After a mission together, Jason takes one look at Dick's posture as he stares down at the city, and takes him to one of his favourite rage rooms.
Jason finds the dead body of a child he tried but couldn't save. Dick watches Jason punch a wall and tear at his own hair and manhandles him on a chair, shoves an icepack by his ribcage and teaches him to breathe.
It's okay. Your anger is not shameful. You don't have to be afraid of it, and there's no need to laugh and hide while it's boiling under your skin. You have a right to your own rage.
It's okay. Your anger is not violence, your emotions have not doomed you to be the worst version of yourself. You were not made for all this blood. You can live through the rage without letting it consume you.

Titan Evil Arcs Ranked
14. Roy - No one liked Roy’s evil arc. You didn’t like it, I didn’t like it, Roy didn’t like it, it erased all his characterization and put him on a path he hasn’t recovered from since. NOT ONLY THAT but
he was retconned with the worst anti-hero backstory possible. Yes, of course Roy Harper would be so want to “surpass Oliver Queen” that he would create a mercenary team called “Iron Rule” and then murder his own team bc they killed people. Also that stupid cap I hate it. This arc was character, fashion and competency assassination at the same time. Thanks Lobdell.
13. Garth - He doesn’t really turn evil, he just gets brainwashed and zombified a little. Personally, I think Garth deserves a little bit of time to go apeshit, but his arcs so far of getting murdered and zombified by his dead wife and girlfriend and getting brainwashed by his Scottish  water evil spirit girlfriend are not it. 12. Gar - Went crazy for some reason, became a really gross throw up monster, whatever, no one remembers it, he figures out how to be sane eventually Dick didn’t even let Gar figure his stuff out he needed to announce his wedding instead. 11. Lilith - Imagine getting rebooted into the new 52 just to be a minion torturing victims with your mental powers before a ripoff hunger games starring a ripped off young justice, but also it was just a dream. idk I wasn’t paying attention. 10. Terry - we all knew there was something up with him tbh the evil arc wasn’t a surprise. He’s only this high because I find it hilarious that dc made Mav Wolfman’s self insert get a restraining order for Donna so she couldn’t see her son, immediately got killed in a car crash with said son and then just come back in increasingly graphic evil dream sequences. Don’t write your self-insert into comics, kids. 9. Kory - She gets to look cool when she’s evil but that’s it. Got killed by her sister in JLO and she wasn’t even her own evil person! She was taken over by Darkseid. Slightly cooler in flashpoint but didn’t even get to shine cause she got killed in a gasoline explosion :///. She can explode into a supernova I feel like she should be more powerful when she’s evil! 8. Wally -  Yes, he manipulated the entire justice league and framed innocents for a murder he committed, and yes he watched every single superheroes trauma therapy confessions, at least when he murdered Roy he put their dead bodies together bc friends. 7. Joey  - Listen, no one liked Titans Hunt, You didn’t like Titans Hunt, none of the Titans liked Titans hunt. Joey wasn’t even in control of him being evil and he kidnapped all the titans and kills a bunch of them, doesn’t even succeed in taking over the world and he does with an evil organization it in matching fur suits!? There are better ways to come out as a furry, Joey. At least Gar doesn’t make all his EVERYONE wear the same fur suits. Points for the homoerotic tension with Dick tho I guess. Also the idea of him having the trauma of everyone he possessed could have been cool but they bombed it so rip. 6. Hank - Listen, listen, I know the monarch story line is dumb as shit and a retcon because dc was mad everyone figured out who monarch was supposed to be but I can’t help it its so funny. fr imagine you’re Hawk, your brother and crime fighting partner is dead, as a result you get blacklisted in twelve countries because you keep beating people up. You get a new crime-fighting partner that is able to stop you from getting blacklisted in more countries, a villain named  monarch seemingly kills her. You kill the villain, SIKE! It turns out you were monarch the entire time! Time to be evil, I guess. You join Hal Jordan because he’s vibing as Parallax and then you create an alternate dimension in order to train a fake version of the titans as sleeper agent assassins for the time crisis or whatever idk. You find Terra alive and you just add her to the team?? You brainwash some dude into thinking he’s Dick Grayson to be the leader of the team for some reason even tho u hate Dick Grayson???? You use time travel to populate your team with a bunch of OCs and a vampire??? I’M SORRY HES SO FUNNY!! 5. Sure, Donna may have tried to murder all the titans (Wasn’t cool that she suffocated Karen in her hospital bed), but she’s immortal and she was having a bad day, she deserves it. Plus she acknowledges it’s because she loved them all so much  she had to kill them so she wouldn't get too attached to her friends. She also had the arc where they retconned her as evil in Wonder Woman back before ntt was canon again we don’t talk about that. 4. Dick - Pretty successful Elseworld evil arcs, good villainy, he knows how to pull it off but one big problem. Every time he’s evil, he’s so mean to his friends! In New Order he takes over the world and creates a new world order. Stephanie and Tim get like a suburban house and chill life and what the titans just have to fight the resistance against him? And then he asks them for help??? And in the vampire universe he just takes Kory captive for her blood. Dick, c’mon. Take an example from Raven, she wanted to rule with the titans as the seven sins. Or at least Wally who lay his dead body next to Roy’s bc Titans forever <3. 