Fell for Alexander last season. He's so handsome and stoic. That tough exterior soft interior. I love that.

Sanditon S3 Theory: Heybourne

After watching all of the trailers, seeing all of the photos, and reading the episode summaries, I’ve come up with this theory as to how things are going to for Charlotte and Alexander.

So Charlotte arrives in Sanditon with Ralph in tow, not aware that the Colbournes are also recently returned to Sanditon. She soon runs into Augusta and Leo at the beach, which stirs up old emotions. They go back to Heyrick Park and tell Mr. Colbourne that she’s back.

Georigina’s party comes and everyone is there. Colbourne talks to Charlotte, feeling hopeful, hoping her return is good and that maybe he can have a second chance with her, but those hopes are dashed when Charlotte’s engagement is announced at the party. 

Soon after Lady Susan and Samuel Colbourne arrive at Sanditon, the brothers are reunited and it doesn’t take long for Samuel to discover his brother’s feelings for Charlotte. He comments to Lady Susan about her being set to marry, but she points out that she’s not married yet, which Samuel then repeats to Alexander.

Alexander realizes his brother is right and decides to risk it. He meets Charlotte at the cliffs and confesses his love, but still doesn’t reveal why he pushed her away at the end of season 2, so Charlotte is just hurt and confused. “I’m going to be married. It’s too late!” she tells him. His hopes are dashed and he doesn’t push it.

They continue to be pushed together at social events, however, and Charlotte cannot entirely fight or hide her own feelings. Ralph begins to suspect an attachment between them and confronts her about it. “I’d rather be alone than live a lie” he says. Charlotte realizes it wouldn’t be fair to him to to continue on with the engagement, so she agrees to put an end to it and Ralph returns home while Charlotte decides to remain in Sanditon.

She’s embarrassed, however, and doesn’t make the end of her engagement public. It’s only when Leo sees that she’s still in town when she should have left that Charlotte is forced to admit her engagement is over. Leo tells Alexander this. It raises his hopes again, but having already been rejected, he’s hesitant to do anything. 

Meanwhile, Edward has been pursing Augusta, and it turns into a Lydia and Wickham type situation. Alexander and Charlotte realize she’s in trouble and go to her aid. They find her before anything too serious happens, but Alexander blames himself and Charlotte tries to persuade him that this wasn’t his fault. Then he finally opens up and tells her about his last conversation with Colonel Lennox and why he did what he did at the end of the previous season. 

Charlotte is, of course, shocked. But this news is what finally breaks down all of her resistance and she can finally admit to herself that she loves him. She confides in Lady Susan who encourages her to go to him and tell him how she feels. 

Charlotte realizes she’s right and decides to do it, but before she can, she hears a rumor that of a possible relationship between him and Lydia Montrose. Believing this rumors to be true and fearing she’s lost her chance, she decides to leave Sanditon. But Alexander hears of her leaving and decides to risk it all again. He finds her and they finally have an open conversation about their feelings. He proposes and she (of course) accepts.

Castles Made Of Sand

Summary: Juliet takes Leo and Augusta to the beach to enjoy the fresh air and sand. Mr. Coulbourne pays them an unexpected visit.

Leonora rushed towards the water, set on bringing fresh material to help finish their sandy rendering of Heyrick Park. "Careful," Juliet called after her.

The sand castle —or sand estate, as it so happened— was no architectural marvel, but it was sturdy enough for a model made of only sand and sea. It bore a passing resemblance to the real thing, and Leonora seemed proud of the construction, so neither Juliet nor even Augusta were about to disillusion her. Their efforts would be washed away regardless when the tide rose later that day, so for now, they merely meant to enjoy it.

"The last thing we need is you being pulled out to sea," Augusta remarked. This only caused the spirited young girl to laugh as she scooped up a great amount of sand that she quickly ran back with.

Leonora put the finishing touches on the structure while Juliet and Augusta attempted to clean their hands of the caked and drying sand that now covered their palms and fingers. Managing to get the worst of it off, Juliet wiped the remaining dirt onto the blanket the three of them sat on, not noticing Leonora's change of expression at the sight of someone approaching.

"Father," Leo called, "we made Heyrick Park!"

"Have you now," Alexander inquired, taking in the sand sculpture himself and smiling. "I think the three of you might have futures in architecture."

Juliet giggled along with Leonora, and even Augusta cracked a smile. "I’m not quite sure we’re there yet, Mr. Colbourne," Juliet replied, "but we did have fun."

Why Colbourne Fought Tom on Sanditon’s Expansion

SPOILER for Sanditon 2x03...

Here’s my theory for why Colbourne, who seems to pretty much spend all his time at his estate would have roused himself to fight Tom on Sanditon’s expansion: I think he’s protecting Leo, and to a lesser extent Augusta. 

I believe there was scandal around Leo’s birth, namely that she was born too soon to have been conceived in wedlock. My reigning theory is that she’s Lennox’s biological daughter. I think there was a lot of gossip when Leo was born and Lucy Colbourne was shunned. Following that I think Lucy killed herself, creating more scandal. 

