Marketers are leveraging AI and Machine Learning in various ways to enhance their strategies and achieve tangible results. From customer segmentation and demand sensing to media mix optimization and real-time personalization, AI and Machine Learning are driving innovation across the entire marketing spectrum.
What is Machine Learning?
Machine learning is a subfield of artificial intelligence (AI) that focuses on developing algorithms and models capable of automatically learning and improving from data without explicit programming. It enables computers to analyze large datasets, detect patterns, and make predictions or decisions based on the learned patterns.
In machine learning, the emphasis is on creating algorithms that can learn and adapt without being explicitly programmed. The process involves training a model using a large amount of data, allowing it to identify patterns and relationships within the data. The trained model can then be used to make predictions or decisions on new, unseen data.
There are different types of machine learning approaches, including:
Supervised Learning: In supervised learning, the model is trained using labeled data, where both the input features and corresponding output labels are provided. The model learns the mapping between input and output, allowing it to make predictions on new, unlabeled data.
Unsupervised Learning: In unsupervised learning, the model is trained using unlabeled data. The goal is to uncover patterns or structures in the data without any predefined labels. This type of learning is useful for tasks such as clustering or dimensionality reduction.
Reinforcement Learning: Reinforcement learning involves training a model to make decisions in an interactive environment. The model learns to take actions that maximize a reward signal by exploring the environment and receiving feedback in the form of rewards or penalties.
Machine learning finds applications in various domains, including image and speech recognition, natural language processing, recommendation systems, and, of course, marketing. It enables marketers to analyze customer data, personalize marketing campaigns, automate repetitive tasks, and optimize decision-making processes.
What are the 4 basics of machine learning?
Machine learning is a complex field, but it can be broken down into four fundamental concepts that form the basics of this powerful technology. These concepts provide a foundation for understanding how machine learning works and its application in various industries, including marketing. Let’s explore these four basics:
Data Collection: At the core of machine learning is data. To train machine-learning algorithms, large volumes of high-quality data need to be collected. This data serves as the input for the algorithms to learn patterns, relationships, and make predictions.
Data Preparation: Once the data is collected, it needs to be prepared and processed for training the machine-learning models. This involves cleaning the data, handling missing values, transforming the data into a suitable format, and splitting it into training and testing sets.
Model Training: In this phase, machine-learning algorithms are applied to the training data to learn from the patterns and relationships present in the data. The model adjusts its parameters based on the training data, gradually improving its accuracy and ability to make predictions.
Model Evaluation and Deployment: After the model is trained, it needs to be evaluated to ensure its performance meets the desired criteria. This evaluation involves testing the model on unseen data and assessing its accuracy, precision, recall, and other metrics. Once the model performs well, it can be deployed to make predictions on new, unseen data.
By understanding these four basics of machine learning, marketers can grasp the underlying principles and make informed decisions about incorporating machine learning into their marketing strategies.

By leveraging AI-driven solutions, businesses can enhance their copywriting efforts and optimize their content to deliver personalized experiences that resonate with their target audience.
In the realm of campaign management, AI algorithms can analyze vast amounts of customer data, including preferences, behaviors, and past interactions, to create highly targeted and relevant campaigns. By understanding the individual needs and interests of their customers, businesses can craft compelling messages that cut through the noise and drive engagement. Copywriting plays a crucial role in this process, as it involves creating persuasive and impactful content that connects with the audience on a deeper level. AI-powered copywriting tools can generate high-quality copy, leveraging natural language processing and sentiment analysis, to deliver personalized messages at scale.
Mobile app technology is another area where AI is making significant strides in B2C personalization. Mobile apps have become an integral part of consumers’ lives, providing a convenient and personalized experience. AI algorithms can analyze user behavior within mobile apps, such as navigation patterns, preferences, and in-app interactions, to deliver personalized recommendations, offers, and content. By leveraging AI-powered mobile app technology, businesses can create tailored experiences that cater to the unique needs and preferences of their customers, enhancing user engagement, satisfaction, and loyalty.
The role of content optimization in B2C personalization should not be underestimated. AI algorithms can analyze customer data, website analytics, and other relevant metrics to identify trends and patterns, enabling businesses to optimize their content strategy. This includes identifying high-performing content, identifying content gaps, and tailoring content to specific segments or personas. By leveraging AI-driven content optimization, businesses can deliver the right content to the right audience at the right time, maximizing engagement and conversion rates.
Incorporating AI and Machine Learning into B2C personalization strategies unlocks new possibilities for businesses to connect with their customers on a deeper level. can’t even convey how badly i need to be this tashi’s personal assistant/friend/confidant/? that’s always with her but people just can’t figure out your relation to her besides the fact that she’s always smiling/keeled over laughing when the two of you are together. maybe your patrick’s new wife and it’s chalked up to just a proximity thing, it’s easier for her to like you than be annoyed at your presence because it’s not like you’re going anywhere, her being married to his best friend and all. there isn’t really an explanation for why people zoom in on your lockscreen and find that it’s a photo of her that hasn’t been posted publicly.
she’s never been a rude woman, but she was noticeably closed off, drawing firm lines in what she was willing to talk about that never included her personal life. now she’s asking about people’s weekends, recounting her own with you and the plans the two of you have coming up, double + one-on-one dates that seem a little too romantic. maybe you’re the youngest of the 4, a nepo baby it girl with no set plans, no goals besides being hot and being a little chaotic. you manage to wrangle tashi into jewelry campaigns and get her to be the face of some clothing brand, keep her name alive and revive her career in a way entirely separate from tennis. let everyone know that you think she’s the most beautiful and deserving woman alive. you even convince her to take an extended vacation, a month just the 2 of you. you get caught one night after drinks, a blurry make out sold to tabloids. she plans to go scorched earth until she catches you smiling at the photo…decides it can’t be that bad.
i like imaging being her low stress private gf BUT if you wanted to make it angsty u could play up the fact that because you were born into money you’ve never really had to work for anything and don’t get that you will always be second to work in tashi’s life. it’s nothing personal, she’s just not the kind of girl to throw it all away for love. especially one that would bring questions and speculation and explanations to her family. maybe that pushes your own little insecurity button because no one’s ever wanted to- or HAD to hide you. leaves you feeling unimportant. like it all meant nothing, just a stop on the way to her. leads to the two of you butting heads one too many times, having a massive relationship ending fight. she makes it sound like she thinks so little of you, little rich girl that doesn’t know what real work is. doesn’t realize what it takes to run a family. HER family. she can’t believe how immature you are, liking tweets about “how historians will say you were good friends” (rip public likes), and with that you turn your heel, hellbent on making her feel just as shitty as she made you feel. and thus starts the PR war, taking digs and snippy comments at each other any chance you get. you call her a career obsessed psycho, she calls you a fame whore. you date the people you used to talk shit about with her. she sabotages brand deals. there’s a blurry paparazzi shot of her crying in the street comforted by art and clearly both unaware that they’re being photographed. you start partying harder to avoid the regret that’s creeping in. one night you happen to look up and see art standing there, making a quick appearance at some event neither of you could care less about. you and him had a great repartee before it all went down, he was a great sport about you getting his wife in bed and joined in a few times. for whatever reason you thought maybe that would keep going on, grinning and making your way over to him until you register how cold his eyes are, jaw set. one shake of his head is all it takes for you to leave the party in tears.
why did u stop there omg im invested,,,,,

these pictures of her.... tashi.....
i imagine you're someone she met naturally - maybe while she was getting coffee one day and a man was bothering you and she stepped in, it would be love at first sight essentially - for you, anyway - fluttering after her to ask if you can take her out, all hopeful. something about you intrigues tashi immediately - even when she purposely brings her hand up with her wedding band to push some of her hair back - she still agrees to a coffee date. maybe it'd be be nice to just talk to someone who isn't an assistant, or her husband, or a work associate -
neither of you expect how close you become. you're bubbly - someone tashi thinks she would have hated in high-school, seen as fake or whatever, but you're just.... like that. and you make her have fun when she's with you. when she comes over you make her these wild cocktails "saw this one on tiktok! look, its pink!!" and you make her dance with you to poppy music and it feels like those sleepovers she was always hearing about growing up, but never had time for. her life has always been about climbing to the top, working herself to the bone, and sure, thats not something you can relate to - but she appreciates the levity you bring to her life, regardless.
art notices how much lighter tashi is too, and a part of him is jealous, at first. tashi talks about you like you're a crush she has, like you're something special and that makes him feel.... something. but he doesn't have to feel in knots about it for long because its not long before tashi is inviting you to stay and their place - introducing you to her husband and her daughter - and art cant possibly be angry at someone who makes tashi smile like that.
although he does ask, later that night, when he and tashi are getting ready for bed - tashi had finally returned from setting you up in your own room - if tashi was into you. as a joke, mostly, but also not. and tashi had paused from fluffing her pillow and appeared to really think about it. "would it be a problem if i was?" is that she settles on. and art thinks about it. theres definitely something that gives him comfort that its not another man in his home that tashi has feelings for, even if that's misogynistic to think.
