Is it okay for people with agoraphobia to look and take some of the advice you have for housebound people on here? I'm not really great at picking up nuance so I'm worried that it'd be crossing some boundary or that it's not the intention of the tag

that’s completely okay, i appreciate your desire to be respectful even though i’m sorry you were concerned! i absolutely consider folks with agoraphobia my comrades + community members and i’d be super honored if anything i’ve shared is helpful (+ am always interested in hearing what that was if you’re comfortable!) the rest of this is not anything you need to answer your question, just thoughts i’ve been having on the subject

i haven’t had the opportunity to talk to enough homebound [due to chronic illness / “physical” reasons] people to know if this is a common experience but for me i’ve noticed that similar to chronic illness often carrying depression with it, since becoming homebound i’ve become terrified of leaving the house.

this is definitely influenced by the fact that it’s untenably painful, my photosensitivity (in the UV sense not the epilepsy sense), the ongoing pandemic, the fact that i only left the house to go to the doctor for over a year & i’m afraid of the doctors appointment itself due to medical trauma, etc etc but like. there’s also the very strong pull of habit – i’m an incredibly obsessive & ritualistic person – and what Goffman refers to as “the relief of self-isolation” for marginalized people sheltering from a hostile society, a phrase i read in undergrad 5 1/2 years ago that’s stuck with me ever since for how profoundly it resonates.

i’m not trying to say these are necessarily your or any other person with agoraphobia’s feelings & experiences, more to illustrate how the liberation of all homebound people & shut-ins & hermits is bound up together; any sanist strategy for oppressing agoraphobes can easily be leveraged against me, not least because as a severely underdiagnosed person, the medical establishment does not think there is any “legitimate” “physical” reason for me to be homebound. to respond to this oppression by arguing it’s inapplicable because i’m not crazy would be untrue + a cruel act of lateral violence.

i’ve been reading a lot of butch/femme history recently (i post about that on my main @campgender; followers age 18+ only please) & have found myself entirely reconfiguring my understanding of the queer art of isolation, the incredible ability of our ancestors to hunker down & survive under circumstances unimaginable to the average person. i absolutely don’t want to deny the deep pain – not only the aspects i experience but also the heightened isolation of people without or before internet access + the ways these circumstances / forms of oppression can foster abuse –

but my god, so many 50s butches didn’t leave their homes during daylight hours for years in order to not be hate crimed for their gender presentation, & that’s the folks who were making it to the bars. so many others – “discreet” couples who didn’t want to risk being outed by engaging in queer community; people assigned female who “passed” as men & their partners; butch sex workers & other people with identities perceived as contradictory or unacceptable – existed marginalized by both queer & normative communities.

every time i think substantially about homeboundedness i always get tracy chapman’s “subcity” stuck in my head. obviously my access to housing period is a huge position of privilege, & i’m in the most economically secure position of my adult life so far; the abjection i experience is nowhere near the scale of people in the position of the speaker of the song, who’s implied to be street homeless. but the line “people say it doesn’t exist ‘cause no one would like to admit that there is a city underground” is such a succinct & accurate depiction of living the kind of life society tries to convince itself is impossible. but there truly is a rich genealogy of homeboundedness especially in queer history.

Oh, man, I definitely relate to that. Obsessively worrying about my dog is pretty frequent for me, and I'd like to talk about one of my own experiences.

A while back, I had been left alone in my house for a few days with only the dog for company, and she's great. I love her. She's the sweetest, most affectionate pet you can imagine. It's also really hard for the two of us to be alone together because my compulsions usually surround the concept of cleanliness and she is, after all, a dog.

During this time, my mind was trying to convince me that she had rabies. There wasn't a specific precursor to this, but the thought wouldn't leave me alone. It became hard for me to even be in the same room as her. Feeding her was hard because it meant touching her food bowl. Walking was hard (harder than usual, anyway, because the outside world is FULL of "contaminants") because I was extra vigilant about her not catching anything that she hadn't already; it hurt to let her so much as sniff grass.

When she wanted to cuddle in the evening, like we usually do, I wanted to run away. It was terrifying. I also couldn't do anything to fix it, and it only got better when the rest of my household returned.

In a way, that specific pattern of thoughts isn't so different from what Philip experienced, albeit to a wildly different severity. I had felt like my dog had an affliction even though I knew there was little to no basis for that idea; Philip thought his brother had an affliction, and he had been raised not only to think that it was real, but that the consequence was the loss/ruin of his brother's soul. I had also only been isolated for a few days, but it can be inferred that Philip had been largely on his own for years. Worst of all, I had found my dog more than repulsive, regardless of how much I adore her. That parallel should be pretty obvious.

I think that one of the strangest things about Belos' OCD is that, as far as depictions of OCD go, it's honestly not half bad. Sure, it's taken to cartoonishly villainous proportions, but I wouldn't expect anything less from a character like him. His obsessions make perfect sense for his story and neither his thoughts nor his compulsions are ever treated as a gag or a joke. He could have been the scrupulosity edition of Death the Kid, but he wasn't.

In my opinion, the issue of Belos' OCD comes more from the context surrounding it than anything else. If he wasn't the only character with OCD, had a significant narrative foil, and/or had his disorder apply to something other than just his villainy, it might have actually been a pretty significant depiction for a kid's show.

