The MLM hack list

Alright. So there are a bunch of MLM diet companies that make a shitload of money of of us and yet our obesity rates in developed countries are thru the freaking roof.

How many times have you gotten the messages on Facebook, Instagram or whatever and it's like: Hey girl, haven't seen you since high school, let's get coffee... OR... they just post the precopied message & ask about your goals, & proceed to add a flurry of hyperpositive social media messages, like my friend recently did to me.

Did anyone in high school like you? Not me! Do that screams danger from the start. I was horrendously bullied in elementary school. I was gone to a parochial school for a couple years so the only reason that I avoided constant bullying in high school was because... they forgot who I was.

Here are some ideas I stole from various companies, cheaper:

Herbalife: this company's stuff works, for 2 reasons- you replace 2 out of 3 meals with shakes. However, alot of people are not successful if they make their shakes at home and if they add in all the snack bars. People do, however, lose weight if they get their shakes from a "nutrition" shop. Why? Because they blend those shakes super thick with a metric shitton of ice & I think alot of them add sf pudding, which enhances the thickness. Also, you get an iced tea, normally with added fiber. So the answer is- you have 2 drinks that take a long time to finish AND give you added caffeine & fiber. So? Just do it at home: keep your shake calories low, make it extra large & thicker than a snicker, & follow with a caffeinated tea & add fiber to it. I like the herbalife brand but I order it off Amazon so I don't have to get the whole shpeel. Now brand has "prebiotic fiber" that is cheaper. There is also benefiber from Walmart. It is cheap, so why not?

Beachbody: you don't need to spend a billion dollars on protein shakes or meal replacement shakes. I do, however, love some of their workout systems.

Tai Slim: this company's great idea was the chocolate gluccomannon chews, I just didn't know ot at the time. I have tried to order it but have been unable to so maybe they don't make it any more. So my hack would be- the chocolate calcium chews, some gluccomannon tablets, & a large glass of water.

Modere: this company was all over tik tok & reels for awhile, while the reps were trying to schlep people into this scheme. The Golden Child was the liquid CLA chocolate, probably because it tastes like a chocolatey treat while it is actually a CLA supplement. CLA can be purchased at almost any health food store, way cheaper.

Plexus: the pink drink. More research needed on this, but I think it is just a fiber drink. Hack: gluccomannon powder & a Starburst all pink flavor packet.

Most of these companies often sell an associated "fat burner:" often something with caffeine, ecgc from green tea, etc. You can get something similar at a health food store for a fraction of the price. If you want something fancy, there is Ember from the Ambrosia Collective. Use the Google. MFINGCOO is a discount code that I think still works, but it isn't mine.

Buy In for then"tribe:" Weight watchers (not an MLM, just a diet culture sales supergiant but they still somehow acquire affiliates, idk if that qualifies as a True MLM), beachbody, herbalife are pretty cultish in nature-- they rope you into a bunch of meetings, calls, and online groups. If someone calls you to ask why you weren'tat Power Hour, you may have bought into a cult! It works by reprogramming certain thought & behavior patterns..... Basically a bunch of people are sharing ideas regularly and getting involved in their cultish antics.& promoting it on social media. (Example: OMG have you tried the new WW/herbalife/beachbody PROTEIN BAR?? Only $15 for 4!! What a deal! LINK IN MY BIO) You can do this on your own by finding your own people. You can get your own seminars by watching a lot of youtube. Anything that focuses on reprogramming you to cook at home and eat primarily whole foods will probably work. Join free groups. Disregard anything outside of what works for you ( I have to ignore a lot of dessert recipes because they cause bingeing for me).

Lipozene: pretty sure this is just gluccomannon. You can find gluccomannon tablets way cheaper at a health food store. Walmart also was carrying a generic version.

Hydroxycut: pretty sure the active ingredient here is HCA? I don't have a bottle currently to look. But isn't HCA just garcinia? So much cheaper at a health food store. I personally cannot take hydroxycut, it makes me RAGE. I like, get upset and freak out at work, so I don't even think I am willing to try it again.

It works: I think the skinny coffee would be comparable to the "slim coffee," which was cheaper but seemed to be chromium. You can just pick up a chromium supplement... & seriously, you can just drink coffee. Don't add calories to it.

Apple cider vinegar gummies: Just take shots of apple cider vinegar. You can buy a gallon at walmart, it will last a long time. Play with shot recipes, you can do good girl moonshine (ala Trim Healthy Mamma), & use it liberally for dressing recipes.

L-Glutamine: don't remember the company, but this is available at more health food stores, not for $100 a container.

