Batman Wayne Family Adventures Vol 5 by CRC Payne & Starbite
5/5
This post is for Fan entertainment, I’m not being paid.
Click here to see Batman Master List.
Hey Everyone,
I hope you are well.
Yay! I got the volume of Wayne Family Adventures! I always look forward to reading this series, it’s so wholesome and funny. It’s a nice break from some other books I do read now a days. This issue seems to be heavy on the emotions across the board.
Which again, is why I like this series so much. That each of the Bat-family members get their own little spotlight shine on them so its not so focus on one person (i.e. Batman).
One thing I do need to brush up on is Duke, I haven’t read any of the comics that he came into the picture. This series is the first thing I have read about Duke, and the more I read this series I pretty much got the idea of his story, again another tragic story for such a young person to deal with.
This volume has some major emotions coming from Jason, Stephaine, Luke Fox, Damian. I thought this was really well done in how they dealt with their emotions.
However, this volume has some of the funniest chapters I have read. Roy Harper’s daughter played both Jason & Dick like a kazoo. So, a carnival around and Roy, Lian, Jason and Dick are there to have fun. However, Jason is now in a contest with Dick is who is the favorite. So, all day they are trying to best each other winning prizes and getting carnival food.
My favorite chapter was one the last one, Damian overheard a very stressed-out Bruce and taking the words that he overhears tells Duke, Tim and Stephanie. So, doing some sleuthing they find very obtuse notes in the Bat computer, they find the location and things don’t go to well, but the ending was cute.
I can’t wait to get Vol 6, but it might be a while since looking up the chapter where vol 5 ends is where we are currently at now. With the Joker Arc, it might be a while before we get vol 6, but I believe this series is worth waiting for.

There are many people talking about "bad things" that Liam would have done, and even that his death should not be felt, that it does not make sense for us to continue with this when he said so many things about the boys. But as One Direction fans who closely followed so many things that happened to them that led to the end of the band, we know a little about what Liam was feeling, and his actions at that moment. and another point I never stop seeing Lian Payne as that kid from 2010 on the xfactor
When they told me everything that happened I thought about this Liam, the Liam I met 14 years ago, the one who made everything more painful. For me he will always be

Mis lecturas del 2017
¡Mis #libros favoritos del 2017! #lector #ReadingChallenge #blog

Webtoons are good for the soul PART II - ECLECTIC BOOGALOO
A continuation of this.
Sea Salt and Sand by neggut [ongoing]
In the autumn holidays 3 months ago, Brynn and Bailey shared a kiss. When Bailey left, Brynn tried to forget all about her and continue living an unremarkable life, only for Bailey to suddenly transfer to her school! What follows is a coming of age story full of pining, misunderstandings and confusion as Brynn and Bailey question the true nature of their relationship.
It’s cute and a bit angsty but not too much. The art style often feels incomplete or rushed but in a good way, its flaws give character to the characters and the story. One of my all time favourites.
Apathy meets labrador/10
Dragonbourne by Gummy Shark [ongoing]
After a troubled past, Sir Ross Edmund Avery is somewhat content to lead a mundane existence, alone in his house. However, when he stumbles upon a child in the woods on Solstice Night who is anything but mundane, his simple life will be turned upside down.
A scar(r)ed man adopts a feral child, hijinks ensue. Once again, the art style is endearing, full of curves and long lines. Haven’t checked on that one in a while but the first twenty chapters were very promising.
Found family/10
The Last Human by Zack Jordan [ongoing]
She's the galaxy's worst nightmare: a Human. Fortunately, she's the last one. Now her adoptive (alien) mother is realizing that raising a young Human is no easy task.
Basically the badass and child duo trope but the truth may surprise you. Fun, cute, very wholesome, and surprisingly emotionnaly philosophical at times. Spidermom is best mom.
Recommend/10
Vampire Husband by Scragony [ongoing]
The life of Charles the Vampire an Cheryl the human after years of marriage.
What if tragic romance between human and vampire but they had their “happy-ever-after”? This is after. It’s funny and cute.
Relationship goals/10
Blood Stain by sigeel [ongoing]
A story about courage, growing up and finding friendships in most unlikely places... spiced with some MAD SCIENCE!
