Book Recs Wanted!
I have recently noticed that I'm drawn to the sub-genre of fantasy books that involve a person, or group of people, who secretly discover a huge magical secret that they do not fully understand and will never fully understand. So yes, fantasy books, but mostly 'other world' books and whatever the opposite of books with 'a good magic system' are. I know some people are into that, but I always avoid books where the magic makes sense, I like it to be confusing and oblique and mysterious. Ditto books with a grizzled anti-hero protagonist, not interested.
Examples of this I've enjoyed include:
The Magician's Nephew by CS Lewis - where Uncle Andrew has learned a few shreds of information from an elderly relative about magic. He then experiments and plots for years and finds the doorway to the wood between the worlds without having any real knowledge of what he has found or what to do with his discovery and gains no benefit from it.
Piranesi by Susanna Clarke - (spoiler), where a group of academics and hangers-on under the thrall of an outsider anthropologist find the way into a world hinted at in pre-historic texts. I love how the implications of this discovery are so huge, but those that can visit this world are incapable of fully exploring or sharing their discovery because of their competitive and sadistic natures. Even further worlds are hinted at but nobody visits them.
[Limited bits of] The Magicians by Lev Grossman - I haven't been able to re-read these books since they came out because I find many of the characters so unbearable, however, those sections where the students who fail to get into the college try to piece together magic on their own, or where the Chatwin children find their way into Fillory, or particularly where Quentin attempts to create his own world at the very end, are very compelling.
[Bits of] Fairy Tale by Stephen King - I found the fantasy world itself fairly irritating, but the way into it was great, and the discussion of how the fantasy world would likely be exploited if the knowledge was spread further was something I hadn't seen before.
Little, Big by John Crowley - I love how the existence of Faerie is taken as a matter of fact by the Drinkwater family, but there's no rhyme or reason to how it 'works'. It's unclear what exactly is going on half the time and all is enjoyably dream-like.
I also intent to give the Gormenghast books and Mordew a go soon, as they seem up my alley, and I think I've read all the Lovecraft stuff in this vein. I always liked the Lovecraftian bits of the Discworld book Moving Pictures too, which was my favourite as a kid- I like when the magical discovery gets too real and everyone just runs away, realising it's better left alone.
Does anyone else enjoy these tropes and have a book or two to recommend?

2024 comics post
broooooooooooo. what the fuck HAPPENED.
the actual cause of all this: i read some really funny fic by ao3 user deadchannelradio, then i got emma to watch some old teen titans with me, then we watched the under the red hood movie, then i read some more fanfiction, almost entirely bad, then i caved and checked what the public library had available to borrow comics-wise. which turned out to be a lot. and then i bought the DCU subscription. and now here we are. this is going to be in approximately chrono order, and there will be no bolded recommendations. read only what big 2 comics you can justify to god.
tom taylor's nightwing, vols. 1-5 (issues 78-105 i think) plus fear state. my first foray back into big 2 comics since my mcu-era marvel situation in high school and college. haha, these are kinda cute, i thought. simplistic, but the art is gorgeous, i said. i would be happy to buy these as floppies at my local store, i theorized. like some kind of idiot. like some kind of naive child.
batman/superman: world's finest, #1-ongoing. waid and mora just too fucking good. i love nonsense, and to put nonsense in my mouth. would actually consider buying the first volume as a tpb it's so fun except for the massive, classically racist, unforced L of making another culture's normal nuanced folk hero (ne'zha) into a demon from hell for just like, no reason. hello? also love mark waid just doing whatever the fuck he wants with the kingdom come continuity. it's his house. no one can stop him. still reading this one as new issues go up on DCU.
world's finest: teen titans, #1-6. loved this also. i also haven't read any og teen titans (emma read all of pre-crisis NTT while i was reading nightwing, so the early children remain firmly in her realm of expertise) but she also agreed that it was cute. waid is just fun. like what are we supposed to do.
shazam 2023, #1-6. see above re: waid and his powers. big shout out to dan mora, as ever, but BIIIIIG shout out to colorist alejandro sanchez, who i truly think made this arc. girl those WATERCOLOR EFFECTS!!
robin 2021, #1-17. read this and super sons at about the same time, officially dipping my toe into the damian waters. solid, loved the issue of all the other robins chasing after him, him and dick love each other for REAL. i also like his little goth girlfriend, and his manga habit. felt like a kinda ham-fisted attempt to give damian his own story without being willing to set him up with his own status quo, a la bludhaven, but what can you do.
