Matsuda could concievably pull off 'he had it coming' cell block tango but Light would absolutely give the better performance.
edit no actually yknow what im putting these in the body. look at them. LOOK AT THEM.
#Light revenge on Matsuda when
yeah yeah sure its compelling how Matsuda shoots Light
drags his own idol down from the pedestal he put Light on while Light comes down kicking and screaming for starting the circumstances that led to Soichirous death among other things but mostly Soichirou - who Matsuda also idolized in a far more paternal fashion - and basically throws Light at Ryuk's door
because with that many bullet wounds light is no longer capable of entertaining Ryuk or keeping the show going and thus Light dies. it's very good stuff. BUT. ALSO. CONSIDER. Light who barely cared about Matsuda whatsoever but cooperated with him nevertheless only to get punished for it BRUTALLY. The madonnawhore with his hands made of ceramic on Matsuda's throat ykno? Matsuda and the 'be careful what you wished for' theme of wanting Light's light

the When the Levee Breaks to Swan Song to Jack in the Box to Unity throughline. i'm gonna puke. the fucking cycle of patriarchal abuse at a cosmic scale but also on a granular level. we're always going back to mary bleeding and burning on the ceiling. we're always going back to sam breaking down, giving himself up to lucifer, and throwing himself into the depths of hell. familial violence is an ouroborous that both births and consumes itself. and in the end, sam, the moral compass - the one always branded crazy and selfish and disobedient for daring to question his family's reality - being the one to break it all.

occasionally i wind up in a conversation with someone whose only knowledge of star trek comes from the latest shows and i mention i'm reluctant to watch snw because i see spock being really emotional in gifs and i worry he'll be really out of character and every time they will say to me "oh that's because it's a prequel! they're showing HOW he became the spock in the original series, like learning to control his emotions and everything" and i'm like you mean his childhood? you mean when he was raised on vulcan by a vulcan?? you mean when he was brought up in a culture that taught him to control his emotions from birth as part of his culture and heritage???? and they'll say "it's because he's only half vulcan you know so it's harder for him" and i have to end the conversation there so i don't rip their throat out while attempting to explain that humans can also control their emotions and that wouldn't really help my point if i let myself do that

Before Gentleman Jack: Emma Donoghue on Anne Lister and Eliza Raine
Bestselling author Emma Donoghue introduces Anne Lister (now often known as Gentleman Jack) and Eliza Raine, the real women behind her latest novel, Learned By Heart.
Tumblr media
Who was Eliza Raine, and what was her relationship with Anne?
I wish Anne Lister’s first lover was just as famous as her, but Eliza Raine (1791-1860), shamefully mistreated during her long life, has been ignored ever since she died in obscurity. This fascinating woman – orphan heiress of an English East India Company doctor and his Indian ‘country wife’ – deserves attention not just for her beauty, her importance to Lister and her vivid letters, but for her outsider perspective on Regency England. Banished to the so-called motherland to be ‘Englished’ at six, with a sister she never got on with, Eliza Raine must have witnessed society from a uniquely critical perspective, and so I found it was her untold story that ended up as the centre of Learned by Heart.
Is Gentleman Jack based on a true story?
Yes, the two seasons of Sally Wainwright’s BBC/HBO series Gentleman Jack (2019-22) are not only gripping, big-budget period drama, but they’re based on archival documents. Wainwright somehow managed to craft the dramatic arcs of each episode from the daily minutiae of Lister’s five-million-word secret diary. I can’t think of another example of TV adaptation actually contributing to an archive in a virtuous feedback loop: Wainwright not only used a screenwriting award to fund scans of the massive diary, but the fandom spawned by her show helped inspire hundreds to sign up as Code Breakers (aka Lister Sisters) and do the comma-by-comma work of transcribing it. A smaller group of the Code Breakers also made it possible for me to write Learned by Heart, by transcribing and making sense of about a hundred letters between, by or about Lister and Raine.

i do understand why this works for me and not necessarily for everyone
(a major theme of my work is that, in the question of whether people are inherently good or inherently bad, the only true answer is that we are inherently silly and kinda stupid, including all the way down to most evils not being done with grand motives in mind, but because of simple human incompetence or pettiness or not-seeing-the-forest-for-the-trees, but that just as often most acts of good have no grander motivation either, its just a matter of realizing this, realizing your capacity for both, and watching yourself to try and limit your harm as best you can)
but i do think its fun to just have mistakes in stories be mistakes. like. the character themselves just kinda fucked up that one moment, or should have known better, but just. didn't realize. or only realizes it with the blessing of afterthought. like people just DO shit that would get dinged as plotholes all the time, constantly, and i think its very weird to act like characters acting like people in a thousand minor ways is something that flat out shouldn't exist in fiction.
#all the care guide says is 'biomass'#everyone is stupid at least part of the time. its fine.#even very smart people are just as prone to being stupid in the same areas that theyre smart in#in ways that they absolutely should know better than to make#and ESPECIALLY are stupid in areas of knowledge theyre less familiar in#its okay. people are just like this.#the most competent person in the world is still making a thousand of these mistakes all the time#the only difference is that they know how to roll with them#also its fun because now you get the characterization moment of said character REALIZING their fuckup#and how they respond to that#and how other characters respond to it when they realize the first character made that mistake#i like the ''wait. why did i do that?'' moments#and showing affection through other characters ribbing them#and again. showing competence mostly through how good they are at rolling with the punches#effectively being more about thinking light on their feet#instead of having the perfect answer all the time (because often this just makes a character look More Stupid to me)#(than when they fuck up but know how to course-correct)#also tbf another major theme i like is ''everyone is a hypocrite and no one has a perfect list of character traits''#like. people have conflicting traits or personalities within themselves just as like. a standard.#everyone is weird and messy and can basically do or say anything if properly led to that point#nothing is written in stone and people are fluid ESPECIALLY internally#people will constantly do shit that doesnt seem to be in-character for them but it is#because they did it. theres no monopoly on who someone should be.