Haven’t quite wrapped my head around this one yet, but it’s fun and drawn by sigeel (a.k.a. Linda Sejic) so of course it’s beautiful. Enjoyed it a lot, will have to keep reading.
Bloody merry/10
Punderworld by sigeel [ongoing - on hiatus]
Hades' and Persephone's love-struck misadventures.
Another take on Hades and Persephone’s love story. Once again, sigeel, so of course I love the art.
Bumbling idiots/10
The Queen and the Woodborn by Shiniez [ongoing]
Far away behind seven hills and seven forests, seven fields and seven rivers, there lived a Queen... welcome to the queen and the woodborn. a fairy tale romance for the mature readers about the unseen Queen and the Goddess in the woods. a tale of the two forgotten by the world around them who will make the world remember their names. expect gods and monsters and a romance for the ages.
Not many chapters yet but very long ones to compensate. This one is by Shiniez (a.k.a. Stjepan Sejic) so, once again, love the art. The story, the character designs and concepts, and the pace are all amazing.
Very wow/10
P.E.T.S. by Gyxks [ongoing]
Just when Tasha was about to start a new life, she was abducted by aliens. Fortunately, she and other humans were rescued by an interstellar general named Tourmaline. She soon discovered that her body was unfit to return home without endangering life on earth. Join her on her journey traversing this new world and these new feelings for an alien general.
POV: You’re living your best life as a young adult, at the shopping mall at 2am in your pyjamas, when suddenly death aliens rain pain all around and you’re abducted only to be saved by tall buff alien commander lady. Romance ensues. Maybe, it’s slow burn but quite enjoyable to read.
Blush/10
Scoob and Shag by Misterie Krew [ongoing]
Scoob and his best pal Shag are up to their usual hi-jinks, but everything is not as it seems in their latest adventure.
No relations to any character whatsoever. None. None at all. Also no relations to any kind of sense at all either. Can’t quite explain that one except that it’s genius. Just read it.
Is that a gun?/10
Bewitched by peachyytown [ongoing]
The witch who keeps "kidnapping" the princess is actually her girlfriend and they're just going on dates.
Short but cute alternative take on all that witch/monster/princess shenanigans. In the same vein as Our days in Lumain. Also the art is very nice.
Meetcute/10
When the Pink Trees Bear Fruit by neggut [completed]
A sweet love blooms between two women on an orchard in 1973.
A short story, five chapters only, but play devastatingly well with one’s heart. In the same vein as It Stems From Love by Soya S. Holm. neggut ist sehr gut.
Tears/10
Rooftops & Roommates by Zaanart [ongoing]
Jeb is an architecture major at university, rooming with his best friend Todd. There's just one problem... Jeb’s secretly a gargoyle! Between studying, partying, and a bad ghost problem, will Jeb be able to keep his true identity a secret?
Jeb is sweet, Jeb is fresh, but Jeb is decidedly not very good at keeping a secret. It’s funny, slice-of-life, roommate college shenanigans at its finest. With a magical twist.
Ship/10
Everything is Fine by Mike Birchall [ongoing]
Sam and Maggie are a normal couple, in a normal house, in a normal neighborhood. There is nothing strange about their heads, their neighbors or their sweet little dog. Everything is Fine.
I haven’t actually started this one yet, but the premise is very very very interesting. Perhaps not for thos who are faint of heart? Deceptively cute. Or is it?
It’s fine/10
Castle Swimmer by Wendy Lian Martin [ongoing]
What happens when your entire life is ruled by a prophecy – your future foretold by people you’ve never met, who died long before you were born. Such is the story of two young sea creatures. One believed to be a guiding light for his people, a Beacon who will lead them to a bright, prosperous future. The other is a teenage prince for who’s destiny is to KILL the Beacon so that HIS own people might thrive. When both reject the course set for them, it leads to a raucous adventure as big and unpredictable as the ocean itself – and a romance that nobody could have predicted.
It’s fish. It’s gay. It’s under da sea and ya gotta kiss the boy. I haven’t read it all yet but enough to vouch for it and to have some vested interest in the universe and its lore.
Enemies to lovers/10
Demon Highschool by Kiiyoko [ongoing]
After a compromise it was agreed that criminals would attend a "demons highschool" where they would work as slaves for demons And while it was all in good favor, things take a very dark and twisted turn at said, highschool.