super sons, #1-16. children's comics for sure, but with a surprising amount of blood in them? wasn't quite certain of the marketing angle on that, but i LOVED jon and damian they are BABIES. i also like every time clark is like, my son, please, never listen to damian. his father is a lunatic. for sure never listen to his father either. that was cute. shame this was cut so short lmao.
tim drake: robin, #1-6. offensively, offensively bad. i didn't even really know tim yet but this was like. please christ in heaven gay people have to be worthier of better comics than this.
batgirl 2000, #1-37. i know this is widely-loved, but it actually didn't get me until like #12 or so? if that? i love cass, but the art was rough for me, and it couldn't carry me for the early non-verbal comics. her shit with shiva was great tho. cass you are fully insane my girl
under the red hood and lost days. ICONIC!! JASON TODD MY RATIONAL KING!!!
robins: being robin. did not like this. trite. also did not like dick's manbun: a real issue.
batman: year one. oughhhhh what if the classics are good actually. and unfortunately. mazzucchelli and lewis are so fucking good, like lewis in particular..... what even is left to be said. the art alone is Just That Good. also bruce wayne and jim gordon are kissing with tongue for real
robin: year one. mmmmmm good. dick grayson your problems. also i still love harvey dent. possibly my favorite batman villain. symptom of having watched a lot of batman begins/read my one random copy of the long halloween an extensive number of times as a teen
batgirl: year one. had some great moments, but did not like it nearly as much as robin y1. i do think this is due to the sexism. i like when babs punched infant dick in the solar plexus tho!
batman: urban legends - specifically the cheer arc with jason. i really liked this but i'm not sure i'll feel the same in a year or so. i think this was a pretty deft way to get jason to drop lethal violence without betraying his own justified belief in the power of lethal violence (rational king), and thus bring him back into the family fold, but of course bringing him back into the fold is itself a fraught project, and his character as a whole is so uncertain (as i understand) since the new 52 so like. i think it did what it was trying to do quite well (and i loved how insane bruce appeared! compared to jason!) but should it have been trying to do all that? an open question!
devin grayson's gotham knights, #1-24. WELL AS IT WOULD HAPPEN THESE ARE MAYBE THE BEST BATCOMICS I READ ALL YEAR. listen i am so aware of devin grayson's many sins. but these are the original "what does it mean for bruce to have all these fucking teenagers" comics, and, so far in my reading, they remain the undisputed best. everyone's just been rehashing her since, and it hasn't been nearly as good. she's got the touch (profound fandom-aligned insanities)
batman: murderer/fugitive. put an order in for the recently-released 1100 page $125 omnibus just this afternoon. It's Good.
robin vol 1: reborn (tim drake). idk the exact issues on this, collects tim's first few post-tlpod batman issues, plus his first miniseries. tim drake by god do i care you.
lmao okay the post editor is starting to lag like a motherfucker. posting this then putting the next half in a reblog

William Sanders Scarborough (February 16, 1852 – September 9, 1926) is generally thought to be the first African American classical scholar. Born enslaved, he served as president of Wilberforce University (1908-20). He wrote a popular university textbook on Classical Greek that was widely used in the 19th century.
He was born in Macon, Georgia to Jesse and Frances Scarborough, a free railway employee, and an enslaved mother. Laws prescribed that he inherit his mother’s status. His father was freed in about 1846 but remained in Georgia to be with his mother.
Despite prohibitions against educating enslaved, he was educated and had mastered the three R’s, geography, and grammar by the age of 10. He became an apprentice shoemaker and served as the secretary of a prominent Black association at an early age due to his level of education.
After the end of the American Civil War, he was able to complete his education at Lewis High School in Macon before attending Atlanta University for two years before enrolling at Oberlin College. He completed his BA at Oberlin. He completed his degree at Atlanta University - now Clark Atlanta University.
In 1921, President Harding appointed him to a position in the Department of Agriculture which he occupied until his death. He was working on an autobiography which wasn’t published during his lifetime. However, Michele Ronnick, a professor in the Classics Department of Wayne State University, found a copy of the manuscript in the archives of the Ohio Historical Society. Ronnick edited The Autobiography of William Sanders Scarborough: An American Journey From Slavery to Scholarship, which was published by Wayne State University Press with a foreword by Henry Louis Gates.