Maybe I have bought so much shit so you don't have it. Is there an MLM company I missed? 🤔 let me know and I will check it out for future posts.

Remember- whatever you do, stay safe. Research your shit. Focus on your daily habits and remember that what you are eating outweighs almost any supplement you could buy. Eat whole food, walk, have an exercise routine & stop expecting a 30 day result for a body that took you 40 years (or whatever) to create.

I definitely don't think the ozempic trend is worth the cost, but if there is no other way for you & you have the money, it is worth a shot. Just don't expect your insurance to pay for it. Many insurance companies are currently not covering it, and I don't really know if they should consider it.

Surgery? If there is no other way and you want to, go for it.

The way that these things work though, is by changing what you are eating. Period. These are all systems to change what you ingest and you can change what you eat for free.

I am still on Nomorbidity & Alkemi from the Ambrosia Collective. I have not found suitable replacements for them but I am also not looking hard, they have a reasonable price point to me.

My June Reads

Storygraph introduced auto-generated graphics for sharing our reads by the month, which makes it much easier to do a review, and here I am! Sorry it's kinda pixelly, the settings on Storygraph aren't perfect yet but they're planning to add functionality.

I've been posting on the Duck Prints Press Book Lover's Server for a while, so everyone knows there that the answer to "how do you read so much?" is the library, but just to be clear, if it's a graphic novel, I got it from one of three libraries - either my local system, @queerliblib, or the Japan Foundation Library. The last two are both free-throughout-the-US Libby libraries and they've both been awesome.

Prose books, I usually own.

This was the most pages I've read in a month all year, and the second most individual books. There's actually one more book not pictured, as it wasn't on Storygraph and I opted not to add it.

In terms of potential queercoding I really don’t know how to read Dazai’s character because he exclusively talks about relationships in terms of being with a woman, even in official “interviews,” as opposed to the other characters who consistently use gender neutral pronouns. He even hints at a disinterest in men in the first chapter (though that varies based on the translation). I’m aware that some people suspect the irl author was bi but there is a great level of difference between the characters and the authors. And I somewhat doubt that Asagiri would consistently have Dazai show an interest in women/disinterest in men if he intended for him to be read as mlm

However, I quite honestly don’t know how else to read his dynamic with Chuuya. It could very much just be fan service but that…I don’t know, strangeness between them is very integral to their canon dynamic. They have a lot of romantic moments and are essentially soulmates. The dynamic may not be entirely positive but there’s no doubting those two are a perfect match. And then there’s also the fact that he enjoys being choked by Kunikida

At the end of the day it doesn’t matter to me that much, Dazai’s potential queerness isn’t one of the reasons I like him. It would be a nice bonus but straight, gay, bi, etc. it doesn’t really make a difference to me. I tend to write him as mlm even if it’s not a ship fic but I like him because of his arc and personality, not because of shipping (as opposed to some characters where their sexuality/romance plot line actually is one of the main reasons I like them). I see a lot of people call Soukoku queercoded though and I’ve read several analyses on it but I can never quite decide where I stand on that whole debate

I will say though, when analyzing this subject it’s important to keep in mind that Dazai is a liar. That man lies all the time, he tried to lie abt visiting his deceased friend’s grave. He laughed off being called a good person after his plan successfully saved an entire city. This bitch will do anything to escape vulnerability. So I don’t think it’s a stretch to say he’s lying about and/or exaggerating his love for women (or disinterest in men). He could simply be playing up a bit. It has been mentioned that he’s had relationships with women in canon tho so most likely he’s straight or bi (when it comes to fanon tho I love any variation of mlm Dazai)

You mean a pyramid scheme?

Well, the trouble with pyramid schemes, is they can be surprisingly tricksy even if you know what to look for. They're very good at reeling you in and convincing you it's different somehow than a pyramid scheme. See, it's shaped like a funnel and not a pyramid! Or you earn income based on how much you sell and then you can enter another tier!

A lot of people who would think they'd never get roped into a pyramid scheme can end up sucked into one if they're not wary.

But alright, let's do it.

Alice

Alice doesn't fall into this for a few reasons.

The first is that her gift stops her, she sees this venture won't make her money but will get her saddled with a shitty product she can't peddle fast enough to break even.

Alice is perfectly content playing with the stock market.

The second is that Alice wouldn't be interested. She has her own way of making more money than she could ever hope to being a salesman and she'd have no interest in selling the kinds of products that pyramid schemes usually do (which are generally mass produced, cheap, and rarely have any quality to them). Alice wouldn't think they're good products and would have no interest in trying to market them herself and sell them to others.