3. Tara - Got a pep talk from Dick Grayson, destroyed the entire world 20/10 iconic. She just needed a bit of self esteem 2. Demon raven, icon, many arcs, most of them bangers, crashed a wedding like an icon, slowly became evil bc George forgot what her forehead looked like, ect. She can pull it all off! The only reason its not number one in the list is that’s it’s done enough that writers are bad at it sometimes. And yet! they haven’t even touched on half of the excited concepts that could have come from this. Demon Raven ruling a dimension with Trigon? Maybe backstabbing Trigon? Demon Raven still wanting to save her friends or maybe destroy them? raven grappling with what she’s done with Demon Raven? An examination of what part of Raven feeds into her demon side? GUYS COME ON 1. Vic - Showstopping, incredible! Vic losing his humanity and wanted to protect the people he cared the most to regain that humanity again .... so beautiful. Giving the titans all they wanted! Giving Garth that weird mix of girlfriends in one person and Dick Batman saying he’s proud of him and Donna her child again  it wasn’t perfect but he was trying so hard.  So what if he destroyed the moon a little bit in the process, these things are messy. Plus he did it 11 years before despicable me. What a trailblazer.

Dyin’ For a Tie-In
Hey there, digitised voices. Well, our stack is finally out of MLP content. But we don't have to return to the New 52 garbage heap just yet! No, we have some more recent garbage heaps to comb through. And yes, that means we're diving back into Red Hood~
Here's the cover:
Tumblr media
Oh boy, it's a tie-in to an event I haven't followed! I care so much about what this issue's about. It is nice to come back to the series and see Jason lying in a bloody heap, though. Things that don't give me hope are Joker's new girlfriend, Punchline. In case you haven't heard, the Joker got a new girlfriend, so they can for reals separate Harley from his whole deal. Because they couldn't just have him not have a girlfriend, I guess. This may be the only thing I've read with her in it, but I really could not give less of a shit about her character~
So if you remember where last issue left off, it doesn't matter! We're instead using this as an excuse to tell "an untold tale of Red Hood"! Oh yeah, this issue isn't even pretending to have the tie-in make sense in continuity. Anyway, Jason Todd pulls into town, which is currently going apeshit with Joker activity. He guns down a few goons menacing some bystanders (monologuing that he's keeping to Batman's rules and only using rubber bullets) and drives off again. Some more hidden goons tail him, and report in to Mister J himself that they've spotted Red Hood. Joker's dismissive of them (understandably), and sends in Punchline instead.
Jason arrives at Ma Gunn's place and kicks it open. He then has a flashback of himself as a kid, hanging out with Bruce Wayne before he knew Bruce's secret. It's a little too on the nose, with teen Jason wearing a "Batman Sux" T-shirt. I have no idea what the significance of this flashback is, other than revealing Bruce Wayne is good at making sandwiches. Even Jason is impressed with his sandwichmanship. While Jason reminisces, the Joker goons move in. Jason sets a self-destruct on the building, because of course it has that, reasoning that Batman can't blame him if a bunch of unconscious goons die in an explosion. Dude, Batman can blame anyone for anything, you'd think you of all people would know that by now~
Naturally, a fight scene ensues where Jason then proceeds to render all the goons unconscious, just as predicted. He then suddenly stops and is horrified by a sound effect. He's heard it before, and races upstairs to see. It's just as he feared: the extremely distinct and memorable sound effect of a person being beaten to death with a crowbar. The person wielding the crowbar? Punchline, of course. The real shocker here? The one receiving the beating. It's our old friend Joker's Daughter. And before Jason can reach Duela, he's sidelined by the other guy from the cover: a brainwashed Dick Grayson.
I say brainwashed, but it's more like he's possessed? I have no idea what the deal is here, but it's Dick Grayson's body with the Joker at the controls. It's even his voice coming out of him, taunting Jason. Another fighting sequence ensues, with a lot of back and forth between Jason and the Joker. Duela regains consciousness and thanks Jason, and he promises to get her out of there. Punchline nips in with a kick, so she can be all "Nuh-uh, remember that self destruct you set?" And she kicks Jason out of the upper story he was on just as the building erupts in flame.
As soon as he regains consciousness, Jason rushes back in, and we get a re-creation of that scene in A Death in the Family where Batman finds Jason's body. Except it's Jason cradling Duela's body this time. He hears Batgirl calling for help over his communicator, and decides that even if he let Duela down, he can't let them down too, and rushes off to probably another tie-in. And the comic ends with Punchline and Grayson speeding off in an ambulance, revealing they did a bodyswap. The girl who died in the explosion? Just some homeless person. And the real Joker's Daughter is in their custody, alive and... well, alive anyway.
