Matsuda could concievably pull off 'he had it coming' cell block tango but Light would absolutely give the better performance.
edit no actually yknow what im putting these in the body. look at them. LOOK AT THEM.
#Light revenge on Matsuda when
yeah yeah sure its compelling how Matsuda shoots Light
drags his own idol down from the pedestal he put Light on while Light comes down kicking and screaming for starting the circumstances that led to Soichirous death among other things but mostly Soichirou - who Matsuda also idolized in a far more paternal fashion - and basically throws Light at Ryuk's door
because with that many bullet wounds light is no longer capable of entertaining Ryuk or keeping the show going and thus Light dies. it's very good stuff. BUT. ALSO. CONSIDER. Light who barely cared about Matsuda whatsoever but cooperated with him nevertheless only to get punished for it BRUTALLY. The madonnawhore with his hands made of ceramic on Matsuda's throat ykno? Matsuda and the 'be careful what you wished for' theme of wanting Light's light

Death Note but Light plays stupid?
Like imagine post-Yotsuba Light
they get the notebook from Higuchi and Light just pretends to not know English or something bc the rules are written in English
(like his Dad doesn't remember him learning English or anything + he's never spoken it, never taken it in school, etc)
But like obv L knows he's lying his ass off but Light keeps leaning over his shoulder and asking L to read him the rules one-by-one and L is annoyed asf
L gets revenge lmfao:
starts muttering in English under his breath where just Light can hear him and when asked what he said by Light he just says something completely different than what he was muttering about
He talks to Matsuda, Soichiro, Watari about Light and low-key shit talks him in English and tells Light they're talking about the Kira case
saying vague out-of-the-blue comments like "Light do you think Matsuda's intelligence quotient is higher than yours? Considering he knows another language and you don't..." just to be a dick
Oh and Light is PISSED bc he knows L knows and he also knows L is fucking with him every chance he can get

BACK ON MY MATSULIGHT HANNIBAL AU BULLSHIT ✨✨✨
Because Light would be the perfect Hannibal; he's arrogant and well-dressed and well-liked and well-respected in his field. He's just as sadistic; just as lonely. Sayu is his Mischa. His tragedy one of a escaped prisoners taking revenge on his police chief father with only he and Sayu escaping, only to have misery befall them both yet again. He eats criminals instead of the rude—and his favorite organs to take are hearts 🫀
"I do so admire your courage. I think I'll eat your heart."
The biggest difference would be that Light sees himself as someone righteous and good rather than being aware of himself as a calamity like Hannibal is.
And Matsuda, oohh Matsuda. He wouldn't be the perfect Will Graham—but he's the perfect vessel for corruption. He's already a killer after all, if a lawful one. All Light needs to do is help reveal to Matsuda that he enjoys it. Why else would he put himself in a position to kill?
Ryuk is in an odd position. He is at once one of the criminals that attacked Light's family and also the one who helped he and Sayu escape. When Light killed the rest of them, he let Ryuk live to repay the debt. Ryuk likes to hang around him like a stray cat—and much like a cat, he has an excellent sense of smell. When Matsuda starts losing time, well... let's just say it's not long before Light knows the reason why.
Matsuda isn't as intelligent as Light, but he knows what it's like to watch the light leave someone's eyes. He knows what warm blood feels like on his hands. He knows the sound of someone taking their last breath under his hands. He has more confirmed kills than anyone else on the force—and each one has been law-written righteous.
How could Light resist?
Matsuda does so enjoy his cooking, after all.

drives me a bit insane how when near is like "i'll kill mello for you if you give me the death note :3 that way we can test the 13 day rule :3" aizawa, ide and matsuda have such different responses. matsuda wants to go along with it because mello killed soichiro, foreshadowing him shooting light in revenge for soichiro while also highlighting that the chief's mentorship of him didn't pass on his ideals. ide is against it because he believes that the notebook shouldn't be used by anyone and thinks that soichiro would agree — he says in the epilogue that the notebook is the worst murder weapon in the history of mankind, showing he may actually be the most closely aligned with soichiro out of all the task force. and then aizawa is against it because he doesn't trust near.
it's all the more fascinating that in the epilogue it's matsuda who trusts near the least, nominally BECAUSE he believes that near used the notebook. but he had no problem with near using the notebook to kill mello, so it's clear that that's not his actual issue with near and the yellow box warehouse...[puts one more coin in the "matsuda was in love with light" jar]

i was thinking that me as a mysme fan getting into death note, i can never escape the mysme characters cuz, we have yongsun kim (Seven's VA) voicing Light and.....we have......Matsuda who is scarily similar to yoosung. I feel like moreso I will never escape yoosung cuz he ends up finding me in many of the anime/manga stuff I get into. Im also getting a bit interested in NANA and there we have Hachi who reminds me of him. I was really into tokyo revengers at one point and...even there I found some characters who remind me of him
And no matter wherever I go, he finds me, whether in the form of Matsuda in Death note or Hachi in NANA and...can I confess I actually find it beautiful because I always always fall for characters like that and Matsuda and Hachi are my faves in their respective series.
Oh, I feel you on that front, anon! I always find myself either seeing some traits of my favorite characters in other media I consume, or I straight up start thinking of a way to put these two universes together. I rarely do anything serious with it, but it's a fun brain exercise! Like playing in a sandbox. It's like some of these characters are just that dear to your heart, you can't help but think of them even when you're apart. It's sweet even! I'm sure Yoosung would be very giddy to hear that you can't help but think of him so often. That means he's just that precious to you! And, you know what? He's definitely the type to do the same. You two would babble to one another about different characters that remind you of each other, and I think that's adorable <3
Also, this is off topic, but GOD do I love Youngsun Kim's (Saeyoung's VA) work as Light. I honestly sometimes listen to clips of it whenever I need to picture him in an antagonistic role. Reverse au? Definitely ><

Kodoku [こどく] | Angst | L x Fem!Reader
Told y’all I’d do it.
こどく (Ko-do-ku) — loneliness; isolation
~*~*~*
Content: So, this isn’t REALLY an L x reader…you’ll figure it out once you start reading :(
Warnings: Suicide, major character death, murder, mentions of murder, heavy depression themes, abandoned child
Notes: This probably wont be the only thing I’ll write to this song, so stay tuned. Kasumi belongs to a friend of mine, whereas Cade and Miriam belong to me.
~*~*~*
Tumblr media
(Y/n) glared Light down as Matsuda had shot him. Her heart beat rapidly in her chest — it was finally over. Everything her husband and sons and herself had worked towards, was about to finally come to an end.
Aizawa and Ide moved to stop Matsuda from killing him, but (Y/n) just continued to glare Light down. For so long her husband had his suspicions, ones that (Y/n) shared. But before now, they never had any proof.
Behind them, Mikami panicked and thrust his pen into his stomach, blood spurting out. She didn’t bother to look at the ‘X-Kira.’
“Gevanni, Rester.” (Y/n) called out to the men, almost boredly.
“Right!”
“On it!”
The two men rushed to stop Mikami, as well as Aizawa and Ide, but everyone knew he was a goner.
“Mother?” Near looked up.
“Hand me the notebook.” (Y/n) held her hand out expectantly, not looking away from Light.
Near nodded and handed her the note and a pen. Light used the distraction to get up and stumble, almost drunkenly, out of the warehouse. Matsuda yelled out for him, but once he was out of sight, (Y/n) gave chase.
She didn’t know what Near would do to hold the others back, or if they’d even obey his orders. But all she knew was she was going to get her revenge for her husband and two sons.
Light heard the second pair of footsteps behind him and looked, then screamed out at the sight of (Y/n). He didn’t try to negotiate like usual, she figured it was because he wanted to save energy in case he somehow survived.
Light led her to an abandoned warehouse, he clearly had no idea where he was going.
“Light Yagami.” (Y/n) spoke with a definitive voice.
Light, panicked, looked behind him.
“I once believed we were friends. Or, partially.” She took a step towards him, making him take one back. “But then you took my husband, my sons, and so many other people.”
B flashed in her mind. Kasumi flashed in her mind. Takada, too. Soichiro, even if not directly. She narrowed her eyes even more.
“You’ve ripped everything to shreds. You’ve created chaos, not order. You are no God. You never will be.”
“S-So what’re you going to do?! Kill me?!” Light pants, screaming.
“Maybe. If this notebook is truly the real deal.” She opens it, then looks back at Light. “What do you think of that, Light? This is my perfect victory.”
She wrote his name down in the note, and Light’s eyes widened in realization. She had heard him, at L’s funeral. He could feel his left arm growing numb.
“Thats right,” (Y/n) moved to stand over him, her hair framing her face, the light streaming in from the sunset making her look even more terrifying to the young man.
And with a voice that, to Light, sounded like it had L’s in sync with hers, spoke to him.
“I win.”
Light then could no longer speak. His chest felt tight, like he couldn’t breathe, and it burned. It burned a lot. Tears welled up in his eyes as (Y/n) continued to glare at him. He could’ve sworn that L, Mello and Matt surrounded the (hair color) woman, looking down at him.
(Y/n) watched Light Yagami die slowly. As he was still dying, she sighed and sat next to him on the stairs, bringing her knees up to her chest. She could hear Light’s labored breathing. Her own tears welled up in her eyes.
(Y/n) and Light both went through memories of the task force together four years ago, but each for their respective reasons. Light, because he didn’t know what he did wrong, and maybe felt a twinge of guilt. But a little bit of guilt didn’t stop him in the past. For (Y/n), it was the nostalgia.
When she finally looked back at Light Yagami, he was still, his eyes glazed over and body stiff, just as her husband had been when he died in her arms. Clenching her eyes shut to keep from crying, she rested her chin on her knees.
“Did you see that, L…? Mello, Matt…?” She sobbed into her knees. “We won. We finally…fucking won…”
(Y/n), now feeling more alone than ever, sobbed harshly. Yes, the case was done. She’d gotten her revenge. But now she felt strangely…empty. She wont be able to share the fruits of her victory with those she lost.
