Ok but like, any one else ever think about the fact that one of the leading things antis use to hate on James Potter is the fact his parents loved him and wanted him to be happy?
In a series full of boys who are legit being abused by their families they're like, "oh yeah James is the worst of all the male characters! He's a totally toxic guy because his parents loved him and that is a red flag somehow!" and I'm just over here like ..rlly? That's the hot take we're going with these days?
Like when did that become the thing? Isn't it so toxic to say that the only male characters who deserve our love have to be hurt and abused or have a tragic backstory to excuse them?
I mean maybe it's because the HP series is so full of abuse stories and even the hero is an abused boy that their takeaway is that male characters like James are more suspect and less likable because they had happy childhoods and good parents.
But like, what message does that send that boys/men are only deserving of love or compassion if they suffer first somehow? Because fr that sounds like some backward sj logic to me and more like something those fangirls of serial killers like Manson would say.
FYI that's how you get toxic fucking men by romantizing bad boys with trauma and saying if they're loved they're less deserving of people's time or attention or excuses for their actions.
I think we should start calling that logic out for what it really is. Like if someone's kink is torture porn and stanning abused male characters because they like to woobify them then that's whatever, I guess. But people seriously need to stop trying to pass that off as it's some new, original thing that makes them more woke than everyone else for stanning the "bad guys" because they seem more "complicated" and "misunderstood" than the male characters who just had a good family and a nice childhood and did what every teenage boy does hanging out with friends or playing sports and being social and stuff instead of being the angry misunderstood antisocial loner who just needs a girlfriend to fix him and make his life better.
How about instead of that we renormalize boys being happy and having good childhood experiences to draw from because that's not a bad or boring thing and it definitely shouldn't be a red flag for what makes a male character more toxic.
Anyway just something that's been on my mind I wanted to rant about. Ty for coming to my Ted Talk or whatever they say here. I'm new from Reddit. Lol!
Peace out!

wheel of time two truths and a lie but they're all true, there's thirteen of them, and it's just the forsaken's villain origin stories. I mean, we have an evil philosopher who wrote shit titled "the disassembly of reason" that wasn't very mainstream so he was probably salty about that, a guy who turned evil bc of a thirst for power (ok legit) but then wasn't productive as a general bc he had so many lovers, one guy who was born a day after lews therin and held a grudge against him since then, ANOTHER guy with a grudge against lews therin bc he's taller (who was a professional athlete btw. this is like idk, lebron james holding a grudge against obama), ANOTHER man obsessed with swordfighting who was ALSO jealous of lews therin, a biologist who was mad that the ethics committee came down on him for human/animal hybrid experiments, a historian with a bad temper, a musician who was mad that another pop star's album got a better score on metacritic than his, a researcher who literally bored a hole in reality and released the dark one but above all else just wants to get back with her ex, a world famous doctor who could heal anything short of death but loved torturing people, the worst teacher you had in high school x1000 and murderous, a holier-than-thou therapist who just said fuck it and indulged in every single sin, and an evil ACCOUNTANT

Avatar the way of water
Right so, this is just gonna be me and my thoughts on the new movie. I’ll get to a few things I wanna address in this post as well because I’m indigenous( Lakota) and I feel it should be addressed. This whole thing has spoilers so if you haven’t had a chance to see it feel free to stop reading here.
The movie itself starts off so happy and endearing with the sully family, I wish I could’ve seen even more of them just being content together but this movie literally doesn’t waste time getting into action which I can appreciate but yea I wished more things could’ve been shown before the time jump.
I guess one of my biggest issues so far is that we should’ve seen more of the main cast, I hope they’ll have an extended version with more because I’m honestly just wishing there was more.
Tuk tuk - Protect at all costs
Kiri is an insanely interesting character and the depth she brings is crazy. I love her so much already, sigourney is an amazing actress for sure.
On the topic of spider, his background with quaritch was also interesting because quaritch is going to have a personal stake in it all. I’m starting to think the hate his character is getting is way over the top, he was tortured for info on the sully family and still didn’t give it up. He sabotaged the demon ship to help them when they’re fighting. He grew up around the entire sully family which is why he wears so much na’vi clothing and why Loak even suggested at the end they couldn’t leave him behind. I honestly like him as a character and I think besides being a tarzan archetype, he’s bringing something to the table for the next movies. I’m curious where him and kiri will end up together, if I’m guessing right, is it gonna be some sort of star crossed lover with kiri? Who knows but I’m interested to find out. I enjoyed spiders character dynamic with them all and the interaction between him and kiri was truly so sweet.
Tonowari and Ronal power couple that’s all.
Tsireya and Loak!!!!!! That’s it I love them. They’re fr the new gen Jake and neytiri
Loak couldn’t just stop being like a Jake mini me, his recklessness cost him way too much imo.
Neteyam my beloved I wished he could’ve had more screen time, his death hit just as hard on the second rewatch as it did the first. Sweet boy. ;_; I don’t know how but I honestly hope he’ll come back in the next movies. I wish we got to see more of his character
love dad jake and mom neytiri <3 I wish we saw more of moat tbh.
It was cool to see new creatures in this universe honestly, the tulkun are fascinating.
Honestly, it all looked so pretty. kiri scene with her looking like an angel was possibly my favorite scene in the whole movie.
Quaritch shivers were timbered with neytiri. A son for a son line was so cold I’m still not over it. I’m not really certain with how I feel about quaritch and that they’re setting him up to be the main villain across all of the movies but I guess we’ll just have to see where it goes. Could be good who knows. That dad joke of why so blue legit got a chuckle out of me tho Lmao
Overall, I’d rate it a solid 8.9/10. My biggest problems are that there can only be so much time to watch things in a movie theater setting and I wish more could’ve been expanded upon, not even just one particular thing, just everything in general. Neytiri needed more screen time, Jake needed more screen time. So far, that’s my main problem with it, most of the character development happens off screen. The plot was well enough in my mind, it’s obvious they’re setting it up for the next movies. Not much to critique because I mostly enjoyed it if I’m honest.
This last thing, it does need to be addressed, James Cameron’s comments on Lakota people specifically, and that guardian article that came out 12 years ago.
I totally get why some indigenous people decided to boycott it and that’s extremely valid. I was willing to set it aside to see a movie I’ve been waiting to see since the first one came out when I was 8 years old(im 21 now).
I can tell he takes his inspiration from everywhere, which is nice. What’s so weird to me is the fact in this article he singled (Lakota people) out and called it a dead end society which is really out of pocket and if his comments are outdated, an apology is overdue. Colonization is obviously a major theme with these avatar movies but to call real life indigenous people who still exist a dead end society is not only extremely ignorant but also just completely ignores Lakota and all indigenous peoples who fight against colonization to this literal very day. He makes fictional indigenous aliens then proceeds to insult ones who are still around?
All that being said, James Cameron does come from a position of power. I can enjoy his movies while also being able to separate the art from the artist. If some indigenous can’t move past these comments, I don’t blame them and I hope in the future instead of condescending, ignorant comments, there’s understanding, self education, and actual activism.

Read this before hating on me for liking Severus Snape.
Read the whole thing.
Droped a branch on Petunia
Acidental magic, mate. No one can be blamed for that.
Hated the marauders
The marauders were tormenting him on a daily basis. No wonder why.
Tryed to get the marauders expelled
They were tormenting him, one of them had attemped to kill him and sexually assaulted him. No wonder why, in a decent school they would be expelled if not arrested after the werewolf incident.
Came up with sectumsempra
Legit defense. Marauders used illegal harmful hexes on him. And they had attemped to kill him. It's just me, but I would carry around a knife too if someone tryed to kill me. And if he really wanted to harm, he wouldn't bother to make a counter-curse.
Hanged out with future death eaters
You mean his housemates? The people he was living with? He would be even more an outcast if he didn't. Than he would be left with no friends after the mudblood incident. Not to say that, being pro-muggle and a halfblood, he would very likely get killed on his sleep.
Called Lily a mudblood
Yes. In a traumatising and humiliating moment, while being sexually assaulted. And she had to keep herself from smiling. I would call her a bitch, at least.
Believed in blood purity
Haha nope. No, he didn't. "Don't say that word!"
Interested in dark arts
So, if I like seing blood in movies, I am a psycopath? If I like manipulation tecnics, am I a evil master manipulator? If I like war tecnics, will I start WW3? Dark arts are hella interesting. I would study them too.
Joined the DEs
Out of despair and hopelessness. He had lost his only conection to the light, he had all the reasons to resent muggles and they were the only people who valued & respected him. Besides, he was a bullied poor halfblood outcast, the perfect victim of cults. And he defected after a few years, spending the rest of his life trying to bring them down.
Told the profecy
Man was a death eater working for a mind reading madman. Want did you want him to do?
Bullied the students
Maybe he was a little mean. He was the best teacher tho. Never endanged anyone's life, until year 7 where the choice was go to the forest or get tortured. Not like Miss McGonnagal who sent them to the dark forest (and locked Neville in the corridor while there was an allegate mass murderer in the school), or like Mr. Lupin who was a danger himself & covered the said mass murederer.
Attemped to get Lupin fired and outed him
First, he didn't out him. The ministry already knew, the anti-werewolf law already existed, if he had quit without being outed, he would most likely not get a job anyway. Lupin wasn't fired, he quit. Second, no wonder why he wanted him fired! He was already in a triggering place, and then Dumbledore decided to hire the person that almost killed him! Besides, as a werewolf, Lupin was endangering the students. And he covered for Sirius, an allegate mass murderer, for the sake of an old friendship. And you guys should be thankfull that he made Lupin quit, if you don't remember, DADA was cursed. If Lupin didn't quit, probably something worse would happen.
Threw a jar at Harry
Man had lost his temper. Harry had just witnessed the most embarassing thing that happened in his life. Besides, if he wanted the jar to hit Harry, it would've. And not even Harry was mad about this, so, who are we to be?
And now... let's dive into the fanon ocean! Yay...
(Until now this was by chronological order, but with fanon that's hard so it won't be)
Was evil from the beggining
No. At the beggining, he was just a poor abused inocent kid, who was made "evil" by the bullying and lack of support system.
Was toxic
Welp, sorry to ruin your fun, but if there was anyone toxic in that friendship, it was Lily. Dismissing the bullying, not listening to him, ignoring her duties as a perfect to stop that kind of stuff, blaming him for what Mulciber did to Mary, marrying his childhood bullie (and man who harrassed her constantly!). What did Sev do? Hanged out with his housemates? Lily only brought him pain.
Wouldn't give a shit if Voldy targeted the Longbottoms
Can't fight this one. It is true. But you really don't want to play the if game with me.
Told Voldy to spare Lily, but not Harry nor James
You really act like if he told Voldy to kill Harry and James. He didn't. He simply asked Voldy to spare the person he cared about. He would be asked many questions that don't have an answer at all if he asked him to spare James, and straight up killed if he asked for Harry. And I personally wouldn't give a shit about my bullie and his son. Would you?
Would be happy if J&H were dead
This one is the stupidiest. Are you for real? Lily's death made him (further) depressed and suicidal. But dead family and alive Lily? Wouldn't be able to even look at her. Dunno about you, but I would kill myself if I got the love of my life's family killed.
Was obsessed
*annoyed grunt* We've debunked this so many times... 1. If he was obsessed, the obsession would've died with Lily. You don't give your life away for obsession. 2. He was a potions prodigy. He could easely feed Lily amortentia or take felix felicis. But he didn't. 3. He left her alone after the fallout. Just that says everything. 4. So you are not allowed to grieve? To be depressed after someone you loved died?
The classic would r@p3 Harry if he was a ginger female
Haha... I'm scared of you. Genually scared of you. First, having a p3d0phily teory about kids books says more about you than about the target of the teory. Second, what would you do if a miniature of the person you loved and helped killing appeared in front of you? He wouldn't be able to teach with her in the room. Too triggering.
Was a n@zi
Death eaters are not n@zis. They are a terrorist group/cult. But n@zis? They are kids throwing a tantum when compared to them. Never left England, would welcome "jewishes" (muggleborns) or "half jewishes" (halfbloods) if they were particulary gifted or/and shared they beliefs. Oh! And that stupid myth that Hitl3r is half jewish! Does this sound like the nazis? I don't think so.
It wasn't bullying
Yes it was. 4/1. It is bullying. Rich atractive kids against poor ugly kid. It is bullying. No suport system vs no need of suport system. It IS bullying. Sirius didn't deny it. They said James had to change. It is bullying.
James changed
He didn't. He kept hexing Severus on Lily's back. Dieing for your family doesn't mean you're good. Being on the right side doesn't mean you're good.
Did I miss anything, fellow homosnapiens? If I did, tell me so I can add.