As usual, I don’t really have much reaction or interest to a tie-in to an event I haven’t followed. This story is... mostly uninteresting, honestly. There’s some fight scenes, Jason is kind of a dickhead, there’s a flashback with no thematic point, and they ape a bunch of stuff from a much better story to try and give emotional weight to Joker’s Daughter, a character nobody has every cared about.
Next week: something actually plot relevant~

For the fic ask meme, 4, 16, 24, or 28
I will answer 16 now, because No Reason, Just Whimsy, but stay tuned as I’ll probably end up answering 4, 24 and 28 at some point anyway, because like. No Reason, Just Whimsy. *Shrugs*
16.  If you only could write one pairing for the rest of your life, which pairing would it be?
I can’t tell you, see, because I would simply make that one pairing endgame and everything else leading up to it like, contain all the other ships I could not bear to be without. (Hahahaha this is why I could never be a romance author, I can not abide by the rules of HEA or HFN in relationship stories to save my LIFE). So, y’know, SPOILERS.
No but also I’m completely aware that this is cheating and not the point of the question. But I can not choose though, that is the point, like, have you met me? I am the original poster child for ADHD. I’m THAT old.
So instead I will simply say that in the realm of Teen Wolf, Scanny is very very very important to me, which like, surprises no one. But also I would still fight someone who tried to take either Scira or Scallison from me, I remain obnoxiously fond of Scackson’s potential, and I’m still out here being like, the sole Scosh (Scott/Josh Diaz) shipper in all the land, I’m pretty sure, lmfao.
And I mean, also there’s Scyle, of course. I could never give up the Scyle.
As far as Marvel goes, like, I am going to be riding the high of Bobby/Christian being canon for quite some time, as anyone who has known me long knows that I have been shipping this ship since Christian was first introduced and then written offstage like two issues later….seventeen years ago.
(I have a lot of issues with straight writers making gay characters’ gay-specific tragedies and traumas like….someone ELSE’S angsty back story, while they themselves are just shuffled off the page and considered irrelevant. For those who don’t know, Christian is Emma Frost’s gay older brother who she adored and when their father had Christian institutionalized against his will because he was gay, this was what made Emma break away from the rest of her family for good and set her on the road to becoming the White Queen of the Hellfire Club.
And then, despite like, this being life-defining for her, not a single writer in the next fifteen damn years ever thought to ask themselves…..hmmm, why would Emma Frost, one of the most powerful telepaths in the world and someone whose personal morality in no way makes her above using those powers, her wealth or Hellfire resources however she damn well pleases in the name of protecting herself, those she cares about, and advancing her agendas…..why would this woman who has never let anything stand in the way of what she cares about before like….simply just…never once in all the years since she was a teenager think to herself….hmm, what if I simply go to the institution where my beloved brother is kept against his will, and just…..made them release him?)
So, aside from always thinking Bobby/Christian would be a great ship with amazing potential given Bobby’s unique history and dynamic with Christian’s sister and the fact that Christian shares a lot of the same traits, backstory and other elements that make Emma an amazing and multi-faceted character and he’s just been sitting there in Limbo for fifteen years with all this untapped potential just waiting to be mined….
I’m always going to be gleeful about this ship and with a special fondness for Sina Grace for bringing Christian back from comic book Limbo and laying the foundation for this ship, like, just because like……I feel its long overdue and the only way to ACTUALLY make anything decent out of the bullshit that was mining his oppression for the sake of another character’s angst: by finally giving HIM the chance to be a character who is affected by all that, developed and moved forward from all of that, is the FOCUS of all that…..and even more importantly, now after being left offscreen for fifteen years by writers who considered his narrative nothing more than tragic filler….he finally has a chance to be an example of a gay character who gets to come BACK from all of that and move FORWARD from it, and like…find healing and happiness with another character, like Bobby.
So Bobby/Christian is actually hugely important to me for a variety of reasons, especially right now since this is all just happening recently, and I will love them forever and in defiance of the inevitable bullshit some future writer pulls that will piss me the hell off. Y’know, just going off of Vegas odds or whatever.
Aside from Bobby/Christian I’ve also always had a weakness for Bobby/Johnny Storm because they are the most iconic ice and fire characters out there and I am basically twelve. I also have blogged at length in the past about all the reasons I’m a huge fan of Bobby/Bishop and not just because their ship name would make them a literal bop. Again, I refer you to the thing where I’m basically twelve. But yeah, there’s a whole history there where when Bishop first came back into the past and met the X-Men who’d all been legends in his time, he kinda fanboyed a little over Bobby because of Bobby’s future legend, and then was kinda like….oh, that’s it? about him once he got to know Bobby and Bishop became like, the physical embodiment of underwhelmed.