"i dont know." he says honesty. "would you leave me for her?"
and tashi laughs. no, she wouldn't. and if it did turn anything with you, she wouldn't exclude art. "i saw you check out her ass," tashi says, "and i saw her check out your dickprint. sweats, dear. we can all see."
and that's that conversation settled.
its not long after that that sex is introduced into your friendship. and for some time, its perfect. its easy - you go on these little dates and mini vacations and you stay over at her house more and more - in her and arts marriage bed, more and more - because art is an extension of tashi - you come to love him too, want him too, need him too.
but you were raised to have what you want when you want it. you get greedy. you want more of her time, their time - you start rolling her eyes when she tells you she cant come to see you because she has a dinner with art with these tennis executives and you start to zone out because you've never really understood sports and its become a sore spot. a way tashi and her husband connect, such a fundamental part of who they are and what they're built upon and you just..... dont get it. in the early days you liked to listen to her talk about it, but now you kind of hate it. it feels like a rival. a glaring reminder you're lesser than something and that's a feeling you dont like.
born rich and having people always falling over themselves to give you attention - tashi was like a breath of fresh air. she had as much money as you currently, but she wasn't born with it. she worked for it, and that made her have a realness to her you couldn't find in your real life. fake love, fake friendships, even your family is fucking fake - but tashi and art - they brought something tangible into your life, something that wasn't easy.
tashi treated you like a brat during sex - and she the tamer - and it opened your eyes to a whole new world. you loved working for her approval, because it could never be earned by throwing your money at her, it came from giving a part of yourself up and eventually that became too scary to deal with when you weren't sure if you were even permanent in her life.
tashi was never good with words and you lived for them and this eventually lead to your downfall - the breakup of the century - and its the worst heartbreak you've ever known because the only real and genuine thing in your life is gone, because she'd rather fuck a tennis racket for the rest of her life than truly build a life with you in it (at least that's how you see it)
and it hurts even worse because you lose art and lily too. lily who felt like a little niece to you. who always cheered when she saw you like you were someone cool just for existing. who you could watch all the barbie movies with and you didn't have to pretend like they weren't your favorite movies to watch.
and art.... who'd become a strange kind of friend... and boyfriend? over the years along with tashi. where tashi was ironclad art was mellow and soft and you could talk to him for hours about things you both were oddly passionate about. and he was a wonderful kisser. sex with him felt amazing. it was even better when it was all three of you, you didn't feel like some rich spoiled airhead between them, you felt like you were just a person that was well taken care of.
you dont handle the breakup well at all. tashi and art had always been more closed off than you - more quiet with their deep seeded feelings... while you were loud and screamed how upset you were from the top of your lungs. you were downright nasty about it to publicity.
no shade, full names said. trash talking boldly. calling tashi a tyrannical workaholic robot and how it was a nightmare to be her friend, and how you didn't know she was capable of warm feelings. you poked fun at art for being a lapdog and being walked like a pooch by his wife. (nevermind the fact you'd been the one to wear a collar in the bedroom)
its mean and childish and resentful and you're a bleeding wound and you wait for tashi's rebuttal. but whenever you're brought up, or something you said is brought to her attention, its met with cool dispassion. on both her and arts side. they skate over it, give a short and precise response thats somehow crueler than anything you could ever say in its simplicity, "if talking about me and my family is how she needs to heal, then she's more than welcome to it... what im focused on is..." and then she'd go into her next business venture with her husband.
it made your blood boil. it made you hurt even worse. it made you feel like you were nothing.
what you dont see is the dark circles under tashi's eyes every morning she has to brush concealer over. how sometimes the things you say sting so deep she throws her phone across the room and has to buy a new one. how very rarely she'll break down and let art hold her and she'll ask if she really is a cold unloving robot and art will tell her that shes not, that her love is different but its still real and genuine and he'll try to be a strong pillar for her but inside he wants to seek you out and find you, shake you and throttle you and tell you you're so fucking selfish and stupid because how could you not see tashi loved you? that he did too? how could you not feel it? how could you say the things you say about her, about him, when they'd let you into their bed and into their home and opened themselves up to you.
they weren't the most open people - and maybe that was something they needed to work on - but they'd been the most vulnerable they'd ever been with you. and you took their love and spit on it and said it wasn't shiny enough a rock for you.
it fucking sucked. he hated you for it. if he ever saw you in person he thought he might lose his temper.
you were starting to hate yourself too. why couldn't you be enough? why did you always want more? it definitely had nothing to do with growing up with no genuine love in your life, barely there parents, friends who only talked to you for your money, partners who always cheated on you once your sparkly quality wore off or someone even more sparkly came along. definitely had nothing to do with constantly being told you're vapid and artificial and have no substance to you and having the first people in your life treat you like you have value beyond your net worth - feel distant from you in a way you cant reach - is it any wonder you panicked?
perhaps you should have communicated better. perhaps you should have sat down and talked to them and asked how to be more a part of their life, perhaps you should have asked them to teach you more about tennis instead of growing resentful of it.
but those were things a well rounded mentally stable adult would do. of which, you are not.
at least they have eachother to fall back on.
maybe its time you got married too.

Evaaaaa, do you maybe have any thots on Captain Hydra!Steve? 👀 Perhaps being his little toy that is gifted to him for being such a good soldier? 🫠
Do I have any thoughts on Captain Hydra!Steve?
Dark, dominating, sizzling hot Captain Hydra!Steve?
who may be evil, but he's competent, smart, lethal and looks so fucking hot in that dark, tight suit;
whom you always tried to impress, though at times it seemed impossible, because he rarely shows any kind of appreciation for the soldiers and agents he's leading;
whose firm voice always makes you a bit scared, but also kinda aroused?
He keeps mostly to himself, never allowing any sort of closer relations with anyone, but sometimes would linger doing training sessions and personally give calm pointers (to those deserving, which were only a few);
He takes you by surprise when he tells you to follow him after one of the successful fights;
you really hope it's going to be a promotion you've been working your ass off to earn, dreaming of a higher rank, or perhaps some leadership role for another mission;
Your nerves heighten when Steve leads you to his personal headquarters, but you tell yourself that this really has to be about a promotion, because Captain never shies away from voicing his displeasure with failures in public, so the others could hear and witness humiliation;
your heart truly elates when he announces "It's time you were given a properly suited position for you";
but then you hear the sound of automatic door being sealed behind you, trapping you in Captain's quarters without any chance of getting out (not that you would stand a chance, if he wanted to kill you);
Trying to appear calm, you manage not to stutter as you voice your eagerness to take on any new responsibilities out there in the field;
but Steve's chuckle evokes dread as he slowly steps closer;
"This is your battlefield now, little sparrow. And I'm your conqueror."
You don't dare to step away when he cups your cheek - the act deceivingly tender, though his eyes are cold and glint with heartless triumph;
He pushes you to your knees and forces your face into his crotch, the scent of him permeating thick fabric of his tactic suit and filling your nostrils;
"Show me how eager you are," he ruts into your face, "how dutiful and obedient you're going to be for your Captain."

Hello! Been really enjoying your MHA takes especially the aftermath, it had me thinking but what if Hawks and the HC were responsible were for wiping out Izuku's record in the Final War. We know there was people recording Izuku's battle with Tomura but yet people not knowing about Izuku and acting like he is some mysterious legend just didn't sit right with me. But if they knew, OFA was going to disappear and there would be no Symbol of Peace in the short term until Mirio arrived (bleh). Then it would make sense why Hawks and company would delete this stuff for any number of reasons. It would be this weird sort of propaganda where the collective is glorified. While still retaining the status quo until they can find a stronger Symbol because I refuse to take seriously Mirio being number 1 cause his quirk is overrated.
This would help explain why Izuku's role in the war is essentially erased and no one seems to have remembered him despite being the deciding factor, but his depression/guilt means he doesn't care to talk about. It would be overwhelming for Izuku because the propaganda would only assert that his role was meaningless despite it being the contrary. Of course, it doesn't help that nobody does anything to help lift Izuku from his mental problems.
What your saying is absolutely plausible, however there are a few things that conflict with your theory.
No one really knew about OFA in the first place. This is a massive fuck up on Hori's part, as "canonically" only 3 people really know about OFA (5, if you count sheild and Melissa)
The fact is, the general public isn't really aware of what OFA was. To their knowledge Izuku might have been one of AFO's science projects or something of the sort, which could have created problems in trying to reestablish "order".
Thus the Commission thought it best for OFA to just fade into the background and that meant nipping every bud related to it. Including Midoriya.
You see, All Might is covered. He's made a name for himself and even though there was panic after his retirement, he's still one of the only people capable of standing firm. That alone grants him a level of protection and support networks that Midoriya clearly lacks.
The second issue is that the idea of a symbol is so ingrained with All Might (or rather the idea of AM) that OFA is connected to that by proxy.
The Commission needs a hero that doesn't exist anymore, because in a post Liberation War Japan? They can't exist.
Not when people have been exposed to how rotten the current system is underneath and no 'new coat of paint' will ever be enough to change that, no matter how fanciful the lie.
Midoriya by his very nature (and failings) as a hero, cannot become 'the greatest' in this world, because what once passed for the greatest turned out to be a human trafficking piece of shit, who was killed by his victim's own hand.
Izuku's record wasn't so much wiped, as much as he just gave up. He went so went so far off course that he wound up in a worse position than when he started and dragged everyone with him in the process.
The reality is a culture built on "out of sight, out of mind" when it comes to crime. MHA's Japan does this, but far, far worse and that isn't sustainable. Not when you have massive critics like Japan does.
Japan is in a free fall, Toshinori is one of those people, hopefully I'll get around to writing that mini chapter fully.
Hawks doesn't have the brains to lead. As seen in the U.N Meeting, he's a horrible politician (being a child soldier will do that). He's used to taking orders and polishing the boots of whomever is giving them, not sitting down and discussing how they (the nations) can use their power to make the world a better place.
As for the Hero Boards, due to the lack of participation, they fluctuate violently every term due to the smaller voting pool. Mirio's rank is only semi-consistant, with him constantly switching to number one and number three every odd poll showcase.
The portion of the public that still look up to heroes see him as a model person, but not a model hero. As they look for a hero that will never come.
The truth is there cannot be another All Might in the same way there can never be another AFO (Pre Kamio ofc). They were titans of their time, only able to exist because of the circumstances unique to their times.
There's a saying that is often misquoted
"The survival of the fittest"
This is an incomplete version of the phrase, the correct version is: "The survival of the fittest to adapt"
That is what evolution is, an arms race.
There will never truly be another All Might, there may never be another League Of Villains. But it doesn't matter, because some way, somehow.
The pieces will slot into place and then the real fun can begin. So long as their are those who slip through the cracks. So long as the current society stands.
There will always be that child that everyone can see, but choose to ignore.
They can lie to themselves, have them put on a happy face, shunt them to fitting into the current "mold" and then go home and wash their hands of responsibility because "I did my part".
It won't make them any less guilty.
It won't make those children any less adaptable.

summary: your best friend getting distracted by her crush leads you to meeting the most beautiful man ever !
THE HIGH NOTES pierced throughout your body, the bass thumping directly under your feet as though it were your own beating heart. Strobe lighting flashed mercilessly in front of your eyes, rendering you as blind for seconds at a time. Your friend had originally promised you that it was only going to be a small house party. However, unless small was now a way to describe over a hundred people, she had certainly lied to you.
