I just love drawing families of fictional characters, its interesting to think of how each sibling would look. I try to make them different from one another but at the same time maintain familial similarities.
Jinzha resembles their mom, Muzha their dad, and Nezha's a good mix of both.
Also get ready with some sibling dynamic rant, mostly relation HCs by me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Enough with the parent child dynamic
I want sibling dynamic. Where these three come to terms on what happened between them. Specifically Muzha and Nezha's interaction is the one I want to see.
Tbh those two's fates in the myth reminded me of Hyakkimaru and Tahomaru in Dororo.
Like Nezha and Muzha had so much potential to gain solidarity with each other. Because Jinzha could never relate to them as the ignored or unwanted child. Muzha has that middle child stuggle fr.
Tumblr media
Muzha is the one so eager to gain their fathers favor trying to meet Jinzha's level . Nezha wants nothing from his father so he makes himself worse.
Muzha's frustration with Nezha is that Nezha is rebellious, disrespectful of their dad
Tumblr media
While Nezha's frustration to Muzha is that Muzha is so blinded and always struggling to achieve something so futile. Deep down he hates how Muzha is suffering this way but he wouldnt speak of it. This is why they always at odds.
They should make a movie focusin the Li brothers fr
Other than overusing the actual myths.
Fuck the ending from the original myth, they didnt even consider how the children felt from all the abuse. Not even mention of Muzha's death.
Enough Ao Bing, what about Muzha???
And the moral lesson is just about "respecting elders"?? The story still had so much to wrap up. How can you call this a family if there is some sort of hierarchal system. A family requires empathy to maintain that connection.
Tbh its kinda realistic
Families and siblings can still inflict trauma from each other .And a story based on reconcilation is a good way for this to be about family counselling.
I wanna see the "what ifs". It could be each brothers own story of self healing from the trauma caused on each other.
Maybe Im getting my hopes up too much, but it could be a development for them to forgive, start anew and an opportunity to connect and catch up on what they missed on each other.
Edit:
As for Jinzha he also has his own struggles as the eldest. Keeping up the station as the golden favored and perfect son. But its Asian family dynamics, which means hes in a lot of pressure. But he is mentally and emotionally strong. The brothers always busy on his studies ,future responsibilities and training to be able to spend time together. Their timetables seemed to be planned out to always not meet. Jinzha especially had less freetime. And if he ever came across any of his brothers, it was only one of them never both.
He doesnt mind being a buffer for the other two feuding but it does stress him out that it will never change. But he'll make sure to give time and attention to both of them as much as he can.
Other than keeping up his fathers expectations he also doesnt want to fail as a big brother to them🥺😭
Muzha and Nezha can see his efforts so they do not dare hold anything against him. Muzha still keeps his competitive attitude when Jinzha's around but accepts any offered kindness from Jinzha. While Nezha enjoys his company when he gets the chance.
Tumblr media
Also because I tend to hold on to this little bit of bonding😭🥺🥺Jinzha trying to be the best big bro
Thinking of the contrast in the future where Jinzha was tasked to torture Nezha destroyed me😭😭😭What did Jinzha even feel while he had to do it??
Also here some Nezha with his hair down again

I was looking into some idols my friend Pilgrim Sun had referred to me and I happened upon numerous idols of both Muzha and Jinzha.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ordinarily this wouldn’t be a problem, however Muzha is known primarily to use the Hooks of Wu and not melon hammers. Similarly, Jinzha is known to use a staff somewhat similar to Sun Wukong but is pictured to be using two swords. This may be a regional difference between China and Taiwan, but something for me to look into further nonetheless.
Images of idols of Nezha from Taiwan for reference (the first image is from Pilgrim Sun).

Can you tell me who are the sworn brothers of Erlang and Sun Wukong? Maybe Nezha too and Bull Demon King please 🤔
I’m not sure if Nezha has sworn brother honestly… he just has real brothers. At least that I know of.
Jinzha 金吒
Muzha 木吒
Wukong does have a LOT, pilgrims not included even if those are his junior brothers in Buddhism.
Bull Demon King 牛魔王
Peng Demon King 鵬魔王
Dragon Flood Demon King 蛟魔王
Snub Nose Monkey Demon King 禺狨王
Spiritual Macaque Demon King 獼猴王
Lion Demon King 獅駝王
Immortal Zhenyuanzi (became sworn in the journey) 鎮元大仙
Erlang has his 6 plum brothers!! (and Wukong)
Kang Anyu 康安裕
Zhang Boshi 张伯时
Li Huanzhang 李焕章
Yao Gonglin 姚公麟
Guo Shen 郭申
Naoken 直健
Sun Wukong (became sworn in their fight) 孙悟空
Bull Demon King is similar to Wukong's list just without Immortal Zhenyanzi. And actually he has a REAL brother that is Immortal Ruyi 如意真仙 who guards the abortion water.

Jinzha + Muzha: *Dragging their feet at a party, talking to friends.* Nezha(overstimulated and tired of their crap): Okay people! Let's get a move on! I'm not getting any younger here! Muzha: Well you're not getting any older either!

