Why I’m A Hypocrite And My Challenge With Mental Energy
I’m a hypocrite. There, I said it.
Leadership, both personal and professional, is an energy game. But it takes more than physical energy for peak performance. Leaders need abundant physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual energy to manage their stress and perform their best. And just like professional athletes, leaders need to train properly, regularly and on purpose to achieve the results they’re after. I help leaders do just that in Lunch & Learns, half-day workshops and even 8-week online courses.
Tumblr media
So here I was—teaching leaders how to balance their energy—yet grinding my teeth at night. Waking up in the middle of the night with my heart racing, thinking about work and then getting up at 3am to answer emails. Snapping at my team for no reason, putting undue pressure on them.
I’m Good at Talking the Talk, But I Haven’t Been Walking the Walk
I was not walking the walk and practicing my own teachings. It was time to step back and assess what was going on. I was totally out of whack! So I did an energy assessment of myself, just like I would for a client.
My Physical, Emotional, Mental and Spiritual Energy Level Assessment
• Physical: I eat well and exercise regularly. My recent check-up showed that I had the physical energy of someone a decade younger.
• Emotional: My EQ is fairly high. When I’m not stressed, I can manage difficult situations and people with empathy and patience.
• Spiritual: I know my values and refer to them regularly.
• Mental: I have the attention span of a flea; I can’t focus on anything for more than a few minutes, and my brain is on constant overdrive. No surprise that this is my weakest area. In fact, my husband calls me a shark, because I literally can’t sit down for more than an hour without jumping up to do something.
I Have the Attention Span of a Flea
Hmmm.. this is going to be a challenge. Ask me to run a marathon and I’ll train daily for it. Tell me to go gluten-free and I’m on a baking frenzy. Offer me the chance to work with emotional teams and I can’t wait. Tell me something ‘can’t be done’ and I will find a solution or at least a work-around. Yet, invite me to sit and read a book? I read the first chapter and then the last chapter (no joke) to save time. Buy me a cuppa? I’ll start getting antsy after 30 minutes. So working on my mental energy to improve my focus is going to be hard.
Very hard.
My Shark-Like Behavior Was Impacting My Family and Team
Tumblr media
Yet I had to do it. Not only was my shark-like behavior impacting my sleep, it was also impacting my team and family. In addition, I felt like a total hypocrite. It’s like Ellen Page saying she had to come out while filming Freeheld; I can’t teach energy management and not practice it myself.
So where to begin on this journey?
I Started With My Limiting Beliefs
First, I had to look at my limiting beliefs, or the things I thought were true that held me back from changing my behaviors. In general, our society is addicted to activity, and rewards constant busyness. We applaud the person who pulled the all-nighter; we recognize the person who stayed late to get the job done. Yet there is no such fanfare for the person who leaves at 5pm; in fact, those people are ridiculed in certain organizational cultures as weak or not team players. In addition, it’s frowned upon to take all your vacation time or take any downtime at all.
This perception is problematic for many reasons but one of those reasons is factual. The University of California put out some interesting research on the upsides of downtime. The research says:
“You can’t think without space. If you’re always doing something, there’s no way to get anything new into your mind; there’s no way to reach new conclusions.”
Why? Because unstructured time stimulates the ‘default mode network’ part of the brain, where creativity and problem solving happen. When we perform any task at all, no matter how small, our brain switches to the ‘executive network control’, which is related to deductive reasoning. So it’s when we sit back and let our minds wander, that the creative ‘default mode’ kicks in.
Even Though I Fully Knew the Benefits of Downtime, I Was at Super-Shark Speed
My limiting belief was that ‘downtime is for wimps’. The research proved me wrong. My mind was buying into the idea but my body was resisting. Even though I fully knew the benefits of downtime, I was at super-shark speed, racing around the house to get things done.
What would I tell a client in my position? I’d tell them they needed to practice downtime.
I’m a kinesthetic learner, which means I need to touch something to learn it well. So I had to find a role model to physically, literally show me what down time looks like. I had no idea how to ‘do’ downtime.
Tumblr media
Thankfully, I didn’t have to look too far: my husband. He cherishes his downtime; I don’t mean just an hour here or there. He is fully committed to detox Sundays, where he just kicks back and reads the newspaper…the old fashioned thing made from trees. He totally unplugs and sometimes won’t even get in a car.
I Started My Practice Small, Slowly Building Mental Muscle
So I started small. I sat down for 15 minutes to read a magazine. Then I got up to plan my work for the week. Then I sat down for 20 minutes to close my eyes on the couch. Then I jumped up, feeling guilty that I hadn’t wrapped the holiday gifts. Then I allowed myself to watch a TV show, once all the ‘work had been done’. Little by little, week after week, I taught myself to chill. Stare out a window. Pet our cats. Listen to music. Snuggle in bed with our daughter. Sit on a plane without compulsively checking email. It was torture. I wanted to jump out of my skin. I wanted to do something, anything, please give me a task! Yet, I knew that I was slowly building a muscle, just like going to the gym.