Her firm grip on your wrist was one that would be leaving marks in the morning. She dragged you throughout the house, weaving you throughout the masses of people with such ease that it was as though they were not even there to her.
You could not help but let your head turn as you walked, taking in whatever sights you could. People talked, laughed, and danced. And few even went the extra mile with people they had just met.
It was a footballer’s party; you did not know what else you would have expected, they were closing off a long season. But a large part of you had not thought it would have gotten this rowdy.
Sure, you had grown up with the mass of newspapers that described in explicit details the activities they had gotten up to during a night out. It had always drawn you in, a certain intrigue as to what the other half of society would get away with. And even now, it was a small guilty pleasure. Scrolling aimlessly through your feed and lingering those few seconds longer on a news report about whichever one had cheated on their innocent girlfriend this time before realising what you were doing and scrolling onwards.
There was still an uncertainty about how your friend, Grace, had gotten an invite to such a ‘prestigious’ event. She worked for one of the clubs as a public relations intern, though she had always complained about how little time she had to interact with the players. The rare times that she did swiftly cut short by an impending job she or them had to do.
Even then, she had still longed for an invite. Having heard stories from colleagues about the rare times that the guest list expanded to include their names. It did not happen often and when it did, people tended to not allow it to go to waste. At least that it what she told you in her long-winded explanation about why you just had to attend with her.
Frozen air surrounded your blare flesh, waking you up from the daze you had put yourself in. It stuck to you as though it were a plaster or a piece of lone tape, one that was far too painful to remove from your suffering skin. The short black dress that you had opted for that night did little to help, its soft material only shrinking from the pressure.
Your hands had it worse, the pain that riddled them from the mixture of the different ice-cold sensations having you a step closer to hypothermia. Grace had somehow shoved a beer into your hand, one that had clearly originated from a form of freezer. She soon began sipping on it, grimacing when the taste landed onto her tastebuds.
Looking down at your filled hand before looking back at her, you raised your eyebrows, “We drink beer now?”
“We drink beer now.” She repeated your question, instead turning it into a statement as she lifted the bottle up to her lips to take yet again. Between then and the first sip, it had failed to begin tasting any better to before, the face she made making that evident. “Sadly.”
With hesitance, you lifted the bottle up to your own mouth, slowly letting the cool liquid slip into your mouth. It took far more effort than it should not to spit it back out into the bottle, your throat refusing it entry until you forced it downwards.
Grace stifled back a laugh, grateful for getting a first class viewing to your reaction. The both of you had never been good with alcohol. Either you were blackout within two shots, or you could not even get through downing the first shot before you had to back out from the taste. Rarely were there any in-betweens, this night being a lone exception.
“Do you think this is going to get me a good in with the players?” She asked you with a hushed tone, unwilling to let anyone surrounding hear what she was embarrassed to ask.
You were unsure in what to respond with, your lack of time spent with any football players deeming you as a rookie in this department. Your mouth opened and closed in a constant stream of failed attempts to answer, your brain already in such overdrive from the lights and music that it had not prepared to answer such a deep question.
“Probably, yeah. I mean, they wouldn’t invite you otherwise.”
The answer you had opted for seemed to please your friend, her back straightening slightly whilst she looked around the premises. It was empty compared to inside of the house. A constant stream of conversation from the people that had opted to be out here rather than the loud alternative.
A man walked up behind Grace wrapping his arm around her as he looked downwards expectantly to what was her hair until she snapped her head in his direction.
“Dominik!” She exclaimed, a smile covering her face within seconds. It countered the previous frown that she had worn perfectly. It left you in a sense of shock and slight confusion, never had you seen her smile at you in such a manner.
“I was hoping that you would actually come.” He said to her, his smile matching hers. His arm lingered around her shoulder as she turned to look at you, opting to add you into the upcoming conversation, to your disappointment.
She waited a beat, allowing you time to introduce yourself without her intervention but after an awkward five seconds she did not have any choice but to change her own strategy, “This is my friend y/n, the one with the cute dog.”
The man you now knew as Dominik turned to look at you in slight confusion before his eyes opened widely, his mouth dropping as a lengthened ‘oh’ slipped through it.
“Nice to meet you.”
His voice was louder than it was previously, having to talk over the music that took its chance to escape from the hell it had created when a door had opened. A spill of rowdy voices flowed through it, calling Dominik over to which he had refused quickly.
You nodded towards him, smiling politely at what you had thought he had said. Your weight was shifting from foot to foot uncomfortably, it becoming increasingly obvious how much you were not supposed to have come with your friend.
“And of course I would come, you made it sound like a good experience.” Grace’s attention was back to him, her eyes making deep eye contact with his as her hand snuck upwards to meet his gladly accepting one.
Silently, you took steps backwards to give them a slight amount of privacy during the moment that they were currently having. Your attention stayed on them, eyebrows furrowing harshly at the realisation of the failing of your friend. Not once had she told you about this man, keeping it to herself in such a way that it was insulting towards you for not having caught on sooner.
Taking the chance to look at her actions in the past and present, it was simple to see. The mere fact that you had not realised the second she had invited you to a party of all things being disappointing.
It was no time before you mind came running back to you. A heat lingered behind your back, protecting you from the cutting bite of the cold that still managed to hang peacefully in the air. You turned your head to see who had disturbed your trip down memory lane, a slight annoyance injecting itself into your veins.
The person stood behind you matched your furrowed eyebrows expression, not having enough intensity but everything else was creepily perfect. Before you could question his reasonings, he cut you off from something once again.
“I’ve never seen you before.” His bluntness was shocking, forcing you two steps forward. Your body was now facing his, your arms crossing over your chest in an almost defensive manner.
“Sorry?” Your spine straightened. “This is a party.”
His eyes widened when your words finally processed in his mind, his hand coming upwards to scratch the back of his neck. “My bad. Don’t know why I thought that would have worked as a conversation starter.
Laughing slightly, the tension that had taken over your already stiff shoulders beginning to back down.
“I’m Trent.”
He held his hand out to shake slightly retracting it before firmly keeping it in place so you could shake it.
“Y/n.”
You shook his hand briefly, unsure of what you should do after that.
“I’m Grace’s friend so that’s why you haven’t seen me before.”
She was still in deep conversation with Dominik, having not even moved position or as it looked, blinked once since you had moved your presence elsewhere.
“Oh, the one with the cute dog!” Trent said, his high-pitched voice catching your attention.
As it currently seemed, Grace had showed your newly adopted dog around her workplace. The fact did not manage to complete its mission in surprising you, her obsession with it since their first meeting being greater than you could have ever expected.
Trent had managed to notice the way your eyes obviously flicked back to your friend every few milliseconds, a small smirk perching itself above one side of his lips.
“Once they start talking, that is it. No point in even trying to get a word in because they do not hear a thing.” He shared with you as he also looked over towards their hand in hand figures before looking back towards you with slightly hooded eyes.
With a smile, you looked back over towards him, your eyes unexpectantly meeting with his, “I gathered that within a few seconds. I mean, I have never seen her like that with anyone.”
You admitted to him in a smaller voice than usual, hoping that your friend that, who was metres away from you, would not hear.
“They are awful, honestly.” He jokingly condemned the pair. “He’s been late to training a couple times because he was talking to her.”
The smile that covered his face was the most beautiful you had ever seen. It shone with the light that originating by the moon, drawing you in with its hypnotic methods. So much so that his words merged into one for you, not a single syllable made clear by your in-awe mind.
A simple wow was all that you could muster aloud. There was no way to confirm if that had been the correct response to the jumble that you had heard, though by the way you only got put into more of a daze by his charming face, it was no use even trying to figure something like that out.
“Y/n?” Trent called out, his eyebrows returning to their furrowed state as he stared you down slightly. “You alright?”
Your heart began putting in extra work at the realisation you had not gotten away with your staring, this time it being your turn to widen your eyes. “Yeah, why wouldn’t I be?”
“You seemed to have caught yourself a staring problem.” The smile that had originally put you in such a state, mockingly made a return. It almost caught you out once again, your stomach filling with panicking butterflies as your legs jellied.
“Me? No, you definitely had something in your hair.”
You were quick in your response, your hand flicking upwards slightly as your words directed themselves to the same place, both falling flat after receiving their time in the spotlight.
“What was it? A pretty face maybe?” He tried; one side of his smile once again weighing itself down so it could turn itself into yet another smirk. His legs extended into a step in your direction, closing the vast gap in between the two of you.
The thoughts in your head spiralled energetically, bringing your eyes down to the brick floor to find something to say back to him. A small black dot ran dangerously close to your feet, taking the chance to escape from your embarrassing moment. “It was actually a little spider.”
Trent chuckled softly as he shook his head at your attempted lying. A pink flush painted itself upon your cheeks, deciding to differ from the cosmetic blush you had originally put on.
“You could see it from that far away?”
He took another step.
“I have great eyesight.” Your eyes lifted from the dull, muddy ground so they could go back to his. The smile you had was wide with embarrassment at the fact you had not managed to lie your way out of this situation, and he did not seem like the type of man to let you live it down anytime soon.
“I wouldn’t-.” He was unable to continue with his sentence, his words swiftly being cut off by the calling of his name. He soon flicked their head in their direction, nodding slightly to keep them quiet for long enough to say goodbye. “I best get going. It was good to meet you.”
His steps were now backwards, remaking the previous gap between the two of you with over triple the size.
“Yeah, you too.” Your words were to no usage, only going to waste as they were unable to catch up to him. A hand on your shoulder gave you no time to look into it. This time, you turned around to see your best friend, her smile still as wide as ever.
“Trent?”
A shocked look being written all over her face gracefully joined her question, no matter how hard she had tried to cover it.
“Dominik?”
The reaction you she had given in response was all you needed to know. Within seconds, her hand wrapped itself around your wrist in the same manner as before, this time leading you straight for outside.
“Your ears are so red!” Grace laughed as she walked backwards to ensure she could see you properly.
“You have no right to talk. You were laughing so hard.” You scoffed with your words, slowing you pace down to a more natural speed. “And no man is that funny.”
With no warning, she suddenly came to a halt and with your poor reaction time, you had no choice but to bump into her.