Thank you so much for your post. I have OCD and Belos's depiction has always bothered me in some way, but you finally put it in words.

(Also, I would actually argue Hunter has it too--a particular scene that really resonated with me in this regard is in Thanks to Them when he sees his long hair in the mirror and convinces himself that it means he's literally going to become Belos, and he has to cut it all off so that doesn't happen.)

YEAH!!! A good argument can definitely be made for both Belos and Hunter. Darius comes to mind, as well.

I have OCD as well, and since Belos is my favorite character, I must admit that I enjoy being able to relate to him in this way. The bigger problem is that, as far as canon is concerned, he's the only character with OCD, and it's what drives him to become the evil-evil self-interested "not genuine" villain. If toh had bothered to explore his backstory and express some sympathy toward his character, it probably wouldn't have felt so awkward, but alas.

The thing is, folks with OCD can fall into patterns of self-reassurance and disordered thinking very easily. Something I didn't mention in the last post is the link between OCD and psychosis (x x), which often prominently shows itself through delusions - a symptom that Belos expresses in conjunction with and as a result of his OCD, and one informed greatly by his traumatic childhood.

So much of Belos' character was informed by Caleb's death. His mission might have gone from saving humanity to seeking revenge; we don't get enough insight to know whether that was the case. What we do know is that he was (mostly) alone for a very long time afterward, stewing in obsessive thoughts and reassuring himself again and again with both the things he was taught and the losses he's felt as justification. He can't be wrong; the "or else" isn't an option.

Seeing the show say "he sucks because he just inherently has this disordered thinking" didn't feel good. As somebody with OCD, I recognized his disordered thought patterns. I have those disordered thought patterns, and I'm constantly forced to be careful not to fall into them the same way. Belos is an example of somebody with a disorder that lost the only form of a support system he ever had, and instead of resolving his story with an opportunity to either break out of those disordered thoughts or be destroyed by them, toh just said, "he's evil, so he should die" without the nuance demanded for the main villain. Once again, I need to stress that no other character in the show has canonical OCD.

Alas, OCD is misrepresented so often that I'm not even sure whether the creators realized that they wrote Belos to have it at all.

Books that in one way or another make noise in themselves. Do you have any examples? Could you describe your feelings? I wanna be clear that I'm not upset about the block itself - although it struck me as a bit strange (esp given I don't remember ever interacting with this creator before - I only discovered them yesterday), it's also totally their prerogative to block whoever they want for whatever reason - but after an overwhelming amount of responses it appears that they've blocked about half of simblr including pretty much all of my mutuals lol so whatever is going on is probably above my head - i was just worried i’d missed something, but i've been completely reassured now by a bunch of you lovely people that's not the case! thank you to everyone who took the time to reply to my post / message me with similar stories <3

I’m trying to come back to Christianity after deconstructing and your blog has been a great help to me, but I still struggle with the phrase “Jesus died for our sins.” I feel like it places undue responsibility on people who had nothing to do with his death. How is it possible that he died for my sins when I didn’t even exist 2,000 years ago?? Or am I taking the phrase too literally?

Hey there, I feel you! I know of so many people who, especially as young children, were made to feel a lot of guilt over the idea that "Jesus died for your sins." And that's a problem, especially seeing as Jesus came to liberate us from our guilt, and to invite us into full and mutual relationship with him.

While the dominant Christianities that exist in our culture/s right now don't like to acknowledge it, there have always been many different ways of understanding what happened on the cross and how salvation "works." So if this phrasing does harm rather than good for you, there are many other ways to understand salvation!

One that resonates most with me is a view of salvation that doesn't focus solely upon what happened on the cross, but instead takes the entire Incarnation into account. In her book Inspired (which is such a fabulous read, especially for folks working to reconnect with Christianity & scripture), Rachel Held Evans sums this idea up well:

Jesus didn’t just “come to die.” Jesus came to live—to teach, to heal, to tell stories, to protest, to turn over tables, to touch people who weren’t supposed to be touched and eat with people who weren’t supposed to be eaten with, to break bread, to pour wine, to wash feet, to face temptation, to tick off the authorities, to fulfill Scripture, to forgive, to announce the start of a brand-new kingdom, to show us what that kingdom is like, to show us what God is like, to love his enemies to the point of death at their hands, and to beat death by rising from the grave. Jesus did not simply die to save us from our sins; Jesus lived to save us from our sins. His life and teachings show us the way to liberation. But you can’t fit all that on a bumper sticker.

For God so loved the world, They took on human flesh. Jesus's whole life was lived in love for us, for you — all the joys and connections that contained, not just the pain and death.

Another thing that I always stress, and that you point out in your ask, is that we have to be careful when we discuss who's responsible for Jesus's death. Otherwise we end up with people blaming Jewish people, or scared little kids, or even God for his death.

Ultimately, it was human beings in a very specific context, and imbued with systemic power, who enabled and carried out his execution: Roman soldiers acting on behalf of the Roman Empire. Jesus died because corrupt human powers cannot stand for the Good News of liberation and abundant life for all peoples. He died in ultimate solidarity with all who are similarly oppressed or executed across history.