She didn’t know how long she sobbed and cried out for, but it was night by the time Aizawa had put a hand on her shoulder and told her it was time to leave.
“Will you be alright, (Y/n)-chan?” Matsuda asked softly, watching the paramedics take Light’s body away.
“…maybe one day.” (Y/n) followed Matsuda’s line of sight.
Matsuda and (Y/n) shared a long hug and many crying sessions that night. Even with Matsuda, Near, Rester, Gevanni, Linder, Ide, Aizawa and Mogi, she felt alone.
When she crawled into bed that night, it was like she had lost L all over again. The pain jabbed and tore through her heart like a knife— no, a sword. It was so painful, and (Y/n) wondered for a moment if thats what Light had felt before dying.
~*~*~*
In the days following the solving of the Kira case; Misa Amane had killed herself, Mogi transferred to work in the United States, while Aizawa, Ide and Matsuda stayed as policemen in Japan. Near and (Y/n) went back to Wammy’s house in England, where they held Mello’s and Matt’s funerals. Rester, Gevanni and Linder stayed in the United States to help Mogi.
They had been buried next to L. It was a rough day for everyone.
(Y/n) now leaned against the doorframe of Matt and Mello’s old room. It was left exactly how it was before they ran away. Furniture gathering layers of dust, old consoles and games Matt was unable to take with him were left behind, the TV needed a good dusting, and the curtains hadn’t been opened in forever.
Above the nightstand, which was situated between their beds, (Y/n) saw an old photo of all of them together as a family. L in his weird sitting position with Near and his favorite Iron Man toy in his lap, (Y/n) standing next to him while Mello and Matt stand in front of her. They all seemed really happy.
She was supposed to go through their initial stuff and decide what to do with it. Roger would have done it himself, but he “wouldn’t want to intrude, ma’am.”
She started with their nightstand. That would be the least painful, right? Their dressers were still hastily open, some old clothing hanging over the edges. (Y/n) pulled one of the drawers out. A lot of it was papers filled with studies, mainly Mello’s more than Matt’s.
(Y/n) chuckled. “I forgot that Matt was only studying hard until becoming L’s successor was optional…”
She couldn’t remember how many times she’d come into the room to tell Matt to turn his games off, and that it was late. Oh, what she wouldn’t give to do that one last time.
Feeling the tears prick her eyes again, she continued. The first drawer held nothing but scraps of paper that will never be used again. The second drawer however, was filled with drawings Matt and Mello did when they were kids.
Picking up the first one carefully, (Y/n) smiled softly at the image. It was, from left to right; L, (Y/n), Mello, Matt and Near. Everyone was labelled.
That was it. Drawings upon drawings of the family, when Matt and Mello were kids. (Y/n) kept a hand to her mouth as she sobbed.
“Mom…?” Near spoke softly. “Roger said you’d be in here…”
“Oh, Near, honey…” She sniffled and rubbed the tears from her eyes.
Near wordlessly moved forward and hugged her. He had been hurting, too, he just didn’t know how to show it. He let his mom sob into his little frame, making him want to cry. But, he held himself back and didn’t.
“I came to get you because we have someone new today…” Near whispered. “He’s outside with his mom. She wants to speak with you directly.”
(Y/n) sniffled and nodded, pulling away. “Okay, um…”
Near stands with her, keeping a hand comfortingly on her back, looking at her with concern.
“Thank you, Near. C’mon, let’s go see what’s happening outside.” She threw on a smile, one that Near didn’t like, but he followed her anyway.
Outside, a woman was waiting with a small boy. The woman was crouched at her sons height, talking to him. (Y/n) remembered when that was her with her own sons.
“Hello, you said you wanted to speak with me directly, yes?”
The woman looked up, then stood. “Yes. I’m Miriam, pleased to meet you.”
“And what brings you by today?” (Y/n) threw Miriam and the boy a sweet smile, and was a bit taken aback at how much the boy looked like Mello.
“May we talk, mother to mother?”
(Y/n) nodded and shuffled away from Near and the boy with Miriam. The woman finally broke and began to cry.
“I can’t…I thought I could be like you, but I don’t know how you do it…”
“Ma’am, calm down. It’s going to be okay. Your son will be safe here.” (Y/n) wanted nothing more than to cry with her.
“No, I know. My um…boyfriend of sorts grew up here. He was actually um…” she sniffled. “one of your sons.”
(Y/n) was thrown back a little. She glanced at the boy, who was busy looking at Near’s robot toy.
“Mello…?”
“Mhm.” Miriam nodded. “We were in the same mafia group…listen, I know you don’t know me but Mello talked about you in such a good light…I can’t keep Cade in an environment like that…”
She looked back at Miriam at the mention of the boy’s name. She clenched her jaw and then nodded. “Yeah, yeah no problem. We’ll take him.”
Miriam smiles sadly. “Oh, oh thank you, (Y/n).”
She nods and glances at the ground, then looks back at Cade. Miriam takes that as a sign to hug the older woman, which she hesitantly returns. Cade turned to look at the two of them, the dirty blonde boy and the (hair color) woman making eye contact.
Cade was like his father. With one look, he understood everything. Even with Cade here, as a new child to raise with the others, everything still felt so empty. Nothing could bring her family back. Near and Cade were all she had left.
Although, when Cade was waving goodbye to Miriam, and then turned to (Y/n) with tears in his eyes, a look Near recognized, she realized she wasn’t the only one feeling alone. All three of them did, no matter the circumstances.
(Y/n) pulled both Cade and Near into a hug. Maybe, if nothing else, they could all be alone together.

Note
in your most recent post you said light is making more decisions about his kills than is readily apparent, would you mind elaborating on that? I’m pretty new to the fandom, and I haven’t seen much on that topic
yes absolutely!! thank you for asking!
basically, there are two categories of murders that light preforms:
murders under kira’s name
murders preformed by light, in secret. no one except light and ryuk ever learn about these
as kira, light isn’t indiscriminately killing anyone who breaks the law. he’s only killing people kira believes deserves to die. we don’t know exactly what the parameters are, but there are a few clues scattered around:
he is explicitly not killing people who kill out of self-defence, or people who kill out of what he considers justifiable revenge
he is not killing people who have committed crimes without ill-intent, or people who have already served their sentences — when mikami starts doing so, he gets in contact with takada to stop him
he doesn’t seem to care about white collar crime —  L thinks it’s out of character when the third kira (higuchi) starts killing white collar criminals
there’s also a general sense that he’s killing people who commit crimes against those who are in some way vulnerable. this isn’t specifically stated anywhere, but a number of characters (including matsuda) talk about how kira is standing up for the weak
it’s also worth mentioning that every single character, without exception, agrees that the people kira is killing have done genuinely morally reprehensible things. i don’t think there’s any reason to think that’s not the case.
in practise, he does end up killing quite a few people who’ve committed minor crimes (ex. the purse snatcher he kills during the whole potato chip thing.) these are very clearly delineated as out of the ordinary, and are not a part of kira’s core philosophy. they’re extremely important, though, because they demonstrate that light has no issues whatsoever compromising kira’s principles. this is because kira's principles are not the same as light's principles.
in secret, light is also killing what he calls ‘immoral people, and people who harass others.’ he’s doing this via illness and accidents, and does not want this to be immediately associated with kira. i think this is probably one of the more interesting things about his entire philosophy. once he’s decided one group of people is okay to kill, he’s happy to decide other people are, too. various characters are willing to sacrifice the lives of people who've committed crimes (by ceasing to pursue kira) because they think it will make them safer, but light ... literally just does not care. kira does, but light does not. he feels just as guiltless killing people who are rude to one another as he does people who've committed serial murders. he isn't actually protecting law-abiding people or the weak and the vulnerable. he's not protecting anyone.
(so basically tl;dr he’s making more choices than is readily apparent and then beneath those choices he’s making other, even worse choices)

Death Note Quotes Pt. 2
"In this world, there are very few people who actually trust each other."
- Light Yagami
“No, I can’t laugh yet. I’ve got to hold it in. They’re all gonna die, 40 seconds after he wrote down their names. Thirty five seconds… I’ll claim my victory then!”
- Light Yagami
"L, do you know gods of death love apples?"
- Light Yagami
“I’ve gotten rid of everything in my way. I am the god of the new world.”
- Light Yagami
“My dad? You mean Soichiro Yagami. That’s right Matsuda. In this world, all those earnest people like him who fight for justice, they always lose. You want a world where people like that are made to be fools?! I know you understand, so kill the others! Shoot them!”
- Light Yagami
"In the end, L is indeed the greatest detective on earth..."
- Light Yagami
“That’s right… I am Kira. And what can you do? Kill me right here? Hear this. I’m not only Kira. But I’m also… God of the new world! Kira has become law in the world we now live. He’s the one who’s maintaining order. I have become Justice. The only hope for mankind. Kill me? Is that really the right thing to do? Since Kiras appearance six years ago, wars have stopped and global crime rates have been reduced by over 70%. But, it’s not enough. This world is still rotten! With too many rotten people. Somebody has to do this! When I first got that notebook all those years ago, I knew I had to do it. No, I was the only one who could. I understood killing people was a crime. There was no other way! The world had to be fixed! A purpose given to me! Only I could do it. Who else could have done it?! And come this far?! Would they have kept going?! The only one… who can create a new world… is me.”
- Light Yagami
“Irrespective of how gifted you are, you cannot change the world alone.”
- L
"This is an outrage... taking advantage of this situation! I assure you, I will get to the bottom of this!"
- L
"I don't sit like this because I want to. I have to sit like this. If I were to sit normally, my deductive skills will immediately be reduced by roughly 40%."
- L
“Tell me Light, from the moment you were born, has there ever been a point where you’ve actually told the truth?”
- L
“It will be lonely won’t it? You and I will be parting ways soon.”
