A Florida Legacy: Sam and Robbie Vickers’ transformational gift to the Harn Museum of Art
Here is the video on The Florida Art Collection, an extensive collection of Florida-themed paintings, drawings, and watercolors that includes many prominent American artists from the late 19th to the mid-20th centuries including paintings by such celebrated artists as Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent gifted by Samuel and Roberta Vickers as the collection transitions from their North Florida home to the Harn Museum of Art.
Shoutout to everyone who assisted me and my team in helping tell the story behind this collection.

She/Her/Hers Exhibition Examines Roles of Women in Chinese Art
She/Her/Hers Exhibition Examines Roles of Women in Chinese Art
The Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida is exploring the intersecting roles of women in the arts of premodern, modern and contemporary China in a new exhibition titled She/Her/Hers: Women in the Arts of China. More than 50 works of painting, calligraphy, embroidery, photography, ceramic, bronze, jade, lacquer and silver, spanning the 7th century to the present, will showcase work by women, women as pictorial subjects, and women as consumers of art. The exhibition will be on view from March 1, 2022 to March 24, 2024.To get more news about ancient china women, you can visit shine news official website.
Throughout time, women in China have engaged with the art world in diverse and inspirational ways,” said Dr. Tongyun Yin, Cofrin Curator of Asian Art. “However, for centuries in Chinese visual arts, women were often represented either as the object of desire for the male gaze or as exemplary models of female virtues such as subordination, obedience and chastity. Their creative work, if not entirely consigned to obscurity in the dominant art historical narrative, was disparaged as inferior to that of their male contemporaries.”
The goal of the exhibition is twofold, firstly to forge nuanced narratives about the overlooked field of women’s engagement with art in China; and secondly to create a platform to continue and deepen the conversation about women and the arts through recognizing the roles of different cultures and periods in shaping women’s contributions to art. An interactive activity within the exhibition invites visitors to share what they feel, think and hope will create a dynamic space to raise questions, challenge perspectives and foster discussions. During the two-year run of the exhibition, several six-month rotations will ensure that visitors will encounter new voices and perspectives on each return visit.
“This is the first exhibition since 2007 to showcase both the breadth and depth of the Harn’s Chinese art collection with many of the works rarely seen before,” said Dr. Lee Anne Chesterfield, Harn Museum Director. “She/Her/Hers: Women in the Arts of China will uncover women’s intellectual and artistic presence in the arts, give them the long-overdue recognition they deserve and celebrate their achievements now and for the future.”
She/Her/Hers: Women in the Arts of China is the first exhibition organized by Dr. Yin since being appointed Cofrin Curator of Asian Art on March 1, 2021. Instead of a sweeping survey on women and the arts throughout Chinese history, Dr. Yin approaches this broad theme from four angles. “Representing Femininity” reveals female identities within Chinese social, religious and cultural discourses. “Anonymous Beauties” demonstrates how traditional representations of women in Chinese art were primarily founded upon widely accepted stereotypes held by society in general and male painters in particular. “Female Agency” explores women’s art practices as shown in painting, calligraphy and the premier feminine art: embroidery. “Beyond Boudoir” focuses on the tremendous social and political transformation in the 20th century awakening female consciousness and opening up new territories for Chinese women and their artistic activities.

The Ledge #565: Some More Home Plays
This week is another show devoted primarily to music I've been listening to around the house. The first half is dominated by new tracks recently sent to me by various labels, and sometimes the artists themselves. There's a new tune from Sioux Falls' own Thought Patrol. There's Big Stir's latest projects featuring former Standells leader Tony Valentino. There's the usual handful of Rum Bar Records releases, including the return of The Short Fuses.
The second half of the show are highlighted by recent box set releases of The Velvet Underground, Dead Moon, and the legendary live 2Tone Dance Craze soundtrack, along with favorites by the New York Dolls, The Mummies, The Creation, The Pretty Things, and Paul Revere & The Raiders. There's almost 60 years of fabulous rock and roll!
As for this week's edition of "52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks", I don't have a lot of background information regarding the version by a band called Funeral Service. All I've managed to find out is that they were a French band that put their cover out in 1986 as the b-side to a version of the classic "Pills". If you have any info on this band, please let me know.
And please, please, please pass the word on that I'm still looking for brand new covers of The Undertones classic tune. If you have the capability to record your own version, or know some great musician friends, get on it and send the recording to paulisded @ gmail dot com.

READ MAXWELL’S FULL ESSAY:
Gram·pun·cle [geram-puhn-cuul] n. A gay man who formerly dated your grandmother only to later come to terms with his sexuality but still stay in the family to take care of your mother and aunt growing up.
Alan Palmer was my Grampuncle. When my cousins and I were younger, we couldn’t figure out what to call him. He was our grandpa in terms of age and raising our mothers, but he functioned more as the classic “fun gay uncle”, so we settled on a combination, Grampuncle. While we all had amazing relationships with Alan, mine was special. I have known Alan and his husband, Bill, since birth (making them the first ever gay couple I knew in my life).
Growing up and struggling with my sexuality, I was always able to look up to them to show me that true love really does have no boundaries. I will never forget, in 2015, standing inside the Michigan courthouse beside Alan as he and Bill exchanged vows and got married. They showed me, a young, insecure gay boy, that there was a place for me in the world and that I had a future to look forward to filled with love and joy.
Along with that joy, there eventually came some pain. Alan was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in the early spring of 2020. A week or so after the diagnosis, the world fell into a global pandemic. Those first few months were intense. I heard the horror stories from Alan of how scary it was going into the hospital for rounds of chemotherapy with people who had the Coronavirus sitting in the next wing over. Being constantly in and out of the hospital he was a risk to others, and the lung cancer made almost everyone else a risk to him. With the exception of his husband, he was fully alone.
Alan did not admit to his loneliness and pain. He did not want to feel like a burden, but after talking with Bill and hearing how Alan was truly feeling, my family began to make the hour and a half drive from Chicago to Michigan almost every other week to visit. We brought Alan a pop-up gazebo and some fancy sun hats to protect him (with the radiation he could not be in the sun for more than a few minutes at a time), and we would sit in the backyard just talking and laughing for hours until Alan’s body would give in to the exhaustion and he had to go inside.
As his birthday approached, I racked my brain thinking of something special to do for him. I thought back to a video I saw online toward the beginning of the pandemic and decided to make a “hug shield”. What better gift to give than a loved one’s embrace during the pandemic? Using a clear painter’s tarp, I cut arm holes and taped together closed arm sleeves. It took a good few hours, but I finally figured out a design that allowed for full protection on either side of the hug. On the day of his birthday, we packed up the car and headed to Michigan.
After talking and eating cake, it was time for the surprise. As we pulled the shield out and hung it from the gazebo, Alan did something I had only seen at the courthouse; he cried. I had the honor of the first hug, and as I slipped my arms into the sleeves Alan and I held each other and cried together. He pressed his forehead against mine through the plastic and in between sobs he said to me, “I am so proud of you.” I knew this was our final goodbye. When Alan died the next week, I knew he went in peace. He had felt my embrace through the shield of love.

LGBT Friendly Churches updated 29/10/17
This blog is to try and help answer any questions youth or anyone might have regarding helping Christian or non-Christians gays. If you are LGBT+, parent, sibling or friend of someone who is LGBT+ and you want to know how to support them, then this is the place for you. It is also a blog to locate gay friendly churches where the LGBT Community can find a place to worship freely in Christ without hindrance due to their sexual identity. Although primarily in the UK, I will also add churches elsewhere to the list if you add their details. Please give any website addresses so I can link to the church website. Depending on how many churches are added, I will at least monthly edit the posts into one big post so they are in one place.
Please reblog, so as many people as possible can find a place to worship free of condemnation.

