Lebanese Cabbage Salad (Malfouf)

In a large mixing bowl, mix together 450g white cabbage, finely sliced (approximately half a small head of cabbage), 3 spring onions, finely sliced, 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped, a bunch of parsley, finely chopped, a handful mint, finely chopped, 1 tbsp dried mint, 60ml olive oil, 45ml lemon juice, 1 tsp sugar, 1 tbsp zaatar (optional)

Variation: Add in some diced tomatoes.

We were looking for plant-based, healthy food and Zaatar w Zeit had lots of options. It’s also from Lebanon (founded in 1999), with its first location in North America opening in Vancouver. The format is fast casual but confusing. We walked in and saw that we could grab a tray, utensils, and take premade food out of the refrigerated cases (hummus, salads, desserts, drinks). But, you can also order hot food off the menu, including manousheh, freshly baked wraps, all day breakfast items, and fries. Wine and beer are available.

Hummus avocado wrap ($12.49): a long, thin spinach flatbread (it looked like a tortilla) with avocado, hummus, and fresh veggies. I noticed that there wasn’t much filling but Mr. Froyo enjoyed the simplicity

Halloumi pan ($18.99): This was super simple. Slices of halloumi cheese baked in a cast iron pan, fresh tomato slices, fresh mint, Persian cucumber slices, and two thin flatbreads. I’ve had wraps with similar ingredients but they were better and cheaper. The flatbread was very plain (multigrain and spinach). I was hoping they would have zaatar, cheese, tomato, onion, etc.

The interior has a chain like feel and looked clean and bright. The serve ware is compostable, bio-degradable, and recyclable. You can scan the code and order from your table.

The food is a bit too plain. I think they do deserve half a star for making their own flatbreads.