- L
“I hear the bell.”
- L
“Humans who use the notebook are cursed with fear, pain, and misery. Hm. Of course, Soichiro didn’t use the notebook. He got to die believing that his son wasn’t Kira. I guess that means… he was happy.”
- Ryuk
“Humans are so interesting. Of course, you can use money to get apples so I understand.”
- Ryuk
“What is right from wrong? What is good from evil? Nobody can truly distinguish between them. Even if there was a god. Now, supposing a god and his world existed, even then I’d stop and think for myself. I’d decide for myself whether his teachings are right or wrong. After all, I am just the same as you. I put faith in my own convictions as to what I believe is right, and consider them to be righteous.”
- Near
“If you can’t win the game, if you can’t solve the puzzle… then you’re just a loser.”
- Near
“Didn’t I already tell you all that nobody was going to die?”
- Near
“I bet Mello knew in his heart, that working by ourselves, neither of us would be able to obtain our goal, and surpass our mentor, L. But together… Together we can stand with L. Together we can surpass L! And now, acting as one, we face the Kira who defeated L, and with solid evidence, beat him at his own game! Let’s see you try to talk your way out of this one… if you can.”
- Near
“No. You’re just a murderer Light Yagami. And this notebook is the deadliest weapon of mass murder in the history of mankind. You yielded to the power of the Shinigami and the notebook. And you have confused yourself with a god. In the end, you’re nothing more than a crazy serial killer. That’s all you are. Nothing more. And nothing less.”
- Near
“It’s time I started living my own life.”
- Mello
“In the end, there is no greater motivation than revenge.”
- Mello
“What was it all for then?! What about your dad?! What the hell did he die for?!”
- Matsuda Touta
“You lead your own father to his death. And now he’s gone, you call him a fool? I’ll kill him! He has to die!”
- Matsuda Touta
“Laws aren’t perfect, because humans who created laws aren’t perfect. It’s impossible to be perfect. However, the laws are evidence of the human’s struggle to be righteous.”
- Soichirou Yagami

Tokyo Revengers Characters: Favourite Death Note Character
Who I think Tokyo Revengers characters favourite Death Note character is and why
I honestly was so bored in class and this idea came to me
Chifuyu: I think his favourite character would be Misa. Chifuyu is boy who loves love. Misa and Chifuyu are both hopeless romantics and he sees himself in her character.
Baji: Baji’s favourite character is Ryuk. Both of these characters just love causing chaos so I don’t see why he wouldn’t love Ryuk. (Plus both of them can be pretty scary when they are hungry).
Kisaki: Kisaki just loves LIght Yagami. They way they are able to plan out everything is somewhat similar, Kisaki basically believes he is Light. Both have embarrassing deaths too.
Draken: His favourite character is Rem. Draken sees himself a lot in Rem’s character. Rem is like the protector of her loved ones and so is Draken. Both Draken and Rem are like mother figures for the ones they care about.
Mikey: Mikey’s favourite character is Mello. Mello and Mikey are similar in a lot of ways. They don’t get enough credit for how smart they are and they also act on impulse too. Mikey also sees himself in Mello in little ways too, like how they’re obsessed with their favourite snack(s) and share a love for motorcycles. And have beautiful long blonde hair too
Takemichi: His favourite character is Matsuda. Both of them are put down for being stupid but they have their heroic moments and aren’t as dumb as people believe. Takemichi sees himself in Matsuda becuase both characters and sweethearts who are trying their best.
Shinichiro: His favourite character is Matt. Matt is the cool guy who plays video games, smokes and drives a cool car. Literally stole the show in his small amount of screen time. Shinichiro thinks he’s just like Matt, because he belives he’s a “cool guy” like Matt. (He is btw)
(Should I do a part 2?)

This is kinda random, but what is your top 10 favorite otps?
Sure.
#1 of All Time SPUFFY
Tumblr media
Spuffy, it wrote the book on both beauty and the beast archetypes, and enemies to lovers. For me the most important thing in a ship is the character development it brings about. Spike's redemption doesn't work without Buffy, because it's meeting the one person who expects better than him and won't put up with his selfish crap, that forces his character arc. Buffy's development is also nothing without Spike, it's meeting Spike that makes Buffy confront her dark side, and realize that being a good person isn't something you are, but something you work towards for the sake of your loved ones. The ideal ship should inspire this permanent character development and chane (Unless it ends tragically), they should be an inseperable part of each other's character arcs.
#2 Kumagawa / Ajimu
Tumblr media
This is what I was talking about when I said "unless it ends tragically". Sometimes you ship two people who should never end up together, because they probably won't accept their differences. However, even in a failed relationship, two people can be important to each other. There's not really a hapyp ending for Ajimu and Kumagawa, despite their similiarities when they're together they just seem to make each other worse. In Medaka Box they are the anti-Zenkichi and Medaka. However, for Ajimu Kumagawa represents her only human connection, and for Kumagawa Ajimu represents the first person to be "good" to him even though their relationship soured at one point. Therefore I find the ship interesting because despite the fact that they are permanently separated they are still an incredibly important part of each other's identities and who they are now.
# 3 Matsuda / Junko
Tumblr media
Basically for the same reason as what I said above. There is no universe where Junko and Matsuda end up in a happy relationship, as long as Junko is still Junko. However, Matsuda and DanganRonpa Zero as a whole add so much to Junko as a character. As long as Matsuda exists, Junko's more than just a black hole that only cares about despair, and I think together the side materials like IF and Zero show that Junko actually is capable of caring for people outside of her natural tendency to want to throw everything into despair, however, humanizing Junko in this manner doesn't actually make her a better person. She can have feelings like romantic, and familial love, and she still chooses to destroy those things and the people in her life. It just adds so much to Junko as a character, which is what I like ships as, an extension of characterization through character interaction.
#5 UIHAI
Tumblr media
I love Ui and Hairu because it's like a broken fairy tale. It was a love that could have saved Hairu, but it didn't, because for Ui he always realized his feelings too late to save anyone. Hairu was obsessively chasing after Arima for the smallest amount of approval, when Ui was right there, and already in love with her. They seem like the perfect couple that could never get together, because Hairu is too fixated on Arima, and Ui is too fixated on his job. They are perfectly suited to giving each other what they wanted, and even in lots of side materials and sketches they seem like a pair, or Ui's feelings for Hairu come across as pretty clear but it never came to be in canon.
#6 ZACK / AERITH
Tumblr media
Once again for the same reasons as above, it seems like a fairy tale romance of a knight, and a girl he wants to protect, but it fails completely to live up to that story. Zack and Aerith is a tragic story of first love for both of them, and it's also really formative for who Aerith is now as a character. Zack tried to be there for her, and he tried to be a hero to Aerith, only to very consistently not be there for her, and then disappear from her life all together. Much later on, Aerith is incredibly isilated, unable to fall in love with the real cloud without projecting Zack onto him. It's a relationship where in a better world they could have been there for each other, but also the failure of the relationship develops them as much as characters as them getting together might have. Zack and Aerith are one of those relationships that seems ideal on the surface but they are very different people with different wants, Zack wants to be a hero, Aerith just wants to be a person first.
#7 LINK / MIDNA
Tumblr media
The best zelda ship period. Once again the most important part of a ship interaction is the change that both characters inspire in each other. Midna begins not caring about Link at all, never referring to him by name, only seeing him as an object, an old legend, a hero to be used instead of a person. Midna's a manipulative freak, and Link breaks through to her because he actually isn't interested in being the hero of legend, he just wants to save the people closest to him at the village because he feels indebted to them, and Midna inevitably becomes one of those people. Link and Midna's partneship makes the game, because it's Midna who pushes him and makes him into a hero, but it's Link through his unfledging acceptance of her who inspires her to be a person once more, and not just the twilight priness.
#8 Morrigan / Warden from DRAGON AGE ORIGINS
Tumblr media
This and Spuffy are like the only two on this list who actually end up together, so let me just have this. Once again my favorite aspect of a ship is the transformation the relationship brings baout in a character. The warden is a non-character, but for Morrigan herself, her relationship with the warden is what allows her to escape an abusive household, and beyond that decide not to repeat the cycle of abuse with her new family. What made this ship an all time fave was in witch hunt when the Warden gets to ask her what she wants, and she's just completely confused. Even with her mother dead, Morrigan is still a tool of her mother's ambitions, it's still all about her mother wants. It's her love with the warden, either through friendship or romance that awakens Morrigan to the fact she's allowed to exist as a person with wants and needs outside of what her mother wants her to be.
#9 Kaine / Nier
Tumblr media
It's the Most Humanizing Ship Ever Between Two Mass Murderers. As a story, I think Nier is about finding the life, and love, in a story that is ultimately, fatally doomed. Nier only worse and worse as the game goes on but that doesn't mean there was never any love in his life. For every bad thing Nier does, he was not bad to every single person, specifically Kaine, it was Nier's love and belief in her that allows the wounds in her heart to start to heal. As Nier and Nier gets worse, Kaine's own shadow self says, that her feelings in her heart are no longer hatred, or even revenge, there's just a pure white light of love left. In a game where everything only rots, Kaine has healed to the point where she can love again when she never thought it was possible. It's why I like ending D the best, because it's Nier knowing he can never escape his own sins, but he can use his last action to heal Kaine fully all the way and allow her to live on a few more years.
#10 SATOSUGU
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once again, there's no universe where they end up together, and yet still on opposite sides of a conflict they remain each other's closest friends. The most important thing about a ship is the character development it leads to and Gojo would not be who he is today without Suguru. I generally get the sense that Gojo's idea of a good person isn't himself, but rather who Geto used to be before he broke. Gojo actually relied on on Geto for a lot more than he realized, considering it was the one connection he had that seemed to humanize him. Geto provided the chosen one who can do literally anything in the world with his powers, support and guidance. He was the jade, and the foundation of their two person friendship, and then the jade broke.