“He is that funny.” She pointed an accusing finer at your face, tapping your nose in the process from how close the pair of you were.
“And you got caught staring at him.”
Grace was now screaming with laughter at your expense, her body doubling over. You stared at her as your eyes dropped.
“You saw that?” You called after her now retreating figure. “Grace, you saw that?”

I think everyone has their own Transformers continuity living inside their head so here's mine:
(technically I have two I but think this one is more interesting)
Okay first of all I'm flipping things a little- experienced leader and soldier Optimus and a younger, more inexperienced Megatron who's a prodigy. Do you see the vision??? Optimus who leads by example and wisdom vs Megatron who has the fire of youth and wants to revolutionize everything but lacks experience and humility.
For this hypothetical universe- Orion Pax is a police officer and Megatron is an aimless youth who recently earned his freedom from the Gladitorial scene via a sponsor (Starscream but I'll get to that later) On that- Megatron has his name already because it's a nickname he got during his gladiatorial days and now he's just kinda rolling with it lol. Orion is kind to a fault but undeniably wise and is set for a promotion to chief of his precinct and Megatron is the rookie who gets to shadow him.
(Note: The age disparity isn't extreme like Orion isn't Megatron's dad it's more of a senior/junior or older brother/younger brother type situation. I don't like these two having such a large gap between them because they're yk rivals. Equals. That doesn't work when there's a power disparity. And I think Megatron's rough life has made him quite mature anyways)
They work together for a time and the most interesting part of this whole thing (at least in my opinion) is that Megatron is the much more effective fighter. So it becomes this cute buddy cop thing for a while where Megatron is the brawns and Orion is the brain which will eventually parallel how Megatron becomes the weapon or instrument of destruction while Optimus is the reason or guiding light.
So when they inevitably have their disastrous split Orion is actually horrendously outmatched and dies. But you know, Optimus rises from the ashes and his strength as a Prime gives him just enough leverage over Megatron.
This will lead to Optimus shutting down his emotions- not necessarily becoming cruel or cold but just very distant as he believed that his kindness made him weak. Megatron meanwhile isn't exactly kind- but he has compassion and conviction. He's a good public speaker and a relatable figure to many people who are oppressed. That is how he rallies people to his cause.
What's interesting about Starscream in this AU/continuity is that he's almost Megatron's mentor. Starscream is a noble who sponsored Megatron's last fight and essentially bought him his freedom. Why? Starscream is a hedonist- everything he does is in pursuit of his own pleasure and enjoyment. He frees Megatron because even as a gladiator he was outspoken and it entertained Starscream. He joins and funds the Decepticons because he enjoys the revolution and carnage. He helps Megatron initially because Megatron's ideas entertain him. Starscream doesn't actually believe in anything; that's why he's chosen to be a follower. As for his eventual and inevitable betrayal of Megatron- he does so because he felt like it. I think the moral dilemma of "what does it mean to have a "good" reason?" is very interesting because is chasing after your own pleasure hollow or is it a worthwhile endeavor? (yes it's because of final fantasy Zenos sue me)
To parallel Starscream we have Shockwave who is a nihilist. Shockwave also believes in nothing and joins Megatron's side on a whim because the Decepticons approve and would fund his inhumane experiments. My running idea here is that Shockwave was originally a pretty upbeat, cool guy who was also after his own pleasure but eventually fell into depravity which may or may not be an indicator of where Starscream ends up.
I don't have much on the Autobots for this continuity, however I will say that Sentinel and Optimus are at odds for a while as the last two Primes. Sentinel is much more morally ambiguous and desperate while Optimus is more firm in him beliefs. It's this odd inversion of Orion and Megatron's dynamic where Sentinel is spineless and impulsive and Optimus is one again the voice of reason. But you can't exactly say that Sentinel is wrong- he is willing to do anything to survive which has earned him his status as a Prime while Optimus wants to minimize sacrifice. It's this push and pull of "you cannot save everyone" and "I have to try and save everyone." Yes, even though Optimus tries to shut down his emotions he is still incredibly sympathetic and not as unfeeling as he's like himself to be. Sentinel is the same but only suppresses his negative emotions and tries to put on a brave face for the Autobots. So when Sentinel dies and Optimus becomes the last Prime standing and the sole leader of the Autobots they take a blow to their morale.
Anyways yeah that's all I got because if I say anything else stupid shit will come out of my mouth and I will also never shit up

There he was, looking at her with the smuggest look she’s ever seen. He’s tucking his shirt back into his pants, fastening the button and zipper, and looking up at her with rosy cheeks and closed-mouth grin. When all she does is look at him stoically, he chuckles softly, shakes his head, and finishes getting dressed. He leans in to leave a peck to her forehead before departing.
“Harry.” She calls to him, making him turn to look at her. “This was a one-time thing.”
“Whatever you say, Peach.”
And then he’s gone. She frowns at the use of her nickname. The one bestowed upon her by her mother. It was “Peaches” actually, but over the years people have just come to call her “Peach”. It wasn’t something she thought would carry over into her adult life, but she did. Then in bled into her professional life. She doesn’t mind when people call her that…except for him. Whenever Harry calls her Peach or Peaches, he says it in the most condescending tone. Sometimes when he’s feeling especially obnoxious, he likes to call her “Peaches and Cream”.  He turned her sweet nickname into something she almost hates hearing now. But everyone knows her as Peach, and she doesn’t want to rock the boat by making them call her, her actual name. (Which she can’t stand. And her middle name is no good either.)
She hates Harry. He’s been a menace to her for years. So how she allowed him to take her home and fuck her into her mattress…she can’t really recall. As she shuffles into her bathroom and washes her face, she thinks about how the night’s events transpired. They weren’t intoxicated. They weren’t under the influence of any kind. They were simply working late, which was nothing out of the ordinary for either of them.
She and Harry are both account managers at a prestigious PR firm – Harris Public Relations & Media Consultation. Harry is a nepotism baby though. His father worked at Harris for years, was the CFO, that whole thing. So it was easy for Harry to get an internship during undergrad in the marketing department. And it was easy for Harry to get hired on as a copy editor while going for his MBA. And it was easy for Harry to move up the ranks until he was one of the lead account managers.
Peach, on the other hand, well…she worked a little harder. She got a full ride to Columbia thanks to hours upon hours of writing letters and essays for scholarships. She thought she might like to go into journalism, but she only ended up minoring in it. What stole her heart was media relations and literacy. She just found it fascinating! The theory behind what media are, and how to properly learn how to use them interested her more than anything. She took a course on the art of media training, and that was it for her. She knew she wanted to do something in the world of public relations. She also looked up to Samantha from Sex and the City, and how she was able to basically build an empire all on her own. That was Peach’s dream, to someday have her own PR firm.
But she knew it would take time to be able to do that. She had to learn the business and make a name for herself. She found an internship during undergrad, but she had to go through a more rigorous interview process than Harry had. She also got her start in copy editing, but for a small marketing company. Working at a place like Harris would be a huge stepping stone for her career. So when a job opened up on the media relations team a few years back, she applied. And thanks to her networking skills, she had some incredible people to put down as references. It took over a month, but she was hired. She was doing copy editing, working with clients, doing some media training to up and coming artists. All things that were good experience for her to get under belt.
Being an account manager though…that’s where the big buck and the notoriety are. This where are a person can put their money where their mouth is. The CEO, now Harris’ son Jeremy, is the one who assigns the account managers to specific clients. Each manager has a team, that team puts together a pitch, and they all pitch it to the client. The client then picks which pitch they like best, and that manager and their teams gets to work with the client going forward. Everyone gets paid a standard salary, but account managers are given a commission when their pitch is selected. Not to mention the pure bragging rights.
So, she knew if she ever wanted her own PR firm, then she’d start needing experience managing accounts. She requested a one-on-one meeting with Jeremy after working for the company for two years. She did good work. She brought him facts and figures. He was impressed. When he asked what she wanted when she was done selling herself to him, she explained her work goals and aspirations. She didn’t say she wanted to have her own firm, no, she told him she wanted to be an account manager here at Harris and she wanted to be the one to continue getting them in the 21st century. She wanted to bring the company more money and more clients. This is exactly what Jeremy wanted to hear. But since she’s a woman, she had to be a bit more persuasive. She knows how Jeremy is. He looks, but never touches. He’s a married man, after all. So, she gave him various things to look at that day. She wore her tightest pencil skirt that fell about halfway around her thighs, sheer, black tights underneath, a pair of pumps that would help her legs look a little longer, and a blouse that showed off her cleavage beautifully.
It was in the bag. Jeremy’s eyes drifted and wandered as she spoke. She pretended not to care that she was being openly objectified by the CEO of the company. And by the end of the meeting, he told her that one of the other account managers would be retiring at the end of that month, but no one knew yet. So, the open position would go right to her if she wanted it. She accepted, and shook his hand, lingering just a tad to make him feel wanted. Giving a man an ego boost is always the icing on the cake. She got exactly what she wanted.
This tactic may not have been obvious to the other account managers, but it was obvious to Harry. He has no problem working with women. He prefers to work in a diverse space, so that’s not the problem. The problem is he knew exactly how she played it. She used her looks and body to weasel her way into an open position that she didn’t have a formal interview for. Harry was hoping there would be a legitimate search done for a new account manager so one of his friends at another frim could apply. But no…Peach got it.
She was given the office right next to Harrys. Glass all around for easy view of the city and the people working at the desks outside of the offices. There were blinds that could be pulled for privacy, of course. She had her own assistant that would help manager her calendar and meetings. And now she’d be able to put her own teams together for pitches. She knew who she liked in the graphics department, and she knew who she liked in the print shop, and she knew who she liked for writing copy. It was all falling into place.
Harry was convinced that she slept with Jeremy to get the position. To him, it seemed like she had no experience for pitching to clients and making the important things happen. To him, she had more experience in damage control, quality assurance, those types of things.
At her first account managers meeting, Jeremy was there to deliver some new updates. He was a hands on CEO, just as his father was. He didn’t just want to be a figure head for the company. He still took on the occasional client and everything.
“And my last announcement is to welcome our newest account manager, Peach.” He smiled in her direction, and everyone looked at her. She smiled at everyone sheepishly, then they turned their attention back to Jeremy.