There’s something, some kind of twist, about the MC which I haven’t gotten to yet, and which I am very interested to discover. I’m not quite sure how I feel about this one as of now, mostly curious I’d say.
Pet/10
Hooky by Miriam Bonastre Tur [completed]
Dani and Dorian have missed the bus of the school of magic. Now, they must find someone who teach them how to be a great and good witches... Or maybe not.
This one is a strange one about witchery and family. Surprisingly deep and serious at times, very enjoyable. Unfinished on Webtoon but a good start to get into the story.
Siblings/10
Loving Reaper by Jenny Jinya [ongoing]
Animals struggle. Pets and Wildlife alike. The reaper cares for their stories and helps them with the crossover. Short stories about the "Loving Reaper" to raise awareness and collect funds. Breaking hearts for a good cause.
Beautiful bittersweet stories about animals, pets, life and death and love.
Tissues/10
Batman: Wayne Family Adventures by StarBite, CRC Payne, Kielamel Siba, Lan Ma, C.M. Cameron, and Camille Cruz [ongoing]
Batman needs a break. But with new vigilante Duke Thomas moving into Wayne Manor and an endless supply of adopted, fostered, and biological superhero children to manage, Bruce Wayne is going to have his hands full. Being a father can't be harder than being Batman, right?
What if Bat-family but happy? Official comic, barely started, very fun.
Wholesome/10
The First Night With the Duke by MSG, Taeva, from an original work by Hwang DoTol [ongoing]
A handsome, selfish noble falls for a beautiful, kind commoner -- at least, that’s how the story’s supposed to go. When an average college student wakes up as Ripley, an extra in her favorite romance novel, she resolves to enjoy the luxuries of her character’s status while watching the novel's plot unfold from the sidelines. However, her plans are soon derailed when she finds herself in bed with no other than Duke Zeronis, the novel’s hero! Dodging the villainess’ schemes, the Duke’s advances, and her own feelings, can Ripley keep the story on track and survive beyond the first night?
Haven’t read that one but a very dear (and respectable) friend (*cough* @berigolote *cough*) of mine keeps pestering me to give it a try. So here it is, try it.
Do it before me and you get a cookie/10
HEART Anthology by Marvin.W, caw-chan and many other artists. [ongoing]
Featuring stories from the 2020 Short Story Contest! From wholesome stories to tearjerkers, are you ready to catch these feelings?
A collection of beautiful stories on the shorter side, all about the many kinds of love in life, the many beauties of it, and the pains that make it worth living.
Tears that warm the heart/10
In My Heart by Redfield42 [ongong]
Sasaki Mari is a typical delinquent troublemaker whose only goal is to get a boyfriend, but due to her reputation as bully and low grades, all the boys reject her. Then she decides to change her style, and asks for help from the student with the best grades in the class.
It starts off light and fund and progressively seems to delve a little bit more into the seriousness of life. Not a tragedy, however, and very much worth a read still.
I think I have a trope I like/10
My awkward princess by LazyArts [ongoing]
This love story is about a girl named Luna charlotte, and the student council president Alice Evelyn. Luna is a delinquent whom often gets in trouble, as Luna reaches the end of the line she almost gets expelled, now luna has to become a model student with the help of Alice. Will Luna be expelled or will she succeed, read to find out.
Along the lines of Not So Shoujo Love Story, In My Heart, and Susuhara is a Demon. Delinquent/Good Student meetcute, romantinc hijincks ensue.
Seduction/10
RAINBOW! by Rue & Sunny Gloom [ongoing]
This is the story of a girl named Boo. She has pink hair and a vivid imagination and she is about to discover a side of herself that she never considered before.
Okay, so yes, this one is also also a delinquent meets cute nice girl, but - BUT! - there’s an element of story telling that I love about it: the way we see Boo’s anxiety incorporated visually into the story. Just for that it is one of my favourite recent discoveries!
Protecc/10
-----------------------
Okay, that’s all for part II. Hope you enjoy those as much as I do. Thanks for your attention, sorry for the length and, please, do keep on reading, they all deserve it! As do you.

Literary thrillers, song-and-dance cartoons, East Van gangs at this weekend’s Word Vancouver
Katherine Collins will talk about her groundbreaking Canadian comics creation, Neil the Horse, at this year’s Word Vancouver.