FOM BLOG: FAVERSHAM TOWN 0 - 2 GILLINGHAM
My Thoughts On Faversham Town V Gillingham……………
I left My House at 16.20PM, and I made sure that I had the following things on me, (Money, Keys, My Sony Xperia XA1, Plug Charger, My Gillingham Jacket, Spare Lids, My Gillingham Bag, Match-Day Programmes, Packet Of Polo’s, and Pad and Pens) - And I double checked that I had everything on me before I made the fifteen / twenty minute walk from my house to Rainham Train Station and I arrive at Rainham Train Station at 16.35PM, I then queued up at the ticket booth to buy my return ticket to Faversham for £7.40, and once I got my change and tickets, I went through the ticket barrier before buying A Can of Coca Cola for 79P from the newsagents.
I got on the train at 16.45PM which was going to terminate at Faversham and I let Stephen know that I was on the train heading for Faversham, and while I was on there train, I sent the following status updates on Facebook and Twitter, On my way to Salters Lane as Gillingham take on Faversham Town in a pre-season friendly, Hopefully, Gillingham put in a decent performance and win against Faversham Town, while at the same-time, Gillingham can come through tonight’s match without picking up any injuries - COME ON THE GILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!
I also tweeted the following, Also, If anyone is going to Bromley V Gillingham Tonight, Then any feedback you can send me regarding Gillingham’s Performance against Bromley would be greatly appreciated, Because Gillingham are playing against Bromley on the same night as Faversham Town V Gillingham, While I was on the train, Gillingham confirmed that they are playing a pre-season friendly away against Colchester United at The Weston Holmes Community Stadium On Saturday The 28th Of July, Now, Colchester United is one of those grounds you need to travel to via coach or via car, It is not the easiest of football stadiums to travel to via public transport, and I think I will be going to Thameshead Town V Gillingham Instead, It’s more local and I can see more Gillingham Supporters opting to go to that game instead.
I then arrived in Faversham at just gone 5PM, And I caught up with Stephen in Weatherspoons and I had A Coke while Stephen got a beer, and I mentioned to Stephen that I found out on Saturday that Diane and Ann could not make it to Faversham Town On Tuesday Night, because I was still in two minds regarding if I was traveling via car or via train to Faversham, But once I found out that Diane and Ann both unfortunately could not make it to Salters Lane, That’s when I knew 100% I was traveling to Faversham Town Via Train.
Barry Fuller, Dean Parrett, Callum Reilly, Josh Rees, Brandon Hanlan and Regan Charles-Cook are Gillingham’s Six Signings to date so far, But there not Gillingham’s Best Signings, Often as supporters we focus our attentions on the players Gillingham Football Club sign over the summer, but it’s who we have kept hold off who I believe are Gillingham’s best signings, Gabriel Zakuani and Mark Byrne are the two players who were instrumental to Gillingham’s success last season, and keeping hold of those two are massive massive signing for Gillingham, especially as Lee Martin had moved on in the summer.
After we had finished our drinks, we made the five minute walk to Salters Lane, and once we arrived inside the ground, no programmes were on sale at the moment, and I will look to buy something to eat and drink from the bar down the main stand side of the pitch, looking around Salters Lane, the turnout isn’t fantastic at the moment, and that could be down to a number of contributing factors, the main one being Belgium V France In The World Cup Semi Final, Gillingham are also playing against Bromley at Hayes Lane, and finally, A 7PM Kick Off Time On A Tuesday Night makes arriving in time for kick off very difficult.
I got speaking with Julian briefly and Julian is still waiting for the team news to be announced, early sign’s suggest that this will be a similar squad that played against Sheppey United On Saturday, I mentioned to Stephen that Salters Lane was packed for Gillingham’s First Pre-Season Friendly when Gillingham won 1-0 a year ago, the attendance that day was 1,214, and all the drink was sold out at half time, the match-day programmes were sold very quickly that evening and playing on A Friday Night helped with the attendance as well, and Gillingham were praised for sending the first team to Faversham Town, and bringing a large support with them to Salters Lane.
I then went to the food and drink hut to buy A Bacon Cheese-Burger And A Can Of Coca Cola for £5.50 and Stephen went round to the programme seller to buy our match-day programmes as the programmes had just arrived, after finishing My Burger, Stephen came back with the programmes and I gave Stephen The £2 I owed him.
Eventually, Gillingham’s Team News Was Announced On Twitter, And Gillingham Lined Up As Follows,,,,, Trialist (GK), Miquel Scarlett, Ryan Huckle, Jack Tucker, Billy Bingham, Ben Chapman, Franck Moussa, Darren Oldaker, Dean Cox, Henry Woods and Bradley Stevenson SUBS: Louie Catherall (GK), George Sherinant, Jude Arthurs, Ben Allan, Charles Noyelle, Jack Morrell, Roman Campbell, TJ Bramble, Trialist, Leroy Hlabi and Noel Mbo - I think it is very surprising that Gillingham have gone with no recognised striker up-front in The First Half and Bradley Stevenson and Henry Woods are leading the line, mind you, Henry Woods did score a hat-trick against Sheppey United at the weekend.
Me and Stephen then spoke with Luke, and Luke looked at a few of the player names on the back of the match-day programme just to confirm who was in The Faversham Town’s Squad, and we got speaking about just how many Former Gillingham Players and Manager’s are in The Conference National for the up and coming season, Martin Allen (Chesterfield), Andy Hessenthaler (Eastleigh), Justin Edinburgh (Leyton Orient), Neil Smith (Bromley) and Peter Taylor (Dagenham & Redbridge), and it was Peter Taylor who we spoke about for the most part, Someone who is happy to take on a managerial role regardless of the level the club is playing at, and for Gillingham, Peter Taylor was out-standing as Director Of Football and he has plenty of contacts to get players to sign on the dotted line, and in his second spell as Manager, the likes of John Egan and Luke Norris were brought in under his tenure as Gillingham Manager and both were sold on for lucrative transfer fee’s, Dagenham & Redbridge are in a tough spot financially, so if Peter Taylor can do the same-thing for Dagenham & Redbridge and sell players on for a profit, then they might be able to cope financially with some of there debt problems.
It was so packed at Salters Lane for our previous friendly, that Peter Taylor stood on the roof of the newly built changing rooms, While I mentioned to Luke that I didn’t go to Deal Town On Monday Night - A Match that ended 2-2 - Deal Town isn’t the easiest of friendlies to travel to and your talking two hours on the train and then you have got to get to Deal Town’s Stadium which isn’t within walking distance of the train station.
We also got speaking about the system that Gillingham are going to play and I cannot look past the diamond midfield formation, None of the midfielders in Josh Rees, Regan Charles-Cook, Dean Parrett and Callum Reilly can be considered as wingers who stay wide, take someone on and whip in a cross, perhaps Regan Charles-Cook can do this, I am not sure because I have not seen him play, But looking at these youngsters, If your A Pacey Winger, then the way Gillingham are playing at the moment, either your retrained as a striker, or retrained as a full back, and The Youth Team need to play the same formations as the first team, otherwise, you will have players coming up through the age groups who cannot get into the first team because they play in a position that doesn’t suit the way that Gillingham’s First Team want to play.
Luke then told us that The Goalkeeper In Goal For Gillingham is on trial, and we have no idea on the identity of the goalkeeper and there is a trialist on the bench as well, as well as Franck Moussa and Dean Cox, who could both put themselves in contention to earn themselves a contract at Gillingham Football Club with a decent performance against Faversham Town, Steve Lovell must be looking to strengthen the midfield, because Franck Moussa and Dean Cox played for Gillingham against Sheppey United, and both midfielders are in The Starting Line Up For The Match Against Faversham Town.
Both teams the came out on to the pitch and lined up on the halfway line, looking around Salters Lane, the attendance is going to be a low turnout and that is disappointing, but understandable at the same-time, and with Gillingham kicking towards the covered terrace in the first half, Stephen and Myself stood down the main stand side of the pitch in line with Faversham Town’s Penalty Area, and we can then switch ends at half time, that’s one of the advantages of pre-season friendlies, you can move around the ground and situated yourself at the end of the pitch where Gillingham are attacking, thankfully, The Referee didn’t switch ends, because that would have been very irritating to say the least.