In keeping Sanditon a small fishing village with only country gentry Colbourne is effectively creating a bubble around Leo and Augusta. In keeping out of sight and away from the gossip machine that is London society, the story is given the chance to die. If fashionable society comes to Sanditon and they see Colbourne, the story may re-enter circulation. Leo and Augusta may hear the whispers about their mother/aunt. Both of their marriage prospects will decrease.

I think its one of the reason he is so determined Leo and Augusta be perfect “ladies.” With the scandal around the family, they can’t afford to be otherwise. It also would explain why he hasn’t hasn’t sent either of them away to school. He wants society to forget about them until it is absolutely necessary. 

I predict Lady Susan will appear in Sanditon once more and shed light on the entire situation.

Sanditon 3x01: My Thoughts

Such a great start to the season! 

Ralph is a sweet guy and I already feel bad for him. Hopefully he’ll find love elsewhere.

Lady Susan! I’m so happy to see her.

I’m guess Mary’s illness from one of the trailers will come from visiting that woman and her family.

I’m like that Georgiana and Lord Monterose are just playing a part.

Leo being so hopeful was so adorable.

Doctor Fuchs and Miss Hankins...I never would have thought of that pairing, but I’m here for it.

I’m dying to know what the history between Mr. Price and Lady Denham is.

I wish Ralph hadn’t interrupted Mr. Colbourne. I want to know what he was about to say!

So that’s why Edward will end up going after Augusta. I knew there had to be something.

Sorry, Lady Monterose, but Mr. Colbourne loves one woman and it isn’t your daughter.

When you realize that Colbourne never really had a lot of love and thinks he isn't worthy of it to the point he denies himself and a girl who clearly likes him happiness because he fears she'll end up regretting it in the end🥺

While Colbourne has a brother and a mom who he may have had a good bond with, we know most of his interpersonal relationships were a disaster. Colbourne is very very traumatized and filled with self-hatred because of them. We see that in everything.

He was beaten as a kid by his governess. He had a dad who loved drinking, and whom he clearly detests from the way he tells Lady D he's "nothing like him".

He clearly grew up without a warm loving family. Kids with abusive parents grow up with very low self esteem, they often blame themselves for their parents and guardians hurting them and think they deserve poor treatment. People with childhood trauma also frequently have emotionally unsafe attachment styles, either remaining distant or getting too close too quickly and taking all the blame in relationships.

In episode 5 it is clear he feels very guilty for what he said to Lucy after she cheated and became pregnant. Practically no one reacts politely to a spouse cheating. After he got mad he still took her home and took care of her, but he still blames himself in part for her depression and suicide. He believes he made her so unhappy she first left him to go to London (not worthy of her time), then cheat on him (not man enough to take care of her needs, and then she didn't write to him to tell him the truth (not good enough to be trusted with it).

Even though depression doesn't work like that, Colbourne saw himself as the sole reason for her suicide. He believed she hated her life with him so much she rather died.

That's also why he stayed away from Leo and Augusta, because he sees himself as nothing but a burden who makes others unhappy. He only grows closer to his daughter and Augusta when Charlotte tells him his distance is doing more harm than good and clearly he doesn't want to harm a soul. He always takes Charlotte's advice because he clearly trusts her more in regards to taking care of others than himself.

He only starts absolving himself of a bit of guilt when Charlotte tells him Lucy's death wasn't his fault in episode 5 and in episode 6 when she says he's allowed to move on. But he's carried this hate and guilt for a decade, it won't just disappear.

Lennox is tormented, having just discovered that he has a child he never knew about and that he left the woman he loved behind while pregnant. Lennox has just discovered he actually had a family and he instantly had to give it up because he knew that because he's always on the move and he never married Lucy that he can't be a proper father for Leonora. Telling her the truth would make her feel like an orphan, it would make her feel bad about herself as she would be a bastard. Lennox hates himself and Colbourne. He's wounded, so he lashes out to make Colbourne hurt as much as him. So stabs him right where it hurts by once again hammering home Colbourne made his wife so unhappy she rather died.

Colbourne falls for the manipulation because he still believes it's true. He doesn't have confidence. He doesn't fight for Charlotte because he believes he has no right to fight for her. He thinks he's doing the right thing in letting her go. He thinks she'll be better off. He's being dumb but selfless.

And in season 3 he'll be confronted with the reality that he hurt Charlotte and himself more by sending her away than by keeping her. She's now on the path to a loveless marriage, the same thing he'd been stuck in and the same thing that made Lucy cheat because living without love is torture.

In season 3 Colbourne will have to let go of his trauma and get over his self-esteem issues and open himself up for new experiences, love, and the potential of being hurt again. Charlotte has locked herself off for love as she believes the hurt isn't worth it. She's been loved but she's never had a viable proposal. Nothing but a firm guarantee that she is loved and that a marriage is guaranteed will make her reconsider.

Charlotte always had to be the party asking men to be open with her, now he will have to be the one sharing stories about his life and his feelings. Now he will have to be the one to chase, and that won't be easy for someone who doesn't believe himself to be a worthy suitor. He'll have to grovel and give reassurances that her heart will be safe and protected this time, not easy for a man who feels like he failed that before. He'll have to be vulnerable, not easy for a man who keeps everyone at a distance. And he will have to do all of this while Charlotte is engaged and keeping her distance.