From the 1900 salmon strike to the 2017 women’s march, Vancouver boasts a long history of activism. This history is the subject of City on Edge: A Rebellious Century of Vancouver Protests, Riots, and Strikes, a new book by Kate Bird.
Bird is one of many authors featured at this year’s Word Vancouver Festival. The festival gets underway today (Tues. Sept 19) and features (free!) readings and events throughout the week.
But the whole thing culminates on Sunday, Sept 24 with a full, multi-author day of activities in and around the downtown branch of the Vancouver Public Library (350 W. Georgia). Events include readings, presentations, workshops, kids books, and even poetry (poetry! in this day and age!). Below, we’ve listed a few of Sunday’s authors and presentations we think might be worth checking out.
11:20 am Aaron Chapman—Chapman is a Vancouver historian with a penchant for the city’s demi-monde. Previous books include a history of the notorious Penthouse Nightclub as well as the city’s historic concert and show venue, the Commodore Ballroom. The author will talk about his most recent book, The Last Gang in Town: The Epic Story of the Vancouver Police vs. the Clark Park Gang (Arsenal Pulp Press $ 24.95).
Sunday 11:45 am Kate Bird—Drawing from her book City on Edge: A Rebellious Century of Vancouver Protests, Riots, and Strikes (Greystone Books $ 32.95), Bird presents images and background on flashpoint events in the city’s sometimes tumultuous history. A former Vancouver Sun/Province photo archivist, Bird is the author of the bestselling Vancouver in the Seventies. (Note: From Sept 28-Feb. 18, 2019, The Museum of Vancouver presents City on Edge: A Century of Vancouver Activism. The exhibition expands on the book with a showcase of 650 images drawn from the Sun/Province archives.)
Thousands of people filled the Vancouver Art Gallery lawns Sat., October 15, 2011 as part of Occupy Vancouvert. Photo by Jason Payne/ PNG.
2:05 p.m. Robyn Harding—Who doesn’t love a good literary thriller? Apparently, Harding’s The Party (Simon & Schuster Canada $ 22.00) delivers the goods; the publisher likens it to Herman Koch’s The Dinner, Christos Tsiolkas’s The Slap, and Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Lies. In her review, the Vancouver Sun’s Aleesha Harris wrote, With more twists and turns than a turn on the wooden coaster at the PNE, The Party delivers a thoroughly damning view of not only the superficial value set that the appearances-driven family it’s centred around holds so dear — but also broader modern values, in general.”
3:50 pm Katherine Collins—From 1975 to 1988, cartoonist Katherine Collins (in her pre-transition identity of Arn Saba) wrote and drew the adventures of Neil the Horse and his friends. Earlier this year, Conundrum Press published The Collected Neil the Horse, a mighty tome that reveals the groundbreaking nature of the strip—a wonderfully absurdist funny-animal comedy incorporating song-and-dance, music notation, fashion and more. Meet the fascinating individual behind this most distinctive of (Canadian) comic strips.
4:20 pm Michael V. Smith—We admit that we’re including Kelowna-based Smith based on the cover of his latest book, Bad Ideas (Nightwood Editions $ 18.95), which features a cat smoking a cigarette. From wordvancouver.ca: “Nobody knows bad ideas quite like Michael V. Smith. In his new collection of poetry, he speaks to an intangibility of sense, or a sense beyond the rational. Bad Ideas explores the inevitability of loss and triumph with characteristic irony and tenderness.” The site lists Smith’s accomplishments as “writer, comedian, filmmaker, performance artist, and occasional clown.” His other books include My Body Is Yours (Arsenal Pulp Press, 2015), a Lambda Literary Award finalist.
There are tons more authors and events. Check out wordvancouver.ca for a full schedule and more info.

The Laura Dern-aissance: From Blacklisted After ‘Ellen’ to 2017 Scene-Stealer of ‘Big Little Lies’ and ‘Twin Peaks’
A formidable actress, Laura Dern has been working in Hollywood since age 5. At 13 years old, the daughter of icons Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern became the youngest Miss Golden Globe and soon thereafter earned critical acclaim with her breakout role in Blue Velvet. The 1986 film also marked the first time Dern and director David Lynch would work together throughout her career, a pairing that continues with Twin Peaks’ celebrated return on Showtime.