And ever since then Bobby’s always low key been like, a hyper-active puppy around Bishop, like, trying not to SEEM like he cares an awful lot about whether or not he’s managed to impress Bishop but because he can’t be subtle to save his life, mostly just coming across as “am I living up to the hype now? how about now? am I legendary NOW? What about now?” and I dunno. Its just kinda cute and a fairly unique dynamic, and Bishop has this deliberately bland, blink and you miss it sense of humor with the right writers and that I’ve always thought has a ton of potential for him to be privately amused by this tendency of Bobby’s, enough that he’s unwilling to confess to him that Bobby actually earned his respect years ago by this point, and he just doesn’t want to let Bobby know because then he’d stop.
And then in terms of DC, I’ve posted a lot a lot a loooooooooot about my love for Dick/Kory in canon, and how they - and by extension we - were robbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbed, and if DC doesn’t give me my canon Mar’i and Jake Grayson one of these days, I don’t care if they have to import them from another universe and then have this universe’s Dick and Kory awkwardly try to co-parent them while living their own lives separately before finally coming back together and falling in love all over again and then becoming a single united family unit forever and ever in the most ridiculously complicated comic book version of the Parent Trap ever, like…..
I can’t even think of an over-exaggerated threat creative enough to convey just how badly I want and need this, DC, give it to meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee plzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
And then also, I’ve actually posted a lot a lot a loooooooooooot (though not in a few years, probably, so those posts are all super old, lol) about how I think Kyle and Donna are a criminally under-rated canon couple and were actually really really good together because they went through so much together and Kyle literally grew so much as a character specifically on the things Donna called him out for the first time they dated, like, literally so he could be BETTER, and then with how anticlimactically they ended...because the thing is, they never actually even broke up! It was this thing where like, when Donna went to LA with Kyle for his high school reunion and to literally MEET HIS MOM, like HELLO, that is not a basic relationship step, that is Advanced Dating, like…..that is where they were at in their relationship when Donna literally got the call then and there that her ex-husband and her son had just died in a car accident.
And Donna was devastated of course, and Kyle was devastated too - for her, and also in his own way, because he’d adored Robert and like, there were these issues where they were super cute and took him to the zoo together and Kyle was bonding with him and just like, melting over this kid, and Robert and Terry were killed by a drunk driver, and like, there was a later story where Kyle just went apeshit on this drunk driver he encountered because he had all these repressed feelings about Robert’s death and how it had hurt Donna and he’d made sure not to show any of that to her or even let on that he hurt for Robert’s loss in his own way, because he didn’t want to make it about him, he KNEW better…
And anyway, the point is…they never actually broke up in the sense of either of them at any point being all, oh we no longer love each other or think this can work, we need to end it. Instead, Donna said that she needed to take some time away from Kyle and everyone else and just…come to terms with what she’d lost and figure out who she even was now in the wake of that….and Kyle totally understood, didn’t argue or try and change her mind, he just said take as much time as you need, I’ll be here when you’re ready, and oh btw, here’s this lantern construct of a locket that I want you to keep because as long as it exists you’ll know that a part of me is still thinking about you and wanting you to be happy, wherever that is.
And then like…..less than a year later, DC did their super weird Dark Angel story where Donna was erased from reality and then had to be ‘recreated’ from Wally’s memories, and for awhile just existed in the form and identity she’d been recreated from, which was based entirely on what Wally knew of her and thought and felt about her, and so there were huge gaps in her identity where she was missing stuff she should have known but didn’t now because WALLY didn’t know about it.
Such as how when Donna met Kyle’s subsequent sorta-girlfriend Jade some time later - I say sorta because she and Kyle were still figuring things out at that stage, and Jenny-Lynn in part didn’t know if she wanted to actually get into a relationship with him because she thought he was still in love with Donna - well anyway, when Donna and Jenny-Lynn met in a later issue and she said all this to Donna, Donna reassured her not to worry about it, she was reading more into it than actually existed because she and Kyle had never been that serious anyway.
Which. SCREECH! Brakes please. HOLD UP.
Like, I’m sorry JAY FAERBER YES I REMEMBER IT WAS YOU WHO WROTE THAT ISSUE UGGGGGH, but like, in what UNIVERSE is “dated, broke up, then got back together later because she thought Kyle had matured a ton since they first tried dating and now they were so much stronger as a couple that she oh I dunno, introduced him to her son and they went on playdates together, went with him to meet his mom, had a never-vanishing lantern locket construct that signified just how much he would always love her” uh…..’never been that serious anyway’? I’m. What? Does not compute.
BUT WHATEVER.
LOL. Anyway, point is, so things like that actually make sense when you factor in the role Wally’s memories and perspective played in who Donna literally WAS for awhile (and the understandable existential crises she went through as a result). But like, at the point in time when Kyle and Donna were most serious, Kyle was still fairly removed from a lot of the rest of the DC universe, he wasn’t a core member of the JLA yet and usually operated independently, and he and Wally were NOT close at all yet, let alone friends….in fact, for as long as Donna and Kyle dated, Wally pretty much still actively hated and resented Kyle for just existing, since he’d always been close with Hal since he was a kid and Hal was his Uncle Barry’s BFF-and-homosexual-life-partner-in-all-but-name.