After the meeting, Harry saw her refilling her water bottle at the water bottle station near the bathrooms. He was going to refill his bottle as well.
“Congrats on movin’ on up.” He said her. At first she thought he was being sincere. Could the nepotism baby actually be a kind person with a soul?
“Thank you, Harry.”
“Please, just call me H, everyone else does.”
“Alright.” She smiled and stepped aside to let him refill his water.
“So, what kind of a name is Peach? Did your parents have an affinity for the fruit?” He asked her nonchalantly.
“No, it’s just a nickname my mom gave me when I was a kid. She used to call me Peaches, and then that shortened to Peach as I got older. It sort of stuck, and I prefer to use it. It’s shorter than my actual name. Rolls off the tongue easier.”
“Ah.” Harry nodded, screwing the cap back onto his bottle. “I bet Jeremy thought you were just the sweetest thing, then?” He said sweetest thing with a slight country twang. Was he mocking her? Her mother may have been from the south, but she was no bumpkin.
“I don’t know about that, but I know he liked what he saw when I showed him my portfolio.”
“Mm.” He nodded again. “Well, bless your heart, Peaches. Welcome to the team.”
He turned and walked away from her, leaving the foulest taste in her mouth. So what if she was born in Georgia. She wasn’t raised there. Her parents got divorced, and her mother moved them up north to Boston where one of her cousins lived. Her mother met a man that worked in IT, and she got a new step-dad in a matter of a couple of years. She doesn’t even have an accent. Her mother barely has one anymore. What the fuck was Harry’s problem?
The two didn’t see much of each other except for the weekly account managers meeting. They were often working on different projects, and they never used the same people for their teams. Jeremy assigned specific managers to specific pitches because he knew where certain people had expertise. Different clients needed different things. So, really, Peach didn’t have to work with Harry all that much. She hated that her office was next to his, but it’s not like he was a distraction.
He knew how to push her buttons, though. He’d throw in various version of her nickname during meetings to make her look stupid and juvenile. Saying things like, “We haven’t heard from Peaches on this”, or, “Settle down Peach and Cream”, or literally anything that would make her the butt of a joke. She loathed him. Harry knew it was childish to pick on her, but he was pissed. If she could schmooze her way into this position, who’s to say she won’t do that again for an even higher position? No way will she ever be the boss of him. Harry works hard, and he’s good at what he does. He’s one of the top account managers at the firm. If anyone’s going to get a bump up, it should be him.
It went on like this for a year. They made each other crazy. Then came the day when Harry, Chris, John, and Peach were all called into a meeting with Jeremy and his executive assistant. This is usually how he assigned really important pitches to a select number of account managers. What both Harry and Peach couldn’t figure out is why they were being called into the same meeting.
“You all are familiar with the popular hotel chain called RJR, right?” Everyone nods and hums in agreement. “They’re looking to rebrand. They’ve had the same logo, slogan, and branding for over thirty years, and they want to change things up. They want to get more young people using their website to book rooms and events. The majority of their clientele are older people, and they love them, but they want to expand and market to more.” Everyone takes notes as Jeremy explains. “You all have experience when it comes to helping a company work through rebranding. This is going to be an insanely involved project, so I wanted my top managers on this.”
Harry thought he was going to explode. Since when was Peach a top account manager? She’s only been at this for a year! Harry’s been managing accounts for over five! He knows he gets paid more, especially since his pitches are usually the ones chosen by the client, but now he seems to have some real competition. Jeremy’s assistant emails everyone the briefing on what the hotel is looking to do. Now it’s on the account managers to do some market research before pulling their teams together. They have a week and a half before the VP of Marketing from RJR comes to hear the pitches.
She stays late every night to do take notes and put her information together. They all still have other work during the day to get done. It’s not unusual for people to stay late. She wants to be able to articulate what different populations are looking for in terms of hotel service. What’s important to these different age groups? 24-hour front desk service? A proper mini-fridge? Storage space? Free breakfast? It’s a lot to consider. If the nightly rate is high, what are the customers getting for that price?
“Well, look he’s still here.” Harry’s graining, agitating voice rings loud and clear to her as he steps into her office. “It’s Miss Peach Pie.”
“What do you want, H? I’m busy.” She says flatly.
“Nothing.” He shrugs. “I was just finishing up my work for the night. I used one of the conference rooms that has a larger whiteboard so I could brainstorm a little.” He puts his hands in his pockets and smirks at her. “Don’t get too excited though, I erased everything, so you won’t be able to steal any of my ideas.”
“Your ideas are probably just as stupid as you are, so I’m all set.”
“Oof.” He puts his hands over his heart to fake that she’s wounded him. “That was a good one. Calling me stupid is so high level.”
“I apologize, I’m a bit tired from the day. I promise to insult you properly tomorrow morning after a good night’s sleep.”
“You know you’re not going to be selected for this, right? You’re going up against me, John, and Chris. You don’t stand a chance.”
“Sounds like someone’s projecting.” She sing-songs. “You’re that scared of me stealing your thunder?”
“All I’m saying is, you’re running with the big dogs now. Some of us aren’t exactly friendly.”
“Don’t have to tell me twice about that.”
“Just don’t be surprised when one of us bites you on the ass.”
“Hm.” She grins and crosses her arms over her chest, leaning back in her chair. “And what would a bitchless guy like yourself know about biting asses?” Harry’s mouth falls open. “I mean, it’s one thing for a woman to work late. I don’t have kids to get home to, and I pay my neighbor’s kid to feed my dog and take him out. But you, a man of such stature and status, you’d think you’d have some hole to rush home to.” She pouts mockingly at him. “What’s wrong? Your pocket pussy just not doing it for you anymore?”
Harry narrows his eyes at her. “My private life stays separate from work. Pardon me for not talking about what or who I get into on the weekends like some of our other colleagues.”
“It’s okay to admit you’re a virgin, H. Everyone does everything in their own time. I’m sure it’ll happen for you someday.” She smiles ever so sweetly at him. “Life isn’t a race.”
“Go to hell.” He huffs, and leaves her office to go to his, gathering his things and leaving her in their wing all alone.
He hates her. He loathes her. He has to beat her at this, he can’t let her win.
//
After a week and a half of snide comments, and hours upon hours of extra work, the VP of Marketing from RJR is here in the nicest conference room to hear the four different pitches. Jeremy is sitting with her. Her name is Adelaide Benjamin. She looks to be in her late forties, but her eyes are kind. It’s not often the managers get to pitch to a woman. It makes John and Chris a little nervous for their presentations. They’re both guys’ guys. Harry can charm anyone, so he’s not worried one bit. And Peach, well, she’s not stupid enough to relax just because she’s pitching to a woman. Often times in business, women aren’t so quick to support other women.
The four of them get to meet with Adelaide, sharing a delicious breakfast catered by the firm’s dining department. She goes over her plans and what the company over all is looking to do. They all are given time to freshen up and use the bathroom before the presentations start. John goes first, then Harry, then Peach, and then Chris. The four of them are brought back in after Adelaide and Jeremy chat for a while.
“Thank you all so much for your marvelous presentations. I’m going to take back the materials you’ve given me to my team, and talk things over with them. I should have an answer on who I’d like to take this on in a few days.”
Oh, she’s thorough. Today is Thursday, which means they won’t have an answer until Monday. Which means the four of them are going to be on edge until then. It makes it difficult to concentrate on their other projects. Peach’s stomach isn’t feeling too great. She’s not sure if she ate too much or too little earlier. She’s not sure if it’s the nerves. She’s not sure if maybe her skirt is just a little too tight around her stomach as she sits. It’s really a better outfit for standing.
She manages to get through the day unscathed, but around 5:15, she’s rushing to the bathroom. She’s never sure which end is worse for things to come out of, but at work, she’d prefer to throw up. Luckily, that’s all it is. She heaved hard until her stomach was empty, and it was just bile coming out. She stands up slowly, and goes to rinse her mouth out at the sink. She keeps a spare toothbrush in her office, and makeup wipes. She sighs with relief at the thought because looking at herself in the mirror right now…
Her forehead is clammy, her body feels sweaty, and she looks like a raccoon because now her eye makeup has smeared and clumped under her eyes. She’s just happy she had the good sense to put her hair up before coming to the bathroom to throw up. Feeling exhausted, she pushes the bathroom door open only to be met with Harry refilling his water bottle. He looks at her like he’s looking at a ghost. He almost looks concerned? That can’t be.
“Was…was that you in there?” He blinks, and she nods. “Christ, I don’t think I’ve heard someone yak that violently before. Do you always sound like that when you spew?”
“I don’t know, I don’t usually pay attention to the way I vomit while it’s happening.” She wipes under her eyes and sighs when she sees how much makeup comes off on her hands. “I need to go clean myself up.”
“Are you feeling alright?” He asks as he follows her back to her office. He watches as she pops a piece of gum in her mouth, and uses a wipe to clean her face. “Are you sick?”
“My stomach’s been bothering me all day. I think it was something I ate this morning.”
“Well, I feel fine and no one else seemed to get sick from the food.”
“Maybe it’s a stomach bug, then. I don’t know. I plan to take a sleeping aid and knock out when I get home.”
“Could be something else.” He smirks. “Maybe you’re pregnant. What a blessing that would be. You’d go on maternity leave, we’d hire someone on in your place on a temporary basis, they’d excel, and then you’d be fired a month after returning.” He looks off, smiling, as if he can really picture it. “What a world that would be.”
“Just because a woman throws up does not mean she’s pregnant.” She bites. Harry looks at her. He’s never seen her face look so plain and delicate. He’s seen her at the end of the day before. He knows what she looks like when she’s exhausted. This is just the most vulnerable he’s ever seen her. It’s like she’s taken all of her armor off. “I’m packing up so I can go home. Hopefully it was just a one and done.”
“Maybe you should stop by a pharmacy on your way. You know, grab some Nyquil, maybe some O.J., and a pregnancy test, just to be sure.”
“You know, you really shouldn’t be an ass about things like this.” She huffs as she stuffs her bag with her things. “What if I was trying to get pregnant, hm? What if I’ve miscarried? What if I couldn’t have children? Do you know how awful it would be to be questioned like this if I had all that going on? You don’t like being asked about your personal life, well, neither do I. So drop it.”