Gojo and Geto's broken relationship is not only the most emotional thing in the series to me, it's also an incredible part of who they are ten years after the fact. Gojo straight up didn't bother to make friends for ten years later after the fact even though he could have, Geto still told his daughters that Gojo and him were best friends, they just had a fight. He couldn't comperehend in Volume Zero that Gojo would still regard him as a friend after everything that they had done.
It's like one of those "Can't live with them, can't live without them" pairs. They want to be each other's one and only but it just won't work because they don't understand each other, and neither of them is willing to compromise. They are also each other's perfect yin / yang complement. Gojo is the opposite of Geto, and still carries a part of Geto within him, and Geto even after becoming the enemy of the sorcery world while Gojo is the savior, still carries that friendship with Gojo inside of him as well. While their relationship is a failed one, it's also a past I hope that the next generation Megumi and Itadori both learn from, even if Geto never truly comes back.

YOU'RE AN AVENGER, A DEATH ANGEL. YOU KILL PEOPLE WHO ASK FOR IT, WHO DESERVE TO DIE. YOU'RE A WATCHDOG, A PROTECTOR OF THINGS DECENT. YOUR COMFORTS ARE SACRIFICED FOR EFFICIENCY -- YOU CAN'T DO WHAT HAS TO BE DONE WITH PEOPLE MOANING AND CLINGING TO YOU, YOU CAN'T STRIKE WITH POSSESSIONS WEIGHING YOU DOWN. YOU HAVE A CLEAR HEAD AND NO REGRETS. YOU CAN TAKE OUT ANYONE BECAUSE YOU'RE STRIPPED DOWN AND YOU DON'T DEPEND ON OR TRUST A SOUL. YOU ARE EFFECTIVE BECAUSE YOU DON'T LOVE ANYBODY OR ANYTHING. YOU'RE A ONE- MAN FORCE, THE PERFECT INSTRUMENT OF DESTINY.
– "INFLAMMATORY ESSAYS 5" by Jenny Holzer
(this is a companion piece to Love and Belonging, my early drama light analysis! [LINK] i heavily recommend reading it before continuing this analysis, as i reference events and ideas explained in that post.)
in my previous analysis of drama light, i focused on the events that led him to become the man we see in the beginning of the drama: a gentle, kind man who is underachieving but still brilliant, who takes a maternal role in his household after the death of his mother. This is all crucial to understanding Light’s character in the drama and how the events leading up to him becoming Kira change in line with his altered characterization, but that analysis only barely skimmed the surface of Light’s character development throughout the drama, and especially after L’s death.
the drama fandom--including me!--is somewhat guilty of making blanket statements about drama light’s morality as opposed to his manga counterpart, that drama light is kinder and gentler in comparison to manga light. this may be true early on, but i would argue that as the series progresses, drama light willingly and deliberately throws away his love and humanity just as much--if not more!--than his manga counterpart.
to understand what i mean it’s important to compare light’s relationship with his father between the adaptations.
in the manga, light grows up idolizing his father, loving and admiring him and wanting to follow in his footsteps as a police officer. his morality that leads to him ultimately becoming Kira comes from Soichiro, as does his dissatisfaction with the world as he sees his father work himself to the bone trying to eradicate crime that seems to never end.
there’s a lot more that can be said about the nature of their relationship and about how Light desperately seeks his father’s approval, but instead of typing out an entire analysis i’ll link you to this post by tumblr user mikami [LINK], which is a very good analysis of the two of them in the manga.
conversely, in the drama Light begins much the same, but Soichiro choosing to chase a criminal instead of being by his wife’s deathbed--leaving his children to witness their mother’s passing alone--strains Light’s relationship with him. Light has much of the same morals and worldview as manga Light, but now believes that his father’s morality is more or less worthless, since he had to give up his family to pursue justice.
Light: When my mother died when I was a kid, my father was off chasing a criminal… I thought my father’s form of justice couldn’t be worth much, if he had to sacrifice even his family to see it through.
– Episode 7
however, it’s important to note that while Light is cold with his father and resents his occupation, that does not mean that Light does not still love and idolize his father. he wants his father’s love and support, and he cares as deeply for him as does his manga counterpart. in fact, drama light only becomes kira out of a desire to protect his father--after his first, accidental murder, he throws away the Death Note and tries to forget about it. however, his father is taken hostage by a criminal who intends on seeking revenge for Soichiro putting him in jail years ago, and Light is forced to retrieve the note and write the criminal’s name to protect his father.
Tumblr media
[photo: a zoomed in shot of the Death Note. Light is writing the name “Otoharada Kuro” in Japanese. the penmanship is shaky and nearly illegible from how hard Light’s hand is trembling.]
– Episode 1
Light is literally shaking with terror as he writes the name of the man about to kill his father.
and this is not something Light does lightly--after he saves his father and it’s announced that Otoharada is dead, Light is absolutely stricken with guilt and horror for murdering two people, including the man who was about to kill his father. he saved his father’s life at the price of another, because he loves his father--and his entire family--very deeply.
it’s also worth noting a slight difference between the manga and the drama; after the mock execution, drama Soichiro admits that he believed Light could be guilty and was prepared to die. Light--who at this point has no memory of being Kira and thus completely believes himself to be wrongly accused--does not blame his father for not trusting him. Light, who desperately wants his father’s approval, does not blame him in the slightest: instead, the subject of his anger is Kira himself for putting Soichiro in this position and making Soichiro suffer.
Light: I… I hate Kira. Kira, who made you suffer this way… I hate him so much. Soichiro: Light… Light: Please catch him. I believe that you can catch Kira, Dad.
Tumblr media
[photo: Light and Soichiro in an abandoned parking garage. the two of them are crouching beside Soichiro’s car. Soichiro is hugging Light, who weakly raises his hands to hold his father in return.]
– Episode 6
the two of them embrace and weep before collecting themselves and returning to Countermeasures.
by this point in the story, it’s obvious that both versions of Light love Soichiro very much. Light is creating his “new world” for the good of humanity but also for the people he loves the most--his family.
later, the emotional death of manga Light comes after the passing of his father, which he never wanted nor planned for. he never wanted Soichiro to be in a position to get hurt and he is never, ever the same after Soichiro's death, especially because he never gains his father’s approval for his actions as Kira--in fact, Soichiro leaves him with an outright rejection of Kira entirely.
Tumblr media
[panel 1: a close up of Soichiro’s eye. he looks like he’s in pain. the speech bubble above his head reads, “I still have the eyes. And according to that Shinigami… Ryuk, I can’t see the lifespan of someone who owns a notebook.
panel 2: Light is standing above his father’s prone body. Matsuda stands behind him, bandages on his face and arms. Soichiro continues, “Light, you’re not Kira… I’m so glad…” Light looks shocked in response, a speech bubble above his head reading only “!” Matsuda says, “O-of course he isn’t! You were still worried about that?"]
the fact that Light can never gain that approval leads to him becoming incredibly dissatisfied and simply going through the motions--it’s what leads to him treating other people like cogs in a machine that will listen to him without any free will of their own, which is what makes him not foresee that Mikami might take action of his own accord. this is how Light gets caught in the end.
in the drama, however, Light experiences more than just his father’s rejection. Soichiro confronts Light directly about being Kira, catching him in the act. this is, of course, Light’s worst case scenario--he does virtually everything he can to lie his way out of it, to get his father back on his side, but fails. Soichiro acknowledges the fact that it was his fault that Light turned out this way, and also that he failed to notice that Light was suffering up until now--and then begs Light to turn himself in, in a scene that echoes L’s confrontation with Light from a couple of episodes prior.
when Light refuses, Soichiro begins to write his own name in the book.
Light: No way. Dad… Stop it. Dad! Stop it! Dad! Soichiro: There’s a struggle going on in your soul right now, isn’t there? That’s what it means to take someone’s life. That’s the weight of a human life. Do you understand, Light? Light: If this suffering is the real thing, I really can’t forgive criminals. I realized it, Dad. Even someone like me… There’s something even I can do to serve the world. Soichiro: How does killing people serve the world?! Light: I’ve sacrificed a lot of things, too! You of all people must understand how I feel! We’re working for the same thing. To protect the peace for everyone. With that notebook, I can create a world without crime! I’m just like you! Soichiro: You’re wrong. Open your eyes, Light. Come back, Light.
– Episode 10
with this ultimate rejection of Light’s actions, Soichiro finishes writing his name and Light allows him to do so. it isn’t as though Light couldn’t have stopped him if he really wanted to, either; on one level, turning himself into the police as Soichiro requested would have saved his father. on another, we see him rip the Death Note from Soichiro’s dying hands moments later as his father attempts to burn the book. Light is perfectly capable of saving the book and only acts when the Note is in danger, not his beloved family member.
of course, we never see manga Light exactly in this position, either, and I can’t say that I think that manga Light would have turned himself in or physically ripped the Note from Soichiro’s hands. both Lights did virtually everything they could to never be in a situation where they had to choose between the safety of their family members and being Kira, and I doubt manga Light would have done well emotionally with Soichiro outright rejecting him, his actions, and his ideology.
however, their actions and behavior immediately after Soichiro’s death is extremely telling. when manga Light is rejected by his father, who died as a result of a plan gone awry, he is completely devastated.
Tumblr media
[photo: a panel of Light Yagami screaming over his father’s body. tears are running down his face, and he yells, “Dad! Dad! Don’t you die, damn it!”]
he sheds tears--which are rare for manga Light--and he mourns over his father’s dead body for quite some time. as i said previously, he is never the same man again after his father’s death.
drama Light sheds tears as Soichiro writes his name and is clearly upset by his passing, but his mourning period is immediately interrupted by desperation to get the Note back. he spends Soichiro’s last moments wrestling with him for the Note, and once his father collapses he takes the note, wild-eyed, and holds it to his chest protectively. in this instant, he cares more about the safety of the book than his dead parent--because he had just chosen the notebook, and being Kira, over his father.
after Soichiro’s funeral, Light thinks this:
Light [internally]: Dad really did open my eyes. If I am to become a God, sacrifices are inevitable. No matter who it is that pursues Kira, I will erase them.