I watched The Falcon And The Winter Soldier and I liked it more that I expected, although frankly I didn't expect much. Overall, I love the setting, the cinematography and the character development. The director and the writers did an excellent job. But it also sent me down an emotional roller-coaster and that's the thing I really need to talk about.
I know there are countless rants about TFATWS, Endgame, queerbaiting and poor MCU narratives but I've never really been hanging out in the fandom until recently so for me it's my first one and I need to get it off my chest. It's gonna be long.
It was interesting to see where the show's gonna take things but start to end there was an elephant in the room. It doesn't sit well with me the way they completely sidestepped the Steve Rogers issue. Like, "we didn't make this mess, so we're not gonna go there". And it's just wrong. You can't just avoid the subject altogether and pass it on for future writers to handle. Also, you see Bucky so sad and lonely it breaks your heart. And this inevitably made me think about Endgame and Cap's storyline. I didn't feel like writing it all down after Endgame but now all these thoughts and feelings came up again and I need to get it off my chest. If they ended it all at Endgame, and I thought they did, it would have been fine, sort of. We'd forgive some loose ends. But they didn't end it there and that makes them fully responsible for this mess. I mean, I didn't hate Cap's ending. After all, it could have been worse. Steve could get together with Sharon like in the comics and they probably considered it at some point but the reactions were so bad they backed down and dragged Peggy along. Still, the ending just felt forced, no matter how you look at it. The thing is, if I knew about it after the first movie, I'd rejoice. But at this point, after everything that went down after, it just doesn't feel right.  I love Peggy and I can't deny the dance scene made me flutter a little but now I wish this was Steve's way to keep his promise before going back. In the end, Peggy would be fine without him. She had a good life, she made a career and a family. We know that thanks to Agent Carter. And we got many cues that Steve and Peggy's relationship, as important as it was, was over. Her saying goodbye to him by destroying the serum, him carrying her casket... Yet, Endgame effectively undermined that basically erasing all of these events from existence and making Peggy just a prize for Captain America.  On the other hand, Bucky needed Steve the most. And the show made it clear how bruised and broken he was. Bucky and Steve's relationship was the closest of any relationship in the MCU. At that point it was clear Bucky was everything to him, the only one who could truly understand him. Steve lost him many times and every time he fought to bring him back, no matter how impossible it seemed. When Bucky was captured Steve went into an enemy base alone on a suicidal mission and saved him and everyone else. That's basically how he became Captain America. Then Bucky got killed in the war and it devastated him. Bucky returned as Winter Soldier and there was hardly any Bucky left in him but Steve nearly let himself be killed because he needed to save him and he trusted that James would not hurt him. When Bucky finally got to his senses, there was an ultimate war going on and in the Snap James fell to dust in front of Steve's eyes. It took 5 years to get him back. And as soon as Steve succeeded, he left him, along with the rest of his traumatized friends and the world in deep chaos, to be with Peggy in 1940's, thus throwing 12 years of his life away. It just didn't feel right. That does a disservice to both Steve and Peggy's storylines. But it's not just about Peggy or Bucky. Steve going back and living his life to return to that park as an old man has opened a rift with a host of questions. I tried to get to the bottom of it but it got me nowhere.  According to Russo, when Steve went back he created an alternate reality. He also retired as Captain America. First off, I think he just made that up after to cover up the mess. If that was the case, Cap would return to the designated spot and not be sitting on a bench like he was waiting there all along. But, like, even if it was alternate reality, it could not be that different, right? He wouldn't just live in Peggy's basement, would he? He knew about the things to come like, you know, the HYDRA thing, and being the man that he was, he couldn't just sit and do nothing. Especially when Peggy was one of the founders of the SHIELD. Captain America or not, Steve would do everything to make this world a
better place. Also, if Steve went back after he crashed that plane, that means there's another Steve still locked in ice, which Russo confirmed. Even more importantly, in Steve's timeline Bucky is still with Hydra being tortured. There's no way he could leave him there. So much for the 'quiet life'. Then there are the writers of Endgame who claim that Peggy's two children are fathered by Steve. Really? That directly contradicts the earlier version that the father is a soldier Steve saved, which is shown in Agent Carter. Seriously, guys, if you're gonna make up random bullshit at least get your stories straight first.   Fans love to make all sorts of theories to try and patch up the holes but the truth is, MCU is not just one mastermind's creation and the comics weren't either. It's bound to be a mess because it's created by dozens of writers and directors and each phase gets increasingly messier because it has to fit in with the 547 previously released movies and shows. I get that and I applaud the effort of Endgame but they really can't expect us to get involved with the characters only to see them being treated as an afterthought. And the thing is, I thought that it might be just me but after a quick survey of the fandom I realized that a lot of people feel the same way. If you look at the comment section of nearly any relevant video, you're gonna get top comments saying all these things. If Marvel listened just once maybe things would make more sense. And all these thoughts aren't necessarily what I wanted to see, but what would be right for the characters. And while I do love Stucky, I'm a reasonable shipper and I really didn't expect them to be canon gay or anything, I just wished they had at least spent some time together not fighting, just healing and catching up on their lives. Honestly, I don't always like the way people ship m/m characters in every show but this time it was really more than justified. The whole storyline going through Winter Soldier and Civil War was just massive queerbaiting. It was undeniably a love story, romantic or not. "Why do you ship male characters?" some people ask. Idk, maybe if the writers put half the effort into developing m/f relationships as they do m/m ones and not just randomly throw them together I might care about them. And MCU was terrible with romance. That traumatic kiss Steve had with Sharon Carter? In the comics, Steve did love Sharon but who cares? In MCU they met, like, twice. Mostly after Peggy's funeral. Peak romance. If they had to pick a new love interest they could go with Natasha. They cared about each other, they bonded in TWS and they were both dealing with some difficult issues. But they became just good friends, which I loved. Instead, Natasha got together with Banner? And then there's Wanda and Vision, which seemed like the most random of pairings with no buildup whatsoever. The wonderful world of heteronormativity where a witch/robot couple comes before a gay one. And the thing is, I only recently learned that there's some legit leverage to portray Bucky as gay. Bucky is based on two characters from the comics. Bucky Barnes was Steve's teen sidekick, kinda like Robin, so this origin was too weird for MCU. Instead, the writers used the origin story from a character named Arnie. It was a boy Steve grew up with, a boy who protected him from bullies, and a boy who kept inviting Steve to these double dates. A boy who was gay. Which wasn't explicitly stated but was pretty obvious. And this was in 1984. So making Bucky gay would be neither woke nor against 'canon'. It would be way overdue.  So with TFTWS it was nice to see Bucky recover and bond with Sam but to me the whole ending also felt a bit excessively positive and this time the queerbaiting felt even more intentional, almost as if the writers wanted to distract the discontent fans with a new shiny ship so they forgot all the things they were mad about. Like, of course I want Bucky to be happy but also I hate the way the show's pushing the idea that he just needs to get over losing Steve and move
on with his life already because surely all his problems come from his inability to trust people and not trying hard enough, and not from being brainwashed and tortured for 70 years and then losing the only person who loved and cherished him.

[Transcript] Season 2, Episode 2. Stereo Geeks Special: The CW’s Walker
We can't believe we're saying it, but we've enjoyed the first six episodes of The CW's Walker. What is this reboot of the 90s action show doing that's so unexpected and downright subversive? In this spoiler-free review of the first half of the opening season, the Stereo Geeks duo dive into why we're loving the show and why you should give it a try.