Like, it was only after Kyle became one of the core JLA alongside Wally that the two of them finally worked out their mutual antagonism and became friends, but before that, Wally was NOT shy about expressing he hated this new GL guy and wanted nothing to do with him, even though it was for unfair reasons, sooooo……like, its not really that shocking that even though Wally and Donna are two of each other’s oldest friends and super tight, like, he was never going to be the friend she called up to let him know how great things were going with her and Kyle these days, lol, y’know?
So it makes sense that when Donna was first magically reconstituted thanks to Wally’s memories/view of her (btw, this was because Wally was out of phase with reality and was in the Speed Force at the precise moment that Donna was erased from reality by the Dark Angel’s magic, and that’s why he alone remembered her and was the template for undoing what the Dark Angel had done). But anyway, it makes sense that she would for a time have had very little memory or even knowledge of her and Kyle’s prior relationship, and basically just know/remember what little Wally actually knew of it. So from her perspective then, it could very well have seemed that they were never that serious, and everyone but Kyle like….kinda just nodded and figured okay, you would know after all, and just…..everyone ended up walking away with the idea that they were just this brief fling and neither had ever had strong feelings for each other, let alone love.
The problem I’ve always had is that eventually Donna DID regain her full memories and her own sense of self, and like….she was Donna again, through and through, existing as she always had without being limited to just Wally’s view or memory of her.
Soooo, at THAT point, she should have been perfectly aware of what her and Kyle’s relationship had ACTUALLY looked like, in its entirety, and I mean, I can understand them not getting back together at that point. It’d been years, they both were in very different places, Kyle had eventually gotten together with Jade after it was expressed by Donna herself that there was no reason not to, given that its not like they were ever that serious….so by the time Donna herself would have realized otherwise, I can totally understand her feeling that the moment had passed for them, that Kyle had moved on (just as Kyle had only ‘moved on’ once he felt there was no longer a chance of them returning to what they were). Like, all of that is super weird and complicated even by ridiculous comic book soap opera standards, so I mean….lol, how do you even BEGIN that conversation, y’know?
Buuuuuut, it just kinda sucks that at no point after that Faerber issue has any later writer ever had either Donna or Kyle discuss their previous relationship(s) in terms of what it ACTUALLY was, for BOTH of them, rather than just this trivial, ancient history fling that neither had ever been super invested in….even though for several years in the nineties they were one of THE major hero couples in comic books.
So. Yeah. As evidenced, I have a lot of unresolved Donna and Kyle feelings lol.
And then of course, there are and always will be my epic “OMG DICK AND KYLE COULD BE THE GREATEST SHIP AND END ALL THE SHIPS LIKE COULD YOU EVEN IMAGINE” feelings, but like. That’s a thirty pound tome in and of itself, so. Like. Just picture the two of them standing staring soulfully into each other’s eyes and then me, creepily fixated on them twenty feet away, chin propped up on my hands and going awwwwwwww while my own eyes like, sparkle anime style but also are the heart-eyes motherfucker meme at the same time.

Dick and Jason's fanon relationship for the ask game
Someone wants to see me go apeshit and honestly I have no problem with that lmao.
There’s a lot to say about Jason’s and Dick’s relationship in general, and even more about their fanon relationship (vs their canon one or on its own). If you follow me you probably already know that Dick’s and Jason’s relationship is one I hold close to my heart.
(rest under the cut, careful, it's long! also cw for canon dad bruce i guess, and various mentions to Jason's death.)
For some reasons, fanon likes to imagine that Dick was an awful brother to Jason when he was Robin, even if there’s nothing on page in the comics to support this. (There’s actually more about them being close/trying to get to know each other and spend time together than anything else, really.) I guess it’s to add to Jason's angst, like, I legit never saw any Dick fans use this trope. And like, it’s valid of them I guess, it’s just really frustrating for me who loves Dick and loves Dick’s and Jason’s relationship -- because their whole thing is that they're a found family, and specifically a chosen family. They keep choosing each other (and that’s why, in part, I love them) and accepting each other as family, when they were younger and when they’re both adults as well. It’s just… In canon they have such a huge influence on each other -- like, baby Jason wanted to be just like Dick and took example on him, Dick after Jason’s death decided to not allow any minor on the Teen Titans again, etc… I’ll even say that Dick tried to be better for Jason, both when he was alive and after he died.
Fanon tends to gloss over all of this to go immediately to “Dick was an asshole, he was never here for Jason, everyone hated Jason because he wasn’t Dick/because Dick was mad at him”, and the likes. And it’s frustrating because their relationship is way more complex and way more positive than this. And even when they’re shown in a more positive light, we always end up with something like “Dick was super mad at Jason but then he warmed up to him, Jason used to be scared of Dick’s and Bruce’s yelling matches, they had a really rough start but it went better in the end but it was never enough, Jason is super-jealous of Tim because Tim got big brother Dick, Dick tried to do better with Tim because he wasn’t here enough for Jason”... And again, most of those are very frustrating if not downright a disservice to most of the characters.