Bella

Doomed.

Give Bella the right pitch, (and many of these are aimed towards women trying to support themselves), and she's there selling what she believes is a great makeup product/clothes line/what have you and refusing to believe she's made a terrible mistake and been conned along with all these earnest other women.

Edward I imagine has to get rid of the product for her and get her out of the hole (Bella's pride never lives this down).

Carlisle

Carlisle's been in the human world long enough, interacted with it more than the others, and is generally very particular about how he should be viewed and seen that I don't see him biting.

"I am human doctor man" Carlisle says, and has no intention in pursuing any other means of income or anything that would make him not look like human doctor man who is definitely 39 why do you ask?

It's not even a matter of him being swayed or not, he's not listening close enough, and likely makes his earliest escape.

Edward

Edward's actually in a little danger in part because of his gift. The thing about pyramid schemes is that those in the lower tiers (even the mid tiers) aren't in the know. They may suspect it's a pyramid scheme, and that they're in too deep to get out, but it's the ones at the top who really planned the thing. The very low-level grunts generally believe it's a real company (it's how they get hooked and sucked in).

If Edward were to meet someone trying to hook him in (as you generally get rewards for recruiting others) then there's a chance.

Now, the chance is small, because like Alice, Edward's comfortable with his money and has 0 desire to work or be a salesman (notice Edward just goes to high school, then university and never goes off on his own or with one of the others to get a job).

That said, I could see Edward being tricked into believing it's a good product, a good cause, and more by people who earnestly believe it. More, because Edward doesn't really doubt his gift, it might not occur to him that these people are also being lied to or else are lying to themselves.

Edward also believes himself intelligent enough that he'd never fall for a pyramid scheme and so would be less wary of it.

Basically, still unlikely as Edward would never get dragged to one of these meetings or into it, but not impossible and much more likely than Alice.

Emmett

Doomed.

If he was taken to the right pitch, for the right product, even though he himself would never use it he'd think it'd be so cool that of course he should sign up. Hey, then he can make some dough for a change, how about that Alice.

It doesn't last long, though, as Rosalie tells him, "Honey, this is a pyramid scheme".

(It also doesn't last long as no one would ever pitch Emmett as he looks fucking terrifying and he's huge).

Esme

Esme's so nice, I could easily see her being essentially bullied into joining. The thing is, she actually doesn't get in too deep because she never depletes her initial stock and has no hope of doing so. Esme doesn't go out enough or interact enough with others to actually sell the product so the terrible makeup brand just... sits there...

She's out some amount of money, but she won't dig herself into the hole that usually happens in pyramid schemes where, with the taste of initial success, you just keep going.

Jasper

Jasper's too scary. The others are all too scary but Jasper's really too scary. He's never approached and if he was I imagine him staring dully at these human products not sure what he is supposed to do with them or how he's supposed to sell them with his face.

Renesmee

Doomed.

Renesmee has no idea how anything works and is ridiculously sheltered by the Cullens. I doubt 'theft' is even a concept she understands nor is 'money' for that matter. Now, this might help her, as she has no idea how to sell anything, but like Esme she probably gets conned into signing the dotted line and making the initial purchase because the nice salespeople tell her it's a great idea.

Rosalie

Rosalie has been through a lot and is naturally wary and skeptical of others. More, while liking to be the prettiest in the room, she doesn't seem all that weak to flattery from what we see of her. Rosalie would be immediately suspicious of anyone trying to sell her anything or get her to do something as she'll be immediately wondering what they get out of this and why they're trying so hard.

The Demons We Face | Chapter 19, The Wolf pt 2

Preview/Intro:

The firing of a gun.

Genya wakes up with a start. He'd slept lightly most of the night, a level of nerve keeping him from falling deep into rest. He trusted that Gideon would protect him while he slept, but… he didn't want to leave Gideon to potentially face a demon by himself… with a foreign weapon no less.

He looks around. Gideon wasn't the one to fire, that much was apparent. From where he was sitting, he likely would have fallen back onto Genya if only slightly with kickback. The shot would also be much louder if it had come from Genya's gun.

The silver haired man looks to Genya with wide eyes, as one more shot rings out into the night air.

They are both up, no words needing to be shared as they run into their plan A scenario.

The village comes into view and Gideon sprints ahead, his eyes locked onto a large shadow figure who has a civilian in its clutches. He's swift to draw back his hammer and aim for the head…

But he doesn't calculate for the beast's speed.

