little joys of learning Yiddish: knowing the author of the Tevye stories wrote under a pen name that’s basically “hello” (literally translated “peace upon you”)
in honor of this I shall henceforth be writing under the name Halen Welmet

Has anyone else noticed the weird appropriation of Yiddish for specifically anti-zionist spaces? It makes me deeply uncomfortable.
#its gross#why are you all so fucking weird about jews#why cant you be normal#these same people are like “jews are a diaspora people so thats why we learn yiddish'#without thinking or asking where the diaspora is from#because you cant have a diaspora without a point of origin.....#and then they still deny jews are indigenous to israel#so they dont care about most mizrahi jews who literally live there and have forever#but then they kind of have this weird fascination with yemeni jewish culture#and like exoticize (?) Mizrahi jews#but not if youre from israel then youre immoral and evil

Duolingo, at it again with the incredibly useful phrases that I will no doubt be using frequently in everyday conversation...
Also, why does the bear give me the impression that it sees dead people because it just... killed a bunch of people?

Hey ישראבלר and jumblr! Do any of you speak Yiddish? I'm considering learning it, but I feel like I need a good reason to. It'd be really cool if one of y'all out there knows Yiddish and wants to learn Hebrew, so we could teach each other!
(If you just wanna learn Hebrew and don't know any Yiddish I'd still be glad to be your conversation partner, I'm Israeli and Hebrew is my first language.)
Either way, Shabbat shalom everyone 💙🤍

falsettos in yiddish. that's the post
#UGH BUT CAN HYOU IMAGINE#the commentary on the nuclear family would be on ANOTHER LEVEL#the commentary on JEWISH IDENTITY & MASCULINITY????? so FUCKING rich & complex#& having the lesbians from next door speak english. & having unlikely lovers be in both yiddish and english at the same time. OHHHHHHH#🎶 kvetch kvetch kvetch kvetch modne modne modne modne kvetch kvetch kvetch kvetch kvetch kvetch 🎶#the jokes would be funnier. the sad parts would hit harder. all in all the range of human emotion would be more intense & more moving#because it's carrying thousands of years of trauma and it's carrying it in such a way that physically cannot be ignored or bypassed#it would also be the biggest win for queer jews since like. harvey milk#SOMEONE NEEDS TO DO IT I NEED THIS IN MY LIFE#I'LL LEARN YIDDISH AND TRANSLATE IT MYSELF#falsettos

shana tova! (Did i spell that right? (;;;・_・))
Thank you! Even if you aren't Jewish I wish you a happy new Year and may there be many good things in store for you!
And Yeah there's multiple ways to spell it since it's transliterated from hebrew either shana tova or Shanah Tovah.
if you wanted to use polish transliteration for whatever reason it would be szana towa actually wait sometimes I do that for languages since polish (or I'll use Spanish) is more consistent in spelling than English.
Speaking of, I think I sound like I am speaking Spanish when I speak hebrew. Literally at the synagogue yesterday I was listening to everyone else pray and then my own voice and I was like I really hope no one hears how Spanish I sound.
Perhaps it's that my voice is softer in both Spanish and Hebrew than English but I don't know.
This is from the Jewish community in Kraków
#i speak better Spanish than hebrew or polish lmao#i wanted to learn yiddish but thats hard#i should learn ladino because its similar to spanish#even though im not Sephardi#thank you anon#ראש השנה#asks and replies#anon