FIRST HALF:
And the first noteworthy moment of the match came from Faversham Town, who look to kick the ball long from back to front, But Faversham Town’s Long Ball was too long and Gillingham’s Trialist Goalkeeper is able to gather the ball close to his eighteen years line, we have no idea on the identity of who this trialist goalkeeper is, But the one thing I did hear at Salters Lane is that this goalkeeper is from Eastern Europe, So we will have to pay attention to any other pre-season friendlies in the future to see if this Goalkeeper is named in Match-Day Squads for Gillingham over the coming weeks.
Gillingham then look to pick out Bradley Stevenson with two attacking opportunities in quick succession, The first of these two goal-scoring opportunities see’s some nice build up play with Billy Bingham passing the ball forward to Franck Moussa, who lays the ball off to Darren Oldaker, and Darren Oldaker takes a touch to control the ball before passing the ball out-wide to Ben Chapman, who takes a touch to control the ball before clipping the ball over the top of Faversham Town’s Defence towards Bradley Stevenson, And Simon Overland in The Faversham Town Goal just about manages to get to the loose ball first, and from here, Simon Overland kicks the ball long down-field and Ryan Huckle wins the initial aerial challenge, and the second ball falls kindly to Billy Bingham, who passes the ball forward to Franck Moussa, and Franck Moussa passes the ball back to Billy Bingham, who takes a touch to control the ball before looking to pick Bradley Stevenson out with a threaded through-ball which is cut out by Faversham Town’s Centre Back.
Gillingham’s Five Man Midfield and two up-front in Henry Woods and Bradley Stevenson are causing Faversham Town all sorts of problems, Billy Bingham is playing in The Central Defensive Midfielder Role, And Franck Moussa and Darren Oldaker are both playing further forward with Ben Chapman on the right wing, and Dean Cox on the left wing, This five man midfield is out-numbering Faversham Town in the middle of the park, and Faversham Town’s Two Centre Back’s have to watch out for Bradley Stevenson and Henry Woods, both of whom, scored four of Gillingham’s Seven Goals Against Sheppey United in our previous pre-season friendly.
And Four Minutes Into The Match, And Gillingham are awarded a penalty kick, Gillingham are retaining possession of the ball with Franck Moussa, Darren Oldaker and Dean Cox all getting a few touches on the ball, and Dean Cox passes the ball inside centrally to Bradley Stevenson on the edge of Faversham Town’s Penalty Area, and Bradley Stevenson picks out Franck Moussa, who had made an over-lapping run, and once Franck Moussa was tripped inside Faversham Town’s Penalty Area, Referee Scott Rudd pointed to the penalty spot straight away and up stepped Franck Moussa to show great composure from the penalty spot to give Gillingham the lead by sending Simon Overland the wrong way from twelve yards, and Gillingham had opened the scoring early on in this match.
After the goal, Faversham Town are penalised for there challenge on Jack Tucker, and Gillingham are awarded a free kick in there own final third, and from the resulting free kick, Ryan Huckle passes the ball forwards to Billy Bingham on the halfway line, who lays the ball off to Franck Moussa, and Franck Moussa takes a touch to control the ball before attempting to pick out Bradley Stevenson with a long ball over the top over the left side of Faversham Town’s Defence, But Franck Moussa’s long pass is too long and runs all the way through to Simon Overland who gathers the ball with ease.
But Gillingham continue to ask questions of Faversham Town defensively, Gillingham’s Five Man Midfield - which sometimes became a six man midfield when one of Bradley Stevenson and henry Woods dropped further back - are outnumbering Faversham Town, and Ben Chapman plays a neat one / two with Darren Oldaker, and Ben Chapman is in and behind Faversham Town’s Back Four, and Ben Chapman initially delays his cross before whipping in an dangerous in-swinging cross towards Bradley Stevenson at the far post which is headed partially clear and away from danger, and Dean Cox manages to keep the ball in play, play the ball back to Henry Woods, who takes a touch to control the ball before looking to go for goal with an effort on goal from the edge of Faversham Town’s Penalty Area, But Henry Woods drops the ball back to Dean Cox, who whips in an dangerous cross / shot which Simon Overland could only parry back into the danger-zone and Faversham Town desperately were able to clear there defensive lines - But only just.
But despite Gillingham’s Early dominance in play, Faversham Town do catch Gillingham out with a lack of defensive concentration and it takes a desperate clearance from Gillingham’s Trialist Goalkeeper on the edge of our penalty area to prevent Faversham Town from scoring the equaliser - that would be disappointing to see Faversham Town equalise from poor concentration at the back, and Gillingham have been causing Faversham Town problems defensively all game.
But this goal-scoring opportunity for Faversham Town wasn’t something that the hosts could build on, because Gillingham are asking questions of The Ryman Division One South Side, because Dean Cox picks out Henry Woods with a fantastic pass over the top, But The Linesman in-front of us had his flag raised for offside, I am seeing more from Dean Cox in this match against Faversham Town, then what I saw from Dean Cox against Sheppey United On Saturday, Because Dean Cox only got a few touches on the ball on Saturday, where as against Faversham Town, Dean Cox is getting much more of the ball.
Faversham Town are penalised for a heft challenge on Bradley Stevenson, and from the resulting free kick, Gillingham do not opt to hurl the ball into Faversham Town’s Penalty Area, instead deciding to play intricate passes to retain possession of the ball, and when Henry Woods passes the ball out-wide to Dean Cox on the left wing close to the technical area, Dean Cix tries to pick out Ben Chapman with a cross-field pass which is over-hit and goes out of play for A Faversham Town Throw On In Faversham Town’s Final Third.
And it is from this throw on where Gillingham have the opportunity to double there lead, Faversham Town throw the ball short and look to clear the ball long down the line, But Ben Chapman has charged down the clearance, and the ball falls kindly into Darren Oldaker’s path, who passes the ball forward to Bradley Stevenson, and Bradley Stevenson picks out Billy Bingham on the edge of Faversham Town’s Penalty Area, down the left side, and Billy Bingham has tried to pick out the top left corner of the net with a curling effort which only just about goes wide of the far post and Simon Overland was scrambling across his goal-line to try and get to that curling effort from Billy Bingham.
And in the next attacking opportunity, It’s Gillingham who are still pushing for the second goal to double our lead, Franck Moussa runs forward in possession of the ball for Gillingham, and he passes the ball forward to Bradley Stevenson just as he was about to be clattered, and Bradley Stevenson takes a touch to control the ball before laying the ball off to Darren Oldaker, and Darren Oldaker tries to pick out Henry Woods with an threaded through-ball which is cut out and intercepted, but the second ball falls kindly to Dean Cox, who plays the ball back to Billy Bingham, and Billy Bingham takes a touch to control the ball before passing the ball through to Darren Oldaker, who passes the ball out-wide to Dean Cox down the left side of the pitch, and Dean Cox has managed to pick out Henry Woods with a cross-field pass down the right side of the pitch - Faversham Town’s Left - And Henry Woods takes a touch to control the ball before attempting an ambitious and audacious effort on goal which is blocked and Faversham Town manage to clear there lines - But from what we have seen from Gillingham so far, we can only see Gillingham doubling there lead before the half time interval.
But despite Gillingham’s Dominance, Faversham Town are starting to ask questions of Gillingham Defensively, Gillingham’s Trialist Goalkeeper manages to deal with an dangerous in-swinging cross comfortably, however, From another cross, and Ashley Miller see’s his header towards goal turned around the post in an unconvincing fashion when Ashley Miller’s header should have been routinely saved, and Faversham Town have been awarded a very cheap corner kick, thankfully, Faversham Town do not create a meaningful goal-scoring opportunity from the resulting corner, But this is one area of Gillingham’s Game which is exploitable, because Miquel Scarlett, Jack Tucker and Ryan Huckle are all young defenders who are learning there trade, all three are talented defenders and are highly rated at Gillingham, but these three are young players playing against experienced Faversham Town Players who are playing Ryman Division One South Football on a week in, week out basis.