“You’re right, it was insensitive me to joke about that.” He says genuinely, and it helps her to calm down. “It was stupid for me to even bring it up. I mean, it’s not like you’re fucking anyone. You said it yourself, the only thing you’re going home to is your dog.”
Her bottom lip juts out in a pout. Harry’s about to roll his eyes because she’s famous for using that pout to her advantage, but when he notices her lip start to quiver and tears slipping down her cheeks, well, his entire demeanor changes.
“Shit, I took it too far.” He crosses the room over to her just as she’s grabbing a tissue to dab her eyes with.
“You always do, it’s nothing I can’t handle.” She says through her tears. “Don’t go all soft on me just because I’m tearing up.” She wipes under her eyes and reaches for her coat. “You have no idea what I’ve been through in the last six months because I check my shit at the door. Work is a good distraction. I used to have more to go home to, but I don’t anymore.” She brushes by him over to her door, and she motions for him to leave so she can lock it. “But at least I still have something there that’s happy to see me when I get in. What do you have, huh?” He furrows his eyebrows as he looks at her. “You have absolutely nothing outside of this place.” She zips up her jacket and locks her office door. “See you tomorrow, asswipe.”
//
She doesn’t see him tomorrow. She actually had to call out of work. Turns out she does have a stomach bug. She’s feeling much better by the time Monday comes around. She knows she was really harsh when she last spoke to Harry, but she doesn’t care. He’s been harsh with her time and time again. It’s about time someone gives it back to him.
Her assistant tells her she has a meeting with Jeremy at nine, so she prepares for that. She wonders if he’s letting her down easy for not getting the pitch. She figures Harry probably got it. She stops short at Jeremy’s office when she sees Harry chatting with Jeremy’s assistant.
“Oh, good, you’re both here. Come in.” Jeremy says, and she and Harry both go to sit on the other side of his desk. “I had a video call with Adelaide last night. After looking over all the materials with her team, she feels as though it would be best if the two of you worked on the account together.”
“What?” They say at the same time.
“She enjoyed both of your pitches immensely, and was having a hard time choosing. She said you both bring different and interesting ideas to the table, and she’d like to see them combined cohesively. You each will still get a full commission, so it’s not like you have to split this one.” He looks at Harry, then at her, smiling fondly as his eyes rake over her body. “Peach, I think it would be a good opportunity for you to work with Harry. As you know, he’s one of the top account managers at this firm, he has plenty of experience under his belt, especially a rebrand of this caliber.”
“Yes, sir, that makes sense.” She says, swallowing her pride a bit as she nods.
“And Harry, you could learn a thing or two from Peach. She’s very up to date on what Gen Z is up to online. Adelaide noted that she enjoyed Peach’s ideas for getting the company on Tik Tik. I know social media outside of Facebook and Instagram isn’t your favorite, but it’s a fad that seems to be everlasting.”
“Tik Tok…right.” Harry nods slowly.
“You have a month to get a concise concept together for her review. You’ll be sent some of their own market research that her team has done. It should help you figure out how to best target the audiences they’re looking draw in. Any questions?” They both shake their heads no. “Excellent. Hop to it.”
The two stand up and leave in complete shock. They don’t speak to each other for two days. Neither of them know what to say to the other. But Wednesday rolls around and it hits them that a month really isn’t a ton of time to put everything together, so they need to meet. They block out the whole afternoon to meet in one of the larger conference rooms so they can looks over the other’s materials and use the whiteboards to brainstorm.
“I still don’t understand the need for a Tik Tok account for a hotel chain. Who would want to watch videos about a hotel?” Harry asks her.
“The videos wouldn’t be about the hotel. People like it when brands jump onto weird trends that have absolutely nothing to do with their product. It’s funny and unexpected. It drive those viewers to their account page which is where a link to the hotel site would be.” She smiles smugly. “I didn’t think I’d have to explain something so simple to you, but that’s on me for assuming you have at least one brain cell in that giant head of yours.”
“Making fun of someone’s personal appearance is shallow, rude, and cheap.” He turns his nose up at her. “I didn’t look at the Tik Tok thing in that way. I don’t use the app myself, so I guess I’m not up on all the trends and whatnot.”
“It’s actually pretty fun. There are definitely people on there with brain rot, but you can just block the accounts you don’t want to see. Let me guess…you use reels?”
“No.” Harry says defensively. “But I have friends that send them to me from time to time.”
“Wait a second.” She shakes her head in confusion. “You have friends?”
“Not all of us prefer to only converse with four-legged animals, Peaches.” He sighs. “What did you think of the mock ups my team did for the logo?”
“I actually really liked them. You had Lee do these?”
“Yeah, he’s always my go to.”
“This one’s my favorite, it’s sleek, not too busy, but it still has some pizazz.” She taps her finger on one of the pieces of paper.
“Alright, something we actually agree on.” Harry sets the other logos aside on the other side of the table. “Now, I was thinking we could do some type of mailer for the crowd that doesn’t like digital marketing. A post card with a coupon code could go over very well. They can be directed to the website or call the hotel directly.”
“We can send it as an email as well.”
“Right.” Harry nods. “I was thinking long-time rewards members could get a voucher for one free night, or free breakfast during their stay. Adelaide said the company is fine with spending a little to make a lot.”
“I think giving that to long-time members is a good idea. It costs more to get and retain new people, let’s focus on the people we have.”
“Exactly.” Harry smiles. “So, here’s a binder full of information I had my assistant put together. If you could look through it and take some notes, I can-“
“I’m going to stop you right there.” She slides the binder back over to him. “I’m not your admin, I’m not going to be the only one doing the clerical work. Also, do not assign tasks to me like I’m lesser than you.”
“Jeremy said you could learn from me. I’m just showing you my process. Like me or not, I have a good track record with my clients. I’ve already looked through the binder and put my notes in the margins. I just wanted you to look it over as well so we have the same information.”
“You could have said that in the first place.” She murmurs.
“You’re very hostile when you don’t need to be.”
“If I’m hostile it’s because you make the environment that way. You’re always so combative. You make everything a competition!”
“That’s our job! We compete for clients.”
“But you’re especially competitive with me. I’m a woman in a male dominated field and office, I have to work twice as hard as you. If I show the wrong emotion, I’m a bitch or a pushover or weak or nasty.”
“Are you telling me that I don’t work hard? That I didn’t work hard to get to where I am?”
“That’s exactly what I’m saying. Your father was the CFO! Of course you got one of the best jobs here.”
“I worked my way up same as you.”
“It wasn’t the same, Harry.”
“You’re right, I didn’t sleep my way to top.”
“Excuse me?!”
“Don’t act so surprised that I figured it out, it’s obvious.”
“What’s obvious?” Her eyes and nostrils are flaring.
“You hooked up with Jeremy, that’s how you got the open position without going through the formal interview process. That’s why you dress and act the way you do. You wanted his attention, you got it, and you have him something in return. Now, I don’t know if you blew him under his desk or if you let him fuck you, but-“ Smack! Harry clutches at his cheek, and looks at her in shock. Her chest is heaving and her eyes are watery.
“How fucking dare you.”
“Did you just slap me?! I could report you, I could-“
“And I could report you for sexual harassment and defamation of character! That’s how you think I got this job? By sleeping with the CEO?”
“It had to have been! I see the way he looks at you. I see the way everyone looks at you.”
“I asked for a meeting with him, not even knowing there was going to be a position opening up. I just wanted to sit with him and go over my goals and where’d I’d like to be in the next few years. I showed him my portfolio, he asked me a few questions, and we had a great conversation. He didn’t touch me, I didn’t touch him, it was all professional.”
“Mhm.” Harry rolls his eyes. “So every time we meet with him, I’m just imagining the look he gives you?”
“What look?”
“Like he’s ready to devour you right then and there.”
“Jeremy looks, but he doesn’t touch. He would never cheat on his wife, he needs her, and he knows she’d leave him if he did anything behind his back.”
“How could you possibly even know that?”
“His assistant told me. She wanted to know what the meeting was for, she was excited for me, and she gave me some tips. So, yeah, I wore one of my best outfits and let my cleavage pop a little, but I didn’t sleep with him. And even if I had, shame on you for shaming me for it. We all have to learn to play the game, Harry. Women are dealt a different hand, so we play the game differently. I didn’t do anything wrong.” She starts gathering her things. “I cannot believe that I have to continue to work on this project with you.”
“I can’t believe you slapped me.” He rubs his cheek and starts chuckling. “Got me pretty good.”
“I’m not a particularly violent person, but you said something totally out of line, H.” She looks at him. “It’s not funny.”
With that, she leaves the conference room. They communicate via email and Teams all day Thursday. She couldn’t bare to be in the same space as him. She even worked in a separate area so she wouldn’t have to look over and see him in his office. They agreed to meet late on Friday to get back to the task at hand. They ordered takeout and got to work. Keeping things strictly professional, not getting distracted by petty conversations. Harry ended up ordering some ice cream through Uber Eats. He’s got a sweet tooth, so now they take a break while they soak in the sugar.
“I think this is really starting to come together.” He says as he walks around the conference table, looking over their materials. “I think we could probably start putting our team together next week.”
“Agreed.” She nods. “I have to say, ice cream was a good idea.”
“Much needed.” Harry sets his cup down and stuffs his hands in his pockets. “I…haven’t formally apologized for what happened the other day. I shouldn’t have spoken to you like that.”
“It’s not about the way you spoke to me, it’s about you assuming I was fucking around with our boss to move up. And even if I was, it’s none of your business.”
“You’re right, it’s not.” He slowly approaches her. “To be honest, I don’t think it would have bothered me if it were anyone else.”
“Why? Because you already didn’t like me?”
“Yeah.” He smirks, stepping closer until her bum hits the edge of the conference table. He’s never been this close to her before. “But also…” He places his hands on either side of her on the table, their noses nearly brushing. “I hate the way the other guys look at you, especially Jeremy.”
“What do you care how other people look at me? Why do you even notice?”
“Because after I’m done looking at you, I’m looking to see if anyone else is seeing what I’m seeing.”
