How ( I think ) several historical/legendary ladies handle their periods :
. Cleopatra VII : Absolutely launches into spa treatment mode often. Doesn't walk around as much as she does. And then often becomes extra cuddly around Caesar and later Mark Antony
. Wu Zetian : That woman is a hard worker and sometimes can get more snappy on her periods. Needs tea sets to help soothe her periods
. Joan of Arc : Toughening it out in battlefields with padded pants in her armors, extended laying down and doing less heavy labor when not in battlefields
. Lucrezia Borgia : Has a hunch of pillows, blankets and sweet treats around her
. Catherine the Great : As someone who spares no expense in her beauty regiment, she launched herself extended spa regiment which included hot drinks and cucumbers on her eyes
. Jackie Bouvier : Warm pads when not in public, wearing layered period panties in her periods, abstaining from cold drinks in periods. Oh and getting a number of blankets and cushions for her periods
. Clementine Hozier : Similar case with Jackie Bouvier except she may often have extended naps in her periods
. Scheherazade : Launches extended self care/spa regiments which included books and hot drinks
. Borte : Often wrapping herself in wool blankets when not in public and also drinking A LOT of hot milk drinks

Legendary Ladies: 50 Goddesses to Empower and Inspire You by Ann Shen
Tumblr media
Read time: <1 Day Rating: 3/5
The quote: Mythology is a funny thing. When you really think about it, mythology is, at the root—with due respect to that which is sacred and religious—stories that have told ourselves about our own origins. Humans have long searched for answers about how we came to be, why we came to be, and what our purpose is. We've experienced many of the same struggles, no matter the trappings of our time and place in history. Mythology reveals all this.
While my review may at times read as quite negative I enjoyed this book. It does what it sets out to do fairly well. I'm wondering if Amy Shen got a little vague on the intended audience of Legendary Ladies. It feels like somewhere it's somewhere around new adult. It's not childish even with bright and youngish illustration style. The issues the writing addresses and the style used are aimed at a slightly older audience. Also if the book was aimed at a young enough audience I would expect a map somewhere saying where these pantheons are (especially the Orisha). I do quite appreciate the introductions focus on the yin and yang nature of male and female elements, something continued through the write-ups. This is not meant to alienate enbys or others in the lgbtq community it is simply an accepted term for universal balance.
Shen has chosen goddesses from a good mix of pantheons. It does maybe lean heavily towards the basics pantheon. The goddesses are broken up into 5 broad topics. depending on their responsibilities. These are creativity and manifestation, love, power, protection and reinvention. Greek goddesses have their Roman equivalents listed in brackets, it is a logical but appreciated choice. Each goddess has a write with varying parts of their story. In some cases that is an origin story, in some, it is how they rose to prominence. I know it was impossible due to the nature of mythology/religion but I wish there had been more consistency in the length and framing content of the write-ups.
The write-ups are accompanied by a full-page illustration of the goddess and a sentence or two stating under what circumstances you would outreach to them (and where appropriate how). That is done well, some are repetitive but there is a distinction between them for the most part. The art does suit the book and the ladies therein. I think I like it because it takes them all of their comfort regions. They might be surrounded by their iconography but they look like they belong together not separately (if that makes sense). I do have some reservations about the skin tones and maybe some of the facial features. I'm not sure.
One thing I was surprised about given the female power if the not feministic intention of the book is the interpretation of the Persephone myth. Persephone is not included in this but her mother, Demeter, is. There is an interpretation growing traction that Persphone chose her life. Persephone followed Hades willingly, willingly ate the seeds that condemned her to The Underworld. It was her choice, she was not kidnapped. It would be nice to see her here. Even if you want to use the classic interpretation she is still part of the cause of the seasons and rejuvenation. Persephone is the Queen of The Underworld and the goddess of death, life, grain, and destruction.

I'm finally back from my vacation, and what a time it was! As much as I enjoy trekking through caves, scaling mountains, and embracing old cultures, home is still where the heart is.
Anyway, I want to personally thank everyone who wished me a happy birthday the day before! I know a number of you have also made some gift art, but unfortunately the terrible internet connection made it impossible to check them out on the day itself.
Rest assured, I will get around to checking out all the gift art soon. And dont worry if you didn't gift me anything, your constant support is good enough a gift for me. For real, another year has past and I'm grateful to have gotten the chance to interact and get to know some of ya'll more, even through the comments. And for that, I'm eternally grateful to have you guys as fans and friends!
That being said, Lady Ace is also extremely grateful for her success and all the support you have shown her this year! So from the both of us, thank you!