So, let’s be clear here: Jason and Dick never had a rough relationship, in the sense that they did have some wrong ideas about the other, but it was all before meeting the other. And all of this is a reboot -- in precrisis, they knew each other before (or at least Dick knew Jason’s parents), and Dick wanted to adopt Jason himself (he was just eighteen lmao, and Jason was like twelve or thirteen I think?). And postcrisis, what do we have? Jason being rightfully upset because criminals and more importantly, Bruce, keeps putting him against Dick’s example even when he doesn’t know him. Dick being rightfully upset because his father figure, who fired him under the pretense that Dick was too young and shouldn’t be a vigilante, who never tried to apologize even when Dick went away, who took one of the last link Dick had of his biological family, this man turned around to take in a new kid out of the blue, gave him the Robin name and title (who are, again, one of Dick’s last links with his family), and literally adopt him (which he never did nor talked about with Dick himself, who always wondered what he was for Bruce). All in the biggest hypocrite moment ever, but that’s another story for another time.
And what happens when these two rightfully angry kids meet for the first time? Well, Jason tries to prove himself to Dick. Dick chooses not to take his anger on the kid and actually protect him. They team up. Dick ends up giving his Robin costume to Jason, with his blessings and his number so Jason can contact him if he needs or wants it. Dick reaches out to Jason after like, one hour at most of meeting him, and you know what? Jason accepts it, takes it gladly, and is happy about it. Because he received way more than he expected -- Dick’s support, and someone in his corner. And after that, for the little time we see them together (which isn’t by the characters’ choice exactly, but because they were both in different books and they didn’t have time to exploit their relationship on page -- like, the Teen Titans comics at this time were. A lot. A lot was happening oduhgui. Plus, Dick was considered a Teen Titans character back then, not a Bat affiliated one like he is today.), they were getting along well, and even seemed to share some inside jokes (it’s not exactly the term I’m looking for, but ways to deal with a parent/your parents in particular, or something you share and joke about because you have this same experience like siblings). They were not the closest, but still close enough to realize they had spent time together. That, plus the famous ski trip they went on together! (I want an issue with just this ski trip… srly we’ve been robbed).
So, the idea that Jason and Dick didn’t like each other, that Dick was an asshole to Jason, or that it took Dick time to warm up to Jason? Nope. Like, it’s far from canon, and honestly it can get me out of a fic so fast. Most of the time if not all the time, it’s played for Jason’s angst, and the fic doesn’t care if it’s deeply OOC for Dick (let’s be honest, it’s the case for any of Tim’s, Jason’s, or Damian’s angst -- Dick is often just used as a prop for it, no matter how or if the role doesn’t fit his character. I’m not judging, everyone enjoys whatever they enjoy, it’s just frustrating as someone who loves Dick and wants to read him to mostly find him written like that). Now, since Dick wasn’t mad at Jason (but at Bruce, the real culprit in the story tbh), you can also get that no one in the heroes community was mean and/or mad at Jason either. He was actually well-liked, especially by the Titans, and he showed a lot of maturity when teaming-up with them. Baby Jason was a sweetheart and you can fucking fight me on this. To continue on this -- there weren’t any shouting matches between Bruce and Dick to scare Jason away, since Dick and Bruce just,,,, you know, didn’t talk to each other, actually. Dick was angry and hurt about Bruce’s action, and Bruce just decided not to address it and to continue as if everything was normal. (Like, honestly, Jason and Dick, the actual children, were more mature than Bruce odiufh.)
NOW just a little point about the Tim-Dick-Jason situation before I go more in depth on the Dick and Jason after Jason’s come-back to life. Tim’s and Jason’s relationship is a complex one and not for this post (maybe for another one later), and I used to love Dick’s and Tim’s relationship before Tim stans destroyed it for me? However, I still love them even if I can’t focus on them anymore, and what I can say is that the idea that Dick was so nice to Tim only because Jason died is like… A huge disservice to both of them, to their relationship, and also deeply untrue. Sure, Jason’s death impacted Dick and the way he interacted with Tim; but not to the extent of that being the only reason why Dick was around then. I think it’s important to note that Dick was in therapy for some amount of time after Jason’s death (I can’t find if he started it before or after, but it doesn’t change that he was in therapy and talked about Jason and his relationship with Bruce), and I do think it influenced his presence around Tim. Mostly also because then Dick was aware that Bruce was in no shape to care for a kid or be careful around Tim, so Dick took upon himself to train Tim himself. AND some time after Tim started as Robin is also when Dick first established himself in Blüdhaven. I’m not sure both events are at the same time, but they’re close enough.