“What do you see?” She asks carefully, not faltering or backing down even though Harry is extremely intimidating in this position.
“The most frustratingly gorgeous woman.”
“You’re being mean.” Her bottom lip pouts ever so slightly, and Harry’s eyes darken.
“I’m being serious.” He closes his eyes and presses his forehead to hers. “You have no idea what it does to me when you pout like that.”
“H.”
“Tell me to back off if I’m making you uncomfortable.” He looks at her. “We can get right back to work, and I’ll promise to never get this close to you again.”
“You’re trying to get me caught up in something for leverage.” She pushes on his shoulders to get him to back up. “You want me to make a move so you can hold it over me. You’re being an ass and messing around.”
“I’m not messing around. Jesus Christ, not everyone in this world is out to get you.”
“I never said they were! God, you love to put words in my mouth.”
“I actually only have one thing I’d love to put in your mouth, but something tells me you wouldn’t go for it.”
“Oh, please.” She scoffs. “You’d blow your load the second the open air hits your prick. Virgins tend to lose it a little faster, but I’m sure you’ve looked that up before.”
“Why do you think I’m a virgin?” He laughs, exasperated.
“You seem very sexually repressed.” She crosses her arms over her chest, and looks him up and down. “And all this.” She gestures around him. “It doesn’t exactly scream, ‘this guy fucks’.”
“I’ll have you know I get compliments all the time on my clothes.”
“Just because they fit right doesn’t mean they’re appealing.”
“How would you know if they fit right?” He smirks.
“It’s hard not to notice when you’re always wearing pants that are tight around your ass. You’re like a math teacher or something, you love to lean over a table during a meeting and stick your butt out.”
“It’s more comfortable to stand that way.” He shrugs. “And just to circle back, if anyone’s sexually repressed, it’s you.”
“Me?”
“You’re entire aura screams that you need to get dicked down, and you need it bad.”
“Well you’re right about that.” She agrees. “But not from you. I’m not in the mood to explain the female anatomy to someone. Did you know that women can orgasm too? It’s not just something men can do.”
“Is that right.” Harry nods.
“Mhm, and we can get wet as well. Not something I would expect you to know anything about.”
“Are you wet right now?”
“That’s not a question you ask someone.” Her cheeks flush.
“Why not? Our conversation is already so vulgar. Answer the question, are you wet? Are you turned on? Are you hot?”
“Come find out for yourself.”
“Are you serious?”
“Yeah.” She motions to him to come closer. “I give you full permission to touch me and find out.”
“You’re bluffing.”
“I’m not.”
Harry steps towards her, slinging an arm around her waist to pull her closer. His other hand reaches to unzip the zipper on the side of her skirt. His fingers skim along her sheer stockings before tucking them inside. She takes a deep breath, but continues to hold eye contact with him.
“You’re sure you’re okay with this?” He asks.
“Yes.”
His fingers slide down further, moving between her folds and the cotton cloth covering her. His nostrils flare when he feels how wet she is. He didn’t think he did it for her, he’s pleasantly surprised. She’s not overly drenched or anything, but she’s definitely aroused. They look at each other, both of their hearts  beating rapidly.
In a flash, Harry’s hands are flying to her jaw and he’s taking her bottom lip between his teeth. The surprised gasp she makes gives him access to the inside of her mouth. His tongue molds with hers. He’s aggressive, but not in an inexperienced excited way that would have him slobbering all over her, no, it’s the type of aggressive where if he doesn’t keep kissing her they’ll both die. He moves the various papers behind her on the table and sits her up on it. She’s on her back in seconds with him on top of her, pressing his hard cock into her hip. She tries to shift to get him where she wants him, but her skirt is too tight around her thighs. She moans into his mouth and tugs on his tie. They’re doing a lot of grinding and grabbing, but it’s frustrating.
“I’m about ready to just rip your blouse open.” He growls against her mouth.
“We can’t do this here.” She pants. “C-cameras.”
“They’re only in the halls.”
“Harry.” She pushes on his chest and she sits up. “I don’t feel comfortable doing this here.”
“Right.” He runs a hand through his hair. “It’s late, we both got carried away. We should-“
“Let’s go back to my place.”
“Are you serious?”
“I’m only offering once.”
“Text me your address, I’ll meet you there.”
//
She’s freaking out. She almost tells him not to come, but it’s too late. She can see his headlights through her front windows. She opens the front door before he even has a chance to knock, but he’s not complaining because his lips are back on hers. He pushes her up against the nearest wall, hard, and gets a hand wrapped gently around her throat. He hooks his thumb into her mouth, and she sucks on it, but she doesn’t give him the satisfaction of smiling while doing so. She nips at the pad of his thumb before he takes it out.
“Where’s your bedroom?”
“Upstairs.”
“Lead the way.”
She tugs him up the stairs, and into her room. She starts unbuttoning her blouse, but Harry’s got her on the bed before she can get it off. He kisses on her chest, biting and sucking on the top of her breasts. She weaves her fingers through his curls, pushing him closer to her. He kisses down her sternum and tugs her skirt off of her. He cups her over her stockings, grounding his palm against her. She arches her back slightly and moans. He grips the band of her stockings, curls the material around his fist, and stretches it tight over her pussy. She gasps as he wedges his thigh between hers while keeping the material tight over her. It all provides the perfect amount of friction.
“Go on, work for it.” He says to her.
“Huh?”
“You like working hard for things, right? Show me how you work for your orgasm.” He moves his thigh from side to side against her, and she groans.
She moves along with him, feeling herself get warm all over. He licks into her mouth, and stretches the stockings tighter. She’s breathing heavily against his mouth. She didn’t something like this would be getting her there, but the whole thing is just so hot, and he’s really turning her on. Her back arches as she grinds against him, her head moving from side to side on her pillows, and she comes just as her stockings tear at the crotch.
“Oops.” He says as he looks down.
“Happens more often than you think.” She breathes. “They’re not expens-“
Harry’s tearing them further at the crotch, and moving her panties to the side so he can lick over her. He presses down on her stomach to keep her in place. His mouth is warm, and he’s moaning into her. She’s squirming against him. It’s been a really long time since someone’s made her feel this good. And being fucked by her colleague that she can’t stand is giving her a type of euphoria she’s never experienced before.
Her toes curl when he sucks on her clit. He pushes her thighs further apart, and licks inside of her. He sucks, and licks, and spit, and makes a sloppy mess of her. She’s in complete shock, but she’s not complaining. She’s too busy tugging on Harry’s curls and grinding against his mouth. He told her to work for it, so she’ll continue to do just that.
“Oh, shit. Oh, shit!” She comes unexpectedly, and it knocks the wind out of her.
He wipes his mouth with the back of his hand. They start grabbing at each other and rolling around on the bed to get their clothes off. They can’t get naked fast enough. He pins her down again once they’re unclothed, keeping her wrists above her head on the bed. He slips a finger inside of her and her mouth falls open. He sucks on her bottom lip as a second finger joins the first.
“You’re just as sweet as a peach, you know that?” He says hotly into her ear, making her eyes roll back. His thumb starts rubbing around her clit as his fingers work deep inside of her. “Knew you would.”
“You’ve thought about going down on me before?”
“I’ve thought about doing everything to you.” He moves to look at her, wanting to watch her face as he loosens her up. “I don’t have any condoms with me.”
“I have some in my d-drawer.”
“Good. Get one.” He pulls his fingers from her and stands up. She reaches into her side-table drawer for a condom and hands it to him.
“It’s so big.” She says to him as he rolls the condom on.
“Don’t worry, we’ll make it fit.” He knees back onto the bed and knocks her legs back open. He lines himself up with her and pushes inside. “Jesus.” He clutches at the pillow by her head. “Sucked me right in, but you’re still so tight.” He pulls out and pushes right back in. “You good?”
“Yeah, please, just…fuck me.”
He gets a steady rhythm going for them. He wants to get a feel for her body before doing anything fancy. Besides that, he’s really liking the feeling of being chest to chest with her. He sits up slightly to grope at her breasts. He sucks one of her nipples into his mouth and groans. He wants to touch and kiss her all over. He sits up all the way and puts of her legs over his shoulder, moving her slightly so she’s on her side.
“Oh my god!” Her mouth falls open. “S-so deep. Oh my fucking god.” She starts panting, feeling like she can’t even breathe. This position is incredible.
They shift until she’s on her belly, and he’s fully on top of her fucking her from behind. He snakes an arm between her and the mattress. They’re grinding together in perfect sync, moving their hips in slow circles. Her breathing evens out, and he gives her hip a squeeze. He drags his fingers to her ass and rubs her between her cheeks.
“Is this okay?” He asks her. “Can I play with it a little?”
“Yes.” She nods.
He rubs her clit at the same time with his other hand, and she tightens up the second his finger starts to circle around her other hole.
“Need you to relax for me, Peach.” He nibbles on her ear as she tries to calm herself. “That’s good, just breathe.”
She moans out as she starts to feel completely overstimulated. Her clit is throbbing, her pussy is pulsating around his cock, and his other hole is taking his finger in with ease. It’s all too much, and it’s all so good.
“I’m gonna come again.” She shoves her face into her duvet as cries out into it. Harry doesn’t let up one bit, elongating all of the sensations. She can’t stop moaning and crying. He pulls out of her and lays on his back. She immediately shifts to straddle him, sinking down until she’s completely full of him. Her nails rake down his chest. “It’s really annoying that you feel this good.”
“Still think I’m a virgin?” He smirks, gripping her hips to move her along with his thrusts.
“N-no.” She grabs at her own breasts and lets her head roll back. “You can get a lot of experience by just fucking one person.”
“You’re a brat.” He swats at her ass as he chuckles. “Normally I don’t like, but right now it’s really doing something for me.” He sits up and smiles at her. “Keep your wrists behind your back and fuck yourself on me.” She nods and uses her knees to help herself move up and down on him. She switches between that and grinding down on him in circles. His hands come up to grope at her breasts, loving the way they feel in his hands. She tightens around him and starts moving faster. “Fuck, that’s it. Fuck me, god, just fuck me.”
“Oohhh my god.” There’s sweat rolling down her spine, and she can’t help but wrap her arms around him as she comes around him again, kissing him with everything she’s got.