While Faversham Town have been on the front-foot, It’s Gillingham who continue to press for that all important second goal, Miuqel Scarlett see’s his dangerous in-swinging cross towards the far post go out of play for A Faversham Town Goal-Kick, And In A Separate Attacking Opportunity, Dean Cox has managed to play the ball through to Darren Oldaker, and although Darren Oldaker goes to ground inside Faversham Town’s Penalty Area, I don’t think there was enough contact for Gillingham to be awarded a second penalty kick in this match and Darren Oldaker more then likely lost his footing at the crucial moment.
And Gillingham continue to cause Faversham Town problems defensively, Franck Moussa, Darren Oldaker and Bradley Stevenson all link up nicely with a few touches on the ball, and Darren Oldaker clips the ball over the top for Ben Chapman to run on to, and Ben Chapman shrugs off one challenge before whipping in an dangerous in-swinging cross which is routinely saved by Simon Overland.
And in a separate attack, Gillingham continue to ask questions of Faversham Town’s defence, and this time, it is a cross from Dean Cox down the opposite side of the pitch which is floated towards Henry Woods at the back-stick, However, Dean Cox’s cross is over-hit and runs out of play for A Faversham Town Goal-Kick, and finally, Dean Cox whips in another in-swinging cross, this time much lower and towards Henry Woods feat, but this cross from Dean Cox is intercepted and cleared away from danger and Faversham Town were looking to counter down the left side of the pitch, But Miquel Scarlett has timed his challenge to perfection, and The Young Gillingham Defender was very committed with his challenge as well.
Gillingham have a half chance to try and score that all important second goal, with Darren Oldaker trying to pick out Henry Woods with a long ball over the top which unfortunately runs out of play for A Faversham Town Goal-Kick, And the next noteworthy moment of the match, was a goal-scoring opportunity for Faversham Town, Again, Faversham Town opting to go for a more direct approach see’s Ryan Huckle win the initial aerial challenge, but the second ball falls kindly to Ashley Miller, who takes one touch to control the ball, and another to hit a snap-shot effort which flashes wide of Gillingham’s Right Hand Post - And Faversham Town were so close to levelling the match up at 1-1.
And from here, Gillingham create a decent goal-scoring opportunity, Gillingham’s Trialist Goalkeeper passes the resulting goal-kick short to Ryan Huckle, who takes a touch to control the ball before passing the ball out-wide to Jack Tucker, who takes a touch to control the ball before passing the ball forward to Dean Cox, who runs from the left flank in possession of the ball into an more central position on the pitch and playing the ball through to Henry Woods on the edge of Faversham Town’s Penalty Area, and Henry Woods tee’s up Bradley Stevenson, who takes a few touches to control the ball before seeing his shot on target and deflected and then saved by Simon Overland, without the deflection - which took all the power out of the shot - then maybe Simon Overland would have more difficulty in making the save.
In a different attacking move, Darren Oldaker manages to pick out Bradley Stevenson with a long ball over the top, But The Gillingham Attacking Midfielder is flagged for offside, But Faversham Town are just starting to give Gillingham something to think about defensively, because Billy Bingham has to get the ball clear and away from danger with a long clearance down-field, and then Faversham Town had there best goal-scoring opportunity of the match to date so far, because Luke Harvey was clean through on goal for the hosts and Gillingham’s Trialists Goalkeeper had to make a brilliant one on one save to preserve Gillingham’s Slender 1-0 advantage and Me and Stephen thought that Faversham Town had scored the equaliser with that goal-scoring opportunity.
And having almost equalised, It’s Gillingham who could have doubled there lead with the next goal-scoring opportunity, Darren Oldaker passes the ball out-wide to Dean Cox, who plays a one / two with Henry Woods, and Dean Cox curls in an dangerous in-swinging cross and although Faversham Town have won the initial aerial challenge, the second ball falls kindly to Ben Chapman, who cuts inside into an more central position and goes for goal with his unfavoured left foot, and Ben Chapman’s effort on goal is routinely saved by Simon Overland.
And Simon Overland is forced into action yet again, Franck Moussa has possession of the ball for Gillingham, and Franck Moussa plays a neat one / two with Henry Woods, and from the left side of Faversham Town’s Penalty Area, Franck Moussa see’s his driven effort towards goal saved by Simon Overland who is able to gather the ball at the second attempt - It was a very narrow angle, so the chances of scoring were slim, But you could not blame Franck Moussa for opting to go for goal.
And in the next attacking move, Gillingham managed to win themselves a corner kick, just before that, Faversham Town had tried to catch Gillingham out with an early cross, But our trialists goalkeeper managed to make a routine save, and it is from here, where Gillingham created a decent goal-scoring opportunity, Miquel Scarlett had possession of the ball for Gillingham, And The Right Centre Back was allowed to travel forward up towards the halfway line before passing the ball out-wide to Ben Chapman, and Ben Chapman passed the ball inside to Darren Oldaker, who takes a touch to control the ball before passing the ball forwards to Henry Woods, who flicks the ball around the corner for Franck Moussa to run on to in Faversham Town’s Final Third, and Franck Moussa does brilliantly to win a corner kick for Gillingham - And From The Resulting Corner Kick, Darren Oldaker’s dangerous in-swinging cross is headed clear towards the edge of Faversham Town’s Penalty Area, Billy Bingham gets to the loose ball first and passes the ball out-wide to Ben Chapman, who takes a touch to control the ball before whipping in an dangerous in-swinging cross, and again, Faversham Town managed to clear the ball towards the edge of there penalty area and Gillingham are penalised for a foul, and any possibility of creating a goal-scoring opportunity from the second ball had gone.
But despite Gillingham showing levels of dominance, It’s Faversham Town who came very close to scoring the equaliser in the next attack, An dangerous in-swinging cross from the right side of the pitch manages to pick out Ashley Miller at the back post, and Ashley Miller headers the ball wide of Gillingham’s Left Hand Post and Faversham Town were inches away from scoring the equaliser, Miquel Scarlett, Ryan Huckle and Jack Tucker are being caught out with some of these early crosses from Faversham Town, and Gillingham need to be careful defensively, at the very least, get to half time with the slender 1-0 lead in-tact.
After that goal-scoring opportunity for Faversham Town, Gillingham then had the chance to double there lead with two goal-scoring opportunities in quick succession, Henry Woods see’s his shot on goal from distance charged down and cleared out of play for A Gillingham Throw On In Faversham Town’s Final Third, And From The Resulting Throw On, Bradley Stevenson throws the ball back to Ben Chapman, who squares the ball to Franck Moussa, who plays a one / two with Darren Oldaker and Franck Moussa is now in and behind Faversham Town’s Defence, and Franck Moussa see’s his driven effort towards goal saved by Simon Overland, And From Here, Simon Overland has kicked the ball long down-field and the ball bounces over Ryan Huckle and Ashley Miller’s Head and the ball runs all the way through to Gillingham’s Trialist Goalkeeper, and Faversham Town wanted a free kick, But no free kick was awarded in Faversham Town’s Favour.
Gillingham look to be particularly strong down the right side of the pitch - Faversham Town’s Left - With Darren Oldaker, Miquel Scarlett and Ben Chapman all getting touches on the ball, and Ben Chapman manages to clip the ball through to Henry Woods who had made a third man run behind Faversham Town’s Back-Line, and Henry Woods had fired in a low cross across the face of goal in an attempt to try and pick out Bradley Stevenson and Faversham Town managed to clear there lines, and the hosts then turned defence into attack, with Ryan Huckle taking one for the team by conceding a foul on the halfway line.