It’s important to realize that when Jason was Robin, Dick had no reason to be around him; Bruce had fired him and never acknowledged their father-son relationship, leaving him to fend for himself without knowing what his place at the Manor was, Dick has the Teen Titans that he was leading, a girlfriend with Kory, he was a young adult trying to live his life with no tie to anyone else. And still, Dick reached out to Jason to have a relationship with him.
Now, with Tim, Dick’s situation was very different -- his and Kory’s relationship ended toward the same time, Dick went to Blüdhaven so was closer to Gotham, he wasn’t with the Teen Titans all time again. That’s basically when Dick shifted again from a Teen Titans character to a Bat-affiliated character, and it shows in his relationships -- he’s allowed to be closer to Tim than what they would show with Jason, but his relationships with every other characters who aren’t Bat-affiliated kind of,,,, faded in the second or even third place. Seeing Tim’s and Dick’s relationship develop on pages was easier. Dick wasn’t close to Tim or an amazing big brother to Tim because he was feeling guilty about Jason, but, as weird as it is, because he was allowed to by DC.
NOW -- for the other part of this, aka their relationship after Jason comes back!
Again, I won’t pronounce myself on the whole Tim-Jason thing because it’s complicated and deserves its own post lmao. BUT I do have things to say about what fanon makes of Jason and Dick then!
And honestly, I can’t keep going with this part without saying that like,,,, Fanon doesn’t get Dick’s character. It just. Doesn’t understand him. It would deserve its own post as well, but there’s one thing in particular about it that poses problems when talking about Jason’s and Dick’s relationship: Dick doesn’t always share Bruce’s morals and beliefs.
More, even, and it’s honestly a pet peeve of mine -- Dick is not Bruce’s Golden Boy. And Jason more than anyone else knows this, because he was there when they were not talking to each other and were basically,,,, not present in each other’s life. I personally hate Jason referring to Dick as “the Golden Boy” or anything like this, because, if anything,,,, Jason is Bruce’s Golden Boy, honestly. He’s -- or, he was after his death -- this standard, this perfect kid no one will be able to compete against, not even Jason himself.
So. Yeah. I really dislike fanon insisting on this one, especially since the only instance of Jason calling Dick like that is from Truth and Justice, from 2021 aka this year. We all know where it comes from lmao.
To go with that -- fanon often if not always has this idea that Dick has to make amend for not being here enough for Jason/for being an asshole to Jason, and how Jason is so nice for forgiving him, or how he’s angry that Tim got Dick as his big brother when Dick hated him, etc. I ranted about all of this just before, so you can get that my feelings on this are far from positives lmao. It’s wrong on so many levels.
I would also add that from what I read of Dick, he is way more flexible about the whole killing thing that Bruce will ever be. Like, outside of the fact that he himself killed the Joker (sadly not permanently, a F in the chat for Huntress who was tasked by Batman to revive the clown), he isn’t as judgemental on it, if not at all. If there’s someone who would just be happy to have Jason back without throwing a fuss about all the killing, it’s probably Dick lmao. As shown after the whole shitshow with the Joker -- Dick is more scared and apprehensive of Bruce’s reactions to him killing that about the fact that he himself killed someone. (I would go as far as to say that he didn’t have any regret in killing the Joker but oh well.)
So, yeah. Fanon does like the take that Dick would side with Bruce and act like his perfect second-in-command, never doubting his decisions, never calling him out on anything, and hating Jason/not trusting him/thinking he’s crazy because of all the killing thing or whatever else. And, like, it doesn’t fit Dick at all? Nightwing isn’t one if not the best leader of the DCU because he keeps on following Batman without asking any questions. Hell, they had a fallout in the first place when Dick was still Robin because Dick was questioning him and his decisions! And it never changed! Dick uses to,,, not let it slide but be more forgiving with Bruce after Jason’s death because he wanted to be here for the new kid(s) and keep on supporting Bruce,,, but it doesn’t mean he always agrees with him or don’t tell him when Bruce acts full of shit, actually. So. Yeah. Dick would be more welcoming of Jason in general -- not happy with the killing and probably that they would talk around it (since, honestly, a lot of Jason’s acting out come from his issues and traumas), but he would still welcome in and help him in general. And. You know. Be there for him. Like he always was.
And, because it’s one of the things that makes me emotional over anything -- Jason trusts Dick. He still sees him as his family, no matter what. If there was someone Jason was not angry at after everything, it was Dick. Like, the Brother in Blood storyline (if I remember the name correctly, the one set after Blüdhaven’s destruction, when Dick is back to living in New York and Jason goes around in a Nightwing costume to kill people and basically fuck up with his big brother lmao)(also the one with Tentatodd LMAO), is literally Jason,,, maybe testing isn’t the right word, but it kind of is at the same time, but just making sure that Dick is still his family -- because it was clear for him but he wanted to make sure it was the same for Dick. And like, listen, it makes me emotional. This boy is angry at the whole world and with good reason but he can’t find it in him to be angry at his big brother I’M EMOTIONAL OKAY.
