A Really Obnoxious Standard German Spelling Reform
Rules:
Abolish the umlauts. ä becomes e, ü becomes y. A distinct graph is kept for ö, but we replace it with ø, to conform to the IPA.
ß is abolished entirely; for its replacement, see s.
ie becomes i when it represents a monophthong.
Diphthongs are rewritten to reflect their actual values: ei becomes ai; äu and eu become oi.
H as a long vowel marker is abolished. Vowels are instead doubled when they are long (as they are already in certain words)
Double consonants to indicate a short vowel are abolished.
The trigraph sch becomes š. The tetragraph tsch becomes č. The affricate /ts/ becomes c. The tetragraph dsch becomes ǰ. The digraph ch becomes either ç (in the case of ich-laut) or x.
S remains where it represents the actual sound /s/. Where it represents /z/, it is replaced with z. As an alveolar fricative, it becomes š.
V is entirely replaced with f. W is entirely replaced with v, except in placenames where it acts as a final vowel lengthener--then it is dropped.
Final devoicing is reflected in the spelling of words.
Non-rhotic pronunciations are reflected in spelling.
The obsolete digraph th is abolished.
Capitalization of nouns is abolished.

Bananas, it turns out, are not what we thought they were.
Sure, most, when ripe, are yellow and sweet and delicious slathered in peanut butter. But a global survey reveals many more appealing counterparts than the generic banana found in American supermarkets, with edible varieties that can be red or blue, squat or bulbous, seeded or seedless.
And the banana family tree as a whole is even more diverse, and mysterious, than previously thought, according to a study published earlier this month in the journal Frontiers in Plant Science.
“The diversity of bananas is not as well described, as well documented, as we thought,” said Julie Sardos, a botanist at the Bioversity International research group, and an author of the study. “It was really overlooked by past researchers.”
She and her colleagues analyzed genetic material from hundreds of different bananas and found that there were at least three wild banana ancestors not yet discovered by botanists. Like the revelation of a long-lost relative, knowing that these missing wild ancestors are out there could change the way we see bananas and provide potential ways to strengthen the crops against disease.
Wild bananas, or Musa acuminata, have flesh packed with seeds that render the fruit almost inedible. Scientists think bananas were domesticated more than 7,000 years ago on the island of New Guinea. Humans on the island at the time bred the plants to produce fruit without being fertilized and to be seedless. They were able to develop pretty tasty bananas without formal knowledge of the principles of inheritance and evolution.
Tumblr media
As trading routes and linguistic connections spread, so did the new banana. It picked up genetic complexity as farmers crossbred it with other wild banana species in regions that became Indonesia, Malaysia and India.
Today, it is possible to use genetic markers to trace these bananas back to their ancestors by simulating breeding patterns in a computer program. This procedure can reveal what kind of trading routes and agricultural practices were established in different communities. And, Dr. Sardos said, “Understanding how banana fruits full of big hard seeds transformed into seedless fleshy edible fruits is an exciting mystery to investigate.”
But when Dr. Sardos and her colleagues ran this analysis on a collection of domesticated bananas, they found that there were three ancestors that they couldn’t account for. One seemed to have a strong genetic imprint on bananas in Southeast Asia. Another was localized around the island of Borneo. The third seemed to be from New Guinea. But, other than leaving their genetic mark in certain geographic clusters of domesticated banana plants, these wild ancestors remained completely mysterious to the scientists.
“Their data is suggesting that there was some domestication in parts of the South Pacific which had not previously been considered,” said James Leebens-Mack, a plant biologist at the University of Georgia who was not involved in the new study. “That’s really cool.”
The discovery of these mystery ancestors is also practical. Seedless, automatically fruit-bearing bananas are sterile, which makes the modern breeding of different bananas incredibly complex, according to Dr. Sardos. “You have to go back to wild bananas,” she said, and figure out how to make fertile plants similar to the edible bananas. Then, you have to breed those plants with others to create a new, edible, sterile banana.
Tumblr media
The difficulty of breeding new bananas has led most plantations around the world, primarily in Africa and Central America, to only grow one type: the Cavendish, which is the most widely consumed variety in the world. That’s risky, though, because the low genetic diversity of banana crops makes them susceptible to disease outbreaks.
“You hear it all the time,” Dr. Leebens-Mack said. “At some point, there’s going to be a banana famine, a disease run rampant among plantations.”
Breeders will need to go back to wild bananas to diversify banana genetics and make crops more resilient. They can look at different wild traits and decide which ones may be best for preventing disease, fungal outbreaks or even adaptation to climate extremes. “Maybe the solution is we don’t just stick with our typical banana, we take advantage of these other cultivated lines,” said Pamela Soltis, a botanist at the Florida Museum of Natural History who was not involved in the study.
To do this, though, the banana family tree must be clearer. Dr. Sardos hopes that the discovery of mysterious banana ancestors might spur scientists to do more digging into the crop’s genetic history.
“What we expect, even if it’s not really precise, is to add some weight to the plea for more expeditions for the collection of bananas,” she said.
Mathieu Rouard, another author of the study and a colleague of Dr. Sardos’s at Bioversity International who has been studying bananas for nearly 20 years, added, “My friends and family, they are always amazed I’m still working on bananas. But there are still lots of things to discover, even after all this time.”
The great banana search is on.