And from the resulting free kick, Faversham Town whip in an dangerous in-swinging cross which was too close to Gillingham’s Trialists Goalkeeper, who gathers the ball with ease and rolls the ball out to Miquel Scarlett, who tries to pick out Darren Oldaker with a threaded through-ball towards the halfway line, But Faversham Town managed to intercept the ball, before passing the ball out-wide towards the right wing, and Faversham Town whip in another dangerous in-swinging cross which is again gathered with ease again by Gillingham’s Trialist Goalkeeper, Faversham Town were penalised for a foul on the keeper, who landed awkwardly after catching that second cross, and despite getting some treatment, Gillingham’s Trialist Goalkeeper was unable to continue and Louie Catherall came on for Gillingham just before half time.
Stephen and Myself thought that The Trialists Goalkeeper was worth having another look at for Gillingham, Tomas Holy, Tom Hadler and Louie Catherall are Gillingham’s Three Senior Goalkeepers, and if Steve Lovell is planning to send Louie Catherall out on loan, then maybe Steve Lovell will look to sign another goalkeeper who is happy to be third choice, similar to last season where Ade Pennock signed Steve Arnold which allowed Gillingham to send Tom Hadler out on loan to Gloucester City.
And the last noteworthy moment of the first half was Miquel Scarlett clearing Gillingham’s Defensive Lines, and Gillingham take a slender 1-0 advantage with them into the half time interval, It’s just unfortunate that our trialists goalkeeper had to be substituted because of injury before Referee Scott Rudd blew his whistle for half time.
HALF TIME: FAVERSHAM TOWN 0 - 1 GILLINGHAM
Franck Moussa opened the scoring for Gillingham after four minutes by scoring from the penalty spot, and despite creating several goal-scoring opportunities in the first half, Gillingham have not been able to build on that lead, I do think that one of the reason’s why Gillingham have not extended the lead is because we do not have any strikers in the starting line up, Liam Nash, Elliott List, Tom Eaves, Josh Parker, Brandon Hanlan and Conor Wilkinson are all in Gillingham’s Match-Day Squad For The Bromley Game.
Stephen went to get a drink while I sent the following tweet on Twitter,,,, HALF TIME: FAVERSHAM TOWN 0-1 GILLINGHAM - Frank Moussa's Penalty is the difference between both sides, Feel free to ask me any questions you have about tonight's match.,,, I was asked a question at half time regarding the identity of Gillingham’s Trialist Goalkeeper and I could only reply with the following,,, No idea at the moment.,,, The only thing I could say is that this Goalkeeper isn’t a rookie because he looks older then Louie Catherall.
Stephen then joined me in the seated section down the opposite side of the main stand, and looking around Salters Lane, The Attendance looked to be in-between 200 and 350, Comparing this attendance to last season’s pre-season friendly where there was 1,214 supporters inside Salters Lane and there is a huge difference, I think Faversham Town were hoping for another attendance over 1,000, But with France V Belgium, Gillingham playing against Bromley and Faversham Town V Gillingham kicking off at 7.30PM, You can see why the attendance at Salters Lane is much lower compared to last season’s pre-season friendly, and also, last season saw Gillingham bring the full first team squad, this friendly is a mixture of some first team players, first year pro’s, trialists and second year scholars, so the interest in this friendly is perhaps not as enthusiastic compared to last year’s friendly.
Me and Stephen spoke about Gillingham’s Previous Matches Against Faversham Town, Last Season’s Pre-Season Friendly Saw Gillingham win 1-0 with the first team squad, I remember there being A 0-0 Draw with the youth team a few year’s ago, and Gillingham won 5-0 in my first ever visit to Faversham Town where it chucked it down and we had a thunderstorm during the second half.
But so far, Gillingham are winning 1-0 against Faversham Town, and both teams are out on to the pitch ready for The Second Half, And Gillingham have made one substitution at the break with A Trialists Wearing Number Twelve coming on to replace Billy Bingham - Who is clearly behind the rest of the first team players when it comes to match fitness and match sharpness levels and we’re not risking Billy Bingham at the moment.
SECOND HALF:
And The Trialists For Gillingham had made an immediate impact when he came on as substitute, winning A Corner Kick For Gillingham with the first noteworthy moment of The Second Half, Number Twelve had come on to play up-front alongside Bradley Stevenson with Henry Woods moving back into midfield, And from the resulting corner kick, Gillingham double there lead, Darren Oldaker whips in an dangerous in-swinging cross, and Franck Moussa times his run and climbs highest to header the ball into the back of the net to extend Gillingham’s Lead.
And on the balance of play, Gillingham deserve to be 2-0 up against Faversham Town and it is interesting to see Gillingham score both goals from the penalty spot and from a corner kick, and also, Franck Moussa has scored both goals and scored three goals in two matches for Gillingham in pre-season, Now some supporters will mention that Franck Moussa has only scored against Faversham Town and Sheppey Unuted, But nonetheless, Franck Moussa has still scored three goals in two matches, and he is staking a real claim to be offered a contract.
And having gone 2-0 up, Gillingham are looking to extend there lead even further with Ben Chapman’s Cross in Faversham Town’s Final Third Charged Down and deflected out of play for A Gillingham Corner Kick, And From The Resulting Corner Kick, Darren Oldaker whips in an dangerous in-swinging cross and Bradley Stevenson cannot divert the ball towards goal and the ball goes out of play for A Faversham Town Goal-Kick.
But Gillingham are still asking questions of Faversham Town Defensively, Franck Moussa passes the ball out-wide to Dean Cox down the left side of the pitch in Faversham Town’s Final Third, And Dean Cox manages to skilfully take on one defender and getting himself through towards the byline, and Dean Cox’s Attempted pull back is blocked and deflected out of play for A Gillingham Corner Kick, And From The Resulting Corner Kick, Darren Oldaker quickly takes a short corner kick towards Dean Cox, who takes a touch to control the ball, and Dean Cox whips in an dangerous in-swinging cross which is headed partially clear and away from danger, and Ben Chapman reacts quickest to get to the loose ball first, and Ben Chapman tries to pick out Dean Cox with a cross-field pass and Faversham Town manage to clear there lines by clearing the ball out of play for A Gillingham Throw On.
However, in the next goal-scoring opportunity and Faversham Town have got a great opportunity to score the consolation goal which will bring the hosts back into this match, Faversham Town have looked threatening from crosses because Gillingham are lining up with an dangerous in-swinging cross and Louie Catherall was very brave to throw himself in-front of A Faversham Town Striker who did manage to header the ball towards goal and Louie Catherall did in-fact make the save, and Ryan Huckle prevented the ball from going behind for a corner kick and passes the ball out-wide to Miquel Scarlett, and The Gillingham Centre Back is then fouled and Gillingham have been awarded a free kick which does in-fact relieve some of the pressure building on to our goal.
In the next attack, Gillingham managed to win themselves a corner kick, Darren Oldaker manages to pick out Dean Cox with a cross-field pass, and Dean Cox takes a touch to control the ball, before cutting inside into an more central position before curling in an dangerous in-swinging cross towards the right side of Faversham Town’s Penalty Area, And Ben Chapman chests the ball to get the ball under control, run towards the byline and pull the ball back towards Franck Moussa, who’s first time shot towards goal is blocked and deflected out of play for A Gillingham, However, from The Resulting Corner Kick, Faversham Town were looking to hit Gillingham on the counter attack, But Miquel Scarlett just about gets to the loose ball first and headers the ball back to Louie Catherall, And From Here, Louie Catherall kicks the ball long down-field and Faversham Town win the initial aerial challenge, and the second ball falls kindly to Darren Oldaker, who plays the ball out-wide to Ben Chapman first time, and Ben Chapman takes a touch to control the ball before passing the ball inside to Number Twelve For Gillingham, who lays the ball off for Bradley Stevenson to go for goal with a first time effort which is blocked and the ball deflects into Simon Overland’s Path, And The Faversham Town Goalkeeper Makes A Routine Save.
Franck Moussa is next to try his luck from distance with a driven effort towards goal which narrowly goes wide of Simon Overland’s Right Hand Post, But It Is Faversham Town who are looking to get themselves on the score-sheet with two goal-scoring opportunities in quick succession, the first goal-scoring opportunity of these two chances was a driven effort towards goal which fails to hit the target, but only just, But it is the second goal-scoring opportunity which is by far the more threatening of the two chances, With Faversham Town essentially through one on one and Louie Catherall made himself big and between Louie Catherall, Miquel Scarlett and Ryan Huckle, Gillingham did just about enough to keep our clean sheet in-tact.