– Episode 10
this is Light implicitly saying that sacrificing his family members--sacrificing Soichiro, the man he began killing in order to save--is inevitable if they oppose Kira. of course, this is very similar to the way that manga Light distances himself from Soichiro after Soichiro’s death, to save him from the hurting that it caused him.
Tumblr media
[photo: a panel of Light Yagami’s face, zoomed in close so we can only see one eye, his nose, and most of his mouth. He is scowling, most of his eye cast in shadow, and he’s sweating and panting. He asks, “Dad? Are you talking about Soichiro Yagami?”]
of course, all of this begs the question of how drama Light--who began a sweet, gentle boy who was more or less coerced into using the Death Note to begin with--got to a place that even manga Light didn’t have the chance to get to, where he was more willing to save the Death Note than his own father. it’s important to consider another relationship that drama Light has that’s much different from manga Light’s--his relationship to L.
manga light respects L's intelligence and sees him as an equal, as entertainment at times, but he doesn’t like him. not even during yotsuba arc, where they’re ostensibly on the same side--in fact, i would say yotsuba Light has more reason to dislike L, seeing as though he believes L to be falsely accusing him and having tortured him for virtually no reason. they're not actually friends--it’s a manipulation tactic. moreover, L sees him the same way. they were not friends and they both intended on killing each other until the bitter end.
by comparison, drama light and L's relationship starts that way--with the two of them wanting to kill each other, with a pretense of friendship that is actually an excuse to get close to each other to try and test for weaknesses--but the difference is that they, well, fall for their own bullshit. during yotsuba arc, Light’s memories are rewritten in such a way that he believes that L and light are genuinely on friendly terms, and L finds himself over the course of the arc going from respecting Light’s talents and thinking him as something interesting to genuinely wanting him to not be Kira and seeing him as a friend.
if you want to know more about L’s thought processes during the series and specifically the blue scene I recommend reading my analysis about him [LINK] but what is important to note is that L does not want to kill Light anymore by the time episode 8 rolls around. like Soichiro later will, he attempts to convince Light to confess--with the intention, we later find out, to potentially give him a way out. of course, Light doesn’t understand this and believes, for the moment, that it’s a fight to the death--so he writes L’s name in (what he believes to be) the Death Note.
this is intrinsically different from the way Light kills L in the manga. manga Light convinces someone else to do the dirty work and he is absolutely gleeful when L dies, gloating over his dying body--but up until this point L has made manga Light’s life an absolute hassle and expressed time and time again that he intends on executing Kira, who he believes to be Light. L wants to kill him, and they are not friends. while drama Light also believes it’s a “me-or-him” situation, he cannot deny that he actually likes L, that he wanted to be friends with him--he wanted, like Soichiro, for L to accept him and to be a part of the world Kira would create.
Tumblr media
[photo: Light, cast in blue light, is bent over double. we’re looking at his face from below, from L’s point of view on the floor. his face is contorted with grief, face wet with tears and spit. He says, “I’d have wanted to be your friend forever.”]
– Episode 8
these are what Light believes to be his last words to L, so he has no reason to lie. he’s weeping as he says it, seeming absolutely heartbroken. this is the first time that Light kills--or attempts to kill--someone he cares about, and it’s the moment he decides to throw his humanity away. if he hadn’t cared so deeply for L before deciding to kill him, I don’t think the scene with Soichiro would have played out quite the same. Light even says it himself right before he writes L’s name:
Light: I can’t afford to lose to you. I’m creating a perfect world, without crime. To see that happen, I… L: Light… Light: I… I’ve decided there’s nothing I won’t do!
– Episode 8
these words are immediately followed by Light attempting to kill L. this is the fundamental moment that Light throws away his humanity, literally deciding that he would do anything for his new world, including killing his friends if they stand in his way. this culminates in him letting his father die and ripping the Note from his hands. he believes that the ends justify the means and that this is the only option he has.
it’s important to note that it isn’t that Light stopped loving his father, or stopped liking L--it isn’t that he lacks guilt over their deaths. it’s exactly the opposite. while their deaths--and the deaths of the Countermeasures team that he planned to take place, as well as the FBI and countless other people--are a necessary evil in order to make the world a better place, Light has to absolutely jump through hoops to justify it to himself and compartmentalize the guilt. as I said earlier, Light saying that Soichiro’s death was inevitable is a way to distance himself from the pain and guilt and rejection he feels, but as he’s dying that guilt cracks back open wide. when he sees that the Death Note is on fire, he panics and begins crawling towards it.
Light: Not yet. I can still do more. If I give up now… What was it all for?
– Episode 11
this is immediately followed by a flashback to Soichiro’s death, where Soichiro questions him about how killing people serves the world--after he crawls a little further, he flashes back again to L, recalling L’s desire to be friends with him.
these flashbacks go to show that Light feels a deep and profound guilt for killing both of them. he’s justified and rationalized it to himself as being for the good of the world--he chose being Kira over both of their lives. however, this means that if Kira fails, if he dies and the world goes right back to the way it was, then all of it was for nothing. he gets himself into a situation where he has to keep killing and killing people he cares about because if he stops then it means that all of it was for nothing.
it’s honestly an incredibly sad situation, that someone so full of kindness would become ultimately cold-hearted in an effort to cope with guilt.

Do you have any lawryght headcanons?
@greenpactbosmer Thanks for the ask!
Headcanons... ooh boy, well...
(Oh and I saw you had another ask there too but I think I may have misunderstood the prompt/what was being asked? In any case I should probablt edit the paragraphs of brain vomit that came out of that but until then here's more paragraphs of brain vomit, uh... sorry 😔)
Anyway...
Headcanons for lawryght can vary greatly from fic verse to fic verse but let's see curtent HC generally...
These three getting together in a canon-like universe...
The RyukxLight will either be established relationship or at the very least Ryuk is more helpful to Light and his plans than in canon to the point Light feels secure enough in his position so he can give L a chance and not feel like he has to kill him immediately so a relationship could actually develop between Light and L beyond "oh no, he's hot... I still have to kill him." (Also expect Light to be even more arrogant and insufferable because he thinks he's immortal and has the power of deathgod and anime on his side.)
Ryuk and Light getting together: And then they were roommates (oh my they were roommates) and there was only one bed--Shinigami don't really need to sleep but Light doesn't know that and the bed is comfy so Ryuk doesn't fell the need to tell him.
They are both extremely bored. Ryuk is absolutely fascinated with this human--he may not be on Light's side (or so he claims) but the entertainment value is beyond his wildest dreams. He is smitten, even if he doesn't admit it. If Light is curious about something hell try at least once... Or Light may be trying to get free Shinigami eyes out of him and they catch feelings.
L enters the picture... Ryuk doesn't mind sharing 1. Hes immortal and bored and... two interesting humans! This is so cool! 2. Shinigami don't have the same ideas about monogamy. 3. Headcanons about Ryuk vary depending on if rule 36 valid up to this point in the ficverse. (I.e. Chad!Ryuk vs. Virgin!Ryuk)
L and Ryuk--L is very disturbed to learn that his case actually has a supernatural component and is more leery of Ryuk than of Light at first. This lasts for all of the moment it takes to remember that Light is Kira and Ryuk is afraid of tennis balls.
After 5 minutes of soul searching, L can admit to himself he has a thing for monsters--both internal and external.
Assuming they are all alive and this takes place in early canon this shippable version of L is probably more interested in having fun then bringing Kira to justice. Either that or he has become disillusioned with the status quo or hurt and and wants revenge to the point that he's willing to entertain Light's way of doing things.
If its post series, maybe Ryuk is bored so goes looking for Light in Mu and ends up pulling both Light and L out of Mu because their souls are intertwined and once restored as humans or Shinigami or something shippable in the afterlife then it's just learning to rely on each other as they forge a new arrangement in the Shinigami realm.
Top/bottom it's not assigned seating Regardless of bedroom positions or what arrangement they have out of the bedroom Light is the dom/one in charge of this arrangement in bed... but subs L and Ryuk unionize and gang up on him. Light is a dom in bed but not always a top. L as a sub but not always bottom. Ryuk as a service top or power bottom. Ryuk doesn't really feel pain like humans do and will go with whatever he and his partners find interesting.
Contrary to rumor Light and L aren't always fighting over who gets to top. Fighting is for chess matches, clashes of ideology, and the last chocolate eclaire--not the bedroom. Consent, safe words, and mutual respect are all very important.
(The safe word is vegetables)
Light is very dom. In every relationship before or since. Except there's Ryuk, looming over him. Making him feel kinda excited and confused and then theres that stupid sexy voice of his... But ryuk is the exception. (But he might let L fuck him if he asks nicely and submits to Kira's reign.)
When they sleep together Ryuk likes to keep them both wrapped in his wings. He likes being the little spoon sometimes though...
L gets Ryuk addicted to apple desserts.
Light frequently ends up cleaning up after the other two. Ryuk helps when he remembers but typically L is a brat.
Light: How can you stand to live like this?
Ryuk: I was formed in a dustbowl.
Light: Yes, it shows.
L [throwing candy wrappers on the ground]: Why are you doing that, that's what Watari is for?
Others who might potentially join the polycule under the right set of circumstances: B, Mikami, Aiber, Matsuda...
Some very noncanon AU ideas...