I Taught Myself to Chill
And the impact was clear, both at home and work. At home, I was more patient and easier to be around. I stopped grinding my teeth and actually slept through the whole night. At work, I started enjoying writing again. It was no longer a chore. The ideas flowed out of me and actually became my most popular leadership posts, such as this one on surfing and this one on EQ. And my best product ideas and client ideas came from daydreaming out the window.
The best part? I no longer feel like a hypocrite. I’m a leader who inspires other leaders to manage their energy, all of it, for peak performance.
Do you think you need more practice managing your physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual energy? I’d love to hear what challenges you have and how you face those challenges.

4 TedX Talks by Survivors of Human Trafficking
Tumblr media
Bridges Out of the Past: A Survivor’s Lessons on Resilience | Ria Story
In this captivating TEDx talk on resilience, Ria walks you through her own horrific story of more than seven years of sexual abuse by her father. She then shares the lessons on resilience she learned as she learned to not just survive, but thrive in spite of her past. Overcome challenges, obstacles, and adversity in your own life by building a bridge out of the past and into the future. Like many, Ria faced adversity in life. Raised on an isolated farm in Alabama, she was sexually abused by her father from age 12 – 19. Desperate to escape, she left home at 19 without a job, a car, or even a high school diploma.
Ria learned to be resilient, not only surviving but thriving. She worked her way through college, earning her MBA with a cumulative 4.0 GPA, and had a successful career in the corporate world of administrative healthcare.
Today, Ria is a motivational leadership speaker and author of 9 books. Ria and her husband, Mack Story, co-founded Top Story Leadership which offers motivational speaking, leadership training, coaching, and consulting.
I was human trafficked for 10 years. We can do more to stop it | Barbara Amaya
Barbara Amaya ran away at the age of 12 after being abused by family members. She was taken in on the streets of Washington, DC by a couple who seemed nice, but ended up selling her into human trafficking. She was used for months and then sold to a man named Moses who took her to New York and continued to traffic her for many years. Now Barbara fights for other victims of human trafficking and to change policies that treat victims as criminals.
Barbara is an anti-trafficking advocate, speaker, trainer, author and survivor leader in the movement to end modern-day slavery and human trafficking. She is Senior Technical Adviser, Policy, Programs and After Care Services at SeraphimGlobal, and has been actively raising awareness of the sexual exploitation of children and domestic sex trafficking since 2012.
I was sex trafficked for years. Brothels are hidden in plain sight | Casandra Diamond
Sex trafficking may be happening behind the walls of businesses you pass daily – including the some of the massage parlours and holistic centres in your community. Casandra Diamond shares a harrowing story of her experience inside these modern day brothels: in this raw and honest talk, learn about the systemic issues that enable businesses to operate in plain sight and how you can help to advocate for change.
Casandra is the founding director of BridgeNorth, a survivor-led charitable organization that provides programs to assist victims of sexual exploitation and human trafficking. Her work includes investing in public education, awareness, and advocacy at all levels of government including supporting Bill C-36 which is now law as the Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act.
Domestic Sex Trafficking – A Survivor’s Perspective | Karly Church
As she defines what domestic sex trafficking is, Karly talks about the stages of exploitation while drawing upon her personal experiences. Karly helps educators understand how they can help elicit change. Karly Church is a Crisis Intervention Counselor, Social Service Worker, and advocate for survivors of domestic sex trafficking. She has worked the front line with youth in sex work and trafficking for over four years.
Church works at Victim Services of Durham Region, where she provides specialized services and support to survivors of human trafficking. Church is a Canadore College graduate from two separate programs: Mental Health and Addictions, and Social Service. As a survivor of domestic human trafficking, she harnesses her lived experience, extensive knowledge, and her passion to work with her fellow survivors. She meets individuals at their need while providing support with a trauma informed perspective.
Church has delivered keynote speeches throughout Canada and has trained and presented to thousands of social service providers. She is dedicated to providing preventative education through youth symposiums, presentations, consultations, interviews and panels on human trafficking.

Game 1 Recap: Mystics Opener Tues, May 14th 7pm EST NY Liberty @ Washington
In case you missed it… 1st Quarter It's opening day and ESA is packed with thousands of red shirts. The Mystics start with defensive FIRE with 3 blocks and 3 steals in the first quarter. The offense is looking slow, but that's not too surprising as the season starts. In any case, DC has not been known for their pace in recent years. The team seem comfortable with good energy which is great to see since they are now without energy factory Natasha Cloud. International vet but WNBA newcomer Julie Vanloo is playing a fair few minutes. Meanwhile, JJ is lighting it up for NY.