After that goal-scoring opportunity, there were a number of substitutions for The Gills, ON: Jude Arthurs, George Sherinant, Ben Allan, Charles Noyelle, Jack Morrell and Noel Mbo OFF: Miquel Scarlett, Dean Cox, Ben Chapman, Darren Oldaker, Franck Moussa and Henry Woods, So we get to see many of Gillingham’s youngsters come on and play for the final half an hour, While Noel Mbo gets to play for thirty minutes, So let’s see if Noel Mbo can get himself on the score-sheet against Faversham Town.
And the first thing that Noel Mbo does since coming on as substitute is position himself between the ball and The Faversham Town Defender to win Gillingham A Corner Kick, And From The Resulting Free Kick, Charles Noyelle squares the ball to Bradley Stevenson, who should have gone for goal with an first time effort, But Bradley Stevenson takes on one player and looks to pull the ball back across the face of goal, But Bradley Stevenson does at least win a corner kick, and from the resulting corner kick, Charles Noyelle passes the ball short to Bradley Stevenson, who takes one touch to control the ball and another to fire a low driven effort towards the near post and Simon Overland manages to make the save towards his near post, and Faversham Town were almost caught out with that quickly taken corner kick.
With the number of substitutions made by Gillingham, There are opportunities for Faversham Town to take advantage of a lack of team cohesion, and Louie Catherall does exceptionally well to gather an dangerous in-swinging cross and I can see Faversham Town scoring after all the substitutions that Gillingham have made, and Faversham Town are just starting to grab a foothold in this match, because Faversham Town win a free kick in a very promising position on the pitch, However, Jack Tucker manages to intercept the ball and play the ball forward to Bradley Stevenson, who takes a touch to control the ball before looking to thread the ball for Gillingham’s Trialist Striker to run on to, But Gillingham’s Number Twelve was flagged for offside.
And Gillingham are now pressing for the third goal which would make the victory assured, Noel Mbo fires a low cross / shot across the face of goal which almost picks out Number Twelve For Gillingham, and Faversham Town managed to clear there lines, But this was only temporary reprieve because Bradley Stevenson now has possession of the ball and Bradley Stevenson threads the ball through to Number Twelve who see’s his one on one effort saved by Simon Overland.
After that goal-scoring opportunity, Gillingham made all of the remaining changes ON: Roman Campbell, TJ Bramble and Leroy Hlabi OFF: Jack Tucker, Ryan Huckle and Bradley Stevenson, Leroy Hlabi will line up alongside Noel Mbo in attack for the final fifteen minutes of this match, And with all the changes being made, Faversham Town managed to win themselves a corner kick, And the hosts almost scored from this corner kick, A Flick on at the near post was almost converted at the far post and Gillingham only just about survived - Set Plays is where Faversham Town will cause Gillingham problems for the rest of this match.
The next goal-scoring opportunity see’s Gillingham awarded a free kick down the right side of the pitch, and from the resulting free kick, Jude Arthurs passes the ball short to Charles Noyelle, who threads the ball down the line towards Leroy Hlabi, who uses his pace to get himself towards the byline and pull the ball back across the face of goal, and Noel Mbo’s Shot On The Turn Is Deflected Wide and Gillingham should have been awarded A Corner Kick, But Referee Scott Rudd awards A Goal-Kick Instead, And From The Resulting Goal-Kick, Simon Overland kicks the ball long down-field and Faversham Town are awarded a free kick in an central area on the pitch, And From The Resulting Free Kick which is aimed towards the back-stick, Ashley Miller headers narrowly wide and that was a golden goal-scoring opportunity for Faversham Town.
And in the next goal-scoring opportunity, Gillingham are awarded a free kick, Charles Noyelle whips in an dangerous in-swinging cross and Faversham Town win the initial aerial challenge, but the second ball drops to Ben Allan, who takes a touch to control the ball and pass the ball back to TJ Campbell, who clips in a high and hanging cross towards the back-stick, and although Faversham Town win the initial aerial challenge, the second ball drops to Gillingham’s Striker On Trial, who doesn’t get the best of connections on the ball and scuffs his effort wide of Simon Overland’s Right Hand Post, Number Twelve For Gillingham also had another goal-scoring opportunity a minute later, But his shot on target was routinely saved by Simon Overland.
However, Faversham Town came very close to scoring the best goal of the entire match, and it takes a magnificent save from Louie Catherall to deny Ashley Miller from scoring a bending curling effort towards the top right corner of the net, and Faversham Town only have been awarded a corner kick when I thought that they were going to score with that effort on goal from Ashley Miler, Thankfully, Gillingham managed to clear the resulting corner kick, but the chance is still there for the hosts to set up a grand-stand finish, because Louie Catherall comes rushing out of his penalty area to get to a long ball down-field, and Louie Catherall’s clearance basically tee’s up A Faversham Town Player to try an audacious lobbed effort towards goal, Thankfully, Louie Catherall had recovered and managed to get back into his penalty area to catch the ball, and that would have been a costly error from Louie Catherall, who moments earlier had managed to make a magnificent save to prevent Ashley Miller from scoring a remarkable goal.
Roman Campbell tries his luck from distance, but his speculative effort from distance clears Faversham Town’s Crossbar, And the final noteworthy moment of the match is Leroy Hlabi winning A Corner Kick For Gillingham just as Me and Stephen were walking behind the goal and making our way round towards where the dugouts are, and there was just about time to take the corner kick, and Referee Scott Rudd blows his whistle for Full Time, and Gillingham have kept a clean sheet and won 2-0 against Faversham Town.
FULL TIME: FAVERSHAM TOWN 0 - 2 GILLINGHAM
Stephen, Myself and Louis spoke about where Gillingham could strengthen the squad before The 2018 / 2019 Starts with that long trip to Accrington Stanley on August The Fourth, One thing the three of us agreed on is that the defence is sorted for the up and coming season, Luke O’Neill and Barry Fuller at Right Back, Bradley Garmston and Aaron Simpson at Left Back, Gabriel Zakuani, Max Ehmer and Alex Lacey our are three senior centre back’s with Finn O’Mara likely to be fourth choice, and then you have got youngsters Jack Tucker, Ryan Huckle and Miquel Scarlett who are all capable as additional centre back reinforcements, Another Goalkeeper will only be signed if Louie Catherall goes out on loan, and the fact that A Trialists Goalkeeper played between the sticks against Faversham Town suggests that we might look to sign A Goalkeeper, depending on how much remains in the playing budget of course.
Up-Front, Gillingham have got Tom Eaves, Liam Nash, Conor Wilkinson, Josh Parker, Brandon Hanlan and Elliott List as our six senior striker options with Noel Mbo and Leroy Hlabi underneath those six, I don’t think we should rule out the option of signing another striker, because signing another striker is more likely then signing another centre back, But it depends on what type of striker we’re looking to sign, A Pacey Striker who plays on the shoulder, A Target-Man who can come on if we’re in desperate need to score late on and need to go route one, or someone who can drop deep, find space and can pick a pass ???
I don’t think we can look past midfield as the area of the squad that needs to be strengthened during the off season, Lee Martin, Jake Hessenthaler and Scott Wagstaff have all moved on over the summer, Callum Reilly, Josh Rees, Regan Charles-Cook and Dean Parrett have all signed and of course, we have got the likes of Mark Byrne, Navid Nasseri, Ben Chapman, Darren Oldaker, Bradley Stevenson, Henry Woods, and Billy Bingham all available for selection, But there is a lack of experienced options to call upon and Franck Moussa has scored three goals in two matches and Dean Cox is a fantastic footballer, either player could sign for Gillingham at this present moment in time, there of course is the option to sign players on loan, But I think there are players available who we can offer a contract to who won’t break the bank balance.