Superhero aus (current wips)
Winning and ruling the world(s) au (current wips)
Light gets in trouble (of either a mundane or supernatural variety) and Ryuk goes to L to ask for his help because he's the only human he can think of who would be clever enough to help Light and because of supernatural restrictions Ryuk can't save Light by himself. L is annoyed to have his fun ruined by having it confirmed that Light is Kira in this way, pissed that Light could get himself into a situation like this, and also pissed at himself that Ryuk doesn't even need to threaten him to want to risk everything to save him. After they save Light, L decides there's no point in continuing the kira case because it no longer interests him. He returns INTERPOLs money and after Light recovers from his ordeal the three go on vacation looking for something interesting but less hazardous than their previous ordeal. L becomes fascinated with the supernatural and wants to go ghost and cryptid hunting, seeking out ancient mysteries and Ryuk has plenty of leads in that. Light is still more interested in becoming god of the new world but "fine, if you guys insist..." (he doesn't want to admit he's having fun too). They drive around in L's pink crepe van huntjng ghosts, solving mysteries. Light occasionally writes the names of murderous jerks and people who are assholes to L thst they meet along the way while Ryuk laughs and L scowls in a mildly disapproving way but never really discourages him.
Au inverting the dynamics so its established relationship of lawlight first and then Ryuk joins the polycule: AU where Light and L are the same age and are childhood friends and when Light finds the Death Note they become Kira together. Ryuk is fascinated by them both and slowburn they realize their feelings for each other.
Or... Human!Ryuk and mundane college AU Ryuk is in a metal band and is probably studying art and helps rival law students Ligtt and L to chill... at least until Ryuk gets in trouble for drug possession and then Light and L compete to be his better defense counsel.
Monster AU werewolf or vampire au that's canon adjacent--Ryuk bites Light, Light goes on to monster better than Ryuk does then Light bites L, the monster hunter who falls for him...
7. Haunted house au
8. The quarantine au--Light is annoyed because now killing as Kira feels rather pointless. L is annoyed because this is boring. Ryuk is having a blast because they're playing with him a whole lot more. If L and Light doesn't just use the L screen, Ryuk is always in the background, having floating, juggling apples photobomb the zoom calls.
And suddenly Ryuk is important.
Ryuk runs errand for them because he has no danger of catching the plague. They play video games, watch movies, bitch at each other, and get into pointless arguments over stupid things.
Also L makes them custom masks modeled after Ryuk's fangs just because.
Other ideas:
Wammys house and lawryght
Option 1: Wammy's house tooth rotting fluff, adopting all the orphans
Option 2: Wammy's house evil, B was right. It's really just about being raised as a weapon. It's like the stormtrooper program for genius orphans that may not have actually been orphans before the institute took an interest in them.
Option 3: Wammy's house complicated. The institute really is trying to do better, is the best place for the kids and while not perfect its closest thing to home/family they have.
Lawryght and Morality
These 3 can be awful enablers of each other's worst qualities. Then again...
Light: Huh, Ryuk thinks we're going too far. Maybe we should rethink this.
L [already has the prisoner tied up and being forced to listen to polka music on repeat]: But where's the fun in that?
Finding a home together
With Kira and a Shinigami as his boyfriend L feels secure enough to do more normal things he's been denied all his life.
With Ryuks help, Light finds the names of all of L's major enemies and gets to writing in the Death Note.
Light: Be mad if you want. I'm not sorry.
L tries to be mad, and fails. He can't help but feel relieved that they're gone.
He might even entertain the thought of having a permanent address.
He still enjoys traveling though.
Also L gets a kitten
The cat loves chasing Ryuk's feathers.
The cat likes Light's lap the best because Light went out of his way not to look at the cat.
....
Ah, that was probably way too long. But thanks for letting me ramble! 😆

I have a headcanon why Junko chan loves despair when she was younger she was homeless and her and Mukuro Chan’s parents had a divorced that’s why their last names are different and she start get depressed and the more she got depressed the more she got crazy that’s why she loves despair sorry it’s not the best headcanon
Oh, I have a really deep headcanon/theory as to why Junko loves despair, since they never bother to give us any fucking motives for her in the game.
I think Junko and Mukuro have different last names because 'Junko Enoshima' is a stage name. I mean, most musicians and celebrities and models choose different names when they get big. Ikusaba is Junko's real last name, and who knows if her first name is the same or not? I definitely think it's possible that Junko Enoshima is a stage name. She may even have had it officially changed by law so that it shows that way on official Hope's Peak documents. (And knowing that trend, I'm squinting at Sayaka Maizono's name).
But the divorce thing is plausible too. That's another theory I had for their names, that her parents split and Junko took one last name and Mukuro took the other. I headcanon that Junko was close to her mother and Mukuro was close to their father (or at least wanted to please him), and a divorce would definitely fit with that. One went with one parent, and the other went with the other. Junko became more 'girly' from being close to their mother and Mukuro became a tough soldier from trying to please their father. I could see either one. Or maybe both?
As for Junko becoming obsessed with despair...I have a pretty wild theory about this, but it's supported by some evidence from the games.
Okay, so, first of all: Disregard the anime. The anime is wrong. The anime goes against established game canon. I am not acknowledging the anime in my theories.
Remember how Izuru killed the Student Council? In the second game, we learn that the student council murders and the Kamukura Project are what started the tragedy, not Junko. She just piggybacked off those concepts to turn the grief and anger onto Hope's Peak. That's canon. She used the kidnap of and experimentation on Hajime Hinata to turn the Reserve Course against ultimates, and the cover-up of the Student Council murders to turn civilians and ultimates against Hope's Peak. That much is canon.
In the first game, we find the room where the student council was massacred. (This is the only time in the games when blood is shown red and not pink, by the way.) We find that and it says 'an eye for an eye' in blood on the wall. Presumably written by Izuru, since it was his vengeful murder spree. (Also they replaced his eyes in the KP, so...It fits). Anyway, Monokuma comes into this room, and Makoto starts demanding answers from him as to what happened there. Monokuma, who is Junko's voice throughout the game, says "What? Am I being blamed for this again? I have no idea what happened in this room!" And reiterates that he had nothing to do with it. That's canon. It's canon that Junko had nothing to do with the student council murders.
Jin Kirigiri, Kyoko's father, was headmaster of the school. He was kind of a douchebag. That's canon too. Junko had a special revenge-boner for him, since she made him a special execution at the beginning of the game. That's also canon. Throughout Hope's Peak in the first game, we see little drawings and comics on the blackboards. One of those comics shows Makoto and Kyoko looking away from Monokuma doing something, or holding someone down? I can't remember exactly. And Makoto says something like "I can't see" or "don't look at it". Something like that. I can't remember it exactly, but that's the gist of it. (I wasn't really paying attention to the comics on the blackboard when I played through the first time).
And the last important piece of canon evidence I have: Makoto's execution. As we all know, Junko and Kyoko both admit that the execution Makoto got was actually meant for Kyoko. Junko was trying to get her killed before she learned the truth. That trial was supposed to kill her, but Makoto jumped in and took the bullet for her. So the execution that Makoto got was really aimed at Kyoko Kirigiri, who is Jin Kirigiri's daughter. The execution is entitled 'After School Lesson' and shows a blackboard depicting sperm going into an egg and other sexual shit.
So, based on all this evidence, I came up with a solid theory for why Junko got obsessed with despair.
First of all, she had something going on with Jin Kirigiri. Either she hit on him, or he hit on her, or they actually slept together, or maybe there was even a pregnancy scare. Depending on how you want to look at Jin, you could say this was one-sided from Junko's end or even that Jin initiated it first. I think Jin is a scoundrel, so I'm going with the idea that Junko approached him first but he definitely reciprocated. That's where 'After School Lesson' comes from. The execution made by Junko specifically for Jin's daughter. It's also part of where Junko gets her revenge-fixation on him. Jin's execution is even him fucking around with a rocket until it explodes, which could be a pretty big innuendo.
Then, the Student Council murders happened. Junko wasn't involved and didn't witness it, which is canon. But, maybe she could have walked by at the very end, and seen Izuru surrounded by corpses and covered in blood. She thought he was going to kill her and she felt her first jolt of real despair. That's all speculation, but I still like the idea of it. It needs to start and end with Izuru, having Hope's Peak be brought down by their own pride and hubris, not by some random chick who's obsessed with a nebulous concept for no reason.
Anyway, Junko didn't witness or start the student council murders. Whether you take my idea that she saw Izuru or not, it doesn't matter. The murders happened and Hope's Peak immediately tried to cover them up, which is canon. They didn't want the KP coming to light, and they didn't want their glorious creation to fail, or to be seen as their failure in the media.
So, they needed a scapegoat. They needed someone to take the blame. Maybe someone who Jin Kirigiri was tired of, needed to get rid of, needed to discredit and keep quiet because he had an inappropriate relationship with her. Or at the very least, she was insisting that. (And if you bring the pregnancy scare into play, it looks darker...) So Hope's Peak, at Jin Kirigiri's discretion, blamed Junko for the student council murders. Or at least for the disappearances of those students, if Hope's Peak wouldn't fess up to the full-on massacre. That's why Monokuma says "I'm being blamed again?" in the student council room. They expelled her and ended her entire career. She had no future and she lost everything, plus was facing some serious legal consequences for murders she didn't commit. That would make her feel despair. And it would make her hate Hope's Peak, and hate the hope that it supposedly stood for, and believe that despair always came along with hope.
She would've felt particularly vengeful towards Jin, seeing it as his fault, and a betrayal between their relationship. She would've hated his daughter for that. Maybe she even thought Kyoko and Makoto knew something about her and Jin, or about the KP, or just the fact that she didn't kill the student council, and those two never spoke up about it. They never defended her. No one in her class did. Which she would also see as a betrayal.
So in order to get revenge, bring down Hope's Peak, and save her career, she spilled the beans about the Kamukura Project and the Student Council Murders and started the Tragedy. I like to think that she knew about Izuru and the Kamukura Project (which was strictly and fiercely kept secret from all students, sorry Yasuke Matsuda fans) because she saw him when he killed the student council. But if she got framed for the murders, it's entirely possible that she could also have found that stuff out from the people who framed her. She knew she didn't kill the student council and something was going on. Maybe she even had Kyoko look into it for her, and Kyoko found out everything but wouldn't defend her for fear of bringing down Hope's Peak/her father. Who knows?