Listen to the episode on Anchor.
Ron: Welcome to a new Stereo Geeks Special! In this episode we’ll be reviewing the first 6 episodes of The CW’s Walker.
I’m Ron.
Mon: And I’m Mon. Please note that this is a spoiler-filled review so if you haven’t caught up with the first 6 episodes, please watch them and return to our podcast!
[Continuum by Audionautix plays]
Ron: This show is adapted from the 1993 series, Walker, Texas Ranger. It was conceived by Jared Padalecki, and Anna Fricke is the showrunner. There are numerous women writing and directing the episodes. Despite the source material, this show is surprisingly subversive with regards to masculinity, gender roles, and race.
Mon: The original Walker, Texas Ranger TV show aired in the 90s, with Chuck Norris in the lead. The show was also inspired by a Chuck Norris film from the 1980s. So, as you can imagine, it was a punch-fest. Now we can't really attest to that, because we never saw it. We only ever caught the trailers on TV.
I have to say when you and I launched this podcast, I don't think we would have imagined that we would have even watched a single episode of the Walker reboot, forget actually dedicating an entire special to it. But here we are!
Ron: Well, I think part of the reason why we're actually talking about the show is because of Jared Padalecki. As Sam Winchester on Supernatural for 15 years, Padalecki has wormed his way into a lot of hearts.
But Walker is nothing like Supernatural and Cordell Walker, Jared Padalecki’s character on the show—yeah, he is no Sam Winchester.
Mon: The first episode really had me worried. It started off with a female character being fridged, and the entire storyline was confusing. Do you remember how many times I turned to you and said ‘I'm so confused. I'm so confused.’?
You were introduced to every character, and seemingly every character dynamic as well. All of that in the first 45 minutes. It was too much, and it was too messy. But the end of the episode really made us want to come back. And I think the success of this show really lies in the fact that every episode makes us want to come back and meet these characters, find out what they're doing and how are they surviving.
So, who are the characters?
Ron: As we’ve already mentioned, we have Jared Padalecki as Cordell Walker, the titular Texas Ranger. Alongside Cordell is his partner in crime—or in law enforcement— Lindsey Morgan’s Micki Ramirez. She is the first female Texas Ranger, and the first Latina Texas Ranger in the show.
Cordell’s wife, who we meet briefly in the first episode, and she returns in flashbacks in subsequent episodes, is Emily, played by Jared Padalecki’s real life wife Genevieve Padalecki. And fun fact, Jared and Genevieve met during Supernatural.
Keeping it in the Supernatural family, we have, Mitch Pileggi, playing Bonham, Cordell’s father. As Supernatural fans will remember. Mitch Pileggi played Sam and Dean's grandfather, Samuel Campbell in Supernatural.
We also meet Cordell’s mother, his children, his brother—who's also the ADA. And we also meet Coby Bell’s, Larry James, who is Cordell and Micki's captain, and has been Cordell’s long-suffering friend. There are several other characters that we meet as well. And all this happens in the first episode, so as you can imagine, it's a bit clunky.
From episode 2 onwards, it seems like they have a bit more focus. You don't have to meet every single character; they come in from time to time when they're needed in the story. And I think, overall, that kind of helped our connection with the show.
Not having watched the original, we don't really have a bouncing off point, but we do know that there was a lot of action, not much on the drama, not much on the emotions—there wasn't much human connection. I think a lot of people were hoping that they would just get something like that with this show. But Walker isn’t like that.
From the first episode onwards, it works really hard to balance the police procedural side with the family drama and dynamics. And six episodes in, I think it’s done a pretty good job.
Mon: It's been really successful in bringing these two rather disparate angles together. And what it does very well is to structurally interweave these two parallel storylines. We go from the investigation to the family drama and then we go back again, and it's not cyclical, as much as it is interwoven. And that structurally makes the episodes very interesting to watch.
Ron: But more importantly, the way they’ve balanced these two sides of Cordell’s life is actually pivotal to how the show proceeds, because Cordell is a single father now. He doesn't do a very good job of just being a Ranger, or just being a dad, and he's at the point where he's trying to figure out how to do those together. And it's actually quite amusing when you're watching it because you're like, ‘shouldn't you be with your kids right now?’ And then other times you're like ‘don’t you have a job to do?’
Mon: I feel like it's really important for us to see both these sides, not only of Cordell, but also of Micki, because it's always great to see how the job impacts the characters’ family dynamics, and the other way around. Because if you're being pulled out of your investigation because your kid did something ridiculous, or you're abandoning some kind of family trip because there's another bad guy on the loose, there will be explosions somewhere or the other. And it just makes it more relatable.
Also, we might be seeing some new pattern in The CW shows because Superman & Lois is doing something similar, right? And so's Black Lightning. They're constantly trying to show us what it's like to be a working parent. But since this is The CW, the working parents can’t just go into some office job— their office job happens to be being a Texas Ranger, or being superhero.
Ron: And that's really the crux of the show. So maybe that's why people aren't enjoying it because it isn't just, you know, fisticuffs and guns. This show is very much about subverting toxic masculinity. Walker isn’t pure as driven snow, he's definitely layered and tortured, and he does things that are questionable. But the important thing is that Micki, and the people around him, call him out on it. I especially love that about episode 6—which is fresh in our minds because we just saw it—but it's not something you see often.
Mon: I feel like in the pilot episode they kind of leaned in towards what people would have expected of Walker, being a reboot of the original Walker, Texas Ranger show. But it doesn't pan out like that, because as you said, toxic masculinity is nowhere over here.
But there are consequences to the actions that Walker takes in the pilot episode, which we see in episode 6, and that is a nuance that you need in the 21st century. We have moved beyond just watching people beat other people up. We need to know that there are people behind those fists, and that's what we’re finding out.
Tumblr media
Ron: We started watching the show because Jared Padalecki was in it. But according to my research, Padalecki has been thinking about the show for a while.
Mon: I've been hearing about his name attached to a Walker reboot for a long time. And the only reason I think it finally got the green light is because Supernatural was announced to be coming to an end in 2020. It's been on hold for a while.
Ron: It's funny because in the initial concept apparently Padalecki was going to produce the show, and the Jensen Ackles who's going to be stepping in as Walker. [laughs]
Mon: I can see that. But you know, Ackles would have brought a kind of swagger that this version of Cordell Walker doesn't need. And I think it would have changed the dynamic a lot.
Ron: I totally agree with that, especially because Padalecki seems to have got the idea from reading a story about a policeman who walked away from his duties because he did not want to continue separating children from their parents, just because they were immigrants.
Mon: Wow.
Ron: Yeah.
Mon: That explains the undertone throughout.
Ron: Exactly.
Mon: We can't tell you too much…
Ron: …but it's what have you read that.
I'm actually very curious to see where this first season goes, because that kind of story is playing a certain part in this. We've seen it pop up quite a bit just in these first six episodes. Will they take it forward? How far will they go with that? Not sure.
Mon: It will be a bold move to really tackle immigration, immigrant problems, head on in a show like Walker. This is why we need a blank canvas. You do a reboot, you do something different. You bring it to the 21st century.
Ron: According to Padalecki’s interview with Variety, this is what we said: This is not a show about a martial artist kicking minorities in the face; this is a show about a legit Texan saying, ‘Hey, I need to hear the whole story before I make a decision.’ So this version is less about what goes through somebody’s fists and feet, and more about what goes through somebody’s head and heart.”
We've definitely seen that in the first six episodes, and following the events of the sixth episode, I think we're gonna see a lot more of that.
Mon: Exactly. They're not being completely in your face about immigrants and minority communities, how they're treated and the issues that they face, but that's definitely there.
Ron: So one of my concerns when I started watching the pilot episode was that, oh, we have a white family at the center of the story. The problem with having a completely white family is that everybody around them is also white, but this show doesn't do that.
For one, Micki, who is Cordell’s partner has a massive role; she's basically the second lead. We also have Captain James played by Coby Bell, who is a Black man, and he is trying to make a difference in his department. The Walker showrunner, Anna Fricke spoke to Variety about the characters of colour on the show: “This was always supposed to be a show that was set up to have conversations on both sides of the fence and that Walker is a character that can see things both ways — we call him the edge of the coin. We realized that unwittingly we were set up to have those conversations in the characters of Captain James, who is a Black man, and in Walker’s new partner, who is a Latinx woman.”
So, she went on to talk about the pilot episode especially, because it did get delayed in production. So they went back to the writers room, and they worked on a few things. So this is what she had to say about how the pilot was changed slightly to reflect the circumstances of 2020. “Given that we had the extra time, we tweaked the pilot slightly in that Captain James, as a newer captain who was promoted while Walker was gone on a case, is really here on a mission to bring progress into the department and to keep an eye on corruption.”
Now considering everything that we have seen in 2020 and the police violence that has been, well, it's been there in the US for a long time, but in 2020, it's just—you couldn't avoid it. So, the Black Lives Matter movement definitely had an impact on the show. I'm kind of surprised that there aren't other shows that are following the same example. 2020 threw everything out of balance, but writers rooms had the opportunity to really absorb everything that was happening around them. I like the fact that the Walker team went back and said, ‘You know what we can do something, we can show what's happening in the real world through our show’. And that's why, I guess, we’ve seeing so much of the subversion.
I think what we’ve seen till now is only a taste of what's to come, really.
Mon: Oh, I agree with you. Listening to what Anna Fricke had to say about Captain James, I want to see more of that, because right now, he's almost comic relief—which I love, I really love that about him. But you can tell that there is a serious story and a serious character simmering beneath what is seen.
And this is a really clever move by the writers room so far. They are going with the easy route—family drama and investigation, but they're slipping in these moments which are making you think, which are bringing the reality of the world into the fantasy of the show.
In the first episode, Micki highlights some of the racism that she's had to overcome to be a Texas Ranger. In episode two, Stella, Cordell’s daughter, she acknowledges her white privilege and how it lets her off the hook, but not her Latinx friend.
And throughout, we see the same thing—a person of color is accused of killing his boss. Did he really do it? This seems too easy; it's constantly happening in every episode. It's a pattern. And I feel like it is crescendoing to something major. Is it going to be a realization of just how harmful some of the Texas Rangers’ actions are in the real world? Or is it going to be something different? We don't know.
Ron: Whatever we've learned so far about the show is making me question why they've kept the name of the show, just Walker.
Mon: Ooooo. Good point.
Ron: Especially now that we know what the inspiration for the show was for Jared Padalecki. Hmmm.
Mon: Wow, that’s really making me think.
I really like how refreshing this show is. It could have just been an easy reboot; they could have just cruise controlled throughout the entire story. It could have been about guy loses his wife, he's drunk, he meets new partner, they build a romance, kids go on living their life—none of that is happening so far. There are real questions being asked here, and it's thought provoking.
It's entertaining but it's also thought provoking. And I like that; that's a good mix. I mean let's be honest, when you cast Jared Padalecki as Cordell Walker, you know you're going to get a different kind of hero. He's not just going to be broody. He's not just going to be an Action Man; there's going to be layers. And that's what we get.
He definitely comes across as somebody who is burdened by his loss. He's also a little bit arrogant, but he's coming to terms with the fact that he has made mistakes in his life; he's constantly continuing to make mistakes, and he has to address those. But he's also funny; because like, he's a real person.
He'll suddenly act out not realizing the consequences, or he'll say something because he got excited. He is so normal. And I really liked that because there are these instances of comic relief and you're like, ‘that came out of nowhere, but I really needed that’.
Ron: It's funny because we’ve kept mentioning how we watched the show because of Jared Padalecki and how, because he was Sam Winchester, it was just a natural progression. But watching Walker, I'm not getting anything of Sam Winchester. I'm commending Jared Padalecki for his performance because Sam Winchester was last year, Walker is just a few months later.
The person that Sam Winchester was, was kind of young, needed direction, always turned to his older brother. Walker isn't like that. Cordell is a grownass man with teenage children. Somehow I just can't get over that
Mon: And the fact that Sam Winchester was such a rule follower, whereas Cordell’s middle name is basically rule breaker. I just really like that. I mean, we know that an actor is supposed to be able to disappear into new roles, but it's always funny when you go from 15 years as one person and then suddenly he's just living in the boots of Cordell Walker.
Despite that, I have to say that the performances throughout are very The CW. Either people are speaking rather staccato, or they're a little bit singy-songy and melodious. I feel like they need to up the ante a little bit, because this kind of show, with its drama and its family dynamics, it requires a little bit more nuance. But it hasn't really affected how I enjoy the show.
Tumblr media
Ron: I think for the most part, Jared Padalecki and Lindsey Morgan are doing a very good job. I love the chemistry between the two characters, they feel like their partners, and it makes it really fun to watch. The parents, played by Mitch Pileggi and Molly Hagan, that's a dynamic that I'm very interested in watching more of. I don't know where they're going with it, but it's not what I expected.
Mon: I feel like they’re teetering on the brink of being a soap opera with Abeline and Bonham, but they're constantly restraining, so I want to know what they're planning to do with them. Because I feel like Bonham, especially, he's changed since the pilot. He's not the person who we were introduced to during the pilot episode, and that's a good thing because I didn't like that guy. With Abeline, she's a very different kind of character, and I almost feel like she's an antihero,
Ron: Or is it Bonham who the antihero?
Mon: Oooooo
Ron: There is some tension between these two characters. We aren't given much information. They’re eking it out for the audience, and it's so unexpected. Every time they come on screen I'm just like, ‘What is going on what is happening with these two?’ Sometimes they're happy to be together, a lot of times they're not. I feel like we're gonna get to know something which is gonna change how we watch the show.
When it comes to acting, I think the young ones, Violet Brinson, who play Stella, and Kale Culley, who plays August, they've taken some time to settle into their roles. It's one of the same problems that we kind of have with Superman & Lois, where Superman and Lois are great to watch, but the children? Not so much.
Mon: Yeah, I would say the weakest link in the show is definitely Stella and August, especially August. I feel like they want to do something with this character, but he's just been left behind. With Stella, she's almost the conduit for some of the drama, some of the flashbacks, and some of the race-talk that is happening. But with August, he's not even an angsty teen; he's just there.
Ron: But I think that relates to how this show is gender swapping a lot of moments. Stella is basically the troublemaker, and it's an understandable reaction because she is grieving and her father wasn't there when she was grieving. So she's acting out just to get attention, which is something that teenagers do. August, on the other hand, is the ‘good’ child. He’s a saint. He doesn't do anything wrong. He immediately allows his father back into their lives and Stella is the one who's questioning, ‘why?’. This man was gone when we needed him. She wants August to stand up for them. But August doesn't. He wants to keep the piece. That's a fun little subversion that I’ve been wanting to see in shows but this one is giving it to us.
And then there are these other little things, like Stella is playing soccer. I have not seen soccer in an American TV show, so that's really unexpected. It's usually American football, or it’s lacrosse, like in Teen Wolf, but soccer? Not so much, so that's fun. You see August kind of helping with the cooking, but he's also very interested in photography. And that's a creative field that we usually see female characters get into. What's also quite interesting in Walker is that both Stella and August are taking after their mother. They do things that she used to like doing, that she was interested in, that they did with her. Their father, not so much, even though he was also absent so they would want to do something that he likes. But it seems like they're genetically predisposed to want to be like their mom, so that's fun.
From what we know of Emily, she was quite multitalented. She was a photographer. She was a great mom. She was a good friend; she was a wonderful wife; she was a handyman. And Walker, on the other hand, is terrible with tools. We don't usually get to see things like that.
Mon: In a way, Walker is defined by only two things: his job and his family. But Emily, despite having such curtailed screen time, is this fully-fledged character, who was so amazing in every way and everybody is like, kind of, always wishing that Emily was there, and not Walker. I don't know if they intended that as a subversion, but it sure comes across as that.
Ron: What Walker does well is that the subversion isn't just limited to the Walker family. Like we see Micki, is the Ranger, but her partner, Trey, is a nurse. Now, this is something that used to drive me up the wall about most shows that were, you know, in any way action-oriented, sci-fi, fantasy. Female characters were almost always relegated to the role of healer or nurturer, male characters got to go out there and fight. But here, it's exactly the opposite. Micki is the one who is going out and fighting, whereas Trey is the one who is there to help people and take care of them if things go bad.
Mon: And not just medically. He's also an emotional support for a lot of people. Like he's there for Stella, he's there for Walker. He's also there for Micki. So again, that's why we need a refreshing change from what we've always had. And I like that it’s the CW which is doing it because, yeah, they’re kind of on the map because of their superhero stuff, but we've always found that even with the superhero stuff, there have been times when we felt like they could have pushed some boundaries, but they didn't. And with this show, I'm not saying they're like, completely breaking every possible glass ceiling. I'm just saying that they're doing a very good job of making some cracks.
Ron: I mean there is a strip club scene which is not what it looks like. That's all I'm gonna say.
From episode 2 onwards, every story has been really, really exciting. So, from a writing point of view, the show is also doing a really good job. I've actually found myself surprised by the direction of some of the stories, and that's quite fun, considering we've watched a lot of police procedurals in our lives.
Mon: At this point, it's easy to get a little bit jaded with pop culture. This is our entertainment—action stuff, superhero stuff, we are for it. But you need to innovate. It's a tough landscape, there's so much new content coming out, so much of it is in the same genre. What I feel like with Walker is that, mostly because of Padalecki, he's gonna draw in a completely different crowd, which is the Supernatural crowd. And because it's on The CW, you're also getting eyeballs from an audience who is kind of watching Riverdale in the evenings. And then they got Walker. And you need that balance, because so much content is cruise control. And as we said, this show could easily have been that, but it wasn’t. And it's trying very hard not to.
As we said, there is a certain pattern, because in every episode, you're like, ‘Wait, did they just do that?’ And it makes you sit up and take notice and wonder, ‘okay in all these years, why did no other show have this particular scene?’ And more than anything else, I think that's what's making us come back. It's like, how are they innovating? How are they being more creative and more innovative with the same established storylines and dynamics.
Ron: I'm going to give Walker props for even trying to do things differently, because you just mentioned Riverdale, and that show is entertaining, but it's been so cliched from the very start. And considering its audience, I really would have wanted it to do something a little bit different. There have been times when I’ve watched Riverdal and I thought, ‘Oh okay, that's a little bit different.’ But honestly, it just doesn't try that hard.
Mon: No, in fact, some of the messaging in there is problematic to say the least. Young people are watching it, and, well, young people are on The CW a lot, and I do worry that they need to get a strong message about what's right, what's wrong and what you should be questioning,
And that's what Walker is doing. It is acknowledging the privilege of this family. But at the same time, it is also telling us that they have their own struggles. Are their struggles greater than other people? No. But this is the story that we’re being told, because we need the audience stand in, and as we know the easiest way for the audience to walk into a show is through somebody who apparently looks like them.
Ron: The people around the Walker family are people of color. So you have Micki, you have Trey, you have Captain James, Stella's friend, August’s possible love interest, they haven't got there yet. Even Cordell’s brother Liam, his partner is a person of color. So you've got this in with the Walker family, but around them, you’ve got all these people of color who we definitely are interested in and invested in. It could have easily been the other way around, and I would have liked that, but I'll take it.
Mon: I think the smart move by the writers has been that not only do we have an in with a white family, but we're also looking through their eyes to understand the different viewpoints of the people around them. And essentially what's happening is that no one is being made to feel alienated in a circumstance or an environment that they feel is their own. So, the fact that the white family has a ranch, and stuff like that okay, yeah, that's aspirational for a lot of people. But you also have the Black captain who is new. So you have that audience who is enjoying being part of a club, if you could say, that hasn't always represented them. And then you have, of course, with Micki, and the dichotomy of being a Texas Ranger, when the Texas Rangers are such a problem for the Latinx community. So it’s this inclusivity, which I guess we’re really, there for.
Ron: And that's all just within the first six episodes, so I really don't know where this show is going to be going. I'm very excited by its direction. And I'm really surprised that from all the shows that we've seen Walker is the one that's making us think, ‘well, this is doing something different’.
Mon: Yeah, and I think it's fortuitous that we are recording this episode after episode 6. That was some episode! A lot happened, they packed in a lot. There were a lot of twists and turns too; a lot of bombshells in there. And it's actually making us rethink how we have viewed some of the characters. There are some revelations coming and I don't think we're gonna like it.
Ron: Well, I for one, am totally invested in this show. Episode 6 felt like it was a turning point. According to Anna Fricke, the showrunner, things are gonna be happening. I cannot wait to find out what they are.
So, there you have it. We're really enjoying the first six episodes of Walker, which is not something we thought that we would be saying on our podcast.
Mon: But we’re glad we are. Because, you know what, if you haven't caught this show because you think it's not your kind of show, give it a shot. And give it a shot beyond just the pilot episode because you're in for a ride.
Ron: And some really great characters.
Mon: Absolutely.
Ron: Have you watched Walker? What did you think of it? We'd love to hear from you.

