William Castle - Strait-Jacket (1964) Finishing off the second volume of William Castle movie boxsets by Indicator we get Strait Jacket, and it's the best and most interesting film in the set. Lately, in 62-63, Castle had been branching out from horror going towards comedy, and comedy-horror, this time he comes back to horror and to a film that is a cross between Psycho and What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, and that's no bad thing. Starring Joan Crawford, this is a slasher/hagsploitation film which sees Crawford released from an asylum where she was put for 20 years after the double axe-murder of her husband and his mistress. Suddenly axe-murders start happening again and Crawford has to deal with her still unstable mental health and the readjustment to society. It's a fun film with a great central performance by Crawford and Diane Baker as her daughter. It isn't hard to figure out who the murderer is, there's enough weird behaviour going on to keep you on the back foot from the start in relation to one of the characters. Still it's a fun film, with some pretty cool murders and a final confrontation scene involving a Crawford mask which is pretty freaky looking. All in all up there with his best film, maybe not as good as The Tingler or Homicidal, but approaching those levels and with the great Joan Crawford it's a must see. Thoughts : The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Tumblr media
When you think of the prototypical thriller, it’s hard to not immediately imagine The Silence of the Lambs.  The film was successful at the box office, and it was famously only the third film in history to win the top five Academy Awards : Best Picture, Best Director (Jonathan Demme), Best Actor (Anthony Hopkins), Best Actress (Jodie Foster) and Best Adapted Screenplay.  Its impact on the culture cannot be denied, with the Hannibal Lecter character becoming a monster on the level of Dracula or Michael Myers in the grand scale of popular fandom.  For all that the film accomplished, it’s easy to overlook sometimes just how brilliant a piece of film-making it is.
Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) is an FBI agent in training, looking for an opportunity to prove herself and move up the ranks.  While training at the FBI Academy at Quantico, she is assigned to interview the infamous Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), a former psychiatrist incarcerated for his cannibalistic approach to serial killing, in hopes of catching serial killer at large Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine).  As Starling and Lecter face off, tension mounts in the search for Buffalo Bill when Catherine Martin (Brooke Smith), daughter to U.S. Senator Ruth Martin (Diane Baker), is reported missing and presumed to be the latest victim of Buffalo Bill.  With pressure on the FBI to locate the Senator’s daughter, drastic moves and decisions are made by all parties involved as the net tightens in regards to Buffalo Bill, his whereabouts and his exploits.
One thing immediately noticeable is how claustrophobic the entire film is, which helps both in keying up the tension and symbolically providing us a glimpse into the pressures surrounding Clarice Starling.  The framing of the film is purposefully boxy, confining and tight, with even casual conversations being portrayed as shot/reverse shot with open framed close-ups.  In terms of other claustrophobic measures, we find Clarice often subject to either being held back as a perpetually eternal trainee, or subject to being hit on relentlessly by the men she interacts with.  The cocoon symbolism used in the film further amplifies the idea of claustrophobia, as does Hannibal Lecter’s seemingly endless methods of confinement.  Even Clarice’s final standoff with Buffalo Bill is smartly played out in a maze-like home, lights out, through the perspective of Bill’s night vision goggles, giving us a front row seat to Clarice’s terror of being trapped in a losing situation.
Mind games and power struggles are the name of the game as well.  The Lecter character communicates strictly via mind games, be it fishing for personal information to psychoanalyze or doling out information slowly, as if coaching the listener towards making the important connections.  Despite how endearing Hannibal Lecter has become in the realm of pop culture, his manipulative nature cannot be denied.  When mind games are not being played, power struggles are thoroughly present.  Clarice constantly struggles for the respect of her superiors and peers, being compelled almost to the point of no sleep to prove herself with the opportunity she was given.  Even Buffalo Bill exerts a personal power struggle over strong resentment and emotions onto his victims, literally holding them captive to his madness until he decides to dispose of them (but only after extracting what he needs from them to feed his personal demons).
Themes of transformation also run deeply throughout The Silence of the Lambs.  Clarice goes through a change of progression as an FBI agent, while going through a personal transformation of acceptance in regards to where she came from and where she is headed.  Lecter has a more tangible change in the sense that his vast wisdom allows him to see many steps ahead as he plays the ends against the means of becoming a free man.  Buffalo Bill deals with a transformation of identity, and his transformation is a fluid, conflict-ridden one.  His past, specifically his traumatic upbringing, led him to misguided transsexual feelings that, out of frustrations born from limitations to see his transsexual nature manifested, are projected against women he feels he can victimize.  The balance of bleakness and beauty found throughout the film serve as a suitable backdrop for the transformation motif.
Jodie Foster continued her rising stardom and penchant for strong performances as Clarice Starling, managing to bring a ‘salt of the earth’ quality to the struggle of the woman beset with the struggles of male dominance and control.  Anthony Hopkins became the stuff of legend as Hannibal Lecter, bringing intelligence into the realm of fear-inducement, which makes his violent outbursts that much more jolting in comparison.  Scott Glenn plays the prototype FBI agent to a tee, with his clean cut and polished demeanor shining brighter than his proficiency in the field.  Ted Levine also put on a performance for the ages as Buffalo Bill that words cannot do justice for.  Supporting performances by Brooke Smith, Diane Baker, Kasi Lemmons, as well as cameos by Roger Corman and Chris Isaak round out the proceedings.
The film would go on to inspire a number of other films from the Hannibal continuum, as well as a television show.  None of the following projects, however, could quite capture the true feelings of terror and unease present in The Silence of the Lambs, and for that reason, it will always be regarded as a truly iconic film.

He came...He Saw...He tormented. Just looking for a friend, a lonely cable guy picks an unwilling Steve Kovaks as his next BFF after hooking up his cable and getting waay too involved with his life. So much 90s nostalgia! #JimCarrey in his prime! - the physical comedy, my glob, the physical comedy - not to mention the speech impediment he had to maintain throughout the whole movie. So many funny scenes, and holy crap young everyone (#JackBlack could've passed for Emile Hirsch's older brother, still probably could actually) The Medieval Times scene, the nightmare, the dinner/game night with Steve's family, the basketball game, the karaoke party...what an underrated gem! i need to get this one. #ssmovieof2015 #comedy #drama #thriller #netflixpurge #90s #cable #MatthewBroderick (why did i think it was with Steve Zahn for some reason?) #LeslieMann #GeorgeSegal #DianeBaker #EricRoberts #JaneaneGarofalo #AndyDick #HarryOReilly #OwenWilson #BobOdenkirk #KyleGass written by: #LouHoltzJr director: #BenStiller movie of 2015 number 32) #TheCableGuy