He was a participant at the London session of the second Pan-African Congress held in 1921. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

The Long Wait (Season 3) Chapter 18 Revelation (Sean & Lorelei’s POV)
Fandom: Grimm
Pairing: Sean Renard/OFC
The Long Wait Masterlist
A/N: They continue to track the serial killer. Meanwhile, Lorelei meets Monroe’s parents.
Nick and Hank stopped in to update him on the case. They also mentioned that they wondered if the case was wesen related. The two were headed out to check out the Burkhardt family books. Before they did, Sean asked they not involve Lorelei. She had sent him a message earlier letting him know she was getting another migraine and promised she was at home taking care of herself. Nick was concerned when Sean mentioned the migraines, but Sean assured him that they were keeping an eye on it.
Later that evening, Sean received another call from Sebastian. “Stefania Vaduva Popescu is in the castle.” Sebastian advised him.
“Are you sure?”
“She’s meeting with the Prince now. Do you know her?”
Sean glanced outside his office, making sure no one was on their way to see him. “I know of her. My mother knew her well. She’s the biggest black marketeer over there. Do we know if she’s had any contact with Adalind?”
“No, we don’t.”
“We do know that Adalind and Frau Pech were working together.” Sean said, getting out of his chair and started pacing around the room. “Frau Pech is probably dead. This explains how Adalind is getting her powers back.” Sean sighed. “And now Stefania is betraying Adalind and brokering the child to the Royal Family herself.”
“What do you want me to do?”
“I want you to get to Adalind before they do. We have no time to wait. You have to meet Meisner tonight. I’ll set it up from here.”
“What if I can’t get away?”
“Then find an excuse. Fake your death for all I care. Do not let them get to Adalind first.” There was a knock at the door. “I have to go.” Sean hung up and turned to face the door. “Yeah?”
Hank and Wu entered the office. “Captain, we got new intel on our cop killer.” Hank told him.
“Yeah? What is it?” Sean asked, walking around his desk towards them, as the door was closed as Wu placed a laptop on his desk.
“We canvassed every bank and business with a surveillance camera in a three-block radius of the hotel where the killer was staying.” Hank said as Sean came to stand behind Wu who was leaned over the laptop.
“And we got bupkis on the suspect.” Wu added, straightening up.
“However, a bank camera caught footage of students from Lewis and Clark College shooting a film. Their camera happened to be shooting across the street from the hotel parking lot when our suspect stole the ’97 Chevy Pickup.” Hank advised him.
“Which is why it took a little time to track down.” Wu said, as a leaned over the laptop again. “This is what I got.”
Sean leaned down to watch the video, which showed three people, including one dressed as an alien. “Seriously?” He asked, glancing at them.
“Just watch.” Wu told him, as he started zooming the image in to reveal a man with long straggly brown hair.
“Not much of his face.” Hank admitted.
“Still, those are the first visuals we’ve got of this son of a bitch.” Sean said, looking at Hank. “All right, get this out to all the agencies, now.”
“Yes sir.” Wu said as he grabbed the laptop. Both men exited his office in a hurry.
The next morning as soon as he arrived at work, Sean contacted Adalind to warn her. He wasn’t her biggest fan, but hopefully she would believe him. “Why are you calling me in the middle of the night?” She asked, sounding frustrated as she answered the phone.
“They’re coming to get you.”
“Who?”
“Viktor is sending Verrat agents to take you back to the castle and once you’re there, you’ll never leave.”
“How do you know that?”
“Because your friend Stefania was at the castle. She’s betrayed you. She works for Viktor, not you.” He told her.
“Why should I trust you?”
Sean paused for a moment. “Because I believe the child you’re carrying is mine. Not Eric’s. Viktor wants the child, not you.”
Adalind sighed. “What am I supposed to do?”
“Meisner is on his way, with Sebastian.”
“Sebastian?”
“Yeah, he works for me. Now, I suggest you leave with them as quickly as you can. They are your only chance.”
“Someone’s at the door.” Adalind told him, sounding worried.
“You remember what I once told you? You have to choose a side. Well, this is the time.” He ended the call and sighed. Hopefully the people on the other side of the door were Sebastian and Meisner.
