
This novel follows three people with magical gifts, woven into Liberian history:
Gbessa, a West African of the Vai people, born cursed and eventually ostracized from her village, but unable to die.
June Dey, divinely conceived but born a slave in Virginia, until he discovers his gift of great strength.
and Norman Aragon, born of a forced relationship of a white man and Jamaican Maroon, with pale skin and the ability to disappear.
Together, guided by a divine wind, they find it their destiny to help the fledgling colony of Liberia. However, so many factions at play make it difficult - former slaves who look down on the indigenous people as less civilized, white governors with their own agendas, raiding French slavers. The book especially follows Gbessa, the titular would-be king, and her long journey to finding her power.
The author is a storyteller, the dialogue is lovely. I thought there was a lot of background to tell before we even get to Liberia's story, but if you don't mind this pacing the story is unique, giving voice to these diverse Black people from a century and a half ago. I find I like magical realism stories also.

This year for my Independence Day read, I chose She Would Be King by Wayétu Moore. She’s a brilliant Liberian-American author and I’ve really enjoyed previous books from her. ❤️

Edward Wilmot Blyden (1832–1912) was a prominent intellectual, diplomat, writer, and politician widely regarded as a pioneer of Pan-Africanism. Born on August 3, 1832, in Saint Thomas, Danish West Indies (now the U.S. Virgin Islands), Blyden moved to Liberia in 1850, inspired by the ideals of African colonization.
In Liberia, he became an influential figure, serving in various roles such as a professor, journalist, and government official. He promoted the education and empowerment of Africans and African-Americans, emphasizing pride in African heritage and culture. His writings, including Christianity, Islam, and the Negro Race (1887), highlighted the need for Africans to reclaim their identity and resist the cultural dominance of the West. Blyden also argued for the importance of Islam in African civilization, contrasting it with the colonial influence of Christianity.
Blyden held significant political positions, such as the Liberian Secretary of State and Minister of the Interior. He also worked as a diplomat and educator in Sierra Leone and other parts of West Africa, championing African unity and self-reliance.
Edward Wilmot Blyden died on February 7, 1912, in Freetown, Sierra Leone. His legacy as a Pan-Africanist and advocate for African self-determination continues to inspire leaders and movements across the African diaspora.🇱🇷

Liberia 🇱🇷 Democratic Elections Are A Beacon Of Hope
In what might seem like a rarity as of late, President George Weah conceded defeat to President-Elect Joseph Boakai in a close runoff election held a few days ago.
youtube
The US 🇺🇸 government was also pleased with the process & congratulated Liberia 🇱🇷 for once again choosing a peaceful transfer of power (which sadly is not the norm around the African continent & even in America 🇺🇸).
Liberian President George Weah conceded defeat today to Joseph Boakai in the presidential runoff election held on November 14. We congratulate president-elect Boakai on his victory and President Weah for his peaceful acceptance of the results. As President Weah said in his concession speech, “Tonight, the CDC has lost the election, but Liberia has won. This is a time for graciousness in defeat, a time to place our country above party, and patriotism above personal interest . . . Let us heal the divisions caused by the campaign and come together as one nation and one united people.”
The United States congratulates the people of Liberia on holding a peaceful presidential runoff election. We note the broad participation of Liberians across the country and applaud the commitment and dedication of Liberian citizens in exercising their right to vote and in engaging in the electoral process peacefully.
Liberians deserve and expect free and fair, peaceful elections. We call on all citizens to follow President Weah’s example and accept the results. We congratulate Liberia’s institutions on a successful electoral process, especially the dedicated work of the National Elections Commission and the thousands of Liberians who worked the polls.
Graciously accepting defeat in an election is one of the rare qualities in short supply nowadays, as many political leaders worldwide will either contest the results (dividing & polarizing a country even further) or attempt a coup & overthrow the government by force.
Hopefully Liberia 🇱🇷 can initiate a new trend, where respecting legit election results is once again normal & citizens do not have to fear the possibility of civil war. While President George Weah is conceding, he seems intent on running for President again in 2029.

...so, the MV Cordellia Moon is a Panama 🇵🇦 ship, with a cargo of Russian 🇷🇺 oil bound for China 🇨🇳 and a crew of Indian 🇮🇳 sailors...
youtube
Like, seriously!???
Our special Houthi friends tried to bomb another ship, the Liberian 🇱🇷 bulk carrier Minoan Courage also on October 1, but ineffectually it appears. They whiffed so hard on the third ship they claim to have attacked that we don't actually know which ship they were trying to attack. I like pirates, but they are getting dumber and this anti-Zionist ideology isn't working... Back in the day, Somali pirates knew what was up. This?

🇱🇷 Happy Independence Day Liberia!!! #1847
•
My Review: God Bless those who volunteered for the Peace Corps! I loved this compilation of stories and poems from those who served in Liberia over the years. From medical, nutrition, and educator personnel, these people experienced a different culture than their own, bonded with people they probably didn’t think they would and made such a difference for the people of Mama Liberia. Her people deserve good things given their history, especially the strife they endured during the two civil wars and illnesses like Ebola. I enjoyed reading about the Peace Corps members’ experiences and what they did when they returned to their home countries. I read this book this year, 2023, in honor of Liberia’s Independence Day. As a child of Liberian parents, I loved reading about all the cultural traditions that have been part of my life since I was born. I could relate to some things in the book, as I have been to Liberia twice in my lifetime. It was a very compelling read!