Known for her highly emotive face, Dern built a diverse and award-winning career as a working actress in the decade following Blue Velvet. She starred in Wild at Heart, her first reunion with Lynch; earned her first Academy Award nomination for Rambling Rose; and found blockbuster success as Dr. Ellie Sattler in Jurassic Park. On TV, she picked up two Primetime Emmy nominations for roles in Afterburn and Fallen Angels. Then, in 1997, she played Ellen DeGeneres’ love interest in the two-part coming out episode of Ellen.
With a reported 42 million viewers, “The Puppy Episode” became the highest rated episode of Ellen ever, going on to earn multiple Emmy nominations, including one for Dern. But soon after it aired, a backlash followed, and the actress -- along with DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey, who also guest-starred -- eventually found herself blacklisted. In a reunion on The Ellen Show, Dern says she didn’t work for a year in Hollywood after the episode, in large part because many people thought she was gay. “I started getting calls, which was so shocking to me, from friends and colleagues, even gay friends and colleagues, saying, ‘Are you sure you want to do that?’” Dern said on the show, recalling the negative feedback she began receiving soon after saying yes to the part.
Thankfully, Hollywood couldn’t hold her back for long. The year only served as a pause, marking the next wave of her career. Working her way back into the fold, Dern returned to grace with supporting roles in October Sky and Dr. T & the Women, a cameo in Jurassic Park III, and a guest-starring role on The West Wing. Soon after, she added gravitas to Lynch’s Inland Empire and won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Katherine Harris in HBO’s Recount. By 2011, the actress was seemingly back on top, earning critical praise and an Emmy nomination -- ultimately her fifth without a win -- for her starring role on Enlightened. Sadly, the HBO series was short-lived. But Dern persevered.
Following her second Oscar nomination, for 2014’s Wild, the actress is now in the middle of what many are affectionately calling “the Laura Dern-aissance,” thanks to back-to-back scene-stealing roles as Renata Klein on HBO’s Big Little Lies and as the coveted Diane on Twin Peaks: The Return. While playing Diane comes with its own praise and mystique (“Laura Dern is a psyche on fire,” Evan Davis recently proclaimed at Decider), it’s as Renata that Dern truly shines.
HBO
The HBO series adapted from Liane Moriarty’s novel of the same name sees the actress reteaming with director Jean-Marc Vallee and Reese Witherspoon, both of whom she worked with on Wild. “I’ve only known Reese as my producer and [fellow] actress, both on Wild and now on this. [But] for me, it's an amazing gift,” Dern told ET of their reunion. Although she’s in a supporting role to Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley, who all deliver standout performances, Dern doesn’t waste a minute of screen time, leaning into Renata’s rage. And only she could believably start a mommy war, have loud bathroom sex, don an eye patch and still somehow make the villainous character likeable. “She’s just unapologetic, and there is something deeply refreshing about it,” Dern said of the role. In an interview with Backstage, which dubbed her “TV’s ‘It B***h,’” she revealed why it was so fun to play Renata: “It was about undoing what the audience felt about her as much as the people around her.”
In addition to the releases of The Founder and Wilson and standout episodes of The Last Man on Earth and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Dern will close out 2017 with Alexander Payne’s Downsizing and The Last Jedi. Not much has been revealed about the highly anticipated Star Wars sequel except that she’ll play “a prominent officer in the Resistance named Vice Admiral Holdo.” In January, she told ET that she was “having the time of my life” as a franchise newbie. Later, when the first trailer for the film premiered in April, the Internet was dismayed that Dern was nowhere to be seen. This prompted Vulture to shame the franchise for holding out: “We could all die in a nuclear war next week, never having glimpsed Laura Dern’s space look. Is that fair?” Kyle Buchanan wrote. (Luckily, Vanity Fair offered the next best thing.)
Of course, Dern laughs off the idea of a renaissance, telling Bustle that it “feels like a little bit of a coming of age.” And at 50, she’s seemingly defying the odds of what it means to be “a woman of a certain age” in Hollywood, hitting a career high in respect to work and notoriety -- and possibly earning a long-deserved Emmy win this September. But at the end of the day, Dern is just so damn good at what she does.