Not long after his call with Adalind, Sean headed out with Nick and Hank to check out the murder of a park ranger. The victim may have fallen prey to their serial killer. Wu approached them as they arrived. “Not a good way to start the day.” Wu said as they got out of the car.
“Where’s the body?” Sean asked him.
“Over there.” Wu said, nodding his head to indicate which direction. “Some of it. Body’s kind of all over the place. Victim is Thomas Mart, works for the Forest Service, checking out an illegal campfire where a deer was poached.” As he led them towards the body, they passed a Chevy. “Reported it, was investigating. Call went dead. They sent out a team to investigate and found the Chevy pick up we’d been looking for, the one stolen from the hotel manager. Mart also reported seeing a Jeep here. Kansas plates, got an APB out on it.” They finally reached the body. What a mess. “That would be Mart’s right arm, left leg is over there in two pieces. Looks like animals got to him after the attack.” Wu suggested. “Well, I hope so. Hate to think this happened to him while he was alive.”
Nick turned to Wu. “You said there were two cars reported.”
“Yeah.”
“He couldn’t have driven both cars here.” Sean stated.
“That means there’s more than one killer.”
Sean glanced at him, in time to see Nick and Hank exchanging a look. Perhaps their theory about this being wesen related had merit.
Sean later heard from Nick that it had been a Wildesheer. Or, more specifically, three. He didn’t know all the details, but they were no longer a problem. Sean was surprised that even Nick had been able to take down three wildesheer. No doubt he had help, but still. Many had gone up against wildesheer, very few survived. Sean was glad to hear, that Nick Burkhardt was one of the few to live to tell the tale. When he arrived home that evening, Lorelei had asked him about the case. It seems that Nick had been discussing it, and his theory about it being wesen related, with Juliette, who in turn spoke to Lorelei about it. Sean learned that it had been Monroe and Monroe’s father who helped Nick take down the wildesheer. Lorelei had seemed a little distress that the wildesheer had been targeting those considered to be warriors. It seemed Lorelei had remembered reading about wildesheer, and knew how bad there were. Sean had spent the rest of the evening assuring her that Nick was ok and that Sean himself had not been in any danger. Maybe he should make sure her family was more cautious about what they shared with her. At least until the baby was born.
***Lorelei’s POV**
As Lorelei pulled up in front of Monroe and Rosalee’s, the night after Nick’s battle with the wildesheer, she felt a little nervous. She had been invited to have dinner with Monroe’s parents before they left town. Lorelei guessed Monroe was hoping it would pave the way for good interactions at their wedding. Monroe had assured Lorelei that his parents were aware of her existence and that she would be in attendance. Not seeing either Nick or Juliette’s cars, Lorelei surmised that she was the first one to arrive. With a sigh, Lorelei got out of the car. When she made it to the door, Rosalee opened it. “Lorelei. I’m so glad you’re here.” She said, pulling her in for a hug.
“That bad.” Lorelei whispered to her.
“Eh.” Was Rosalee’s reply before pulling away. She slid her arm through Lorelei’s and led her into the living room, where an older couple were standing awkwardly near the table set up in the living room. “Bart, Alice. This is Lorelei Burkhardt. Nick’s younger sister.”
The couple looked at her warily, before briefly woging. Lorelei kept a warm smile on her face. “It’s nice to meet you both.” Lorelei told them.
Bart nodded slightly, while Alice offered her a tentative smile. “You too dear.” She said, as her gaze dropped to Lorelei’s belly. “Oh my, you look like you’re ready to pop.”
“Mom.” Lorelei heard Monroe yell from the kitchen.
Lorelei chuckled. “It’s fine Monroe. Leave your mom alone.” She told him, before looking back at Alice, a smile on her face. “I’m 30 weeks, so still a little bit to go. But you never know.”
Alice nodded understandingly. “No, you don’t. They come when they’re ready to come.”
Lorelei rubbed her belly. “Now, I don’t mean to be rude. But I need to use the bathroom. My child is kicking my bladder.”
“Oh I remember that.” Alice said with a slight chuckle.
“Be honest with me, is my bladder ever going to be the same?” Lorelei asked her. She heard a snort from Bart and a glance at him showed a hint of a smile on his face.
Alice looked at her sympathetically. “I’m afraid not dear.”
“Damn. Oh well. I shall be back.”
