No one loves you more than your grandparents. Two kids visit grandparents they've never met befoe and things don't exactly go as planned. Watching a new Shyamalan film is a crapshoot whose odds keep getting increasingly worse. His last fairly good attempt, to me, was Lady in the Water. Neither my parente nor I had any idea how we felt about it (though my mother, who usually falls asleep through movies even in theaters, Did stay awake for the entirity of this one and may have been the closest to saying she liked it, so there's that to be said for it.) I did like the "found footage" aspect, which put us in the same boat as the kids as they got to know people they'd never met before, but the children themselves were annoying (the grandson? staaahp tryina make yo rhymes happen, son, they ain't gonna happen. the granddaughter's use of film/literary jargon was cool for about 10 min. and then just sounded pretentious.) I did feel bad when she was doing her talking head segment, so sad. Most of the good/scary stuff was in the trailer and combined with the grandmother's story where a mass of red herrings; which made the inevitable Shyamalan plottwist feel that much weirder. Like he made 2 different films and tried to hook them together with that twist. seperately they were "ok", but together? Nah. Most Shyamalan films i've liked (Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, Lady in the Water) all had a tonal continuity that made them feel like one cohesive film...again this one? not so much. maybe i'm still angry at what the actual twist is, or that i actually thought the mom was joking at first when she said what she said. It may have seemed out of left field but i can see tiny clues if i look back, and had even thought it would've gone in that direction. Is America a nation of gunnuts? Or just nuts? Moore's look at how trigger happy America is. Gun Control is always a tricky issue - sure, have something to protect yourself and your home, but do you really need say, a semi automatic assault rifle? Overkill much? Also whoever came up with that "more bang for your buck" campaign, should, ironically, be shot. A gun should not be the incentive you need to open a bank account. Americans, in the words of Dr. Ian Malcolm, are "so preoccupied with with whether or not they Could, that they didn't stop to think if they Should." When America can't stop to examine why this happens so much more here rather than other first world countries, there's a problem. We're actually waaay too far past that point probably, gun violence/gun control seems like a symptom rather than the cause. Yep, part 2 didn't make me any less angry. I want this whole planet to burn. So that the people doing this are gone and also so that I don't have to live on this planet knowing it's going on. Why are people so fucken stupid? I was at a friend's house recently and she was commenting about a former classmate's facebook status about, James Inhofe, the new chair of the US Environment & Public Works Committee, 's claim that he believe that only God can control the climate and weather patterns, saying it's scary that such religious bigots are running the country (the classmate's words, not mine) she agreed with the chairman, saying "God controls all that" and that we have no part in it. Took ALL of my strength not punch her in the face or ask if her if she really believes God would send say, Hurricanes or Earthquakes because there are too many gay people or abortions being performed in a particular place...I was appalled that she didn't know better than to think I'd agree with her on it.