Ok so a thing I really love about Kencyrath is how legit the religion in it feels. And part of why it feels so legit and like a real religion unlike some other fictional religions I’ve seen is like...Just how total this thing is in the Kencyr mindset and life. There is nothing in their culture that is not colored by their faith. Their anxieties, how they act, how they are raised, how they speak. All of that is colored by this religion.
So like we have things like how Jame is just absolutely mortified by being called a liar. We have things like people finding clever ways around the lying thing. Either by finding ways of deceiving people while not actually lying or by finding a way of declaring that this lie is a justified one. This not lying commandment is such a heavy thing that it is a nigh constant concern and anxiety for them. Their culture and the concerns are shaped by it. To be Kencyr and to be part of that religion is to just have these anxieties about lying and to have these like cultural games you play to get around it.
There’s also like how a lot of the focus on Tori’s torture based trauma is specifically on the fact that he can’t profess belief in more than one god. He is an obligate monotheist. This is not a thing he can argue with. So a lot of the focus when he is having his bad times trauma feels with it is focused around the ‘But I am a monotheist’. The physical pain is definitely a big part of it too, but there is just this like. Constant shadow of ‘But I am a monotheist’. Like he is helpless and cannot weasel out of things because of this religious belief which just permeates all things.
We have like the way the Kencyr talk. They say things like ‘Trinity’ a lot and they have a fear around saying the names of God directly. Instead preferring just epithets. There’s how the names of figures like Gerridon and the Dream-Weaver are used. What those names symbolize. Why Jame’s name is absolutely fucking unspeakable and every just assumes she must be Jameth because like why would name your child the equivalent of Super Satan?
And we first get to see this from like how outsiders see it. Which is very weird, actually. Jame gets used as a fucking lie detector by someone and others are like ‘wow you weird fucking kennies’ about her a lot. And then we get to see it from the inside and we get to learn things alongside Jame. And as we keep going we see more and more weird Kencyr cultural shit and that weird Kencyr cultural shit all finds its way back to the religion somehow. You cannot eat, sleep, or breathe without it tying back to the religion somehow. It’s not just a belief in God. It is a culture. A series of actions, philosophies, worldviews. The entire way in which the world and life is interpreted is through this specific religious lens and whatever your personal thoughts on God are what it boils down to is you’re Kencyr so you’ve got to do things the Kencyr way culturally so it’s time to get really god damn weird about lying and turn ‘But it is REALLY lying?’ into a national sport.