By the time Lorelei returned, Nick and Juliette had arrived. Eventually, dinner was ready. Lorelei opted to sit at the end between Monroe and his dad, mainly due to the fast route to the downstairs toilet. Lorelei had checked with Bart, to see if he didn’t mind. He simply shrugged and pulled out her chair for her. Dinner was awkward, to say the least, as everyone ate in silence. “Can I have the peas please?” Juliette asked Rosalee, who passed them over. After serving herself peas, Juliette glanced around the table. “So, this wedding stuff is pretty exciting, huh?” She looked at Monroe and Rosalee. “You guys set a date yet?”
Out of the corner of her eye, Lorelei saw Bart bit the side of his cheek for a moment before he woged. Monroe, Alice and Rosalee followed. Nick jumped back out of his seat. “What?” Juliette asked, looking at him in surprise.
Oh god, this could get out of control. Lorelei thought to herself. Think fast. “Ahhh.” She cried out, grabbing her stomach. She felt eyes on her, and then a hand on her left arm. “You alright?” Bart asked. Lorelei looked up to see he was no longer woged, and glance around showed no one else was either. They were all looking at her in concern. Lorelei straightened up. “Yeah, just trying to break the tension.” She said, grabbing her water glass. “Nick, put the knife down.”
Monroe snorted and started laughing, as everyone else followed. “You got a weird sense of humour kid.” Bart told her.
Lorelei shrugged. “Yeah, well. It worked.” Bart shook his head, but she could see the smile still on his face. Lorelei smiled, as something occurred to her. “I know something that you two could bond over with Nick. Not being overly happy with your loved one’s soulmate.”
Alice looked at Nick. “You aren’t a fan of your sisters’ soulmate?”
Nick had dropped the knife and sat back down by this point. He sighed. “I have good reason to be.” He said slowly, giving Lorelei a pointed look.
“And I acknowledge that.”
“I don’t trust him.”
“I know.”
“Who is this guy?” Bart asked, looking around the room. “Why don’t you trust him?”
“Well, for one, he had our aunt killed.” Nick said.
“She’s twenty and he is in his early forties.” Rosalee added.
“He’s a zauberbiest, but weirdly, also a Royal.” Monroe included.
“He’s also Nick’s boss.” Juliette piped in.
Bart and Alice glanced at each other, while Lorelei shrugged. They had summed that up pretty well. “Ok.” Alice said slowly, mulling over the information she had just received. She looked at Lorelei. “So, your baby has Grimm and wesen genes? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that happening.”
Lorelei nodded. “Yep. This baby won the genetic lottery. Which one will she be? We’ll have to wait and see.”
Bart looked at her. “He’s twenty years older than you?” He asked loudly, seeming more bothered by that than anything else. Even the Grimm and wesen part.
Rosalee threw her hands up. “Thank you.”
“See…common ground.” Lorelei said, picking up her knife and fork to continue eating. There was a moment of silence, before everyone else followed suit. There was still some awkwardness, but it was far less awkward than it had been. And there was conversation now. Sure, she had offered up her soulmate as the proverbial bait, but it paid off in the end.
***Sean’s POV***
Sean kept glancing at the clock. He wasn’t used to waiting for Lorelei to come home. She was usually here when he arrived. However, this evening Lorelei had gone over to Monroe and Rosalee’s house to have dinner and meet Monroe’s parents. Sean was apprehensive as Lorelei herself had told him that Monroe’s parents were not happy that not only was their son engaged to a fuschbau, but also friends with Grimms. He knew she was safe. Not only because he could trust that her family would protect her. But she had sent him a message, stating she was on her way home. Still, he wouldn’t be satisfied until she was in his arms.
He heard the front door open and close. Moment later Lorelei entered their bedroom, her face brightening, as it always did whenever she saw him. “Hi.” She said, sitting on the edge of the bed to kiss him before turning to remove her shoes.
“How did dinner go?” He asked.
Lorelei gave a laugh. “It was interesting, to say the least.” She told him, before turning on the bed to face him. “I got there first. I can see why Monroe invited me. This...” She gestured to her belly. “…is a conversation starter. But then Nick and Juliette arrived, and it got awkward again. Juliette tried breaking the ice by asking about the wedding. But then Monroe’s dad, Monroe, his mom, and Rosalee all woged. Nick jumped up, carving knife in hand. So, I faked pain to try and break the tension.”