Anyway, that's my theory, based on the small stuff that I picked up from the game. It was a joke at first, but as time went on, it seemed more and more plausible. I prefer to think of Junko with this backstory, instead of the horrible nothing backstory that the game gives her. This one makes her a better character with a lot more depth. Even if it's not canon, I'm keeping my theory. But I think it's not impossible either. I base it all off of canon facts and hints.

my high hopes (are getting low)
3.9k words [total 13k words] (part one) (part two) (part three) | AO3 Link | warnings: homophobia, use of slurs, dubious morality, completely unnecessary religious references, implied/referenced self-harm
'Cause my High hopes are getting low because these people are so old The way they think about it all If I tried I would never know
Light Yagami's world view is shifted after a conversation with his father concerning L's sexuality. Anger in his veins and unconfessed feelings bubbling to the surface, Light and L enact a plan of revenge against the homophobic views of the task force.
~
Out of the task force headquarters for the first time in months brought him a certain amount of joy, an extreme weight of his chest- or rather weight off his wrist. With his memories back, himself and Misa cleared of any suspicions thanks to the fake rules he constructed in the Death Note, Light had won.
Of course, there was still much work that needed to be done. This roadblock had lasted longer than Light wanted or anticipated, but no matter. To achieve everything the world needed was going to take time and effort- time and effort that he alone could commit to. He needed to be rid of L as well. Foolish, stupid Misa forgot his name, so that was simply another obstacle he would need to pass. But no matter, tonight was for celebration.
The celebration at a bar only miles away from task force headquarters is not exactly where he would have chosen, but Ryuzaki insisted that if the task force were going out into the public to to celebrate they were to not stray far from headquarters. Light idly looked around the lowlights of the bar, shaking his head into his beer. He wouldn’t be surprised if L had every shop within a 5 mile radius littered with cameras and bugs.
“Attention everyone,” Soichiro stood up, hold his glass out to the detectives, “I would like to make a toast: this is to all your hard work, the long hours, the uncertainty of tomorrow, the progress we made, and-” He pointedly looked at Light , “To the clearing of names.” He raised his glass, “To Light!”
“To Light!” The detective’s echoed, Matsuda softly clapping, and Aizawa giving him a sock to the arm.
“How’s it feel to be a free man?” His father asked, eyes shining behind his glasses.
Light chuckled, “Father, this is the best I have felt in a long time,”
“Here, here!” Mogi agreed.
“Fresh air, sun on your face,” Matsuda mused, “Boy, that Ryuzaki really doesn’t get out much, does he?”
“Can you imagine him coming out to a bar like this, or even a restaurant or gym?”
“No wonder he is so skinny,”
“And pale,”
Light shook his head, “Hey now, no need for any of that,” He took a quick sip of his beer, “You guys may know him, but I was chained to Ryuzaki, ok? Talk to me when you get kicked in the face by him,” The table roared with laughter, Light smirked to himself. “Might just get a kick of PTSD when I eventually do get to cuff Kira,”
Soichiro shook his head, smiling, “We are closer than ever, I can feel it. The real Kira is in our grasp, now that we are all cleared,”
Light huffed dryly, “Well, some of us aren’t fully in the clear,”
Soichiro sighed, resting his chin in the palm of his hand. Light looked into his father’s eyes: determination but exhaustion were swimming behind his pupils- Light hates L for causing his father so much stress. Even the hardest working, most respectable men need time stress free. God himself created a day of rest for a reason.
“Ryuzaki will come around, I am sure of it,” He idly scratched the stubble on his cheek, eyes on Light but mind elsewhere, “I am not exactly sure what more proof he needs… The young man’s pride is getting in the way of his deductive skills,”
“He did say at one point he did want Light to be Kira…” Matsuda chimed it.
“Precisely,” Soichiro took a long drink, “He will come around, I am sure of it. I mean, look at us now. Even a few weeks ago, and outing such as this was completely out of the realm of possibilities,”
“I am more surprised Ryuzaki himself didn’t come with us just to keep tabs on what we are talking about,”
“Matsuda, you are insane if you believe that he wouldn’t find out some way or another,”
“Ahh, yeah. A small part of me wishes Ryuzaki would come out with us, though. I do have to admit that I am mildly curious as to what he would drink,” Matsuda shrugged.
Soichiro grunted, shaking his head, “I am sure each of us wishes that we knew Ryuzaki just a little bit more. We simply have to make our own interpretations based upon the small bits of information and hints he drops us,”
Light nodded, a small smile on his face, “That man would probably be an even longer investigation than the Kira one,”
The table nodded, but Aizawa drummed his finger on the table, “You guys say that, but I already know everything that I need to know about that little freak,”
Aizawa took a long sip of his whiskey, the detective’s eyes narrow and angry. It had been obvious to most of the task force that he never liked Ryuzaki: Aizawa’s short temper and L’s aloofness often clashed, but there also seemed to be something else bubbling under the surface- and itch that needed some sort of external validation to be scratched.
“What do you mean, Aizawa?” Light probed the detective. If he for some reason and somehow got more information about L…
Aizawa looked around, now holding the full attention of the table in the palm of his hand. He rubbed behind his earlobe, his voice sharp and intense, “I was talking with Wedy and Aiber after the arrest of Higuchi. Just idly chatting. I was curious about their history with Ryuzaki. What kind of criminal would endear themselves to the most prolific detective? When did they even get close enough to be on call for him?” Aizawa idly cracked his knuckles, looking down at the stain wood of the table, recounting the events from that night, “It seems as though those two know Ryuzaki better than we do,”
Light’s skin felt as though it was on fire. He had never had much interest in the detective, but his attention was solely focused on Aizawa. Whatever it was, whatever Aizawa found out from the two con-artists, he simply had to know, his need and curiosity were going to burn him alive if the normally straight-forward cop didn’t speak faster.
“What did you find out,” Soichiro frowned, “Like, his history or name or something,”
Light wanted to scream.
Aizawa shook his head, sipping the brown liquid, “No. Nothing like that, just some taboo information that our good friend Ryuzaki opted not to tell us,”
Matsuda frowned, “Taboo?”
“Yeah,” He scoffed, tapping the glass with the palm of his finger- eyes hard and jaw set. His eyes quickly darted from one side of the nearly empty bar to the other, now staring down his whiskey. “Let’s just say,” He spoke in a low voice, “I am certainly glad Ryuzaki doesn’t go to the gym. I would pity any man who had to share a locker room alone with him.” Aizawa threw the rest of his drink down his throat and loudly set the empty glass on the table, the silence thick and palpable.
No one said anything for a long time. No one moved their drinks or spoke. Light looked down at the table, eyes hard, waiting for someone to break the silence; someone had to release him from this torture, and he couldn’t be the one to speak up.
When Soichiro scoffed, picking up his glass, all eyes turned to him, “Well. I can’t say I am surprised,” He grumbled. The rest of the squad nodded in agreement, all going back to their idle actions.
“I mean, I always had my suspicions,” Matsuda said, “He is a pretty weird guy and something always seemed a bit off when we were alone together. I just chalked it up to Ryuzaki being Ryuzaki but now that I know- like I know ...” He shifted uncomfortably in his seat, hand coming up to rub the back of his neck, “Uck… I need to go home and have a shower,”
Soichiro then locked eyes with Light, “Light, if that Ryuzaki ever made a pass at you or made you feel-”
“Father, I promise you everything was fine,” Light muttered, responding to his father but his head was elsewhere, “I never even knew, or considered it a possibility, actually,”
Aizawa frowned, tapping the table harshly with his index finger, “With the chain, when you had to shower, or use the restroom, what did you even-”
“There was a hook in the bathroom, so there was at least some semblance of privacy,” Light opted to keep the fact that there were cameras covering every inch of the bathroom to himself.
Soichiro seemed unsatisfied with that answer, “I was never a fan of that chain situation, none of us were, but we all trusted Ryuzaki. Now- now that I know my son was chained for months on end to some pervert…” He steady his rising voice but Soichiro was gripping his glass so hard, Light was worried it would shatter under his hold.
“It is just wrong,” Aizawa chimed in, Mogi nodding along, unenthusiastically, “Morally, completely wrong.”
“Here, here,” Matsuda echoed, cheerlessly. “Those are the kinds of people Kira should take care of,”
Light’s eyes widened, shaking his head, “Matsuda, don’t talk like that,”
Aizawa shook his head, a short emotionless laugh was followed with an omission from the other detective. “This may just be the whiskey talking, but instead of FBI agents and business men, maybe Kira could work on keeping those kinds of people out of society. I don’t need queers around, I have 2 kids,”
Soichiro nodded, “It is a pity. Can’t imagine how Ryuzaki’s parent’s must feel. Maybe they know and that’s why he is the way he is,”
“Pity the pair of them,”
“Yeah,”
Light said nothing. Soichiro continued, “Glad I don’t have to worry about that. Sayu talks about that Hideki Ryuga on too many occasions to count, and that Ms. Amane is more than treating Light here well,”
Eyes hard set on his Father, Light asked his dad a question that had been on the tip of his tongue since Aizawa’s information had been revealed. “Father, what would you do if-”
Cutting him off, Soichiro looked at Light seriously, “If that happened, I wouldn’t need some magical notebook. I’d take my marksman training and deal with it myself,”
Light smiled, chuckling, “Of course, Father,”
Light’s fingernails were gripping the inside of his palm, the force at which was nearing the point of drawing blood. He was doing his best to remain cool and collected, but the more the men talked the more his anger was becoming all consuming: a threat that was rearing its ugly head and threatening to crawl out of his throat with an ear splitting cry of rage.
“I think I need the restroom,” Light stood up stiffly, 4 pairs of concerned eyes on him. He gave them a curt nod, “Gentlemen,” And walked quickly to the other side of the bar.