1. Mad Sweeney/Laura Moon - Where would I be without my drunk not-a-leprechaun and dead wife? Sad and alone just like Laura, that’s what. Legit didn’t expect them of all things to pull me so far into AG, but here we are. I've thought about them all damn day (like today specifically) and I am so sad that we probs won’t ever get another scene with them ever again because damn that ending shot!!
2. Kylo|Ben/Rey - Ok so yeah they’ve taken over my life. It’s like post TLJ but even more now because I don’t give a fuck. Fandom made me squirrel away my love for them quickly after TLJ but now I just want them alive and happy and to forget TROS happened and write them the ending they deserve
3. Bellarke (ft. Murven) - Literally the only reasons I’m still watching this trash show. I find it doubtful Murven will kiss in the last season since John proposed to Emori (which as a multi-shipper I like Memori too but ???) BUT there’s still hope for Bellarke, aka the ship that rips my heart out year after year and stomps on it and then hands it back while looking proud.

When Bucky wakes up 68 years after crashing a plane into the Atlantic, his first question is about Steve Rogers.
He finds him in a nursing home outside New York City. But the story doesn’t end there.
In which, Erskine never made it out of Europe, Steve never got the serum, and Bucky is the one who wakes up in the future.
this looks very interesting! not typically the kind of fic i read, but i can’t wait to check it out regardless :)
we carry our lives around in our memories by biblionerd07
James doesn’t remember why he has a metal arm. The doctors say he had an accident and has brain damage. Sometimes he wishes he could remember. But every morning he gets to eat breakfast with his friend Steve, so it’s not so bad. James thinks he and Steve might be dating, kind of. It’s alright if he doesn’t remember everything. Steve doesn’t mind.
this fic seems similar to one i read like a year ago, and I remember that fic being really good, so i think this one will be too!
young hearts, out our minds by junko
Bucky posts a selfie of the two of them in bed to his instagram.
He hashtags it #goodmorningamerica. Sam Wilson and Pepper Potts retweet it to their twitter accounts.
i’m pretty sure i read this fic like right after i got into the mcu… like even before i got into the mcu, when all i knew was that the pretty blond boy someone kept reblogging to my dash looked sad and i had to know why.. anywho, this fic is lovely and fun and uplifting and thank you for reminding me of it!
Geriatric Road Trip, 2015 by what_alchemy
Bucky was the eldest of four.
this looks so wonderful i can’t wait to read it!! like with only the title and summary and very few tags i already know i’m going to enjoy it :))
Nightcall by thegrimshapeofyoursmile
“This is good,” James says a little surprised and his fingertips rest on a white space of paper while he looks at the black lines that form his face, half-hidden by his shoulder-long hair. It looks dangerous. It looks lonely. It looks-
“I mean I can give it to you and you–wait, what?” Little guy says in confusion, then knits his eyebrows together before it eases into something quite pleased. “Thank you. It’s just a quick sketch, but–I hope you don’t mind me saying that, but this metal prosthesis of yours is quite remarkable.”
“You have a strange taste in men,” James replies without thinking and when he realizes what he is doing he hands over the sketch pad as quickly as possible. He does not flirt with people nor does he try to find out more about their tastes that easily. Not anymore.
Little guy just smiles, looks at him with blue, blue eyes and says, “Well, what are your tastes, then?”

A.k.a The Winter Soldier goes out and finds himself his very own willowy boyfriend.
who doesn’t love a shrinkyclinks fics??? i can’t wait to check this one out!!
family means no one gets left behind or forgotten by cosmicocean
“Why did you think I wouldn’t like you for being gay?” Steve asks gently.
“You’re Captain America.” Eli’s got his teeth clenched and is resolutely looking ahead. “You stand for truth and justice and the American way. You stand for American morals. You stand for…” he shrugs awkwardly. “Not people like me.”
Steve blows the air out of his cheeks slowly, trying to figure out how to keep the anger out of his voice so Eli doesn’t think it’s at him.
Or, Steve comes to terms with his new world, and gains some children in the process.
okay was someone going to tell me there was a fic where steve rogers adopts some gay kids or was i just supposed to read about it in a fic recs by myself?!?!?!? okay that doesn’t really work bc you legit just told me about it BUT OMG I WANT TO READ THIS SO BADLY WHAT THE HECK.. thank you. so much.
Ghost Stories by hitlikehammers
Steve doesn’t like bullies, on principle. It’s less about justice, or decency, or righteous indignation; more about the look in the eyes of the people getting stepped on, the people getting trampled, the people getting lost.
So it cuts all the deeper, when Steve recognizes strength, precision, endurance, capacity: sees the pieces of himself not born but made, reflected in this body, this person, this weapon: the Winter Soldier.
It slices through Steve’s soul when he returns the Soldier’s gaze, and reads the only thing that lives in the deadness that pervades behind those irises in the night.
It’s not You can’t beat me.
It’s more You can’t stop them.
For the prompt: The AU where Steve Rogers sees the best in everyone, and it is that quality that brings him back the person he loves most in the world; where Steve reaches out to help the Winter Soldier on principle, but when the muzzle-mask comes off, he finds Bucky Barnes.
this whole concept??? beautiful. i cannot wait to read this
And Shadows Will Fall Behind by leveragehunters
The world was full of things no one could have expected.
Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes never expected to fall from a train into decades of torture and killing.
HYDRA never expected their perfect Winter Soldier’s programming to shatter.
And Bucky, who’d once been the Winter Soldier, who was now an auxiliary to the Avengers, never expected to look down from a rooftop in New York City, where he was keeping watch over the world’s most ineffectual aspirant supervillains, and see a tiny ball of angry sunshine. Fierce and fearless, he loosed feelings in Bucky that he’d thought were gone forever.
Bucky was determined to see him again. The better thing would have been to introduce himself. Not to stealthily follow him as he leapt across the rooftops, strong and agile, feet touching down like he was doing gravity a favour.
The world may have been full of things no one could have expected, but Bucky probably shouldn’t have been surprised when his tiny ball of fierce, angry sunshine dumped him on his ass.
listen this is a shrinkyclinks loving household and i am so excited for the tol-smol dynamic about to play out in this fic.. thank you
Lovecraft in Brooklyn by littleblackfox
Bucky shrugs. “My brothers wish me dead. But I have claimed this world as mine, and should any dare approach I will slaughter them, and their progeny.”“Oh,” Steve says weakly. “Well, it’s tough coming from a large family.”
umm okay, I , like steve, am mildly confused, but i will check it out bc why the heck not my dude
where the dread fern grows by silentwalrus
Sam’s gotta buy a wedding present, and nothing but elf booze will do.
i love magical realism and who doesn’t want bucky as a witch??? a must-read for sure.
AND WITH THAT we come to the end of this beautiful fic rec, thank you so much for all the recommendations, I can’t wait to check them out and I hope y’all (as in my followers, my dudes) get a chance to read them too!
(seriously this whole thing is beautiful, tysm *cries in gay* happy pride y’all)