Louis decided to head off while Me and Stephen waited around for a bit, and based on that performance, Then you have got to say that Faversham Town are going to struggle this season because you just have no idea where the goals are going to come from, Faversham Town ended Eighteenth In The Ryman Division One South and while it is likely the case that Faversham Town might have missed a few players duo to availability for this pre-season friendly on Tuesday Night, Faversham Town look like they need to strengthen there squad if there going to challenge at the right end of the table for this coming season.
Me and Stephen then left the ground before heading towards Weatherspoon’s to get something to drink, The Attendance being between 200 - 350 is perhaps one of the disappointing aspects of this match at Salters Lane, but given the strength of the squad, The 7PM Kick Off Time, Bromley V Gillingham being A First Team Fixture and Belgium V France On TV, You can see why the attendance wasn’t as high as expected, But Faversham Town V Gillingham’s Second Eleven and Second Year Scholar’s is better then no match at all, and this is the only pre-season friendly Stephen could travel to.
We headed back to Weatherspoon’s and spoke about the players performances against Faversham Town, and our main focus and attention is on trialists Franck Moussa and Dean Cox, with both players trying to earn themselves contracts with Gillingham Football Club, Franck Moussa scoring three goals in two games has certainly put himself in contention to earn himself a new contract, While Dean Cox playing for Gillingham against Sheppey United and Faversham Town suggests that we’re interested in signing him, I cannot see Gillingham signing both players and it defiantly is a case of signing one player over the other.
I then sent the following tweets while we were having a drink in the pub ONE: FULL TIME: FAVERSHAM TOWN 0-2 GILLINGHAM - Franck Moussa scored both goals for Gillingham Tonight, Feel free to ask me any questions you have about tonight's match. TWO: Tucker, Huckle and Scarlett were Gillingham's back three tonight, We have no idea on the identity of the trialists Goalkeeper though. AND THREE: Chapman played on the right wing, Dean Cox played on the left wing.
I then sent the following tweet, We got to see more of Dean Cox tonight because Dean Cox played for an hour, Gillingham had four trialists in the squad against Faversham Town tonight, Moussa and Cox are the two trialists who have played in two pre-season friendlies for Gillingham so far., and we found out that Gillingham won 5-1 against Bromley with goals from Callum Reilly, regain Charles-Cook, Brandon Hanlan, Josh Parker and Elliott List, and I sent the following two tweets to Ben, ONE: Dean Cox played for an hour tonight, He looked comfortable in possession of the ball, whipped in a few crosses that caused Faversham Town problems, But Franck Moussa has scored three goals in two matches, and Moussa is making an serious case for a new contract with Gillingham. AND TWO: Well Moussa and Cox have played for Gillingham against Sheppey United and Faversham Town, So Steve Lovell must be considering offering a contract to one of these two, I cannot see Gillingham signing both Moussa and Cox, But we will have to wait and see.
Once we finished our drinks, I went to the fish and chip shop to buy A Small Portion Of Chips And A Battered Sausage for £4.80, and Stephen went to A Indian TakeAway to buy his dinner and I eat my dinner - which is more like a midnight feast - out-side while waiting for Stephen to collect his order, and when Stephen came out with the food he had ordered, It was like Stephen had ordered the entire shop.
Stephen mentioned that he won’t be going to anymore pre-season friendlies and he will be going to Accrington Stanley Away on the opening day of the season, And that will be a match that quite a few of us will be looking to travel to via coach, I always have a preference for one of the longest away trips to be done and dusted on the opening day of the season, So Gillingham traveling to Accrington Stanley on the opening day of The 2018 / 2019 Season is a decent fixture.
I then headed back to Faversham Train Station, and I got on The 22.58PM Train back to Rainham, and while I was on the train, I checked any comments and feedback I got on Facebook and Twitter and I mentioned to Diane that Gillingham won 2-0 against Faversham Town along with the attendance being between 200 and 350,which is mostly because France played against Belgium In A World Cup Semi Final and Gillingham had sent there first team to Bromley which had A 7.45PM Kick Off Time.
I arrived back in Rainham at 23.18PM And I made the twenty minute walk back home, and I was back indoors at 23.40PM, Franck Moussa has certainly put himself in contention for an extended contract with Gillingham Football Club, even if we offered Franck Moussa A Contract until January which can be extended until the end of the season, that is one option Steve Lovell can take up, While Dean Cox has played in both matches against Sheppey United and Faversham Town, and he is another player putting himself in contention for a contract, But all in all, an excellent win for The Gills and an opportunity to watch the likes of Ben Chapman, Darren Oldaker, Bradley Stevenson, Henry Woods, Jack Tucker and Ryan Huckle get a run out, and see how well the second year scholar’s can perform against A Faversham Town Side who play competitive first team football in The Ryman Division One South.

The Most Famous Sofa is No More!
When you think of famous sofas, just a few come to mind. There is the Knole Sofa, from the 1600s, the first and most important sofa made. Though modified for today’s comfort, this version of a sofa is still widely made today – including this one that was just installed in Provence:
A modern day version of the Knole sofa seen at the “Le Mas des Poiriers.”
Another iconic sofa is the Chesterfield. Long thought to have been first made for Lord Phillip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, in the 18th century, this has never been authenticated. Still, the Chesterfield remains one of the most widely recognized sofas in the world.
And then there is Lee Radziwill’s famous silk velvet Tiger sofa – seen above.
Though not as famous as the Chesterfield or the Knole, it’s hard to think of another personally held sofa that is as well known as this one. Radziwill custom ordered the sofa in the 1960s when she moved from London to New York City. The sofa was placed in her library with its lilac walls. Radziwill kept the sofa for years and years and when her son Anthony moved into an apartment, she gifted him with the sofa.
Is this the most famous sofa of all times? Surely it’s not as famous as the original Knole sofa but it’s hard to think of a more well known one.
In the new Veranda, this house features a tiger sofa in Scalamandre silk velvet, inspired by Lee Radziwill’s own sofa. The sofa was the setting off point for the decor of the entire house.
The Radziwill sofa is so well known that when Lee’s daughter-in-law, Carole Radziwill, wrote her memoir, she included this story about the sofa:
“I have bumped up against history. It won’t be the first time. Most things here, I am learning, have a story. The tiger couch, for instance, is not just a couch, but one his mother had custom-made at De Angeles. It has been photographed for fashion books. People in certain circles know this couch, just as people in other circles know this chair.”
Carole Radziwill is famous for all her many lives, like the cats she is now fostering. First she was a single, very respected TV reporter working in war torn areas. Her career as a reporter earned her three Emmys and a Peabody Award.
Carole and Anthony Radziwill at their wedding.
While working as a reporter, Carole kissed her Prince and got married. And he was not just any Prince, but he was also the nephew of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. The title is from his father, who comes from a long line of Polish royalty. Apparently Anthony Radziwill never used his inherited title although his cousin and surrogate brother, John Kennedy Jr., used to teasingly call Anthony “Principe.” The two couples, Anthony and Carole and John and his wife Carolyn, became the closest of friends, and the four were inseparable.
Anthony was a testicular cancer survivor when they married and he suffered a recurrence of cancer on their honeymoon. Their five years of their marriage was marked by sickness, operations, and heartache. During this stage, Carole was the young bride but also a full time nurse.
John and Carolyn Kennedy’s ashes were sent to sea. Anthony was very, very ill at this stage.
After valiantly fighting to beat cancer, Anthony was very ill when he and Carole received the horrifying news that Carolyn and John Kennedy had died in a plane crash. Anthony clung to life for just three weeks before he too died. Suddenly, Carole was a young widow who lost not only her husband, but also her best friends. She was grief stricken for years.
Five years later Carole released her book “What Remains.” It’s a gut wrenching tale of cancer and death and loneliness and what remains left behind. I highly recommend it.
(to order the book, just click on the cover.)
