Cine: Tea and Sympathy (1956)

Té y simpatía: ese es el único rol que debe desempeñar Laura Reynolds (la gran Deborah Kerr), esposa del profesor de deportes de un internado (Leif Erickson), como arrendataria de un lugar donde los alumnos se quedan por varios meses mientras dura la escolaridad. Sin embargo, la amable mujer quiebra esa regla básica con Tom Lee (John Kerr, ningún parentesco con su ilustre compañera de elenco), ya que entre ambos adquieren una relación que excede lo comercial. Lee es la presa favorita de sus compañeros de clase, ya que mantiene actitudes que no tienen demasiado que ver con lo que se espera de un hombre. Como vemos, un tema que no ha salido a la luz en las últimas décadas, sino que ya hace casi setenta años se mencionaba, aunque tímidamente, en una película del Hollywood clásico.

Su sensibilidad y amabilidad en el trato le han destinado el apodo despectivo de "Sister Boy", pero lo que más se destaca en él es su aptitud para la costura. Su supuesta homosexualidad es un factor de discriminación aún frente a su padre (Edward Andrews), por lo que el pobre muchacho emprende el deseo de lograr un acercamiento íntimo con Ellie (Norma Crane), a cargo del local Joint.

El año en el que se desarrolla la narración principal es 1946, época en la que Estados Unidos comenzaba a recuperarse de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. El director Vincente Minelli (esposo de Judy Garland y padre de Liza Minelli) se basa en la obra teatral de Robert Anderson y da una pincelada feroz sobre una sociedad que aún estaba a años luz de la conciencia sobre la dignidad de las personas homosexuales. En este sentido es esclarecedoramente de avanzada la forma en la que Laura parece ser la única que defiende a su joven acompañante de las habladurías que nunca dejarán de alzarse. A diferencia del resto de las películas, series o libros presentados en este blog, no hay aquí personajes homosexuales, pero he decidido su incusión ya que, por tal motivo, este filme es un testimonio cabal sobre el alcance de los prejuicios y cómo, aunque parezca mentira, siempre es posible encontrar una voz valiente dispuesta a enfrentarlos.