TCOG or TCOV (aka Anthony, James, Prince and Gabriel)
Title: The Council of Glitches or The Council of Viruses (either one ya wanna call the four of them, TCOG or TCOV for short) I... had nothing super cool or unique but eh whatever its blunt n straightforward | Names: Anthony, James, Prince, Gabriel | Genders: Male | Species/Race: Glitch/Virus | Ages: All unknown | Heights: Anthony is 100ft, James is 110ft, Prince is 99ft (he's only a bit shorter than Anthony, I was gonna make him the tallest but eh, its too expected) annd finally, Gabriel is 120ft (he is the tallest of the bunch and is d a m n proud of it) | Hair Colors: Anthony's hair is a Bright Green (its obnoxiously bright, his hair is also pretty messy n poofy, he- he doesnt take care of it TOO much), James hair is Black (his hair is slicked back and he seems to take DAMN good care of it as well), Prince's hair is a very soft light pastel yellow (Messy Undercut, his hair is v e r y curly as well), annd finally, Gabriel's hair is a mixture of Black to a Fiery Red sorta color (that's the best way I can explain it also its in the style of: Mid Fade + Layered Fringe) | Eye Colors: Anthony's eyes are a Bright Green (im just gonna say it right now, all of their pupils are normal except Gabriel's which are slit BUT, their pupils can change colors depending on their moods (like you know the basic colors that symbolize each emotion) oh and as a bonus, they can also turn them into symbols if they so want or depending on the situation, their tears are also colorful but the more distressed and upset they all become, the more their tears static out until it SOUNDS like static) James' eyes are a Taupe color (its a dark shade of brown n such), Prince's eyes are a bumblebee color (that looked the best to me n fitting), Gabriel has two different eye colors, one is pitch black, the other is a dark red. | Appearance: Anthony mostly wears outstanding clothing, bright colored clothes to be more precise, it doesn't matter if its a suit or normal comfortable clothing, so long as it captures everyone's attention and puts focus on himself, he doesn't have any scars surprisingly, he does have a short boxed beard (I will say him, James, and Gabriel have short boxed beards, Prince has a circle beard), James mostly wears the fanciest clothing, its all suits and tuxedos, not overly brightly colored unlike Anthony, he doesn't like bright colors or bright clothing but of course, he doesn't mind Anthony wearing them, if that's what makes him happiest, James has a few pixels out of places which is technically like a scar to them but he keeps it hidden most of the time. Prince wears a lot of soft, light colored hoodies/sweaters/turtlenecks, he loves that kind of clothing because its so warm and soft, if there's an important/formal event going on he will wear a suit but it can't be an overly bright or really dark colored one, he doesn't... like either of those, soft pastel colors are more his style, he has no scars which he would if he had ever gotten a chance to be apart of any of the serious fights (but they didn't let him, its not because they think he's weak of course.) annd finally, Gabriel's clothing style is punk, his shirts are usually black, his pants are punk-style with chains hanging off them, and he wears combats boots, he has MANY scars and pixels missing from his body, his most prominent scars include: A scar over his right eye, and pixels missing from his arms and legs. (Gabriel also has like, sharp claws and sharp teeth bc he needs the intimidating factor) | Personalities: Anthony is narcissism incarnate, he wants ALL the attention, all attention on him from the lower life forms, the more compliments he gets the more he MIGHT be merciful on some of them ...Maybe, he's very cocky and confident, (they all love each other though of course, despite their differences, Anthony, James, Prince, and Gabriel love each other very much), Anthony usually mocks the other glitches and viruses for being so insignificant power and size-wise, their such... lower life forms compared to him and his partners (tl;dr: Narcissism incarnate, cocky, confident, makes fun of the tinier weaker beings n such, loves ALL the attention on him, unless its with his partners then he's happy to share as much attention as he can with them) James is a serious person, he has absolutely no chill most of the time, he can... relax around the others but for the tiny glitches and viruses of their virtual world, he's tough, cold, serious and gets straight to the point of any situation, he shows them no kindness, he doesn't think lower beings such as that deserve kindness or anything of the sort, it will only make them weaker, more pathetic, unfit to even exist at that point (tl;dr: 100% Serious like he legit has no chill unless around his partners, he... he shows them affection and care and he WILL protect them with his life if the situation calls for it, he won't ever let a being try and harm them, relaxes but only around them, to any other being he's cold, ya know serious, just gets straight to the point with them and then that's it, he's leaving, shows little to no kindness with anyone but his partners) Prince is super soft, kind, sweet, and honestly... He doesn't look at these tiny creatures, humans, glitches, viruses, whatever it may be... He doesn't look at them as weak or insignificant, now sure, he CAN easily crush a being as small as that n such, but he... He doesn't view them as weak, insignificant, or pathetic... In fact, he likes tiny beings, there's just... Something about them, now of course when he's around his partners, he... he will act tough, confident, and he won't show any care towards the tiny beings, in fear his partners might get mad at him or then begin to think he's weak (which they'd never, James secretly knows of Prince's kindness towards tiny beings, he doesnt... understand it, nor does he really approve but he'd... never confront Prince about it, he just couldn't, now Gabriel or Anthony? Oh they could h e h) (tl;dr: Sweet, kind, soft, he DOES have a few anxieties here n there and worries, when around the others he puts on an act of toughness, confidence, and will not talk or show any care towards tiny beings) Now Gabriel, oh, oh god... He is the WORST bastard, he is the last one you'd EVER want to get stuck with, he can be cruel, vicious, mean and downright horrible to glitches, viruses, humans it doesn't matter! Their all weak, pathetic, so e a s y to crush, to hurt, to k i l l... He won't EVER hesitate to kill anyone unless his partners instruct him specifically not to, then he'll begrudingly listen, but he's not happy about it... He doesn't see a point in letting the others live, their of no use anyways! He might be downright horrible and horrifying to the tiny beings, but to his partners? He... He can actually be super kind and sweet towards them and them only, now sometimes he does like to cause trouble or tease them but he'd never hurt them... He really does love and care about them, and like James, he'd defend them until his dying breath (tl;dr: BASTARD MAN who does love his partners v v much, smooches to them! But to the rest of his race or humans? N o p e, y'all are dead motherfuckers, or your gonna be tortured by him) | Side Facts: Their not brothers, their not "partners in crime" t h e i r in a p o l y relationship, yep! they ALL love each other very much, they have from the very beginning, the first time they all had met, things were awkward, it was weird... but over time... They grew close with each other, they... They all loved each other, and they knew they were destined to rule over the virtual world and of course eventually the real one so, if their going to rule all the worlds... Then they are going to do it together and thems the facts. (so p much despite literally ALL their differences, they were made for each other, even if it was awkward or weird at first, they eventually grew attached to each other) They technically ARE kinda like kings or whatever, but they are ALSO a council, they are responsible for pretty much EVERYTHING over the virtual world, they all have roles to play, some of them do things that the other can't or isn't able to do, etc- (kinda like how James takes care of the armies, he sends them out to take over or something, etc) Anthony usually handles formal events or getting the meetings together, its surprising coming from him but he manages it, Gabriel... oh boy, he- he doesn't have a SPECIFIC set role, honestly, Gabriel does what Gabriel wants UNLESS his partners don't want him to then he won't but he's not happy about it, Prince... he's honestly the best one you could get sent to or the best one to even find you or whatever.

Supergirl 4x06 “Call To Arms” Liveblog
SPOLIERS!!!! obviously
Oh no, what asshole trained this dog to dislike aliens? Not cool
I’m all for the team up with Manchester Black
Lena, baby, you look incredible but what are you doing? Also where is your lab coat and safety gear? Give me Lena in a lab coat, you cowards!!!!
Um what? She booked James on the show? What the fuck is she his secretary? Does she make his doctor appointments too? Pick up his dry cleaning? Wtf is this bullshit?
Aw, she still trying to cure cancer :( Sidebar: did Lionel die of cancer in this universe?
If the Colonel thinks she can stop Kara Zor-El from answering a cry for help she’s better fucking check herself. I don’t care what neighborhood it’s in
There’s a cafeteria at the DEO?!??
10/10 Harry Potter references
Good job, Brainy, you keep doing you
Oh SHIT! She actually picked up his dry cleaning????? Ooooo I’m salty
Ugh, I did not come here for this Lames drama. I DON’T CARE!
Uh I will admit tho I like when Lena goes from friend/girlfriend to Boss Ass Bitch in like 2 seconds flat. That shit is hot
I am 100% here for J’onn & Manchester’s friendship. I am 65% here for the torture of this bigot
It was definitely uncool for Lena to book that interview without telling him.
Haha two episodes in a row someone has pointed out that Lena is right almost always
Somebody get that baby a Redbull
If she had narcolepsy wouldn’t she know that it’s ya know called narcolepsy? I’m wondering if Nia is aware of her abilities and just hasn’t come to terms with them or explored them yet.
Brainy is a master of deception. I love him
A white guy in a black van? Seems legit
Question...what kinda hearts are these? And where does she get them? Are they artificial or animal hearts maybe?
Hahaha Eve: “I don’t like them that much anyway.”
What’s the treatment for narcolepsy? Medication?
YASS!! Nia for thanksgiving!!
Aw Nia and Kara are an adorable duo. I don’t stand that close to people when I give pep-talks or gently touch their hair but you know whatever. Kara’s hair does look great, as usual
Oh fuck NO UGH I’ve never been so annoyed to see Sam Witwer’s face
I would just like to point out that actual cockroaches are also living breathing beings.
It’s really hard for me to accept that this dog might be anything other than a good boy
Pointing out that there have been Alien Attacks/Invasions that have resulted in human casualties is really sort of ironic when you account for human terrorist groups and movements throughout history that have resulted in human casualties. How are hostile aliens any different?
I’m not sure how pointing out the hypocrisy of thanksgiving is really doing anything to help your cause, my man.
Yay! The Thanksgiving scene!!!! LENA IS HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ahhhhh! The found family keeps growing and I love it SO fucking much
Yeah Nia is definitely lying about the narcolepsy. She pulled that out of her ass to cover for her abilities
Damn, Lames is chilly on this November day
Go ahead, Lena, talk about how strong Supergirl is some more hehe
Alex: “They’d be playing God.” -> Lena internally: “But that’s my favorite game.”
There are so many geniuses in the room
Um, I’m sorry but didn’t they literally mark Jewish homes and businesses with the star of David during the Holocaust? Or right before the Holocaust. Disgusting
Right, Kara, somebody better call Supergirl *wink wink*
Oh good Lames is fighting again. This is so enjoyable. Oh and now Lena is heartbroken, even better. That was sarcasm btw Ugh, why would I want any of this?
What’s with these pop star hoodies tho?
Oh YASS Brainy, get them! Awesome to see him fight (sorta)
OH. MY. GOD. These bigoted goons are carrying actually FUCKING TIKI TORCHES HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA The CW is calling out neo nazis SO hard on this one . Wow
OOOOOOH SHIT! Yes SPIKE! GET THEM!!! Holy mother of god what a lizard
Kara, please don’t hurt Spike! He’s the real MVP here
“Ok, Melissa, today we need you to act like you’re holding a dragon by the tail, and you are mildly inconvenienced by it, cool?”
You were a GOOD BOY, Spike!!! A damn good boy
Omg did Kara just canon confirm that there were dragons on Krypton? We are truly blessed
She’s definitely going to disobey direct orders again.
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Not a platform
Neato, Eliza’s life sounds kinda lit
I sometimes forget Alex and her mom are both Doctors. Do they bond over that? Talk about nerdy science things? I bet Lena would be interested in the inter-terrestrial genetic whatcha-ma-call-it Eliza is working on
Whoa Lena is wearing a collared shirt buttoned up all the way. A Queen
Lena, no
James, no
Lames, NOOOOO
What is James even doing in that promo? Is he acting to gain there trust? Alex is gonna be pissed when Kara gets abducted
Um, where Russian!Kara at tho? I miss her beautiful serious face and skin tight jumpsuit