Sean chuckled. “Did it work?”
“It did. And then to show they had common ground…I may have pointed out…that…they were all not fans of their loved one’s soulmates.”
Sean raised an eyebrow. “Really.”
Lorelei nodded. “Yeah, I kind of threw you under the proverbial bus.” She said, looking at him guiltily. “But it worked. The rest of the evening was great. Monroe’s parent’s have adopted me. And may be giving you a talking to at Monroe and Rosalee’s wedding.”
“I’m invited to Monroe and Rosalee’s wedding.”
“Well, yeah. As my plus one. They know we are a package deal.” She told him.
Sean smiled at her, before pulling her into his arms. “You are amazing. Only you could walk into a room with two wesen with deep prejudices and walk away with them in love with you.”
Lorelei blushed and shrugged. “Yeah, well. I was just being myself.”
“Exactly.” Sean told her.
A/N: So, I will end it there. I love the dinner scene at the end of this episode. I decided to adjust and add to it. I’m beginning to realise I have given Lorelei a superpower. To win over almost anyone. Also, Sean will be telling Lorelei about Adalind in a few chapters. Don’t worry, there will be no breaking up though. Let’s be honest, Lorelei had overlooked worse. But she will be upset for a bit.

LÉGENDES DU JAZZ
STANLEY CLARKE, L’IMPERTURBABLE
‘’That's one thing that an artist can't do -if any creative person starts listening to other people, he goes down."
- Stanley Clarke
Clarke expliquait: "The bass was tall and I was tall; it was similar to a violin and a cello, which was the direction I was taking anyway, so I started playing the bass."
Comme le critique Mikal Gilmore l’écrivait dans le magazine Rolling Stone: "During his tenure as bassist for Return to Forever, Clarke established himself as one of the most prodigious instrumentalists in modern music: an exceptionally nimble, resourceful electric and acoustic bassist.’’ Pour sa part, Joachim Berendt avait commenté dans son ouvrage The Jazz Book: From New Orleans to Rock and Free Jazz : "Stanley Clarke combines [Miroslav] Vitous's fluidity with Oscar Pettiford's 'soul.'"
‘’You can see, if you study the music, the way certain influences culminate in one player. Prior to me, there were so many types of bass players – acoustic bass players and electric bass players. Larry {Graham} was really a strong force. To many of us in the bass community, we all love Larry and look up to Larry as someone who innovated something. There were a lot of them: James Jamerson, even Paul McCartney – he was one of the first melodic bass players. In the jazz world, Charlie Mingus, Scott LaFaro, Ron Carter. I think when I came along, having listened to all of these different players, it was natural for all of these things to have this interesting convergence in my world. It’s funny, you don’t really think of it so much when you’re a player. Really, to be quite honest, I never thought of myself at first as someone who was trying to liberate the bass. It was only years later, around the time of the School Days album, that I started championing the whole idea of bass liberation.’’
Décrivant l’influence que Pastorius avait eu sur son jeu, Clarke avait précisé: ‘’I remember, I was so happy when Jaco Pastorius came on the scene. Then I didn’t feel alone. When you’re trying to do something out there, it’s always nice to have a friend, someone with similar ideas. I know many people thought that Jaco and myself would be sort of natural adversaries, but it was actually the opposite – the complete opposite. He understood what was happening with the bass: The instrument had to move forward.’’
Il expliquait: ‘’You can go to school now to learn how to play the electric bass. When I was younger, there was no literature out there for studying the electric bass. All of those early records that you’re hearing, I was only playing electric bass on the side. I was really an acoustic bass player. I just sort of developed that stuff, like most of us at that time, by picking the instrument up and doing what I could.’’
Comme Clarke l’avait déclaré dans le livre Jazz-Rock Fusion de Les DeMerle publié en 1988: "Years ago there was a fixed idea that bass players played background, and bass players have this particular theme--kind of subdued, numb, almost looking numb, and just to make a long story short, I wasn't going for any of that." Comme Clarke l’avait expliqué au magazine Rolling Stone: "I've always been more drawn to melodic than rhythmic playing... I had all these melodies running around in my head, all this knowledge of classical music I was trying to apply to r&b and jazz, and I decided it would be a loss in personal integrity just to be a timekeeper in the background, going plunk plunk thwack thwack."
