A Nova Scotia excavation company has been fined $80,000 after a worker died when scaffolding collapsed on one of its job sites. In a decision released Wednesday, a Nova Scotia provincial court judge in Pictou, N.S., found the failure by Blaine MacLane Excavation Ltd. to ensure scaffolding was properly installed led to the 2020 death of Jeff MacDonald, a self-employed electrician. The sentence was delivered after the excavation company was earlier found guilty of an infraction under the province’s Occupational Health and Safety Act. Judge Bryna Hatt said in her decision she found the company “failed in its duty” to ensure that pins essential to the scaffolding’s stability were present at the work site.

Currently so shocked I’m finding it hard to type.

I was watching a show, you may have heard of, New Amsterdam. Season 5 was finally released on Netflix. This is how I find out that child marriage is legal in 44 US states.

Ima let that sink in for a sec. Child marriage is legal in fourty-four states in America.

Hold on.

Child marriage is legal in fourty four out of fifty states in the USA.

This statistic was when the show was made, in 2022.

This is not the 1600s. Nor 1800s. This is today. 21st century. How the fuck has it been this long to rectify? And even with the laws in place there’s room for exceptions? Tf?

As of June 2024, per Wikipedia, there are currently 37 states where child marriage is completely LEGAL.

How the absolute fuck am I only now finding out about this. Not to mention the trillion billion other things that’s fucked up in the US.

Why is this not on every news station in America? Not to mention all the other legal issues that aren’t protected. There’s not a law to protect gender equality, or in fact any equality. They overturned RVW. The president should be in jail, also. Can’t follow his own laws, and yet now he’s protected by them.

I’m not American but I am terrified for all the people out there in danger. For everyone vulnerable to these laws, and the future that might be created.

I can’t even begin to imagine how many children are affected by this right now but I’m more concerned why it’s kept so quiet. Why aren’t there protests? Riots? Why am I finding out about this through a tv show? And not the news? Internet? Anything?

I’m so disturbed right now. Please tell people. Nothing will change if no one is even aware of it.

And yes, I’m not American. But I feel like this should have global attention. I know there’s lots of countries out there with many issues like this but for america? Honestly.. I shouldn’t be surprised but I feel sick. Spread the word.

Romana's parents have new lawyers

Y'all have seen me talk about Romana before — my dear friend who's fighting her absolutely terrible parents who are trying to force her into guardianship. At this point she's spent a year and a half living on her own, but they still are trying to take that right away from her. The legal fight continues and she still needs donations to pay her lawyers and other bills.

I've previously talked about the parents' lawyers tricking a judge into signing the guardianship order without reading it, and using it to "legally" kidnap her to their house, which was back on December 22nd of 2022. Her lawyers got a stay on the 23rd, but the parents kept her there until the stay came out in writing on the 29th. Since that time, the parents have hired new lawyers. We're not clear whether this is because the old ones got in trouble for the trickery, or whether the old ones realized the case was untenable, or something else entirely.

Unfortunately this means an uptick in case activity and more billable hours for Romana's lawyers, which means we have to raise more money to cover it. So if any of you can spare some cash, or at least signal boost, it would be really really appreciated. Romana is a sweetheart who just wants to put all this behind her. She's relentlessly supportive and caring to her friends and loved ones, even while she's dealing with all this madness. Romana deserves better than this. Can you help her fight for it?
