Large chunks of the TUA fandom have always been pretty puritanical in my opinion, and a lot of them also have shit taste and shit reading comprehension.

I remember people being against Vanya/Sissy because it's cheating (Sissy is a 1950s housewife with an abusive husband who may or may not be a repressed lesbian and is exploring a romance with a woman while considering whether she should abandon her husband or stick it out for her disabled child).

Lately I've been seeing loads of people randomly calling the showrunners pedophiles because they wanted to give a character in his 70s, who spent his whole life tragically alone to the point that he hallucinated a romance with an inanimate object, a romantic subplot but were waiting for the actor to turn 18 before doing so to avoid icky implications. They say that the character ought to be happy with the inanimate object.

They also fail to understand that this has always been a vibes-based show and that there's no point in nitpicking the time travel logic or whatnot.

Was season 4 bad? YES. I cannot even begin to enumerate the ways in which it was bad - subplots that go nowhere, random character assassination moments that have no point (Five hiding the journal from Lila for 5 months when nothing would have changed had he told her right away), incoherent plotting, weird pacing, etc.

But calling it similar to GOT season 8 and flinging around paedophilia accusations and just bitching and moaning to this extent just freaks me the fuck out.

Y'know what I think would be a really interesting social experiment?

To take the people out there who have watched both Helluvaboss and The Umbrella Academy, particularly Stoltiz antis, and see how many of them support Sissy's relationship with Vanya (Viktor. I'll refer to the character as 'Vanya' here and with 'she' pronouns as that is who they are at this point in the show.) Both shows feature a character who closeted through force, abused, raped, and is in an unhappy, loveless marriage who cheats on their spouse with a mysterious and enigmatic figure. Both shows feature that figure introducing the character to a life they want and things/sensations they truly enjoy, bringing them happiness and letting them be themselves for the first time in a very long time. Both shows feature a relationship with a couple who have a power imbalance. Vanya loses her memory during this time, and is Sissy's employee- she is vulnerable, impressionable, fragile, and there's a reason people tell you not to get into a relationship with your boss. MASSIVE power dynamic issues. Both shows feature a character with a child who they care deeply for and would protect above all else; including fighting their spouse for them.

Both shows feature a society who shuns and dislikes the cheating character for who and what they are, and what they want, seeing them as 'wrong'. (Sissy as a lesbian, Stolas as a gay man/ and in a relationship with an imp.) Both are pressured into behaving a certain way and adhering to certain societal pressures, and both do not want to conform but are frightened about what might happen if they fight back. The main difference is, in the Umbrella Academy, Sissy is a woman. Her abuser is a man, her husband, and there is no 'reciperatory sex' deal. Sissy is a woman being abused and raped by a man. Stolas is a man being abused and raped by his wife.

It'd just be interesting.

2. talk about the girl that made you realize you liked girls

there's a few answers for this actually! my first (and longest standing) lesbian crush was on Chloe Price from life is strange when i was in the sixth grade, and i would imagine her when i was... you know... but i never connected it to lesbianism. after that would be a grainy youtube clip of a girl named Frankie kissing another model girl in a tv show called lip service. i would watch that clip Constantly. like. every day when i got home. and i still didn't make the connection! but finally was Vanya from the umbrella academy, who i was like. woah. kiss me now. and then I cried while scrolling through google images of them dressed in suits as a woman because i was overwhelmed. and then took more than a handful of 'am i gay?' quizzes. and then it still took a few more years for me to admit it fully.

6. do you tend to like more masculine, feminine, or androgynous girls?

i definitely have always leaned more towards masculine or androgynous women. the suits, the short hair, the butch, the tattoos; the raw, hands-on knight. the sometimes rough and ragged and tough, yet soft and kind-hearted and emotional. Chloe Price, Ellie Williams, Vi Arcane, my lovely girlfriend, etc.

personality is more important to me than anything, though. that being said, the personality of masc women is typically the one i am also more drawn to. the tenderness, gentleness, compassion, devotion, reality, steadfastness. so close to the heart of humanity. divinity. god, women are beautiful. what was the question?