OUAT Rewatch 4X13 - Unforgiven
Will this be the QUEEN-tesentail episode of the series or not?
Tumblr media
Shut up! That was funny!
In any event, you can find my thoughts below the cut!
Main Takeaways
Past
I feel like this episode should’ve had more featured about bad things that the Queens of Darkness, namely Ursula and Cruella have done in the past. Snow and David are about as untrusting of them as they ever were to Regina (Snow literally says “they’re almost worse than Regina”), but the audience, even upon seeing this episode for the second time, don’t have a ton of context because so few of their misdeeds are depicted. While one can assume that more was known about Maleficent from her conflicts with Briar Rose and Aurora, Cruella (Whose misdeeds were done mostly in another realm) and Ursula don’t have that benefit. Even within the confines of this episode, it’s Maleficent who kills the guards and while our other queens agree with the decision, they play no direct part in it. It’s just “ooh badness -- how evil!” I feel like even a reference to past deeds would’ve done so much (Ex. “You destroyed the docks.” or “You had a set of beavers tear apart their dam and flood a town.”). This by no means destroys the flashback in my eyes, but it does fail when later episodes don’t provide a ton of villainy (Or any in Ursula’s case) to either woman.
“No.” Never has a singular word pissed me off so much. This singular word said to Maleficent as she begs to work together as mothers is DISGUSTING. Snow places her piety above her child as well as Mal’s and it is ABHORRENT. Jeez, even before the reveal of what happened, Snow was already coming off as so vile from this moment.
Present
It’s very interesting rewatching this episode with the full knowledge of what Snow and David did to Maleficent. It’s frustrating because Snow tries to stop Mal’s first reaction to seeing them, but because of the need for a twist in this episode, she’s not able to give her an actual apology like I’m pretty sure Snow would have under other circumstances.
”They remind of a time in my life I’d rather forget, time when I was a true villain.” I LOVE this line. I think a line like this is one of Regina’s best in regards to a reflection on her own past. She’s not falsely playing a victim, but shows that she wants to forget this time in her life because it was a time period where she did horrible things. This is a self aware Regina, not pitying herself but still trying to move on. It’s sympathetic enough as a line while not ignoring how bad Regina was. It doesn’t blame anyone for remembering these things -- Regina’s angry at being embarrassed in front of Henry.
I liked Emma and Killian’s conflict in this episode. Like with the Regina line that I mentioned earlier, it’s a good reflection on Killian’s shame over his past villainy and shows a large amount of self awareness. Killian is definitely framed as in the wrong for lying -- as he should -- and the conversations throughout this episode effectively show facets of his and Emma’s characters. Killian is someone who despite his quips and praise over his appearance and abilities does experience self loathing and Emma understands this and wants to help, provided he be honest with her. She doesn’t need the whole truth per-se, accepting his desire for the matter to stay private, but wants him to at least be truthful about that desire and not hide behind denial. And once he apologizes and tells her basically that, she’s supportive of him and assures him. I will say that I wish that at least some suggestion from Emma that Killian confront how he wronged Ursula with her was thrown out in the conversation (Ex. “And you can come back from it”), but it does make Killian’s decision to do it on his own a few episodes later much stronger for his character.
I find it interesting how Snow and David’s lie about their change in morality ends up having a positive effect for Emma. I don’t think it undercuts the truth of the moral, as it does accurately fit Emma and Killian’s dynamic at its conclusion in this episode (And that theme resonates especially well with Emma), but it is weird how it originates from a lie. That having been said, within the confines of the lie, to give no consequences at all to people who stole from a store is kind of...well, dumb, but given that it’s Storybrooke and there are bigger matters to worry about, it’s fine.
“Because they’re villains and we’re heroes.” While I HATED the interpretation of Snow’s possession in “Bleeding Through,” I did like how it was clear about how this black-and-white morality between heroes and villains was utter BS. Because of that, I find it really annoying to see this line. While I know that it’s a lie, the fact that it goes straight-up believed and unchallenged by Emma and Killian (Especially Killian, the more I think about it) makes it feel like no one learned that. And I know it’s a theme of the series, but by now, the lessons been learned a few times over so a line like that going unchallenged is really out of place.
Stream of Consciousness
-Wow! Neal sleeps in the kitchen! These guys REALLY need more space!
-Awww! I love how David is sitting on the steps right by Neal so he can simultaneously protect Emma!
-”Hello, mum.” This is Will Scarlet’s best line. Granny is everyone’s mum!
-Day-um, son! Regina’s getting one hell of a brag up (Because for them, it’s not a takedown) from Cruella and Ursula! XD
-”Chocolate frosted donuts.” I feel like if Regina wasn’t about to deal with the two Queens, she’d be lecturing Henry about not eating like crap. XD
-”I’ve been dying for a grilled cheese all day.” I appreciate that Emma has a legit appetite, especially for someone who runs around town all day!
-I love how word travels so fucking quickly in Storybrooke. What must their text chains look like?! XD
-So, you have to wonder where Mal went while she was “dead.” Thoughts? If she was in the Underworld, i bet Hades pitched a fit so big that Liam was roasting marshmallows from his bar when it happened.
-”You’re getting crumbs all over the book.” Not to be a nitpicker, but a donut with that consistency would not have crumbs! XD
-”If only your wits matched your looks.” Looks like James/Cruella had a bit of foreshadowing! XD
-Cruella’s remarks still crack me up!
-Wait, the station has security footage from Gold’s? Like, I like that that exists because it’s GOLD, but it’s just surprising is all! When was this installed?
-You guys really think two villains will just leave town with your secret after being screwed over and not reveal that secret out of pure spite?! I would PAY to see an alternate cut of this scene with Regina there to point that out with a sassy one-liner.
-I have to wonder what would’ve happened had Snow and David admitted their lie to Emma earlier. Thoughts?
-Can you imagine the Queens of Darkness sleeping in those crazy costumes?! XD
-I really like the set of the Tree of Knowledge and wish we saw it again! It’s really cool!
-Ummmm, Snow, David, shouldn’t you be concerned with why Mal’s ashes are in a convenient little pile?
-Damn, Marco’s got jokes! XD
-”I’d say she’s moved on.” I LOVE how the villains, despite working together, are still underhanded in shit like this! XD
-”You’re positively radiant, my dear.” Was I the only one thinking that Snow was wondering if Mal was hitting on her? XD
-Damn, even finding out about her pregnancy sucked for Snow! I feel really bad for her!
-Mal, if you want to torture Snow and David, why wouldn’t you reveal their secret before they have the chance to? That way, their family and the town at large would trust them less, isolating them and making your further revenge easier.
-Snow and David are so freakin’ awkward! XD
-Robert Carlyle’s acting as he sees Belle and Will Scarlet kiss was fantastic! Look at how he looks like he’s about to cry and how he basically crawls into the darkness because of how torn up he is. That is AMAZING!
-Mal rattling her little rattle breaks my fucking heart!
Favorite Dynamic
Regina and Marco. This really comes down to a singular, effective line: “After ruining everyone else’s happy ending, what makes you think you deserve one of your own?” I am so happy this line and the ensuing conversation was put in. One aspect of Regina’s redemption that I take issue with is that Regina’s smaller victims are often denied a chance to voice their oppositions to said redemption. While Snow and David do get chances to voice their frustrations, smaller victims like Leroy, Granny, Ruby, and Marco don’t get that chance beyond the occasional quip. Because of that, a moment like this really means something. And I like that while the camera pans to show Regina’s reaction to this, it doesn’t linger on her, showing that this isn’t a sympathetic moment for Regina. I also found Regina’s apology to be pretty decent. While I wish it had less excuses within it and Marco was a little too easy to forgive, it did feel authentic to Regina’s character as well as genuine.
Writer
Andrew Chambliss and Kalinda Vazquez are large and in charge today! I don’t have a ton to say. Apart from a few issues that I mentioned above, I feel like they did a decent job here. The story just needed a… ONCE OVER (AND OMG I’M THE ONCE OVER THINKER! I THINK ON WHAT THEY SHOULD’VE DONE A ONCE OVER ON! XD )! The stories are appropriately framed, tell themselves well enough, and setup the future conflicts decently.
Rating
8/10.

Unexpected friendship
Prompt - Could you possibly be able to do an I’m a celeb one shot for my B’day on 12th December. A James centric one where he has to do a trial with Nick but something goes wrong and he has a panic attack and they can’t get out so Nick has to calm him down and comfort him until they’re rescued. Thankyou so much, love your writing!
 ------
‘I’m a celeb’ definitely was a one-time experience for James that he will never forget in his life. Spending quite a bit of time away from your friends and family, in a jungle with less resources proved to be not only physically challenging but tough on the mental side too. But James was determined to get through it all. He was ready to face any task and to fight any battle. But there were times when things got a bit tough. And that’s when James found a bit of support in a co-contestant, Nick.
------
James knew that ‘I’m a celeb’ was never going to be easy. He watched the preceding seasons and he prepared a bit beforehand but the live experience was something else. Early on, he realized that homesickness was going to be a major factor given that he has spent quite a bit of time with his bandmates more than his family lately. And then there was that feeling of being wary of your co-contestants. But James was an easy going boy. He was very friendly hence it didn’t take long for the others to be fond of him. Especially Nick. And given how they had tasks lined up together for them, their friendship was going to prove quite handy much ahead.
------
The latest trial had James in quite a fix. After all, it wasn’t really nice to have thousands of bugs all over your face. So as to win meal stars, James and Nick had all kind of bugs, including mealworms, crickets, cockroaches, scorpions and spiders, dumped directly onto their faces. It was quite legit for someone to panic in such situations and so did James. All these bugs creeping on his upper body and especially over his face, induced a panic attack as the boy struggled to keep calm but luckily Nick seemed to be aware of what was going on as he kept up a light encouragement, keeping the boy focused on the task as well as trying to not lose the boy to a panic attack.
------
“I can’t do this… I can’t…” James blurted out, all of a sudden.
“Yes you can. Come on boy, just focus on the task” Nick encouraged the boy.
“No… No… You don’t get it. There’s bugs all around me. I cannot” James started breathing a little too heavy which was quite concerning for Nick.
“Hey… Hey… James, are you okay? Hey buddy, relax!” Nick tried to draw his attention towards him.
“The bugs…” James trailed off.
“Shit! James, you’re having a panic attack buddy. Just relax a little for me. Breathe” Nick tried to coach him.
“Can’t breathe… Bugs…” James drew a sharp breath in.
“You have to breathe. Breathe in through your nose and keep your shut partially. Breathe buddy.” Nick whisper-yelled.
Nick was holding his own breath as he waited to see if James was doing as he said and when he heard the boy breathing a bit better, he let out a sigh of relief.
Knowing that he had to divert James’s attention so as not to let the boy slip in a panic attack again, Nick started encouraging him to focus on the task ahead.
Thankfully, James took the cue and started working on the task, all while listening to Nick’s encouragement.
Nick’s voice was probably his anchor at the time.
------
As soon as the task was wrapped up, Nick had to pull James out of there himself. He tugged on the boy’s arms, pulling him up and pulling him straight in a hug.
“You did it buddy. You did it.” Nick whispered, patting James’s back.
All he got in return was James clinging to him, breathing a little heavy but he welcomed the sound of the boy breathing over that torturous experience they had just gone through.
While the boys won the trial, the meal was for their Emperor who chose the girls to eat with him. Nevertheless, James was just happy to get out of that task, unharmed.
As he sat away from the group for a little while, Nick approached him.
“You okay now?” Nick asked.
“How embarrassing was that? You think they got in on tape?” James asked.
“Maybe they’ll cut out some part of it. It was a personal thing, you know, having a panic attack…” Nick said, squeezing the boy’s shoulder as he stood up to leave.
“Hey, Nick? Thanks man” James whispered.
“Anytime buddy! Anytime” Nick smiled, pulling the boy in a light hug again.
It felt good to have someone watching your back.
------
There probably would be even more grueling trials ahead and James wasn’t sure if he could get through all of it without losing his mind but he was determined to give it his best shot. And from this trial’s experience, he could rest assured about one thing is that Nick had his back. James would probably leave ‘I’m a celeb’ rich of experiences, with a tougher mindset and with a good friend Nick. It was truly an unexpected friendship but they’d both cherish it, probably even past the show now.
------

Sorry for the delay. Hope you all like it.