It’s here! The PS Audio DirectStream Junior DAC
Tumblr media
The PS Audio PerfectWave DirectStream Junior (DSJ for short) has landed! I’m super excited to put it through its paces the next several weeks.
PS Audio made quite a splash after it introduced the DSJ’s big brother, the DirectStream (MSRP $5995), back in 2014. I got a chance to listen to the DirectStream last year @ AudioVision SF, and was impressed with how smooth, colorful and grain-free it sounded. If anything, it sounded just a tad too smooth to me, erring on the side of glossing over textures and taking the edge off transients. That said, I think I was listening to that one running PS Audio’s “Torreys” firmware at the time. The beauty of the DirectStream is that you can get firmware updates that completely change how the digital processing and D/A conversion is performed (and thus how it sounds). And earlier this year, an extensive update (called ”Huron”) was released that promises significant improvements.
The Junior version of the DirectStream (MSRP $3999) is built around the same FPGA-based reprogrammable architecture of its big brother, but with a few cost-saving measures, including a simpler chassis, single-PCB layout, the omission of analog output transformers and a smaller power supply. As a bonus though, PS Audio’s Roon-ready Bridge II network card, a $899 option on the DirectStream, is included in the price. The Bridge is an absolute necessity IMO to unleash the unit’s full capabilities, so it’s more like a $2900 price savings vs. the DirectStream. Also keep in mind that PS Audio has a pretty cool trade-in program, with an allowance up to $1200 on the DSJ. 4000 clams certainly isn’t cheap, but factoring trade-in, the DSJ’s extensive capabilities and its upgradability, it’s quite reasonably priced.
Why I’m excited.
I’ve been wanting to get my hands on the DSJ for a number of reasons:
Roon Ready. Roon has literally changed my life and having it integrated into the DAC is yet another step towards simplifying the rig.
Attractive design. It’s quite svelte and more spousal-acceptance-friendly than the majority of high-end gear out there.
Support for both hi-res PCM and DSD.
Good value. See above.
The question is, does it sound good enough to dethrone my Monarchy NM24 tube DAC as a new reference?
Tumblr media
First impressions... resolution, resolution, resolution.
Word on the street is that DirectStreams can take upwards of 500 hours to break in fully and sound their best. Based on my first 100 hours with the unit, this sounds about right. There are definitely some rough spots out of the box, including some brightness and a general “tightness” typical of digital gear that isn’t burned in.
So I’ll wait a while before fully evaluating... but one thing is pretty darn clear already. This thing is a resolution beast.
Virtually all DACs now have “hi-res” format support, but the DSJ is the first I’ve used in my home that sounds truly capable of not only resolving all the extra data in those files, but extracting even more information from conventional 16/44 digital. I’m already hearing this in a few different ways:
Different recordings and formats sound, well, more different. 16/44 and 24/192 tracks of the same recording have a bigger gap in fidelity, with 16/44 sounding quite a bit rougher than hi-res. With previous DACs, the hi-res versions always sounded better, but not by that much. Also, old analog recordings, e.g. RCA Living Stereo, convey the distinctively analog character of the original equipment, compared to modern DDD tracks that sound cleaner but more sterile.
Percussion instruments never sounded so realistic. Triangles float eerily in the air as they do in live concert, and seem to ring on and on forever; cymbals sound full and focused instead of splashy; and celesta are rich with the instrument’s delicate harmonics.
There’s a lot more locational information on the stage. I can hear the spaces around and between instruments with far greater clarity, and more easily make out the relative position of all the instruments in a wind section. e.g. clarinet vs. flute vs. oboe vs. english horn.
The distinctive timbre of different string instruments is easier to distinguish. E.g. when a cello and viola play in the same register, the resonance of the former vs. the woodiness of the latter is crystal clear.
Based on these initial observations, and reading some other recent impressions describing the Huron firmware’s sound as more detailed and fundamentally accurate (e.g. Positive Feedback or DAR), I’m feeling pretty good that my previous reservations about the DirectStream sounding overly euphonic and rounded have been largely addressed.
I currently have the DSJ breaking in playing a combination of burn-in tracks, music and test-tones while hooked up to a 1k ohm dummy load; I’ll report back with more impressions as things settle down. Stay tuned!
My thanks to Bill Leebens and Paul McGowan @ PS Audio for providing the DSJ for review. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out Paul’s blog, Paul’s Posts.

the sims modding community is funny because they'll slave away digitally sculpting characters with a terabyte of ultra HD band shirts and makeup and slacks and make what is almost a photo realistic supermodel that gives you the vapors but in the end they're still going to eat a bowl of stale macaroni and say "Ooo! Ubiki flärgen dufe! Zooboo leeben fark." and die from sitting in a recliner too hard.
