Levant Bistro + Bake Shop, 2112 Sunset Blvd, Suite JKL, Los Angeles (Echo Park), CA 90026
Levant opened recently; in fact, the Bake Shop area hasn’t opened yet but they carry some baked goods in the bistro area. The owners are Lebanese. I missed the fact that it’s gluten-free till I arrived there. I was surprised there was no bake shop. The dining area also looked very nice…nicer than I expected.
The menu includes mezza, sandwiches served on gluten-free pita, soup, salad, housemade man’oush (flatbreads), and plates (short ribs, fish, shawarma, kafta, spiced chicken, etc.). For baked goods, they had scones, cookies, muffins, and cakes.
Classic hummus ($10) served with a cut up housemade gluten-free pita. This was a small amount of hummus and the hummus was quite sour (too much lemon). The pita wasn’t soft; it was slightly hard. Mr. Froyo said the hummus was sour and had too much lemon.
Tabbouli ($12): Looked wet, parsley heavy with tomatoes, mint, onion, spices, evoo, lemon juice. It didn’t have bulgur because they are a gluten-free eatery. Mr. Froyo said it was too wet and there was too much lemon juice.
Off the grill plate with beef shawarma, Lebanese rice, tabbouli, hummus, beetroot ($18): The shawarma didn’t look like it was sliced off the rotisserie but looked like thin pieces of beef. They were heavy handed with the shawarma spices. The beef was tender so it was good though not shawarma like in texture. The pilaf with almonds was good. But I didn’t like the sour hummus or sour tabbouli. Fortunately, the sweetness of the pureed beets helped. The portion was small and didn’t come with any pita. I didn’t like the pita that came with the hummus, so that wasn’t a big loss.
Levant looks lovely and the food is soy-free, gluten-free, and all natural. They’re located in a strip mall with its own parking but it may be difficult to find parking.

My friend Fourat has just opened a restaurant literally a stones throw from my balcony. Stopped in for a first quick visit and omg it’s fabulous. Lebanese food, full of flavour and textures… as soon as you walk in you are enveloped in the fragrant aroma of all the gorgeous spices. Also beautiful décor designed by Fourat. Review coming soon on Sevilla Tapas.

Wahib’s Mediterranean Express, 264 S Mission Dr, San Gabriel, CA 91776
Wahib’s is a stall inside Blossom Market Hall. I think it’s Lebanese; the colors of the logo are the same as Lebanon’s flag. There is no mention of “halal” on the menu. Choose from appetizers, plates (kebobs, salmon, gyros, falafel, vegan), wraps, fries, soups, salads, and desserts (baklava). Order at the counter and you’ll get a buzzer.
The plates come with rice, salad, grilled vegetables, pita bread, and hummus. Prices are about average or slightly lower than average. The portion seemed a bit smaller (not as much rice given).
Chicken kebob plate ($15.99): one boneless, skinless chicken kebob over basmati rice, grilled roma tomato and pepper, simple green salad, hummus, garlic paste, and one thin pita cut into quarters. The chicken pieces were bigger than usual – very tasty marinade. The rice was very flavorful. The pita was fresh and soft. The mixed green salad had cucumber, tomato, and a light vinaigrette. The hummus was thicker than usual, a little sour, but very good. The garlic paste was strong!
Vegan plate ($13.99): hummus, fried cauliflower, grape leaves (2 dolmas), 2 falafel, garden salad, 1 thin pita, pickles. Mr. Froyo liked it a lot, but he was also very hungry. He liked how the hummus was thick and also had good things to say about the dolmas.
The kebobs are cooked to order, so expect to wait 15 minutes or so. Easy parking. The food hall has ample seating.

What foods are considered haram?
pork, alcohol (not a food but yk), blood, carnivorous animals, insects, and animals that die in any way other than the islamic way of slaughter :D
oh, also, when we slaughter them it has to be in the name of god. if we dont say "in the name of god" or "in the name of allah" or any of his titles, or if we name a god worshipped other than allah (e.g. jesus), then the meat is considered haram
#thats why when me n my family travel to another country we just eat vegan food#unless its in a restaurant owned by muslims yk#like most turkish or lebanese places will have halal meat#also we cant have non vegan gummies or anything like from haribo bc gelatin yk#but in islamic countries like mine those foods are halal bc the gummies for example use gelatin#thats made from cow fat instead of pig fat#ty for the ask <3#islam#islamic#muslim#haram#halal#halal food