Carole was the celebrated best-selling author in the next phase of her life, although she mostly stayed under the radar, that is until producer Andy Cohen, a friend, talked her into joining his hit Bravo show – “Real Housewives of New York.” On the show, Carole plays the role of the intelligent, mature housewife although she was embroiled in a bit of a scandal when she started dating someone about 20 years her junior.
Carole and her young boyfriend Adam Kenworthy
Hey, it’s good enough for our President AND the President of France!
Carole lives in an interesting building in between So-Ho and the West Village in an Historic Landmark District. The five story Queen Ann building was built in 1886 as a grammar school. Her apartment has large windows and 16’ ceilings in the main living room. A tiny kitchen and bedroom ring the expansive living room. Carole ran for and won a place on the co-op’s board of directors.
A few years ago, Carole made a big splash when she completely decorated her condominium in gold and caramel tones with green accents. The color scheme was chosen around the famous Radziwill tiger sofa.
The renovation was beautiful and it made all the blogs and websites.
The issue though became the sofa itself. The silk velvet fabric is so expensive that most can’t afford even a pillow made out of it, much less the 30 yards needed to cover an entire sofa. After almost sixty years, the velvet was becoming rather decrepit.
About ten years ago, Carole had pieced the velvet back together by taking fabric from the back of the bottom cushions that was then used to cover the torn parts.
Now, ten years later, the repairs were failing. The sofa was badly in need of a restoration – but at those prices, who could afford it?
When the new season started a few months ago, the sofa became a talking point. The other housewives commented on how bad it was beginning to look. Carole had started fostering kittens for Howard Stern’s wife Beth Stern and their claws had destroyed the fragile sofa completely.
On Andy Cohen’s late night show, even he asked about the famous sofa and Carole told him it was an issue, explaining how well known it is and that people are invested in it!
So it came as a complete shock to look at the Architectural Digest web site today and realize that the famous Tiger Sofa is no more!!
After all these years, the most well-known tiger sofa is forever gone.
Here’s a look at Carole’s condo – Before her first remodeling, The First Remodeling and The Newest Decor from today!
BEFORE: Before the first remodeling, Carole had an architect add these rather scary-looking, but stunning stairs up to the second bedroom. Underneath the stairs, she had a piano.
BEFORE: Another view of the dark floors and modern staircase. Definitely in need up a decorator.
DURING THE FIRST RENOVATION – Carol added a large chandelier and the apartment got a new coat of paint.
RENOVATION #1: For the first renovation, Carole hired Wayman Robertson. He refinished the front hall in Philip Jeffries Rivets wallpaper. At the opposite end is the kitchen with its new striped floors.
RENOVATION #1: The gold rug, the tiger sofa, the two chairs now covered in green velvet. Large new mirror between the windows, new chandelier, long console behind sofa. A small dining table and two chairs were placed under the large mirror.
RENOVATION #1: The windows are not the same width – but by dressing them alike, it’s not so noticeable.
.
RENOVATION #1: The view behind the sofa. Art work, matching lamps.
RENOVATION #1 – A big change was the addition of the gold velvet sectional underneath the stairs – the piano is now gone. Notice that the upholstered feet mimic the feet on the tiger sofa.
RENOVATION #1 – The ceiling was wallpapered with silver leaf in a square pattern. This helps to warm up the room and draw the ceiling back down to more human proportions.
RENOVATION #1 – A night view of the condo.
RENOVATION #1 – Carol posed in front of the new velvet sectional.
And here, in front of the staircase. The dining table and chairs have been moved over here for some reason.
BEFORE: Carol doesn’t cook so she decides to turn her kitchen into more of an office space. Of course right after the renovation is completed, she meets a budding Chef who moves in and starts cooking up a storm in her “office.”
BEFORE: Carol talks to her architect about turning the kitchen into more of an office.
RENOVATION #1 – The kitchen was updated. New mirrored subway tile backsplash. New striped floors. Counter space is turned into desk space by moving the sink over.
RENOVATION #1: Carole’s small bedroom is downstairs. Here is covered in a suede fabric on the bed and walls.
RENOVATION #1: The second bedroom is upstairs. Carole turned this small space into an office/closet.
The first renovation was given high marks. It looked good in photographs and on blogs and even better when Carole was filmed in her apartment for Real Housewives of New York.
But, this season, Season 9, the sofa became an issue. Looking back to an early episode, I should have realized a completely new renovation was in the works: fabric samples in blue tones were laid across the back of the sofa. I just didn’t really notice those!
In a later episode, Bethany comes over to talk about the sofa. She tells Carole that the destruction “looks intentional at this point.” She says the sofa looks like it has gone through a ginzo knife and a Cuisinart. They decide to turn over the cushion.
And here you can see the bottom cushion is covered in a plain brown fabric, since a decade ago, Carole had already used that fabric to repair the sofa.
There was just no way to go on with the sofa like this, especially with a litter of foster kittens running around.
When Carol meets John Bossard, a designer, in Aspen, she asks him to redecorate for her. Perhaps he already knows about the famous Radziwill sofa. No one can be sure of that. It’s hard to believe but Bossard does not have a web site up, yet. Oy. NO WEB SITE?!?!?
At first the order was just to redo “THE” sofa but of course that never works and John’s work was not finished until the entire apartment was redecorated from top to bottom, just a few years after it was all done before.
Bossard kept the Jeffries paper in the entry but the rug was updated with a more traditional design which suits the small space much better. The kitchen was closed off with a frosted door that lets in light but keeps out the distraction of ovens and refrigerators. The ceiling was painted a dark color and a contemporary sputnik fixture was added along with a collection of mirrors. And it looks like all the trim was painted a darker brown. The changes are subtle, but the space is much more elegant than it was before.
WOW. WOW. The new apartment is completely different!!! It’s now icy blue and silver and very sleek much like Carole is!! The tall mirror remains but now there are blue curtains and a fabric shade, along with window seats in blues. The arrangement is different too – the curved sofa that was under the stairs has been moved across from the Radziwill sofa that is now –EEK – in an icy blue fabric by Lee Jofa!!!
Say a goodbye prayer for the most famous sofa that is now just a memory.
And here is how it looks. Bossard said he had to rebuild the sofa, replacing the filling and reconstructing its original form. It looks wonderful and brand new and good to go for another 60 years. Carole’s twin Brutalist table lamps, wearing new icy blue shades, remain on the console, next to a new piece of art work. There are all new tables – the wood coffee table is gone, as are all the side tables. The one thing I miss are the Chinese chairs that once flanked the console. I don’t understand why they were tossed.
Carole’s original Dunbar chairs, now recovered, remain, as does the shelf and cabinet. The floors were also redone, they are now a silvery gray brown.
I love the new furniture arrangement – it makes more sense like this.
Another banquette was added to the corner, this time it becomes a small dining spot, which is handy when your boyfriend is a chef. The sunburst mirror remains, but everything else is new.
The view in front of the cabinet and shelf. The faux sheep are at the right and at the left, the plant is actually a lamp!
A close up of the new icy blue sofa. In the corner, an acrylic pedestal.
The kitchen aka office has a new fabric wall, but that’s all.
The first floor bedroom has also been completely redone. In silvery blues with pink accents – it blends with the living room decor. The walls are upholstered and there is a new petal art exhibit by Bradley Sabin above the beds. The vanity was moved down from the second floor closet.
There is just enough room for another window seat in pink.
And upstairs in the second bedroom, the once office closet is now a large dressing room. The room was carpeted in leopard in homage to the now long gone tiger. The ceiling was upholstered and everything is now dramatically lit. It’s for a star, that’s for sure. But it’s hard to believe they actually sell this space as a “second bedroom” when in reality it is just a small closet!
And so, this sofa that made it through the swinging sixties, the Vietnam war days, the Bonfire of the Vanities 80s…..
to the advent of the internet, through the new millennium, to the destruction of the twin towers and to the age of social media!!! Whew!!
Do you think it will last another 60 years? I doubt it. Surely it won’t be remembered as a blue sofa! Long live the tiger sofa!!!