7. do you look/ dress more feminine, masculine, or androgynous?

it depends! i always lean more towards high feminine naturally, but it took me a while to feel comfortable in it. i never liked being told what i had to be. sometimes if im feeling stuck or trapped i turn androgynous or masculine as a kind of 'fuck you'; barking like an angry dog. look at my teeth! don't forget i have them! so basically, feminine until someone gives a shit. (i love being in my most feminine, though.)

So I haven't been able to watch the triumphant (?; I've heard mixed reviews) final season of "The Umbrella Academy" because I've been enjoying struggling with the dual-firing cannons of bad mental health and medical issues blasted directly at my face, with neither showing signs of letting up.

But I still have time to troll my favorite haunts, and tonight I read a post that very correctly encapsulated my thoughts on why Season Three was such a fuck-up. I've written about it before, but one of the things that irritated me about Season Three was the way everyone patted themselves on the back loving how the transition from Vanya to Viktor was so seamless... when instead what happened was the writerly equivalent of being shot in the face with an ugly, piece-of-trash pistol, and then everyone telling you that you should have known better, that gun's been around since Act One, under a spotlight in a glass case on a velvet pillow, no less! Of course it was going to be shot!

I didn't even do well in playwriting in college and yet I know you don't fire off a gun you haven't established existing. So when "Viktor" says things like "I've never liked looking mirrors" it's like "Girl, when?" Not to mention the incredibly insensitive way "Viktor" says that being in a lesbian relationship was what inspired "him" to transition. Really? You were finally happy in a relationship with a woman but realized in order to be in that relationship you needed to be a man? How homophobic does this gun have to be?

Apparently I'm not alone in this. User "Right Cross" over at the New Zealand Fruit Farms was able to succinctly describe Season Three. I know many of us have mixed feelings about the New Zealand Fruit Farms, but despite their reputation they usually have correct information and occasionally thought-provoking posts.

"Everything that happened in the latter half of Umbrella Academy is a fucking tragedy."

Ellen Page transitioning after the scripts had finished causing a massive re-write and Thomas Page McBee, another trans man, was brought on "ensure that the storyline where Viktor comes out as trans was handled with care and respect." So much was done to make sure that Ellen was respected that anything resembling what Umbrella Academy was ceased to exist. Here's a short example: The family, who is always at each other's throats and are vicious with their insults and actions with one another find out that their sister Vanya, (who they all have a significant distaste for even before she ended the world twice), is now going by Viktor. The family is in a heated discussion when suddenly Vanya mentions she is now Viktor. You would expect that any one of these insensitive siblings would comment negatively on this behavior. Even if they are all secretly identity politics progressives, surely any one of these people would find some mean thing to say. It doesn't need to be transphobic. It could be anything. Anything to show that the characters and the writing are still intact, any type of snide remark that could show that the writers haven't completely assassinated all of their characters. Not one thing. Not only do they all accept her, they praise her. From this point on in the entire series, Viktor the character receives no meaningful pushback or character interaction, despite the amount of screen time he is given. Viktor is never on the back foot. Not in combat or dialogue. Viktor is no longer treated as a character, only as a tool. He becomes completely static. Viktor is always the last one standing, literally, in the final confrontation in Season 3, where he is the only one who has the power to do anything about the situation they're in. Every single scene with Victor is pandering garbage. He even gets asked to be the 'best man' of one of the brother's wedding. Everything about Season 3 is so creatively bankrupt that it is insulting. Viktor is the best man? Not Five? Not Klaus? Most egregious, not Diego? Someone who Luthor has had a rivalry with since the beginning of the series, but we have been able to see them grow to be true brothers and friends? Season 3 is a narcissistic love letter. Attempting to write scripture showcasing that she could live the life of a man with infallible masculinity. Wishing that those who she cares about would accept and praise her choice to transition. That she would be asked to receive one of the highest honors another man can get, being the best man at a wedding from someone who truly cares about you. From being someone who is powerless in their own body and hates themselves to someone who is confident, strong, and always in control. Not only against enemies, but friends and family as well.