He moves them so he’s back on top of her, hooking an arm under her knee, and fucking into her deeper than he has all night. His free hand wraps around her throat, gently squeezing and applying the perfect amount of pressure.
“Okay?” He asks her, letting up to make sure she can answer.
“Yes.”
Her hand comes down between them to take care of her clit, making him nearly lose it right then and there. He loves it when a woman just takes what she wants to get what she needs.
“I want you to keep your eyes open and on me.” He tells her. “Can you do that?”
“Yes.” She says to the best of her ability.
“Fuck, you’re so beautiful. I wish you could see how you look right now.”
“Harry.”
“Aww, are you gonna come again?” He pouts mockingly at her, and she nods. He nods along with her, still pouting. “You’re gonna come with me, so hold on.”
“Please, I…it feels so good. You feel so good.” Her free hand comes up to his shoulder, sinking her nails into his skin.
“It must piss you off that I’m making you feel this good.”
“You have no idea.” She says through gritted teeth.
Harry grins, and comes down to kiss her. He moans into her mouth as he starts to let go. His orgasm is right at the base of spine, and he’s ready to spill. She moans louder from hearing moan loudly. The room fills with the sounds of their sex, and they both fully submit to each other. He continues with slow thrusts as he drops her legs. His hands cup her jaw as they kiss each other without any precision, they both just need to do something with their mouths. Her hands squeeze at his hips and ass. His skin feels so good on hers.
After a few tender moments, Harry gets up and makes his way into her bathroom to clean himself up. Her head is reeling. What the fuck did she just do?! Did she seriously just sleep with her coworker whose guts she hates?
He comes out of the bathroom, letting the light from that guide him to find his clothes. He glances at her a few times, his chest is flushed and his forehead is damp. She sits up slightly, covering herself with her sheets. She’s overthinking everything. All of this is insane.
And there he was, looking at her with the smuggest look she’s ever seen.

The need to reduce the advertising of harmful products had already been acknowledged officially, if briefly, by some within the UK government.  The Behavioural Insights Team became known as the ‘nudge’ unit in honour of the popular economic notion that much could be done to achieve change with small actions that the public would barely notice, and then within a government department.  It published a report - Net Zero: principles for successful behaviour change initiatives - that concluded, “We do not have time to nudge our way to net zero…”.  Extraordinarily, the nudge unit was questioning its very purpose and existence, saying nudging was not enough to win a safe climate.  It went on to say: “Looking at past government-led initiatives, significant societal behaviour changes related to, for instance, reductions in harm from smoking, increasing worker or motor vehicle safety or uptake of vaccinations have all involved taxes, bans, mandates and other regulatory measures beyond soft persuasion.” The report was published as part of a bundle of policy documents surrounding the launch of the government’s landmark Net Zero Strategy, the grand plan setting out how it expected to achieve the new, more challenging climate change targets which it had just signed into law.  But it seemed that some members of the conservative government were reading the ‘behaviour change’ part of the plan for the first time, and were horrified.  Within hours the report was ‘unpublished’ and an official statement was issued disavowing its contents. The nudge unit itself was removed from Whitehall and put at a more safe distance from decision makers under the aegis of a research body. Its message, however, has since grown clearer and stronger.  In 2023 in a new report on ‘How to Build a Net Zero Society’ from the relocated Behavioural Insights Team recommended the regulation of advertising and greenwash. This new report said the UK should, “in addition to cracking down on all forms of greenwashing, follow other countries’ lead by restricting advertising of high-emitting sectors: explore the benefits of banning fossil fuels ads and, in time, advertising from firms within key sectors (e.g. air travel) who fail to meet decarbonisation targets compatible with UK carbon budgets.” They are not the only ones. By then, in response to the kind of call being made by the Badvertising campaign, the UK House of Lords Environment Committee had already concluded, in a 2022 report into behaviour change, that the “Government should introduce measures to regulate advertising of high-carbon and environmentally damaging products.”

Aeon lawyer AU sneak peek in these trying times???
Tumblr media
‘Rocinante’s Co-founder and Director of Research, Dr. Luis Serra Navarro.’
The celebrity.
She’d heard of him. In Ada’s experience, scientists tended to avoid the spotlight like it was radioactive. For every Stephen Hawking, there were at least a dozen men and women who’d happily never climb out from under their microscopes.
Last summer, Luis Serra Navarro had appeared on the cover of Time Magazine posing salaciously with his shirt half-undone.
Ada had email alerts set up to notify her of news items mentioning major corporations and high profile executives. She’d had to mute the notifications for Luis’ name. His antics had only filled her inbox with links to tabloids and trashy gossip magazines.
‘The man’s a liability,’ she said.
‘Perhaps. But after the acquisition he’ll be Tricell’s problem, not ours,’ Wesker replied, gritting his teeth as if deep down he was questioning whether the deal would be worth the inevitable headache, ‘He’s the driving force behind Rocinante and one of the best scientific minds of his generation.’
‘When he’s not sleeping his way through the Forty Under Forty list.’
‘Tricell wants him.’
‘And the Firm wants Tricell’s business. Fine. I’ll keep him in line.’
Wesker braced his forearms on the desk, his hands clasped together, ‘A fine assertion, but a week late. Luis was brought in for questioning by the NYPD two days ago.’
Ada sipped her cocktail, ‘What’d he do this time? Another bout of public indecency?’
‘He’s under investigation by the DA’s office.’
Her eyes bulged as she fought to swallow her drink and not spray it over Wesker’s desk.
'You sure know how to bury the lead,' she coughed.
Wesker clicked his mouse and the screen switched to a collage prominently featuring a mug shot. In it, Luis was smouldering in front of an NYPD camera, his dark hair slicked back, his jaw swathed in designer stubble. He was wearing a silk shirt as if he’d been arrested while out clubbing.
But beneath that was the money shot. It was a group photograph featuring eight men and women in white lab coats. And in the middle, with a smile like a million dollars, was Luis. The group was standing in what looked like a surgical suite holding a banner reading: ‘Europe. Laboratory Six. Dream Team’.
Ada’s cheeks went cold. On the bottom corner of the banner was the logo for the Umbrella Corporation. Luis had worked for Umbrella Corp, the most notorious and reviled corporation on the planet.
Their fall from grace had made the Enron scandal look like spilled milk. Half their executive board, the ones who hadn’t fled, were facing extensive jail time on top of unlimited fines. The cream of Umbrella’s top scientists were either dead or already languishing in jail. But others had fled before the Raccoon City disaster, wiping their records and disappearing before the shit really hit the fan.
Conniving, but smart. Sounded like Luis alright.
‘A former Umbrella lackey supplied that photograph in exchange for a commuted prison sentence,’ Wesker explained, eyes narrowed as if he was picturing wringing the guy’s neck, ‘Luis was set to be handed over to the FBI, but he made a deal.’
‘With or without his legal counsel’s input?’ she asked sassily.
Wesker’s icy silence answered her question, ‘Luis has information relating to the incident in Harvardville last year. He’s offered that information in exchange for a pardon.’
‘What information?’
‘That’s classified.’
‘Does that mean you don’t know either?’
Wesker’s expression hardened, ‘That’s not our concern. It’s a matter for the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office.’
‘Why them? Harvardville was in St Lawrence. Why not the State’s Attorney?’
‘She’s been notified. But Luis has requested the involvement of a specific Brooklyn attorney. Someone with a vested interest in all things Umbrella. His name’s in the file.’
Ada sat back in disbelief, ‘Luis could be facing charges of anything from criminal negligence to murder, and he’s making deals with the Feds and calling the shots? I need to meet him. He sounds like a riot.’
‘Tricell is demanding a Key Man Clause in the contract. They won’t proceed with the acquisition unless Luis’ continued employment at Rocinante is guaranteed.’
‘And he can’t run a company from a prison cell. Got it.’
Wesker stood, bracing his palms on the desk between them, ‘This deal is pivotal. I need an associate who can put sentimentality aside and make decisions in the best interest of the deal. Leave the investigation and hand-wringing to the moral crusaders. Luis already has a defence attorney. I just need you to protect the Firm.’
There was no use nodding. It wasn’t a question. It was a demand. She was fine-tuned to know the difference.
Ada also knew she was head and shoulders above the rest of the M and A department; she simply needed the other partners to glance in her direction and notice the fact. If she had to throw herself in front of a crusading Assistant District Attorney* to get Marshall, Church and Price to give her the promotion she was owed, then so be it.

Although the six-engine Valkyrie could only dash to Mach 3 due to aero heating and not cruising at that speed).
Their public relations firm was advertising every place they could about how their airplane could fly higher and faster than anyone could before.
On the other side of Edwards Air Force Base (AFB), the YF-12 Blackbird kept its secrets near and dear. The YF-12 was variant of the A-12 with a backseat for the missile launch controller
The YF-12s took the seventh through ninth slots on the A-12 assembly line; these were designated as YF-12A high-altitude, Mach 3 interceptor.
The main changes involved modifying the A-12’s nose by cutting back the chines to accommodate the huge Hughes AN/ASG-18 fire-control radar initially developed for the XF-108 with two infrared search and track sensors embedded in the chine leading edge, and the addition of the second cockpit for a crew member to operate the fire control radar for the air-to-air missile system. This airframe could easily fly Mach 3.
As told by Donn A. Byrnes and Kenneth D. Hurley in their book Blackbird Rising: Birth of an Aviation Legend, they were both being tested at Edwards AFB at the same time, so naturally, they hung out at the same bar after work. One of the local watering holes was called Hernandez Hideaway.
YF-12 test pilots, often flew at Mach 3 more often than the XB-70 would do in a lifetime.
Jim Eastham had just about enough of the bragging he heard daily about the XB-70. Eastham was a Lockheed test pilot who had already flown the A-12 and was now flying the YF-12.
One evening at the bar Al White of the XB-70 program was raving about his high Mach numbers when Eastham couldn’t stand it any longer. He turned to White and said, “Al, we do more Mach 3 time in a single YF-12 mission than you guys have flown in your entire program” 😆
Al looked at Jim, and without missing a beat, he said, “yes that’s true, Jim, but we lose pieces that are bigger than what you fly!!😳
