a long term day dream I enjoy is one in which spones was together during the 5YM, sometimes that it became mcspirk during the movie era, but regardless that Spock forgets after he's resurrected and he gets/stays together with Kirk (and if it was post mcspirk Kirk and McCoy have an angsty argument where McCoy insists Spock needs Kirk more right now and adamantly refuses to keep up his former relationship with Kirk until either Spock remembers or they have a conversation about it because, esp with how his own marriage ended, he would never allow Spock to think he's being cheated on, or let Kirk feel like a secret lover and maybe he can't stand the thought of feeling like that himself.)

but anyway, there were all those years of being practically domestic before that, and he's gotten to know Spock's parents really well, they were already fond after Journey to Babel and he ended up staying with them for a while to recover after the fal tor pan, and they had gotten used to thinking of him as a son in law and that soothed something in McCoy's heart he wouldn't acknowledge was there

and afterwards he would find himself back for a visit to give sarek a checkup or to drop off something for Amanda's garden or fix something around the house or drop off some tupperware lmao, it was just comforting to be able to go somewhere he was welcomed into like a home, and somewhere he could allow himself the memories of what had existed with people who knew of that reality

and anyway that's how Spock finds out what they were - a video call with his mother in which he's faced with the extremely perplexing sight of the doctor setting the table in his childhood home, casually handing his mother a cup of tea while sarek pours him a glass of brandy in the background

The episode was originally meant to air on March 28, but was pushed back due to coverage of the death of Dwight D Eisenhower. In the episode, Captain Kirk's (William Shatner) ex-lover Doctor Janice Lester (Sandra Smith) not only took over control of the USS Enterprise but took over his body as well.