TDLR; in general, fanon like to put them against each other -- the fact is, in canon, they’ve always chosen each other as family, and always called each other brother even while, you know, not always agreeing on everything, or being angry against the other, or just being a normal sibling. Dick has always come running when Jason called him, and Jason has always gone to Dick when he needed someone in his corner, someone he trusts, before and after his death alike.
And I just like… Have so many beefs with how fanon treats them, because more often than not it’s just to add unnecessary Jason’s angst, and it always takes a toll on Dick’s character. And as someone who prefers when people are fighting together instead of against each other, you can get what I prefer for these two difuhv.
Plus. It’s just the love between them, the real found family, the fact they chose each other and never went back on it, and. It’s just. I love them. Their canon relationship is so good, and fanon usually do them dirty.
So. Rip fanon Dick’s and Jason’s relationship, but you’re not for me.

Back on my "the Batkids play Trauma Bingo" bullshit, but Duke manages to win every time. How? He cheats.
The card: Near-death experience by falling of a big height.
Duke: Nice, I got this one.
Dick: Wait, seriously? When?
Duke, the only one who does his patrol in broad daylight and also never writes a correct patrol report: Yup. Two days ago.
Everyone else, knowing they can't verify the information: ಠ_ಠ
.
The card: Loss of one or more organs.
Tim: FINALLY this one is for me.
Duke: Nice, I got a bingo!
Steph: Wait, you lost an organ???
Duke: Not yet.
Damian: Not yet? What do you mean by "not yet"?
Duke: Well, I can see in the future. And I'm going to lost an organ in the future.
Jason: How can we know it's true? You could totally bullshit us right now.
Duke: Well, how can you prove it's not true?
Everyone: ...
Duke: I mean, I could tell you you'll become bald, but we'll need to wait thirty years to confirm it, so... I win.

Loving Dick & Jason is about how they constantly choose each other as family and brothers, no matter when, no matter the continuity, no matter what their lives are at the moment—
It's about how Jason only asked for Bruce not to put any other kid in danger, not to get a new Robin, to kill the Joker for him, and how Dick did all of those (by refusing any more kids in the Teen Titans immediately after learning Jason's death, by refusing for Tim to be Robin until he had no choice anymore but to accept him like he accepted Jason, by killing the Joker)—
It's about how Jason reached out to Dick after coming back bc he wanted to be sure they were still family, and how Dick always comes running for him every time Jason asks him to—
It's about how they're not shy to call each other brother and family and how they reach out to each other and support each other at times and how Jason was never angry at Dick and how Dick kept doing his best with Jason even when he had no obligation to—
I just have so much feelings right now. They're just,,,, they love each other so much.

Character design ideas for Dick Grayson, just for fun
(some of these may be canon I'm just picking from stuff I've seen in comics and my imagination sometimes I forget which is which)
-birdlike head-tilt. All the time. He's thinking deeply about something/ appraising you/considering what you're saying/being off-putting on purpose/etc.
-forward spinal arch a la Simone Biles
-mole under the eye
-one chipped molar from early Robin days
-smooth skin. In my head that mf has the smoothest nicest thing and his routine is just. Bar soap. I'm extremely jealous.
-glow in the dark tattoo (for Donna's death?) in his lower back
-in one of the pockets of the Nightwing suit is a pouch full of human teeth. He refuses to elaborate as to why or how they got here. One time in an undercover poker game against some mafia don he added the teeth to the pile as a power move.
-rings. Idk why I like my civilian Dick design with a bunch of metal rings that hurt like a bitch when you get punched but also look cool (imo he has super pretty and long fingers)
-I like workaholic human disaster!Dick, so coffee stains on clothes and dark eye circles, but also, crumpled beautiful dress shirts in need of extreme ironing from after falling asleep headfirst on the couch after a gala.
-he has one piercing, something simple, maybe a nub, but wherever you guessed it is, it's not.
-dimples
-emergency secret compartiment sewn inside his thigh because that's something normal people have in case they get kidnapped or stranded in space (no it is not. What the fuck, Dick.)

AMEN TO THAT!
Tumblr media
Dick should fucking rip Caulder to shreds with his bare hands. Turn him into a puddle of blood. Go absolutely apeshit. You ever watched Black Lighting? That show showed me what ripping someone's spine out looks like and something tells me mr Dick 'I will let the world burn for my son and daughter' Grayson would draw inspiration from that.
i’ve seen a lot of fics and headcanons of Dick confronting Trigon about Rachel, which is adorable of course I love me some protective Dad Grayson!
but one of these days I will write Dick confronting Chief about Gar and calling out his horrible shit and abuse cause I need to see an extremely pissed off/protective of Gar Dick ripping into Chief. Dick hates his kids previous family members equally.
Trigon is a demon he’s supposed to be evil but Chief is just some dude who made the decision to abuse a child and treat said child like an object. It’s fucking disgusting.