Sun Wukong: Guess what I'm doing tomorrow?
Muzha: Becoming a productive member of Heaven?
Sun Wukong: Bro. Come on.
Sun Wukong: Do you have the faintest idea, what it's like to be told you have been given a top job, only to find out out, that you're not only at the rock bottom of the shitty hierarchy, but also will never have the chance to climb up the ladder? They treated me like a fucking pet monkey! And if you think it's okay to treat people like that, fuck you.

I saw how some people use historical figures from Chinese mythology, folklore and religion for NSFW, literally, turning them into their own OC's, and I was wondering, what do you think of that? Because it seems like they just took them, and didn't do more research asking the question of "is that right?"
As per your second question for me I will leave that unaddressed and instead invite you to discuss those matters properly in private, especially if this answer is dissatisfying.
I personally do not care much if NSFW or suggestive content of such deities exist (except for the child Nezha, leave his child form out of this.) or that it’s being produced in the first place. The numerous Chinese social media sites like LOFTER, Douban (豆瓣) and Xiaohongshu (小红书) feature fan art of Daoist deities like Nezha and Er’lang in these kinds of situations. Fan fiction of these deities are similarly of the same attitude. It has nothing to do with if proper research has been conducted, especially in the case of Er’lang Shen who cannot act on romantic feelings even if he wanted to.
It feels to me that there’s an exception regarding Chinese deities and folk heroes when deities of other religions have been sexualized. This screams of not only hypocrisy but of ignorance in being offended on behalf of the Chinese. In the few months I was active in the LMK fandom I’ve come to realize a majority of the other Chinese in the fandom are either adopted or second generation immigrants with no real cultural background; and as a consequence have severely inaccurate biases on matters like this because they aren’t aware of how insignificant this is.
I’m admittedly not active within the LMK fandom anymore and as such I don’t know what’s happening there unless someone is compelled to talk about what is going on. But it feels to me that as per usual people are holding Journey to the West as the be all end all on numerous fronts when the books really cannot and should not be heralded as such. Moreover, it’s strange that the fandom is completely okay with sexualizing Sun Wukong, the Six Eared Macaque, and the Golden Winged Peng while any other character is unacceptable.
I assure you that numerous derivative works feature Chinese deities in relationships and sexual contexts, even Tang Sanzang is featured in movies or television shows with a romantic partner despite relationships of that nature betray his Buddhist faith.
I’ve been considering making a post about the cultural dissonance that’s happening here and various attitudes or opinions other people have because they lack the cultural context to realize how insignificant and misinformed a lot of this “discourse” actually is.
What is it about Chinese mythology that sets it apart from Nordic or Greco-Roman mythology in these ways? Why is it perfectly acceptable to sexualize Loki or Achilles, but not someone like Muzha (who was a very real person that became deified, in the same fashion as Guan Yu, as who he was studying under was seen as an incarnation of Guanyin)?
I don’t think this type of thinking will ever make sense to me as a true testament to how different the fandom (especially on Twitter) and myself feel about this matter.

Do you know of a website where a family tree of the gods can be found? Or what gods are related to others?
I can't say that there is one because most gods are just not related. Sure some gods have family relations like Nezha, Erlang, or the Dragons Kings but they are considered more of the expectation than the rule.
I've said this before but how gods work in Chinese mythos is that anyone who cultivates and is able to train under an immortal and maybe perhaps gaining enough merit to go to heaven and get godhood gets to be a god. There are rarely any family relations involved also due to the fact that gods are not allowed to get married or have kids, the Jade Emperor being an expectation to this rule. Sure mortals can live in the lower levels of heaven and have families but they are not gods either. Or that gods had families before they became gods like Nezha's family. Or that they broke the law like Erlang Shen's family.
Needless to say, I would say give up trying to find a family tree since that is too far-fetched between the thousands of different gods and so few being related at all.
But I can say it the biggest known families are the Li Family with Jing Li, Jinzha, Muzha, and Nezha and their mother who most likely passed.
Tumblr media
The Yang family with the sister of the JE being Yuan, Erlang Sheng, Sansheng Mu, and there was Yang Jiao but he passed away and their father passed as well. This makes Erlang Shen the JE's nephew and Sansheng Mu his niece.
Tumblr media
And maybe Jade Emperor and his Daughters like Weaver girl who had a husband and two children but the Jade Emperor and Queen Mother who are to said to have many children so there isn't even a concrete number there, just that there is a lot.
There is also the Main Dragon Kings. The West, South, North, and East King Dragons are all brothers with an off-handed sister mentioned in Xiyouji. East and West Kings seem to have about three sons each and a daughter each as well (not sure about the South or North Kings but most likely children as well) and the Mother Dragon had like nine sons I believe. Not really gods but still a family that are immortal.
Tumblr media
There are definitely a lot more I am just unaware of really. Most legends I know are more stand-alone without any mentions of the family besides mortal parents when they ascend to godhood. There are a few cases I see maybe certain gods being considered brothers and sisters. These are just the ones I really know and I hope that helps a little even if you won't find more family relations.

Nezha: You didn’t have to kick me!
Muzha, whom mistook Nezha for a random yaoguai: You’re right. It was an entirely voluntary act on my part.
He just might have kicked Nezha regardless. And then got scolded by Guan Yin for the act of violence.
