Re-listening to "A Wizard Abroad"; there's a mention of the dewey decimal system number that Nita's wizard's manual camouflages itself as. The camouflage is as a children's book called "So You Want to be A Wizard" and the DD number for it is given as "793.4". I looked that up and it's "793 Indoor games & amusements". Very cool of @dianeduane to include that in a book in 1993; you'd probably have needed to be sitting in your local library to learn that if you were reading at the time of publication. Also: happy 30 years to book which made me look up how to pronounce names from Irish mythology.

Think Paulina teaches Danny Spanish? I imagine to mess with Sam she gets into these talks with Danny that are VERY spicy in front of her. Sam doesn't know what's being said but she sees how Danny reacts and she gets pissed. Tucker might understand Spanish (or at least enough to know what's going on) but refuses to translate because he doesn't wanna see what Sam would do. XD

I definitely think Paulina tries, but I don't believe Danny would ever get very good at it. I can't imagine he ever speaks it with her but he might get okay at listening and for sure he recognizes certain Spanish dirty words, like he can get the gist of what she's saying even if he can't reply in Spanish.

I could see Tucker understanding it, though. He might have a functional proficiency.

ah, well, so about that. most of the languages in that list are supposed to be crossed out ! back when I made my blog you could do a few html things in the blog description, but it doesn't show up anymore, especially not on the app/mobile. so now it just looks like a long list of languages which is a bit misleading

I am definitely interested in all those languages, and have taken a few classes or self-studied most of them over the years, but I definitely don't speak all of them

should probably be edited/updated, but I'm not even sure I'd still remember how to do that...

Understanding the TOEFL Exam: An Overview of Formats and Techniques

So, you’re preparing for the TOEFL exam, right? To do well, you have to understand the test’s component and rating and all of the techniques in between. Let’s break it down in simple terms to help you pass that TOEFL!

The TOEFL exam is available in two formats: an internet-based test (iBT) and a paper-based test (PBT). The iBT is more popular, although you might meet the PBT in areas where internet-based testing is not available. Regardless of the format, you will find four sections: reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

Sections:

Reading: You read academic passages and respond to questions about them.

Listening: You listen to lectures, conversations, and discussions, then respond to questions about what you’ve heard.

Speaking: This section is about expressing yourself. You will express your perspectives on a variety of issues, whether they are your own or answers to what you have read and heard.

Writing: It’s time to put pen to paper (or fingertips to keyboard). You have to write essays based on what you have read and heard, showing your writing skills.

Your overall TOEFL score runs from 0 to 120, with each section contributing equally. You’ll also receive individual ratings for reading, listening, speaking, and writing, which range from 0 to 30.

Sometimes I wonder are native anglophones(especially americans ) blind of their privileges or are we rest of the world too compliant and submissive? Because sometimes I don't think they know they get advantages compared to other nationalities(and sometimes this goes beyond their idea of race it's the nationality only and speaking English that glorifies them in people's eyes)

Through sheer happenstance my beloved and I both speak German. They’re significantly more fluent than me, having done a year abroad and double majoring in it. But both of us have stories passed down to us of the hilarious cultural misunderstandings present in learning a new language.

One of my German teachers had also spent a year abroad. He had a good grasp of the language but not the nuance. So when he’d closed on his first apartment and his lady got him a good deal he said, “Oh mein Gott, ich liebe dich!” (“Oh my god, I love you!”)

Now in English I love you is a multi-use term applied to friends, family, and for emphasis that you’re very happy, like someone just got you your first apartment.

In German however that phrasing is very specifically romantic. Not even casually romantic, it’s Serious Love. Parents tell their kids “Ich habe dich gern” or “Ich habe dich lieb” (literally “I have you gladly” or “I have love for you”) rather than “Ich liebe dich.” (This is as it was explained to me, don’t @ me it was public school)

So this woman was horrified and creeped out that this strange man, who she was alone in a room with, had pulled the cultural equivalent of declaring his undying love for her and asking her to have his babies.

He was equally horrified to have made such a faux pas when he realized how upset she was and profusely apologized. She understood better when he explained he was American.

A silly bonus story was that in that class we pranked one of the girls into thinking “Baum” was slang for cool. It just means tree. She’d be like “Das ist so Baum!” (“That is so tree!”) It went on for a few months before the teacher corrected her.

The next story is one of my favorites. My beloved heard from her teacher of a woman who had hosted a German exchange student for a while. At one point the girl came up to the her host mom to ask, “Where can we go buy a rubber? My sister collects them.”

“A rubber? She collects them??”

“Yes, can we buy her one?”

The woman was shocked that her exchange student was asking for a condom. But, she told herself, cultural norms were different, and she knew that German teenagers were given more sexual freedom. So, trepidatious but determined, she drove the girl to a local sex shop.

The girl, in turn, was horrified when they arrived. Most German student learn British English instead of American English and they call erasers rubbers.

The translation error made her host mom think she was asking for condoms when she just wanted a cute eraser and they both ended up embarrassed, surrounded by dildos.