2nd Quarter Rookie Aaliyah Edwards and Vanloo both getting minutes here and both have a steal—the 5th for Washington after just 12 minutes of play. Mystics are down 24-31 following a few empty possessions and high efficiency shooting from the Liberty. Edwards drillled her first two wnba free throws. We're seeing Slim eager to be a visionary from the point position and Stef Dolson having immediate major impact. Coach Eric calls a timeout to regroup after a 3-foul defensive effort down 30-40 with 3:37 to go in the half. Some Dolson and some defense and the Mystics are closing the gap. Meghan McPeak and Christy Winters Scott continue their legendary, best-in-sports commentary. No one gets away with a travel on Christy's watch. Shakira Austin ends the half with a ridiculous three after racking up 4 blocks to make it 43-40 Mystics!
3rd Quarter Ariel comes out ready to juice up the points but so is Betnijah for NY. Highlight: Shakira taking on Stewie one-on-one from the top of the key and eating it up Highlight: sick reverse from Edwards With a 7 point lead, DC is playing free with their offense, supported by a couple empty Liberty plays. A lot of minutes given to newcomer Fiebich for NY. Earl stays hot to keep the lead going into the fourth quarter OH WAIT Vanloo hits a buzzer beater from a couple steps past the center line for her first WNBA points, winning a roar from the crowd and a "Welcome to DC!" from our commentary heroes: 67-59 Mystics.
4th Quarter It's good to see Kennedy Burke out here balling even in the wrong colors. Oops JJ is left alone on the perimeter and sinks it. The Liberty step up defense with Slim and Shakira sitting and bring it back to within 1 forcing a timeout. Some sticky business with a raft of travels, offensive and defensive fouls, slows down the scoring. Betnijah is displaying the leadership and energy we've grown to respect in recent years. With 3 minutes left, Mystics miscue out of a timeout and NY goes up 7. Oh no Stef hit her head on the court. Slim is going to the rim this year. Any missed layups from last year are forgotten. It's 3 in a row layed in. She finally misses the 4th—a reverse. 1 pt game. An unfortunate shot clock violation after a stagnant possession for Washington gives the ball back to NY. A turnover and court advancement offer the Mystics a good chance to regain the lead, but they squander 3 shots leaving NY ahead by one with possession and 16.4 seconds to play. A foul after the inbound and 2 shots — it's 80-83 NY. Sykes, Samuelson, Dolson, Atkins and Vanloo are in for the must-get 3. NY responds with excellent D to force a poor shot. Game over 80-85 Liberty with the comeback win in DC.
Overall a great opening game, tough loss after the energy and excitement of the 3rd quarter, though.
My Player of the Match: Shakira Austin. Offensive intensity + 5 blocks.
Shout out to Karlie Samuelson, she is finally getting the responsibility she has deserved. Hope Stef is good after the hard fall. Welcome Edwards and Vanloo—each had plays to be hyped about. Earl and Slim are clearly gunning for the Finals already. Let's go!

Online Learning Increases Employee Engagement: What is Online Learning?
In my last post, I discussed why it’s important to incorporate multiple learning styles in a training program. Technology offers to best opportunities to do that. In this post, let’s look at what online learning actually is.
The U.S. Distance Learning Association (USDLA) seems to concur that there is no official, agreed-upon definition of online learning. There is however one commonality among various camps: the integration of instructional media. The USDLA calls out the use of technology infrastructures to make more “effective learning opportunities more accessible to all learners, whatever their age, location, or reason for learning.”
They go on to say, “It includes e-learning, texting, social networking, virtual worlds, game-based learning, and webinars. It’s the Internet. It’s Google. It’s broadband and satellite and cable and wireless. Corporate universities. Virtual universities. Blended learning, mobile learning. It’s using our phones and computers and whatever technology comes next, in new ways.” In other words, online learning is using technology to help students of all ages learn new concepts. We see it all the time with children’s apps to learn spelling, math, music and more.
We’re starting to see online learning more with adult learning as well through Learning Management Systems (LMS), which are often programs that incorporate videos, podcasts and academic information for adult learners. These can be synchronous (the course participants and lecturer all have to be online at the same time) or asynchronous (the course participants can access the information online, at any time).
Learning is Collaborative
Despite the appeal of customization, learning is collaborative and continues to rely on community. Most people think that collaborative learning means face-to-face training. However, online learning allows students to engage in meaningful ways through video, chat, journals or other multimedia options.
A New York Times piece concluded that the “real promise of online education” is the nature by which it can be tailored to suit individual needs.
It’s not just the addition of multimedia, such as video and chat that engages students better; the way multi-media are used in course design may have a strong impact as well. For example, the study shows that interactive video vs. non-interactive video may impact learning more significantly. Interactive video allows students to control the way they absorb information, such as fast-forwarding through a video or watching it multiple times. Are the students able to watch video in any order they wish, or is course content set to prevent any form of deviation? These types of tweaks make training programs more or less effective.
One big advantage of online learning is increased collaboration, which every organization could use. In traditional college classrooms, most students try to engage with each other and form study communities, to help each other learn the material. Online learning makes collaboration easier. For those who normally would not be able to collaborate in person, technology brings a wealth of knowledge to the student’s fingertips, giving access to the best experts and resources in every medium you can imagine.
Being online is already a part of our everyday life; it makes sense to integrate it into one of the most important pillars of our society: education.