The restroom was a unisex single stall that Light opened with more forced then neccesarry and locked the door. He stumbled over to the sink, switching it on the coldest setting. Balling up his fists, he slammed them down onto the dirty ceramic, a frustrated cry erupting from him.
“Son of a bitch!” Light choked out. Neat fingernails gripped the sides of the sink, chilling water splashing and threatening to soak the edges of Light’s expensive button up, but he barely noticed that fact, as he was mentally steeling himself to not allow the hot tears he felt bubbling to spill. Crying in any capacity was wasted energy, and even more so, he didn’t want to have to explain the tear tracks on his cheeks to any of his much older colleagues.
“Geez, you look like a mess,” A gravelly voice phased. Light looked in the mirror in front of him and saw Ryuk’s wide eyes staring back at his reflection.
Light scoffed, looking away from the mirror, “Welcome back, where have you been, Ryuk?”
Ryuk floated closer to the sink, casually wiggling his fingers, “I was nagging some cherries from the bartender. Not as good as apples but I’ll take what I can get,”
“Does fruit even taste different to Shinigamis?”
“Oi oi, what is that supposed to mean,” Ryuk frowned.  Light shrugged his shoulders, sighing. Ryuk put a thumb to his chin, “It is clear I missed something. You going to fill me in, Light?”
For the first time since entering the bathroom, Light felt about 7% calmer. He took a deep breath, studying the brown eyes of his reflection. Still rimmed with red, but not nearly as dam breaking as before. He turned around to face the Shinigami, casually leaning against the sink, arms crossed.
“Aizawa just told me some information,”
“Eh?”
“Information about L,”
Ryuk laughed wildly. Flipping himself upside-down, he continued to cackle, “Isn’t that just interesting. What did he say? Is your plan going to be a little easier?”
Light crossed his arms, refusing to look at Ryuk’s animated movements, and instead inspected a cracked tile in the otherwise pristine floor, “No. Aizawa told me that L is gay,”
“Eh?” Ryuk flipped himself upright and stood on the floor normally, curiously looking at the human, “Well, I suppose that is fine… Though I guess that means it isn’t with you. I didn’t realise that you were uh, what’s the human word for it...” Ryuk scratched his hair, and Light quirked up an eyebrow, “Oh. Didn’t know you were homophonic,”
Light frowned, “What?”
“Homophonic. You don’t like gay people,”
Running a hand through his hair Light sighed, “It is homophobic, not homophonic. Homophonic has to do with music,” Light turned back to the water that was still running and rolled up his sleeves, idly washing his hands, “I didn’t think you would get this much stupider after being away from me for so long,”
Ryuk defensively put his hands up, talking to Light’s reflection, “Hey, don’t look at me. You humans are the weird ones, making up gender and sex and all these words we don’t have in the Shinigami realm. It’s confusing sometimes, ok?” Light didn’t respond as he pulled some paper towels from the holder and dried his hands, “Either way, I didn’t know you were homophobic. Hyuk, probably makes you want to kill L more, doesn’t it,”
Light’s eyes flashed red, and in an instant, he kicked the plastic bin across the room in a blind rage of fury, “Of course it doesn’t!” Dried towels littered the ground, Ryuk slapping one away from himself as it floated onto his shoulder, “But apparently if you don’t fit into the perfect straight mold that we have been told, all morals go out the window!” His back hit the wall, and Light sunk down onto the floor, Ryuk still standing in shock, “All of the detectives out there said that they would want to rid the world of anyone who was different. No matter how hard working, or what they do, or how much they are worth to society, if you don’t fit that mold, you are better off dead. They said they L would be better off dead, that-” He paused, picking at a loose string on his pants, tugging on it and idly throwing it away, “My own father said he would kill me,”
Ryuk stood next to Light in stunned silence, only a couple times before had he seen the man lose his temper and each time he was unsure of how to respond to it. He began picking up the towels littered on the ground, “So, Light, are you saying that you’re…”
Chuckling dryly, Light shook his head, “I thought this kind of thing didn’t matter to Shinigamis?”
“No, but it matters to you humans. Besides, this is very interesting,”
Light rested his head against his knees, staring at the crack in the tile again, “I don’t want to label myself, not really. Like you said, it is a dumb human thing.” Biting his thumbnail, Light thought for a moment about what he wanted to say, “I was about 13 when I realised I couldn’t relate to my friends. I thought I was smarter than them for not caring about kissing girls and spin the bottle. I pretty much wrote off relationships altogether. It wasn’t until Misa that I realised what was wrong,”
“Eh? Misa?”
“Yeah, I know,” A rare smile formed on Light’s face. Rare because he was talking about Misa, someone who he regarded as one of the banes of his existence, “She was rambling on one day, and told me that she also likes girls in the way she likes me. Granted, she immediately went on to say she would never leave me, and we were soulmates, but those words kept me up because I never even realised it was an option.
“I did some research and some of the greatest minds on Earth were also queer in some capacity. Alan Turing, Julius Caesar, Ihara Saikaku- all great people who made waves in history. And yet,” Light made fists with his hands, “Some people, some idiots would believe they were better off dead just because of who they choose to lay with.
“I may have a personal bias, but if the Gods never cared about gender and sex, then why would I when passing judgement? You said it yourself, Ryuk: it is merely a human constructed concept. I am far above viewing people as just that. It is simply an aspect of yourself, not who you are. Your actions are far more important. Be a useful, moral member of society and why does it matter who you sleep with?”
Ryuk finished cleaning up the towels and sat on the floor across from Light, “Heh, and the detectives don’t share that same sentiment?”
“Yeah,” Light’s voice dripped with venom, “They told all of us multiple times to not pass judgement off of one action, and yet my father said he would put a gun to my head and if I kissed a boy he would shoot me dead,”
Ryuk tilted his head to the side, “Guess we finally found the greyness in your morality,” He cackled wildly, but Light was not amused.
Light sat up straight, looking Ryuk straight into his eyes, “I don’t need those kinds of people in my world,” He spoke with finality, and tapped open the secret compartment of his watch, the small corner piece of the Death Note blank and ready for him.
“Light, wait,” Ryuk’s eyes widened and he took a couple steps towards him, towering over Light. He frowned, red anger brewing in his pupils, “I am not supposed to help, not really, but please think, ok? For one, this is your father we are talking about, you can’t-”
“Ryuk, he said he would kill me!” Light stood up and shouted, all care for staying calm left him, “He said I would be better off dead, how am I supposed to take that?”
“Alright,” He responded, the almost 7 foot Shinigami felt very small all the sudden, “What about this? You and the task force leave headquarters for the first time in months. You disappear to the bathroom and all the task force is dead except for you. What conclusion is L going to draw from that, hm?”
Light threw his pen across the room, hitting and marking the wall it connected with, “So what should I do, then, huh? Just let them all walk around, making judgements about those who didn’t do anything?” He made fists with his hands, not paying any attention to pain, fury and rage was all Light felt now. Drops of blood trickled down his palm and under his nails- he finally broke the skin. “They don’t deserve any of that, so why did my father say that? Why do they get to decide what is moral? Where is the justice for them!” His breath got more and more ragged, to the point of hyperventilation. Light suddenly felt very, very dizzy.
When he was a young child, after he just learned how to swim, Light would go off the diving board and teeter at the edge of it, testing gravity. Challenging it. He wanted to fly. He thought he could cheat it somehow. If he ran quick enough, if he closed his eyes, if he acted casual as he stepped off the board, but everytime the wind on his face and the unforgiving coldness of the pool water let him know that Light had failed. Getting the Death Note was the closest he felt to defying gravity. Light could step off the board now and simply float; floating high above the gravity that pulled him down, and high above the water that wanted to engulf him.
However, for the first time since he got the Note, Light was no longer floating: Light was drowning. Gravity was forcing him underwater, suffocating him. It was filling up his lungs and choking him. Is this the grim misfortune that Ryuk said to him? Is this how it feels like to be held underwater- thrashing and crying and begging for the element to relent? To release it’s hold and breathe? Light can’t imagine the real thing feeling any other way.
A knock on the door brought Light back to land. He stayed silent as he listened to the voice outside the door, “Light? You doing ok in here? Your dad is worried about you and…”
Matsuda trailed off. Light paused for a moment, and walked himself to the other side of the bathroom, raising his voice, “Yeah, I am ok. Just, uh, the drink I had before the beer was pretty strong, and I didn’t eat beforehand so, uh, y’know,”
“Oh, are you ok?”
“Yeah,” Light struggled to keep his voice even.
“Something always seemed a bit off when we were alone together…”
“I am all good, Matsuda,”
“Uck… I need to go home and have a shower…”
“I appreciate your concern,”
Matsuda stayed silent for a minute before responding, “We are about to head out. Do you want us to wait or-”
“Go on ahead,” Light responded immediately, “I’ll get Watari to call me a car or something,”
Matsuda sighed, “As long as you are sure, but just let someone know when you get back. I’ll tell Soichiro you aren’t feeling well,”
Light listened to the detective’s retreating footsteps. He closed the lid on the toilet and put his head in his hands, “I want to kill them,” Ryuk cackled wildly, causing Light to look up, “What? Unless you have something helpful to contribute I-”
Ryuk floated, spinning himself above Light, “You could kill them, that is easy. Killing is like breathing to you, Kira,” He laughed again, “But trust me when I say that there are much more creative, much more fun forms of punishment,”
Light’s interest was piqued, he looked at the Shinigami with curiosity, “What exactly are you thinking?”
Shrugging, he began to phase through the wall, “I am not going to tell you what to do, that is all up to you, Light. However-” Ryuk’s head was all that was remaining in the room, a smile even more wicked than his usual one plastered on his face, “-maybe you should talk to your pal, L, about what you learned today,”
Cackling, Ryuk left the room, but Light alone with his thoughts. It didn’t even take 3 minutes for Light to come up with a plan.