‘’This is one of the greatest things that happened to me. It was just fun. I had this house on Long Island, and I was living out there with my wife. There was this knock on the door, and I looked out the window and there was this long limousine. This guy got out with this rooster haircut – that’s what I used to call them – and it was Jeff Beck. He knocks on my door, and I didn’t know much about him. I had definitely heard his name, but I hadn’t really gotten into his history. He comes in, and he has this really heavy accent. He’s telling me he was playing in town, and somebody gave him my address. He came over and he wanted to meet me, because he was playing a song from one of my albums. He just took a song from the first album, called “Power,” and he was playing it live. He wanted to meet me. We talked for about an hour, then he got back in the car and he left. That led to him playing on my second album, on a song called “Hello Jeff.” I called him and said: ‘Hey do you want to play?’ It was like that.’’
Décrivant sa collaboration avec le groupe Return to Forever, Clarke avait précisé: ‘’There’s a connection there that is much like the relationship between twins. Certain things, you just know the other guy is going to say this, or do that. Chick is like a big brother to me. I have known him for a long time. We’ve done a lot of things together, and Lenny is the same way.’’
Of all of the recordings I’ve played on, those two records are among the most memorable. We went down to this island, and I hung out with Paul for a couple of weeks. I really, really had a lot of fun. He’s a very melodic player. Melody just comes right out of him. That’s only natural for him to play the bass like that. He does it without thinking. He’s a writer who sings songs, so it was only natural when he plays the bass, his lines would be very melodic.’’
En 1985, Clarke avait fondé The Stanley Clarke Band.
Clarke avait aussi écrit la musique des films Boyz n the Hood (1991), Passenger 57 (1992), What's Love Got to Do with It (1993), Poetic Justice (1993), Romeo Must Die (2000), The Transporter (2002), First Sunday (2008), Soul Men (2008), The Best Man Holiday (2013), Barbershop: The Next Cut (2016).
Commentant l’approche très ‘’métallique’’ de son jeu, Clare avait précisé: "I found from plucking the strings in various ways that just the slightest movement can change your whole sound.’’
I pluck mainly with three fingers. I have certain patterns that I can only play with four fingers. Sometimes when I get to those real fast runs that just fly, they'll be a fourth finger in there to help play it."
Il précisait: "I'm writing a book on acoustic bass, maybe three or four volumes. It's going to be the full thing--everything that anyone would want to know about the acoustic bass."
Décrivant sa philosophie de la musique, Clark avait déclaré: "I don't feel I should have to make music to satisfy anyone. But I do feel that one of an artist's fundamental duties is to create work other people can relate to. I'd be a fool to do something nobody else was going to understand."
Mikal Gilmore écrivait dans le magazine Rolling Stone: "Clarke has seemed to temper his talent, opting instead to play fairly prosaic, overbusy variations of rhythm & blues and even heavy-metal music." Commentant une collaboration de Clarke avec Duke et Sonny Rollins, Chris Albertson du magazine Stereo Review avait déploré: "Pianist George Duke and bassist Stanley Clarke, men of great jazz potential who were bitten by the chart bug before they could show us more than the tip of their talent, here prove that they have spent too much time in fusionland.’’ The title certainly tells you what to expect. But if there are any doubts, note that the album was 'produced and directed' by Stanley Clarke... Jazz? Forget it."
Lorsqu’un critique du magazine Down Beat avait demandé à Clarke si un musicien avait déjà changé son fusil d’épaule en raison des critiques de la presse, il avait simplement rétorqué: "I've seen guys do that, and I've seen them go right down the drain, too. That's one thing that an artist can't do--if any creative person starts listening to other people, he goes down." Déterminé à continuer d’explorer différents styles, Clarke avait défendu le caractère éclectique de sa musique en ces termes: ‘’It would get boring for me if I just did one thing and played just one type of music for the rest of my life. I don't think I could take it." Dans une entrevue accordée au magazine Rolling Stone, Clarke avait tenu à préciser: "I know it upsets some people, but I could never be a conservative jazz musician."
I used to think of Stanley Clarke as one of the defectors, a jazz man drawn away from his art by the waving of the green. Now I am inclined to think that I did Clarke an injustice." Caractérisé par un remarquable charisme et par une grande présence sur scène, Clarke avait inspiré le commentaire suivant à Bill Milkowski du magazine Down Beat: "Clarke remains the same crowdpleaser he always was, an engaging presence with a flashing smile, playing up the rock theatrics during his explosive solos."