February 24: The Circle S3
Very tough day at work. Spent most of it doing search committee stuff (hurts my brain) and then we had a bit of an emergency in the afternoon. So I was wiped out intellectually and emotionally by the time I got home. And it’s dark and rainy and blah out.
So I spent the evening in bed, resting, and finally watching the last eps of The Circle S3. I’ve been binging it but took a little break because even though the ends of their seasons are better than most reality shows, they’re still comparatively boring: everyone suddenly being nice to each other, long sections devoted to people talking about their families and their feelings, drawn out countdowns to the winners, etc. But, it was the only thing I was really up for engaging with today.
Thoughts on this season’s players:
Ava and Chanel: I found them pretty annoying! They grew on me a little but I didn’t miss them when they were gone.
Michelle: I loved Michelle and I was so upset not only by her blocking but by the whole cloning story line that I kind of wanted to quit watching because I hated everyone involved in it on principle. Like I felt that as a twist or a conceit, the cloning concept was too far--gaslighting a person about her own identity is a mild form of psychological torture, and totally unwarranted. Also everyone else proved they had either no brains, or no spines, when they kicked her out: either they didn’t know (even though they should have! the wedding dress stories? CLEMSON?) or they knew better but they followed the herd (Daniel). It was interesting to me that people gravitated toward the fake Michelle and said it was because she seemed more “real” when what they were actually responding to was her fakeness. She conformed more to their idea of the person based on her profile. They WANTED to believe in her. They wanted to believe “my grandma made me this dress” over “I was a single parent marrying a single parent and I bought this ugly-ass dress from the Goodwill because it was all I could afford.” The second is more detailed, and it’s way too bold for a fake, but it doesn’t fit the nice little ‘southern mama’ box and so they rejected it. So “realness” really just becomes a stand in word for “quality I like, quality I feel comfortable with.” All of it was really disheartening honestly. Anyway, Michelle had way more to offer than she was allowed to reveal and I am so bitter that she got the boot so unfairly and so quickly.
Calvin: Smooth like a shark. I liked Calvin a lot and I legit thought his very obvious crush on Kai was adorable. Like when they met and he was trying SO HARD to keep it cool. And I mean it was definitely mutual (her cute little clicky nails at the finale!) and I hope they hung out post-Circle.
Ruksana: A little mild. Her alliances were interesting and I liked her as a person but tbh I wish we’d seen more of the fire she displayed when she went to see Daniel after being blocked. She went OFF. I want to see more of that!
Jackson: Could not believe Jackson lasted as long as “he” did lol. Boring. Usually I find the personas behind the catfish more interesting than the catfish but Rachel was pretty boring too. Most interesting thing she ever said was in her intro, the bit about her type being men with “face tattoos” and “dad bods.” I feel like that’s... a really small demographic?
Daniel: Ngl, when Daniel was first introduced, I hated him, and I was hoping he would swiftly be gone. He was just a little too over the top for me, a little too childish. But after the first ep or so I came to like him more and more and ultimately I think he was one of my favorites for the season. He actually wasn’t a bad strategist ultimately but he took too long to really play the game (dude, you can’t say ‘now I’ll show my strategic side’ for the first time 2/3 of the way through the game?) and he built his alliances too much on the concept of an alliance and not enough on actual friendships. Like, I think James is just not the alpha he thought he was, versus Nick, and he definitely got PLAYED in the Daniel-blocking. But it’s also true that he didn’t really fight to save Daniel because he only cared about him through an alliance. He had more of a real friendship with a member of the other team! Or, maybe, his real mistake was in allying himself with Kai, since all of her friends fell down like dominoes in a row lmao. At any rate, I wish we’d kept Daniel and lost James or even Ashley because the show was less interesting without him.
Oh also eta: he had the BEST outro message I’ve seen on the show yet. It didn’t have the effect I (or probably he) was hoping it would have but he threw some good shade and he actually had the balls to lie! Good on him.
Jacki: I don’t know why they introduced players this late honestly. This season clearly did a better job of spacing out intros, using fake players, and front-ending their new arrivals, so that even people outside the ‘Miranda spot’ (Isabella/Sophia in this instance) had a chance at the final. But Jacki came in waaaaaay too late. I knew immediately she’d be cut when she was; there wasn’t even suspense around it. First, Nick was obviously going to snow James yet again, but more importantly, there’s basically no scenario where someone coming in that late isn’t going to be immediately sacrificed for having a ‘weaker’ connection. And all of this is a SHAME because Jacki is beautiful and I love her. I really don’t have strong opinions on her as a player because she barely got a chance to play (well--I actually do think she was a little too credulous, and I found the ‘evenly divided tribes fighting over her’ to be a little...dumb) but I liked looking at her, which is shallow, but true. Mostly it just seemed unfair to use her as nothing else but a drama pawn. The only difference between her and Vince is that she’s a real person who really thought she could win 100k.
Vince: Obviously the real MVP.
The finalists:
Nick: Look, every single person comes into the Circle and declares they’re going to win (lol you’re not though?) and specifically that they will win by pretending to be harmless and then lying, conniving, back stabbing, and drama-rama-ing their way to the top, but no one actually does this because they all wimp out and make real friends. But Nick said he was going to be brutally strategic and then he WAS and honestly--good for him. He absolutely manipulated people, he lied, he formed strategic alliances, he kept some promises and hid that he had broken others, and he played James like an absolute fiddle TWICE. Yeah, he had Vince’s help, but he still played an exceptional game. Nick isn’t usually the type of player I like but honestly his game was SO good that I had to respect it. The only other player I think was at all similar was Maxime--and he was able to hide a lot of his strategizing through Romain. A lot of strategy players get kicked out early because people see the strategy and recoil from it. Maxime and Nick are the rare ones who make it to the end--but neither of them made it past 5th place.
Nick was my brain-favorite, honestly. If I really thought of The Circle as a game and that the best PLAYER should thus win the GAME, that the prize money was a reward for strategy itself, then the rightful winner was Nick. Plus, he entertained me and, on top of that, he honestly didn’t seem like a bad guy either. Less sentimental about making friends--but his Achilles heel was his horniness/complete lack of gaydar, and so he gained some sympathy for being the screwed over party in a catfish relationship.
Also he reminds me of someone, like, physically, his face looks familiar, but I cannot figure out who it is??? That really bugs me.
Isabella/Sophia: Oh, my adorable little lesbian. I loved her from the moment she announced just how gay she was. Her attempts at taking down Queen Kai were not her most shining ones, but she made up for a lot of that by admitting later it was just because she wanted to be friends so bad and felt snubbed. Poor, jealous Sophia. She obviously had a bit of a girl crush--I don’t mean that in a gay way, but in a, like, non-romantic/non-sexual adoration of a woman you admire way. She also got points with me for coming in after Michelle was eliminated, thus remaining untainted by that whole mess. And I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed every time she’d flirt with Nick because her tone of voice dictating her messages was so far removed from the content of the messages. Adorable. She was my guilty-pleasure fave. I felt like she was always hanging on by a bit of a thread and I didn’t ever think she’d win, but I had the softest spot in my heart for her. (Also Rucksana’s face in the finale...lmao this was the biggest surprise to her?) (Also also...too many queer players were catfishing. What kind of alliance could we have had between Sophia, Matthew, Daniel, and ally James?)
Kai: You know what’s hilarious about Kai, as a player? She was strategic (CCCF!), but she was also pretty genuinely just a kind person who gave people the benefit of the doubt, had pleasant conversations with them, showed her interest in them, and developed friendships. And she became increasingly genuine and decreasingly strategic as time went on. But because of her early popularity and her number of friendships, she was seen as not only a big threat, but such a big threat that she couldn’t even be taken out! Like guys what do you think will happen if you block her? Her ghost will come back to haunt you? I mean maybe but like probably under a different name lol. So instead people went for her closest friends one by one: Calvin, Ruksana, Daniel. If James weren’t consistently an influencer he probably would have gone next. So ironically, being friends with the ‘biggest threat.’ ‘most powerful’ player was essentially the kiss of death. In some ways she reminded me of Elea--a person so legitimately sweet that people assumed her sweetness itself a tactic. Kai was my heart-favorite. By all the standards I usually use to judge Players--not their ability to play the game, but their human qualities, their warmth, their good-heartedness--she was the MVP and deserved the crown. It hurt more than I expected seeing Nick in 5th, and I probably should have suspected from that that Kai would be 4th--but it hurt even more to see her there. Everyone thought those two would be at the top so they rated them lower to keep them from winning, and thus, they sunk to the bottom.
James: I wanted to like James more than I did. Idk... maybe it was that I felt that he was helping to knock out players I liked more, or maybe it’s because he talked a big game about being the alpha or w/e but then let himself get efficiently stomped on by Nick (twice!!), or maybe it’s just a personalities-not-gelling thing but I never really... got James. I appreciate that he was able to make quick, effective decisions early on that got him to the finale even though he was such a late edition. I also appreciate his reactions to Vince. And, even if he missed Matthew/Ashley, he was still the best catfish hunter that the game has ever seen. Bonus points: picking Daniel up and rocking him like a baby in the finale. I guess that’s one way to do an apology--which he SURELY DID owe him. Again, I feel bad for disliking him without a reason but I think he’s the most disappointing winner, and I’m kind of bummed the game shook out that way.
Matthew/Ashley: Sort of shocked he made it to the finale tbh. I didn’t have anything against Ashley, but toward the middle of the game, I sensed maybe his time had come? Like most catfish, his real self was so much more endearing than the profile. I’d often kind of forget what Ashley’s personality was supposed to be because I was so caught up in Matthew. Ultimately, I really do think he was a sweetheart. Everyone’s reactions to his reveal were pretty hilarious though--my favorites being Rucksana’s “Charlie’s Angels my ass!” and James straight up forgetting he was sitting next to “Ashley” on the couch. Also, I got a big kick out of Matthew’s crush on “Daddy Nick” and, I know I shouldn’t, but I found it funny when he just magically turned lesbian Ashley into bisexual Ashley specifically so he--a gay man--could flirt with a straight man. Stuff like that is why I watch the show. I hope real Ashley wasn’t too mad about that lol.
Anyway, it was a good season.. Nothing beats S1 though and I think France is my second fave. I’ll see how well I remember it in the future. (Will it disappear from my brain like S2?) I hope Calvin and Kai got to “see what’s happening” and I hope Nick and “Jackson” hook up, even though Nick doesn’t have a face tattoo OR a dad bod, because Jackson seems into it, and he’s already been burned by one gay gentleman and one gay lady and I think the dude needs to catch a romantic break.