The drawback of not knowing an enemy fully before engaging was that one had to learn quickly amidst combat. The civilian's body snaps, killing them with a sickening crunch as the wolf demon ducks and snarls.

“FUCK!”

Gideon turns, whirling his hammer to use it's momentum to his advantage as he lands a hit. The wolf was right on him, the corpse forgotten but blood on its paws. The wolf towers over Gideon and Genya's height easily, comparable to Himejima’s height and built in muscle to match.

For just a moment as the silver haired slayer dodges attacks and relays on his own speed, he's thankful that Genya isn't in close combat.

Genya has chosen a rooftop, he scales it easily using fencing and grates conveniently stores on the side of the selected house. He prepares himself, laying flat to not draw attention and make the task more challenging… but he waited to take a shot.

Both fighters were fast… it would only take one false move to accidentally shoot Gideon. So as heart wrenching as it was, he had to wait.

Come on …

Teeth snap just shy of Gideon’s face. He uses the head of his hammer to thrust forward into the chest of the beast, ultimately making it stumble and sending him backwards, creating space for him to prepare a swing. Both charge in, Gideon violently connects the hammer into the wolf’s shoulder as it slashes him, before falling back.

He cries out in pain, a level of fury graveled into his throat. The cut isn't incredibly beep but blood spilled from him and the wolf sneers.

Before it can launch itself at Gideon again… two shots ring out of a double barreled shotgun. One connects with the neck, missing the head as Genya curses and reloads.

The wolf immediately whirls to face the shooter and snarls the most unworldly growl before charging him.

“NO!” Gideon ran after him, sluggish by his injury. Genya was finishing placing the rounds in and had just shut his gun when the wolf lept onto the roof.

Gideon was desperate. Desperate to give Genya more time… desperate to switch him places in an instant… but the only thing he could think to do was throw his hammer.

The claw sinks deep into its back. It howls in rage, furiously grasping for the lodged weapon and effectively breaking the handle in the process. It whirls to the now unarmed slayer on the ground, furious.

Genya shoots at close range before it goes back for Gideon, and draws his wakizashi to finish decapitation. Wild purple eyes flash to Gideon, who falls to his knees panting.

Genya hops skillfully down from the roof and runs to him. “How deep is the cut?! Let me see!”

Gideon leans back with a hiss of pain. “N-Not deep, just… fucking fresh. Hah…”

Genya looks closely, the blood is still coming out of the wound. If it wasn't that deep clotting would have been stopping some of it by now… he looks up to Gideon in concern.

“You may need stitches, the middle one is deep.” He says.

Genya's crow flies over from the forest and caws at the two boys. “Kakushi! Kakushi!! I'll get them!!”

Genya is looking around, slight panic building even though he was doing his best to stay calm. This was the world of a demon slayer, but he couldn't help but feel the same amount of hopelessness as back then…

Another loved one painted in blood… Gideon could have easily died had he been one step closer to the slash-

Gideon reaches to squeeze his shoulder. “I'll be okay. Look at me.”

Genya does so. His eyes show his fear, but Gideon smiles for his sake trying to reassure him. “I'll be okay baby.”

Genya lets it sink in for just a moment, and then gives a little nod.

“...I need to wrap this in the meantime. I need your help to do it.” Gideon says to him.

“Right! Okay- stay here, I'll- I'll go get a wrapping!!”

Gideon nods, and watches Genya disappear around the corner as he runs to look for bandages… that's when Gideon unmasks how badly it actually hurts.

He's pretty certain that the strike affected his ribcage as well. It was difficult to take in deep breaths. The Kakushi would arrive soon he was sure… they would know more about first aid than Genya and himself. He just…

Hated the scarred look on his lover's face. He should have been more careful. Should have continued to evade the wolf, but he got too close. And now he was defenseless, because his hammer was broken in the fight.

Another weapon he couldn't care for properly… tears sting the corners of his eyes as he silently relented… should he even be a demon slayer at this point? Was he more trouble than he was worth?

He shook his head a little. He couldn't loose it now. He couldn't have Genya come back to him in that state… not when he was trying to keep both of them calm just moments ago.

Genya returns with bandages. Villagers start to wander out of hiding as the ashes continue to drift from the downed demon on the rooftop. A young woman has run back to Gideon with Genya, offering to help him wrap.

Gideon winces in pain as his destroyed uniform top is carefully removed. The young woman begins to clean the wound as gently as she can, and Genya preps the wrapping. By the time they have his chest bound, the Kakushi arrive to take over…

Gideon passes out in a cart brought by the kakushi, exhausted…