another procrastinask: who do you think knows about kendall and stewy?
Really good question. I've actually thought about this quite a bit before. I'm guessing you're asking about their families specifically, and kenstewy's college relationship - and I think that if he told any of the Roys at all during that time, it would probably be Connor. Since he could obviously never tell his parents, and Connor often took on a father-role for the siblings, I could see Ken confiding in him about it (again, if he told anyone in his family at all during that time). Like, I'm thinking about how in Dundee, when Connor shows up at his hotel room, Kendall jokes around and says the stuff about his and Jennifer's great psychosexual expedition and them being the Lewis and Clark of fucking or whatever - and to me, that scene really highlights how, as much as Kendall seems to forget he's not the eldest son sometimes, there is an annoying-younger-brother quality and an ease to him when he's talking to Connor. So I feel like he could maybe have opened up about him and Stewy's relationship to Connor at some point back then.
There's also another aspect to this, tbh. Since Connor was never taken seriously as a competitor for the Top Job by Logan (and therefore by the siblings as well), there is way less pressure to not show any 'weakness' in front of him, the way Ken and Roman for example were conditioned to think about each other, by Logan. And the way that the Roys think and operate in general, but also think/talk about relationships, they're either seen as conquests (specifically the way Roman talks about them - how he becomes interested in Tabitha after repeatedly saying Dad would totally go for her, how he congratulates Kendall on dating Naomi, or calls Tom a trophy husband, and how he desperately tries to 'achieve' that sort of relationship but fails) or a sign of weakness (specifically the way Logan sees them - saying 'you're marrying a man fathoms beneath you, because you're afraid of being betrayed' to Shiv, calling Ken 'cuntstruck' because he genuinely likes Naomi and feeling attacked when he brings up him and Rhea's relationship, asking Roman if he needs to get straightened out after learning about him liking Gerri, etc. And I do think this goes for any type of relationship, which is why he's so deathly afraid of actually getting close to or opening up to people, including his own wife - but there's obviously yet another layer to it, when it comes to his children and their possible queerness, which weaponizes in an even more specific and sinister way). Since Connor was never considered as The Heir, his relationships were never scrutinized by Logan in the same way (he was, of course, in turn neglected, so it's not like he was better off, or anything. His abuse was just different), so the siblings would probably not have felt that same need to prove something to him/not show any weakness, the way they did with each other, therefore perhaps making it possible for Kendall, to open up to him, or at least more so than to Roman for example.
Lastly though, I do also think that with the distance to Logan in the time between s3 and s4, they all became more open to talking about that stuff, based on how easily Shiv asks Ken in The Munsters whats up with him and Naomi, or how Ken references 'gerr-bear' to Roman, and how they offer to kill Tom for Shiv, ask her if she's okay when she's upset about Tom, etc. I definitely think the show is making a point about how much closer they've gotten by showing us they feel more comfortable with talking about their relationships after that time. So I could definitely see him telling them about him and Stewy during that period of time.

Henry Canyons "Not Today"
"Not Today" is the third video off Henry Canyon's 2018 album "Cool Side of the Pillow," produced by Matt 'Bones' Bowen and directed by Ryan Calavano.
LA based rapper, Henry Canyons, transcends your typical boundaries of hip-hop identity. The self-described Brooklinite-French-Jew took to music at a young age; from his training as a jazz saxophonist to his teenage years spent in Brooklyn ciphers, his melodic style and bilingual lyrical integrity reflect a diverse musical background. Canyons left for the West Coast in 2005 to attend Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. After graduating, Canyons moved to LA intent on following his passion for the artform. Since then Henry has worked on multiple projects, most recently his first solo mixtape, Vignettes. Upon its release in October of 2012, Vignettes–which features production from BoomBaptist–received cosigns from WordisBond, HypeFloats, Hip-hop.com and many other online publications. Since then, Canyons has been working on collaborative projects with French producers, Keor Meteor and Freddy Jay, as well as NYC producer Willie Green. Over the course of his career, Canyons has racked up over 30,000 views on YouTube, and has shared stages with Macklemore, Tash, Open Mike Eagle, Pigeon Jon, Blue Scholars, Billy Woods, and tons of local LA talent.
